The best thing the movies did as an adaptation was expanding Effie’s role, making her more obviously sympathetic to Katniss and Peeta, and not letting an incredible performance by Elizabeth Banks go to waste.

Barty could hardly contain his excitement. He’d raced inside the house. He planted a huge smacking kiss on Effie’s face and spun her around the room. 

“I fucking love you,” He declared. 

“Oh, great, I’ve lost him again,” Evan snickered as he and the others entered, Remus finally having caught up with his death-wish boyfriend. Barty dropped Effie and grinned at Evan. 

“She gave me her van, I am eternally hers,” Barty said solemnly, taking Effie’s hand and kissing the back of it as he bowed low to her. 

“Oh, that's a brilliant idea, Mum,” James agreed, hearing what Barty had said as he came through the door, walking over and kissing her on the cheek before getting grabbed into a hug by Monty. 

“Wow, really?” Evan asked, shocked. 

“I’m not using it, and Barty needs one. That’s what family is for, darling,” Effie cooed, pinching Barty’s cheek affectionately. He blushed furiously. 

“Damn, strays,” Sirius joked as he wrapped an arm around Barty and Evan. “Welcome to the family. There is no escape,” He said as Barty and Evans shocked faces.

“Am I included in this?” Pandora asked from behind Regulus. 

“Of course,” Monty pipped up, “I always wanted a daughter,” He wrapped a gentle arm around Pandora and slipped her a fiver. She stared at it, confused. “That’s what parents do when their kids visit,” He whispered loudly to her. Understanding dawned on her face as she slipped the money into her bag. 

“Thank you,” She laughed her sweet tinkling laugh. 

“Anytime, sweetheart,” Monty let her go and excused himself to go check on the dinner.

Barty was in a good mood for the entire evening, and it showed. Effie had helped him put the van into his name, which meant he could drive it home and not have to worry about getting back into Sirius’s side car. 

He flirted with everyone at the table and did everything he could think of to make Effie smile, though it didn’t take much as she had an almost permanent smile on her face. But as the evening went on, they all began yawing, started by Pandora, who’d snuggled up to Regulus and had her head in his lap as she slept. Barty looked around and found it so hard to believe that on just a few short weeks he’d found all these people. James Potter had a lot to answer for. He felt a rush of love for the people gathered, even Sirius. He glanced at Evan and gently stroked a finger across the back of his hand. He leant in, his lips brushing against Evan’s ear.

“Wanna get out of here?” He asked in a sultry tone. Evan’s pupils darkened, and he nodded, kissing Barty chastely before standing. 

“Well, thank you for a wonderful evening, but I think it’s time we headed out,” Evan said, his eyes flickering to Barty repeatedly. 

“Gods, be less obvious,” Sirius cackled, throwing a cushion at the pair. Barty stuck his tongue out at his sort of friend and made a show of thanking Effie and Monty again for their kindness and promising to come again soon. 

Goodbyes done, Barty basically dragged Evan out to the van. He unlocked it and hopped inside. It smelt amazing. Effie had left a vanilla air freshener in it, and the light scent was calming. He ran his hands over the leather-wrapped steering wheel and started her up. 

She purred happily as she idled. Barty closed his eyes trying to contain his happiness before he carefully pulled the van out of the garage, beeping the horn as he drove out of the driveway and onto the road. She was perfect as so light to drive. His old van had fought him at every turn, but this one slid around them with no bother. He knew the grin on his face must look ridiculous, but he was so damn happy.

He pulled the van into his parking space at their flat and turned the engine off. He stroked his hands over the interior, mapping it in his mind. 

“Are you coming up, or do you want me to leave you two alone?” Evan smirked, his eyebrow arched. Barty laughed at the insinuation but double-checked he’d locked the van before following Evan up the stairs, only checking back over his shoulder once or twice.

The last two books in Effie Calvin's Tales From Inthya series (Empress of Xytae and Daughter of the Moon) really feel like the Satine and Bo-Katan story I WISH we'd gotten.

Empress of Xytae is the story of a princess who is heir to the throne of a country whose culture values physical strength and aggression and war above all else, but the princess doesn't value any of those things. She has to go on the run when her father dies and her younger sister starts a coup and she goes on a journey where she sees exactly how her country's values have brought its people to near ruin. She learns to be more confident in herself and decides to rally support to take back her throne so she can help bring her country into a time of peace. Along the way she is joined by another young princess who teaches her the value of spontaneity and her grandmother who helps her understand the responsibilities that go into being a ruler.

Daughter of the Moon is the story of the younger sister who is removed from power and sent off to another country to learn their values while her own country stabilizes from its years at war. She has retained all of her people's values about aggression and physical strength and barely understands a culture where those AREN'T valued the same way. For the first time, she isn't treated as special and given anything she wants simply for being strong and born the right way. She has to figure out how to actually connect with other people as equals and allow herself to be vulnerable with someone else.

What I like about Empress of Xytae is that it allows for the main character to be RIGHT about her country's failures, but to still have flaws that actually get acknowledged by the narrative as things she needs to work on in order to accomplish her goals. In this character's case, she's very shy and insecure and submissive. She initially had just planned to run away to try to find a safe place to live out her life, and it's not until she really understands how much the years of war have impacted her people that she starts to realize that she can't be that selfish and works to overcome her own instincts in order to be the leader her people need. I also appreciated how the romantic relationship she builds with the other princess became a necessary aspect of her growth as a character. It's not just superfluous or done to send a message, the relationship is integral to the main character's growth into being a leader willing to stand up for her own beliefs and protect those she cares about.

What I like about Daughter of the Moon is that it allows the main character to be sympathetic without ignoring that she'd been one of the primary antagonists of the last book and that she is SEVERELY flawed as a person. She's aggressive and arrogant and self-absorbed and intentionally unkind. She caused a lot of harm to a lot of people, but she's also the way she is because other people encouraged her to be this way. She made her own choices, of course, and the book never shies away from that and the need for her to learn how to make DIFFERENT ones, but she was also taught that there were things about herself she couldn't (and/or shouldn't) control, regardless of its impact on other people. She continues to make bad choices throughout her book even as she also shows that there are sides of her we never saw in the first book when we only saw her from her sister's perspective. We hear more about what her life was like and how it hurt her, but she also continues to hurt other people and has to deal with those consequences now that it actually means something to her. This book allows her to be both sympathetic and wrong, likable while still learning how to be a good person, and I appreciate the way it balances those in order to give her a redemption arc. People are allowed to not forgive her, she's allowed to not forgive some of those who've hurt her, and it doesn't take away from either side of the relationship.

I'm sorry but I just do not subscribe to the opinion that the hunger games movies were in any way bad or that they "butchered" the characters or themes that suzanne so meticulously and lovingly created, because a) she was always a constant presence in the creation of those movies and the directors/producers were very respectful and mindful of the differences between her books and what they could actually implement in a visual medium that would make sense and propel the story forward in a way that made sense in their interviews, and b) even though the movies definitely don't show all of the thematic nuances of the books, and although they do gloss over/erase a lot of the ways that the games affect katniss and peeta (namely his disability/her loss of hearing), and while the movies are quite preoccupied with the visual aesthetic and streamlining the story for a wider audience, they do still contain the heart and soul of the books and, to me, the creators seemed fiercely protective of suzanne's core vision. also fuck you they're just amazingly well-shot, well-written, and well-acted films, including the mockingjay movies, and i will die on this hill

Courier Six, also known as Effie Yew, was my "fuck it, I just want to get through this character creation process" after Fallout New Vegas crashed immediately upon creating my first character (Crystal Methany). I ended up growing entirely attached to Effie and tried to keep her safe and fashionable during the whole playthrough! Her primary companions were Rex with Lupa the Legion mongrel mothers brain and her boyfriend Raul, the grumpy Ghoul mechanic.
