The whole Justin Baldoni, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Swift debacle is getting me closer to wanting to fully disassociate from literally everything Hollywood.

I didn't like Hollywood, but as a Taylor Swift fan and gaylor, I did keep up with some pop culture but I quit listening to her music a few days ago. I think I'm losing interest in all that stuff.

There are only a few smaller artists who I think are doing their best to keep good values.

But I now feel silly idolizing billionaire women who stay in echo chambers and have narcissistic tendencies.

I also miss when actors were just actors and singers just singers.I don't want to hear about your politics, I want to hear you sing or act in great stories.

Things are extremely politicised to the point that it isn't fun anymore and feels forced. If it isn't the star, it's the cult-like "fans" that demand you to think and talk a certain way.

Now I want to say this, I don't think it's bad to like a movie star or singer. No hate to TS fans either. I literally went to the era's tour last year. I get it! If you get something out of it, I'm happy for you.

I just think I'm slowly growing out of all of that.

Who knows, maybe I'll come crawling back. But for now I think I should think a lot more about the media I'm consuming.

Another thing I really love about ‘Wynonna Earp’ is that every main or season regular character had a turn at being possessed by either a demon or a witch.

Waverly got Gooverly when she was possessed by the tentacle demon, Mictian. I’m not sure if Dark Angel Waverly is a possession or just Waverly not being in sync with her dark side. I’ll put them here though.

Wynonna got Goononna when Gooverly kissed her and Mictian transferred itself into her body instead.

Nicole got Maeve when her and Doc went to investigate about and find Juan Carlo’s book.

Jeremy got Maeve when she transferred herself into Jeremy’s body when he came to help them out.

Doc got the Clanton heir when Cleo Clanton did her magic-marking voodoo shit on him at the Clantons.

Dolls got Mictian when he was trying to help Wynonna defeat the The Barber revenant way back in Season 1.

Robin got People Tree’d possessed when he ate that disgusting tree sprout thing after getting kidnapped.

All the main or season regular actors got their time to show off their acting chops through possession. Real possession. Not what they do with soulless vampires in ‘BtVS/AtS’ which they call possession but it isn’t.

Emily Andras did not leave anyone out. I love that. It really isn’t a supernatural show without possession. Even Xena did possession even though it’s not supernatural. Only fantasy. But Xena did everything.

BORN  IN  ON  A  HOT  SUMMER  DAY  all  justin  kang  has  ever  known  is  cars.  how  to  fix  them,  how  to  mod  them,  how  to  drive  them,  and  how  to  race  them.  since  he  could  walk  he's  either  been  underneath  a  car  or  popping  open  a  hood  while  on  his  mother's  hip.

his  mom  was  always  his  favorite  person.  she  was  the  mechanic  of  the  family,  a  korean  immigrant  who  came  to  the  states  at  just  nineteen  by  herself  to  find  a  better  life  for  herself,  which  she'd  proudly  tell  you  she  did.  minji,  who  would  take  on  the  nickname  minnie  which  she'd  later  legally  get  it  changed  to,  would  quickly  find  herself  in  the  racing  scene  and  quickly  become  on  of  the  most  sought  after  mechanics  and  car  modders  in  the  scene.

she'd  meet  his  father  while  at  a  race  and  the  pair  would  quickly  fall  in  love.  they'd  have  two  sons  together  with  justin  being  the  eldest.

minnie  would  never  admit  it  out  loud  but  justin  was  clearly  her  favorite.  they'd  spend  the  most  time  together  out  of  anyone  in  their  little  family.  of  course,  she  loved  her  other  son  too,  but  justin  was  special  to  her.  he  still  doesn't  know  why.

the  kang  family  would  open  a  mechanic  shop  when  justin  was  ten  years  old.  he'd  work  there  (which  was  totally  legal  and  not  at  all  breaking  child  labor  laws)  first  with  small  tasks  like  tire  changes  with  his  dad  helping  before  doing  full  on  body  mods  or  repairs  by  the  time  he  was  a  teenager.

justin  loved  working  at  the  shop.  it's  all  he  ever  wanted  to  do,  truthfully.  he  never  saw  himself  going  to  college  or  sitting  in  an  office  for  8  hours  a  day.  he  wanted  to  work  on  cars  and  watch  them  whirl  past  the  finish  line.

everything  was  perfect  until  it  wasn't.

⋆✴︎˚｡⋆   THE   WRECKAGE

tw:  parental  death,  familial  estrangement,  and  brief  cancer  mention

justin  was  eighteen  when  his  mom  go  sick.  cancer.  she  never  told  him  what  kind,  but  he  knew  it  wasn't  good  when  she  stopped  going  to  the  shop.

she'd  pass  away  when  he  was  twenty  in  a  hospital  bed.

the  funeral  happened  three  days  later.  it  was  the  worst  day  of  justin's  life.  he  lost  his  best  friend,  his  mentor,  and  mother  all  in  a  single  body  that  he  helped  carry  to  the  hole  in  the  earth  where  she'd  rest  forever.  it  was  utterly  devastating.

though  he  might  look  it,  justin  wasn't  stupid.  he  knew  things  were  going  to  change,  but  he  never  saw  them  changing  the  way  they  did.  his  mother's  death  was  an  eye-opener  for  him.  she  was  the  glue  that  kept  the  kang  men  from  tearing  each  other's  heads  off.

at  first,  it  was  stupid  things  like  justin's  father  getting  tiffed  he  left  the  bathroom  light  on  or  his  brother  calling  him  a  dumbass  for  not  filing  the  invoices  correctly.  whatever,  sure.  but  over  time,  the  fights  got  louder,  more  intense,  nastier,  and  it  felt  like  every  day  there  was  something  new  for  the  slowly  decaying  family  to  fight  over.

typically,  it  was  always  2  vs.  1  in  these  fights  with  the  rare  occasion  of  justin's  brother  taking  his  side,  but  justin  was  always  the  odd  man  out.

shit  only  really  hit  the  fan  after  justin's  father  sold  their  mother's  shop  without  confronting  either  of  the  boys.  this,  rightfully,  devastated  justin  and  caused  even  further  disputes  within  the  household.  it  seemed  like  there  wasn't  a  day  that  went  by  where  the  three  of  them  weren't  fighting  or  arguing  to  some  capacity.

their  arguments  didn't  stop  just  at  their  house,  they'd  leak  into  when  they  were  with  their  crew  as  well.  justin's  father  was  an  original  member  of  the  rodani  prowlers,  essentially  nepobabying  justin  and  his  brother  into  the  crew  as  well.

justin  never  really  clicked  with  the  prowlers,  but  it's  honestly  not  like  he  tried  too.  he  thought  they  were  "dweebs  with  sticks  up  their  asses"  (direct  quote)  but  stayed  with  them  to  maybe,  hopefully,  impress  his  father.

that  never  ended  up  happening  and  justin  would  leave  the  prowlers  alongside  the  many  others  to  form  the  nariza  bois.  this  would  effectively  sever  any  chance  that  the  already  torn  apart  family  had  of  ever  reconciling  as  they  deem  justin,  now  known  as  "patches"  for  his  many  tattoos,  a  traitor.

justin  carries  this  on  his  shoulders,  feeling  the  weight  every  time  he  passes  the  doughnut  shop  that  used  to  be  his  mom's  pride  and  joy  car  shop.

⋆✴︎˚｡⋆   MIAMI  BABY  !

LISTEN,  JUSTIN  SWEARS  HE'S  A  GOOD  GUY.  he  just  likes  to  win,  he  likes  for  his  racers  to  win,  it  gives  him  a  rush  to  see  a  car  he  modded  to  hell  and  back  whizzing  past  the  finish  line  and  leaving  their  competitors  in  the  dust.  it's  like  a  drug  he  can't  get  enough  of.

sometimes,  he  plays  dirty.  it's  not  like  he  does  anything  too  egregious  to  his  competitors  cars.  the  worst  he's  done  is  poor  beer  in  someone's  gas  tank  which,  sure,  is  bad,  but  could  be  worse!  that's  at  least  what  he  tells  himself.

justin  is  extremely  dedicated  to  the  nariza  boys  and  treats  all  of  them  like  family  more  so  than  his  actual  blood.

gets  a  new  tattoo  with  every  other  paycheck.  literally  covered  in  them  from  head  to  toe,  like,  truly  borders  on  addiction  at  this  point.  spends  more  time  at  so true tattoo  on  the  weekends  than  he  should.

when  did  your  first  realize  you  had  a  passion  for  cars  /  racing?

"so,  my  mom  was  actually  a  mechanic  for  my  dad  so  cars,  racing,  all  that  shit  has  been  my  life  since  forever,  but  it  wasn't  really  my  passion  until  mom  passed  and  i  was...twenty?  yeah,  i  was  twenty  when  she  passed.  she  owned  her  own  shop  and  she  was  so  proud  of  that  place,  man.  i  called  it  her  first  born,  like,  she  treated  this  place  better  than  me  her  actual  first  born.  [...]  but  dad  ended  up  selling  it  and  i  was  just...devastated.  i  felt  like  i  had  lost  a  part  of  me  and  a  major  part  of  her.  it  really  was  this,  like,  wake  up  call  almost?  i  felt  like  i  had  taken  cars  and  racing  for  granted  because,  i  don't  know,  it  was  always  there  until  it  wasn't  [...]  so,  yeah,  i  was  nineteen  when  i  started  taking  it  more  seriously.  damn,  fifteen  years  ago.  crazy."

lowkey  selfish  as  hell,  like,  sure,  he  loves  the  nariza  boys  through  and  through  but  will  leave  you  in  the  dust  if  he  sees  police  lights  in  the  distance.  i  call  him  a  nice  guy,  but,  arguably,  he  kinda  sucks  lmao

how  do  you  feel  about  the  establishment  of  the  nariza  bois,  particularly  in  relation  to  their  split  from  the  rodani  prowlers?

loves  making  cds  for  his  friends  and  partners.  he'll  never  admit  it  but  he  loves  drawing  on  the  cds,  like,  that's  his  favorite  part  of  the  whole  process  and  decorating  the  cd  case.  he's  a  very  creative  person  but  keeps  it  locked  behind  this  faux  "cool  guy"  persona  he's  put  on.

Rules: talk about the origins of the names and personalities (and maybe even the design?) of a couple of your OCs!

From The Blood Cleaners

Justin

When I got the idea for The Blood Cleaners back in 2006, I knew early on that I wanted a male protagonist. He was largely inspired by Jonas of Lois Lowry’s The Giver and Equality 7-2521 of Ayn Rand’s Anthem. Like them, he would be determined to stand up to the status quo to choose his own life. I imagined he would be determined for justice, both justice for himself and justice for the people around him, hence the name Justin fitted him perfectly. It was even more fitting when I later met a new friend named Justen who reminded me a lot of my own Justin with his determination to defend liberty and live his life with purpose. 

It took a long time to come up with Justin’s appearance and age. Originally I just imagined a dark-haired boy. As I developed the dystopian world of Corpa - a completely self-sufficient city - I knew I needed a place where it would be realistic to have quarries and mines. I picked Arizona as a location (though I did take some liberty to craft a fictional location). I then felt it would make sense for most of the population to be of Hispanic descent and have brown skin. Latin-American culture matters a lot to me since I studied Spanish for years, love the culture, have many friends of Hispanic heritage, and have nieces and nephews with Latino ancestry, too. I thought it would make sense for the nuclear war apocalypse to create a bottleneck in the population, hence the survivors would mostly be people of color and so their descendants also would be. Ultimately, I decided to have Chapter 1 begin with Justin at age 8 when he makes the two key discoveries that serve as the inciting incidents of the two main plotlines, and then the rest of the story would be about Justin at age sixteen. The age made sense since sixteen makes more sense to begin an occupation rather than twelve, and because the content and subject material of the book should be reserved for readers sixteen and up (age of the character often represents the ideal age of the reader). 

So that’s how I made sixteen year old brown skinned, black haired Justin who is determined to fight for his freedom.

Joselyn

Originally I thought Justin’s only love interest would be Clarice (I’ll tell her story in a future post). Clarice is one of the children of the Fists - the government and ruling class of Corpa - who lives in the Steel Castle. Justin would meet Clarice after earning the privilege to work in the Steel. The problem was that she would be absent for much of the story. For Justin to get to work in the Steel, he would have to first go through the training, the torturous transformation, work as a blood cleaner for a while, and slowly discover his telekinetic powers. This would be a lot without a love interest. When I started the revival process for The Blood Cleaners last year, I put behind a lot of years of regret for not writing. Not knowing how many books I would get to write for the rest of my life, I wanted to cover what I would regret not doing. For a long time, I wanted to have a story where two characters bump into each other after running around a corner. I wanted it to be a type of “meet cute”. I gradually came up with the idea of having Justin at age eight unwittingly bump into his  future love interest when they were chased by two separate groups of people. This allowed for Chapter 1 to start with the inciting incidents for two of the major plotlines. First inciting incident was when Justin discovered the secret note. Second inciting incident was him running into Joselyn, beginning their romance plotline. I named Joselyn after Jocelyn of the film A Knight’s Tale. I used S instead of C to make them different.

I wanted to make Joselyn and Justin be parallels and opposites. Unlike him, she lives on the surface, not underground. Like him, she’s one of the common people as she lives on a farm. I did this partly for world development, since I wanted to show how the farms played a part in the self-sufficient city. I also made her be a Spanish speaker, since Corpa has a good deal of English and Spanish speakers. I describe Justin and Joselyn having similar features with brown skin and black hair, though they are not related (thank heavens!). They have a familiar ancestry, as Justin’s late father was also a commoner on the surface. Joselyn’s farmgirl characteristics might have had some influence from the love interest in Anthem, Liberty 5-3000. I make it clear that Joselyn is a capable girl, not a vulnerable damsel in distress. She has similar beliefs as Justin, though she’s more outspoken, no concern for how speaking her mind could threaten her life. She’s good at taking charge, though she begins with self-esteem struggles. I don’t like the way that the media has a tendency to either portray a smart female character who needs to deal with the dumb guy getting in her way or to portray a dumb female who needs a smart guy to rescue her. I defied the tropes by having Justin be a constant support for Joselyn, helping her get out of a rut, not in a way that shows he’s capable and she’s incapable, but that they are both capable and need support from each other.  

I knew from the beginning that this meant there would be a love triangle because I did not want to cut Clarice - she plays a vital role in the story. I like having the love triangle be different from the usual love triangle tropes. I’ve observed that most love triangles are a girl choosing between two guys. When a love triangle is between a guy and two girls, the girls will often be nasty and the guy will be a jerk. I wanted my love triangle to be more innocent, in which both of the girls are worthy of and need to be loved. Justin never meant harm, as it happened because he didn’t want to hurt either Joselyn or Clarice and he genuinely fell in love with both of them. I won’t give away too much, but can say Justin will regret the heartbreak when it happens. As with any love triangle, a choice must be made, but I won’t give that away.

A queer as folk season 3 what-if I like to imagine is what if the season hasn’t started with Justin off with Ethan (just ignore the S2 implications for a second) and Brian is still working for Stockwell.

I think Brian would have still done it, because of his pre-series priorities that he’s battling the whole show, of getting the hell out of Pittsburg, being financially successful, and crafting top-tier campaigns.

He would just be fighting with Justin about it, who I think in this version of Ethan-less events would have not only his personal political beliefs as anti-Stockwell but also his PIFA friends would be appalled by the whole situation (not to mention Daphne!) so he’d also have some discomfort and embarrassment about his two worlds clashing. (Ironically, I see him repeatedly being a bit hands off when “the family” is haranguing Brian for his choices, so I think his in-group peer pressure would be a new and disquieting experience for him.)

To be clear, Justin very obviously accepts Brian, with just momentary and plot-needed lapses of trust. The way he handled this situation in canon S3 was great. This "what-if" is very focused on this conflict not as Justin wanting Brian to change, but as a means for Justin to explore what he really thinks about himself.

And this conflict would be a wonderful place to highlight Britin's class and political divide - Justin grew up wealthy and is benefitting now from his wealthy boyfriend, his liberal beliefs are somewhat protected. Meanwhile, Brian has this innate competitive drive from his own upbringing that lends itself to an Ayn Rand sort of philosophy, which is also at conflict with how he wants to live his personal life.

Them learning from each other that they are both holding convictions that don’t really account for the nuanced life they lead and that of their friends, would have been a really cool relationship conflict whilst also pushing the maturation of their individual characters.

And, it gets at the heart of their eternal issue: two people who are growing up throughout the series figuring out what they want out of life and believe.

Like the Ethan plot DID address “what do you want/how do you see yourself” but I like this thought experiment since it gets to their individual core characteristics instead of purely relationship philosophies, and then puts those core characteristics into a relationship conflict so we can have both!

Plus! This also leads into my dream S5 where instead of Justin wanting babies at 22 years old he's having to process the incessant artistic disappointments he faced throughout the show, and struggled with the universal crisis of do I have to sellout to be an adult or can I realistically pursue my dreams.
