I've been reading up on the laws that are on the ballot in my state and I realized that every single one starts with âBe it enacted by the people and by their authorityâ which is, apparently, a very common phrase in legal documents so I donât know what it says about me that my first reaction to learning this was âAww! Thatâs adorable!â

Amanita Muscaria vs. Delta 8 THC Gummies: Which is Right for You?
In recent years, the rise of alternative health and wellness products has led many to explore options beyond traditional pharmaceuticals. Among these alternatives, mushroom gummies and Delta 8 THC gummies have gained significant popularity. This article dives into the world of Amanita Muscaria gummies and Delta 8 THC gummies, comparing their effects, legality, and safety to help you decide which might be right for your lifestyle and needs.
Understanding the Basics: What Are Amanita Muscaria and Delta 8 THC?
Amanita Muscaria gummies, often referred to as Mushroom Gummies, are made from the extract of the Amanita Muscaria mushroom. This mushroom is famous for its distinctive red cap with white spots. Unlike psilocybin, its psychoactive compounds do not produce typical psychedelic effects but have been reported to induce a relaxing and somewhat euphoric experience.
On the other hand, Delta 8 THC gummies are a type of cannabinoid derived from hemp. Delta 8 THC is chemically similar to Delta 9 THCâthe active substance in marijuanaâbut it tends to have a milder psychoactive impact. Users often report feeling calmer, clearer, and less anxious compared to traditional THC products.
Effects and Benefits: Tailoring to Your Needs
When choosing between Amanita Muscaria and Delta 8 THC gummies, it's essential to consider the type of effects you are seeking:
Amanita Muscaria gummies are primarily used for relaxation and stress reduction. They may also help with sleep and provide a mild, dreamy state that some find pleasant for unwinding at the end of the day.
Delta 8 THC gummies can offer benefits such as enhanced clarity, a boost in mood, and an overall feeling of well-being. They are also used by some for pain relief and to reduce nausea.
Both types of gummies can be beneficial, depending on your specific wellness goals and how your body responds to these compounds.
Legality Across the USA
The legality of Amanita Muscaria and Delta 8 THC gummies varies across different states, making it a crucial factor to consider:
Amanita Muscaria gummies are legal in most states as they do not contain psilocybin, the psychedelic component found in other types of magic mushrooms. However, their sale and distribution might still be restricted in some areas.
Delta 8 THC gummies, while federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill as they are derived from hemp, face varying restrictions at the state level. Some states have explicitly banned or regulated the sale and use of Delta 8 products due to their psychoactive nature.
It's advisable to check the current laws in your state before purchasing either type of gummy to ensure compliance and avoid legal issues.
Safety Profile and Considerations
Safety is a paramount concern when exploring new wellness products. Here's what you need to know:
Amanita Muscaria gummies generally have a safe profile when consumed in controlled doses. However, the raw form of Amanita Muscaria can be toxic if not properly processed, so it is crucial to purchase these gummies from reputable sources.
Delta 8 THC gummies are considered safe when produced and used responsibly. The primary safety concerns involve ensuring that the product is free from harmful contaminants, often an issue in unregulated markets.
When considering either product, it's beneficial to start with a lower dose to see how your body reacts and consult a healthcare provider if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
Mush Mouth: A Trusted Source for Quality Gummies
Mush Mouth offers high-quality Amanita Muscaria Gummy products that can be a great addition to your wellness routine. By choosing a reputable brand like Mush Mouth, you ensure that the products are manufactured with safety and efficacy in mind, providing you with a reliable and enjoyable experience.
Conclusion
Whether you opt for Amanita Muscaria or Delta 8 THC gummies, both options present unique benefits and considerations. By understanding your personal health needs, the legal landscape in your state, and prioritizing safety, you can make an informed decision that enhances your well-being and aligns with your lifestyle. As you explore the world of mushroom gummies and THC alternatives, what are the most important factors for you in choosing the right gummy?

Questions
Would you use helvetica in your designs?
Helvetica when it was first created was a revolutionary typeface. I donât find that there is anything particularly exciting about it. However I can acknowledge that when it was first created it was what everybody had wanted/dreamed of due to its sleek legible qualities, hence why it quickly became a universal typeface. This is still a key point in new design today. So it could be useful for designs that require simple clean cut type. I would consider using helvetica for certain designs but I would tend to lean towards a more artistic, striking typefaces depending on the purpose of the design.
Would you use helvetica for one context (type of work/audience) but not another? Why or why not? Â
I may lean towards using Helvetica for certain purposes e.g advertising if I wanted a familiar, neutral, and legible look that the viewers/audience would already be comfortable with.

2022 in Review: Eight Times Science Exceeded Expectations in 2022! From Asteroids to A.I., This Was a Year of Scientific Superlatives.
â By Matthew Hutson | December 28, 2022
Itâs no surprise that we keep finding and building cool things. But the things that we find and build can still surprise us. 2022 was another year full of science and technology advances. Itâs too soon to identify the most important developments of the year; science takes time to mature. But here are eight moments that were remarkable to me, to experts in their respective fields, and even to those doing the work.
We Nudged an Asteroid
Our solar system is something of a minefield. Between the sun, the asteroid belt, and the planets and their rings and moons lies a sprinkling of smaller rocks, some of which cross paths with Earth. Weâd like to avoid sharing the fate of the dinosaurs, and so have endeavored to spot potentially troublesome intruders; currently, we know of no asteroid larger than a hundred and forty metres across that poses a serious risk of collision in the next century. But what we donât know can still hurt us, and we must prepare for the unexpected.
Last year, SpaceX launched a nasa mission, led by Johns Hopkins University, called dartâthe Double Asteroid Redirection Test. As David W. Brown explains, in his blow-by-blow recounting of the mission, its target was an unassuming pair of asteroids, seven million miles away, dubbed Didymos (measured at nearly half a mile across) and Dimorphos (a bit more than five hundred feet across). At the time, Dimorphos orbited Didymos every eleven hours and fifty-five minutes. The dart spacecraft, whose mass at launch exceeded half a ton, was not meant to obliterate either object. But it could nudge one or both of the bodies off courseâa proof of concept for the idea that humanity could change an incoming asteroidâs trajectory, averting a collision with Earth.
Success was defined as a head-on collision with Dimorphos that would alter its orbital period by at least seventy-three seconds. On September 26th, dart hit its mark at roughly fourteen thousand miles an hour, reducing the orbit by a full thirty-two minutes. (Earth-based observations measured the effect by tracking how often the two bodies eclipsed each other.) It might have been a shot heard round the solar system, if not for spaceâs deafening silence. Scientists are still analyzing data on the aftermath.
In the movie âArmageddon,â from 1998, Bruce Willisâs character detonates a bomb on an Earth-bound asteroid, preventing the movieâs titular event. A quarter century later, we have the technology to achieve a similar aim more elegantly. dart-like spacecraft, teamed with careful observation and early detection, now gives us the ability to defend the planet weâre otherwise doing so much to despoil.
Magic Mushrooms Reduced Depression
Many people whoâve taken psychedelics understand their healing powers. Iâm one of them: twenty-seven years ago, I profitably enlisted acid and ecstasy in my battle with depression. Because of long-standing laws restricting recreational, therapeutic, and even scientific use of the drugs, research is still catching up. But, this year, findings on the efficacy of psilocybinâthe magic in magic mushroomsâagainst depression have left even some scientists dazed.
Though antidepressants are often a first line of defense in treating depression, they frequently fail to provide relief. More than a quarter of a billion people worldwide face whatâs known as major depressive disorder, according to estimates, and some studies indicate that at least thirty per cent of them contend with so-called treatment-resistant depression. This past month, The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of the largest-ever clinical trial of psilocybin, in which two hundred and thirty-three people with treatment-resistant depression took part. They each received just a single doseâone, ten, or twenty-five milligramsâunder professional guidance. Three weeks later, those whoâd received the largest dose rated significantly lower on depression than those in the lowest-dose group.
Another study, published in Nature Medicine, demonstrated the benefits of psilocybin over the antidepressant escitalopram (whose brand name is Lexapro). Using neuroimaging, the researchers also explored some possible mechanisms for the treatment: they found that the patients who received psilocybin experienced an increase in the integration of activity across the networks in their brains. Perhaps psilocybin, by increasing cognitive flexibility, allows people to escape ruts of thought. Another study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, looked at patients with major depressive disorder whoâd received two psychedelic sessions. A full year later, seventy-five per cent maintained at least a fifty-per-cent reduction in their depression scores.
Authors of all three studies told me that they were surprised by the treatmentâs durability. Work remains to be doneâbut these findings suggest that some people may be able to find a way out from under a disease that was previously immovable.
Earth Got Hotterâand Hotter
In an era of global warming, we expect temperature records to be broken. But they are now being broken with surprising frequency, and by surprising amounts. In July, the United Kingdom suffered a historic heat wave: the previous high had been 101.7 degrees Fahrenheit, but at least forty-six weather stations met or exceeded that temperature, the hottest by 2.9 degrees. Of more than a hundred weather stations that had been collecting data for at least half a century, the majority broke ceilings. One village cleared its hurdle by a hold-my-(warm-)beer 11.3 degrees.
The U.K. wasnât alone. Other countries in Europe saw records topple, and the continent as a whole experienced its hottest-ever June-through-August, on average. Huge wildfires spread across the continent. Meanwhile, India suffered an apocalyptic heat wave this spring; several continents experienced drought; and China weathered its hottest and longest heat wave on record.
In August, an international team of eleven scientists published an analysis in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences titled âClimate Endgame: Exploring catastrophic climate change scenarios.â They argue that the international target of maintaining temperature increases well below two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) has led research to focus on lower-end warming scenarios, leaving us unprepared for more drastic changes. Carbon-dioxide-caused loss of stratocumulus cloud decks could heat the planet by an additional eight degrees Celsius by the end of the century. âParticularly worrying is a âtipping cascade,â â they write. Damages to the environment are likely to be nonlinear, leading to low-likelihood outcomes that should be looked into. The article notes that climate change might trigger or exacerbate blackouts, famine, pandemics, mass extinction, nuclear war. In short, we should expect the unexpected.
Brain Cells in a Dish Played Pong
A staple of science fiction (and philosophy) is the notion that youâre just a brain in vat, connected to the real world through wires. Another is that youâre just a simulated being in a virtual universe. An experiment reported this year in Neuron combined elements of both tropes. Layers of brain cells wired up to a computer experienced a world consisting of a variant of the video game Pong, and learned to play.
The researchers grew some brain cells out of human stem cells, and collected others from mouse embryos, then placed about eight hundred thousand mouse or human cells onto arrays of electrodes in dishes. (A human brain has roughly a hundred thousand times more neurons than that.) The electrical activity of two regions of neurons on each array were translated into the up-and-down movement of a paddle on a video screen. The position of the bouncing ball was fed back to a different set of neurons in the network; when the paddle connected with the ball, all the electrodes delivered a series of zaps, reinforcing the neuronsâ behavior. Within a few minutes, the system could handle rallies of a few hits.
Karl J. Friston, a neuroscientist at University College London who is one of the paperâs co-authors, told me that, although the team had hypothesized that the neurons and silicon would be able to speak the same language and learn in this way, they werenât at all sure that their âDishBrainâ would work. âIt was the same kind of surprise one might have if you came across a talking dog, â he said. âMoreover, the fact that human neurons were able to sustain play longer than mouse neurons was a bit like discovering that dogs are better at talking than cats.â
The setup is more than a party trick. It allows for exploration of weighty questions: how cells communicate, how biological and synthetic intelligence combine, what happens in brain disorders such as epilepsy and dementia, and how drugs affect the brain. The group now plans to test the effects of alcohol on their system. âHow would a âdrunken DishBrainâ cope with playing Pong?â Friston asked, in a recent press release. Beer pong just got serious.
A Blockchain Reduced Its Energy Use by 99.95 Per Cent
Few mortals understand blockchains. What you may have heard is that theyâre somehow related to cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, and that they use prodigious amounts of energy. Crypto assets consume more energy than many countriesâa big problem.
In September, an important blockchain altered the way it verifies transactions, drastically cutting its energy use. Bitcoin, the first blockchain-based cryptocurrency, verifies transactions through a system called âproof of workâ: computers around the world race to solve complex puzzles, and the winners get some cryptocurrency and the ability to add blocks of transactions to the ledger. Itâs all the problem-solving thatâs so energy intensive. By contrast, the Ethereum blockchain, launched in 2015, was meant to use âproof of stake.â Would-be validators would place their own cryptocurrency into a kind of escrow; when a block is added, theyâre rewarded in proportion with their stake. (If the blockâs contents are fraudulent, you lose a portion of your stake.) Proof of stake is far more energy-efficientâbut it was so devilishly difficult to develop that Ethereum launched using proof of work instead.
In 2020, the Ethereum developer community created a parallel ledger called Beacon Chain that used proof of stake. After nearly two years of testing, they set a date for the Merge, which would combine the two chains into one that used proof of stake. Many people worried the Merge would overturn crypto markets; some experts compared the procedure to swapping plane engines mid-flight. But, on September 15th, the Merge succeeded with hardly a hitch. A developer named Tim Beiko told me that the blockchain looked so surprisingly stable afterward that he âhad to double-checkâ the performance graph.
Ethereum was already more important than Bitcoin in many ways. It undergirds not only a cryptocurrency but, also, one-of-a-kind digital art works called N.F.T.s, automatically executing âsmart contracts,â and many computer applications for finance, entertainment, and communications. The Merge now makes Ethereum transactions faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient, by an estimated 99.95 per cent. In a Merge viewing party hosted by the Ethereum Foundation, one developer commented, âThis is just an incredible feat. . . . People using the network will have no idea that anything has changed. But everything has changed.â
We Found Two-Million-Year-Old Mastodon DNA
DNA is fragile, geologically speaking. The double-helical molecule that gives cells their marching orders starts disintegrating as soon as we dieâand even while we liveâas our own enzymes cut it up. Itâs also not immune to water, air, or microbes. One study estimated that its chemical bonds have a half-life of around five hundred years. Discover a very old specimen of DNA, and you have to assemble especially tiny puzzle pieces if you want to put the genome back together.
Last year, however, researchers managed to reconstruct DNA from two Siberian mammoths that were more than a million years old, using material extracted from their molars. That work nearly doubled the record for oldest DNA sequence. This year, a second group of researchers nearly doubled the record again. As they reported in Nature, they found their DNA not in a long-in-the-tooth tooth but in sediment deposits at the mouth of a fjord in northern Greenland, where, around two million years ago, plant and animal remains had washed up. The researchers found DNA in forty-one soil samples at five sites. Much of it had adhered to quartz or clay, which may have protected the delicate strands from the ravages of enzymes. âThe preservation of the DNA and our ability to extract and sequence it has been a major leap for us,â Kurt H. KjĂŚr, a geologist at the University of Copenhagen and one of the paperâs lead authors, told me.
The team was able to gather genetic material not just from one or two species but from more than a hundred types of plants, as well as animals including mastodons, reindeer, and horseshoe crabs. The researchers figure that the landscape, which is now a frozen wasteland, must once have been about twenty degrees warmer. The work provides clues to an earlier way of life, and demonstrates whatâs possible going forward. Scientists have a hope of reconstructing biological lineages and pictures of entire historical ecosystems. They may even extract genes to help todayâs plants and animals cope with a changing world.
Artificial Intelligence Learned Diplomacy
Youâd think weâd learn our lesson: we set challenges for artificial intelligence, say it wonât meet them anytime soon, and then find that A.I. has vanquished us before we expect. Itâs happened with chess, Go, poker, and StarCraft II. In 2019, Noam Brown, a computer scientist at Meta, had wrapped up his work on A.I. for multiplayer poker and was casting about for a new challenge; he chose one that he thought would safely keep him occupied for at least a decade.
The task was Diplomacy, a board game in which seven players controlling army and navy units vie for control over a map of Europe. Players can attack or support each other, and each turn begins with a round of nonbinding negotiation. You might propose back-scratching, then deliver backstabbing. Itâs a game of trust and deceit, hammered out through the placement of pieces and the crafting of language.
As Brown told me, a bot for Diplomacy sounded like sci-fi. A.I. can strategize (see AlphaGo) and it can speak (see ChatGPT). But most language-spewing A.I.s have no notion of truth or falsehood. Meta, however, developed a system, called cicero, that learned to ground its utterances in context and goals. After observing human Diplomacy games and playing copies of itself, cicero joined an online community and played forty games. In a paper published in Science, Brown and his team reported that it outperformed nine out of ten players. Moreover, its written speech was so slick that only one player noted his suspicion of its silicon insides. On one occasion, the system, playing as France, went down for ten minutes due to a technical fault. When it came back online, it replied to Englandâs appealsââWould really love to hear from you!ââwith a made-up excuse: âi am on the phone with my gf.â Humanity is not ready.
We Generated Fusion Power (Finally, Sorta)
What counts as an expectation? In fusion powerâthe shotgun marriage of atoms to create electricityâprogress is perpetually (and paradoxically) expected to underwhelm. An old joke holds that fusion is always thirty years away.
This month, though, researchers inched closer to controlled fusion power. Nuclear fusion, which occurs inside stars, requires intense heat and pressure; most fusion-power experiments heat hydrogen and confine it using magnetic fields, while others blast pellets of hydrogen with lasers. The National Ignition Facility, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California, takes the second approach. The facilityâs main aim is to contribute to nuclear-weapons research, with sustainable energy as a kind of by-product. Completed in 2009, at triple its initial budget, it was originally expected to achieve âignitionââin which the energy emitted from the fusion reaction exceeds that imparted by the lasersâby 2012.
Progress was slower than expected: ignition finally occurred on December 5, 2022. A hundred and ninety-two lasers briefly blasted a cylinder the size of a pencil eraser, which emitted X-rays, which compressed a contained pellet of frozen hydrogen atoms, some of which fused into helium, releasing energetic neutrons. All told, the target received about two megajoules of energy (enough to light a hundred-watt bulb for five hours, but condensed into a flash) and released more than threeâa little more energy than the scientists expected. The outcome both missed and surpassed predictions.
Science moves in fits and starts. Donât expect the stadium-size National Ignition Facility to lead to a neighborhood fusion reactor anytime soon. For one thing, while the lasers conveyed two megajoules of energy, powering them required three hundred. So much for net gain. And any reactor made using this design would require rapid-fire lasers that blast multiple targets per second. The new fusion results are exceptionalâand yet everyday fusion is still, probably, at least thirty years away. Weâll just have to manage our expectations. âŚ

What Alcohol Does to a Stressed-Out Brain
In mid-March, when the reality of Covid-19 was setting in across the United States, alcohol sales soared. According to figures quoted by Bloomberg News, beer and wine sales surged 32% and 47%, respectively. Sales of hard liquor and cocktail mixes rose even more. Facing the prospect of extended stay-at-home restrictions, it seems that many Americans were in a hurry to stock their home bars and liquor cabinets.
This was a surprise to no one. Hard times call for hard drinks, as almost every down-and-out film hero can attest. And Hollywood tropes aside, the belief that alcohol can help a person âunwindâ or âtake the edge offâ is a common one in the United States and Europe.
âThereâs a widespread assumption that alcohol reduces stress,â says Michael Sayette, PhD, an alcohol researcher and professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. He says the average consumer believes this, and so do many doctors, according to clinician surveys. He also says the notion that alcohol âcalms the nervesâ is an ancient one. In some of his work, Sayette quotes the Greek poet Alcaeus, who wrote, âWe must not let our spirits give way⌠Best of all defenses is to mix plenty of wine, and drink it.â
These old and persistent beliefs have some truth behind them. âAlcohol is an anesthetic,â meaning it dulls pain, says Rajita Sinha, PhD, founding director of the Yale School of Medicine Stress Center. âAnd physiologically, alcohol affects the bodyâs stress pathway in a very potent way.â She explains that alcohol can in some cases blunt the brain and bodyâs response to a stressful event.
A 2011 study in the journal Alcoholism found that, immediately following a public-speaking task, the blood levels of the stress hormone cortisol tend to spike. But when people in the study were given the equivalent of two alcoholic drinks immediately following the public-speaking task, this cortisol response was dampened. A 2009 study in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that raising peopleâs blood alcohol content (BAC) to a level of 0.08% â the threshold for impaired driving charges in many states â reduced their âstartle reflexâ in response to anxiety-provoking electric shocks.
Thereâs also evidence that alcohol can strengthen the action of certain neurochemicals in ways that mimic the effects of anxiety-reducing pharmaceutical drugs, such as Valium or Xanax. âAlcohol has similar effects as benzodiazepines â they both modulate the GABA-A receptor,â says Manoj Doss, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. He explains that GABA is the brainâs main âinhibitoryâ neurotransmitter, meaning it tends to turn down brain activity. Alcohol can facilitate the action of GABA, and this may partly explain why a drink at the end of a frantic day can calm anxious thoughts.
While these study findings support the belief that alcohol can reduce stress, thereâs a lot more to the story. âWe now have 50 years of laboratory research that suggests itâs far more complicated than one would believe,â Sayette says. âWhat weâre finding is that itâs not one size fits all. Weâre still answering questions such as under what conditions, and for whom, does alcohol work to alleviate stress.â
According to a 2011 review in Behavioral Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction, heavy drinking can actually cause the bloodâs cortisol levels to rise, rather than fall. Also, heart rate and blood pressure both tend to increase with heavy drinking â especially as the body breaks down alcohol and its toxic byproducts flood the bloodstream. The amount of alcohol that constitutes âheavy drinkingâ varies from one person to the next. But Sayette says that longtime drinkers who frequently turn to alcohol to manage stress likely have different responses to it than light or infrequent drinkers.
âIf youâre consuming quite a few drinks to reduce stress and you do this all the time, what happens is that you start to alter your brain chemistry,â he says. âThe brainâs normal non-alcohol state begins to change, and in some cases it may become a more anxious one.â This new anxiety baseline can fuel further drinking, and so thereâs a snowball effect where stress and alcohol feed off each other, Sayette says.
Yaleâs Sinha echoes these points and says that when someone is accustomed to drinking away stress, they may feel anxious or antsy when they canât have alcohol. They may also need more and more booze to experience the calming effects that once enjoyed after a single drink. âThereâs very little data to show that the anti-stress effects of alcohol are sustained,â she says.
But what about the drinker who has a single cocktail or a glass of beer or wine following a stressful day? Sayette says the pharmacological effects of this amount of alcohol â for better or worse â are probably minimal. âMost of the research over the years has been done with intoxicating or near-intoxicating doses of alcohol, and the amount of alcohol in single drink, or even two, is below the level of alcohol associated with intoxication,â he explains. Some of the above research suggests that, at these levels, alcohol may help lower some markers of anxiety or stress, but any benefits are going to be small.
Much of alcoholâs stress-combating allure may stem from peopleâs attitudes and behaviors while drinking. âIf you believe alcohol will make you feel relaxed, then as soon as you open that bottle of wine or put that drink to your lips, youâll probably start to feel relaxed,â Sayette says. In other words, thereâs a psychological element at work. He also points out that many people engage in naturally calming rituals when they drink. They settle into a comfortable chair or turn on some music. They stop checking their email and talk with friends or housemates. âDrinking is often the catalyst for these other relaxing behaviors,â Sayette says.
The take-home message seems to be that, for some people, alcohol in small doses can help reduce stress. On the other hand, if youâre consistently trying to drown your stress in alcohol, your drinking may be counterproductive â and could eventually turn harmful.

A Review of three works from the âShape and Formâ Exhibition at @heartofthetribe Gallery, Glastonbury
As our final assignment for our Art History module for @strodefadâ we were required to write an essay discussing eithere an art history movement or a recent exhibition visited. Always up for a challenge i chose to write about the brief opportunity I got to see an art gallery between lockdowns in the new gallery that i am fortunate to have just a few minutes walk from my home here in Glastonbury.
What made it a really special experience was that i managed to contact two of the three artist I chose to include in the essay and they very generously answered my questions about their exhibit pieces to give me some context and process insights as first-hand accounts and it was wonderful to be able to ask the creators quesitons about their work and how they made it. The exhibition had high quality contributions from over 30 Somerset artists, so it was hard to select just 3 works, but I managed and got the essay completed in time.
This is an analysis of three selected works from the âShape and Formâ exhibition at the Heart of the Tribe Gallery in Glastonbury. The gallery only opened in September 2020 and despite the restrictions caused by the COVID pandemic, this was the third exhibition that the gallery has managed to stage since then.
Following a core artist group launch exhibition âDiversityâ, and solo exhibition âBeauty and Truthâ by John Minshull, this exhibition was a collation of works submitted by 30 Somerset artists following an open call for contributions from the gallery core artists and online directory members.
Curated by gallery manager Kim von Coels (aka artist âThe Krumble Empireâ), the aim of the exhibition was âto explore the fundamental building blocks of visual art, both geometric and organicâ. The exhibition was open from 3rd December -26th January and I managed to see it twice before lockdown restrictions came into force. A virtual tour (1) is also available here
1. Millie Gleeson: âAll Weâll Knowâ
The Painting was displayed in a prominent position on the last wall as you exit the exhibition, directly opposite a canvas featuring an abstract female form in greyscale graphite, and the scale of this canvas (60 x 48 inches) made it really stand out.
I saw Millieâs solo show also entitled âAll Weâll Knowâ at the Red Brick Building in June 2019. She uses reference photographs to help with composition and is heavily influenced by her time in Berlin and Mexico.
Many of her works feature masks painted on the (mostly nude) female subjects, so what I found fascinating about this piece was that the face was illuminated and prominent and she is swathed in billowing robes.
I contacted the artist for more information on the context and process of the painting.
She told me this is a self-portrait, painted from a 'still' of the artist performing in a music video her friends (the Hics) produced, also called "All We'll Know"( 2 )
Gleeson started began painting this in 2014, but it was put into storage until she revisited to complete it in 2019.
She commented âit was a huge time of transformation and the end of an era and perhaps I had to return to the painting when I felt I'd fully transformed.â
The Painting has lots of movement, which is representative of the video it is sourced from, the performers are in an industrial setting and are either submerged under water, or as captured in this image, rising up and breaking free. The robes are flowing and there is a sense of movement in the arms and legs. Her website (3) describes how the work was developed as part of a series developed during an Artist Residency at Arquetopia in Mexico.âThe residency applied Levanasian ethics to the artistic process, teaching to respect the integrity of differences and question the desire for totalisation. Questioning whether you can truly know the other and if you only know the self, how can you respect the space between?â âAny creative project I have embarked on at the core has revolved around the topic of identity or identification. Following the residency lectures my project became entirely introspective, leading me on a journey of self-discovery. I began to look at my own shadow, distortions, fractions, mirror images, deep and dark aspects of myself. Using the vibrant colours that surrounded me I began to explore my own conflicts and duality through a series of self-portraits, in an exploration to âAll weâll know.âI really resonated with this piece as it reminded me of the Salvador Dali painting ' Christ of St John of the Crossâ I saw at the Glasgow Kelvingrove museum. Light comes from above and the arms are widely placed. The pale blue colour palette and rich drapery in the dress against the dark background is similar to that shown in âThe Countess of Southamptonâ ( 4) (Anthony Van Dyck 1599-1641), seen at the Cambridge Fitzwilliam museum.
Ruary is an Edinburgh-born artist who has lived and worked all over the world and is a gallery core artist working in an attic studio above.
He is inspired by nature and psychedelic culture (6) and another of his works âSacred Chaosâ was chosen as the exhibition feature image.
I interviewed the artist to learn more about the context and process behind these works. Ruary explained that âTrap Dance was a process-oriented piece, created as an experiment using masking tape to create random abstract geometric formsâ.
The piece depicts two females and a male dancing, with Cubist and Italian futurists-influenced segmentation and distortion of the figures. The artist noted that the title âTrap Danceâ is a pun, as the two female figures appear to be being pressed together by the male dancer (Allen quipped it should have been called âTape Danceâ). The experimental process with repeated randomly placed masking tape and paint until the forms emerged, resulted in an abstract image.
The artist saw the forms of the dancers appearing and added them at late stages of development. It is more narrative in comparison with the cover piece âSacred Chaosâ; which was another process oriented, straight-edged construction using platonic forms, mathematical constructions, intersecting circles and combining them to make a striking abstract image. The artist has a lifelong interest in Alchemy in art and alchemical symbolism, and this is evident in the works presented here (7).
The colour palette is cooler at top and has more vibrant and darker tones at bottom, with a spotlight in the top left corner, which the artist suggests is reminiscent of a stage or nightclub scene. There is lots of movement as the figures are interweaved amongst the abstract shapes. Â
This painting is hung in a long narrow corridoor directly opposite the toilets (another âtrapâ reference?) and adjacent to the exit door to the garden space. The works surrounding the piece are smaller in scale and have less visual impact, and I think that having to stand so close to it makes it more of an experience as the viewer is drawn into the movement and abstract forms on the canvas. There is no opportunity to stand back and see the work in a wider context so one is trapped like the dancers in the image.
3. âLost Toysâ by Julie Ackerman .
This is an installation assemblage sculpture piece selected from a collection of 10 museum themed boxes. (8). The work is inspired by the âcabinets of curiositiesâ or âWunderkammerâ (as described by Anastasiya Gutnic from the Metropolitan museum of art here with an example from the German artist Nicolaus I Kolb) (9).
The cabinet is displayed with a second piece called and âScience Labâ and both are relatively small in scale requiring the viewer to lean in close to see the details.
Key elements of a Wunderkammer are:
¡      Naturalia (natural, found objects),
¡      Artificialia/Artifacta (mand-made, abstract objects), and
¡      Scientifica (scientific instruments and technological items)
The cabinet contents are carefully considered to reflect the message that the artist is trying to express, and fits the categories described above.
I chose this piece as the lockdown period has made many of us question what is important to us and question our consumerism and itsâ environmental impact.Using upcycled packaging and materials has been a theme of my own creative practice this year.
The artist states on her biography (8)
âI was compelled to take on the challenge of using unwanted objects and materials as an art medium. Raising awareness of a world in crisis through art is paramount in my work. By transforming waste into beautiful works of art, I hope to inspire and encourage the 'Art of Recycling' turning a negative situation into a positive one.â
The artist goes on to state âThe impact of overpopulation means greater demand on natural resources and an escalating waste problem. We need nature to thrive by reducing our demand for new materials, leaving nature intact.â
In the âLost Toysâ cabinet a collection of sticks and a pine-cone (Naturalia) are surrounded by a plastic âmonsterâ (Artificialia) and assorted toy animals. A green butterfly rests on a branch with a wooden âtribal styleâ peg and a âprotectiveâ dragon flying overhead and a lurking toy hairbrush in the background.
The second cabinet has scientific paraphernalia (Scientifica) and a skull with glasses, references to the impact of sanitary waste and plastic pollution on marine life. There are also humorous touches, like the small creature and drawing pin on top of the skull.
This fits with the exhibition theme as it invites the viewer to examine how the items relate to each other and to our own experiences. Viewers will respond to the individual elements and interpret their relationships differently.
The placing of the cabinets in a transition space between two rooms containing large paintings is also an interesting variation in form and requires a different type of interaction by the viewer.
Summary
The aim of the exhibition was to explore the fundamental building blocks of visual art, both geometric and organic, and the curator has selected a broad range of 2D, and 3D exhibits to really allow this theme to be represented. I found it quite difficult to select only three works for this essay as there was such a high quality to choose from.
These three selected artists have interpreted the theme in quite different ways, but one gets a sense of shape and form from all of their works shown.

Unintended Consequences of Strict Drug Laws
By:Â Victoria BartholomewÂ
Everyone knows that you live life dealing with the consequences of your own actions, whether good or bad. Everything that you do has a consequence to it, even if it is a good consequence. However, majority of people automatically associate the negative connotation of consequence when they encounter that word. Â
Though consequences can be either good or bad, they can also be unintended. Sounds kind of odd right? Hear me out and think about it in the sense of strict parents. Having parents that love and care for you is essential for having a good upbringing. Your parents think they are doing what is best for you by being harsher with their punishments as well having full control and restricting a lot of things that other parents allow their kids to do. Things like go to parties or stay the night at friends' houses on weekdays. Things that are so normal for some, are exotic adventures for others.
Now I am sure you are thinking, âokay well what does this have to do with unintended consequences?â and that is where it becomes interesting. If a teenager lives under stricter rules in their household, then it can cause them to become rebellious and sneaky, causing them to lie in order to get what they want. Strict parents seem to create some of the sneakiest kids.Â
You might be wondering if I am stating this from personal experience, and all I can say to that is its entirely up to your imagination. Â
Which leads me to my next point, having strict parents causes unintended consequences and so does having strict drug laws. What you may or may not know is that the stricter the drug laws, the harder the war on drugs becomes. Â
However, what is the war on drugs and how do strict drug laws, unintended consequences and this war all tie together? Glad you asked, letâs get into it, then shall we? Â
War On Drugs- A Little History Â
All the facts presented to you can be found at https://www.drugpolicy.org/issues/brief-history-drug-warÂ
We are the Drug Policy Alliance. Â
Did you know that a lot of current illegal drugs have been used for thousands of years for different purposes? Did they ever teach you in school about how cocaine used to be commonly used by dentist as an anesthetic for their patients? Â
I remember learning about that story in high school as well as college. However, drugs such as cocaine and marijuana, psychedelics and opium became illegal over time and are all currently illegal except for medicinal use of marijuana in some states.
According to We are the Drug Policy Alliance Â
All the fact in this next segment can be found at https://www.drugpolicy.org/issues/brief-history-drug-war
In the early 1900âs the first anti-cocaine law was put into place. This law was directed towards African American men within the South and in the 1910âs as well as 20âs anti-marijuana laws were created within the Midwest as well as Southwest. Â
This new law was directed towards Mexican migrants as well as Mexican Americans. These drug laws were all target to races that were not Caucasian, which has portrayed this idea of drug laws being directed towards minority groups mostly. Â
All fact credit goes to https://www.drugpolicy.org/issues/brief-history-drug-war We are the Drug Policy Alliance. Â
Did you know that President Nixon was the individual who declared the war on drugs? Me either, but it happened in June of 1971. Â
According to the We are the Drug Policy Alliance President Nixon took drastic measures when he declared the war on drugs. He increased law enforcement efforts to have a higher presence of the federal drug control agencies as well as pushing for no-knock warrants as well as mandatory sentences. However, he was advised that marijuana possession and distribution for personal uses should be decriminalized but he did not care too much for that recommendation. Â
Over time there was a period when states started to decriminalize marijuana possession, but just as soon as that started, it ended. Parents started to become very concerned with the number of young teens that were using marijuana and the law shifted back to focusing on making marijuana illegal. By the 1980âs and 90âs incarceration rates to skyrocket due to the enlargement of the drug war.
At this time Ronald Reagan was in this term, and within his presidency it stated the long period of increased incarceration rates that lead to over 400,000 individuals to be put behind bars for nonviolent drug offenses according to Betsy Pearl. This created the notion for the zero tolerance policies within the mid-to-late 1980âs and programs such as Dare were implement and quickly adopted throughout America, even with there being deficiency of any evidence that it was in any way effective.
The information that I have given by Betsy Pearl can be supported at Â
https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/criminal-justice/reports/2018/06/27/452819/ending-war-drugs-numbers/
With drugs laws being so strict, it seemed to create more problems than it solved in terms of the war on drugs. Â
Why Is This a Big Deal? Donât We Have More Important Things to Worry About? Â
A lot of issues arise when it comes to the war on drugs, a lot of them are obvious right off the back, while others tend to get look over. It is no secret at this point that most people have caught onto the racial disparities within the judicial system, not just in terms of the war on drugs. Â
It gets portrayed within the media when there are cases of police brutality as well as shows about death row and the individuals who swear they were wrongly accused of the crime. This same issue arises when dealing with the war on drugs, because it seems that the laws seem to coincide with racial disparities. Â
It is no secret that African American men are more likely than Caucasian men to get arrested for drug-related charges. This sadly might not surprise a lot of people; it might honestly not surprise anyone really. Â
So why is this a big deal? It is a big deal because it disproportionately puts individuals behind bars and treats one group unfairly to such a miserable extent. The judicial system receives a lot of backlash when it comes to funding, because people do not understand the real cost of jails and prisons. Â
There is an overall bias when it comes to drug users and jails. As I have learned over my four years of college, many people want to get these individuals off the streets and just let them rot in jail. People do not care to look at just how much of an impact this has on society not only socially, but also economically. Â
What individuals might not realize is that it cost the hard-working taxpayers more money to keep people in jail. Â Besty Pearl stated that in 2015 it was found that the federal government spent $9.2 million dollars a day just to keep people with drug-related charges locked up. Â
You can read more about what Betsy Pearl has to say about all of this in the following link. Â
https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/criminal-justice/reports/2018/06/27/452819/ending-war-drugs-numbers/
Even without having to do the math of how much that would cost the American people annually, it comes out to a ridiculously massive number. Â
Do you remember how early I talked about these âunintended consequencesâ? Well the annual cost for the American people is one of those unintended consequences caused from the war on drugs. The government, when they started the war on drugs, did not intend for the increase in drug-related arrest to cause a financial burden on the hard-working taxpayers. Â
However, it is a very heavy financial burden, as well as does nothing to help with reduction of substance abuse and misuse. If anything, according to Betsy Pear, it has been linked with increased overdoses for individuals once they are released from jail. This is another unintentional consequence to strict drug laws and the war on drugs. It was never the government's intention for individuals to have higher risks of dying once they are released from prison for drug-related charges. Â
It is just something that came out of what seemed like a promising end to a drug crisis. The governments intentions were to get drugs off the streets and reduce the rate of crime caused by drugs, but it seems that instead it only created more problems. Â
So, What Does It All Mean? What are all the unintended consequences?
It might strike you as confusing when trying to decipher what all of this is supposed to mean. What I am trying to explain is that having strict drug laws is not an effective way to reduce drug-related crime and only causes more issues than it fixes. It gives police a gateway to racial profiling and gives minorities unfair advantages within a court of law.
It causes higher incarceration rates for crimes that are not nearly as dangerous or threatening. It increases drug related crime since people can not report any actions taken against them to authorities. It keeps the black market running, since more serious drug users will do what they need to get their fix. These are all consequences I would hope that the government never intended to happen when trying to reduce the drug use in America.

World After Capital: Plan for Part Four
NOTE: I have been posting excerpts from World After Capital on Mondays. But because I am doing a more substantial rewrite of Part Four, todayâs post describes what I am planning to cover.
I want Part Four to be more practical by pointing out ways we can take responsibility today for making the transition to the Knowledge Age. Here are areas I am planning to cover. I am curious if anyone has additional suggestions. First there are direct contributions to the three freedoms.
1. Mindfulness research and applications (Psychological Freedom)
There have been recent breakthroughs in understanding the physiological and neurological underpinnings of mindfulness practices. More work here is needed including ranging from foundational (such as mathematical models of the neural networks) to practical (such as treatment with Psilocybin and other psychedelic drugs). There are also great opportunities to contribute to mindfulness through computer applications, from practice apps such as Simple Habit to more elaborate ones based on reading brainwave activity. Finally, there is a ton of work to be done around embedding mindfulness in to our every day applications such as email, social media, etc.
2. UBI advocacy and politics (Economic Freedom)
For the first time with Andrew Yang there is a candidate running on a UBI platform for 2020 presidential elections. People can volunteer for his campaign. Even if that comes to an end there are other ways to engage in moving the idea of UBI forward. There are several ongoing research projects, such as the one in Kenya run by Give Directly. There is work on policies that can provide an onramp to UBI, such as the Economic Security Projects evaluation of an expanded Earned Income Tax Credit.
3. Creating open source and Creative Commons content, advancing protocols (Informational Freedom)
While reforming is copyright is hard (still someone should work on that) it is much easier to create reduce the restrictions of copyright for content by making it available as Creative Commons. Same goes for software that is made available under an open source license. Finally there is a lot of work these days on open protocols, particularly in the blockchain area. All of these can help advance informational freedom now. Of course it would also be great to have more people advocate for better policies.
Above and beyond working on these three freedoms, there are other foundational areas that require work if we are to transition successfully into the Knowledge Age. These include
1. Fighting Climate Change
Climate change is a clear and present danger. Much of the current way of living including where on the world people are, how they are fed, where water comes from are on the brink of changing dramatically. We are not prepared for the degree of change thatâs ahead and if we donât intervene now there is a high likelihood of cataclysmic change with massive loss of human lives ahead. There is a multi prong approach thatâs required. We need to aggressively work on non carbon based energy sources (not just solar and renewables but also nuclear, including further work on fusion), we must have some kind of carbon tax style regulation and because we are late we need to research ways of delaying the big change such as solar radiation management. If you are looking for a model of what to do,
2. Defending Democracy
It is sometimes argued that democracy cannot successfully make big transitions and that we should look to different models for the change we need. People point to China as an example of a technocratic government that they claim is doing a better job coping with change. And it is entirely true that many democracies are struggling today. Nonetheless I believe it is essential that we redouble our efforts to defend democracy. This is a rich field of engagement including working on the campaigns of new candidates, fighting gerrymandering at the state level, innovating on voting methods with rank choice voting and experimental techniques such as quadratic voting.
3. Advancing Humanism
This may strike some as the least important of the areas I have mentioned for engagement so far. And while it may have the least short term impact it strikes me as the most important in the long run. What does it even mean to engage here? For starters I think it is about advancing the thinking around what a revived modern humanism needs to look like. I have taken a stab at that but much remains to be done, such as a deeper exploration of the moral consequences. Then there is the need to package humanism as memes that can spread online. Of starting a movement that can grow.
There are of course many other important ways people can contribute to the Knowledge Loop today and in the future that will also help move us forward towards the Knowledge Age.
As I am reworking this, I would love to hear whether people think of these suggestions and what other areas of engagement I absolutely should cover.

I only realised this after the fact, but Flashâs hands in this panel suggest that Elasti-Girlâs power related to her breasts- the âchick who got bigâ coupled with those two cupped hands seems a pretty clear indicator of what heâs interested in. You would have hoped he was more considerate to those that sacrificed themselves to save others (in the very town he is in, no less!), given his experience with Barry, but I guess Rita and the Doom Patrol just donât get those levels of respect.
Anyway, this was a nod to the pre-Vertigo (but still âMature Readersâ) Doom Patrol book, given that both the remains of the Justice League and the Doom Patrol were now based in the same Happy Harbor cave. Awkwardly for the League, perhaps, the issue of Doom Patrol the previous month had that New England town overcome with a form of sex-mania, and resulted in a visitation from the Sex Men. The problem was ultimately solved using Crazy Janeâs Scarlet Harlot personality, so, if nothing else, the character continuity here is pretty accurate despite the likely lack of overlapping readership- there is no sign of events having impacted the League, no super-orgies or such like, but it may explain Wallyâs lewd chat...
There follows a âsurrealâ sequence which I did not enjoy at all, initially. It reads like a very poor representation of what Doom Patrol was, the notion that it was comic book âsurrealismâ basically reducing it to some bad puns, vaguely psychedelic imagery and a couple of non-sequiturs. Itâs less frustrating when the sequence is revealed to be a hallucination caused by a gas intended to keep people away- the dubious surrealism then takes on an almost meta aspect, as though itâs the bad take of someone who has never read Doom Patrol but has decided on what itâs like regardless, this being the real world equivalent of the 3 League members having a very vague and mixed up image of them which influences their hallucination.
Any actual cross-over appearance of the Doom Patrol is limited to the Chief shouting at the 3 men to leave them alone, and then thatâs that. The two teams can co-exist and just ignore each other.
The Doom Patrol that shipped with the same cover date as this issue (49) also references the move, and clearly echoes this policy of separation (which presumably echoes the editorial separation at some level: this wasnât a âBerger bookâ like most of the other âSuggested For Mature Readersâ titles that would go on to form Vertigo- The Sandman, Shade, The Changing Man, Hellblazer etc.- but Tom Peyer was part of that darker corner of the DCU, and it was obvious that DC didnât want too much crossover due to the suggested age restriction for readers):
Josh: So when are the Justice League moving back in here?
Chief: I have absolutely no interest in the activities of the Justice League, Joshua.
As long as they stay away from my laboratory, they can keep doing whatever tedious and public-spirited thing it is that they do.
Josh: And Rebis? Have you told them about Rebis?
Chief: As far as Iâm concerned, Joshua... Itâs none of their business.
Itâs probably for the best, as itâs hard to imagine what the League would have made of the Aenigma Rebis, hilariously (and not inaccurately) described on Comic Vine as a process which âbasically included [Rebis] having sex with itself and being rebornâ. I think it was probably better for all concerned that they focused on their own Breakdowns and left the Doom Patrol to their own.
