location. ⁺ the diner.
Tumblr media
the spoils of breakfast at the diner was the smell of coffee. reyna found peace walking along the booths wafting in its aroma - fragrant rich in nuttiness. from many adjustments made in the last four years in arcadia - drinking an abundance of tea had been high on the list of things she hated getting used to. before, reyna couldn't perform basic functions without the caffeine intake. she'd be lifeless, roaming earth with knitted brows with a festering migraine. fingers reached, looping around an empty mug from the counter. she turned to a nearby booth empty on one side, occupied on the other. " charlie - " glint of happiness came from seeing the hunter, and the knowing that a cup of coffee would soon be indulged. as reyna slid, occupying the space, her mug was being filled. bliss. the tension from her shoulders eased from the first warming sip. it had taken reyna two and a half years to follow the normal act of breakfast in the diner. before, she'd rely on easy handheld foods. something she could sneak in, and pop out without having to converse with the others. often she wouldn't speak, just nod in passing. " how was it last night ? " sometimes a question reyna hated asking. one she sometimes she answered in a lie. it was easier to say the night carried on fine, than to speak of the haunting voices that tormented.

taking night shifts suited someone plagued by insomnia. reyna never protested the burdens thrust upon her in this godforsaken town. she followed the unspoken rules, kept her head down, and toed the line. watching over the sleeping town often felt more peaceful than enduring the banality of daytime. at night, there was no compulsion to exchange tired pleasantries about the weather — cold, the food —bland, or the activities — all monotonously the same. small talk was tolerable at best, but the repetitive answers wore thin on her tongue.
most nights were uneventful. the townsfolk stayed hidden indoors while the creatures prowled, taunting at windows and doorsteps. it was difficult to ignore their voices — whispers that slipped through cracks and crevices, knowing secrets only you could hold, weaving tales of a life once free from this waking nightmare. they twisted your thoughts until reason unraveled, leaving you teetering on the edge of madness.
it was a battle reyna endured nightly. she found herself oddly relieved each time dawn broke — a fleeting victory in the unending war. to survive another day was the only prayer they had. if one believed in such a thing. at sunrise, she would return to the abandoned cinema she called home, marking another tally on the wall for yet another day lived. four years of such marks, and it was all beginning to feel bleakly absurd. she sometimes wondered what life beyond arcadia would even hold for her. a return to routine ? perhaps. the thought of a life not governed by survival — one free from the constant threat of annihilation — seemed infinitely preferable, even if it meant solitude.
reyna's thumb pressed against the blade of her pocket knife, peeling thin strips from an apple. the morning light crept in, though sleep had eluded her once again. rest was an elusive luxury. from what was now her bedroom window — once the projector’s perch overlooking the silver empty screen — she chewed on a slice of apple, staring out at the silent theater. it was calmer now than the restless night had been. the crunch of the fruit faded as her knife carved another piece. this time, she moved, her footsteps heading toward the cinema’s makeshift kitchen. sleep was meant to restore energy, but with little of that to spare, reyna relied instead on sustenance.
her steps slowed as she entered the main lobby, halting at the sight of another figure. a woman — new to arcadia. reyna recognized her vaguely from arrival. she opened her mouth to speak, only to pause, swallowing the bit of apple that delayed her words. “need something ? or just exploring ? ” she asked, her tone even, though her gaze lingered. curiosity about the town's few landmarks was understandable, but being in her space — shared or not — felt a touch intrusive. still, reyna managed to temper the thought. closing the pocket knife, she slipped it into her front pant pocket, choosing instead to bite into the fruit. no sense in signaling hostility when there was no immediate threat. for now, she simply observed, her guard lowered but not entirely dismissed.
who: @reynahendrix where: the cinema
Day one she'd killed lost her therapist in an accident that clouded her mind from time to time, ached her bones from when the metal scraps had wrapped itself around a tree and left Seraphine for the most part unscathed. Well, physically. She'd been checked for fractures by a medic as Sera had whistled, hummed and was mentally elsewhere entirely when questions were asked about who she was, where she came from and what happened.
Night one she'd spent on the floor of a jail cell, her legs up on the bench, completely out of her mind and unaware of her surroundings. In her mind she was back in the town she grew up in for the rest of the night and even in the first rays of the morning. The church bells tolled in her head, there'd been the flickering of ignited torches and the whispers of the rituals she'd seen as a kid, right there in front of her eyes again. Like a never ending movie - so wrapped in trauma from the events of her life. Never noticing a thing from the so called monsters that spooked the people inside the sheriff's station as long as the night lasted.
Day two was when she got fetched from isolation by a total stranger. Strange girl with her machete. She never got a machete, all she managed to steal was a pocket knife from the guards in the ward. But she couldn't show jealousy. Must not show jealousy over the new girl in the ward, although she very much did. Oh, how she'd wanted to have that machete. Outside the town slowly had dawned on the blonde, how the buildings - she was once so used to - were completely different from the town she once knew so well. Did they change things up? So many unknown faces she passed by - faces that had completely gone unnoticed by her on day one. Until there was only one face left that made sure to leave a mark on Sera's mind. Nika.
Tumblr media
Day five she'd gotten pretty tired of seeing the settlement, of people pretending she was some perfect little sacrifice or some shit. ''These pants fucking itch me, Jane and I hate this vest! Just leave me the fuck alone already!'' Seraphine had spat at the girl that knocked on the bathroom door after she'd just taken a shower and barely got dressed. She tossed the vest at her face when she got out of the door, her hair still a dripping mess. Immediately Seraphine made a run for it, bare feet through the woods to aimlessly go into a direction and see where she'd end up.
For a while she'd been staring at a building, trying to catch her breath in the meantime. She'd only seen buildings like these in all kinds of magazines they got to read in the ward. Never in her life had she been to a theatre, never allowed to. Her brows were furrowed deeply, almost weirded out by this strange feeling that wrapped itself around her ribcage. Was this what freedom felt like? To go wherever she wanted to? To just do...whatever?
Her fingers traced the ticket boot at the entrance of the building when she'd finally gathered the courage to set foot towards it. ''This is so gross,'' she stated the obvious when really what she meant to say was holy shit, this is so cool. One foot crossed the threshold, the other still stood outside. There she stood, in the midst of doubt of entering this place. What if this was another place that wanted to keep her trapped for some time? Well, hell - she was set on sitting in one of those red supposedly heavenly comfortable chairs today.

Hey, hi.
Sooo, I've been rewatching Riptide as you do right? And so I finally got to the episode in which Chip makes his deal with Niklaus and after refreshing my memory on that I do believe that we are entering the point in which Chip has to fullfill his end of the bargain and I'm so fucking worried actually. So first things first let's look at what Mr. Hendrix actually requested from Chip.
So in exchange for returning lost years back to Ollie Chip Has to:
-First: Make the right decision in the hole in the sea.
Arlin is supposedly still trapped below and in great pain. Niklaus for some reason NEEDS Arlin to be kept alive and he wants Chip to keep him alive no matter the consequences which worries me so fucking much. Cause first I was just worried that they are gonna go to the Black sea and find out that there is no way to save Arlin, that he'll die and this will break Chip beyond repair, but now what I'm dreading is that Arlin can't be saved in a way that matters. That Chip will have to make a decision between killing Arlin to let him rest or keep him alive and let him suffer, or even doom the whole world for the sake of preserving his painful existance and that...shit guys, just saying, we're in Black Sea now so brace your fucking selves, we're gonna C R Y. AND THE THING IS if Arlin dies SO DOES CHIP, so he really fucking Has to survive. Cause Chip promised Nik that Arlin survives so even mercy killing Arlin will be breaking a deal and Chip will turn into goop and that's just so damn bad jejdjdjsi
- Second: Supposedly there is an Orb at the hole and he can't touch it. I don't like the way he said it. Nik said sth like "not YOU at least". So what worries me is that he wants someone else to touch it and sth nad will happen because of it, but who then? Gill? Jay? I mean if they find a room with a suspicious object we can kinda count on Gill to touch it immediately, so I'm hoping that Chip doesn't get the chance to interact with it, even if he doesn't remember that he wasn't supposed to. Or maybe sth would happen if Chip touched it? Sth that Nik doesn't want to happen? Either way Chip can't do that now cause if he does he breaks the deal and fucking dies probably, so well shit.
- Third: When the time comes and Nik requests his favor from Gillion, Chip can't interfere. Whatever Nik will have Gill do, Chip can't stop it. He cannot and that of all things I fear will be the hardest thing to do. See, Nik never expected Chip to even come to him. But he was clearly glad that he can use him to shift things in his favor. I feel like whatever dark force turned Sakura into the Black Sea is connected to Alrin's life force and Nik wants the Black Sea to stay. It is messing with the world and unleashing twisted magic into it and I feel like he needs it to stay that way until Gill's time to fulfill his prophecy comes. And whatever Nik wants Gill to do Has a potential to be catastrophic.
Black Sea is definitely not the last chapter, but it's gonna be full of anguish and sorrow. Buckle the fuck up lads, we're in for a ride

Thank you @dykesynthezoid
This seemed fun so I'll try it out 😭
3 ships:
1. Lawrusso- I'm a basic bitch. Leave me alone😭. Come on fam it's rivals mixed in with 35 year history mixed in with in with the problem with toxic masculinity mixed in with breaking the cycle of abuse mixed in with different ways of coping and realizing they aren't healthy (ex: Johnny drinking and Daniel totally thinking that pretending everything is fine or going from 2-10 VERY fast)- Just smacking Lawrusso on the head like " this bad boy can fit so much shit-damn go to therapy together."
2. Samtory- Wanna rewatch the series again and focus on them more really adore them/love their dynamic. Like it's funny walking into the show and seeing Robby and Miguel interacting and going on this is supposed to be our Johnny and Daniel? And then you see Tory and Sam interacting and you're like not only is this supposed to be our Daniel and Johnny but also- hello?👀
3. I have list, but to mix it up with different fandom- Grayghost- Danny, and Val really was that end-game feeling. I remember jokingly saying they had to keep Val out of season 3 as much as possible because if Danny even made eye contact for more than 1 minute, that would be it. It's funny cause they seem like the most natural relationship out of the whole show, yet the one they want people to like last minute is the one they had a whole episode on why they shouldn't be together/not ready for that.
1st ever ship:
Damn- I don't know to judge this one. Cause it can range from anywhere to I thought they should be together when I first saw something or searched content for it. Going with Alice and Kyo from Alice the 19th aka the manga set I found at goodwill at 12-
Tumblr media
I am 1000% sure 12-year-old me should have not been reading this with all the dark shit happening
Last song:
Little too cringe to put here lmao

Little book summary
Take a tour through the horror paperback novels of two iconic decades . . . if you dare. Page through dozens and dozens of amazing book covers featuring well-dressed skeletons, evil dolls, and knife-wielding killer crabs! Read shocking plot summaries that invoke devil worship, satanic children, and haunted real estate! Horror author and vintage paperback book collector Grady Hendrix offers killer commentary and witty insight on these trashy thrillers that tried so hard to be the next Exorcist or Rosemary’s Baby. Complete with story summaries and artist and author profiles, this unforgettable volume dishes on familiar authors like V. C. Andrews and R. L. Stine, plus many more who’ve faded into obscurity.
Last movie:
I was supposed to watch Friday the 13th yesterday
I could be wrong cause my friend and I saw a bunch of movies that weekend but "Lost cat corona," which now has one of my favorite movie quotes said/top 10, aka "HAVE YOU SEEN MY FUCKING CAT?"
Currently consuming:
Crustables and gummies fruit snacks- Because I have the diet of a 4th grader on summer vacation
Currently watching:
Art videos- I like listening to things while drawing, and artists rambling about stories or their own art experiences are one of them.
Currently craving:
Go Go Curry 😭
I'm always so happy when I get to do these things/when people tag me! But feel like I'm annoying when tagging people- Just know you don't have to do this! 😭

reyna’s eyes wandered to nika’s hands — so effortlessly entwined with the essence of nature. tt was the coldest time of the year (however time functioned in arcadia) and as she observed the plants bracing themselves against the bitter chill, reyna mused that, unlike humanity, the earth beneath their feet would always endure. they wouldn’t. sometimes, the thought of surrendering to the shadows of the night, letting everything fall silent, seemed temptingly simple. - but that was absurd, wasn’t it ? even as her thoughts branched and twisted like a growing vine, reyna’s gaze remained fixed on the resilient plant.
“nika.” reyna responded to her name in a voice that mirrored nika’s subdued tone. her hands retreated into the warmth of her jacket pockets, while her core selfishly held onto the fading comfort of the coffee she’d downed at the diner minutes ago. nika — beautifully haunting, enigmatic yet disarmingly direct. she possessed an entrancing aura that reyna instinctively knew concealed sharp edges - reyna withheld judgment; distance was safer. in a place like arcadia, curiosity often led to people slipping through the cracks. once they disappeared, they rarely resurfaced.
“right.” conor. death was a fact of life, especially here, but it always gnawed at something primal when it claimed those who had been pillars of support. it was like removing a load-bearing beam, threatening the collapse of everything around it. was this the moment Reyna was expected to offer a polite 'thank you' for the condolence ? 'sorry for your loss' never quite seemed fitting. the thought tangled her mind, her brows knitting in mild confusion. words felt clumsy and inadequate, so she nodded instead, a silent acknowledgment of the loss.
“how are things on your end ?” she asked, steering the conversation to the settlement. it wasn’t genuine curiosity; reyna justified the question as a gesture of neutrality. after all, arcadia thrived on balance, on still waters. disruptions led to fractures, and fractures led to loss.
who: reyna + nika ( @reynahendrix ) where: forest, outside settlement
There were certain comforts that one enjoyed having been in the same place for twenty years, and one of those comforts that there were rarely things or people she didn't know. She traded favors for information like currency, and made a point of knowing each and every guard, scout, and hunter in the town. Nika catalogued people into three categories: Those that could support their cause, those whose complacency could be used to die for their cause, and those that stood against her. Albeit, that last category was scarcely populated but it required very little to hinder her progress.
When it came to Reyna, Nika had yet to categorize her. Which, after four years, was enough of a reason for Nika to pay attention to her. She found the guard mostly kept to herself, but it wasn't lost to Nika the degree of attention that Reyna paid to her surroundings. Ideally, someone like that could be valuable to the settlement, and therefore valuable to the pattern. Those who cannot see must be shown the way.
So it was that on a rather brisk morning, she stood in the intercepting path of Reyna's patrol, cultivating plants while she waited. She had had Zoa quietly observe her for the last few weeks, knew that today, after a coffee, Reyna would walk a perimeter this way. And so when the woman appeared, Nika had been expecting her.
"Reyna," she acknowledged her with a barely perceptible nod. She finished clipping the stem of a plant and stood up. Not one to beat around the bush, the next sentence out of her mouth was rather lackluster in empathy, "my condolences about Conor, he was a formidable guard."

MUSIC IN THE 60S
Music is what thrives in the 60s. Different genres were being introduced and it was vastly different from the previous decade.
Tumblr media
The 1960's were a time of upheaval in society, fashion, attitudes and especially music. Before 1963, the music of the sixties still reflected the sound, style and beliefs of the previous decade and many of the hit records were by artists who had found mainstream success in the 1950s, like Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Dion, and The Everly Brothers. In 1963 and the years to follow, a number of social influences changed what popular music was and gave birth to the diversity that we experience with music today. The assassination of President Kennedy, the escalation of the war in Vietnam and the forward-progress of the Civil Rights Movement all greatly impacted the mood of American culture and the music began to reflect that change. The "British Invasion" also began around 1963 with the arrival of The Beatles on the music scene and the type of rabid fandom that followed them would change the way people would view and interact with music and musicians forever. In this section we will cover the history of the "British Invasion", Motown and R&B, Folk and Protest music, and the large amount of variation that emerged in Rock music throughout the sixties.
youtube
Tumblr media
The "British Invasion" is the name given to the period of time in the early to mid-1960's, during which many British rock bands and pop artists found mainstream success in the United States and worldwide. Many of these bands first started by covering American songs and showcasing an American Rock 'n' Roll and R&B influence in their sounds. As these bands gained popularity, many of them ventured into new music territory and created their own unique styles. The one band that comes to mind when speaking of the British Invasion is The Beatles, who first broke into the US music scene in 1963, but really became popular in 1964 after appearing on the Ed Sullivan Show. The Beatles dominated worldwide charts from that point in time until they broke up in 1970. The phenomenon that surrounded them was known as Beatlemania and many up and coming music acts emulated their "Liverpool Sound". The band holds many musical records to this day reflecting album sales and number one singles and they're music remains some of the most popular of all time. They can be easily described as the most influential group of the 1960's. Some other notable British Invasion acts include The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Who, Herman's Hermits, Tom Jones, and Donovan, some of whom reached comparable success levels to the Beatles but had different influences on music all together.

what brought you back? the smell of commitment wafting from teddy's scrotum?
“I… What? No. Not every decision I make is based around the actions of others. Y’know, I am capable of choosing my own path yada-yada. Hendrix seemed like the best option for me at the time… fresh start, new tutors, the chance to pick up another language… but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna drop all my friends like Dick Whittington and fuck off to Amsterdam. Corny as it sounds Lockwood’s kinda like home to me. It’s my roosting ground, you know? And that has everything to do with a place and nothing to do with a person.”

her eyes drifted, unfocused— an empty gaze as her thoughts spiraled ahead to what the night lay in store. if she'd bothered to notice anything, it would have been dayn's hand. a sight all too familiar: bloody knuckles. reyna kept silent as the newcomer seated before her stammered out his defense. she couldn't care less who started the fight. “ not much of a fight against someone who can barely stand, ” the guard muttered, exhaling. babysitting duty, again. thirteen years of schooling for a degree, and this was where she’d landed. but then again, arcadia had never been in her plans. what kind of place like this would be ?
we are all fucked. “ there isn’t much daylight left, ” she noted into the still air. escorting them both to medical was out of the question—a risk she knew better than to take after four years here. resting her elbows on her knees, reyna rubbed her hand over her forehead. spending the night with a newcomer and a drunken fool in the bar wasn’t an appealing prospect, but choices were scarce. " what's your name ? " dayn. reyna was aware being a guard. who came in and came out was notable. - but it was his name to share.
experience had taught her to tread carefully around newcomers. they were ticking time bombs. adapting to arcadia’s peculiarities took its toll, and she wasn’t convinced anyone came out the other side of adaptability with their sanity intact. “ think you can sit still while i close the windows ? ” she asked, her voice laced with cautious authority. her gaze held a flicker of unsteady trust—don’t move, don’t provoke. words they’d told her when she first arrived. words she’d failed to heed. “ if you pull something stupid, you’ll put us all at risk. ” her tone hardened. “ - it’ll be more than bloody knuckles you’ll have to deal with. ” a warning about what lurked outside. a promise from the woman who had learned to survive it.
No matter where he went it always seemed to result in him pissing somebody off, or starting a fight somewhere, or something that otherwise got him into stupid kinds of avoidable trouble. The problem was most definitely him, but Dayn refused to take on that kind of accountability.
"He started it, he's the one who's shitfaced," he argued, wrapping a towel around bloodied knuckles, wincing when the sting of alcohol left behind in the fabric hit the open wound. That was one way to disinfect it, apparently. Somewhere in the back of his head, he understood that he had gotten away with similar misdoings in the past, that he had a guardian angel or two looking out for him in the form of inside men on the Milwaukee PD that took pity on him and his extenuating circumstances, but this was a different beast. Nobody knew him here, and he was the newer outsider that was starting up trouble and disrupting the peace... as close to peace as a place like this could get, evidently.
The drunken - or even semi-drunken, but Dayn did serve him at least one - man had his head back with his nose pinched on the far side of the room while Dayn sat in front of a guard (so he had been told), probably here to keep the two of them separated. "C'mon, I'm aware tensions are probably pretty high around here, but starting to tell people how fucked we all are puts a damper on things. So does cutting him off, apparently." *// @reynahendrix

location. ⁺ the church.
Tumblr media
it was an irrational fear that her flesh would begin to burn if she stepped foot into the church. not that reyna had fallen deep into any sins. it was the amount of death she'd seen - here, and before. the light around her had never been bright, or golden. there was always a feeling of decay in shades of blue. faith wasn't ever a part of the woman. she could barely grip onto hope. - and for someone who couldn't quite articulate themself, she hated the sense of being.. seen. it brought an uncomfortable shuffle. " theo ? " the guard tapped hesitantly. pushing the door open, reyna felt a sense of relief seeing the other, knowing she wasn't going to be alone in the holy space with her claustrophobic feelings. " uhm - i found this. " perched in the middle of the road like it symbolized something. not reading into it, reyna stepped forward with caution towards the space like it would bite her. " didn't know if it was yours ? " missing pieces naturally held frustration of something being incomplete. holding out the chess piece, rook, chariot of sorts, reyna handed it over.
reyna barely knew how to play chess. she had a board of her own in her makeshift bedroom of what used to be the projection room of the old cinema. her board didn't hold the purpose of the game. instead, reyna had drilled the game board to the wall, superglued its pieces to act as hangers for her jewelry. surely blasphemy for those who played seriously. - she'd always been innovative with what she had.

plot: nicola’s down at the bar posing as one of the bartenders to interact with the patrons, so your muse can either be aware of who she is because they’re friends or met each other before/it’s your muse’s first time meeting her. anything can go! :)
Tumblr media
staying in her office watching over the club isn’t something nicola like doing some nights, that’s why sometimes she would be down either helping pynk potion’s dj set up a playlist for the night or right now, she’s by the bar mixing drinks for the patrons. it’s one of the things she loves to do, considers it as one of her hobbies. “so, are you a vodka, tequila or whiskey type of person?,” she asks one of the patrons.

⸻ literally. this place literally ate people alive. if those things tucked in the woods didn't tear you to shreds, your own sanity certainly could. reyna hadn't commented on the faint words as she approached the outside of the cinema. her home. she imagined it once was lively. full of community eager for lights to dim, film to roll, and popcorn to pop into moviegoer mouths. a generous thought compared to what the cinema was now. " do you think they tremble ? " sliding over the punch to her title, reyna's hands slipped from her back pockets. she wasn't the type to shine in authority. outside of this town she wasn't ever barking orders. her chest sighed out in attempt to handle the snarky drawl. her reactive stance with zoa was at a minimal. " smoking, or do you just like to burn shit ? " reyna wondered as a matchbook was tucked away in one of her pockets. " i haven't seen your lighter, no, but i can keep an eye out for it. who knows, maybe i'll scare it into view. you know, being a guard and all. " her lips tugged upwards. just slightly.
who: zoa and reyna (@reynahendrix) where: outside the cinema
“god, this place just eats things alive,” zoa mutters under her breath, whisking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, only for it to fight back, falling stubbornly into her face. she exhales, emerald hues dragging over the cracked asphalt. somewhere out here was her lighter. the lighter wasn’t sentimental or special, just useful—and she wasn’t about to leave without it.
boots suddenly come into view. zoa’s gaze follows them up until they land on reyna, one of the guards. one of the better ones, sure, but still a guard.
“wow, you’re really earning that title. bet every monster is trembling while you stand there,” she quips, her tone dry and sarcastic. “have you seen a lighter? tacky as fuck and covered in cherries.” zoa straightens, brushing her hair back again as she meets reyna’s stance. “but it works, making it more valuable than most of the shit here.”

Obnox — Savage Raygun (Ever/Never)
Tumblr media
Savage Raygun by Obnox
Obnox is maybe America’s leading Afro-punk right now, but he’s a lot more than that. In the two-LP Savage Raygun, he once again gathers all the offshoots of Black music—rock, soul, psychedelia, hip hop, punk, electronics and R&B—and brings them together in hazy visions that distill 2020’s smoking wreckage into pure sensation. It doesn’t feel like syncretism, either, but rather the pure force of the African American experience expressed through diverse languages and style. Even the sampled guitar riff from Neil Young’s “Southern Man” (in “Young Neezy”) sounds like it belongs to Nox here, supporting his point that this moment, volatile as it is, reaches back through American history all the way back.
In fact, if you’re looking for a song that encapsulates this summer’s violent energy — as COVID-19 and police brutality and massive protests collide and interact — let me suggest “Underground Timebomb” with its militant beat, its fist-raised chant of “Underground timebomb, below the street that I sit upon,” its ghostly wail of pedal-fucked psychedelic guitars. It’s Jimi Hendrix running into Curtis Mayfield at a punk fundraiser for Black Lives Matter and it could not be more now (or more five years ago or ten or 20, this stuff has been happening for a long time).
Nox rifles through the style book, with a couple of tracks booming and swaggering with early hip hop bravado (“Party Starter,” “How to Build a Bum,” the truly incendiary “Cut Me a Switch”), others floating like the ghosts of punk songs heard through abandoned concrete in abandoned buildings (“Supernatural”), still others essaying a soul falsetto over banged and blasted R&R soundscapes (“Heaven”). There are a few intervals that remind me a lot of Dilla in the way they balance jazz and soul and hip hop in short instrumental bits.
And yet, despite this diversity, Savage Raygun never sounds like a one of each, or a look what I can do kind of record. In fact, its power grows when you listen to it all end to end. It is one howl, one reminiscence, one statement of resilience all the way through. This is not just a good record or an enjoyable record, but a necessary one, the current murk of rage and hope and confusion distilled into blistering sounds.

Various Artists
Woodstock 2
@ 1971 Japan Pressing
*****
After the multi-platinum success of Music from the Original Soundtrack and More: Woodstock that accompanied Michael Wadleigh's documentary film Woodstock (two million copies sold and it spent four consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard charts, and even a Top 20 spot on its R&B chart!), Woodstock Two was inevitable as a sequel. Released as a double LP in 1971 with more stills from the film -- though none of the music here was included -- this set featured many of the same artists who'd appeared on the first volume, with two additions: Mountain, and Melanie. If anything, this set, more concise and more focused, is a better bet than its predecessor. Disc one is a stunner on more than one level. First, there are three tracks by Jimi Hendrix and his expanded lineup after breaking up the Experience (adding guitarist Larry Lee), and a trio of percussionists along with Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox. There's the killer "Jam Back at the House," which rolls in riffs and an instrumental array of tunes from his catalog including "Rainy Day Dream Away"; there's a killer take on "Izabella" that's raggedy but full of killer improvisation -- check the interaction between Cox and Mitchell -- and "Get My Heart Back Together," also known as "Hear My Train A'Comin'." These 20 minutes of music make it worth the purchase of this collection if you don't already possess the Jimi Hendrix Live at Woodstock disc.

Cophine exercise - who falls asleep doing experiments & who covers them with a blanket while making things safe? Who does Kira gravitate to more when they babysit? Do they ever babysit Jemma & Oscar? Who does diapers for Helena's kids? Who pays the bills/deals with the public?
Cosima most definitely falls asleep a lot while working late in the lab, and Delphine starts checking in on her every hour or so once the clock hits midnight. But, I think Delphine wraps her up in a blanket like a li’l Cosima burrito and carries her to the couch in the office off of the lab.
I tend to default thinking of Kira as gravitating towards any of the clones if given a choice (unless Uncle Felix is there). The concept of a little kid trying to process interacting with clones of her mom? And that these women offer a slightly different experience but with the same voice and face? L A Y E R E D
When they watch the Hendrix kids, it’s mostly Delphine teaching them French and playing video games—they’re a lot more removed from the clone situation than Kira and have each other to lean on when figuring it all out.
As for Helena’s kids, they’re a nightmare for the usually pristine Delphine, and I’m currently imagining Delphine going to change a diaper in a full hazard suit, or at least gloves, a lab coat, and protective glasses, because Cosima is with the clone clan out on the town.
Finally, they have all their bills on autopay, but Delphine still double checks everything anyway, JUST in case. Cosima handles the public stuff because Delphine is just over it; she’s had enough attention in her life, thank u.

long post warning !!
hello !! i think i might swap naeva in for somebody else just b/c i’m having trouble getting inside naeva’s head, probably b/c she tries to be rly responsible n like...............i am not responsible. i am nowhere near the realm of responsible. my idea of a good time is trash-diving with possums and running from cops. she drinks tea daily and naps like twice a day. i love her a lot but go crazy aaa go stupid, y’know
so i have a few options if anybody would like to ?? help me figure it out and/or if i should stick it out w/ naeva n become a functioning adult like she tries to be
here r my other three babies i’m considering (TW: mentions of addiction, violence implications, car accident implications.)
saige - liana liberato fc - i created her in 2013 as a drunk pixie and that is. essentially her personality. sort of an optimist ? just very friendly n happy vibes n very much a party gal, if anything she’s sort of an idealist ? puts others before herself, very bubbly, very reckless, she’s got a problem w/ addictive substances in. a few forms. rich but her parents like...are on the verge of disowning her b/c she tarnishes their reputation far too much. takes up as many hobbies as possible b/c she hates being bored. the worse of a person u are the most likely she is 2 be attracted 2 u and that’s like. essentially law. chaotic good, i’d say, she’s v well-meaning but is also a lil ignorant in terms of like...she’s very rich. she’s very irresponsible with her money. i dont think she knows how to do taxes or where her money goes. donates massively 2 charity tho. her mom’s a fashion designer n they dont rly talk much but her mom does send her like. things b4 they go public and saige 100% always gives the items away just 2 fuck w/ her mom lmao. both passive and active like she’s very energetic n while she doesn’t rly take anybody’s bullshit she’s more likely to just laugh it off than retort back unless she’s like super hurt n then i black out and her emotions take over n i wake up and she’s gone thru like fifty paragraphs of angst. shes the love of my life.
annabel - emma mackey/medalion rahimi fc - her original fc is maddie hasson but like ... emma mackey fits her better but also ... i’ve never used medalion and i’m p gay for her so ... - anyways. goes by anna pretty exclusively n will possibly threaten u with actual physical violence if u call her anything else (this does not stop people). ex-ballerina whomstve got into a particularly bad accident n now cannot dance anymore! she has a limp and uses a cane more often than not even when the pain isn’t as bad that day. it also doubles as a weapon if need be (some mf kaz brekker vibes). soft punk but like Secretly Soft. her mom left when she was a kid so she’s always been bitter abt it which ofc led to years of cynicism. she’s v close 2 her dad tho. she can come off as mean but it’s mostly an accident she’s rly honest and also a bit of an insensitive asshole? she’s a writer of both fiction n lyrics b/c that is what she’s happiest doing. a Scammer from an early age lmao. pretended 2 b a girl scout when she was like 12. faked being a psychic the entirety of high school. probably is writing a series abt the shit tht happens in lockwood w/ changed names bc fuck. shit’s juicy. but i may also run into the same problem w/ anna that im in w/ naeva rn so sidofg
maribel - ella purnell fc - an absolute. sweetheart. comes from an air force family so her household has always been rly strict. has always felt rly out of place (middle kid syndrome prolly) and she’s like. very bad at a lot of things. like just absolutely garbage. has two siblings n theyre both real talented but maribel’s very much Not. or like, in anything practical at least. is always getting fired from her jobs like...she goes thru jobs so often...bc she’s so bad at them...she’s so clumsy, too. socially awkward. like she’s so awkward, she’s only rly ever had one friend n they went missing so she’s very bad w/ social interactions. she actually...is rly good at hacking? and forging shit? b/c she wanted to impress the popular kids in her boarding school so they’d like her but they just used her. she makes fake IDs. used to be rly on that nancy drew shit b/c her school was in nevada n like .. aliens, bro. and just general like...being nosy when she shouldn’t be. stopped being on that nancy drew shit after getting caught trying to break into area 51 and disappointing her parents even further. rambles and overtalks a lot. wanted do do smth science-y b/c shes actually rly good n smart at biology n chemistry but her parents were like ew no n she’s doing journalism instead so she complied b/c she doesnt have a backbone. turns into a much more outgoing person when she drinks but she also doesnt drink tht often. prolly used to be a stoner tho.
and then i’m bringing in aleta for hendrix and she’s essentially one of cinderella’s evil step sisters. so i m not sure if i should bring in anna bc they’ve got p similar personalities or being hardheaded n spiteful even if some of their defining experiences make them two completely different people ijsdkfglh. i’m also planning on bringing in cain at some point in the future still !! i just think that the block in my head will be removed if i deal with naeva first.
absolutely am not dropping amos as he is my lifeline. his chaotic energy is what fuels me. if he goes i would probably cease to exist. i may go on a semi-hiatus for this week just so i can sort out what i’m doing with naeva but amos will be pretty solid just b/c he’s always verging on nonsensical.
tl;dr - help me pick a new character b/c my brain doesn’t work very well !

Hip Hop History: Top Ten Soulquarian Tracks
Words by Lily D’Amato
Neo-Soul’s popularity rose to its peak in the mid 1990s, coinciding with the genesis of the Soulquarians. The Soulquarians were a hip hop/soul collective centered around neosoul “it boy” D’Angelo, songwriter and producer James Poyser, The Root’s ?uestlove, and Slum Village’s producer J Dilla.  Initially interacting at informal jam sessions and parties at the Black Lily nightclub in Philadelphia, D’Angelo and ?uestlove decided to relocate to Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village to begin work on D’Angelo’s second studio album, Voodoo.  Erykah Badu, the rest of The Roots, Common, and a plethora of other neo-soul artists would soon follow the duo, each working on projects of their own.  The collaboration led to the creation of some of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90s, including Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun and The Roots’ Things Fall Apart.  Although the Soulquarian Era had mostly dissipated by the early 2000s, its impacts have reverberated to contemporary hip-hop and R&B, influencing artists like Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and The Internet.
Send it On - D’Angelo
Send it On’s tight harmonies, deeply personal lyrics about faith in love, and unforgettable groove make it one of D’Angelo’s best tracks. Co-written by D’Angelo’s ex-girlfriend Angie Stone and his brother Luther Archer, the song peaked at number 33 on Billboard’s Top 100.  One Billboard Magazine reviewer highlighted the development of D’Angelo’s distinct vocal style “which bears an undeniable resemblance to Prince, Al Green, and Otis Redding.” Roy Hargrove’s flugelhorn bolsters the velvet-like smoothness of the song and offers new texture to the song’s heavy bass section.  Complex and absorbing, listening to Send it On is like being inundated with harmony from every direction.
Erykah Badu - Bag Lady
Bag Lady, Badu’s first single since her 1997 album Baduizm, uses a seemingly ordinary story to explore themes of “self-love, self-discovery, unrequited love, gender conflict and communication, emotional and psychological bruising, failure, redemption, and personal fulfillment for black women.”  The sparse percussion section and sleek guitar sample from Dr. Dre’s ”Xxplosive” interact with Badu’s creamy vocals to emphasize the subject matter, alternating between moments of empowerment and moments of tragic, intimate honesty. The video that accompanies the song alludes to Ntozake Shange’s 1975 drama For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, criticizing the racialized inadequacies of public education in America.
The Roots - Double Trouble
The creation of Things Fall Apart, The Root’s 1999 studio album, began when ?uestlove played Premier, Dilla, and D’Angelo “Double Trouble” and was underwhelmed by their reactions.  Tenacious in his quest for their respect, he went ahead and made “Double Trouble” one of the best tracks The Roots have ever created. He re-recorded the drum loop and fiddled with the EQ to give it an air of separation, providing rapper’s Black Thought and Mos Def with what Pitchfork’s Michael Moore describes as a “hard charging instrumental to match [their] verbal dexterity.”
Common - Song for Assata
Produced by James Poyser, Song for Assata narrates the life of Black Panther Assata Shakur. Assata Shakur, who was convicted of the murder of a New Jersey State Trooper in the early 70s, escaped prison in 1979, living in Cuba under political asylum since 1984. The song features CeeLo Green, who was, at the time, a member of the Atlanta hip hop group Goodie Mob.  His beautiful, melodic chorus comes in stark contrast to Common’s violent bars, which describe Assata’s story in an effort to “make this movement towards freedom/For all those who have been oppressed/and all those in the struggle.”  The social activism that characterizes Song for Assata makes it one of the most significant Soulquarian tracks, showcasing the group’s political and cultural ideology and their desire to bring about systemic change.
The Roots - Step into the Realm
Things Fall Apart is widely accepted to be The Root’s most fully realized record to date. The oscillating drum loop on Step into the Realm, the fourth track off the album, makes the bars “even more urgent... [and introduces an atmosphere] of chaos” says Pitchfork writer Marcus Moore.  The juxtaposition between the clarity of the drums and the distorted vocals creates drama that makes the song exciting, mildly terrifying, and addictive. This track leads The Root’s into a new psychedelic sound, rerouting them momentarily away from jazz towards the current of 90s hip-hop.
Slum Village - What it’s All About
Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol. 2 was finished under A&M Records in 1998, just before the label went bankrupt, leaving the group in a lerch for over a year.  Finally, the album was released with Good Vibe Recordings and Barak Records in early 2000 and was well received by critics and listeners alike.  Sampling Alicia Meyer’s Don’t Stop What You’re Doin’, What’s It All About, produced solely by J Dilla, features Busta Rhymes at his finest.  Self assured and playful, his bars rest perfectly between the serene siren like vocal sample and distorted adlibs, allowing for Dilla’s beat, arguably the real star of the show, to shine through.
D’Angelo - Chicken Grease
Originally slated for Common’s Like Water For Chocolate, Chicken Grease embodies the relaxation and ease which its lyrics promote.  Supposedly named after a term coined by Prince in reference to strumming chords in a specific 16th note pattern, the song serves as Voodoo’s integrative centerpiece. Pino Palladino’s bass and harmony epitomize the quintessential “in the pocket” rhythm section that has become the defining characteristic of Neo-Soul, delicately cradling D’Angelo’s subtle overdubbed vocals.  Funky and spiritualized, Chicken Grease’s analog rhythm and seemingly simple yet wildly brilliant theme exemplifies the best aspects of the Soulquarian era.
Erykah Badu - Green Eyes
Green Eyes, an agonizing ten minute three part meditation on Badu’s breakup with OutKast’s Andre 3000 in 2000, broadcasts her vulnerability, shedding the overconfident facade she broadcasted on Baduizm.  In the first section of the song, Badu almost protects her usual smug attitude, but ultimately reveals her disillusionment in the second movement, while supported by feathery symbols and a quiet but driving percussion section.  The third part, which uses horns to accentuate a more propulsive rhythm, sees Badu slightly more empowered but relatably confused. Green Eyes’ transparency humanizes Badu’s self-righteous persona, combining her musical virtuosity with an captivating sense of self.
Common - The 6th Sense
The 6th Sense, released in 2000, opens with the lyrics “the revolution will not be televised”, referencing the Gil-Scott Heron song of the same name and advancing Like Water For Chocolate’s clear political and social agenda.  The first single off the album, the song is often heralded as one of Common’s classics; Pitchfork writer Taylor Clark agrees, noting that “Common gets iller than Syphilis over an addictive track provided by Gang Starr’s DJ Premier.” The song also features Common’s fellow Soulquarian Bilal on the chorus, using his lofty vocals to underscore the weight of his messages concerning afrocentricity and the harsh reality of life on the street.
Mos Def - Know That
Black on Both Sides, released in October of 1999 by rapper Mos Def, deals with the socio economic issues facing African Americans, offering a positive yet sobering take on urban reality and notably departing from the increasingly violent undertones of contemporary gangsta rap.  Featuring Talib Kweli and sampling their joint album Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star, Know That articulates a tangible confidence through Mos Def’s decisive rhymes and lyrical complexity.  In one line, he raps “The streets is watchin me, I watch back, that's the policy”, indicating a sense of mutual respect and reverence placed on the shoulders’ of black rappers and musicians, specifically those with as much cultural prowess as the Soulquarians, by their home communities. The ostinato on the keys, ever present record scratching, and call and response between Def and Kweli towards the end, makes Know That groovable, insightful, and infectious.
Although the Soulquarian Era had mostly dissipated by the early 2000s, its impacts have reverberated to contemporary hip-hop and R&B, informing more critical analysis of hip-hop by professional and casual listeners alike. The inclusion of intricate lyrics, analog rhythms, and a prominent social justice tenor in the music of Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, and The Internet cement neo-soul’s legacy, legitimizing its influence in the popularization of rap and hip-hop.
