jihoon is a simple man. (he’s five)

he likes rice (who doesn’t?), and he’s gotten pretty good at flipping it to cool it down (no, that doesn’t count as playing with his food). he like music, and piano, and the sounds that the clarinet makes. he likes the way that the boy with the cinnamoroll smile sings during praise time, a secret that he’ll carry to his grave. he likes the sounds that pork belly makes when appa cooks them on the grill. he likes the number five.

he likes busan.

he does not, however, like daegu.

sure, his family lived there, and it definitely had better rice than the states…but at the very mature age of five years old, jihoon knew that he didn’t like going there. it’s too busy, there are too many people, and he isn’t able to visit the beach.

this is what jihoon was contemplating on the swings as a slightly taller boy approached him, the latter’s presence going unnoticed.

“are you okay?”

“ahhh!”

jihoon fell off of the swing set, unharmed but thoroughly disgruntled. the taller boy burst into laughter at his expression.

“what the heck was that for?!” he glared at the newcomer, who immediately started sulking.

“aish, i just wanted to make sure you were okay. you had such a serious look on your face and you looked kinda angry. why are you angry on the swings?” he asked, tilting his head. he was still pouting slightly. jihoon frowned, but shook his head, pushing away the strange boy’s outstretched hand and dusting himself off.

“i don’t have to tell you that.” he paused. “who are you, anyway?”

“choi seungcheol, i’m six. who are you?”

“lee jihoon. i’m five.”

there was a pause. seungcheol kicked the dirt, causing the leaves to swirl before breaking the silence.

“do you have any siblings? i have a hyung, his name is seungmin.”

“no.”

“oh.”

another pause.

“your accent is kinda funny. it kinda sounds like you’re from busan…but not? are you from busan?” seungcheol asked, taking a seat on the swing next to him. jihoon nodded, then thought better about it and shook his head.

“i’m from the us, but i usually go to busan for chuseok and seollal…but this year we went to visit my appa’s family, so now i’m in daegu instead.”

seungcheol’s mouth formed an o, pout disappearing in an instant.

“woah, you’re from the us? what’s it like there?”

jihoon shrugged.

“it’s loud, and much crazier than korea. i like busan better.”

seungcheol nodded, contemplating the information.

“do you like daegu?”

jihoon puffed out his cheeks, and blew out a puff of air. he glanced at the older boy, and a smile ghosted his lips.

“it’s not too bad here.”

seungcheol smiled.

“but i still like busan better.”

“hey!”

seungcheol’s parents don’t let him go out on his own. at six years old, he’s still too young. but he’s technically not by himself, he reasons, because seungminnie hyung is still in the same playground, so he’s not breaking the rules.

technically.

it’s the chuseok holidays, meaning that his eomma reminds him once again that it’s time for family. so even though he doesn’t really remember any of them (he’s only six after all), he dutifully follows his hyungs, noonas, and sacheon-dongsaengs to the park.

it was, of course, the best playground in the gyeongsang-do.

don’t wander off, seungcheol-ah.

well, if his hyung was in the same area, it would be fine, right?

this is what is wandering through choi seungcheol’s mind as he ambles his way through the leaves towards the swings.

only to find that his favorite spot has been taken, by a boy not much younger than him but definitely angrier.

tip-toeing around him, so as not to disturb his brooding, seungcheol examines the boy.

the first thing he notices are his cheeks. round and pink (most likely from the cold), they kinda look like the japanese tteok (seungcheol couldn’t remember the name) that his jageun-gomo had brought from japan. his lips were puffed out in a way that made him look like a duck, and his nose was scrunched in the way that someone’s nose does when they are thinking very hard about something important.

but he also looked upset.

“are you okay?”

the boy must have been in deeper thought than seungcheol realized, because he let out a small shriek and fell off of the swing.

his surprise was so funny that seungcheol couldn’t help but laugh.

“what the heck was that for?!” he asked, glaring at seungcheol.

his smile immediately fell and a pout replaced it.

“aish, i just wanted to make sure you were okay. you had such a serious look on your face and you looked kinda angry. why are you angry on the swings?” he asked, tilting his head. he reached out his hand to help the other up, but he pushed it away and dusted himself off with a huff.

“i don’t have to tell you that.” he paused. “who are you, anyway?”

jihoon grins when he sees seungcheol sitting on the swings.

for the past eight years, jihoon’s parents have asked him where he wants to spend the holidays that require a bit of travel.

for the past eight years, jihoon has chosen to go to daegu.

for the past eight years, he and seungcheol have met at the same playground at the same swing set. whether it was surrounded by leaves, under the full moon or a moonless sky, they had always found themselves back at the same place, an escape from the rest of the world.

but when jihoon made his presence known with the crunch of snow under his feet and a small “hello”, he wasn’t expecting the older boy’s smile to be so strained, so forced. happy to see him yet so…sad. so he asks the question that seungcheol asked him all those years before.

“are you okay?”

seungcheol’s cheeks puff, and he lets out a breath slowly.

it’s quiet, at least for a moment, and jihoon takes the time to sit down next to him.

“i got my soulmark.”

jihoon blinks. his chest tightens ever so slightly, not enough for him to worry but enough for him to grip the swing just a little more tightly.

“congratulations, hyung.”

“i found him.”

oh.

“his name is jeonghan.”

“yoon jeonghan? from your dance school?”

“yeah.”

“oh.”

jihoon’s vision blurs ever so slightly, and it takes a few moments for him to realize that he’s crying.

jihoon never cries.

he bites his lip to keep the tears from falling before a small sniffle makes him realize that seungcheol’s crying too.

“hyung…why are you crying?”

the question comes out in a whisper.

seungcheol laughs. it’s watery, and bittersweet.

“for the same reasons as you.”

because i’m happy for you. because you’re my best friend. because you’ll get to experience the type of love that everyone else wishes they could have.

because i wish i were him.

because somewhere along the way, i fell for you, too.

jihoon smiles, though it doesn’t quite meet his eyes, and a shaky breath escapes his lips.

seungcheol reaches out, and tugs jihoon’s swing closer to his.

“i’m sorry, uji-ah.” he pulls the shorter boy in for a hug, one so tight that between the fluids building up in his nose and seungcheol’s puffer blocking all of his air systems, jihoon can’t breathe. but seungcheol needs this.

and so does jihoon.

“me, too.”

for ever thinking that i’d be lucky enough to have you.

the next year, jihoon goes to busan for chuseok.

Jungwon and Sungho stood near the campus quad, casually pretending to check their phones but really keeping a close eye on their surroundings. The plan was simple: get Y/n and Taesan to bump into each other “by chance.” No setup, no awkwardness, just a completely natural meeting.

“Okay,” Jungwon muttered, peeking over his shoulder. “Y/n’s on her way. She’ll be walking past the fountain any second.”

“And Taesan is coming from the library,” Sungho added, glancing at the path across the lawn. “They’ll meet right in the middle.”

It was foolproof. All they had to do was wait and watch. Nothing could go wrong. Right? Wrong.

From one side of the quad, Y/n came into view, balancing her art supplies in one hand and her phone in the other. She looked preoccupied, exactly as planned. From the other side, Taesan was heading toward the fountain, his headphones in, lost in thought.

“This is it, Jungwon,” Sungho whispered, grinning. “They’re about to collide.”

But just as Y/n neared the fountain, a voice called out from behind her. Jungwon and Sungho froze.

“Y/n noona! Wait up!”

It was Ni-ki, waving frantically as he jogged up to her.

Jungwon groaned under his breath. “Oh fuck no, not now…”

Y/n stopped, turning around to greet Ni-ki. The two of them started chatting, completely derailing the plan. Jungwon lunges forward but is grabbed by Sungho.

Meanwhile, Taesan was still making his way toward the fountain. Sungho leaned forward eagerly behind Jungwon, hoping at least half of their plan could still work.

But no.

“Yo! Taesan!” Jaehyun suddenly appeared, catching up with him from behind. “You heading to class? Let’s walk together!”

Taesan, oblivious to the grand plan, pulled off his headphones and nodded, letting Jaehyun steer him off course and away from the fountain.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Sungho muttered, watching in disbelief as both targets were intercepted at the last second.

The two friends exchanged frustrated glances as they watched Y/n and Taesan being dragged in opposite directions by their well-meaning friends.

“Unbelievable,” Jungwon sighed, rubbing his forehead. “This was supposed to be the easiest plan ever.”

“Right? All they had to do was walk straight,” Sungho grumbled. “But no, the giant and the puppy had to show up at the worst possible moment.”

They sulked behind the tree, watching the two walk away in different directions. Their grand plan, carefully crafted over text, had been completely foiled by their overly chatty, uninvited friends.

“How did this not work?” Jungwon groaned, folding his arms. “It’s like the universe doesn’t want them to meet.”

“Or maybe Ni-ki and Jaehyun are just annoying and love ruining our plans,” Sungho added, shooting a glare in their direction with his fists clenched.

They both stood in silence for a moment, sulking as they watched their plan unravel in slow motion.

“I blame Ni-ki,” Jungwon muttered, shaking his head. “Why did he have to show up when no one needed him?”

“And Jaehyun, who just can’t let Taesan walk anywhere alone,” Sungho added with a sigh.

They both stared at the quad, defeated, as Y/n and Taesan disappeared in opposite directions, completely unaware of how close they had come to meeting.

“So… Plan B?” Jungwon asked, shoving his hands into his pockets.

Sungho groaned. “There’s going to have to be a Plan B.”

They started walking away, cursing both Jaehyun and Niki and coming up with a new scheme, while still shaking their heads at how perfectly everything had gone wrong.

- the guy that will never leave you dehydrated, because he keeps a water drinking app on his phone to track you. he likes to make sure you’re taking care of yourself, because not seeing you at your best means yujin isn’t fully at his best either.

“FINE, i’ll order a water please. 👹”

- if your female identifying, he also has an app to track your cycle. actually, this man has an app for everything about you, even a personal mood journal, where he can document what you said, did, and how you reacted. yujin loves his apps, and yujin also looooves to take care of you.

- not huge on pda, but he gets a little thrill from small acts of affection that are almost impossible to notice. holding pinkies, tying shoelaces, or zipping up your jacket really make him feel like a daredevil >:)

Yiji felt defeated. The past few days she had been keeping quiet about not feeling well. Everything she did required extra effort, from waking up in the morning, to rehearsals, and fulfilling whatever schedules they had for the day.

The release of their new album was today, as well as their one year anniversary. A year ago today they released their first debut album, and since then the concept of a whole year has never seemed so short.

Despite the nauseating feeling that was eating her up, she didn’t want to worry the boys or distract them from all the promotions that would be taking place for the next month at least.

“I can’t do this,” she pleaded to one of their managers present. “Since run throughs this morning I could barely stand without feeling like passing out.”

Her begging was no use, “I’m sorry but that’s not an option, you’ve worked hard to meet your target weight, you’ll be fine but we can’t have you sitting out on your comeback performance.” 

His words were stern and she knew he wasn’t going to change his mind anytime soon.

The hallway door behind them creaked open, putting a hault to their tense dispute. Chan peaked his head in, eyeing the two. “Is everything good in here?”

“It’s fine,” Yiji muttered in annoyance, “let’s go.” 

She followed Chan into the other room where the rest of the boys were getting fitted.

“Noona you look really pale,” Jeongin spoke up.

At that, the nine of them turned in her direction

“Hey you guys I’m fine, don’t look at me like that,” she whined, taking a spot next to Changbin on the cushioned seats.

“Are you sure you’re feeling okay?” Changbin whispered into her ear.

“Yeah, I’m just tired.”

Yiji knew the risks of being a performer, an idol at that. Image and appearances were everything, whether you were sick and or injured, keeping up the image of perfection was expected. 

Although the guilt of potentially letting the stay down would eat her conscience alive. Her outfit for the come back was a lot of long sleeve material and leather. The stickiness of the fabric was already beginning to make her feel clammy and she had yet to step foot outside of the dressing room.

It wasn’t long before a staff member came into the room and began ushering them out to take their places on the stage.

The lights were dim as they took their places . Yiji saw Changbin take another concerning glance in her direction but she brushed it off. 

As soon as the music reached her ear piece, her body fell into the familiar rhythm. For this come back, their title track was really choreography heavy in comparison to those before it. 

Her vision began to blur but she still pushed herself to hold out.

As soon as the instrumental break down began, she felt her weight give out. Her legs fell limp underneath her, frame colliding with the stage. The only thing her ears could hear was the gasps that echoed throughout the crowd.

“Jesus Yiji,” Felix shouted from her left. 

Instantly Jisung was at her side, propping up her limp body onto his leg.

“We need a doctor please!” Chan panicked.

“I got it!” Jeongin yelled, running off stage to find help.

“Chan I’m so sorry,” she groaned, tears welling up in her eyes.

“This isn’t your fault,” he whispered, grabbing her hand. “It’s okay, you’re okay.”

Not even minutes after Jeongin reappeared with a doctor.

Yiji winced at every touch as the woman examined her.

“What’s wrong with her?” Changbin asked a little to aggressively. 

The doctor sighed as she placed Yiji’s hand back down at her side. “Unfortunately this is just a common case of companies starving and overworking their idols.”

The nine of them said nothing, they were too shocked. Yiji was never one to keep quiet, especially if she didn’t agree with something.

“Is there anything we can do for her now?” Felix asked.

“Ideally bed rest for a few days, help her regain her appetite even if it’s two small meals a day,” she advised.

The ride home was silent. Everyone was still on edge but did their best not to wake the unconscious girl that lay across Jisung and Minho’s lap. 

“What’s going on?” Yiji winced, slowly opening her eyes. 

She felt a coarse grip tighten on her hand. Squinting, she could just barely make out Minho’s face. His gaze was fixated outside the window but his grip on her hand was tight with worry.

“Tell me the truth Yi-An, does the company have you on a diet?” Chan asked. Her body tensed at the question, but of course he managed to put two and two together. He was pissed. 

Yiji couldn’t bring herself to speak, she was embarrassed and disappointed that she let things get to this extreme. 

“Noona please, let us fix this!” Jeongin begged.

Yiji sighed, gripping onto Minho’s hand tighter. “Truthfully, I’ve been on a restriction for the past two weeks per management,” her voice cracked. “I wanted to ask for help but I wasn’t allowed to.”

“What the hell?” Felix growled from the back seat.

“So they force you to basically starve yourself and make you stay quiet about it,” Chan summed up. His tone with each word was scary, and made her question if being honest was really the right decision. 

“Who was it Yi-An?” Seungmin asked but she said nothing. She knew that the staff members were always trying to their best and she didn’t blame them. She needed to fix her image, to be the perfect petite female member that all the fans swore they loved.

“Yiji I know you have a wonderful heart and you don’t want to get anyone in trouble but we need to know who it was,” Minho demanded, intertwining his hands with hers.

He knew she was scared and upset but in terms of comfort, this was the most he could do at the moment.

As his fingers laced through hers, she finally broke.

Yiji told them everything. She explained the whole situation and how their assigned staff was forcing her hand at fast weight loss before the come back.

“I’m really sorry guys,” she repeated once more.

“No,” Chan interrupted, “I’m sorry I didn’t realize this sooner. I’m going to fix this so that it never happens again- to any of us.”
