C: You changed a place to stream from? LYN: Look at this- you clearly don’t care about me, so don’t pretend you do. It’s not worthwhile. C: The sound is small. LYN: How about now? Is it still small? It’s good enough. Let’s not make it too loud, either.

LYN: I just got back to Beijing, so I figured I would stream in my downtime. It’s been too long. So if I have the time to, I will come stream even if it’s just a little. C: It’s been 20+ days. // Almost a month. LYN: It’s like this- I was close to the drama wrap, so there were a lot of scenes to shoot before we finished up. I was busy shooting. Then after the wrap I had a bunch of work to do that had me running all over the place, and on top of all that I had some travel plans. You’ve all seen it- where I went to play (Disney) and whose concert I went to (MBY), and where I’ve been shopping. Just to relax a little, you know? C: Was it fun? LYN: It’s like this.. the people who have been with me longer and know me well all know that I am a... workaholic. If I’m resting for two or three days I’m already out of my wits. I’m dazed. The first two days were pretty fun but later, the more I played, the more helpless I felt. I could only find some happiness within that helpless feeling. C: Hurry and enter into a new crew! LYN: This industry is like this... it doesn’t OWE you. It doesn’t owe me, either. It’s not as if what I say has any weight. Unless I have investors. If you take 4B and hit me with it, to make me the star in a movie or something, then I can enter into a crew at any time. C: You were forcing yourself to play. LYN: I wouldn’t say “forcing” myself; I had other work to do in between. It was work and play- I could relax a little. Recently my dramas have all been one after the other and I didn’t have time to rest, so- C: The sound is low. LYN: Is it? /adjusting the settings/ It might be because I’m wearing the in-ears today, so I’ve made the sound setting lower. If it’s too loud my own ears won’t be able to take it. How is it now, better? It’s good enough- you can turn your phone volume up.

C: The background is pretty! LYN: It’s alright. This is my house in Beijing, the one I’m renting. I’ve debuted for five years already and the time I’ve spent living in Beijing since then does not exceed half a year. I’ve been holed up in drama crews (in Hengdian) or out on business the rest of the time. Honestly, it’s been nonstop. The fengshui of this house is pretty nice, so... so I’ve never stopped the lease. At least whenever I come back to Beijing I’ll always have a place to stay. I just never let the lease expire. It’s a nice place to live.

C: ZXD-laoshi is here! LYN: Welcome, welcome.

LYN: Someone mentioned that they saw I was going to perform at something in a few days... That... I’ll probably be going. Zhang Xiaogang (?) -laoshi was the one who contacted me for that. He said it counts as charity work, and asked if I could participate. It just so happened that I have time, so I agreed. C: Charity? LYN: That’s what he said, but I’m not too clear on the details myself. It’s just an event to promote culture, it’s fine. C: Ning-ge, why is there a nice smell that follows everywhere you go? LYN: Why are you making that sound so mysterious, as if I have a nice body odor to begin with or something?? It’s not worth it. I’m a grown man who sweats- there is no “nice smell”. What can I say, it’s- I bought Givenchy cosmetics and they gifted me with a solid perfume. I’ve been using that. In the hopes that I could... so I don’t... don’t seem too sloppy. It’s nice if I could leave a nice smell behind wherever I go. - t/n: When you ordered cosmetics from LYN’s Givenchy promo, they gifted a solid perfume with your orders. So he ended up acquiring a few. C: Ning-ge, I put it in my bathroom. LYN: /laughs/ So I smell the same as your bathroom. I’m walking around with a “bathroom smell”- Okay. You can choose to use it however you like. It’s acceptable. If you buy some shampoo and use it to wash your leg hairs, that’s okay. How you choose to use a product is entirely up to you. But that doesn’t mean that how you are using it is the intended/proper use.

C: Can we see your Legos? LYN: Why are you looking at my Legos? You can go online and look- it has pictures and videos. What do you want to look at mine for?

C: Hurry and enter a crew! LYN: Obviously this friend is worried that I'l stay at home picking my feet (idling). It’s alright. Don’t worry. I’m a person with a strong sense of business and I have my own plans. When it comes the time for me to tell you about my plans, I will tell you. You don’t need to worry for me, I have my own plans. C: Get some work! LYN: I have work!! Stop pushing me, I know. I have work, I have work. C: You can pick you feet (idle) for a while, too. LYN: It’s okay. They’re not that itchy. LYN: I came back to Beijing for other stuff, too. I have to do some voice-acting for my drama and I’ve gotten started on my album. I’m going to take this time to get my album finished, because I want to hold my concert next year. There are some other events and maybe a variety show I can do with this time, too.

C: Push ALZ. LYN: Go take this up with the two main leads. I’m at a loss here- if they’re not pushing it, then who am I to say anything?? I can’t do it. I’m just trying to blend in with the crowd, here. I can’t help you. - t/n: probably will air after Back from the Brink, though...?

C: Can you hold your concert in the latter half of the year? LYN: Do you think a concert is as easy as a street-side livestream? I can just tap my head for a warm-up and then get straight into it? That won’t do. Concerts take a lot of planning including venue, stage design, dress rehearsals and practices. It’s a process that takes time- at the least three or four months just to prepare. If I start working on it now, I could possibly swing it by October. But in October... I... I might need to film. LYN: Anyways, I see that a lot of other artists are holding their concerts this year. Pretty much every singer. They’re all on tour. I’m a little jealous- they sure can sell tickets. Ant the other thing is that every singer holding a concert has sold out tickets. They’re so amazing, I’m jealous. I was thinking... if they can sell out but then I hold my concert and I can’t?? That’d be a slap in the face. So I thought “forget it”. Let’s not take that risk. I’ll let them hold their concerts and get you in the mood while I work on my album, then hold my concert next year. It’s not as if I can hold a concert and then start singing my OSTs. I mean, it’s not that I can’t do it, but having a concert without an album to back it up isn’t particularly... reliable. I want to make my album and release it, then hold my concert after. That’s the general process, so you can rest assured. I will hold my concert. C: Ning-ge, I’m afraid I won’t be able to get a ticket. LYN: Don’t mess with me. There aren’t many singers out there who dare to say they CAN sell out a concert. There aren’t many, though there are those few amazing ones. I, for one, don’t dare to say that I can. I don’t believe you won’t be able to get one. It’s a tour, right? So about 10 stops or so. Of these 10 stops, you’re bound to get tickets for at least ONE of the cities, right? It’s not as if you’re NOT going to watch at any of the 10? You’ll be able to get one, don’t worry. Don’t make it out to seem as if I’m such a hot commodity, and my tickets will be hard to get. You don’t need to create such a competitive atmosphere. We’ll do it the standard way. If you like watching concerts, you can come watch. If there are people out there who are interested in LYN, you can come watch as well. C: Where can I buy tickets? LYN: Next year! I’m holding my concert next year- you can’t buy the tickets yet. You won’t be able to. C: Ning-ge, you don’t have enough awareness of yourself. LYN: I just have TOO much awareness. I know all too well. Just do it the normal/standard way, and that’s enough. We can’t be too self-absorbed.

C: Come to Zibo. LYN: If I have the time, I’d really like to go take a look. Eat some bbq or something. I can go shop around.

C: What’s wrong with watching the concert at all 10 stops? Who are you trying to look down on?? LYN: No- I’m not looking down on anyone, and you don’t need to be here showing off your wealth. If you CAN watch all 10 stops, then you’re impressive. That’s all I can say. But you still don’t need to promote how wealthy you are.

C: If I go to the concert, can I wear a wedding dress? LYN: Whatever you decide to wear is up to you- that’s your freedom of choice. As long as you won’t be hurt by it, you can wear whatever you want. That’s your freedom- you can wear a wedding dress if you want to. LYN: The first year I held my concerts a lot of friends wore wedding dresses to come see me. They bought it at the time for the occasion, but I don’t know if they can still fit into them now? If it’s something you bought and can still wear, you can wear it again.

C: Resolve the issue of the discount coupons. LYN: It’s like this- when I am holding my concerts and you want to buy tickets, you will buy them as normal. Let’s say the ticket is 480RMB. You’ll buy the ticket as normal. When you reach the concert venue, find a staff member... tell them you have a coupon... and they’ll return 5RMB to you. You can use the discounts then. As for the ticket, you will purchase that at full price because that’s part of the ticketing system- and those are at set prices. We weren’t able to hold the concert, but the tickets were already sold. A lot of you haven’t even returned those tickets for a refund. I’m guessing that some portion of those who bought tickets back then are now no longer my fan. /sigh/

C: I’m a student-fan, is there a discount? LYN: I don’t know. Usually when I do concerts it’s in collaboration with a company. I don’t think we’ve ever discussed before if there was any extra benefit for students. I’m not clear. When the time comes, I can ask.

C: How much are tickets for the stage? LYN: Meaning you want to be ON the stage? If you’re on the stage it counts as a special performance. I’LL give YOU money. You can come dance.

LYN: I’m not going to discuss this with you anymore. You can find out what seating options there are when ticket sales open up. There’s no point in asking me if you can bring your kid, and if children’s tickets are half-price. Don’t ask me these things, I don’t know. Concerts typically have standard rules.

LYN: The other day- you all know- I went to MBY’s concert, didn’t I? It was in Shanghai and I figured if I had some time I would go. I quite like his songs, too. This was the first time in my life watching a concert. I’ve been to them before, of course, but at those I was the one singing on stage. It was my first time watching one and I thought it was pretty mysterious. I don’t have any prior experience. I didn’t know where to pick up my ticket or even enter the venue. I found someone to buy the tickets and then after that I didn’t know where to go to pick them up. After I got into the venue there was even a place to buy drinks and popcorn! I was thinking it was like going to watch a movie! You can even buy popcorn, popcorn chicken?? It was pretty nice, so I was relieved and decided to buy some. I bought two buckets of popcorn and two buckets of popcorn chicken. You can watch a concert while eating popcorn- what a happy thing! It’s like watching a movie. LYN: But after I got to the seating area I found out that no one was eating anything! Either they were dancing/moving along or singing along. They were all MBY’s fans, right? Though I know there were also my fans there, too. /stares into the camera/ But the point is that everyone was enjoying the concert. I thought it would be weird if I wasn’t swaying the light-stick and was just sitting there eating my popcorn. I didn’t know. I figure if I were closer to the back, I could probably have eaten but I was in the front. And I am very tall, so there were some who recognized me. I couldn’t be there- watching my friend sing on stage while I sat in the audience eating popcorn! Let alone the popcorn, I didn’t even dare to drink water! I felt like if I drank a mouthful of water while he was singing it would seem as if I didn’t respect the stage.

LYN: It was fun overall, though. His songs are all very nice, so it was pleasing to the ears. Not bad at all. Then, when I was leaving, I thought it would be better for me to leave earlier. I mean- you can’t leave the whole thing early- but I thought it would be aright to leave after the last performance and the singer bowed and left the stage (before the encore). But he bowed and left but no one else was leaving! The seating was tight and I was thinking that he probably left back to his hotel already by that point! But these friends were all still there waiting with no intention of leaving and there was music playing in the venue. I was thinking, “Why isn’t anyone leaving?? What are you doing- planning to stay the night??” In any case, I needed to leave. I was hungry. XD I wanted to go back to my hotel to eat my popcorn, because if you leave it for too long it turns stale. I stood up. LYN: Of course, there are going to be people who recognized me and called me “Liu Yuning!” That’s fine, that’s normal. But there were some who shouted “Lao-da!”* !! I looked at them and thought to myself, “Ah... I see how it is.” *[t/n: only long-time fans of his call him that, and here they are at a MBY concert...] LYN: I support you going to watch concerts, but just in case- for the next time. If we meet again like that, it’s going to be awkward. I don’t know how I should reply to you. My fans and I, meeting up at another idol’s concert?? That was an interesting feeling that I don’t wish to experience again. C: Don’t call me out like that! LYN: That’s exactly right. I meant you. LYN: I’m kidding. You can all go watch concerts, that’s fine. I just don’t want it (meeting his fans at someone else’s concert) to develop into a habit.

C: You even spilled your cola all over people. LYN: ... /thinking/ Did that happen? I didn’t know. If I spilled soda on you, I apologize. If you want compensation for your pants, you can contact my studio and we will compensate- within reason. I really didn’t know. Someone called me out just now about it. If you need it washed or compensation for it, send a private message to my studio.

C: Lao-da, it seems like you haven’t changed your clothes in three days. LYN: /thinking/ What’s it to you?? Does this have anything to do with you? I buy three of the exact same outfit to wear- is that acceptable? I wear a new one every day, it just looks the same as the others. What do you care?!

LYN: Another thing is, someone saw me wearing long sleeves (to Disney?) and asked me if I was hot. What’s it to you whether I am hot or not? If I were hot, I would have taken the blazer off. I wasn’t hot! Why were you asking?? LYN: As actors we’re wearing three-four layers for hours a day when shooting for a guzhuang drama. We can take that, so why would we be hot in a t-shirt and blazer? Right? C: Why weren’t you hot? LYN: I just got used to it, I guess. We’re wearing four to five layers on a normal basis anyway. Also, I’m afraid I would get too tan- I got SO tanned in the previous crew. So in order to prevent that, I wore long sleeves so my arms stay nice and pale.

C: The drama costumes are washed every day? LYN: Pretty much. The outer layer isn’t washed as often, but the innermost one is washed almost everyday. We’re sweating too much to just let it be.

C: You can be tanner; you’ll look healthier. LYN: What you’re saying isn’t unreasonable, but I still advise all of you to wear sunscreen. Sun IS good for you but it will speed up the aging process of the skin. I would suggest sunscreen. Right now, I’m most afraid of aging. I keep hearing this song, called “当你老了 (When You Are Old).” ~When you’re old and you hair has turned white~ LYN: Let me see if I can find it. I’ll sing it for you. -- 当你老了 (When You Are Old) LYN: I don’t really know the song too well. You get the drift.

C: Why is there an added echo? LYN: I don’t know what you mean by that. Do you mean that my stream right now is a singing competition? Everything has to be REAL and have that pure/raw sound?

C: Ning-ge, it’s almost time for my senior high school entrance exam. LYN: ?? I saw someone say that a few days ago. To everyone who is taking their driver’s license exam, or whatever other certification- I wish you all success. C: College entrance exam. LYN: Oh. I wish everyone taking their college entrance exam to have a good score! Let’s all reach for the sky. You “amaze the world with a single, brilliant feat.” (不鸣则已，一鸣惊人) C: Ning-ge, my daughter is taking her college entrance exam. LYN: Seems like my fans also comprise of older people who are heads of households. I hope your daughter does well. Jiayou, jiayou.

C: I’ve finally caught up to a live stream. LYN: My streams are easy to catch. Well, okay- Maybe not this month. Someone told me I haven’t streamed in 20+ days. I hope you can understand. I told you before that when I made it back to Beijing I would stream until you were sick. Look at this background I’ve set up for you. C: My grandkid is taking the college entrance exam. LYN: ?? It’s not that I don’t believe you! I don’t NOT believe that I have a fan who is old enough to have a grandkid entering college... but... I have a strong suspicion that you’re trying to curse someone. There are a lot of friends here who were saying “I’m taking the NCEE” and now here’s someone who is saying, “Yes, yes. My grandkid is taking the NCEE.” When you put it that way, it seems like you’re joking.

C: What’s your next drama, can you spoil it a little? LYN: My next step is to make my album- didn’t I already tell you? What else do you want me to spoil? What do I know? I can’t spoil anything. LYN: Right now- with singing and with acting- I have to like the role, the script, or feel like it suits me before I accept a role or song. I have to like it first, and that’s why I accept. If I don’t like it, I won’t accept the job. So I’m waiting for the right one- if it’s something I don’t like then I don’t see the need to force myself into doing it.

LYN: If you’re watching my stream, try to do it with headphones if you can. You might not be able to hear very clearly with just the phone’s speakers. They’re not very defined so you can’t hear me clearly. Wear headphones if you can. I guarantee you’ll hear everything loud and clear. I’m also wearing headphones- what you hear is exactly what I am hearing. It’s like we’re listening in the same space- everyone’s happy.

C: Why can’t people hear clearly? Is it because your dictation doesn’t pass? LYN: Are you even my fan?? You must not be. How could you come and make trouble for me?? I’m just average. Super basic. I’m didn’t study to be a performer, after all. It’s already taken me a lot of effort to speak Standard Mandarin properly. My dialogue is no good, so you needn’t go around promoting it either. The fact that I’ve received good roles is good enough. It’s good enough to take a script someone’s written and be able to act it out. We don’t need to discuss any deep experiences. C: Then, Ning-ge. Between your lines, your acting, or your visuals, you have to promote ONE of them. LYN: But WHY do I have to?? I don’t know. What do you mean. Why do I HAVE TO push one of them? I don’t think I can get away with bragging about my visuals. If I brag about (the Chinese word is also used for “blow”) my visuals it will sound like this kazoo. Don’t even mention acting- why? Because I’m someone who keeps telling you he’s working on his second album. I’m trying to hold a concert next year, what do I need to push my acting for? Acting skill is not something you attain by boasting; it’s something that the viewers can feel. It doesn’t need promoting because viewers can see it. My lines is even more out of the question. I’m from Dongbei, so when I speak I am bound to have a heavy accent. I don’t want to promote any part. Can’t we be just a normal person? A normal person, watching shows normally. Why do I need to push for something? There’s no need. If you’re good, people can see it. If you’re not then there’s no use in forcing it. C: Promote your height. LYN: This, I can do! :) // There’s nothing to brag about, though. I was just born this way- it’s a matter of genes, not something that you can attain by putting in any effort. It’s not like I can say that LYN, by putting in his blood, sweat, and tears and sleeping only two hours a night, has made himself grow to 1.89m tall. It’s just something you’re born with- this is in your genes; it’s something you’re born with, not something you can attain with hard work. You don’t need to put any effort into your height. C: Does “sings well” count? LYN: “Sings well”? There are so many other people out there who sing much better than I do. I’m being serious. I’m not just saying that to be nice. It’s because I understand all too well, and the longer you’re in the business of something, the more you will understand. There are so many people who can sing well. You can’t get to this place just because of how amazing you are. The first thing is to have a good life (fate), and the second thing is to meet good people. That’s the way you can get to this position, not because you are amazing. This is something I’ve always been aware of. LYN: This is very straightforward. Think about it- do you think I sing much better than I did five years ago? I don’t sing much better, but I definitely have improved. But why was no one requesting me to sing OSTs five years ago? Because I didn’t have you, then. Right? But I can’t say that I can sing OSTs BECAUSE of you, rather it’s because of you that more and more people recognize me and I have the opportunity to accept these types of jobs. C: Promote your fans. LYN: I can do that. My fans are so amazing. Of course! What else can I say? You’re the best. C: Compliment your fans. LYN: That’s not necessary. I haven’t drifted, but you have? I told you not to go out and promote me, but now you want to go out and promote yourselves?? We have to promote something, huh? There’s no rhyme or reason behind it. We’re all saxophone lovers; we all love to “blow” (brag). LYN: There’s nothing to brag about. I don’t want to say that my fans are better than anyone else’s, but you certainly are different. These few years I think we’ve developed a good method of communication. It’s already set, so it’ll be hard for other people to replicate.

LYN: At first I wanted to stick her in the cabinet. I wanted to put her in there and have her sit with the rest of the figures so you could see her. But then I was afraid she would be scared to death if I did that. So I didn’t put her in there.

C: How come you take her with you everywhere you go? LYN: What are you saying? If I don’t take her with me, where do you want me to put her? Throw her away?? Of course, I have to bring her with me.

C: Was Disney fun? LYN: It was quite fun. I honestly wanted to go after my previous drama had wrapped. I had wanted to go after YNGS- to relax, have fun, and shop around. But then what happened- I broke my foot. So I figured I would go after ZY wrapped. It was fun. (Shanghai Disney)

C: You’re trending. LYN: My stream is trending? I don’t believe it. My stream couldn’t possibly be trending, I’m not worthy.

C: Why didn’t you stream at Disney? LYN: I already told you last time that Disney doesn't allow live streaming. If you wanted to stream it requires a lot of preparation- especially as an artist. Shanghai Disney has a large amount of people, so we don’t want to take the risk of any accidents happening- even though I’m not popular to that extent, yet. But there’s still the risk, right? So a stream wasn’t quite possible. We’ll have to see, later. Disney has had a lot of people lately, so we’ll see if there’s a time when there’s less people and I can try to stream then. It’s still a collaboration, after all.

Not only do you have requirements for my clothing, now you come to my stream to request dishes? A lot of friends don’t know what you mean by “napa cabbage”- I had bought a shirt once and wore it during one of my streams. I ended up looking too much like a napa cabbage. It was green and yellow- just like a cabbage, so my friends started calling it the “cabbage shirt”. If you want to see it, I’m sure there are hotpot restaurants around your house, right? It’s like you wear something purple, and pair it with other purple things from head to toe. Or a full set of pink/green/yellow. I’m not too clear on the concept.

C: If you’re not going to wear it, give it to me. LYN: Well, you see- this house here in Beijing is rented but normally when I’m filming it’s empty. Do you want to come live in it, too? I’ll pay the water and electricity bills, as well as the air conditioner. Do you want to come live here? Since I’m not living in it anyway. Is that what you mean? Anything I don’t want, I have to give you?? The salary is fixed. But why these songs? It’s because- this is an industry secret- it’s because... the JD event was airing on Tencent. That’s why, the songs I sang had to be from dramas that had aired on Tencent. If I wanted to sing “Searching for You” it would have to be at an iQIYI event. LYN: It’s reasonable, isn’t it? LYN: I saw on some video platform a clip of my dubbing for Jiu Yuan (CLJ donghua). Someone posted a clip of that and I saw in the comments someone said, “This person didn’t do a very good job. It seems like this person doesn’t have enough presence.” I just want to say that I probably wouldn’t do the voice-acting as good as most other people. Compared to a professional voice actor, I am lacking by thousands of miles. But “lacking presence” I can’t admit to- because I’m a singer! Another comment was that there was absolutely no feeling behind the voice. They couldn’t grasp any feelings by watching the character. Friends, I was voice acting for a monk. LYN: Didn’t you see that he was a monk? He can’t HAVE feelings. I’m able to be deeply emotional. I’m just an Emotional Boy, I am. But the guy’s a monk, so I couldn’t say anything with too much feeling. Everything for him is internal, you should be able to grasp just the slightest bit of warmth from his strict words and outwardly appearance. He’s a monk- a god of war- you can’t expect him to appear and say, “Dongfang Qingcang, have you gone mad?!” You wanted it like that, with feeling? “You can’t do this!” There’s no way we could have made him emote. But this year for sure, at least one of my dramas is going to air. The probability is around July. As for which one or possibly how many- that I don’t know. It’s about time, though. LYN: Wait, no. Don’t have too high expectations of me. You’re supposed to lower your expectations. That way when you watch you can think that I my acting is acceptable or even good. Don’t have high expectations, because a few of these dramas were filmed about two years ago now. At that time I was... I wasn’t good enough. Of course I’m not any good now, but it’ll definitely be better than back then. LYN: Eh? What did I film before BYOL? TXJ...? It was TXJ, right? I think BYOL definitely opened up my understanding towards performing. Then when I got into the YNGS crew, I had a different experience entirely. It was really fulfilling. I started getting the hang of it. No matter what you’re doing- if you do it a thousand times- you’re going to become more familiar and fluent in it. Once you’ve filmed one thousand dramas I’m sure you would have gotten the hang of it by then. After YNGS, I felt like I had some growth and was able to enter into the ZY crew with that newly gained experience. After ZY I feel like I’ve grown even more. LYN: If there was any sort of change, I think the most of it came when I was filming for BYOL. YNGS is more like the previous me, but more matured. With ZY I matured even more. You just have to keep improving. Also, previous to BYOL, I was only playing supporting roles so had comparatively less scenes. With ZC I had 190...? Around 200 scenes. For TXJ I had 190. 191, but after it’s all edited I’m sure they will delete some of my scenes. There’s also ALZ. I really don’t remember how many scenes I had but - I just want to say, because I’m sure when it airs that people will come to curse me out in troves- I did not have any ability to get myself additional scenes. Please don’t go around saying that they added scenes for me. I don’t have the right- who do you think I am?? LYN: Other than my own fans, who’s watching ALZ for me anyway? Right? So don’t say I got additional scenes- I only act out what I get in the script. I can’t add anything- I don’t have the right/qualification to. For that drama, too, I really seriously adhered to my duty of only playing what was outlined in the script.

C: What is your “duty”? LYN: The thing is with actors- at least how I look at the role... /thinks about it/ I don’t want to talk about this with you. I really want to share, but I’m afraid to say the wrong thing. So I won’t talk about it. I have my own method for looking at the roles- which ones I want, which ones I accept, which I think are good opportunities. I have my own way of looking at them. LYN: For Luo Mingxi in ALZ, I just want to say I acted well within my duties. I did as best as I could with my limited capabilities. I didn’t steal away anyone else’s limelight. Supporting characters all have their own function. You all watch dramas so you know- some characters are there to support the main character- to indulge them. I told you about this scenario the last time, didn’t I? LYN: If there are two actors at the scene of the crime... High chance the support role will say, “How did this person die? Who killed them?” and then it’s turn for the main character to say, “Based on the condition of the body I infer that this must have been done by someone they know.” The support comes in again, “Huh? How do you know? You only looked at the body for a minute, but you already know who did it?” The main character will reply, “That’s right. You should learn from me more often. The killer couldn’t have gotten far. Send patrols out within a 5 mile radius. We need to do a traffic stop at all major cross sections.” The support: “There’s no way! The body had been in rigor mortis for so long. The killer would have gotten away a long time ago!” The main: “Rest assured, I won’t be wrong. Trust me. Just do as I say.” And then a while later the culprit has been caught, and the support comes back and says, “I can’t believe it. How did you know they didn’t get farther than 5 miles away? Tell me about it- how did you figure it out?” You know? The main theme is to act as a foil.

C: This supporting role is so expressive! LYN: No! There are so many different supporting character types. I was only describing one of them; the point is that through their lines you can tell what their function is. Everything they say is to instigate the main to say their next lines. For the most part. I’m not saying that ALL their lines work to serve this purpose. Just some of them. The theme is “companionship.”

C: If acted well, even small roles can shine. LYN: Naturally! That’s definitely the case. I’m able to have so many fans now precisely because they saw me as a supporting character and ended up liking me. I can stand behind that statement.

LYN: Just think about what would happen if the supporting character didn’t cooperate. Let’s use the same scenario as before. - Main: Based on the condition of the body I infer that this must have been done by someone they know. - Support: Oh. You’re right. LYN: ... /giggles/ - M: I’m sure the culprit couldn’t have gotten farther away than a 5 mile radius. - S: Ok, got it. LYN: .. Now’s the time for the main to start getting anxious. - M: Aren’t you going to ask my why?? LYN: That’s why you still have to go through the whole process. Otherwise this part of the drama would have flopped.

C: Ning-ge, I fell into the pit (fandom) because I saw ZY reuters. LYN: You can fall in just by seeing reuters? Are you talking about the ugly ones or the pretty ones? According to my calculation, about 70% of reuters of me are of the ugly variety. Not even ZY, the other dramas, too. 70% of all reuters of me is the ugly kind. If you can see those and STILL fall into this pit... Sis’- you’ve got good taste. :) LYN: (Fell in) By seeing reuters... in this case, I guess I have to thank all the editors out there who have photoshopped the photos, and to the content creators who put so many filters on the video clips that even I don’t recognize myself in them. That includes the music, too. I saw some videos and you’ve added in music and then bring in the slo-mo- I saw it and was thinking to myself, “Eh? I actually look decent!” I think those accounts that most often take photos/videos of me really have a good aesthetic. Truly, not bad. LYN: Of course, it’s like this- many of you may have an interest in me FOR NOW. We don’t call it “falling into the pit” here. We call it “winning the lottery.” We’re different, here. Calling it “falling into the pit” sounds a bit unlucky. It’s like you were unwilling. Because it’s a pit- if you fall in, you’re going to want to try to climb out. But if you “win the lottery” then you can enjoy the benefit to its fullest.

C: Ning-ge, in this case it seems like you often see the reuters, yourself. LYN: /sigh/ I also see them, ok? In this “big-data” world, you know- whatever app you’re using, they’re bound to recommend you articles based on your interests. Who am I most interested in? Of course, it’s going to be myself. So when I open up my apps the first-fourth posts I see are about myself. I have to see them. Do you think I dare to NOT have an interest in them? LYN: I’m interested. Some of the videos really look so nice, I was so amazed by them that I even “liked” them.

LYN: I feel like everyone needs to get the chance to meet, at least once. For a period of time there were a huge quantity of ugly photos of me, right? Then by chance, I ran into that group of paparazzi. I went and asked them if they could delete the extra ugly photos for me. I think that all humans have feelings, right? Even if they don’t know me, if I came up to them and made that request of them, they would have had to feel SOMETHING, right? “LYN asked me, so maybe I can release less of those pictures.” Right- I think that’s an okay thing to ask of them. LYN: Another night I returned to the hotel and headed for the elevator. When the doors opened there was a man inside. He greeted me, “Ning-ge, hello!” but I didn’t know him. I wouldn’t recognize him- because he’s a paparazzi, right? They always take pictures of actors, so they know who we are but for us- the distance is probably a bit far, so we can’t see their faces. I didn’t recognize him, so I just thought it was another hotel patron. I said, “Hello.” He replied, “You finished up work? It’s been hard on you.” and I replied, “Ah, yes.” I didn’t even know who he was! But then it got to the second floor- we live on the same floor. We got out of the elevator and he said, “Ning-ge, what did you think of the photos the other day? I was the one who took the pictures of you on the horse. I saw that the reception was great- you even made it on the trending topics list.” All of a sudden I understood who he was. X’D I said, “Oh! You took very good pictures. Thank you so much.” What else could I say?! C: He outed himself. LYN: No, there’s none of that. He wasn’t even afraid of me! I don’t even have the right to do anything about him, either. It’s the job of the production crew to stop/hinder them from leaking photos/videos, not mine. I’m just the actor- all I need to do is film the drama. Also, why would I need to make an enemy of the paparazzi? There’s absolutely no need. I’m very clear on this: if you want to take handsome pictures of LYN it’s very hard but if you want to take ugly ones, you can shoot however you want. Right? If you want to take nice photos, you have to find the right angles, right pose, and get the timing perfectly. If you want to take ugly photos- you are free to click the shutter at will. LYN: I’m not approving of their actions, but that’s their way of making a living. We just need to have mutual respect. Just- as long as they don’t do anything that hurts me. Other than that, it’s alright. It’s fine. LYN: I was thinking- since he’s living in the same hotel as I am- “Do paparazzi have so much money??” I heard that it was hard to get a reservation in this hotel and that it’s very expensive! Paparazzi have so much money?? He can live on the same floor as me- that’s amazing! LYN: It’s his line of work- as long as he’s on the right path. The “path” can be categorized into “method” as well as “morality.” Some people don’t have morals, and there’s just nothing you can do about it. You can try to stay away and ignore those ones, and that’s all. If they’re insane, just steer clear and you’ll be ok. There doesn’t need to be this silent war between us. If we can take some time to just make that request of them- not to release any ugly pictures- then we’re all good. At the least, I hope it can be like that.

C: Is your foot completely healed now? LYN: I haven’t gotten it checked, but it should be fine. It’s been a long time already- 5 months. It should be healed, but I haven’t checked. I came back to Bejing to take care of some things but later I’ll have to find some time to do a physical. I haven’t done one in about three years. C: Have you been working out lately? LYN: I’ve been planning to start up again. I should have about a month of a “regular” schedule- so for that month I am planning to work out crazily. I bought a whole bunch of stuff in preparation. I figure by the end of this year I will be able to keep my promise to you. I’ll let you see- post a picture of my abs. The end of this year. C: Show them on stream. LYN: /sigh/ It’s like this. Maybe I’m a little old but I don’t have the same mindset as some of the young guys you might like. First, because I don’t have a good figure to begin with. Sometimes for the dramas, they’d need me to- just the slightest bit- wear a little less. Or maybe not wear anything at all. The drama needs you to... wear less. Now, this wouldn’t be a problem if I had any muscles to show, but I just look like a rack of ribs. Some friends don’t like eating ribs... That’s why, sometimes, I have a strong opposition to showing skin. Maybe wait until I have actually trained myself into having muscles, and then I’ll just show it all in a drama. LYN: There’s another situation, that just requires the upper chest- like in a bath. They’re not going to do the whole chest, right? Usually it’s around shoulder level and up. Sometimes I wanted to tell the director, can’t I just wear some swim clothes? You know- wearing clothes in the bath is a reasonable thing! Don’t people wear clothes in the hot springs, too? There’s no rule that says you have to be naked when taking a bath. But I suggested it to the director and he vetoed it, and said less was better. I was thinking to myself- have I already fallen to the point where I need to “sell my body” to get people to watch my dramas? I don’t like this feeling. I feel like I should be using my talent to attract people, not my body. That’s just not right. It’s hard for me to accept.

LYN: But! I’m going to start working out now. After I’ve trained enough, I’ll accept a drama where I’m just naked the whole way through! I won’t wear a top through the whole thing! The production can save money on hiring a costume designer. I just need pants and I can go start acting. C: Isn’t THAT selling your body? LYN: If I go the whole drama topless, then that doesn’t count as selling my body. That’ll be... reserving the whole store.

LYN: But if I do a limited release- for a vinyl- you can go buy that. At the very least you’ll have a product. I don’t want to release a song- or ten of them- and have you pay for each one. That’s not necessary. I might release a vinyl album. At least, that’s what I was thinking. Some people might have the first one, and then you could also get the second. Start a collection that way. I want to make a vinyl for each album I release. That was my plan.

If it gets popular and makes a lot of money or if it flops and doesn’t make any- that doesn’t have anything to do with me. I am only the performer, who was asked to take part in the creation of the song. The profits and losses are not my problem. My only responsibility is singing the song, then I’m done. The production gave me a portion of money, I sang. If I want to sing the song again on some program/stage, /I/ have to let /them/ know. LYN: You wouldn't have guessed it, huh? It’s not an industry rule, per se, but more of a copyright thing. I’ve sung a lot of OSTs, right? Let’s say I was invited to a gala and they want me to sing a song and I agree. I’ll ask them if they have any recommendations, and they suggest “Searching for You.” I’ll tell them, “Sure. No problem. Either you let the production company/copyright owner know, or I will.” You need to let them know, before you sing it. If they come back and tell me I’m not allowed to sing it, then I can’t. The platforms and companies I’ve been working with have all been very nice about it, though. If I tell them I would like to sing one of their songs, they usually let me. LYN: You’ll find that a lot of singers have songs that they are unable to sing. Even though it’s their own song, if they want to sing it at some event they can’t. It’s simply a copyright issue.

LYN: Lately they’ve been working on the YNGS OST and they’ve found so many songs for it. They take the music part very seriously. I had already agreed- it was my pleasure- to sing two songs for the drama. I chose the two I wanted- they all sound very nice- but I chose two I liked the most. I was thinking I would take this time to get those two songs recorded.

C: How are you going to spend 6/1 Children’s Day? LYN: I’m recording on June 1st! I’m going to work on my album. I’ll be working! I’m at such an old age already, why would I be celebrating Children's Day? If I look into the mirror that morning, at my crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles, and tell myself, “Happy Children’s Day”, I’ll feel quite foolish.

C: When is YNGS going to air? LYN: I can’t tell you that. You can stop asking. But it’s going to be sooner than you think.

C: OMG! I came late! LYN: XD I’m going to stop streaming soon, you came too late. That’s why, if you’re watching my stream and you have not yet subscribed to my weibo you should do so. C: Even if I type something you don’t reply to me. LYN: There are so many different comments scrolling past and they go quite quickly. I need to choose which ones to reply to. If there are questions that are not convenient for me to respond to, or if I don’t feel like taking up that topic of conversation, I won’t. Some comments are clearly traps- no way I’d ever respond to those. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking.

C: I’ve subscribed a long time ago but it never notifies me. LYN: You have to turn the notifications on, then.

C: I’m nervous about the NCEE. LYN: That’s normal. When you come to points in your life that have a strong impact on how the rest of it will go, you’re inevitably going to be nervous about it. It’s completely normal. Even me- when I went to see MBY’s concert the other day, I was nervous. I was sitting in the car, and my staff asked me what was wrong. They felt like I was sitting there not moving or speaking. I told them I didn’t know why, but I was feeling nervous. They asked me, “You’re WATCHING the concert, what do you have to be nervous about?” I told them, “I don’t know. I just feel inexplicably nervous. I’ve never been to a concert before, this is my first one, so I’m nervous. I don’t know if this is excitement, or what.” So that’s normal. WATCHING a concert made me nervous! I wasn’t even the one singing. LYN: I’m nervous for my own concerts too. When it hasn’t started yet, but you’re all seated.... I’m actually already there behind the stage. I can take a sneaking peek at you. I can see how full the venue is, and you’re all in there, showing... how much you love me, let’s say. All shouting/screaming. Someone takes the lead with the fan motto- just all shouting. One or two minutes straight is already impressive, but I felt like you continued for 10 minutes. I felt like your eyes were going to turn bloodshot (from the strain). I know that the fans do that to show me that they’re there, that they came to support me, that they’re my friends and they want me to do well. But when I hear you all shouting like that it makes me nervous. The first song is always the most nerve-wracking. Once I get past the first one, then everything after is okay. Once the second song starts I start to acclimate- I start to relax and play around and get into it. But the first song is always nerve-wracking.

LYN: The opening song to my concert- this song (人造卫星情人). I can say that out of all my songs, this one is the hardest. I always sing this song first, but at the start I haven’t quite warmed up my vocals yet. Whenever I get to the high note- every single time- as soon as it hit this point I feel like my brain is lacking oxygen. At my first concert, after singing this part, I felt like I was soon going to be on my knees. I was dizzy. I felt like I couldn’t stand straight anymore. If I sang one more word, I would be on my knees. I would have passed out on the stage. LYN: I sang that note and then immediately closed my eyes- to rest/recollect. I could feel my heart beating. I recovered for a beat- then continued with the song. Every single time. This first song feels like it’s going to take me out. Let me find which part it is... -- 人造卫星情人 (Satellite Lover) - /sings the first verse/, “Not this part, this part’s okay.” - /gets to the end of the first chorus/, “It’s this part right here.” - /end of the rap portion/. “By this part I normally have recovered.” LYN: Generally I’ve recovered by this part. So- to that person who said they were nervous about the NCEE: we’re all the same. When things get serious, we all get nervous. But it’s a good thing. It will keep your senses sharp. When you’re taking the test too, a little nerves is okay. But not too much- don’t make yourself so sick you can’t even hold your pencil straight. In that case, it’s a little too much. Minor nerves, as long as they don’t affect your normal behavior/action too much, is okay. LYN: Don’t be nervous. Of course, even though I SAY that, it’s not going to help you. Humans are just like that. If you’re nervous about something and someone tells you not to be, you can’t hear them. But they still have to say it, even if you’re not going to listen. If you’re going to be nervous, you’re going to be nervous. There’s no way to dissipate the nerves.

- /someone asking about his concert again/ LYN: You must not have seen the first half of the stream. I already said I would aim to hold my concert next year. The rest of this year will be spent... doing some dramas. I’m in Beijing right now to work on my album. I’ll finish that up and release it, and be ready to hold my concert next year. I have to do a tour. For a singer, a concert is a must.

C: How long have you been streaming? LYN: Let me take a look. Two and a half hours. Two hours and thirty-four minutes. I have a timer. When the viewer count hits 3k, I’ll leave.

LYN: /about the concert/ I’ll probably be at the main cities, like Guangzhou-Beijing-Shenzhen... maybe not necessarily. I might choose between Guangzhou or Shenzhen. It’ll be around the same as the last tour. Chengdu or Chongqing. It’s always a pick between two. Either Liaoning, Dalian, or Shenyang. The main thing is the venue. Which city I end up choosing depends on which venue is open at the time, because there are lots of other music festivals and concert tours going on as well. You have to compete for venues. LYN: It’s not as simply as you might think, say one person uses it one day and another the next. You need to reserve the venue for a period of time to do stage settings and design. Everything needs to be changed. From start to finish it takes several weeks. Just to set it up would take at least a week. You need to do the setting, the design, testing the mechanics, making sure everything is safe, etc. All of this needs time. It’s not as if you reserve it for a concert for the single day. You have to set it all up yourself. Anyway, we’ll see. LYN: The other reason why I don’t want to hold my concert this year is because I want a few of my dramas to air first. I filmed so many dramas, I want at least some of them to air. If one of them airs it can gain me at least 200 new fans, right? Let’s think broadly. One drama, 200 fans. I have six dramas yet to air, so that means there are 1200 new fans. Isn’t that amazing? Then I won’t have to worry about my ticket sales.

LYN: I sang the OST for Back from the Brink. This drama is a pretty good watch, so if you haven’t yet you can check it out. I went to record for the variety program and also happened to meet up with Zhou Ye-laoshi and got to know her. -- 风吹过 (The Passing Wind)

C: Ning-ge, do you have anything else special going on today? LYN: It’s 11:30p, what “special” event COULD I have? My “special event” is that later when I wash my hair... I shouldn’t wash it too aggressively because for once I dyed my hair. If I wash too much it might lose its color. LYN: It’s 11:30p, what would be going on? Don’t tell me it’s your birthday. You think that’s special?

C: You’ve started to lose color? LYN: /nods/ At first when I dyed it, it was more of an ash color. After about two days it changed to a different color already. After another ten days... Visibly gray can only last about a week. After that it starts to turn yellow. If you want to keep the color, you have to go dye it again. Hair is troublesome.

C: It’s my daughter’s birthday. LYN: Then, I wish your daughter a happy birthday.

C: You hairline is a little high. LYN: ... A lot of artists will hear you say that and be angry. I don’t feel anything. /sarcastic/ My hairline isn’t high. My hairline is here. /gestures to the middle of his forehead/ There’s no hair here because I shaved it. My natural hairline is bangs. It starts growing from here. But if it grows too low it looks ugly. It makes my face look short. So I use a razor and shave it clean. If you think it’s too high then next time I will let it grow out. It can grow lower. LYN: You think these are my eyebrows. Actually they’re not. They’re a part of my hair. I cut the middle and left two patches of hair. LYN: My hairline is really low. Don’t worry. - LYN: I really don’t care too much about my hairline, because I think this is something you were born with. If you’re going to lose hair, you’re going to lose hair. If you really can’t take it regressing little by little, just shave it all off and be done with. There’s nothing to say about it. I think it’s fine. It’s not too high. There’s a product called “hairline powder”, right? I’m sure a lot of girls know what I’m talking about. There’s something called “hairline powder” when it reaches the point (of being too high), just apply some. LYN: Also, when shooting guzhuang dramas they need to glue a wig on anyway. It doesn’t matter. They can always start the wig right here (the middle of his forehead) and then spread outwards from there. You can glue it as low as you want. You can start from your nose. You can even cover your eyes with it. LYN: I don’t care. It’s whatever. C: The theme is “owl”. C: What is “hairline powder”? LYN: Go look it up on Baidu! What are you asking me for??

C: Next time act as a monk. (bald) LYN: I can’t do it. If you want to be a saint, you have to have an upright head. You have to have a nice shape. But mine is flat. Whenever I do my hair, I have to muss it up in the back (for the volume) to make it look round. The fashion in the Northeast is to have a flat head/hair. I don’t know why. The flatter your child’s head was, the better they would sleep. LYN: The back of my head is really flat. But I don’t know about people from the South- because all the staff around me are from the South and they have fuller heads. Mine is... mine is flat. :| LYN: So if you have kids, don’t let them sleep on one side too long and get a flat head. If you have a girl, and she wants to have a ponytail, it doesn’t look good if she has a flat head. You need to have a rounded head, for the ponytail to look cute. Otherwise you have to fill the space (on a flat head) to make it look fuller and such.

C: Ning-ge, I made a bet for a meal with my roommate on whether you would go to Mao-Xue Woof or not. LYN: Don’t just go around gambling, that’s not a good habit. Have you come to turn yourself in? LYN: Isn’t the common practice nowadays all about 上纲上线 (to criticize, as a matter of principle)? I guess I need to teach you a lesson. A friendly lesson.

C: My son also has a flat head and he looked cute when he was little. LYN: I advise you- I can’t order you to do anything, but I advise you- if you have kids, don’t let them grow to have flat heads. Try not to. But of course, the decision is yours to make. I’m just advising you.

LYN: It’s been many days since my last stream, so I came today to stream a little. I have a lot of work coming up in July. My schedule’s quite full so it doesn’t seem like I’ll be able to find the time to stream later. Today I went to do voice recording for YNGS and I’ve finally finished. It almost tired me to death. But I finished and wrapped up early so I came back and found that the time was right for a stream. // I finally finished and that counts as having completed one of my jobs, so I’m happy. We can look forward to it airing together.

LYN: It seems a lot of friends have finished taking tests today. I hope you can get good results and go to your ideal school. Okay?

C: Is your walkie-talkie real? LYN: What do you care if its real or fake?? What, do you want me to raffle it? This walkie-talkie usually doesn’t come as one- when you buy it, it will recommend that you buy them in pairs. Your meaning is that I keep this one and you want to other half of the pair, to put in your home? You can turn it on every once in a while and we can chat? Is that what you mean? I think the distance limit on this is only 50-100m or so. Further than that and I’m guessing it won’t transmit. It’ll all be for naught. Stop thinking about wanting my walkie-talkie. LYN: ? LYN: The last time I told you, that I would greet you with a new look this time. I had prepared this for the last stream, but this vest hadn’t arrived yet. So I didn’t get to wear it then, but I can now! This is my Love Security Guard uniform. It has the look, so it carries the meaning across. Just a little bit.

C: Did you get double-eyelid surgery? LYN: Yes, yes. I got double-eyelids. My eyes have just been sewn- they didn’t do a good job so it’s swollen. I need the shades to cover it. I went to get double-eyelid surgery two days ago. It was a group offer, and I went with some of my fans. It was a buy 10, get 1 deal. So I took 10 fans and they gifted me 1. Now my eyelids haven’t recovered yet and I’m wearing shades to cover them up. C: These were made in Hong Kong. LYN: Right, Hong Kong... C: Why didn’t you bring me? // Didn’t you say you were going to get eyebrow tattoos? LYN: 去你的! I don’t need eyebrow tattoos. My eyebrows look quite nice. Sometimes when I film they need to shave them. They’re too abundant. If they don’t thin my eyebrows I start to look like Crayon Shin-chan. I don’t need to tattoo my eyebrows.

LYN: I have two. C: High technology! // You can fit 16 people. LYN: /laughs/ Alright. I needed it for the look, but not for any practical use. It’s just for the outfit. My work uniform. C: How many dramas are you going to be in this month? LYN: Eh... that’s not important. Don’t care. You don’t need to pay much attention to my dramas, what you DO need to pay attention to is... -- 主宰 (To Rule) [大主宰 The Great Ruler Donghua OST] LYN: This is the theme song of The Great Ruler donghua, called “To Rule”. C: Can you take off the shades? LYN: I already told you I can’t, because I’ve just gotten double eyelid surgery. The surgical wounds haven’t healed yet so I’m recovering. I’m kinda ugly right now. Everyone on the internet is already calling me ugly. If they see me like this then it’s game over. Ugly on top of ugly. Isn’t there that saying, “two negatives make a positive”? Oh, wait- ?? If an ugly person gets an ugly double-eyelid surgery... then maybe you won’t think they’re ugly? C: Ning-ge, people are really going to believe you! LYN: /laughs/ But what I’m saying is true~~ They can believe it if they want! Do I have to be responsible for whether they believe I actually got double eyelid surgery or not? There are plenty of people spewing nonsense online. One more (LYN) doesn’t make a difference. Also, when I say nonsense, it’s only about myself and no one else. It’s fine. I had double eyelid surgery and I’m currently in recovery. My eyes are swollen. /giggles/ When they’re healed my eyes will look bigger. C: That’s great! LYN: ?! I told you I had double eyelid surgery, and to that your response is, “That’s great”?? How much must you have hated my small eyes, then? You’re happy for me, is that right? /sigh/ Maybe I should consider actually doing it?

LYN: Of course, other than The Great Ruler there’s a drama that’s currently airing and it’s called “Twilight” (暮色心约) -- 爱了很久 (I’ve Been in Love for a Long Time) [暮色心约 Twilight OST] LYN: This song is called “I’ve Been in Love for a Long Time” and it’s from the drama Twilight. Angelababy and Ren Jialun are working together on this project- it’s very good. If you are watching dramas and looking for one to watch, you can add “Twilight” to the list. It’s so good. Amazing. You have to check it out. It’s great.

C: Turn off the special effect. LYN: What’s it to you?? I won’t turn it off! LYN: It’s like this- my stream isn’t like a variety program, where the camera keeps changing angles and the like. There are no other special effects and all that other nonsense so I’m afraid that you may feel my stream is dry. That’s why I keep trying to use these loud and colorful effects, so that my stream seems more lively. Not everyone can do streaming, because the fear is that while you’re streaming you start to lose the interest. Once the mood drops and you can’t stand watching anymore, you’ll feel stifled. I try to keep the mood up so that you can be happy while watching; I aim for the more you watch the happier or more relaxed you can be. I’m just afraid of it being boring to look at, so I added those effects. C: As long as you are here, the mood is always here. LYN: Yes, I understand that but streaming isn’t.. private. I know I always say that I come here to chat with my fans and it’s considered an interaction. But on a platform like weibo, there are also a lot of travelers/guests/passersby. /switches his shades/ They might come into because they think I’m interesting and they want to watch a show. I just want to make it interesting, because if it were just my fans watching me, I could sit here doing nothing and they would still enjoy it. Passersby are not the same. I have to take everyone’s viewing experience into consideration. Some people- these shades are too childish, it’s bringing the mood down. /switches glasses/ Some people might think it’s too much, but that’s okay. If it’s too much- I need to wipe these, they’re so dirty.

C: Your double-eyelids have recovered? LYN: /chuckles/ /sighs/ What’s it to you?? LYN: I recover quickly! My type of double eyelid surgery doesn’t require recovery, so it doesn’t look like there’s anything done. C: What about the knife cuts? LYN: They disappeared. LYN: What- are you disappointed? I DIDN’T have double eyelid surgery and now it seems that some of you are... disappointed. That’s not worth it, right? It’s not worthwhile.

C: Ning-ge, your clothes are Love Security Guard. LYN: That’s right! That’s why I’m here, to promote dramas. There’s a drama called “Twilight” and if you have the time you can take a look, and check it out. It’s a Tencent production and I’ve sung the ending theme. I hope you can go support the drama.

LYN: Tonight there’s another very amazing drama that’s about to start airing. Tonight at 8p. It’s 7:46p right now, so there are only 14 minutes left until this drama starts. What is this drama called? I won’t say it. Why don’t you guess? C: ALZ! LYN: Keep dreaming. Many of you seem excited that I said there would be a drama airing tonight, and are speculating that it’s ALZ. C: BYOL! LYN: No, no. I already told you that my dramas aren’t important, because they haven’t aired yet. The important ones today are The Great Ruler animation on iQIYI, Twilight on Tencent, and the last one is airing on Mango TV and Hunan Satellite TV. This drama is called My Fireworks on Earth. The main leads are the talented Yang Yang and Wang Churan. Airing tonight at 8p on Mango TV and Hunan ST. // It’s a good drama, so you can go support it. I sing one of the theme songs, which you may have heard in the preview but for now you won’t be able to hear it. It’ll air in a few more minutes. So I can’t sing this song tonight. LYN: Wait- let me see if I can play you the chorus. /plays a bit/ It’s okay, because this part has already been posted on weibo in a highlight medley. This song is called 风衣 (Windbreaker). C: Ning-ge, you’ve sung for 5 of YY’s dramas now. LYN: That just means we have a special connection. i hope i can continue to be a part of his excellent projects.

- /promotes the shows again/ LYN: You don’t have to worry about lacking shows to watch. You can watch these three in turn. When you’re done watching two or six episodes here, you can turn to the other show. You won’t miss out on any of them. Very nice. LYN: As far as I know it’s going to be brutal in July and August. Friends- it’s going to be a whirlwind. Get ready to watch some action. The dramas that are airing are already quite fierce, but there are soon to be a few more. It’s crazy.

C: Destined. LYN: Oh, right. I also sang for Destined. But it’s already doing quite well. My friend circle is pretty much people in this industry- actors, platform staff, and producers. They will all post up some data/statistics on how well their dramas are doing. Destined is doing very well. So congratulations to them.

C: What’s wrong with your voice? LYN: I’ve been having to use it a lot lately, since I’ve been doing voice acting. These past two days I’ve done the finale part for YNGS. Near the ending I’m abducted and I keep yelling “Save me!” At the end Ning Yuanzhou is shouting for help. He shouts himself hoarse, but no one comes to save him. “Help me! Save me!” He just keeps shouting. I yelled out 12 “save me”s in total and now my voice is hoarse. So.. please be understanding.

C: You were abducted? LYN: Didn’t I already tell you? At the end of YNGS the male lead gets abducted by aliens. In the 40th episode, a UFO comes. It appears on the battlefield and lasso’d me up. While I’m going up, I scream for help, right? “Help me! Help me!!!” /ufo sounds/ It flies away. That was my ending scene. We need to wait for the second season for the UFO to fly back. That way I can film two seasons. This is an ending that I had discussed with the director. He thought it was a wonderful idea. So in the end I’m abducted by aliens and I scream for help twenty-something times. The end. C: Yi Nian Guan Qi. LYN: No, the second season is called ER (2) Nian Guan Shan, SAN (3) Nian Guan Shan, etc. It’s like a serial novel. All the way up to SHI (10) Nian. This way I could act out 10 seasons. I signed for one and then guaranteed I would have work for the rest of my life. At the ending of each one I’ll be taken away by aliens, and come back the next. This way the male lead will never die. He’ll live forever. LYN: This drama will be like the iPhone series. iPhone 1, iPhone 2... I heard it’s up to 15 now. Shi Wu (15) Nian Guan Shan. It can go until 1,285 Nian Guan Shan. It’s a story that crosses a thousand years. That’s too amazing.

LYN: If you saw the leaks for YNGS, you’d know that most of the time we were working through the night. I stayed up so late, so many nights, that I almost had a breakdown. There were so many fight scenes. So to me, YNGS was one of the more tiring dramas. But it’s also a drama I really like, otherwise I wouldn’t have put so much effort into it. I used the best of my ability to fulfill this character, and I hope it lives up to the expectations of all the people who worked on it. YNGS really tired me out and after it wrapped I only had a couple days before I went straight into ZY. LYN: I thought I would have a lighter load with ZY- because a lot of the story revolves around the female lead and her perspective. I thought I would get to relax more but then I found out that was not the case. We had scenes pretty much every day and the schedule was quite packed. In any case, doing two guzhuang dramas where I have quite a lot of scenes in, one right after another, was tiring. I’m not afraid of being tired (physically), but I’m just afraid that my passion towards guzhuang dramas has lessened. LYN: Sometimes I get to set and they tell me, “Ning-ge, you have to ride a horse today.” I get a headache. Even though in the leaks you’ve seen I look like I’m okay with riding the horse, I get to the set and see the horse and start to get nervous and feel so much pressure. I feel like crying right then and there. I don’t want to ride the horse~ I’m afraid of dying~ But there’s nothing I can do- I just have to grit my teeth and bear it. Other scenes are okay- but once it comes to fighting and riding horses I feel bad. I have trauma. You all know- the first time I had a scene with a horse I was kicked by it, which left an impression. Even though I CAN ride, I’m still afraid. As for the fighting scenes, I was shooting one for YNGS when I broke my foot. Now I’m a little afraid of fight scenes. LYN: Lately I’ve been doing the voice acting for YNGS, right? There are some scenes that I look at and I go, “I know why I wasn’t moving very much”- it’s because I had broken my foot. I can’t walk across the room. But the good thing was that most of the important scenes were shot before I broke my foot. There were only just a few small scenes left and we made do.

LYN: In any case, these two guzhuang dramas have worn me out. Mentally, not physically. As soon as I see a horse, my head hurts. When I have to do a fight scene and they want me to wear armor, I feel unwell. But while I was shooting for ZY, there were scripts were coming in, including some very good guzhuang dramas but I didn’t accept any because I want to shoot a modern drama. I need to do a modern one so I can recover. I also don’t want to shoot anything too time-intensive because I still need to make my album. I want to finish up voice acting and get my album made by the end of July so I can rest my body and mind for a bit. it’s also a good time for me to start learning something from modern dramas. I can work with a different set of actors and directors and learn from them. I’ll secretly take away the secrets to their performing arts. THEN I’ll come back for more guzhuang dramas.

LYN: I really do enjoy guzhuang dramas, though because later- it’s okay, I can say this. Later I will definitely pick up another guzhuang drama because I really do like them a lot. It’s just that shooting two big projects one after another has me burnt out. I need to recharge before I return to them.

C: What’s on your hand? LYN: This is the shock absorber for my mic. You don’t know, so I can’t tell you about it in too much detail. This is part of the microphone mount which helps to lessen the vibrations from handling. I was recording something on this laptop the other day and was using a different mic. This cord got left here.

LYN: There are some of you who really are new here. It used to be that if I wore an outfit like the one I’m wearing today, people would say, “Ning-ge, what the heck are you wearing? You look like our community security guard.” If I wore strange clothes or clothing that they didn’t understand, that would have been their reaction. I used to be able to reply to them that I couldn’t discuss fashion with them. “I can’t talk fashion with you. You just don’t get it. I can’t discuss anything too deep with you.” This slowly became a running joke between me and my fans. LYN: One day I saw- I forget which platform- someone had posted “Ning-ge’s clothes are ugly.” Someone else, who is one of my fans, had replied to them, “We can’t discuss anything too deep with you.” And the OP, very naively, replied, “Why not? I don’t get what you’re talking about. Why can’t you discuss it with me?” That person must have been a new fan, and they didn’t get our joke. LYN: It was just very naive. Well, not really- because there are a lot of people who don’t know our inside jokes. It’s okay. It’s normal. You’ll slowly come to know them all.

C: Was Hong Kong fun? LYN: It was! I even got to go around Disney. Someone asked me if Disney was fun. It was! But the only problem was that it was too hot on the day I went. Then we had to wait in line... I almost died from the heat. LYN: I saw people commenting on the reuters- “Ning-ge is really that unafraid of the heat? He’s wearing so much! Everyone else is wearing shorts and a t-shirt, but here he is in a long-sleeved shirt and pants. Black, at that!” Then I saw people explaining, “Ning-ge’s not hot. He usually shoots guzhuang dramas, and for those he needs to wear four to five layer. He’s used to it. He’s not hot.” They were explaining for me. I was SO hot!! The reason I was wearing long sleeves and pants was because I was afraid of getting tanned. It’s rare that I’m not shooting for a drama so I wanted to get pale again. So that the next time I start again we can start the process all over. Instead of starting off dark and getting darker. Having one really tanned character was enough. So, a lot of friends were trying to explain for me, but it was none of that- I was just afraid of getting more tanned. LYN: When you try out an attraction or whatever you have to wait in line, right? I was standing there and the sweat was flowing down my back. It was like running water- I was sweating everywhere. Later after four or five attractions I couldn’t take it anymore and told my group we should leave. I had originally heard that the fireworks were really pretty and was intending on watching them at night... but I left. If I had stayed there I would have gotten heatstroke. I was going to throw up. So I left. The weather was a little too hot, but everything else was okay. LYN: I went into the gift shop and bough Mickey ears- I thought I looked cool. All black and Mickey ears, paired with my little Mickey bag. I lived up to the mood of the amusement park. I wore it for a while, but... a lot of you are girls, right? Do you wear headbands often?? I don’t know, maybe it’s because my head was too big but after wearing the headband for a while my head started hurting. It was squeezing my head so much it started hurting! I think it was squeezing so tightly that my brain stopped working. I took it off. I was so hot and the headband made my head hurt, it was bad. C: It’s because your head was too big. LYN: Probably. It was certainly an unforgettable experience, though. It was so hot I ran away.

LYN: Later, the second day, I went shopping. Then a lot of my fans were unhappy- “Oh, so if you’re out shopping and you meet a fan, you’ll take pictures with them???” That day, let me tell you, it’s just because I was in a good mood. It was a rare chance for me to get out and shop- because I have some events I’ll need new clothes for. As soon as I got off the car, there was a girl standing by the shop entrance. I glanced at her and thought, “There’s no way she could recognize me, right?” I was low-key, and wanted to just sneak past her. But this fellow- as soon as I was next to her, she asked, “Lao-da, could I get a picture?” ... So I thought, okay why not. It was such a coincidence, because I didn’t tell anyone I would be going to that shopping area. If I am able to meet a fan by chance, I think that’s fate. So I said, “Okay. Let’s take one. You can have a picture, and be in good spirits.” And then this fellow... I don’t know how she did it. After we took the picture she started circulating it. I don’t know if she was part of a group or what, but she relayed the message. “Ning-ge is here right now. Grab a car quick and come over.” “Start recording him.” “Start following him!” LYN: I’m just guessing that their conversation went like this: “I just saw Ning-ge and took a picture with him. Look at this. Come here quick! Maybe he’ll take one with you, too! Quick, quick!” /sigh/ I only got to shop for a short while- but they came in rounds. I was walking and two more came up to me and asked if they could take a photo. I was wondering, “Am I popular to this extent, now?” So many passersby in Hong Kong recognize me, even? I was satisfied and happy. So I took a picture with whoever came, about two or three in a row. But after that set I started to realize that something seemed off. I didn’t think they were my fans. Because after I took the picture with them, I found out they didn’t leave. They started following me and wanted to shop with me. They would go wherever I went, holding their phones, and recording me. I was thinking, “Enough is enough. I only just got the chance to come out to play. I just want to shop around and buy some clothes. What are you following me for??”

LYN: Let’s say for example I walked into a shop and bought two articles of clothing- if you took a picture of that and posted it online, would people not talk about me, saying, “Look. An artist has so much money, they can buy whatever they want.” Now that makes it seem like I’m trying to show off how wealthy I am. Isn’t that strange?? I was afraid that if I liked three articles of clothing and wanted to buy them all, but saw that people were outside filming me so I only buy one. To make it seem like my life isn’t that materialistic. I wanted to be low-key. I’d buy only one, and leave the other two. Do you know how how fast my mind was spinning?? LYN: I finally got the rare chance for some private schedule and wanted to happily shop down the street and relax. Shopping is my only source of entertainment right now, after having been in Hengdian for so long. I’ve finally made it to a big city. But you just kept on following me, and nothing I said could get you to stop. I said, “Can you stop recording? Let me shop. Stop following me. If you have any requests, just let me know. I’m begging you, stop following me.” They said, “I do have a request, can I take a picture with you?” I replied, “Yes, you can! D: After that you can go home and rest. Do your own thing, stop following me.” I can’t even buy to my heart’s content. They just kept following... /sigh/ So I took pictures. Everywhere I went there were groups of people, one after another. Oh my goodness... I’m the type of person who either doesn’t take any pictures, or takes them all. But it was just that I finally got my own time and I was already tired from walking all day, but you just kept coming. There was nothing I could do- they’re all my fans, after all.

LYN: I do want to say, though. The next time I get time for myself and want to go around shopping, don’t follow me. C: They’re too much. LYN: It wasn’t too much- my fans are already pretty respectful. They’re very good. At least I can directly communicate with a lot of my fans. When I tell them to stop, they listen. They respect me. LYN: When I stream it’s a way of keeping you company, so when I shop I hope that you can control yourself and not go out of your way to come see me. Let me rest D:. I think the reason I can tell you these things during my stream is because my fans are different from everyone else’s. Not that I am saying that you are better than other fans, that’s not the case. You might be, but you won’t hear it out of my mouth. What I mean by “different” is that I am able to communicate with you. When I stream I can tell you what I’m thinking and likewise you all can tell me (in real-time) what you’re thinking. LYN: I haven’t made that vlog showing you the secret recipe for marinating meat, have I? It’s because I haven’t had the time to go out this week. Let me see if there’s a day in July where the weather is nice and I’ll take my studio out somewhere where there’s not a lot of people to grill some meat. When I do that I might shot a vlog. At that time I’ll also share with you the recipe for how to marinate meat. Alright? I’ll make a video and post it to weibo. LYN: It’s not exactly a “secret” recipe, it’s just something that we worked out that tastes good. C: Another pie in the sky. LYN: Yes, when you eat grilled meat it is proper to have some bread with it. It’s hard to get full when eating meat alone. You need some break with it, to cut the grease.

LYN: Yes, I don’t really like doing them though. But even though I’m not very popular, I still have collaborations with some brands- like L’oreal, Chunzhen, Givenchy. But because of the pandemic, for the past two-three years we didn’t have them and they were changed to streams instead. I quite like the streams, because it’s something I’m more familiar with. As for offline events, I have a bit of fear. Because... I’m too ugly. If my makeup that day isn’t the best or if I’m a little swollen and people take pictures that means I am in store for an internet full of criticism. I really don’t like offline events- I’m still a bit afraid of social interactions. LYN: I have a lot of other events this month, but I can’t say. You’ll know when the time comes. They’re pretty nice events that I will be participating in. There’s also photoshoots for the brands- while other artists are fighting to sign contracts, I really don’t like photoshoots or shooting ads. C: Ning-ge, your idol-baggage is a little heavy. LYN: /sigh/ If it were heavy I wouldn’t be able to stream. I don’t have any idol-baggage. LYN: I think you can understand this- I’ve started down the path of acting now but when people come to my stream and hear me speak all they hear is a “country” flavor. “I clicked into LYN’s stream the other day and when I listened all I heard was a strong Dongbei accent! Can he even act like that?? Who is he kidding?” This isn’t a “country” flavor, it’s a “coastal” flavor. It’s two different things. XD Because Dandong is near the ocean. LYN: Normally when I’m filming, I do use Standard Mandarin. When I’m streaming I will use my dialect to add a sense of... humor? I feel more relaxed this way. When I act though, I’m not using my accent. C: Dalian has a “coastal” flavor, too. LYN: Yeah- I’m from Dandong. Dandong accent and Dalian accent are pretty much the same. Pretty much, though there still are differences. For example, in Dandong we’ll say “Gan ha ma? (falling)” but in Dalian you might say, “Gan shen me? (rising)” (What are you doing?) I think that’s right?? But otherwise the “flavor” is pretty much the same.

LYN: Dandong has a curious thing where we take all the “zi (子)” and turn them into “de”. - /gives examples/ C: What about “gua zi” (melon seed)? LYN: Oh, “gua zi” we just say “gua zi”. We can’t say “gua de”. But we do say “gua zi’er”. We add an erhua. LYN: For example one of my roles is called “Hei Xiazi” right? We call him as “Hei Xiade”. LYN: Most of the time we will use “-de”. C: What about “sha zi” (fool)? LYN: We’ll say “sha de”. Also “-de”. C: What about “qie zi” (eggplant)? LYN: We say “qie de”. Let’s plant some “qie-de”.

LYN: Anyways, during my stream I’ll use Standard with some accent. It counts as a type of Standard Mandarin, only it’s not as “standard”.

C: What about “ge zi”? LYN: You mean the flying type “ge zi” (dove) right? We also call it “ge de”. Look, there’s a “ge de”. “Ge de”... ?? I don’t think we use “-de”. I think it’s “ge ze”. “-ze”? Oh no, let’s stop talking about this now.

C: What about “niang zi” (wife/lady)? LYN: We don’t have such a title. Are we in an opera, or are we acting? Who in real life calls someone “niang zi”? That’d be crazy. C: How about “chi zi” (wife)? LYN: ?? When you’re at home, does your husband call you like that? “Hey, wife.”??? “Let’s have dinner, wife.” That’s really weird! No one does that, right?

I act as the second male lead and only had around 200 or so scenes. I really enjoyed the role of Luo Mingxi, and it was my honor to work with such amazing actors. Of course, I only wanted to execute my own role well, and nothing else. C: Is it coming? LYN: Was it yesterday or the day before? The official page made a post, didn’t it? Since something was posted, what does that mean? That it’ll air LATER? Why would they post something so early, then. In this case it means that it’s going to air soon, right? I’m sure it’ll be soon. C: What date? LYN: /sigh/ My fam’, my friends. Even if I knew I wouldn’t be able to tell you. How can you come here and make it difficult for me? There’s no way I can tell you what date it’ll air. I’d be crazy. ...I really DO know what date it will air, but I can’t tell you. I know what the date is, but I can’t tell you. LYN: So as for exactly what date it airs, you can go ask the main leads on their weibo. Alright? Even though I know it’s not my place to say. All I’m here for is to take in the excess glow of their limelight and show my face. Reba and Gong Jun are both really amazing, right? Both in terms of industry influence and business practice. They’re nice enough for bringing me along and letting me play with them. I don’t need to go out and eat the first piece of lobster. LYN: There are always these lines in guzhuang dramas that make me feel embarrassed to say them. For example, if someone says, “You’re trending.” And the response should be, “Oh?” Every time I have to say “Oh?” I feel SO awkward. For example... “Report! The enemies have suddenly retreated!” “Oh?” XD But you’ll find that this happens in pretty much every guzhuang drama. “Oh? Is that true?” Every time I say that “Oh?”, I’m embarrassed. LYN: What else is there? When you cut yourself off. For example, someone might say, “You’re a fool and you’ve been tricked!” and the response is a cut off, “You-!” “I-!” At those moments I feel extremely awkward. Seriously. C: Oh? You’re embarrassed? LYN: “Oh? Ning-ge, there are also times when you feel embarrassment?” “You-! How could you say that about me? I- I- What did I do wrong??” LYN: “OH?” LYN: There’s also the times when the main lead suddenly starts laughing. Let’s say the villain said something, then the lead starts laughing. /laughs/ Then the villain will surely say these words, “What are you laughing for?” There will definitely be someone to follow-up the laughter with this line. Then the main lead will say, “I’m laughing because you don’t know your limits.” You can think about it- isn’t it true? I’ve been doing voice acting lately so I keep noticing that there are always these moments. LYN: Next time when it’s my turn and I have to say, “What are you laughing for?” I just won’t say anything. I’ll just let them laugh. I’ll just watch them. I won’t say “What are you laughing for?”. I’ll change the script and say, “Are you done?” instead. “Do you think you’re very funny?” LYN: I can change it to something else, too. If it’s improv I might say, “You look really ugly when you laugh. You look foolish and there’s something stuck in your teeth. Don’t laugh.” LYN: Let’s say someone’s laughing, and I cut in with “Oh? What are you laughing for?”

C: Hahaha. LYN: What are you laughing for? What’s so funny about it? You-!

LYN: What else is there, that you’ve noticed while watching dramas? Something that you hear and always feel cringe at.

LYN: Right! There’s also: “/gasp/ It’s you!” and someone else says, “How could it be you??” It’s you... The next time I’m acting with someone and they say, “It’s you?!” I’ll look at them and reply, “No. You’ve got the wrong person. See you again.”

C: "Still your sword.” (Stop the execution.) LYN: Right. Right around the time of the climax and someone has to die, there’s an 80% chance someone will show up and say, “Still your sword!” They’ll be riding a horse, too. Everyone will look at them like, “What? Someone came?” This is also a useful and common routine. At this moment, the bad guy will say, “Ignore them! Execute immediately!” and throw down the order. These scenes all go the same way. They throw down the order and the executioner is about to bring their sword down but someone knocks their hand away and the sword goes flying. In any case, this person is not dying.

C: “Let me explain.” LYN: There’s a lot of this is romantic and modern dramas. “Let me explain!” / “No, I won’t listen!!” or maybe “Let me explain.” / “No, I won’t! All men are trash!” Wait- what did I just imitate. Right, it was a girl. (because he didn’t change the voice for the “female” character, so he confused himself.)

C: “There’s something I don’t know if I should say or not.” LYN: Yes! “There’s something I don’t know if I should say or not.” / “Then don’t say it. Even you know that you shouldn’t be saying it, so if you do that would be lacking sense. You had better not say.” If it were me and someone told me not to speak I would reply with, “No. I must say this today, to return justice. I don’t care if you don’t want me to say it. I was just being polite. I still have to say my piece.”

C: “Who’s there?” LYN: This is normal. This is a common phrase used by many because... let’s say your friend came to your house and knocked on the door. Wouldn’t you normally say, “Who’s there?”? You’ll ask who’s at the door. This phrase is the same. This is normal.

C: “Chase them!” LYN: /laughs/ This is also considered normal but only certain people use it. This is a well-used but necessary line. It’s fixed.

C: “Don’t worry about me, you leave first!” LYN: “No, I won’t go. If you die, we die together!” “Listen to me. You go first, I’ll be right behind you.” As soon as there’s danger you want your partner to leave first. This is normal, too. If a drama is about to air, the official site will post some promo posters. They will go around to everyone’s groups to confirm. Let’s say a drama is airing- there’s bound to be promotional materials for it first. Like photos, behind the scenes, or interviews. Before the drama airs, the platform will send all of these materials to the actors so that they can confirm/look over them. After the materials are cleared, then you’ll see them online. LYN: Lately I have had a few drama materials sent to me to be confirmed. So when they start sending us materials, then we (as actors) know that the drama is about to air. C: Oh? Truly? LYN: Of course, this is how it is. The drama is constantly sending materials to confirm- like the behind the scenes clips and other promotional material. C: Oh? How many? LYN: No- I meant a few materials for the same drama, not materials for different dramas. They all go through this process. Also, the platforms usually invite someone from the actor’s studio- the actors themselves rarely go- to come to the company and review the clips. What that means is they play everything and let you look it over. The purpose is so that when it starts to air, you’ll know how you’re supposed to promote it. // So I’ve had materials sent to me for confirmation before they are officially uploaded. I go to do voice acting and I’m almost done with YNGS. Tomorrow I’ll start recording songs for my album and all the OSTs that I owe. I’ll be busy. LYN: I might be a more complicated person. Other than acting, I have another identity and thats as a singer. I can’t just abandon it. My main thing is about having plenty of work to do, right? I could do some singing here, then do some acting there, and in general have work all-around. That’s nice, isn’t it? LYN: I always say I’m a singer and actor, but I need something to show for myself right? If I say I’m a singer, I need to treat it seriously and have something to show before I can be called a real “singer”. Likewise with acting, I need to have works to show before I can call myself a real “actor”. I need to be sincere in making an effort to do both. I can’t just stick to filming dramas and stop singing. I have to sing- I need to make my songs so that I can hold my concert.

LYN: My identity as a singer is more familiar to everyone, because I always sing for dramas. Many of you might not have actively heard me sing, but they have surely watched dramas that I have sung OSTs for. You more or less acknowledge me as a singer. But my dramas are not as widely acknowledged, especially since up until now I have only played as supporting roles. Some dramas that I’ve acted in, you can’t even tell it’s me. The first possibility here is that the drama wasn’t very popular to begin with. The second possibility is that my look was so unique that you don’t recognize me. Just like with UN- after that aired a lot of people didn’t know that I acted as Hei Yanjing. I’ve done quite a bit of support roles- one after another, to make it to where I am today. And you still say I rely on resources? LYN: I’ve discovered a fascinating problem- whenever it is officially announced that I am part of a drama, there will also be people who ask, “Who is backing LYN?” “Why are his resources so good?” “Who’s his backer?” /laughs/ Every time. But by now it’s part of the process. It’s not my first time debuting- it's been five years already. If you haven’t found an answer by now, isn’t that a little too mysterious?

LYN: There have been people speculating, too. “His backer is”- I won’t say the name of the platform, but it’s “some short video platform”. “Behind LYN is that short video platform. They’re using their resources to back LYN.” But the problem here is that I’m currently streaming on weibo. If that platform were indulging me, then why wouldn’t I be streaming on their platform instead?? LYN: They’re sure that I have some sort of resource to back me. “LYN’s a singer, why are so many dramas looking to cast him? They invest in you because they want to make profit, so you would have to offer them incentive to back you. But how do people make a profit? The majority nowadays is by influencer marketing or endorsement deals. Things with a quick turnover in a short amount of time. But think about it- I’ve never tried to market you anything in all these years. I’ve been debuted for five years and have never accepted a business proposal- like going out to sing a song for some event in which I can get... not a little amount of money. I’m sure that not many singers can say the same. My resources must be crazy. /sarcastic/

LYN: My albums on QQ and 163Music are all free. Even though I don’t have many albums... but all my songs are free. I don’t want anyone to spend money to listen to my music. My resources must be crazy. If I have the time to stream here, why wouldn’t I be out there trying to make some capital by accepting business proposals? Or maybe shoot an ad? Those would definitely make me more money than streaming can. So what capital do I have? You’re making this too complicated. Its not like they owe you- you have to bring them something in return.

LYN: If there really was someone backing me, they would never let me stream like this. Because I say too much. If there was some financial figure or group of people supporting me with funds, they would never let me stream like this, because I say too much. Many people don’t speak because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. Less is more, right? If I spoke less, maybe I would have less problems. LYN: Why do I stream so much? Because my capital are my fans and they WANT me to stream. As soon as I stop streaming for a couple of days these people get started, “Ning-ge- it’s been 16 days since you streamed last. That’s half a month. How inconceivable. I can’t believe he’s really that busy.” My fans are my resource and they want me to stream every day.

LYN: I don’t really have any capital, but if you want to say that I do that’s also fine. I won’t consider it as slander or take it as meant to disparage me. If you think I have backers, does that mean that you won’t bully me as much anymore? XD Would you bully me less? LYN: It really doesn’t matter. If you took some time to understand this industry you would know. Let’s talk about my collaborations- I have worked with every platform. The Great Ruler is on iQIYI. Twilight is on Tencent. My Fireworks on Earth is on Mango TV. I do it all. It’s not fixed, just because they “back” me. LYN: The reason why I was able to make it to where I am today and able to get these jobs you think I couldn’t land on my own in the first place is because of my fans. I have fans who have accompanied me, who are supporting me, and that’s why I am here today. The other thing is that while working, sometimes you might meet up with someone you will become indebted to. Someone who pulls you into the industry. At first you might not have the opportunity to become an actor. It takes the first person to give you that chance- it could be a supporting role (there's no way they’ll give you a leading role from the start)- they give you a really good project that suits you, and you try it out. You start to love this industry and you WANT to start acting. By this time you will have started to get to know people who work in the industry, and it’s your turn to show them what you’ve got and make it work for yourself. It just takes one person to introduce you; but they can’t be considered as “backers” who support you with funding. They’re just someone who lends a helping hand- in life and at work you will always meet people who will help you. So these people, including the platforms, have given me chances to prove myself. I’m thankful to everyone who gives me work. LYN: You just have to slowly meet people and accumulate experience so that more people can get to know you. Slowly, you start to have more work to do.

C: You have a good reputation. LYN: It’s not about having a good reputation. It’s just that after I work with a director/actor/platform, we always come out of it happy. We become good friends. I’m from the Northeast plus I’m already this old, so I don’t have any pretenses. In the crew or at work, I’m not picky. I might be praising myself a little but I’m not high-maintenance, because I don’t see the need to be. I’s all good. Even if we can’t become GOOD friends, we’re still friends. LYN: This industry is actually very small. Let’s say you’ve worked with LYN once. For the next drama there might be a role that suits him, so the director asks you, “I heard you’ve worked with LYN before. What's he like?” This is how people find information in this industry. Likewise a platform might ask a director/other actors about an actor they’ve worked with. It’s all the same. Through this process, work might come to find you. C: The main focus is “good reputation” (by word of mouth). LYN: I don’t really have one, really. It’s just that I’m pretty sincere when I interact with people, so their impressions of me are good. Up until now I haven’t heard of anyone saying anything bad about me. Everyone is very nice.

LYN: But the thing is- whether someone gives you a chance or helps you out- you really have to be able to live up to their expectation. You can’t just go in ungratefully. The fact that they have offered this job to you means that you need to put in your best effort in return. You have to take it seriously and really show off what you’re good at. This way, they will find you a second time. Do you get it? If you work with someone once and it turns out badly then your path becomes narrower the farther you go.

LYN: This is getting a bit deep. It’s been a long time since I last streamed, so I really wanted to come and chat. I don’t mean anything by what I’m saying, so you don’t need to psychoanalyze my words. There’s no hidden meaning- I’m just chatting with you like I would with friends. I am more relaxed when I stream so sometimes something I say can be taken out of context and used against me, but I really mean no ill-intent with my words. I’m not trying to sell myself out or self-praise. I just want to share the things I’ve seen and explain them.

C: I’m your visual-fan. LYN: You’re a fan of my visuals? Oh? Truly? LYN: Of course, I consider visuals to be very important, because being good-looking is an advantage. It’s true. But there’s really no need for me to go around promoting my looks. Objectively, being good-looking has it’s advantages. The people who say you can’t rely on your looks to put food on the table are really wrong. D: You can get full by having a nice face. LYN: But the thing is you can’t always rely on your face- because you’re not using it for only 3-5 years. Once you reach a certain age- 40 or 50- if your head is empty and you don’t understand or know how to do anything, then you’re going to get eliminated from this industry. I’m sure by that time a lot of people don’t want to continue in this profession, but I am someone who wants to keep going. LYN: Visuals are extremely important. It’s not because I don’t have any, that I would think it’s not important. No- I also think it’s important. I just don’t think it’s the only thing that matters to help you succeed. It might help you to succeed faster, but it’s not the only factor to success. LYN: You can be a fan of my visuals, that’s okay. It might be a good opportunity for you to get to know me. But I hope you can be attracted by my WORKs instead. That’s the most important.

C: Ning-ge, I’m an all-fan. LYN: What does that mean? Film, music, visuals, streaming- all of these can attract you, is that it? I probably wouldn’t consider that an all-fan, it’s just that you like me as a person. You can accept anything that I do. There’s no difference there between being an all-fan or a 1/7th-fan. C: I’m your leg-fan. LYN: You starting liking me because of my legs? I’m sure it’s not ONLY because of my legs, right? Or street lamps? After you see them (pair of long & skinny objects), you’ll stop being my fan and start being theirs. I think this can be replaced. But things with soul cannot. LYN: Maybe one day you’ll be in math class playing with a compass and then suddenly get addicted to your compass. You’ll start thinking that a compass’s proportions are even more extreme (than mine). You’l go from a LYN Legs-fan to a Compass fan. There’s that possibility. This is something that can be replaced. Soul cannot.

C: Ning-ge, I’m a fan of your abs. LYN: Then you’re tricking me. You don’t like me at all, because I don’t HAVE abs. If I don’t have any, then how did you start liking me? Are you seeing me in this outfit and hallucinating that I have an 8-pack? Then you’re a fan of illusions. Or perhaps, have you time traveled from 2025? In 2025, LYN has abs and has ripped his shirt off during a concert? After seeing that you travelled back to 2023 to come tell me that you’re a fan of my abs? C: You have at least one. LYN: Oh?

C: Quick, look at the trending topics! LYN: Am I on there? Am I- I didn’t know I had the honor. // I saw it. I didn’t open it, but it’s not about me, so I’m not going to look.

C: Are you hot? LYN: Um.. I have an air conditioner at home. I’m not hot. It’s very cool and refreshing. Even if I were wearing a down jacket I wouldn’t be hot. Today I purposely created this “Love Security Guard” look.

When I’m acting you cover my face and look only at my hands? That’s not really possible. Maybe my hands are the thing that attracted you, only. You must still like [me]- Otherwise I can be too easily replaced! LYN: One day let’s say you’re in the market and you see a pig’s foot that’s been blanched especially white. The butcher will set up a row of pig’s feet and you see them and think, “Wow, they’re so white and soft! So oily. So meaty.” In that instant you’ll stop being my fan and become a fan of those pig’s feet. You can even buy two home to look at. You’d be able to touch them with your own hands. You can hold hands with it, and it can keep you company.

C: Ning-ge, I’m a “moronic” fan. LYN: Do you mean to say that you think I’m “moronic”? You’re a fan of the “moronic” side of me?? Good. Here’s the thing- there is no moronic or not moronic fan. I find that there are people who call fans “moronic” (brainless), and there’s really no need. Everyone has their own hobbies and pursuits. I always see people saying, “What’s the point of chasing stars? These people look really... idiotic.” There’s no need for that. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. LYN: Some men like cars. Some like to buy houses. Some like to fish. Some like to dance. Some people like hurdles. Some people like to skateboard. That’s just they way it is- everyone has their own preferences. What’s yours? You might like to chase stars, or support some actor or singer. It’s just what you like. Do you think other people don’t have their own likes/dislikes? It’s personal preference. All we have to do is have mutual respect. LYN: You’re living in this society for a mere 30 years- not 30 years!- I mean you only live on this Earth for a few decades. /laughs at his slip of tongue/ Don’t think too much about how others might perceive you. Just do what you want to do. If you want to curse at LYN, do it. I can understand. LYN: If you find happiness in being online to curse me out or mess with me, then I would consider my existence to be meaningful. At least I am able to be an influence in your daily life. Maybe you find glee in the process of posting bad things about me online; that also goes to show how impressive I am. I’m not afraid of people talking about me. What I’m afraid of is when they don’t. That’s what’s really terrifying. When no one talks about you, that’s when you have to be ready to leave the stage.

LYN: This circle is... cruel. This industry is an upstream current. If you’re not constantly moving forward, then you’re falling behind. The farther behind you get, a new set of waves will come to knock you to the sidelines. When feel like you WANT to swim you’ll find yourself unable to. It’s a constant uphill battle. If people are talking about you, from a certain angle, it’s a good thing.

LYN: Let me tell you how I feel. Sometimes I’ll receive some drama scripts- they are project books, and they will name actors. These actors might not accept the offered role, but the script will be sent out. Each script has your own name! It’s not like they will send me a pamphlet meant for another actor and then say, “The original intended actor for this role was OOO but now we’re sending it to you to take a look.” Do you get it? So they send out the project booklet- and it will outline the project, the company, the director, and other production details, including who the other actors may be. LYN: For one period of time all the books I was receiving had the same female actresses. The same three for all the projects. I was thinking, “These three are capable of doing 6-7 works at the same time???” They were just too amazing. But then, looking at the scripts this year, you’ll find that some of the names went missing. It’s a pretty cruel industry. // Rather than “went missing”, their names were replaced with someone else’s. You know? I’m sure I’m also often being replaced by someone else. LYN: What I was getting at was you have to continuously move forward. You must work hard. If you don’t climb, and just stand in the same spot “picking at your feet”, you’ll be in that spot forever. In the end you might end up as a pedicurist instead. You can’t idle.

C: I’m picking my feet right now, how did you know? LYN: Go wash your hands! Oh my goodness... When I say “picking at your feet” I mean it metaphorically and not literally!

C: Where’s Daimi? LYN: She’s sleeping. Whenever I go out to work she accompanies me. She has to suffer. It sucks for her because there’s a cat in the recording studio I go to. It’s quite an old cat and very composed. But Daimi keeps bothering the cat- she keeps trying to smell it- so the cat whacked her. When cats fight it’s really amazing; their claws are so agile. The cat smacked Daimi silly. Mutitple times. But Daimi keeps going back. She’s at a disadvantage. LYN: But I can’t blame the cat. It was just nicely laying there and Daimi just had to go over and mess with it. She wanted to smell it. If you’re sleeping and someone tries to smell you, isn’t that just asking for a beating? I have to teach her a lesson- so that she can be more polite when she leaves the house.

C: Ning-ge, when are you dyeing your hair back? LYN: Before I enter into the new crew. For now I will continue to stream for you as a blonde for a little while longer. It’s been a long time since I last bleached my hair, too. When I start drama work again, it will go back to a normal color. C: Limited edition. LYN: It’ll be difficult for me to dye my hair again. But I think it’s kind of fun. Change a hair color to change a mood. It’s nice. C: Shave it. LYN: Pass. There was a time I had cut my hair short. At that time I told myself I could never be so impulsive again. It doesn’t suit me. If you want short hair, you have to have good features, first. I’m the opposite- I depend on my hair to live. This is my own drama, and my first time as a male lead for a guzhuang; of course, my first lead role was with Tao-jie (BYOL). I’m happy that they allowed me to sing two songs for it. We picked them out carefully and I like them a lot. They’re very nice.

We didn’t FIND anyone to play an alien. They’re CGI. They’re very expensive. The CG for the flying saucer alone was really expensive. Then they have to abduct me.

LYN: I discovered something that day- let’s say there’s a small dog in a drama and it barks. In Heroes there was a dog called Da Huang, right? Let’s say the dog barks. If I had brought Daimi in to dub for the dog, she would be credited for it! It would be “Da Huang / Daimi”. If I had brought her in to the recording studio to bark, they would credit her. As a sign of respect to the actor. Really. C: Oh? Truly? // Did she get paid? LYN: We wouldn’t ask for payment for that!
