hi everyone, this is a hwevent16 starter call! a list of my characters will be under the cut, and i will be doing four starters per character. numbers will be randomly picked to choose what monsters our muses will be dealing with!

Tortuga had been a new place, but all new places could be learned: a small island and a smaller port, half-built and half-rotted, alive in the same way that bloody-faced vultures and mushrooms were.

Truthfully, she never expected to see James Norrington again, and in some ways Elizabeth is not sure she has: there is a man in a hammock who answers to that name, who has a captain’s coat, and the same sharp-tongued disdain for what irritates him – but (and here, when she has thought on it, she has struggled) either there is some familiar thing missing, or some unfamiliar thing at home.

There was comfort, if only in the physical attributes of the King’s House in Port Royal: her feather-soft mattress, food not gone rotted in the cask, windows wide to every wandering breeze – things which Elizabeth had always understood, vaguely and without much in comparison, to be luxuries.

It was easier to know those you didn’t than those you did, Henry Hopkins had thought at some distant, drunken point in the past – a practice as straightforward as prayer, to copy a man’s words exactly to send to his family, or to recall who and which had requested some concession or another.

Patterns:

A prompt specifically for five sentences brings out the worst in me, length-of-sentence-wise.

I love dialogue as a starter, particularly "Indirect Observation," Specific Description of Speaker/Speaker's Actions, "Indirect Observation, Continued And/Or Refined."

I think I try to establish who the POV character is pretty quickly - maybe too quickly?

what is it with me writing fics where someone's chopping firewood, or fussing with firewood. i'm not that cold all the time.

���️ ───── his relationship or .... perhaps lack of? the proposal set forwards by her father as a proper match for his daughter had been more to him then just that. he liked elizabeth, admired her, thought her to be quite a good choice for a wife, even now as they stood in this change of worlds. she was strong, beautiful, driven. all traits of a respectable partner and yet her heart seemed to belong to another and he was not that person. he'd never even been a thought had he? she'd found some sort of calling he could never fully expect but it was ... good look for her. "elizabeth." he spoke her name nearly choked on it if he was honest as he stepped forwards some. they were always on a different path it seemed but one thing he knew he never wanted to see her harmed that would be something he could not forgive. "perhaps this is time where you finally step away. avoid any harm." he stressed quickly.

@ashortdropandasuddenstop gets a plotted starter!

The select group of EITC soldiers had arrived incognito to Tortuga at the request of Lord Cutler Beckett to find the former Commodore, James Norrington. Amongst them was Murtogg ( and Mullroy ). They had been told that Norrington could possibly be there, but Murtogg didn't believe it. Why would his close friend ( or dare he say lover ) be there? Neither did Mullroy, why would he be hiding there? It made no sense. So here they were in the tavern, scouting for a familiar face. They didn't spot him, of course. Not … yet.

Rounding the corner, Murtogg had his cutlass near his side ... and one of the two pairs of shackles just incase he did find the former commodore here. He didn't really think he'd find the man here. It wasn't like him to be hiding here of all places. The group was split up and the tavern was lively. He was attempting to blend in, whenever the question of the irons came about he said it was for personal use and nobody questioned it.

He weaved his way through the crowd before a fight ad broken out between a bunch of drunken rogues and pirates. That's when Richard was forced to defend himself. There was two other soldiers there with him, but they were busy with their own fights. Murtogg had dodged a few fists and slammed one drunkards head against the wall and knocking him out. He quickly looked around, before a body smacked into his. "Wotch it, mate!" he yelled, pushing the man off him which caused a fist to come into contact with his chin. He swung back and hit the other man. The soldier stumbled backwards in attempt to distance himself from taking any more damage.

It was then when he caught site of the man now trying to fight him. James? It can't be. Murtogg stumbled backward, hearing the man's voice. It was him. "James?" he called out in confusion, hands fumbling backwards. Hazel hues darting the man over, he looed like hell and smelt awful. Yet something about it was .. interesting to him. "Oi! It's me! Richard!" he called in defense, hoping that Norrington wasn't going to be trying to murder him.

There is nothing but evident displeasure on his face as he makes his way towards the gangway. His brow is furrowed, his shoulders straight and his mouth is drawn into a tight line. Any who dare to look at the commodore’s eyes is met with a glare, thus dissuading any possible conversation.

Short words of farewell are exchanged for wishes for a good voyage with his men, who have no choice but to wait on the docks. Only Norrington is allowed on the ship, a fact he hates. This mission would be so much easier if he had at least his lieutenants with him. But, as per the admiralty’s orders, he is to go alone so as not to increase the tensions with the privateers they have hired.

A sigh in preparation, then a glance to the skies in silent prayer, and James boards the vessel.

“I would speak to the captain of this ship.” He calls out as he stands on deck, both to draw the attention of the one he’ll be in charge of supervising for this voyage and to announce his arrival.

If she had had a choice, they would not have made port. After an attack on one of the ships in His Majesty’s service she likes to keep moving. She would argue self-defense, don’t start what you can’t finish, but she rather doubt the Royal Navy saw it like that. They never took anything she did very well these days. Only they didn’t exactly know it was her. Captain Moran was, by most people reckoning, a blonde haired chizzles jaw man of six-foot-one, not a woman. A woman who refused to give her up her femininity just because he ruled over a crew load of pirates. 

They were, however, in desperate need of supplies and there was a hole in the ship that was taking on water quicker than they could scoop it back out again. Gustavia was pirate friendly but not a pirate port. She wasn’t sure if someone had ratted them out or they were just unlucky but soon after they arrived, and without enough warning to get away, the Navy had caught up with them.  

As the military man came onto her ship, Celia didn’t immediately come forward. From time to time, her first mate took on role of captain, if it wouldn’t land him in too much danger, to keep up the charade of the captain being a man. He stood tall in front of the men, Cee somewhere in the back, ready to play his part when Cee heard a voice she knew. It had been a long time, a very long time. The memory of sitting with him at dinner, not long after her daughter had died. Everyone else was sorry, of course, but he was gentle. Something she had admired in a man of his standing. As a call was made for the man who commands this ship was made, Celia pushed through her men to stand at the front, long blonde hair catching in the wind. 

“No man commands this ship, James Norrington.” She removed her hat, bowed ever so slightly and looked him directly in the eye. “I’m afraid reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”
