I'm stupid but I only just realized what triggered Sonic's memory of Tom's words to him, when he was about to kill Shadow.
It was Shadow pointing at his own chest, his own heart, demanding that Sonic go ahead and finish him off.
His heart.
Just like Tom had pointed at Sonic's heart, except in the entirely different context of "You didn't let your pain change who you are. In here."
And then he remembered. 💔
