Slightly related: in pretty recent dc canon, Slade and Talia do have a biological test tube baby together. his name is Respawn. I think neither Talia nor Slade knew about him though bc it was all Ra's al Ghul fuckery ?
Yeah Respawn, that poor little thing. You're correct, neither Talia nor Slade knew anything about him. - it's one of those thing where Ra's al Ghul goes "brilliant mastermind is 600+ year old and instead of doing anything which makes a lick of sense with his centuries of hindsight and experience of the world, he obsesses over people's genes".
Basically he spliced Talia's DNA with Slade's to replicate whatever gave him his meta-abilities, and since DC can't decide if Slade's abilities derive from his meta-gene, from the serum he was given or from both (hell, they barely can decide if Slade's hair is white because of the serum or because man's old), everything makes so little sense that somehow what Ra's al Ghul does ends up working, and he manages to create this test tube baby who indeed has both Talia and Slade's DNA, and the latter's meta-abilities.
But instead of doing anything meaningful with this kid, he keeps him locked up and tortures him (?), or uses him to get organs when Damian needs them (???), and doesn't even give him a name. Respawn picks out his own nickname, and he survives only because his healing factor keeps him alive despite all of the above, and somehow he also stays sane despite the years of isolation and hardcore physical abuse.
At some point he manages to run away and connect with Slade, and Slade *immediately* (and I mean after barely batting an eye) decides that this is his son and he will cherish him and protect him. And of course a couple of issues later Respawn gets brutally murdered right before Slade's eyes, because DC art directors are so competent and the only development they could think of was that of re-traumatizing Slade in the exact same way as it already happened with Grant (and with Joseph pre-reboot), making him lose a child brutally and by failing to protect him. Right before his eyes.
And so they also wasted a perfectly good character (Respawn I mean) which could have had an amazing plotline both with Slade and Rose & by himself, and a lot of potential for future development, just because they wanted the quick and easy drama of "child gets tortured for all his brief life for absolutely no reason, finally finds someone that wants to take care of him and dies a horrible death".
You can tell it didn't really work because not many people even know that Respawn exist, and those who know didn't get the time to truly grow fond of him since he's there for such a short time. And I bet you can also tell I'm pissed about it.
#I'm fine with the way Respawn came to be making no sense I am used to things making no sense when it comes to DC#but for chrissake give him a plotline which goes beyond 'he fucking dies'#I know he might be still alive and yada yada but until I see him on page doing something he's basically still dead#since his plotlines got butchered anyway#this is similar to what happened with Duke. They introduce a good character give him an acceptable storyline & then they do nothing with it#amazing direction flawless execution /s#anyways#my asks#respawn dc#slade wilson#respawn deserved better squad#and honestly Slade deserved better too#my meta

Storylines for the ensemble cast aren’t being equally distributed and a lot of them lack resolution
One of the most important promotion points for 9-1-1 has always been its ensemble cast but for the past 2 and a half seasons, some viewers have noticed the way storylines haven’t been equally distributed amongst all the main characters. The lack of equal distribution is causing some viewers to feel like the show has been off balance since season 3 or it seems like something is missing. There’s no depth or breadth in the storylines that are being established and while some of the mains are continuing to get storylines each season, they rarely last for more than one or two episodes. Others haven’t had individual storylines in more than 4 or 5 seasons unless it was inextricably linked to their significant other’s storylines, while only one of them has consistently been given storylines that last for multiple episodes or entire seasons even though he is also constantly involved in other main cast members’ storylines. There has also been an issue with the lack of resolution for some storylines because they were abruptly ended without any closure which means the audience had to do mental gymnastics to try and figure out what could have happened offscreen as opposed to those resolution scenes being shown onscreen. To illustrate the way storylines have been unequally distributed, summaries of the main characters’ storylines or lack thereof have been included below.
Disclaimer: This is a long post but it had to be long so that each main character’s storylines or lack thereof could be analyzed and evaluated.
Main Characters
Athena’s had several storylines over the years that were all her own including the unsolved murder of Tonya Kingston that was finally resolved and closed in 6x3 “The Devil You Know” but once she returned to L.A., she didn’t tell anyone, including her best friend Hen about how relieved she felt after it took them 45 years to find out who did it. Also the man who killed Tonya knew Athena and she told Bobby that Junior used to chase her through those orange groves so that should have been traumatic for her. She first told Hen about Tonya in 2x7 “Haunted” so it would have made narrative sense for them to have a conversation about it instead of them talking about lottery tickets in 6x8 “9-1-1 What’s Your Fantasy?”. After all the trauma her and Harry had to deal with regarding Jeffrey in 5A, it would have also made sense for Athena to still be in therapy about her attack and Harry’s kidnapping. Additionally it would have been great to show how Athena coped after she worked with the police in a different state to help them solve Tonya’s murder in 6x3, especially since she knew the murderer and since she has two children of her own and one of them is living in another state. Unlike May who is an adult and is in college, Harry is still young and even though he’s in Florida with his father, Michael, it’s clear Athena still worries about her son because she was upset in 5x14 “Dumb Luck” after that teenager got hit by a car because he was wearing sneakers that reminded her of Harry. To illustrate how she was feeling, she should have been shown dealing with all of that in therapy instead of it being brushed under the rug like everything else has been including her therapy after 3x17 “Powerless”. While it’s great that she’s a sergeant, it’s also noticeable that she’s usually the first and sometimes the only one from the LAPD to respond to a scene with the 118 like she did in 6x8; therefore some other recurring characters should be continuously included in those storylines that require police or detectives to be present during a call like Detective Ransone. Athena can’t be the only police officer who responds to the majority of the 118’s calls even though it appears their paths cross a lot since they’re probably assigned to the same geographic region of L.A. In real life, the same police sergeant wouldn’t show up at every scene with the firehouse that’s captained by her husband. There are so many things they could do with Athena’s storylines including have her train a rookie. Maddie did a ride along with her in 2x5 “Awful People” and they worked great together as a team to save the owner of a restaurant who had been stabbed; therefore it would be interesting to see her train a young police officer who is fresh out of the academy. If she were allowed to do that it would be a callback to 3x7 “Athena Begins” because she was a rookie and the audience had the chance to see all the things she had to deal with as a young African American woman who joined the police force when it was still being predominately employed by Caucasian males. If the rookie is a woman, then Athena could tell her about some of the discriminatory behaviors that still exist within the police force. Or maybe Athena could pursue another promotion again even though she turned down the one that was offered to her in 2x4 “Stuck”. It would be great to see her have another awesome storyline that doesn’t require her getting almost killed or having her family put in danger like they were in the past including when May tried to commit suicide in 1x3 “Next of Kin”, Michael became ill and it was diagnosed in 3x10 “Christmas Spirit”, Bobby getting shot in 4x14 “Survivors” or when Harry was kidnapped by Jeffrey in 5x2 “Desperate Times”. She’s an awesome police sergeant and she definitely has the skills to teach rookies how to be good at their jobs. Her and Bobby have discussed retirement a few times after Athena was attacked in 3x17 and the reality for both of them is they are maturing and will likely have to consider retirement sometime in the next few years. Therefore a “beginning to prepare for retirement” storyline is plausible so that she could begin to explore available options that will include what she will do once that day arrives.
Bobby is captain of the 118 firehouse but based on the way his storylines have been treated since 2x16 “Bobby Begins Again”, the only way new viewers would know that he’s the captain is by reading his helmet. He hasn’t had a storyline that didn’t include Athena since season 2 when he got suspended. Yes, they are married but Athena’s had several storylines that didn’t include Bobby because he was just there for her moral support like he was in 6x3. What happened after Bobby was shot in 4x14 “Survivors”? Did he go to therapy? Like Eddie’s shooting, Bobby’s shooting was told from his partner’s, Athena’s perspective so the audience would like to know how Bobby dealt with or is still dealing with being gunned down by a former LAPD sniper? Eddie had panic attacks (of course his attacks were about more than him being shot again) but Bobby’s the captain and his team was in danger. He told Eddie in 5x18 that it’s his job to protect his team; therefore a sniper who was targeting firefighters had to be traumatic for all of them. There’s a lot to explore with his character including his legacy firefighting family, his interactions with other fire captains and he should be training someone to take over as captain of the 118 since he and Athena are maturing which means they will have to face retirement at some point in the future. When will the audience be introduced to someone, anyone from his family of legacy firefighters? Are his parents still alive? How many brothers does he have? Is he the youngest, oldest or in the middle? Does he still communicate with them or did they write Bobby off after he caused the apartment fire that killed his wife, children and more than 100 other people in Minnesota? Has his family met Athena? It’s a fair question because Athena’s parents met him during season 2 but other than his deceased wife and children, no one has seen any of Bobby’s family. It would be interesting if one of his brothers moved to L.A. to join the LAFD after being involved in a scandal in Minnesota. The audience hardly knows anything substantial about Bobby so it would be great if he could get a storyline that’s all his own. He’s getting older which means he can’t keep working as a firefighter/captain forever. Also why can’t he be sent to an LAFD retreat with other fire captains so they can discuss any problems/solutions that happened within their firehouses, i.e. Jonah Greenway? When will Bobby be allowed to deal with all the guilt he’s been carrying for years? In season 1, he had continuous conversations with his priest about the things he experienced on the job but he hasn’t been shown talking to his priest in more than 5 seasons. It was clear in 5x3 “Desperate Measures” after Harry had been kidnapped by Jeffrey that he still prays. Also Bobby is still carrying the guilt associated with the Jonah situation from 5x17 “Hero Complex” but it hasn’t been mentioned since he poured that bottle of alcohol down the drain after Eddie left. How is he dealing with the fact that two of his paramedics were almost killed by someone he hired? When Chimney said, “The call was coming from inside of the house” in 5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia” regarding his and Maddie’s breakup, his statement can also be applied to the Jonah situation because unlike 4x13 “Suspicion” and 4x14 “Survivors”, the call/traitor was already inside of the 118 and the LAFD not the LAPD; therefore Bobby should be in therapy discussing the way he feels responsible for hiring Jonah which put his two best paramedics in danger. He should also be working with Chief Alonso to implement some standards regarding new hires to prevent someone like Jonah from being hired again. Additionally he can send LD back to the 147 where she came from since she was hired at the same time as Jonah and Bobby was shown to not trust her in 5x18. Why hasn’t he done any evaluations with Chimney, Hen, Eddie and Buck? He should have annual performance reviews with them to determine what their goals and aspirations are and/or where they want to be from a career perspective within the next 3 to 5 years. If he knew what everyone wanted to accomplish, then there wouldn’t have been a need for him to go through the motions of choosing LD in 6x1 “Let the Games Begin” to be interim captain since he didn’t ask anyone to do it and he just assumed her 10 years of experience made her more than qualified for the job. It appears he and Athena like to be detectives and solve crimes during their off time so maybe the show could explore them thinking about starting a detective agency when they retire which would be a callback to 4x12 “Treasure Hunt” since they worked together to find the treasure. Bobby’s the leader of the 118 and while he has been there for his team, whenever they needed him, when is someone going to be there for him like Eddie was in 5x18 “Starting Over”? Bobby needs his own storyline that revolves around him being a fire captain but it doesn’t have to be about everyone else at the 118.
Chimney hasn’t had a storyline since season 3 when Albert arrived in 3x11 “Seize the Day” and prior to that he didn’t have one that wasn’t linked to Maddie since season 1 when he had the rebar through his skull and it included his relationship with Tatiana. Even during season 2, since he was stabbed by Maddie’s husband Doug, that storyline doesn’t count as one that was solely about Chimney. Season 5A could have been the perfect time to give him an awesome storyline since he was a single father after Maddie left. Buck, Albert and the Lees could have helped him raise Jee-Yun while she was away but just like everything else on the show, the storyline they chose didn’t make any narrative sense at all. Why was a paramedic, who had a 6-month-old baby, sent on a road trip to drive across the United States to find Maddie when he could have been at home working and getting help with their daughter from her two uncles? Maddie could have been sent to an in-treatment center in Northern California if they didn’t want her to be in L.A. (more on Maddie in the Maddie section) but that would have been too easy or made too much sense. Also Chimney could have his own storyline in season 6 regarding the way he's struggling with learning to trust Maddie again. It was clear in 6x1 that he still has trust issues with her because he told Eddie and Bobby that he was still waiting for…after they had their one-night stand. Of course his trust is still affected since she left and didn’t tell him where she was going. Also it would be a callback to season 1 with all of the trust issues he’s had with women like Tatiana when he didn’t believe he was enough so he told her stories about other firefighters instead of telling her the true stories about himself. This is one of the many storylines that just evaporated into thin air and wasn’t revisited. Maybe they should have kept his and Maddie’s couple’s therapy in 6x1 instead of foregoing it for a lackluster blimp emergency that only had two emergencies and was over before the first commercial break. Also Chimney had a rebar in his skull after he got into an accident in 1x3 which means him being trapped in a car with a drunk driver in 6x4 should have been somewhat traumatizing for him. Additionally his brother Albert was involved in the drunk driver accident on the freeway in season 4 so that too should have prompted a reaction from Chimney since he could have died if the driver would have wrecked his car. Why wasn’t he allowed to go to therapy to discuss that? He went to therapy after the stabbing and he mentioned it to the team in 3x9 “Fallout”. How is Chimney dealing with almost being killed by Jonah in 5x17 “Hero Complex”? That had to be traumatizing since his heart was stopped twice. Yes, he and Hen discussed it while they were in the hospital but Chimney literally could have died at the hands of someone they all trusted (except for Hen because she never trusted Jonah). Finally Chimney could have a storyline about helping Eddie become a full paramedic since they’ve been paired together throughout season 6 instead of them just being together to make jokes and laugh at things about curses like they did in 6x7 “Cursed” which was almost identical to the way their friendship was portrayed in 4x6 “Jinx”. Chimney could be his mentor and help Eddie get whatever certifications he needs to become a full paramedic instead of him continuing to be a medic. What are Chimney’s goals? Does he want to be captain at another firehouse someday? Why can’t he be the lieutenant at the 118? Does the 118 even have a lieutenant? These are topics that could be explored instead of just keeping him on the sidelines to sit in the bathtub with Maddie to talk about her job like they did in in 6x5 “Home Invasion”. Have they even had any meaningful conversations since 6x1? No but they certainly had a lot of time to talk about Magda, the nanny Maddie ended up re-homing at the end of 6x5. Why can’t Chimney’s storyline involve the dangers associated with the job especially since he has a daughter now who needs him to come back home? Are they ever going to talk about him being trapped in that car with a drunk driver? Probably not but Chimney needs a storyline that’s all his own so that he can get closure on things that haven’t been resolved since season 1.
Christopher could receive his own storylines since he’s older and he has asked Eddie for more independence. He was skipping science club meetings to meet with his friends so maybe a storyline that illustrates how he has to make a tough decision like skipping school instead of just skipping science club meetings could be beneficial. It would show that he knows how to take care of himself since he told Eddie in 6x4 that he wasn’t a baby and that he didn’t need Eddie to take care of him. He’ll be entering his teen years soon which means he should start having storylines all on his own like the crush he has on someone he goes to school with that was mentioned in 6x8.
Hen’s most recent medical school storyline ended in 6x6 “Tomorrow”, however prior to that, she hasn’t had a storyline all of her own that didn’t include the others from the 118 since her and Karen were foster parents and had to deal with Evangeline’s, Nia’s mom, return; since her mother, Toni showed up during season 4 or since Eva returned in 5x7 “Ghost Stories” to say she was moving away (Hen and Karen’s interactions with Eva could have happened OFFSCREEN! She could have written them a letter to say she was leaving forever so that Karen didn’t have to talk to her). In season 5, her medical school storyline was practically ignored except for in 5x6 “Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1” but Toni’s storyline was front and center in 5x9 “Past is Prologue”. Hen was the only one who was ALWAYS suspicious of Jonah so what happened after they were adult napped and tortured by him? That was Jonah’s storyline not hers so will she be called to testify before a grand jury or will he be taken to trial? Has anything else happened with Jonah or are they going to act like Jonah just went to prison until two more seasons have passed like they did with Jeffrey and Athena? It was obvious in 5x18 that she was still upset about it because she was the one who turned off the TV when the announcer mentioned TayKay. How is Hen dealing with the fact that she had to watch Chimney’s heart be stopped by Jonah? She discussed it with him in 5x17 but that had to be hard for her to watch as her best friend’s heart was stopped, not once but twice. She was very distraught after she hit that woman with the ambulance in 3x8 “Malfunction” so the incident with Jonah should have warranted some type of therapy session instead of it just being resolved and everyone moved on from it. What does the future hold for Hen? Will she and Karen start fostering children again since Hen dropped out of medical school and their lives won’t change the way the social worker said Karen told her their lives would? Hen was an excellent interim captain so what are her future career goals? Is she just planning to be a paramedic until she retires? Does she even want to be a captain again? Is there a role as a lead paramedic she could aspire to obtain? What will she do now? Since she’s been in medical school will she be allowed to implement the medical training she learned as a paramedic or will it be like it was in season 3 where she’ll get reprimanded for performing a medical procedure that she wasn’t supposed to? Since she’s no longer in medical school, there should be a way to incorporate the things she learned into her job as a paramedic. Maybe she and Chimney could both work with Eddie to help him become a full paramedic. All three of them have been working as paramedics since the beginning of season 6 so it would make narrative sense if that was an option they decided to implement for her storyline. Also based on the synopsis for 6x9 “Red Flag”, Denny is supposed to ask about his biological parents again so hopefully they WILL NOT BRING EVA BACK because Hen and Karen have suffered enough. They are happy now especially after Karen and Denny were in danger in 6x6. Can Hen get her own storyline that doesn’t involve or include Eva? It would be great if she could because there are so many other things that could be explored with her character. She’s a natural born leader and now that she and Bobby had a conversation about her being the interim captain there shouldn’t be any guessing as to what her character can do next.
Maddie’s storylines are always GLOOM AND DOOM and even though the actress has the ability to cry and it’s unmatched by some, it would be nice if some of her storylines didn’t revolve around her ability to cry. Many viewers have commented that they are tired of seeing Maddie cry in almost every episode and if one were to view her scenes, it’s true, her storylines always have her crying. The audience gets the fact that she was in an abusive marriage and while no one expects for her to ever be over that, there should be some lighthearted storylines that can be written for her. During season 5, was the only option to let Maddie run all the way to Boston to learn how to stop running? Seriously? She couldn’t learn how to do that from a treatment center located in Northern California? It wasn’t like she went to Boston and visited the house she and Doug lived in or to move on from that part of her life. Actually, she said her goodbyes to Doug in 3x10 “Christmas Spirit” when Frank took her back to the woods where she killed him so the Boston thing didn’t make a lot of sense or the storyline didn’t include enough details for it to make narrative sense. Also she tried to help a woman who was being abused by her husband in 3x8, the woman accused Maddie of stalking her and Maddie almost got fired because of it. Therefore it would make sense if a position was created within the dispatch center that would allow Maddie to incorporate specific protocols for callers who are involved in domestic abuse situations that would get them the assistance they need like she was able to obtain for Lourdes in 6x4. Since Maddie experienced domestic violence and it’s obvious from the call she took from Claribel that it still affects her, she should be allowed to start a First Responder’s Foundation for Victims of Domestic Violence within the call center and she should be allowed to assist with those types of calls if and when needed. There are so many things that can be written that are lighthearted and fun especially since Jee-Yun is growing up. Why can’t she have a mother daughter day with her? Or maybe she could take some different types of 9-1-1 calls instead of her always taking calls that reignite her personal traumas? Why can’t she take a call from a child who needs help with their homework in CANON? She mentioned they take calls like that to Albert in 5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia” but she’s never been the one taking them. Maddie had to raise Buck practically on her own when their parents emotionally checked out of their lives so that is definitely a topic that could be explored since some children have to step up when their parents won’t in real life. Also Maddie said in 5x12 “Boston” that she doesn’t talk to her mother about things like depression so that would be a good storyline for her to have with Margaret. Maybe they need to talk to each other directly without Philip and Buck being present so that Maddie can tell her how she felt as a 9-year-old who had to become a mother way before it was time since her little brother, Evan needed her. That conversation could be EPIC if it’s handled properly and Maddie should be able to share how she doesn’t want Jee-Yun to experience the types of things she had to experience while she lived with them in Hershey, PA. Maddie’s storylines should be allowed to evolve and show how much she’s grown since she had the courage to leave Doug in season 2 and since she’s been able to rebuild her life and happiness. It hasn’t always been sunbeams and moon pies but she’s trying and things are getting better. She still has a long way to go but she’s back at work and she told Chimney that she missed the call center in 5x18 so she’s on the right path.
May’s season 4 and 5 dispatcher storyline was never shown to be closed because there were two things that were left unresolved. May was never told about the cause of Claudette’s death since they finally became acquaintances in 5x16 “May Day” while they were in the quiet room which wasn’t long before Claudette died. This is especially jarring since May was the one who said, “Hen, she was fine. I don’t understand” at the hospital and she also said, “It feels like it should be somebody’s fault” after the funeral in 5x17. Did anyone tell her that it was Jonah? It obviously wasn’t a secret since Taylor broadcasted the story to the greater L.A. area before the man had even been charged so why couldn’t the show have included a scene that had May asking Bobby about what happened to her? Or maybe she could have had a conversation with Hen and Athena about it. The second thing that didn’t receive any closure involved May not being shown telling her friends and co-workers goodbye after she worked at dispatch for two years. Like Eddie, she just left dispatch in 5x18 but neither of them were shown talking with the other people who worked there before they left. Finally where are they taking her storyline now that she’s in college? Especially since she had to revert back to using her 9-1-1 dispatcher skills in 6x8 “9-1-1 What’s Your Fantasy?” What’s her major in college? Is she still planning to be a lawyer or will she change her mind after 6x8 and become a police officer like Athena? One thing that would close one of her storylines is if she could participate in her college campus’ suicide prevention center since she was affected by the 9-1-1 call she took where the young woman took a lot of pills but was saved after the paramedics arrived. She could also be a student career counselor because she worked for two years before she decided to enroll in college. Even though the actress is enrolled in college in real life, her storylines could be more exciting than just having her rescue her boyfriend Darius from the disturbed roommate who assaulted him in 6x8.
Eddie’s storylines are always shortened and his scenes are crammed in at the end or somewhere during the middle of an episode but they always end abruptly and it seems like some of his scenes were being cut or didn’t get filmed. That’s how his hero storyline was handled in 5x17 “Hero Complex” because his part was over right after the 30-minute mark within the episode which also includes the airtime used for commercials. The reconciliation scene with Ramon just ended and it was like, ok all is good now with Ramon and Eddie since they made up but there weren’t any additional scenes to confirm that until 6x4. Also most of the time his storylines get sidelined so that the spotlight can be pointed towards Buck. His introduction in 2x1 “Under Pressure” was shown from Buck’s perspective and most of his storylines have continued in that manner. Eddie had a support system with his abuela and his aunt when he first moved to L.A. but once Buck stepped in and introduced him to Carla in 2x4, Isabel and Pepa were sidelined and only included in episodes that have Eddie’s other family members in it, the Christmas party at the 118 in 3x10 or his welcome home party in 4x14 which also included TayKay (who everyone knows Eddie never liked and therefore her being there didn’t make any NARRATIVE SENSE other than to keep the audience from believing that Buck and Eddie will end up in a romantic relationship) but his abuela and aunt were barely shown in seasons 3, 4 and 5. He hasn’t had a storyline that was solely about Eddie since season 3 when he started participating in that fight club in 3x5 “Rage” that didn’t end until 3x8 “Malfunction” and that too was somehow made to be about Buck because Buck made that about himself in 3x9 when he asked Eddie if he really wanted to punch him while he was fighting. In 3x15 “Eddie Begins” the whole episode and storyline was supposed to be ABOUT EDDIE (hence the title Eddie Begins) but one of the most memorable scenes from that episode included Buck clawing at the ground in an effort to dig Eddie up with his hands. Eddie was sidelined from his own shooting in 4x13 and 4x14 because even though Eddie was the one who got shot, THE AUDIENCE NEVER HEARD anything from Eddie about The Shooting based on the way it affected him because just like Bobby’s shooting was told from Athena’s perspective, Eddie’s was all told from Buck’s perspective. Bobby told Buck that what happened to Eddie wasn’t his fault and even when Buck arrived at the hospital after Eddie woke up from his coma, Buck told him it should have been him who got shot instead of Eddie. Eddie’s panic attacks were also overshadowed by Buck because Buck was the one who made Eddie tell him what was going on in 5x2 and he was also the one who told Eddie to break up with Ana. The same thing happened with most of Eddie’s PTSD storyline because he told Buck to move on in 5x11 “Outside Looking In” but he said it during the dinner he prepared for Buck that took place at his house but Buck brought TayKay with him which also didn’t make any narrative sense because EDDIE HAS ALWAYS DISLIKED TAYLOR so her being there was JARRING. Then he walked into the bar, looked at Buck and left because he felt left out since he quit firefighting. To top it all off Eddie’s breakdown was also told from Buck’s perspective in 5x13 because the audience didn’t see the destruction he caused to his bedroom, only the aftermath was shown after Buck broke down Eddie’s bedroom door. His breakdown scenes were shortened and pushed to the end of 5x13 when there was only 5 minutes left before the episode ended and it seemed like a lot of the scenes were left out and that was confirmed when a season 5 “We are family” recap video for 9-1-1 surfaced and it included some unseen breakdown footage of Eddie and Buck that never made it into the episode. Even the Equine Therapy scene was overshadowed with Buck and TayKay because he asked her to help him find Charlie when he should have been allowed to talk to Athena especially since she’s a REAL POLICE SERGEANT and not some amateur detective like TayKay was in 5x7 “Ghost Stories”. They didn’t let Eddie tell Buck to break up with Taylor in 5x18 even though they should have because Buck was the one who told him to end it with Ana in 5x2. Now Eddie has his own storyline and it’s all about Christopher growing up and Eddie learning how to let go so that Christopher can have some independence. That too is being overshadowed by Buck’s ridiculous sperm donor storyline because it’s preventing him from being there for Eddie and Christopher ONSCREEN. It’s been clear for a while to viewers who’ve cared to notice that BUCK AND EDDIE HAVE BEEN CO-PARENTING Christopher for years so it’s not a stretch for viewers to notice that something is off with their relationship in season 6. While it's obvious that they are talking to each other OFFSCREEN, hence the Hoover handoff in 6x5, it doesn’t make any sense especially when they’ve always been within arm’s reach of each other. Buck has always been there for them even when Eddie’s deceased wife was present in 2x10 “Merry X-Mas” because Eddie took Buck with him so that Christopher could visit with Santa instead of taking his wife who is also Christopher’s mother. Is Eddie still in therapy? If so, it would be nice to see more of his sessions especially since he hasn’t been shown talking to Frank since 5x14. What is going on with Eddie and Helena, his mother? He went to El Paso for Ramon’s retirement party in 5x17 but he never told his mother how she affected him while he was growing up. Reminder, Ramon wasn’t there since he spent 40 years traveling for work but she was so it doesn’t make any narrative sense for Eddie to avoid having an in-depth conversation with her too. He’s talking to Ramon regularly but does he talk to Helena? Where is Eddie’s Tia’ Pepa? We haven’t seen her since 5x17 and she still lives in L.A. so that doesn’t make any sense either. Since Christopher is getting older and is almost a teenager now, is it still necessary for Carla to be involved with Eddie’s and Christopher’s father/son moments? It seems like those moments would be better served if they happened with someone from his family instead of with Carla. While Carla was in 5x10 “Wrapped in Red” and she was also mentioned in 5x18, why couldn’t Tia’ Pepa have been the one who was allowed to help Eddie and Christopher get ready for the dance since Buck wasn’t allowed to do it? Pepa knows Eddie better than anyone except for his abuela Isabel, therefore she would be able to provide more insight about his feelings regarding his son growing up along with the things Eddie will have to start doing for himself. What are Eddie’s goals now that Christopher is growing up? What will he do other than sit home alone whenever Christopher’s gone out with his friends? Does he want to move up in the LAFD? Or is he happy where he is now as a firefighter and medic? He needs a storyline all his own too just like Chimney and Bobby. Can the audience please see Eddie and Karen’s friendship ONSCREEN instead of them having to scan through episodes to see them standing next to each other to try and figure out when they became friends? A wine night between the two of them would be EPIC! Also can the audience please get some serious ONSCREEN conversations happening between Eddie and Chimney? After 6x5 when Eddie went to Chimney’s apartment, it was evident that they are friends but their friendship is never shown outside of the firehouse. They had breakfast in 6x2 so that would have been a great time to show them talking about other things like Chimney’s trust issues with Maddie so that Eddie could give him advice on how he handled or didn’t handle the trust issues he had with his deceased wife. There are so many things that can be done with Eddie’s character but they’re being overshadowed and ignored.
Buck gets the most and the longest storylines of any main character on the show and he’s also included in almost everyone else’s storylines. But it hasn’t always been like that because in seasons 2 and 3 his storylines lasted for a maximum of 1 to 4 episodes but now his storylines last for 14-18 episodes and one carried over from season 4 into season 5. He’s a part of an ensemble cast which means everyone should receive an equal and balanced number of storylines but that’s not happening. The storylines for Buck aren’t even good ones because they don’t show him growing, progressing or maturing and the audience is not happy about any of it. Comments from audience members that have been posted on different social media platforms include: “Whiny baby!”, “I hate Buck’s sperm donor story with my very being”, “He’s so immature.”, “I can’t watch his scenes anymore”; “When are they going to let Buck grow up?”, “I just fast forward through his scenes now”, “OMG, he’s becoming so hard to watch”, “Stop regressing him”, “Buck just gets stupider and stupider every season”, “Is Buck going to always be someone’s punching bag?” and the list goes on and on. His storylines have been all over the place during season 6 and it started with him wanting to be interim captain but that ended after he moved his leather chair to the middle of his living room in 6x1. Then he started his search for happiness in 6x2 “Crash and Learn” but he quickly abandoned it after Lev died while they were on the scene at the Happiness Convention. Then he started a year of saying “yes to the possibilities” but that dropped off after he agreed to be a sperm donor for his former roommate in 6x4 which doesn’t make any NARRATIVE sense because he hadn’t talked to Connor in more than 3 years. He was hiding it from his found family which means he really didn’t want to do it but he made the donation anyway in 6x7 and now he’s spending all his spare time with Hen since they’ve had several conversations about his “swimmers”. Buck constantly blames himself for everything (including things he has no control over), he makes other people’s problems about him, he never admits when he’s hurting and unhappy and since he’s not being allowed to grow and mature, the audience would like to know when his storylines will show the way he’s grown over the past six years. If he’s supposed to be regressing or suffering from some mental health issues then it’s not translating well to the audience because his erratic behavior isn’t much different from where it was in the past. What’s with the showrunners’ fascination with what’s in Buck’s pants? Every season his storylines revolve around someone trying to get into his pants. In season 1 it was the random women he hooked up with, Dr. Wells and Abby. In season 2 it was Taylor and Ali, in seasons 4 and 5 it was Taylor and in season 6 it’s Kameron, even though she’s doing it indirectly through her husband Connor. There’s an abundance of storylines available for each character but for some reason Buck gets most of them and his storylines always drag out for 18 episodes unlike everyone else’s, who is lucky enough to even get a storyline, are usually over within 2 to 3 episodes. Buck should be written as more than just a HIMBO who hooks up with women because he has other characteristics that aren’t being properly explored. He was an excellent mentor to TK in the LS Crossover episode 2x3 “Hold the Line” when Owen and Hen were missing after their helicopter crashed. He told TK that even though his captain wasn’t his dad, he may as well be because Bobby never gives up on him even after he stole the firetruck. But one year later, on OG when Buck was training Ravi in 5x5 “Peer Pressure” he acted like a narcissist and didn’t treat Ravi with any respect at all. That would have been the perfect time for Bobby to step in and tell Buck that he didn’t train him like that so he should have been more of a leader especially if he wants to become a captain someday. But that was probably too much because Buck wanted to transfer out of the 118 after he saw Ravi getting a simple pat on the back from Bobby for doing a job well done. Please explore Buck’s other characteristics instead of continuing to use recurring characters who are being incorporated into his storylines for the sole purpose of doing the same things to him that his parents did which was use him for his body parts because he’s smart and he has a lot to offer. Not only does Buck get a lot of storylines that drag on for multiple seasons; he’s also included in other people’s storylines as well. For example, instead of either Karen, Athena or Chimney being the one to encourage Hen to ask her professor to retake her exam in 6x4, it was an offhanded albeit drunk comment from Buck that caused her to make the decision when he said, “You would have made one heck of a great doctor” after she helped the 118 with a call about Hoover the dog. Why was Buck the one searching that woman’s house in 6x5 after Athena told him they had already completed a sweep of the house and didn’t find anyone? Shouldn’t a detective have gone searching in the kitchen? Buck has time to go to a Renaissance Faire with Hen and Denny in 6x8 but he couldn’t go to Christopher’s school with Eddie for Christopher’s first dance? Why didn’t Buck admit how unhappy he was in 5x18 when he broke up with TayKay instead of admitting something he already knew about her? The available interim captain spot in 6x1 was another storyline that was made to include Buck but nothing came of it since he stopped talking about it. He asked Hen about happiness in 6x2 but just like the interim captain spot, nothing came of that either. It made sense for Eddie to show up at Marisol’s house since he was in the ambulance with Chimney when they transported her brother to the hospital in 6x5 but why was Buck there instead of Chimney? Or in fact, why wasn’t all of the 118 present to help repair her house instead of just Buck and Eddie and all those other people the audience didn’t recognize? Why is Hen not telling Buck things he needs to consider about being a sperm donor since they are besties now? Why is Buck not talking to anyone about his decision to be a sperm donor? He’s always told everyone what’s going on in his personal life so this storyline DOESN’T MAKE ANY NARRATIVE SENSE because he’s acting OOC. Will it end soon since the Buckleys will be present in 6B? How much longer will Buck be regressed back to the season 1 version of himself? While it’s true he’s not having sex with random people anymore, he’s still not able to make any formidable decisions for himself. Buck had a conversation with Thomas in 2x8 “Buck Actually” more than 5 years ago but he still hasn’t grasped what Thomas told him. Basically Thomas told him that he could live his life however he chooses and love whomever he wants to in order to be happy but Buck STILL DOESN’T UNDERSTAND. He talked with Red almost three years ago in 3x16 “The One That Got Away” but he’s still not getting it because he's supposed to be building a life for himself instead of being committed to his job but he is still stuck and continues to neglect building a life of his own which is the exact opposite of what Red told him to do. Eddie and Christopher are right in front of him but he keeps looking past them. Then Lev told him months ago in 6x2 about the secret to happiness but Buck missed it. He was supposed to realize that he can choose to be happy now instead of waiting until he’s Lev’s age and regretting everything he did since it would all end up being a blur anyway. Buck’s storylines could be so much better than the way they are being portrayed but for some reason the ones being chosen for him keep him looking like a HIMBO. He isn’t portrayed like that when he’s with Eddie because when they’re together he's more of a HUSBAND. It would be great if the show finally allowed Buck to mature and grow so that he can realize what’s in front of him. It’s the family he’s always wanted with Eddie and Christopher but for some reason they keep putting people in his path within the storylines to stunt his growth and to delay him and Eddie from becoming a romantic couple.
Buck’s storylines have been drawn out to last for entire seasons while Bobby and Chimney haven’t had dedicated storylines since season 2 for Bobby and season 3 for Chimney. Any storylines they’ve had were inextricably linked to Athena for Bobby and Maddie for Chimney. Eddie gets storylines but they’re always sidelined or overshadowed by the ridiculous storylines that have only shown Buck regressing and not growing. Other than Hen’s medical school storyline (which is over) it appears there aren’t any plans to do anything other than have her possibly have to talk to Eva again since Denny will ask about his biologically parents in 6x9 “Red Flag”. Instead of recurring characters being brought on solely for Buck’s storylines that last for 18 episodes, recurring characters should also be considered for the other mains’ storylines too. There’s no reason why Captain Mehta couldn’t be brought back to have conversations with Bobby or another fire captain from a different firehouse. Maybe they could bring back RAVI since the audience loves his character but his storylines have been vaporized and it’s like he was never on the show since they won’t mention the character anymore. Recent comments from viewers on one social media platform have stated how they will decide after 6x9 “Red Flag” airs if they will return to watch in 6B because they haven’t enjoyed the first 8 episodes of the season so far. While the second half of the season appears to be promising, it has a long way to go if the show wants to get all of the viewers who stopped watching in 5B and to prevent those who might decide to stop watching after 6x9 to return. The storylines have to be better for the second half or they might risk losing even more viewers than they already have. Just like at the end of 5B, the audience is EXHAUSTED but season 6 won’t be halfway finished until after 6x9 airs, therefore this shouldn’t be happening especially since all the mains are present and accounted for during season 6. Also with 5 million or fewer viewers watching episodes each week, it appears all the show cares about are the demo numbers instead of reading the complaints from viewers that continue to be posted regarding the way something seems to be missing from the show. The number of viewers they have achieved this season is still a far cry from the success of other shows that have been on for a lot longer. Hopefully things will be better in March 2023 and storylines will become more balanced for the entire ensemble cast.

A Monkberry Moon Delight lyrical analysis because it is the greatest song of the 20th century
Monkberry Moon Delight is a song from Paul McCartney's 1971 album Ram. The song is generally considered to be surrealist 'nonsense' lyrics a la Lennon's late Beatles work like 'I am the Walrus' and 'Glass Onion'. But if we know anything about Paul (and Lennon-McCartney in general), he tends to put deeper emotions into his songs, often with out meaning to and without his direct knowledge:
"I don't write anything consciously, Sometime when I'm pissed off with John over Apple business a line might creep in." - Interview with Disc And Music Echo (Nov. 20, 1971)
"Songwriting is like psychiatry; you sit down and dredge up something that's inside, bring it out front." - Interview with Robert Palmer for the New York Times (April 25, 1982)
" But in a song, that's where you can [share your innermost thoughts]. That's the place to put them. You can start to reveal truths and feelings." - Interview with John Wilson fork BBC 4's (May 24, 2016)
And my favorite because it's y'know...in a song: "And when I'm gone, I leave my message in my song" - Beware My Love (Wings at the Speed of Sound, 1976)
All that being said, in my opinion, Monkberry Moon Delight is a projection of Paul's feelings of anxiety about his post-Beatles public/critical reception and his reaction to John Lennon's antagonism post-divorce. Specifically, he details his writing of Too Many People as a response to John's antagonism and the making of Ram as an attempt to recapture public attention/praise.
For context: Monkberry Moon Delight was first written/demoed at some point from May-August 1970 on his farm in Scotland. Paul's late 1969-1970 Scotland era is complicated. He often describes it as being one of the most difficult periods of his life because of the break-up of the Bealtes, the Apple financial troubles, his frayed relationship with John, and starting a whole new life which all compounded into a deep depression and alcohol abuse.
Let's start with the title and chorus. In Paul's own words, Monkberry Moon Delight comes from his kids mispronunciation of the word 'milk' and establishes MMD as a fantastical drink like 'Love Potion No. 9'. I think Paul obviously hides behind the surrealism of the lyric but its association with family and domesticity makes an interesting contrast. Though he is happy to be in his escapist domestic fantasy in Scotland, he juxtaposes this with the underlying pressure to be acclaimed (especially after being considered the greatest artist in the world for ten years). Though the song has a peppy, jaunty beat there is an air of anxiety developed through the songs key of C minor and the staccato of the piano and bass parts. His vocals also have a similar strained desperation like 'Oh! Darling'.
The lyrics:
So I sat in the attic, a piano up my nose
And the wind played a dreadful cantata
Paul starts with himself, writing. 'The attic' may be a reference to John Lennon's recording studio that he had built in his attic in Weybridge where he and Paul would often go to write.
"We nearly always went up to his little music room that he'd built at the top of the house, Daddy's Room, where we would get away from it all. I like to get away from people to songwrite, I don't like to do it in front of people. It's like sex for me" - Many Years from Now. Whether or not this is a direct reference to 'Daddy's Room', Paul is known to prefer small, confined spaces for songwriting.
'Piano up my nose' to me shows a rapt attention, leaning so close to his piano its almost up his nose. He is intently and passionately composing his 'dreadful cantata', this cantata I believe refers to "To Many People". Based on this record of the order of demos on the Ram cassette, it seems that Too Many People may have been written (or at least recorded) before Monkberry, which furthers my belief that Paul is making a meta narration of the writing of his song which he recognizes was very pointed or dreadful.
Sore was I from a crack of an enemy's hose
And the horrible sound of tomato
Here he describes what spurred him to writing this song, and this album as a whole. The 'crack from an enemy's hose' could refer to Allen Klein's treatment of Paul during the final months of the Beatles and his attempted mishandling of the release of McCartney (1970). (Note: The crack could also be from Phil Spector, the press, Ringo, George, Yoko or John; Paul is kind of getting shit from all sides right now). The 'sound of tomato' implies the idea of throwing tomatoes at an artist to express dislike or dissatisfaction, referencing the poor critical reception of McCartney (1970).
Ketchup, soup and puree
Don't get left behind
Ketchup, soup, and puree; liquidy tomatoes because splat, splat, splat go the critics. And ketchup because catch up pun.
Don't get left behind is the central theme of this song. He is worried that the public is going to forget about him while he's depressed, away in Scotland, and making critical flops. This is him desperately clinging onto the hearts of the public. Because we all know how much Paul needs to be liked.
When a rattle of rats had awoken
The sinews, the nerves, and the veins
The 'rattle of rats' could be any of the number of people who were getting on his nerves, sinews, and veins (pissing him tf off) in 1970. This could again be referencing the great "Let's all gang up on Paul McCartney" game of 1970 but because of the subsequent lyrics, I think this may be more specifically about John (and Yoko). Either way, it was these rats who annoyed him into getting to work.
My piano was boldly outspoken
And attempts to repeat his refrain
'Boldly outspoken' again connects this song to TMP. The line is similar to the TMP lyric 'This is crazy and baby, it's not like me' in the sense that both show how audacious he sees this songs as. In 'attempting to repeat his refrain' I think Paul is using the 'well he started it' justification for TMP because he's sees it as a repeat, of him rising to John's level of insults.
So I stood with a knot in my stomach and I gazed at that terrible sight
Of two youngsters concealed in a barrel, sucking Monkberry Moon Delight
Ah yes my favorite moment in all of music ever. This is the verse that really convinced me that this song may be referencing JohnandYoko. The 'youngsters in a barrel' alludes to John and Yoko's bag piece, where they would get into a black bag for...peace? As seen in Get Back, this particularly irked/disturbed Paul. "Go get in your bag. The Merseybeat award for couple of the year, goes to John and Yoko" (Get Back Episode 2). He also refers to them as 'the young lovers' in Get Back during the infamous January 13th 'and then there were two' conversation. Even though it makes him nervous and sick, part of Paul releasing TMP and Ram is to face up to the JohnandYoko powerhouse which was a non-insignificant portion of his early 1970 criticism.
Well I know my banana is older than the rest
and my hair is a tangled baretta
Here I think he is reasoning to the listener, the public, over why he thinks they've abandoned him. Paul recognizes that he has been in this music game a long time (so people may have grown bored of him) and has been depressed (and thus out of the game), his tangled 'baretta' of hair like the wily depression beard he grew out while in Scotland.
Also banana = dick, just so everyone is clear (can anyone find that banana poem from his poetry book? Also this just perpetuates my tinhat theory that all the banana milkshakes Paul got in Paris were just **** **** but I digress). Also something about Paul likening songwriting with sex so him not being 'musically desirable' is because...his music dick is old? Ok Paul.
I leave my pajamas to Billy Budapest
And I don't get the gist of your letter
This is the one lyric I am pretty unsure about. Not that every line has to fit perfectly into my interpretation but I genuinely could not make heads or tails of it. My initial interpretation was that this was referring to Billy Shears, and how during this period the Paul is dead theory regained popularity. This reference adds to the feeling of dissolution he builds in this verse.
But mike on the Beatles Bible seems to remember Billy Budapest as being a children's pajama designer though I have found not evidence of this. However going with this shot in the dark, leaving his pajamas to Billy Budapest could draw back to the theme of his current domesticity and occupation with his children.
The letter in question I believe refers to the infamous letter John and George wrote to Paul changing his McCartney release date that they had Ringo deliver which really set Paul off and kind of began the messiness of the divorce.
Catch Up, cats and kittens
Don't get left behind
Finally we get the pay off to the ketchup-catch up pun and see the resurgence of the theme; Paul feeling like he's falling behind his contemporaries and desperation to catch up.
In typical McCartney fashion, Monkberry Moon Delight is a seemingly shallow and superfluous song but actually reveals a lot about his inner turmoil at the time. Him dealing with the rejection by the critics and John by turning to his piano and creating the absolute banger that is Monkberry. This is why MMD is one of Paul's best, because of how quintessentially Paul it is. Veiling tough emotions behind ambiguous and surreal lyrics masked by a fun and light melody. Oh, the juxtaposition! Oh, the Lennon-McCartney of it all.
Anyways this is a barely organized rambling of thoughts but Monkberry Moon Delight deserves a mega analysis because it is genuinely one of the best songs Paul McCartney has ever made.

I just watched Deadpool & Wolverine and if you follow me, I'm sorry. I will probably not shut up about it for the next month.
If I could describe this movie in 1 word it would be Gratuitous.
Gratuitous action, innuendo, bloodshed, music, meta humour, comedy and it might just save the MCU.
If you're a fan of anything Fox has made with the Marvel IP, you should go see this movie.
If you're a fan of Deadpool (and his comics) you should go see this movie.
If you're a fan of Wolverine (and his comics) you should go see this movie.
If you hate what Disney has done to the idea of a multiverse, you might want to go see this movie. This is the first time this concept has ever felt right to me.
Anyways, I implore you to go watch this film. It's absolutely amazing and I'm still on that high an hour later.
P. P. S. I have absolutely no doubt in my insane mind that the AO3 tag Logan/Wade Wilson will see a lot more use after this movie. (Edit: I was so right, there's 22 and counting right now)
P.S. Stay for the credits, it has a visual love letter to 20th Century Fox and a pretty funny scene when everything is done.
P. P. P. S. Please go see this movie. It's amazing, it's truly a movie that felt like it was made for the fans. Anything you could possibly want is in this movie. I love it, and I really want to share the love!
P. P. P. P. S. (SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT)
No, they don't kiss (but they should have.)

house md fic recs — short fics (<10k). hilson + rarepairs
Other house rec lists: long fics | episode tags | postcanon | infidelity trope (all of these are mutually exclusive apart from the infidelity one)
highly recommend not skipping out on the non-hilson fics!! scroll to the end for a list of some really great ones. No huddy though because I'm not the biggest fan.
house/wilson and gen fic
I decided to just lump the gen fic together with the slash because really most of them can be read as slash with a G rating. Before we get into the fics, here are some notable authors that have written several house fics. Not all their fics are going to be listed individually, but if I have the author there I've read all or a lot of their stuff and enjoyed it, so I recommend going through their backlog.
otter: Some really excellent prose and great atmosphere. A little soft, a little pensive. And they nail the characterisation and dialogue.
ignaz: im sure everyone has read ignaz's longfic (a modest proposal and its sequel — the one where house and wilson get married so wilson cant testify against house in the tritter arc) but absolutely check out all their other stuff — it's all quality.
bironic: I really enjoy the bit of edge in bironic's fics. It makes them so yummy.
bethfrish: What stands out about their fics is how they peer into all the pointy edges of Wilson and Julie's relationship, thus making them excellent and unique Wilson character studies. Great prose and dialogue that rivals the show's.
Transformatron: fics that are transcendent and porny, all featuring a d/s undertone or theme (wilson as the dom)
astolat: if u dont know astolat idk what to say to u. just go read their fics.
blackmare (livejournal / ao3 pseud 1 / ao3 pseud 2 / lj pseud third_owl for slash fics i think) Does really great short fics (mostly gen) that slot into episodes. Like meta but in fic form. All of them are worth a read. Some of their fics are on ao3 but a lot aren't (like nearly all the episodic ones).
Namaste (livejournal / ff.net): Some short fics, some much longer ones. Mostly gen focussing on H&W friendship, with some fics on canon pairings. Interesting character studies and exceptionally discerning prose that is a pleasure to read.
In order of length. *faves, ***underrated faves
***Touch by zulu (<1k) (2007) The number of ways House could embarrass him with touches, Wilson thinks, is practically endless.
Silent Sigh by thedeadparrot (<1k) (2009) Wilson, autumn, melancholy, and House. Second person.
Heartbeats by thedeadparrot (<1k) (2009) Three moments in which House and Wilson are almost kind of functional.
No Pain by bironic (<1k) (2008) House finds a permanent solution to his pain problem and convinces Wilson to give him what he needs. Vampire fic! Frottage! hell yeah.
Also check out the sequel: No Mercy by daasgrrl (3k)
***The Game of Wilson: Six Cards in a Five Card Game by paradisecity (1k) (2006) If you're going to play a game like moving in together, decide upon three things at the start: the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time. Fun and snappy. Great dialogue.
*we're getting good at this by ad astra dean (1k) Wilson had a migraine. Established relationship. Soft and sweet and realistic esp after 8.19. fuck. Premium hurt/comfort.
**********three more stories by besselfcn (1k) The first time it happens is (New Orleans, 1991 | Albany, 2009 | Augusta, 2012) and they are (drunk | sober | out of time). This fic emotionally obliterated me. I’m obsessed with the format like it’s prose halfway to poetry, so creative and unique and well-executed??? I cried so much. I am UNWELL and immeasurably fucked up about them put me in my grave. (Yeah I said these lists were mutually exclusive but this fic is the exception bc idc)
The Awakening of Wils-Ankh-Amun, Royal Concubine by blackmare, Nightdog_barks, pwcorgigirl (1k) It was a rather unusual 'morning after.' This is hilarious. Reads like a classic prank episode. They're so dumb together I love them.
The One Where House Has Always Been a Woman by thedeadparrot (1k) (2009) Despite the hospital gossip, House is not, in fact, a man-hating lesbian. Genderswapped House but not Wilson.
Gray Morning by starlingthefool (1k) All he remembers is that the transition between a stupid joke and the meeting of mouths was almost seamless. Christmas fic that takes place one year after "Merry Little Christmas" (3.10).
Loser Day Blues by blackmare, Nightdog_Barks (1k) February fourteenth is just another day, and another evening in which Wilson winds up at House’s, although — this time — not for the usual reasons.
*indefinable by PaintedVanilla (1k) House can hear Wilson getting ready for bed; he can hear him brushing his teeth, undressing, being unusually quiet. Normally there’s a humming; a breathless energy that House won’t admit to loving about him. He doesn’t hear it tonight. It’s dead silent.
criteria by PaintedVanilla (2k) “I don’t think they know that we’re married.”
***We Live Together in a Photograph of Time by ignaz (2k) Wilson's hair curls when they're fucking. God I'm devastated. The ✨atmosphere✨. This is so in character. And can we talk about the banger title and summary??? I was gnawing my arm before I even opened the fic. Set in s4.
***Things To Do Before You Die by thedeadparrot (2k) In which Wilson turns thirty-eight and a half, thinks about kittens, and doesn't have a midlife crisis. But not necessarily in that order. Prank war with a twist. I’m so fond. Hits all the right cadences with the writing.
So Let Us Melt, and Make No Noise by ignaz (2k) (2007) "You kill patients all the time," House said. "You never stay at work until--" He peered at the clock. "--Four in the morning to make sure they're really dead."
***Curiosity by Namaste (2k) (2006) From Cameron's perspective. Fun character study of her and by extension House and the other two musketeers. Not shippy.
Welcomed Change by JammiesDodger (2k) A cute G-rated getting together fic.
Alone, Together by daasgrrl (2k) Finding new ways to be intimate.
*Keep Your Eyes Wide by deepimpact (2k) There is no specific amount of time passed, no big event, no one thing that Wilson can pin as the catalyst. Obsessed with this. Great atmosphere, excellent prose, and and everything feels authentic and in character. Set pre-season/s1.
***Carrion Eaters by ignaz House, in some indeterminate future or an alternate universe, from the perspective of a new hire. I really loved this story. It's sharp and sad, with great build up.
***Projection by bironic (2k) Remember Ali, that really pretty 17/18 year old clinic patient that was obsessed with House? This fic is Wilson's elaborate fantasy about fucking her, which is of course as much about House as it is her. Post 3.04.
***No Exchange of Payment by otter (2k) The gifts that House gives to Wilson. I adore this. It's about the little things. Otter has exceptional prose and always nails the characterisation, which makes their writing a real pleasure to read.
***All the Effects of Intoxication (3k) by otter This only happens when they're drunk. Just as yummy as that one-line description suggests. I love this a lot — the characterisation and dialogue are excellent and I think this scenario is very realistic for them.
Leave This Harbor for the Sea by otter (3k) House was never the kind of friend who'd help you move, even when he'd had two good legs, not to mention two good arms perfectly capable of lifting boxes. He'd always been the sort of friend who'd stop by while you were packing, make cutting remarks about the failures of your romantic relationships, and use all the half-filled boxes as an excuse to root through your things.
***the growing up, the falling down by riceonrye (3k for the series) Wilson is trying to buy a nice make-up present for his girlfriend, but there’s a guy in the shop with him brazenly shoplifting. Wilson, meet House. This is so good!!! I grinned like an idiot all the way through. It captures the throw-bottles-at-windows side of Wilson so well. A very cute AU of a different first meeting whilst still remaining true to the characters. Don't forget to read the sequel as well.
***never rains (but it pours) by Transformatron (3k) So... remember that episode where House can't pee? I present you some excellently written pisskink pwp. Nails the hilson dynamic, so even if piss isn't your thing, give it a go?
***Blind Spot by blackmare, Nightdog_Barks (3k) Wilson becomes blind after a head injury. genfic.
***Four Blocks South of Eden by bethfrish (3k) If you wanted paradise, you're a little off. I loved the tentative, slightly off-kilter feeling of this. Bang on characterisation, dialogue, and use of 2nd person POV (House). Set in s1 — Wilson's marriage is falling apart, and it leads to a night that could be the start of something new.
***Lie To Me by zulu (4k) It's terribly simple. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after. Exuberant ketamine summer House!!! Equal parts sexy and heartbreaking. Check out the sequel as well (1k).
Stumbling Towards Something Real by ignaz (4k) House and Wilson on holiday in Mexico. (A flagrant excuse for smut, basically.) I'm soft. In character and well-written.
Goes the Neighbourhood by Dee_Laundry (4k) One month into their permanent positions, the new fellows catch a case on the weekend and have to track House down.
***Easy by GoldStarGrl (4k) James Wilson is the easiest person in his dorm. At McGill. In all of eastern Canada, maybe. A fleshed-out version of their first meeting, as well as an insightful character study of Wilson. Slots nicely into canon, whether you believe in the "wilson has cheated on every wife with house" version or the "they fucked when they first met and never talked about it again" version. I really enjoyed this — they’re beautifully in character, and it's excellent writing.
***A Momentary Lapse of Reason by otter (5k) Wilson and Julie through House’s eyes, from the beginning to the end. Skips back and forth between the past and now. The quiet yearning!!! Also *standing on the table with a megaphone* have i mentioned how GORGEOUS otter's prose is??
*Blow the Candles Out by bethfrish (5k) Another year older, another year wiser, another divorce lurking just around the corner. So good!!! Wilson celebrates his birthday amongst the detritus of his marriage. The prose is really exceptional here. House's dialogue is also especially well done. It's a fun read that holds up well on a re-read.
***midnight rain by GoldStarGrl (5k) Wilson can't possibly know the pain. But he wants to. I am vibrating!!! Set precanon, in the aftermath of the infarction. Infidelity, spanking, hello??? Hot, vivid, excellent characterisation, excellent writing etc etc. A+ no notes.
***Through The Looking Glass (The Male Gaze Mashup) by zulu (5k) "If Wilson didn't know, great. What he didn't know couldn’t hurt him. If Wilson did know, it didn't matter, because if he hadn't berated House for it yet, then it was permission to continue." Interesting character study of Wilson and the way House slots into his life. Imaginative and fun descriptions. I did feel slightly lost at some points but it was still a great read. Excerpt: House tears open every envelope, even those addressed to Occupant, then brings back the well-read contents like a cat offering half-dead moles to its hunting-deficient human.
Empathy, Inc. by sassyjumper (5k) Cuddy hires a company that provides 'empathy training' to doctors. House reacts. Set in an earlier season.
***All's Fair In Love (and war) by Transformatron (6k) House and Wilson are enjoying the last day of their holiday when an urgent call comes through from Princeton-Plainsboro - a medical mystery that only House can solve. And he does intend to solve it, despite Wilson's best efforts to distract him. (Established relationship.) Wilson making House do a case whilst fucking him?? I'm an absolute sucker for this trope and I was delighted to find a fic with it.
A Towered Citadel by Namaste (7k) A differential diagnosis for Wilson’s serial cheating.
***And the Borders of Old Cities Get Redrawn by blackmare (7k) Continuation/canon divergence from 8.02 "Transplant". Ch1 is the most perfect episode tag I am vibrating . The way they fall back into their old rhythm!! House seeking out his touch like a cat and Wilson accepting it, even liking it!! The hints of pre-relationship are so delicious. (This is a rare slash fic from blackmare.) Ch2&3 are also absolutely brilliant!! Great characterisation, pacing, and tension-building.
A Voice in Ramah (Welcome to Holland) by ignaz (8k) Cuddy POV on her pregnancy journey. Diverges from the show. Really well done. ignaz did this topic and Cuddy's character justice. I also particularly liked House in this one.
Singapore by thedeadparrot (8k) (2009) In which the boys go to a medical conference in Singapore, House has a few surprises up his sleeve, and Wilson figures some things out.
*A Helping Hand by bironic (9k) Wilson has an unusually rough day and House decides (somewhat despite himself) to help. Things go further than he planned. A believable foray into non-platonic territory, set in between 2.22 (Forever) and 2.24 (No Reason). What better way to take your mind off your patients than a good-ol handjob between friends? Chuck in an absolutely delicious fucked-up overtone characteristic of them and we're golden.
Rarepairs
Chase/House
***pretty doctor by spqr (5k) AU where Chase is a hooker. House becomes obsessed with him after he off-handedly gives the correct differential diagnosis. spqr is an excellent writer that I've followed across multiple fandoms, and this fic did not disappoint. Well-written, great chemistry, hilarious. I could read 100k of this.
***atonement in the locker room after hours by missaa (2k) robert chase makes two mistakes in one day Tags: Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms, degradation, God Complex, Catholic Guilt This is just as yummy as those tags make it sound. Someone needed to capitalise on the whole *waves hand vaguely* thing that Chase has going on and by god did this person rise to the occasion. Love the characterisation and the elegant prose, and the structure that flashes back and forth between two scenes. I'm insane!
Chase/Foreman Shoutout to ignaz who sold me on this pairing.
*Pretty Harsh (Confirmatory Testing Remix) by everybodylies (2k) Foreman might have flirted with Chase six months ago for like thirty seconds. Chase can't stop thinking about it.
***Two For The Road by ignaz (3k) For the first ever Foreman Fest, prompt 107 -- "after a break and enter gone wrong, Foreman and Chase are both sentenced to 300 hours of community service, which it looks like they're gonna spend picking up trash on the side of the road." Really solid writing (I mean it’s ignaz), believable characterisation and relationship building. I love them 💓💓💓 just overall a real pleasure to read. Also it's hilarious.
***Eric Foreman Doesn't Take It Up The Ass (But If He Did, It Might Happen Something Like This) by ignaz (6k)
Self-Defense, or The One Where Foreman Teaches Chase How to Throw a Punch by ignaz (1k)
Cameron/Foreman/Chase
Third Wheel Rolling by ignaz He's not jealous, but he's been the third wheel for so long that it's hard to tell the difference. Sexy + great characterisations.
Cuddy/Stacy
***Your Reflection and Mine by Starlingthefool (3k) Sweet, hot, well written.
Amber/Thirteen
***Hate (to the power of 13) by ijemanja (2k) (lj) Porny, with snappy writing and believable characterisations.
Hen Night by zulu (<1k) This is how breakups go. Amber's seen movies.
Release by zulu (1k) Wilson dies on the bus instead of Amber.
Chase/Wilson
Erase by bethfrish (<1k) Featuring a bar and crossdressing. Precanon. Second person, Wilson POV.
Patrick Bateman/Wilson
Just Like You, Only Worse by bethfrish (1k) Ok before you raise your eyebrows at the pairing, give it a chance. Bethfrish is an excellent writer. This fic is really a Wilson character study, and it's an interesting read. Second person POV Wilson, set in s1.
#house md#hilson#house x wilson#house fic rec#house md fic#house md fic rec#my rec list#please let me know fi there are any formatting issues or random chunks of text that shouldnt be there or whatever because tubmrl sucks#i spent way too much fucking time on these rec lists

Books of 2022
In 2022, I read fewer books overall (143, down from last year’s ridiculous 303) but I did manage to cut down on my romance novel reading---a respectable 52% instead of last year’s 78%. The consequence of this is that I did actually read more good books this year, books I could talk about with other people and inspired feelings and thoughts that rattled around my head afterwards. Plus some actual nonfiction!
Going through all of them, what I liked about them, why they made such an impression, would take a while---plus I’ve already talked about most of these in my books tag. So I’m just going to invite everyone to ask about anything that catches their eye!
BEST FICTION (IN THE ORDER I READ THEM) ** indicates a particular favorite
The House of Small Shadows, Adam Nevill
**The Cipher, Kathe Koja
Eartheater, Dolores Reyes
Hadriana in All My Dreams, René Depestre
**Tender is the Flesh, Agustina Bazterrica
You've Lost a Lot of Blood, Eric LaRocca
The Beautiful Ones, Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
War for the Oaks, Emma Bull
Girl A, Abigail Dean
This Might Hurt, Stephanie Wrobel
**Burning Girls and Other Stories, Veronica Schanoes
Eva Ibbotson’s A Countess Below Stairs, A Company of Swans, & Magic Flutes
Deerskin, Robin McKinley
BEST NONFICTION
An Iliad, Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare
**Capitalist Realism, Mark Fisher
Urban Folklore in the Paperwork Empire, Alan Dundes & Carl R. Pagter
**Fun Home, Alison Bechdel
**Men, Women & Chainsaws, Carol J. Clover
[romance novels and most disliked books under the cut---I did give these a bit of an explanation, because being asked about romance novels makes me itchy. We shall never speak of these again.]
ROMANCE NOVEL READING
Vivienne Lorret (How to Forget a Duke, Ten Kisses to Scandal, The Rogue to Ruin, When a Marquess Loves a Woman, How to Steal a Scoundrel's Hear) Admittedly, nothing particularly unique about these---however, they are more traditional romance and a pretty decent attempt at actual regency-style manners, so I enjoyed myself reading them.
Olivia Atwater (Half a Soul, Ten Thousand Stitches, Longshadow) I actually sincerely loved these! Supernatural historical romance from a solid writer. Plus, the series has angrier, more class-conscious sensibilities than all the romance novels I've read---and is less hypocritical about it too, since the characters are largely not nobility, and there's no marrying dukes involved.
Alice Coldwater (His Forsaken Bride, An Ill-Made Match, The Unlovely Bride, Wed By Proxy) So admittedly, I don’t recommend reading all four of these together---it becomes increasingly clear that Coldwater can only write one and a half heroines, and both of them are excessively weepy. Nevertheless, I took a total leap of faith on this (historical fantasy romance isn't typically my genre) and was rewarded by a lot of delightful pining, some court politics, and the 1.5 heroines she can write are fun to follow around.
C.L. Wilson (The Winter King, The Sea King) If last year was about reading every romance novel about dukes I could find, this year was about finding all the fantasy romance novels. (Shout out to Stephanie Garber who also helped feed this inexplicable urge!) Anyway, this series was fun, similar to the above in that it’s fake fantasy politics and some romance, and that’s a combination that works for me.
MOST DISLIKED BOOKS
Redshirts, John Scalzi I have never despised a book quite like this one! I still can't tell if it's the smirkingly obvious Star Trek meta of it all, or the hat on a hat that is the last chapter/coda 1. I did like coda 3, but only because it felt like the only quietly, emotionally sincere part of the whole stupid book.
High Times in the Low Parliament, Kelly Robinson Novellas must be tricky to write---I’ve read a fistful or so, and find them to be wildly variable in quality and effectiveness. That said....the author’s attempt to resolve entrenched political problems via dance made me roll my eyes so hard I strained a muscle. It ruined what might have otherwise been a fun time, since I did like the narrator's charmingly disaffected perspective
Always Be My Duchess, Amalie Howard Emotional honesty and vulnerability has no place in romance novels. I read historical romance specifically so people won’t talk about their feelings, and the fact that romancelandia keeps shoehorning therapy-speak into my regency may in fact be my villain origin story. However, even worse than that is this book’s use of “totally” and "patriarchy" in a completely ahistorical way, betraying a nauseating disinterest in the time period being written about. Worse than even that: the total fucking coward's move it is to write a Pretty Woman fic but then have the heroine be a virgin and not a sex worker at all. God knows we can't be interesting.
Death, Laura Thelassa This one is my own fault. I did think "hey isn't that the romance series with the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse? I read one of those a long time ago; I should give it another shot." (I promise, I regretted it instantly.) However, it is another excellent entry in the long list of cowardly books that refuse to actually lean into enemies to lovers as a trope. Also, if you have undying protagonists? they should kill each other more.

Today on Heron rambles about her interests.
So what am I talking about?
A puzzle hunt is a collection of puzzles where the goal of each puzzle is to get a word or phrase as an answer. The actual content of the puzzle can be anything, from normal stuff like crosswords or sudokus, to ridiculous stuff like IMO Papers, AO3 fics or a picture of a herring. Often no explicit instructions are given for how to get the answer, figuring them out is part of the puzzle itself (often through noticing patterns in what you're given or through recognition of common puzzle hunt components).
Here's an example (Recursion from the 2021 MIT Mystery Hunt):
There's not much information here to go on but we can presume that we need to fill in the blanks somehow. Although the number of phases matches the number of blank lines, there's no way to logically match them up one-to-one. We'll need to find something else.
After some quick searching (or music knowledge) we can find that all of the phrases at the top are song titles. From there we can other things like lyrics or the albums they're in, but still nothing fits. We'll have also found the artists to these songs.
Ain't That Peculiar is by Marvin Gaye
Like Flies on Sherbert is by Alex Chilton
Live Like You Were Dying is by Tim McGraw
Love and Mercy is by Brian Wilson
Peggy Sue is by Buddy Holly
When I Sing About You is by Clint Eastwood
Woman in Love is by Barbra Streisand
While the artists can't be matched up to the blanks, we may notice something:
The title being "Recursion" suggests repeating an action
Barbra Streisand is also a song by Duck Sauce
Duck Sauce fits in one of the blanks
It turns out that each artist of the listed songs is also the name of another song and that the artists of those songs fit in the blanks. Finding the artists to these songs gets us this:
Ain't That Peculiar / Marvin Gaye / Charlie Puth
Like Flies on Sherbert / Alex Chilton / The Replacements
Live Like You Were Dying / Tim McGraw / Taylor Swift
Love and Mercy / Brian Wilson / Barenaked Ladies
Peggy Sue / Buddy Holly / Weezer
When I Sing About You / Clint Eastwood / Gorillaz
Woman in Love / Barbra Streisand / Duck Sauce
And the final artists fit in the blanks like so:
CHARLIE [P]UTH
B[A]RENAKED LADIES
GOR[I]LLAZ
DUCK [S]AUCE
THE REP[L]ACEMENTS
W[E]EZER
TA[Y]LOR SWIFT
Taking the boxed letters gets us the answer of "PAISLEY"
That's the basic outline of how a puzzle hunt puzzle works, but the contents of a puzzle can be extremely varied. I haven't even talked about meta puzzles (I may talk about that in a follow up if people are interested). These hunts are full of creativity and interesting surprises and I hope that I have demonstrated at least some of that in this post.
If you want another puzzle to try out, I think tumblr will enjoy this one.

aight so we’ve seen a bit of darryl now and I wanna talk about it
working off of the points in this post
first thing’s first can we talk about the fact that darryl and his dad died in the exact same way? frank and darryl both fell off of ladders,,, in no universe is that a coincidence. while I don’t necessarily know if there’s another layer to this, it is cool to see matt bringing around how the wilson family just loops through the same moments in their lives.
seeing grant and darryl interact was heartbreaking too because he died traumatically and they heard about it secondhand (same as frank’s death) so when they reunited it was with a grant who fully believed he’d never see his dad again and darryl trusting so much in his child’s goodness that he knew they would reunite.
all of that being said, I really hope they delve into the strain between linc and grant next episode because it was briefly touched and excused “as a phase” but there’s so much potential for healing there. however, I’m grateful that they kept the truly emotional stuff out of this episode because it will forever and always be known as “the piss episode” in my mind and I really don’t want to cite it in future meta :’)
#dndads#dungeons and daddies#darryl wilson#grant wilson#linc *boss kicks piss man* li-wilson#idk why I immediately jumped to glenn as the first dad they’d get#darryl makes sense seeing as he was right there#I maintain that henry will be last though bc they’ll probably hop through a piss hole to hell for the close/stampler arcs#I hate that piss holes is a thing to be considered#this show fucking sucks I love it

'Deadpool' (feat. Jeff Johnson and Kev Smith of Suns and Shadows)
Deadpool. That sounds like a f**king franchise. Right? After the character's big-screen debut (kinda) in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it sure didn't seem that way. Ryan Reynolds' take on Marvel Comics' fourth wall-breaking quasi-superhero Wade Wilson aka Deadpool seemed like it had its one shot. Then some leaked footage later, the Merc with the Mouth got a new life.
Following our X-Men mega-series from 2023, we return to the world of Marvel's mutants with a mega-series all about what will soon be the Deadpool trilogy. Of course, we'll kick it off this episode with the film that started it all, from first-time director Tim Miller. Listen as Jeff Johnson and Kev Smith of Suns and Shadows join us to touch all over 2016's Deadpool.
We'll discuss why the film pushed the boundaries of the superhero genre, how its meta-commentary has aged, and why it is perhaps exactly what Marvel and the X-Men films needed. We'll also chat in-depth about Reynolds, who championed the project and has leveraged the success of Deadpool to propel his career in Hollywood to new heights.
Beneath its snark and violence, there’s also real heart in Deadpool. Wade’s romance with Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) adds emotional depth. And in this episode, we'll uncover that Deadpool is, really and truly, a love story. So whether you’re a die-hard Marvel fan or recently caught up with Deadpool ahead of the upcoming release of the third film, cue the music and enjoy!
Check out this episode!

Wade & Wolvie: But No Taylor Swift
Get ready, Marvel fans! The Merc with a Mouth is teaming up with the clawed mutant in the highly anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine." And no, Swifties, Taylor Swift isn't making an appearance, despite all the buzz. Let’s dive into what we can expect from this superhero extravaganza, set to hit theaters on July 26. Sorry to burst your bubble, Swifties. Despite the internet rumors, Taylor Swift will not be gracing the screen in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Entertainment Weekly confirmed that the pop sensation, known for hits like folklore and The Tortured Poets Department, won’t be part of this Marvel flick. This comes after much speculation that she might portray the comic book character Dazzler. The rumors peaked when Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman attended a Kansas City Chiefs game with the film’s director, Shawn Levy, and Taylor Swift. The connection was purely coincidental as Swift was there to support her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The Buzz Around Deadpool & Wolverine Despite no Taylor Swift, "Deadpool & Wolverine" promises to deliver plenty of excitement. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are set to share the screen, bringing Deadpool and Wolverine together for the first time since 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This pairing alone is enough to get fans buzzing. Reynolds, known for his witty and irreverent take on Deadpool, will once again don the red suit. Meanwhile, Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine, a role he seemingly hung up after Logan. Returning from previous Deadpool films are fan favorites such as Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna), and Colossus (Stefan Kapičić),. This ensemble cast guarantees that the film will have the same blend of humor, action, and heart that fans have come to love. A History of Deadpool The Deadpool franchise has been a game-changer for superhero movies. The first film, released in 2016, broke new ground with its R-rated humor and meta-commentary. Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, was a hit. The film’s success led to a sequel in 2018, which further expanded the universe with new characters and bigger stakes. Both films were praised for their originality and willingness to push boundaries. Now, with "Deadpool & Wolverine," the franchise is poised to reach new heights. Director Shawn Levy, who has a history of working with Ryan Reynolds, promises a film packed with surprises. While Levy and Reynolds have remained tight-lipped about the specifics, they’ve hinted at unexpected cameos and plot twists. "Surprises are the essence of Deadpool," Reynolds said, keeping fans on their toes. Levy has also expressed his excitement about bringing these two iconic characters together, ensuring that the film will blend the best elements of both Deadpool’s humor and Wolverine’s intensity. Plot Details: What We Know The plot of "Deadpool & Wolverine" remains mostly under wraps. However, fans can expect the same off-the-wall humor and action-packed sequences that made the previous films a hit. The chemistry between Reynolds and Jackman is sure to be a highlight, as both actors have a knack for blending action with comedy. The film is set to explore new dynamics between Deadpool and Wolverine, promising a fresh take on their relationship. Release Date and Final Thoughts "Deadpool & Wolverine" is set to hit theaters on July 26. Mark your calendars and prepare for a wild ride. Even without Taylor Swift, the film promises to be a blockbuster. With a star-studded cast, a beloved director, and the return of two iconic characters, this is one movie you won’t want to miss. Get ready for laughs, action, and a whole lot of surprises. So, there you have it. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year. While Taylor Swift might not be joining the Marvel universe just yet, there’s plenty to be excited about. From the return of beloved characters to the dynamic pairing of Reynolds and Jackman, this film is set to deliver on all fronts. Keep an eye out for more updates as we get closer to the release date. It's season 6 but "good drama" has been replaced with main character plots that are either afterthoughts, illogical and/or recycled.
#5 of What’s missing from season 6.
[Completing 2022 drafts before 2023]
There are several things that have been missing from 9-1-1 during season 6 including (1) Maddie’s absence from firefam gatherings, (2) Halloween and Christmas episodes, (3) believable 9-1-1 calls and (4) exciting emergencies. In addition to those missing elements, the “good drama” plots that were previously included in main characters’ storylines have now been replaced with one of the following; (1) afterthought plots that were included because someone finally remembered a character hadn’t had a storyline in several seasons, (2) illogical plots that are in direct conflict with a main character’s previous actions and/or (3) recycled plots even though they were resolved during seasons 2, 3, 4 or 5. While it’s true that 9-1-1 is a procedural drama, the drama that’s being presented doesn’t have to be like the drama included in soap operas, telenovelas and/or reality TV shows. Has 9-1-1 run out of ideas for their main characters’ storylines and the plots associated with them? If so, then it is definitely plausible because it has happened in the past with other network TV shows once they reached a certain "seasonal age". But 9-1-1 shouldn't be struggling to come up with “good drama” for their main characters’ storylines this early, especially since they’re in the middle of their 6th season. Bobby and Chimney haven’t had individual storylines over the past four seasons and the ones they were finally given at the end of 6A appear to be an afterthought for Bobby and illogical for Chimney. The plots in Buck’s, Eddie’s and Hen’s storylines are being recycled from previous seasons which makes it seem like the show is completely unfamiliar with the characters they have created. Leading into 6B, all of the plots in each of their storylines either fall into the afterthought, illogical and/or recycled plot categories.
Afterthought
Athena didn’t have a dedicated storyline that led into 6B even though the focus of 6x3 “The Devil You Know” finally resolved one of her storylines from 2x7 “Haunted”. After 6x9 “Red Flag” ended, it appears her character will be focused on helping Bobby with whatever afterthought plots his storyline will include for the second half of the season.
Bobby's AA sponsor Wendell was introduced out of thin air and it gave the audience whiplash because Bobby had never mentioned him before 6x9. There were plenty of chances for Wendell to be introduced in previous episodes but he wasn’t. He could have been mentioned in 2x6 “Dosed” after Bobby and the rest of the 118 (except for Chimney) ate those hallucinogen laced brownies. Or Wendell could have been included in 4x13 “Suspicion” while Bobby was actually at one of his AA meetings when Athena followed him there only to find out he was there to help Rachel Hawkerson, the drunk driver who caused the pile up accident on the freeway in 4x9 “Blindsided”. Or maybe Wendell should have been introduced in 5x18 “Starting Over” after Eddie left Bobby’s house but right before Bobby poured that bottle of alcohol that he bought and had every intention of drinking down the drain. Bobby could have placed a call to Wendell to let him know how much he was struggling with guilt after Jonah captured Hen and Chimney especially since HE HAD ALREADY PURCHASED A BOTTLE OF ALCOHOL TO DRINK IN PRIVATE WHILE ATHENA WAS AT WORK. A 10 second call could have happened between Bobby and Wendell in 5x18, even if Wendell hadn’t been shown ONSCREEN so that the character could be introduced. The audience heard Wendell’s voicemail in 6x9 which proves a quick call in 5x18 would have only taken a few seconds and it could have replaced some of the time Bobby spent just standing in the kitchen staring into oblivion. This would have helped the audience understand how important Wendell was in Bobby’s life. All of those missed opportunities to introduce Wendell in previous episodes, makes it seem like Bobby’s current storyline for 6B is an afterthought. Also, why didn't Bobby turn the information he learned about Wendell's death and that couple he suspects killed him over to the police? Him being married to a police sergeant doesn't automatically give him the skill set needed to be able to investigate a crime. He’s the captain of the 118 which means he’s not a detective or a police officer. Also if it’s true that May is going to help Bobby and Athena with the investigation, then the direction Bobby’s plots and storylines will take in 6B and future seasons is unclear. Does he want to be a cop or remain a fire captain? That’s another reason why his storyline and the plots included in it for 6B, appear to be afterthoughts.
Illogical
Chimney was shown to believe in jinxes in 4x6 “Jinx” and curses in 6x7 “Cursed” but in 6x9 he willingly researched the history associated with a “Murder House” and that was after Josh had explained the phantom calls he took were coming from inside of that house.
Chimney was onsite to medically assist one of the police officers after they had been injured during the welfare check but even though the house had been abandoned, Chimney walked through it and he didn’t appear to be phased by the spookiness of it.
Therefore his belief in both jinxes and curses is a direct conflict to his sudden acceptance of not only investigating an abandoned house that had a suspicious history but also PURCHASING it. For someone who readily believes in curses and jinxes, the plot within his storyline didn’t make any NARRATIVE sense at all. Was the audience supposed to forget that he still believes mentioning the “Q” word inside of the firehouse will cause the 118 to have a bad shift along with the fact that he was adamant about not touching Felisa’s bracelet in 6x7 “Cursed” since he believes curses can spread? This is one of the most illogical plots that’s been used on this show and it has blatantly disregarded Chimney’s main character traits of being a truther who believes in curses and jinxes while he also wants to protect his family from danger. The way things played out in 6x9 made it seem like Chimney never believed in jinxes or curses even though the audience had just been reminded that he still does two episodes before in 6x7. His storyline is not only illogical, it also seems like it was an afterthought too just like Bobby’s. Chimney needs his own storylines but they also should make NARRATIVE sense.
Maddie didn’t end 6A with a dedicated storyline but it would have made more NARRATIVE sense for her to have been the one who took the calls about the “Murder House” instead of Josh. She could have done the research to prove that it wasn’t an actual “Murder House” so that she could have convinced Chimney to go see it. That would have allowed them the opportunity to have some back and forth since he clearly still believes in jinxes and curses. Then once he learned that no murders actually took place there, they could have agreed to buy it together. Both of them completed a house hunt OFFSCREEN in 6x8 “9-1-1 What’s Your Fantasy?” so her being the one to research a house that had an interesting history wouldn’t have been farfetched.
Recycled
Hen’s storyline that started in 6x9 and will continue into 6B with Karen and Denny was resolved in 2x5 “Awful People”; therefore it doesn’t make any NARRATIVE sense for it to resurface like it is a brand-new storyline for her in season 6. Karen and Hen met with Nathaniel, Denny’s biological father, at the end of 2x5 and he said, “I could tell Denny has a good life here. And I don’t want to harm that in any way. You’re his parents. Tell me what’s best for him and I’ll follow your lead”.
When Denny asked about his biological parents (for the second time because he asked about them in season 4 the day before Nia was preparing to leave) all Hen and Karen needed to do was say they had already met with him and if he wanted to meet Nathaniel, they would arrange it. Denny going to search for his bio dad on his own was nonsensical. This is a recycled storyline that shouldn’t have resurfaced especially since Nathaniel was ok with letting Hen and Karen take the lead. It appears the show might be reusing this storyline for Buck’s RIDICULOUS sperm donor storyline but since it’s NOT BEING USED TO HELP BUCK UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE “DONOR, NOT DAD” THING, how is it going to help anyone in 6B? Hen and Karen are hurting and Denny went off by himself on his bike to some man’s house.
Since Nathaniel’s face wasn’t shown, it’s likely he might have gone to the wrong person’s house. Hen’s next storyline didn’t have to be like this so it’s unclear where it will end up in 6B now that she dropped out of medical school.
Eddie’s plots for his 6B storyline will be recycled too if the plans the showrunner has for his character are executed. Excerpts from one of the showrunner’s many post-mortem interviews that was posted on most social media platforms after 6x9, includes one of her quotes regarding Eddie and it stated that Eddie would be “dipping his toe back into the dating pool”. If it’s true and he will start dating again then there’s no NARRATIVE reason why a storyline that was resolved in 5x3 “Desperate Measures” has to resurface. Eddie already tried dating again in 4x6 “Jinx” and even though she was supposed to have represented everything Eddie “should” have wanted in a relationship; it didn’t work because Eddie’s heart wasn’t in it. Did the showrunner FORGET the way Eddie reacted the last time he dated?
The audience hasn’t forgotten because his reaction to dating again was so visceral that he had a FULL-BLOWN PANIC ATTACK at the mere thought of spending his life with her. Also his ex-girlfriend closed the door after he broke up with her so why is him dating again even a possibility especially since EDDIE ALREADY GAVE HIS HEART TO BUCK?
Eddie’s heart wants Buck and realization set in for him in 4x13 “Suspicion” while he was talking to Carla and she told him to follow his heart and not Christopher’s.
He confirmed Buck is who his heart wants right after he got shot and he reached for him while they were laying in the middle of the street during one of their many silent conversations. Eddie doesn't want to date around ESPECIALLY SINCE HE WROTE BUCK INTO HIS WILL which solidified his decision to make a life and build his forever with him almost 3 years ago. At this point, Eddie dating anyone other than Buck doesn't make any NARRATIVE sense. Instead of forcing him to date again, he should be shown talking to Frank, his therapist, about the things he wants now that he’s healing but that would be too logical and make too much sense, so the showrunner is avoiding it.
Buck’s storylines and the plots associated with them are all over the place because his search for happiness is another recycled plot for cheap drama that’s being used to regress him. His drama is not even "good drama" because he’s been searching for happiness since season 2 after his first girlfriend abandoned him.
Then he asked his parents to love him anyway in season 4 and now he’s still searching for happiness in season 6.
His search for happiness has been stunted once again because someone decided it would be a good idea to have Buck make more mistakes and inserted this sperm donor plot that hardly anyone likes. It’s RIDICULOUS because all logic associated with the actual process was removed from the plot. The show cheapened the sperm donation process and reduced it to something that was laughed at. They also ignored the screening process and protocols that are in place to eliminate donations that could pose a risk to an unborn child. What about Buck’s medical history? What about Buck not doing the deed for 4 weeks but actual tests from medical doctors who specialize in IVF state “infrequent ejaculation increases the quantity of dead sperm”? Why didn’t Hen say more than she did when she asked him if he could walk away especially since she was in MEDICAL SCHOOL? How did the process work so fast when in real life it takes months for IVF to work? What about him NOT wanting to make the same mistakes, which he keeps doing over and over again anyway without learning anything in the process? Last season he cheated on his girlfriend which didn't make any sense either since he waited months for his first girlfriend to return in season 2 only to ask Bobby when he got to be happy. Buck's been searching for happiness for years and he still hasn't figured it out yet even after he talked with Lev at the Happiness Convention in 6x2 “Crash and Learn”. In addition to his current storyline, Buck’s being regressed to repeat the same mistakes because his found family is not being allowed to be there for him when he needs them. The same thing that happened in 4x14 “Survivors” with Buck being separated from the firefam when he really needed them after Eddie was shot and it’s being done AGAIN for the umpteenth time. He was in the process of making a life changing decision about if he should be a sperm donor but the showrunner separated him from Eddie, Maddie, Bobby and Chimney so that he couldn’t be talked out of it. Buck has demonstrated that he can grow in the past so it’s unclear why his storylines have him going in circles with no progress. His storylines are recycled the most and the audience has grown tired of him regressing.
Some of the main characters are being written in a way that they’ve become unrecognizable due to the lack of growth they are exhibiting. Plots that were previously resolved are now being presented as new and fresh which just makes everything seem off or like something is missing. At the end of season 5, all the mains were supposed to be “Starting Over” when 5x18 ended; therefore they should have learned from their mistakes and been preparing to do something different but that didn’t happen in 6A. Did the showrunner forget the mains were supposed to be starting over? It certainly seems like she did since they aren’t being allowed to start over and instead, they are repeating the same mistakes they made or that were resolved during seasons 2-5.
It seriously seems like the show has completely run out of ideas with regards to plots for the main cast because they’re currently using a “copy and paste” method by reusing storylines and plots from previous seasons. It appears they’re choosing to ignore episode reactions from the audience and they're depending on the audience they spent years building to just keep watching. But based on audience comments that were posted after 6A ended, a lot of viewers posted they will use the hiatus to decide if they will return to watch 6B. The same thing happened during season 5 which caused the show to lose millions of viewers. Comments from the audience have been mostly NEGATIVE with regards to 6A so it will be interesting to see how the ratings will end up after the show returns in March 2023. Will things get better or worse for main characters’ plots in 6B? It’s unfortunate but the audience will have to wait and see since the promo for 6x10 “In a Flash” didn’t provide enough details to determine if the second half of season 6 will continue to have mostly filler episodes.
