so i had heard that some of the newer releases of Monster High dolls were being made with a different type of hair fiber and that a lot of people were upset about this.

i did not, until last night, realize exactly how bad it is.

i had some of the original MH dolls as a kid, but i wasnt able to tap into the collecting hobby until i had become an adult, years after my old toys had already been donated (a tragedy, but not really the point) and before the new reboot was launched. so my doll collecting hobby really began with Rainbow High. i loved that they came with a second outfit, they had long, soft, styleable hair, and they had substance to their bodies! unlike barbie dolls, RH has curves and weight in your hand when you hold them. i thought that was awesome.

anyway. i knew that RH didnt use the saran hair that barbie often used, and that mattel used for MH back in the day and in the reboot. being new to the concept of different types of hair, it didnt matter much to me. i could see the pros and cons of both saran and the type of hair RH used.

now, recently, i tried to buy Skulltimate Secrets Draculaura for my roommate for their birthday, and amazon let me wait a whole month for them to ship it before saying, just kidding, we dont have it, heres your money back. RUDE AS HELL!

well fine. now the SS Fearidescent is out, so ill just get them that one instead. i see in the reviews that her hair type is different, they voice disappointment but ultimately shes still cute and theres not a lot that we, as consumers, can do about it except maybe complain.

and im thinking, whatever, im used to RH hair anyway, and yeah its more staticky but its still pretty soft, so how bad could it be?

well, she came in the mail yesterday, and we were pretty disappointed at just how bad it could be.

ive come to realize that RH hair is not made of polypropylene, the new material theyre giving MH as of this line (ive heard that theyve given g3 clawdeen this type of hair before, which is a whole other can of worms that isnt one of the points of this post), but for rainbow high they generally use Nylon (correct me if im wrong) which is still cheaper and less authentic to real hair than saran, but is still generally pretty soft.

ive never had a doll with pin straight hair (and almost no styling product) feel this BAD in my hands. its coarse, lightweight, and easy to frizz, just from a quick finger comb. i soaked her in hot water and conditioner, and shes only a little bit softer.

i had my partner, who, besides being supportive of my hobbies and listening to me talk about it, knows next to nothing about the differences between types of dolls, feel the difference between the first g3 Drac, RH Karma Nichols, and Fearidescent Drac. on a few quick comparative touches, they noted that saran feels the most like real hair, while RH nylon feels kinda soft but not quite as nice. then they touched new Drac, and all they said was, "ah. depression."

i didnt have my hopes up at all but my expectations were still shattered. i legitimately didnt realize it was this bad. the downgrade is Immense. ive seen people rag on RH hair, and this is WORSE. i seriously cant believe how much worse it is. i didn't think mattel would make a $30 Beloved Brand Name doll with all those accessories and give her DOLLAR STORE KNOCKOFF HAIR, but i guess thats on me for holding a corporation to any sort of production standard in 2023 🙃

anyway, all this is to say, hair fiber snobs, im so sorry and i get it now. this shit sucks.

new doll!! she just arrived today (i actually wasnt expecting her for a while so.. whoops.. here she is..). i wasn’t sure i was gonna buy her at all but she was listed for 40 new in box so i was like y’kno why not..!!!!!! *spends money on dolls instead of like food or going to the dentist or something* and im glad i got her too cuz i think shes much nicer in person lol. i unfortunately clipped a bit of her hair on the back of her head when cutting those FUCKING annoying plastic head tab things they put in, but im also never gonna remove her hair from her ponytail so i think its fine. im just not gonna think about it and pretend i didnt fuck up.. out of sight out of mind..  either way, i am glad to have like a new “older” style drac doll. i do love the new g3 draculauras but i still like the older ones too! her bangs are probably the only thing that pisses me off cuz they are just. solid glue. her earrings are also kinda weird to me but whatever. still p happy with her anyway, i like her outfit. glad she came with a stand (once again - why the fuck dont the g3 monster high dolls come with a stand??!?!?! would it really be that hard guys???? )

since i like to project onto people (and because I just saw the barbie movie and it was fantastic)--

spider-kids doll collecting headcanons post time (brands, do they play with them, and other stuff)

miles: bratz and barbie collector, but likes Bratz the best. probably also has a dreamhouse that his dolls all live in. does actually play with his dolls sometimes and makes up insane/unhinged stories to cope with being spiderman. Just to distract. stand-in for Dok Ock (redressed Girlz Really Rock Cloe) gets her shit clocked a LOTTTTTTTTT by Tokyo a Go Go Sasha. He's sort of interested in doll repainting, but worries a bit abt wrecking the doll permanently. Esp with his Bratz collection, he almost had to sell a kidney for TAGG Sasha. He's been practicing with the cheap ten dollar Barbies you can buy in Wal-Mart, but he still feels kinda bad. Ganke keeps good watch over his school collection when he has to go be Spider-Man tho. They have an Understanding- Miles watches the Funko Pops when Ganke is at coding conventions, and Ganke watches the dawls when Miles has to fight Green Goblin.

gwen: barbie and monster high collector. just starting out so the collection's not really that big. however, she has all the movies torrented on her computer and watches them when she can't fall asleep. DEFINETELY plays with her dolls too, like has an entire running soap opera going with them that's getting more and more complicated-- toralei is beach ken's bastard daughter that is trying to find the gold that creepover draculaura hid with the help of I Can Be A Mars Explorer barbie, and it only gets weirder from there. Her dad is baffled and confused by it, but she doesn't actually mind (in fact it might be the point). also, a little while after she restarted active collecting, miles gets a text at two am apologizing profusely for opening that collectible because her dad came in to clean her room and took Sweet 1600 Draculaura out of the box "as a treat" and THE TIES AREN'T GOING BACK IN

hobie: refuses to participate in the toxic consumerist nature that this hobby promotes while toy companies dump toxins into the air and kill our crops, while working in tandem with the horrifically abusive beauty industry to promote disgustingly unhealthy body standards to AFAB individuals. does hit the locally owned thrift store on occasion. does sleep with what he has all piled in his sleeping bag like a lil burrito. does carry his favorite around with him in his guitar case. as a little treat. doesn't discriminate with brands, his current favorite is a knockoff of monster high that nobody but him treasures. He jumpscares Miguel with her half zombie-fied face every five seconds and has her play peek-a-boo with Mayday. Peter B finds it funny, Miguel does not lol

pavitr: collects exclusively old and really obscure lines that nobody has ever heard of. Like he can give you a minute description of a random brand that you've never even heard of that lasted for like five minutes in the nineties before flaming out into the discount stores and then pull out their nib AND oob versions. all while saying "oh yeah, im not really into collecting that stuff. it takes up so much space, bro." He's still searching for one but pretends he isn't. also plays with them, along with Gayatri, and their stories are just the cutest sweetest things ever. like they're still batshit insane, don't get me wrong, the climaxes are always massive dance offs that involve the whole collection. but it always ends with their two dolls (Mystikats Azra for Gayatri and Tattoo Divas Shary for Pav) riding off into the sunset on one of the Struts dolls.

miles g (oh yeah that's right you though he'd be getting out of this): also bratz and barbie, and also likes Bratz the best. Since he has (some) Prowler Bux money's (mostly) not an issue. (Please don't ask him abt the noises he made when the Felicia repro was confirmed). He also has a Dreamhouse where they live, however it's shoved into his closet and if you ask him abt it, he will deny it. His stories are even more unhinged and insane then Miles, and usually involve running away from cops (redressed Wild Life Safari Cloe) who are trying to interfere with the hero's (the new pretty n punk sasha's) vigilante business. Which is why Hobie likes to join him a lot. Also into doll repainting, but actually even less confident then Miles-- he can do an amazing Bratz lip but the eyes? Forget it. And rn they're too expensive to buy en masse, so..... hooray :)

(none of them, except for hobie, let mayday play with their dolls. hobie does it because he can fix their hair later and also he doesn't believe in property. the others are too spooked. except for maybe miles, he gives her the barbies he's transformed into Weird Barbies. Peter B finds it so cute he could scream, and Miguel agrees. He never SHOWS it but he agrees.)

Hello Clari :3 i was wondering if u have a favourite doll of the monster highs u have… i apologize if u have posted about this already but i am curious to know. I used to collect them a lot and i have stopped but i still cherish them a lot, and im curious to know which one of yours you like the most!!!

Hiiiii! Clawdeen is now my favorite bc she was a gift for a very special occasion ^_^ but my favorite one character-wise is kiyomi haunterly! Shes sooooo fun and her design is so cool to me. My dad brought her for me from abroad when i was a child since she was never madr availible in my countryyyy.. draculaura is also special bc she was the first my mom really hated monster high and wouldnt buy me one so two classmates got one for me for my bday together and it was the cheapest availible laura but i cherished her! Im happy to talk about them ty for the ask ^_^

like i said it's a tiny collection and also pretty basic but looking at them always makes me so happy... and switching out the outfits and reposing them and figuring out the accessories etc its so satisfying each time. and also yes i cut my regular g3 draculaura's hair bc i wanted to see what it would be like and yeah it turned out kinda choppy looking but i like it and i already knew i'll be buying more so i figured i can afford to experiment with at least one. and currently she's decked out in full summer fashion as befitting the season but ill switch her out when the weather starts getting cold again

mm, i think if i were to use g3 dolls for the trigun gang i would use twyla for meryl, and abbey for milly, mostly because of the heights and body shapes of those dolls. although i think draculaura's face mold would be a bit better for meryl, so i would maybe use her as a base instead, since she's still one of the shorter dolls. for vash i think i'd go with deuce, mostly cause i love the smirk on his face mold, but i wouldnt be mad if i used heath instead. wolfwood is the one im having the most trouble with, cause i havent seen any dolls that would have the closest nose shape to his. clawd would have the closest skin tone, but his nose shape is way different, so if i had to sculpt the nose myself i would still end up needing to paint the skin on, so it kind of wouldnt matter what base doll i would use at that point, so itd probably be better to use heath or deuce since they dont have the werewolf fur on the sides of the face or ears like clawd does. i dont know why im putting so much thought into this though cause i absolutely do not have the money to even buy one g3 doll, let alone 4. i just love to think about things 🫶

Just thinking about Draculaura from Monster High. Like, vampires, in realworld lore, dont have reflections in leadlined mirrors. Modern mirrors SHOULD show vampires.

I cant remember the MH lore all too well, but like, I think selfies didnt show her? But what if they did huh? The joy of finding out how she actually looks! The joy of growing into the modern age to find out that modern mirrors show her reflection!

EDIT: SILVERlined mirrors, not leadlined. Silver is "pure" and so vampires (who are impure) would not have a reflection in silver, therefore not in silverlined mirrors

It’s time for another doll review!

today, i’m unboxing venus mcflytrap, the newest in the series of core students for monster high g3. she’s been showing up in targets sporadically, though my targets tend to be late on the pickup so i ended up ordering her for delivery as soon as she was up on the website.

she was delivered a few days early and i sent her to my moms house, so i was dying to go back there to open her up for those few days. here’s her in box! she’s quite tall, though without an abbey to compare im not sure if she’s about the same size as her?

freed from the box! once again the star jar is my prop-up instead of a proper stand, though venus is actually sturdy enough to stand on her own without too much trouble.

of course we’ll take a look at the shoes. g3 loves a gradient boot, and i’m a fan here. the look like concrete planters before they fade to pink, and the teeth are just hilarious.

the vines are rubbery and removable. the bottoms of them have a peg that secures them to the boots.

another detail i wanted a close up on is venus’s molded vine details. i love that g3 is going more in with the monsterey details, and these are awesome. they peek out just above her mismatched legging pieces

the face: venus’s mold and makeup are both great. instead of the shaved side of her g1 version, she has molded braids, which still give her that asymmetrical look. her ear mold also has a leaf look to it as well. her hair is some kind of yarn, i believe. i’m not sure how durable the ends are, though, so i may see if there’s a need to seal them to preserve them. (in addition, one minor defect i have seen people have with their venus rooting is that the larger yarn plugs seem to sometimes tear her scalp slightly, so it may be something to check for if you’re buying her in person.) i’m a very big fan of the black features they’ve added to venus this generation, which i think has been the general consensus on her design that i’ve seen online. her reception has been overwhelmingly positive, and she is the doll that has many people warming up to g3. and id have to agree! i’m a little picky with what dolls i want (unless they’re draculaura dolls, lol) and she was an instant note on my wantlist as soon as those stock photos were out.

accessories! venus comes with a clear open backpack, icoffin, energy bar, water bottle, a hair product bottle (if someone knows specifically what product it is please let me know, im not sure off the top of my head), sunglasses shaped like venus flytraps (of course) and her pet, chewlian.

chewlian is well… definitely a pet! he does come out of the pot, though. i said this in a previous review, i think core lagoonas, but i’m continually baffled and amused at the ability of g3 to turn every pet into a dog or cat version of it. while the pets have never been a draw for me, this is just comical. i think i’ll stick by a previous joke i made that chewlian just ate someone’s dog, and that’s why he looks like that.

the backpack can hold one (1) chewlian or all of her other accessories. something about the way this backpack sits on her or the silhouette or something is awesome to me, i love it a lot. it’s super cute, and i want to display her with the bag instead of storing the backpacks like i usually do.

one last little thing, while i don’t have abbey, my draculauras, or even twyla to compare her too, i think venus is about abbey height, though i think she’s got a slimmer body and hips. here’s her next to frankie. venus also uses the clawed hand mold.

of course, we have to have the obligatory .5 shot

and that’s venus! one last note i want to make is there’s been a lot of fomo around her, but i want to remind people she is going to be widely available as abbey and clawd are. she is going to stick around for a long time compared to other lines, so there’s no need to pay scalper prices for her (i know i say this as someone who bought her as soon as i could, but that was as soon as i could for strictly retail price. i’m just saying i get it, lol.)

i also recognize that that’s a bit america-centric, but she also did start showing up in person in the UK before the US, so hopefully her international release isn’t as frustrating as other lines and characters.

call me blue! i got my first doll (gooliope jellington) in late december 2015, but i began really collecting in earnest starting in 2016, so call it about 3 years 

2) How many MH dolls do you have?

very definitely over 200 probably at this point..... most of them are on display, but a few thrifted and boxed dolls are hidden away 

3) Is Monster High your favorite doll line? Why or why not?

that.... is really hard to answer. it’s definitely the doll line i enioy collecting the most, and i can pretty much say ‘yes, it IS my favorite!’ but there’s that little voice at the back of my head that’s saying ‘but you owe your love of dolls to barbie...’

4) Who’s your favorite MH ghoul?

ohhhh man i love howleen. i love her so much she’s so wonderful. 

5) Favorite Manster?

mm..... hoodude? heath? or.... honestly i do have a huge soft spot in my heart for jackson (even tho he is. a lot. and many of the people i’ve seen who are fans of his are. even more. not everybody tho!!! just. a sad majority....)

6) Do you own any dolls of your favorite ghoul and/or manster? How many?

i own a version of every howleen doll (inlcuding the reboot doll), and it was definitely one of the proudest moments in my collecting, finally having one of each. i have also thrifted at least 3 i think? and i have 2+ repaints of her. i have one heath doll (he was my second/third doll), one jackson that was thrifted, and no hoodude since he was an sdcc exclusive :( but i don’t think hes a great looking doll anyway, like i wasnt expecting hard plastic obviously but i was hoping for more than just a stuffed doll ya feel?

7) Do you own any playsets? If so which one(s)? If not, is there a reason?

i own the school playset (my niece gave it to me when she didnt want it anymore), the catacombs playset (still in box bc i dont have room for it lol), the 13 wishes dj set i guess its called?? and 2 of the fdc playsets. also draculaura’s car and bed, both cleo and frankie’s vanities, and the cam design lab, but idk if any of those count lol 

8) Of the original main ghouls (including Ghoulia, Spectra and Abbey) which is your favorite? Got any dolls of them?

ouch, okay, just make me choose then.... uhhhh i cant really rank them? i guess i would put frankie at the top but shes more default for me than anything else honestly. i dont really care for spectra tho so shes at the bottom whoopsie. also if operetta is also included (which it doesnt say she is but.) then i dont really care for her either tbqh anyway, yea i got several dolls of each lol

9) Favorite character with only one doll release?

off the top of my head im thinkin neighthan, but honestly all of the fusions are good and also all single release doll charas are good. OH i really like cupid too tho and also finnegan 

10) Character with too many dolls (in your opinion?)

spectra. idk i just!!! really dont like her i mean she has nice dolls but i can not make myself care about her. 

11) Any character you would’ve liked to see in a doll line that didn’t make it? (i.e. Lagoona in Sweet Screams or Draculaura in Power Ghouls, etc)

ok. i HATE gil. but i think his design was super good in gsr and i would have loved to see him as a doll. 

12) Any ideas you would’ve liked to see in a doll line?

oh worm ive been thinkin on this for YEARS actually, but get this: “Boogie Fever” - a disco inspired doll line. obv has twyla in it. also what if a line where they were in famous movies - frankie and gooliope in ghostbusters, and then other classics like casablanca and breakfast at tiffanys (i actually hate that movie tbqh but it is a classic) etc 

13) Is there a “grail” MH doll for you? If so do you own it?

mmmmmm pretty much all of the sdcc dolls, but i would love to have the home ick heath some day, since that’s the closest to a sig doll they have for him. i dont have him, but i do have one sdcc exclusive doll (the ghostbusters frankie) 

14) Thoughts on the cancelled Ever After High crossover?

neutral. once upon a time i was excited about it, but honestly i could care less now. part of the problem is that i would want the crossover to go a very specifici way, and part of it is that the eah fans are rabid. 

15) Thoughts on the 2016 reboot faces?

i mean. they are cute! super cute! but. they really arent the monster high i fell in love with, you know?

16) Thoughts on the 2016 “Monster Family” line?

weak. bad. the dolls are cute enough but the line is NOTHING. they didnt even make alivia look like her movie counterpart so like, what was the point. 

17) How bout the SDCC exclusives? What was your favorite? Do you own any?

mmm i LOVE all of the sdcc exclusives but i think the deadfast ghoulia, valentine and whisp, and hexacaiah and robecca are all super good. 

18) How about Amazon exclusives?

ADULT DRACULAURA!!!! god i love her so much she really is so fucking gorgeous and i regret every day that i didnt buy her for like $50 when i got the chance. i do have like 2 of the skelita amazon exclusives tho 

19) Favorite Frankie Stein doll?

im gonna assume for all of these favorite doll questions that the sig look is out for the count bc i love the sigs so much lol. aaaanyway, her classroom look is SUPER cute. also sweet screams

no, but it was the line that got me into collecting in the first place! i collect barbies, eah, dcshg, lalaloopsy, and so many more. basically, if i see a doll i like, i get it (if i have the funds to obviously). honestly i buy/collect anything i like ya know?

mmm... kind of? i thrift them when i see them, but i’m more into ooak dolls now tbqh. there are a few still on my list tho that i would love to buy, fuly complete and all that good stuff.

no real thoughts, because i cant think of any monster doll lines out rn? i mean, im sure there are some, i just cant think of them right now

uhhhhh everywhere??? threir character designs, lore, the fact that in original preboot canon normies and monsters actually know about each other, the lore, the messages it put out about embracing your freaky flaws and all that. monster high is/was just. such a completely amazing and wonderful series.

cleo and see above. but if i have to pick someone different, my fav is lagoona... i love her so much... ive got some dolls of hers but i was never as into her outfits sadly. i just love her character a lot

i love porter and posea both to pieces. AND VANDALA

draculaura but doesnt everyone think that. also amanita didn’t need a second doll. shes only got 2 dolls and thats still too many NFDSLKFSDDSKL especially if theyre gonna put her in a 2 pack with one of the people she left for dead

11) Any character you would’ve liked to see in a doll line that didn’t make it? (i.e. Lagoona in Sweet Screams or Draculaura in Power Ghouls, etc)

LITERALLY ANYONE in sweet screams. sweet screams is SUCH a good line. but you know what woulda been great? is a power ghouls cleo. or a collector’s edition cleo that’s the same grade as collector’s lala. cause i loooove the one we got but also i think a white linen dress would be awesome too. a 2 pack with collector’s deuce maybe

12) Any ideas you would’ve liked to see in a doll line?

i remember coming up w an idea for a series of couples 2 packs based around decades, like 20s cleuce, 70s twyleen, etc i woulda loved to see that but thats completely wish fulfillment

most of em were pretty cute! i liked cleo’s! though they looked a bit wonky sometimes. and i dont like how they made clawdeen look more “white”

horrid idea. horrid execution. the only good thing that came out of it was 1. my headcanon that fangelica is elissabat’s sister, not lala’s and 2. lux and pharrah are cleo’s cousins on her mom’s side. also sandy de nile does not fucking exist
