i am so sorry for the long ask but i am always thinking about bruce’s line in detective comics #790 before the 🤢 victim blaming “he loved cars and girls and getting into fights… neapolitan ice cream and the color green… and most of all the thrill of being robin.” i have turned over every part of this line in my head for ages but here is one aspect

girls: pre crisis? during robin days he did have a gf for a bit named rena, essence and isabel in rhato, rose wilson, idk about red hood: the hill. but even with non romantic relationships he has sasha and duela and kori and artemis and talia (ignoring you know what) and the no longer canon natalia knight motherhood thing vs like roy and bizarro as the guys he hangs out with outside of bats and he even points it out “i feel closer to that big white lump of clay than, well, any guy ive ever known. yeah i knew roy and dick since i was young. but since ive been back? from the dead? hes the first guy friend ive made.” talking about bizarro in rhato and i dont put too much stock in rhato but he really does seem to consistently get along better with women. i dont fully think it is that he finds them less threatening cuz in task force z he was happy to hold his own against multiple bat boys but the second cass showed up he was like oh shit shes scary, plus like sheila is the reason he died and you would think that her betrayal would be a huge part of any ptsd or trust issues he no doubt has. but he also has that line after he and artemis kiss where he says something to the effect that it was a good kiss for a girl and that just… what do you mean by that jason? because you have spent the past lord knows how many issues (with the same writer) kissing isabel and looking back somewhat fondly on your time with essence and while readers can think you have very little chemistry with them the story being told is that all that was cool and good and within the norm for you. so like what does that line in your narration mean jason? if it isnt something you are into than why have you been going around kissing women in multiple instances jason?

Okay, so Jason’s line (“But it was nice. For a girl.” in reference to his kiss with Artemis) comes from Red Hood: Outlaw #41:

Which is actually him remembering events that occurred in Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) #25:

Here, Jason asks Artemis what she thinks of their kiss, and Artemis says, “It was okay, for a boy.”

Honestly, my (somewhat boring) interpretation of the line in RHO #41 is that Jason is referring tongue in cheek back to Artemis’ quip in RHATO #25. I don’t think it was actually meant to be commentary on his sexuality.

That said, imo, Jason Todd doesn’t really seem like the kind of person who would feel the need to limit their sexuality to artificially constructed binary categories of gender … YMMV 😏

Hello! I love your blog. Seiously one of the best. So... I was watching batman vs robin animation and when i saw the talon's face my brain just went " That's Ezio!" So what if he was a talon in modern day?

Mebey he had the same backstory just like the game but this time the templers found out sooner that he is the prophet so they just lied to him and made him to join them. He never undrestood it was templers behind his family's death and became a templer. But... if he was living around 500 years ago he would've become like talons in batman court of owls comic series which they were like... a little mindless. So we set up Ezio in modern day. A powerfull family that had just come to Gotham from Italy. Idk what to do with this senario. Send help. 🦇👊

This is very similar to the Talons idea that I had and also @fanworldbuildingfun and @twitcherpated have another take for this idea

Just a few additions, we do need Ezio to have Flavia for Desmond to be born so I would suggest that Ezio be taken by the Templars and sent to the Court of Owls (which has already been established at this point) to take him and make him one of the Talons.

How?

They took Ezio when he was at his weakest. To be more exact: the very last scene of Embers where he canonically died, only this time, he was overpowered and lost consciousness.

So, in this scenario, Sofia and Flavia don’t see Ezio dead, he goes missing.

From there, Ezio could be one of the first Talons who were preserved this entire time. Then… the Court of Owls got their hands on the Lazarus Pit and they revive all the old Talons, including the Talon only known by the name ‘Prophet’.

So, in this case, Ezio would be a Talon who did everything order of him because his memories are a bit… jumbled together.

During that time, the League of Assassins have infiltrated Gotham to take back whatever remains of the liquid the Court have taken from the Lazarus Pit and destroy every research, mentions and anything related to the liquid.

This is where we can add Desmond as the modern day Assassin representative. Either:

Talia’s twin brother Desmond

Desmond as part of Batman’s Rogues Gallery by virtue of him assassinating bad guys goes against Batman’s no killing code

Desmond being part of the League of Assassins helping Young Justice

Desmond runs away from the Farm and gets adopted by Bruce Wayne

Or, you know, just make the Brotherhood a separate organization from the League and Desmond suffers through all the Animus BS but doesn’t die from the Solar Flare because there are so many superheroes who could take care of that XD

Regardless, the main point is that Desmond is the trigger to return Ezio to his senses.

Because Ezio remembers seeing Desmond in Altaïr’s library.

And that would become the trigger for Ezio to be taken out of the Court’s control.

Or…

If you really want Ezio to be born in modern day, he’s an Assassin who went missing when he infiltrated Gotham because they learned that the Templars were moving in and out of Gotham for the past month. He’s been missing for over a year and this is the part where you can mix up who will be the trigger to return Ezio to his senses.

This is purely on the side of AU now, so it could be any of his siblings who came to find him. Maybe even Giovanni who quit his high ranking rank in the Brotherhood to find his son. Maybe all of them? Just hammer in the fact that the Auditore family love one another so much (and twist the knife on Bruce’s own past while you’re at it). Hell, it could even be a pairing you like for Ezio XD

The interactions between Damian and everyone are chef’s kiss. He’s difficult because he’s a kid but he’s not a kid and he deeply respects his father and Robin but at the same time he’s really angry at everything that brought him here. My little guy <3 he’s also effortlessly funny and I love him for that. Also love love love how much you write Bruce’s pov as hesitant bc all he sees is Talia’s child.

Roy :( I love me some Dick and Roy interactions (& Jason, ik people don’t like RHATO but I feel like a Jason-Roy friendship would be fun!). Donna masterminding them being w each other bc they both need it is also very funny and very on point. Fab five ilysmmmmm

Jason’s anger at Dani’s dad and how he went about it… I’m sure this will have no consequences ^_^ just so well written tho, Jason’s anger at Dani’s dad feels sm like his anger at what’s his name did you push did he fall guy from comics. Blind red rage. As opposed to UTRH Jason who’s definitely more calculating and cold in his fury.

I’m also so interested by that kid in the sewers? I think I might know who he is but I don’t want to embarrass myself so I won’t say anything 😭 bc he might just be some kid or an oc lolll

Steph and Jason’s friendship is so dear to me. The way you’re writing their anger and them fighting but they still quite clearly care deeply about each other, the Halloween party (w song), Steph trying to let Jason be his own person — it’s so good because it feels so real. Also you’re letting both characters breathe into being their own people. Really good stuff.

i saw that you were welcoming infodumps that relate to dracula! i have a not so fun fact about bram stoker and oscar wilde to share :)

so. we know for a fact that wilde was invited to a bunch of dinners at the lyceum theatre. we know stoker wrote those invitations, and it's overwhelmingly probable that he was also responsible for making the guest list. we have tons of evidence showing that stoker was pretty close friends with wilde's parents. basically, we may not know the specifics of their relationship-- we have no solid evidence that justifies saying they were close-- but we do know they knew each other. they hung out in the same circles, their families were friends, stoker presumably chose to invite wilde to all his cool club dinners, and wilde certainly kept in touch with florence.

wilde also adored both henry irving and ellen terry, the leading players of the lyceum, so he found a lot of excuses to visit the theatre. he and stoker shared a passion for walt whitman's poetry. they went to the same university, where stoker recruited wilde to the philosophical & historical society-- though wilde was never a particularly active member. all this to say that wilde was definitely, inarguably, someone who had a presence in stoker's life.

in stoker's only work that can be even remotely considered autobiograpical, which is actually a biography of his boss + allegedly close friend henry irving (titled personal reminiscences of henry irving; wouldn't recommend it, it's not exciting reading), he never mentions wilde. not once. not even when he just straight up lists all the famous people who visited the lyceum theatre.

the book was published after wilde's conviction for gross indecency. there's no record of stoker voicing any opinion about the trials or the conviction-- no public outrage, no public mourning. nothing. wilde's brother wrote to him about the whole ordeal, but there's no evidence stoker ever replied. ellen terry was vocally supportive of wilde. author hall caine, to whom Dracula is dedicated (under the petname hommy-beg), expressed shock and grief and moral outrage. but as far as we can tell, stoker said nothing.

to me, that's one of the loudest silences in history. the only indication of an opinion we ever get is that some years later, he published some articles arguing for the moral benefits of censorship of plays and novels.

florence kept the letters wilde had written her till her dying day, though. apparently her family was convinced she could have prevented the tragedy if she had just married wilde instead of stoker, which is..... certainly some kind of take lmao

(most of this info is taken from Barbara Belford's biography on Stoker plus Talia Schaffer's article on the influence Wilde had on Dracula. they both end up... idk, sort of trying to psychoanalyze a guy who's been dead for a century in a pretty invasive way that kinda skeeved me out? but all the claims i'm repeating here are pretty well substantiated by historical sources, which both authors were very good at tracking down. i know i probably don't need to cite my fucking sources in a tumblr ask or explain why i'm choosing to rely on flawed sources but it's the grad school brainworms i can't help myself)

I mean after the whole.. Tarantula thing (😬) he really strikes me as the type of guy to ask "Can I have a kiss?" Every single time he wants to kiss you, and "Hug?" Every time he wants a hug. The kinda guy that tries his best to ask whenever he touches you, "Can I put my hand here?" "Can I kiss you there?" "Is it okay if I take this off?" And, while he won't necessarily set it as a boundary, he appreciates when you do the same for him.

Because I feel like if his partner was ever all "Stop, it's too much..-" During intimacy, even though they probably meant it in the 'Don't-actually-stop-these-feelings-and-sensations-are-just-really-overwhelming-and-that-was-my-automatic-response' kinda way, he absolutely would. 100%.

Because he's heard those words before. He was the one saying them. And she didn't stop. And he wants to avoid ever making anyone else feel like that, even if he knows his partner probably didn't mean it that way.

Hi, this is the Bruce and Jason anon again and you're completely right! Tim and Kon's situation is very different from Bruce and Jason's because Tim was like...literally trying to engineer a perfect replacement for someone he lost ON PURPOSE. Which is just completely fucking crazy from start to end. Especially when Kon, as a clone himself, struggled in the past with the idea of being created in a lab explicity to perfectly replace another person, then ending up not being identical/perfect enough to do that and having to learn to become his own person instead, not just superman 2.0. Like Tim was actually insane to still try and clone him while actively KNOWING all of this about his best friend and still deciding to go ahead and become the cadmus/lex luthor in this poor clone's story.

Also with the benefit of being able to actually know what happened while Jason was dead, how Bruce grieved, the whole messy process of how Tim actually became Robin, etc. through the comics, I agree that Bruce wasn't necessarily wrong. What I was mainly talking about was Jason coming back from the dead without any knowledge of how much of a wreck Bruce was when he was gone and seeing the product of that grief without any of the context.

Like Jason checks back in on his dad after maybe a year or two (idk comic timelines) and there is just a full ass new child (around the age jason was when he died no less) living in Jason's house, swinging round Gotham in Jason's old suit colours using Jason's vigilante name (the suit he died in, the name that he died for). He even LOOKS like Jason with his black hair a blue eyes. And because of the severe lack of context Talia provides, from the outside it's exactly as if Jason has been replaced, not grieved. Like when TV shows recast one of their main actors and the story continues on without stopping to acknowledge that anything is out of the ordinary. As if this new person has been here the entire time and the old one never existed at all.

Jason was also having problems with Bruce before he died so seeing this shiny new Robin take his place (and actually be good at it) is just so heartbreaking. Again, without knowing anything about Bruce and Tim's relationship, to Jason it'd seem like Bruce just got a shiny new sidekick that was Robin in all the ways B wanted and valued, all the ways Jason wasn't. It's worse when Dick, who Jason had a pretty strained relationship with, is all over the new guy in a way he never was with him. It mirrors what you were saying about Tim making the version of Kon that loved him in the way original-Kon didn't. Obviously not what happened to Bruce and Tim but WE know that not Jason

The third part doesn't really fit them so much, the only thing I can think of is Jason coming to the realisation that Bruce didn't actually care about him, or Dick, that he probably didn't even care about the new kid either. Like Tim and his clones, Robins all eventually get discarded and thrown away when they don't meet B's standards, when they're not perfect enough. It's what Bruce and Dick used to fight about all the time too, before Jason died. Has Steph been Robin yet by the time Jason comes back? Idk. It would certainly add to that idea. Child after child, in the middle of gun fight after gun fight. What kind of a monster does that? So Jason decides to put it to the test. How much does Bruce actually care about Robin? He certainly didn't seem to care when Jason died, but maybe that's too small of a sample size. There needs to be multiple test trials. If Batman thinks so little of his sidekicks, if he's really going to be so careless with them, then he should to be prepared to lose a few.

he came back to see that someone was occupying the space the grief and pain would have been in, someone else was pushing his ghost away, living his life, being loved by his father, being cared for by his brother, someone better at his job than he ever was, cold and smart where he was rash and angry, he came back to see that he was not only replaced, him being dead made things better

ofc, this wasnt true, his death nearly destroyed bruce, and it took a lot of effort to get him to feel human again cause he had lost his son, but jason didnt know that, as u said

meanwhile, i love the new 52 tim, i think hes tragic in a visceral way, and i love how his pain is so easy to feel, but in a way im glad we dont really talk about that era too much and usually act like its not relevant to the canon cause... its hard to justify tim being a good person in the new comics after reading the 2015s one

like, tim failing to clone kon doesnt justify him actually trying to replace his dead best friend who struggled with his place in the world, and i think the writers recently realized if they want tim to be a dark but brave hero they cant also make him morally corrupt at best and absolutely insane, theres a difference between red robin desperately trying to find batman and being a rude mess in the process and red robin basically experimenting with lives

I initially wanted to post a whole paragraph about plot twist ideas/arcs for my WIP for this, but then again, I also wanna talk about APS fun facts, but then again again, the question is asking to share only one thing, so now I have to actually make a choice and commit. :P.

I think I’ll do the second option, so here are some random APS fun facts:

The very first version of APS was some novel I wrote 3 years ago that was set in Japan (I was a huge weeb at the time and it was so cringey) and the plot was wildly different and honestly so convoluted. I tried to take the premise of “superhumans discovered by government and go through dystopic hell” and “secret underground superhuman organization that basically fights off ‘bad guys’” and mush them together. Turns out, you can’t have two main premises at once (at least for me). One of them could have been a side-premise/subplot of sorts, but nooo. I had to mash them together and squeeze them into one book to the point where the plot switched from one plot idea to the next (ex: I set up the story as a “superhumans discovered by gov’t” plot and then completely flipped it on its head and forgot the other premise halfway through). It was a hot mess. A flaming mess. I deleted that book entirely and decided to change everything about it (except the title). That was a much better decision.

Caster was supposed to be the love interest of another random side character. Decided against it later because I don’t wanna center the story too much around romance. Caster’s also aroace and not interested in any kind of relationship, it wouldn’t really be fitting anyway. Idk, the idea just didn’t stick.

There was supposed to be a scene in chapter 6(?? Was it 6?) — the one where there’s a street brawl and someone chokes and dies — where Talia actually steps in to do something. All she manages to do is splash water in one of the perpetrator’s/instigator’s faces. I only wrote that because I thought it was funny, but I took it out later because it created a big character inconsistency

APS was supposed to be a book series with dual-POVs throughout (ex: Caster and Talia for the first book, Melissa and Cassian for the second, etc. etc.) I eventually scrapped that because the second POV either became useless to the book or it could have another whomp story all by itself without sharing the story with a perspective of another character.

At one point, I planned APS to be a 6-10 book series with so many fucking prequels and sequels and companion novels. I scratched that entirely because, seriously, it was so unnecessary to have that much for no good reason at all. The plot would be too stretched and convoluted if I kept it as a 6-10 book series, and after revamping the plot events, I realized I only needed three books to tell the whole story.

To build off the previous one: I do have a slight “spinoff” series of APS called APP (A Powerful Past). It’s more of just individual books covering pieces of backstory/lore in more detail, but that’s a side-series, so it’s pretty much it’s own thing. I’m only gonna work on it after APS is finished, so for now, the most I do to work on APP is to add to any thought dump pages.

I like to think she got a ton of success from that. Though I don’t think Constance could ever think what is said in What the World Needs, even if she isn’t the nicest girl in town this time.

You can’t tell me Space Age Bachelor Man isn’t romantic. “I have no desire to rule the galaxy, oh, to hold you close is enough for me” - come on!! SABM is their Monique Gibeau. I think they and Noel’s characters would roughly stay the same, just different titles. Both can fit into the others title if it’s in the right context, yknow?

Penny Lamb / Savannah Crawford - The Angriest Girl in Town

Moving to a new town can be very stressful. Moving to a dead-end town and having to attend a Catholic school in a choir,, is probably twice as much. (Now I have nothing against Catholics, you do you, but I hear a LOT that Catholic schools are not the best place to be.) And what does stress lead to? Most commonly if not to depression, it’s rage.

19. Introduce an OC that means a lot to you (and explain why)

Ohh man. I could really say any of the parental figure OC's, because my parents were miserable to me growing up and I try to write characters who are more like the parents I would have liked to have growing up. But if I'm picking one of the bunch to talk about, it's Talia.

So my relationship with my mother was even worse than my relationship with my father. Not that it's much of an achievement, because they were both terrible. My mother in particular was incredibly critical of my appearance, my choices, my performance, everything. For a young "girl", this really manifested in constant comments about my weight, hair, clothes, the way I acted "boyish" and didn't cross my legs, etc.

Ultimately, I think it comes out in my writing because I definitely have way more fatherly figures in my works than mothers. So Talia is really special to me. We don't get to really interact with her directly much, since she's gone by the events of Ride or Die, but she is still very much present in the story through the positive impacts she had on others.

She's so strong in her convictions, and her sense of justice. She loves her son even when he makes mistakes, or doesn't end up being quite what she expected. She is, in the end, able to let him make decisions for himself, even if it tears him away from her.

Talia waited so long for a son she loved with every fibre of her being. She was afraid of his power, but knew the alternative to handling it was losing him, so she tried so hard to do what was best for him until it became too much for him to control. Only then does she seek out the Jedi, even though she is terrified of being separated, she lets him make the decision to go.

I think it's just kind of beautiful, and sad. I wish I had the power to make decisions for myself as a child, and that my parents would have respected that. That's something Talia embodies to her core.

28. Your most dangerous OC?

Hmmmm. This one made me think. The obvious choice might be one of my Jedi characters (NAJ, JKL, MXW) because they are obviously Force wielders, therefore more powerful. Then we have a couple of characters who we know are capable fighters, but do not have the Force (Renson, Vanyiel, Theo, Talion, Talia, Reegale). I think, honestly, another factor would be "if this weren't a 1-on-1 fight, who has the most destructive capabilities", and that pulls Theo and Renson towards the top, because Theo commands an army and Renson is part of the Emperor's Red Guard.

But under that logic, I would have to pick HRH. Renson is under their command, and I think at the end of the day, if HRH wants someone or something dead, HRH gets it. They have the entire might of the Emperor behind that.

We know this has to be Dralla. This has her written all over that. She loves secretly getting herself into dangerous situations and not telling anyone else about it.

Not to be a massive tease, but I've found a bunch of OLD artwork of OC's of mine, some of whom never even made it into print, so to speak. Many of them are just Pau City citizens of sorts, which might make them... ideal for adaptation and insertion into other, more recent works.

i think a lot about if talia’s life would have been any different if her parents had lived , if her life might have been any different. what the person she became , might have been like? or if she would have even became a blood hunter? and i think the answer to that question is always a yes. balun ashwood was a prideful man , and despite isabella’s pleas for a different life for her daughter, it wouldn’t have mattered. i do think, in a way talia would have mirrored her mother very much. talia’s looks are already similar to her mother , if not nearly identical. Isabella was a cleric, and a very caring , soft-hearted woman. but i also think, Isabella’s life was a very lonely one. balun and her traveled for a very long time together , and i think in his own way he did love Isabella, but it was never in the way she loved him. and i think that was what eventually resulted in isabella and tarran ( the man would eventually see to balun and isabella’s end and even talia’s eventual one?? ), falling for one another behind balun’s back? tarran, balun, and othid had been raised as brothers. and i think since the beginning, isabella had always loved tarran truly,  but balun was the safe choice, he was the one that could ensure a future for her and their future family. but there was never denying what she felt for him, and eventually they acted on that.  after Isabella became pregnant with Talia, balun continued to adventure while Isabella returned to the family home , and would even eventually give birth to their daughter alone. i think with isabella, there’s always been a question of who talia’s true father was, and i think that played a part of what drove tarrran to eventually let his jealously, his madness take him like it did. talia was everything her mother wanted , she was truly her mother’s entire world, and they had a very short four years together before balun and isabella were murdered. isabella spent her very last few minutes protecting talia, hiding her away to protect her.  i think in a lot of ways, talia would still very much be talia. she would be just as witty, just as strong in her resolve. but i think there would have been even more pressure than she carries now to live up to not only her father’s name, but the expectations that he would have placed upon her. but i think there would have been more softer things she loved in life, like attending balls, and i think she would have developed a love for the arts, like her mother had. the pair of them, spending their afternoons in the gardens, painting together and sharing beautiful moments, when talia was not forced through training, or adventuring with her father. i think she would have had a taste for lavish things in life, but not necessarily in a way that would make her spoiled. she would have loved fined dresses and jewelry. and there’s no doubt she would have a love for sweets ( there’s still a bit of her that lives in her ).    and i’ve thought about if talia would ever make their family castle , hers? if she would rebuild it from the ruins , but i think that answer is always going to be a no. there are too many ghosts that linger there. i don’t know that talia would ever be capable of really settling anywhere. i think she firmly believes that she’s never growing to grow old , and that her life is going to be cut short by doing the one thing she knows, and that’s hunting monsters. i think that reality set in even more to her after she’s lost her powers and experienced death. there are a lot of things that change after that, but i do not think that is something that will ever change.

maybe it's my bubble of fellow "lives have been wrecked by infedelity" fanfic writers but i don't know anyone who actually sees it as healthy or anything but either one-sided or big cheating-on-his-mission-for-Justice vibes. Batman doesn't deserve a healthy relationship because he's ruined his loved ones lives. So he's stuck with the creepy stalker that's obsessed with him. I know like 3 other writers w this viewpoint, not every ship is all UWU, sometimes toxic ships are fun. It's not flattening Bruce, it's adding complexity and inner turmoil, but it also assumes you're working with a view of Bruce most of the fandom doesn't share because everyone loves Batdad, idk. Just tossing in my 2 cents.

I also wrote a whole thing creating Jeannie as a fully fleshed character outside of "Mrs. Napier" so don't say it's something about erasing women, maybe on some subconscious level that I need to work on, but I do try to counter it with fleshing out other female characters. I enjoy Talia & Selina but Bruce is fundamentally a fucked up guy and he rlly only deserves a fucked up ship. Idk.

i went back and forth on whether or not i wanted to respond to this jokingly or seriously or even at all, considering theres So Many Other Things I Could Do With My Limited Time On This Earth, but honestly you as a person seem infuriating in a very specific, Jerking Off On The Page Never Read A Comic Donated To AO3 Harry Potter Fan-type way and im sort of diametrically opposed to you because of this so i will formulate a "brief" response.

putting it out there first and foremost: i really don't care all that much because i'm an adult and i have other fucking shit to do, but comics is an industry that i am both passionate about and want to work in, so i think i'm granted a little bit of bitching about misinterpretation of characters, considering i want to Actually Write Them For A Living at some point.

for starters i notice that you changed what i said about joker from sexual predator to serial murderer. hmmmmmm. could it be that that is a line you realize shouldn't be crossed?

that aside, the reason i bring up jason ties into why your approach (an approach shared by many) to bruce wayne is fundamentally flawed. bruce wayne is a man who had nobody, and then gradually accumulated a network of strong support systems that are more important to him than anything else. i mean that. really, from a character standpoint, bruce died in that alleyway with martha and thomas - everything from there until meeting dick was him going through the motions. living death. but dick changed things! it gave him a person to care about! it gave him responsibilities outside himself! it forced him to be a caretaker! albeit, in the early years, he wasn't a very good one, but he did try.

and we can see that attitude continued in his relationship to jason - when jason dies, bruce changes. i've talked before about how death in the family changed not just batman, but batman comics tonally and thematically, but jason's death really marked a point where bruce closed himself off from people again. all of this reinforces the fact that for bruce, he is fundamentally a man that claims to work alone while actually being surrounded by friends and family.

to bruce, compassion is key. compassion in EVERYTHING. with your family and with your criminals.

you want drama between bruce and jason? their story is already rife with it. literally just read under the red hood and you'll see, nothing there needs to change or have Drama inserted.

also, this comic is really funny and antithetical to your They Belong Together point because bruce explicitly says he fucking hates the joker so much.

and man, i dont even know where to start with this paragraph, it's just so goddamn funny. hey. you know you sound insane, right? you know that? you know you're shooting yourself in the foot? i didn't say a goddamn thing about erasing women. you said that. that's an issue you recognized in yourself. it's not one i won't say is there - i could go on for hours about the discarding of canon female love interests (canonically bisexual female love interests in the case of selina and canonically love interests who are both woc! hmmmm) out of misogyny, but i won't because it seems like you've kinda got that front covered.

and, again, cause i can't say this enough: bruce's friends and family are the most important thing to him and he will always prioritize them. he loves them.

just as an afterthought, framing bruce as "fundamentally fucked up" is kind of weird to do. i mean, i have my problems with framing any hero as "what if they were evil, actually" (the least of which being that i think it's pretty fuckin boring) but this post does a pretty good job of summing up "is bruce wayne really a good guy?" (the answer is yes)

anyway, you want to ship bruce with a sexual abuser who murdered his son and ruined his life? i can't stop you. but i do urge you to think critically about the character decisions you're making there and step outside of your fanfiction echo chamber and into the wonderful world of comics for once. if you need recommendations on where to start for good bruce characterization, i've got plenty.

anon from before here again, I honestly agree with you, at this point they should just start their own channel if they're gonna do so many videos together because I feel like every day I get a Simon and tahlia video in my recommended. I subscribed to simon not him and his girlfriend.

this is probably a controversial opinion but I believe she only got a spot performing at the summertime ball because she's Simons girlfriend. I literally never heard of her until they started dating. might be off the mark with that one but I just don't understand how she landed that gig.

as for the faith thing, I'm the exact same age as her and that makes me feel IFFY. things definitely moved very fast with them and I just hope it doesn't end badly

Same fam! At least I know to avoid Simon’s channel on Tuesdays (since they moved in together they’ve been doing Talia Tuesdays), but I’ll go to watch him in like, a football video (on either his channel or someone else’s) and somehow she’ll still get mentioned. It ruins the whole video for me, which really sucks because it takes the enjoyment out of watching him.

I’m terrified for when the Sidemen start uploading videos they filmed around this time, because by then they’ll know the engagement is public and it’ll probably get mentioned more than Behz’s baby 🙄. People are already saying they should do a cheap v expensive bachelor party for Simon and Vik (which I don’t mind much, but that’s literally a whole video centered around Talia so it’ll be painful to watch).

Also because I’m subbed to both Miniminter and MM7, I get recommended fans channels of their relationship. I get why they’d be recommended, but I don’t want them. Simon is the Sidemen member whose clips channel I’m not subbed to, because all the clips either have Talia in the thumbnail, title, or reference her, or a combination of the three. And I get that she’s probably the easiest guest to get, but she’s probably been on What’s Good more than anyone else, and even when she’s not physically there, she’s still either in the title or brought up at least twice an episode 🙄. I know Randy is married and Laura isn’t really in the public eye, but he doesn’t mention her or being married as much as Talia gets mentioned, which makes it even more annoying. Hell, I’m even seeing her on the fucking Willne sub! Apparently they had a thing before her and Simon (but idk I haven’t been able to find anything about that), so now she’s taking over his channel comments and Reddit too.

And I just realized that because they just got engaged, whenever JJ does his next Reddit video, it’s gonna be all about that (KSimon is over, Talia won, etc), because while I’ve been avoiding their reddits as best I can, I keep seeing it on Twitter (as much as I love Chipfat, it’s mainly his fault bc he keeps tweeting about it). Even Twitter keeps recommending fan content about them to me, and it keeps giving me notifications for Talia’s alt, even though I don’t follow that or her main. I know Harry already got his video out of this, and I haven’t watched it yet, because I know the entire Reddit video is just gonna be about their engagement, even though it’s Harry’s Reddit. Like I get that there’s almost 100% crossover between individual fans and Sidemen fans, but each guy should be kept to his own sub and the group sub. Simon Talia shouldn’t be all over Josh’s sub, Faith and Ethan shouldn’t be the only thing on Vik’s sub, etc. It also bothers me because it’s literally only Simon and Talia that this happens with. I don’t see Behz and Faith all over the other subreddits, nor do I get Twitter recommendations from fan accounts for them, or YouTube videos, so it’s not because Simon and Talia are very public, because Behz and Faith are too, if not more so.

Honestly, Talia probably did only get that gig, not because she’s with Simon, but because she’s friends with JJ/her boyfriend is his best friend. JJ definitely helped her get it. I don’t know if her music is any good; I’ve never listened to it. Tbh the most I’ve heard is from that somewhat viral clip of Harry on stream where he tells her song to shut up. And same, I had never really heard of her until the rumors that her and Simon were dating started popping up (Christ I really miss the days when Simon’s big joke was AshleyMariee). The only video I’ve ever watched of hers was her doing Freya’s makeup, and I only watched it because it was Freya’s Internet/YouTube debut, and I only knew about it because Freya tweeted the link. And even then (and this was long before they were public, I think the rumors had just started) I got bad vibes. She just seems very fake, bitchy, and snotty. Her changing her appearance in every photo/video doesn’t really help, but that’s just me being incredibly petty and mean. But also, plenty of celebrities got their start/got famous by knowing someone big, so she probably did get a huge jump in followers once her association with KSI/the Sidemen came out, and that might have helped her get the gig.

It’s just really fucking annoying because I can’t actually have an opinion of her or the relationship online unless it’s super positive/worship. I made one shady comment on a Sidemen video once, bc Talia kept getting mentioned even though it has nothing to do with her, and I got fucking roasted. People can bitch about Freya (though I’ve never really seen it) and Faith whenever they want, but I post one thing saying something along the lines of ‘I wish Simon wasn’t defined by his girlfriend for once’ and the pitchforks come out. Why is Talia the fucking second coming of Christ in this fandom? (This is not rhetorical, I genuinely don’t understand why she’s basically untouchable and worshipped so much compared to other girlfriends).

Her stans are also the fucking scum of the earth. They literally hate Harry for no reason. I remember they tried to cancel him for jokingly calling Talia a bitch more than once. (Another reason why it’s apparently very wrong to not worship her). JJ straight up said he genuinely thought Freya was a bitch for a long time in a video, and no one cared. Harry jokingly calls Talia a silly bitch (though I doubt he actually said that to her directly, since he was telling a story for the camera and most likely playing up what actually happened), and suddenly he’s the devil incarnate. *Also I’m literally only like 8 months older than Faith, so her having a kid (literally due the day she turns 23) is super weird to me, but I’m like that with every famous person younger than me. I feel weird seeing kids younger than me be famous (I’m like this with TommyInnit, the Stranger Things kids, Memeulous, and ImAllexx, and others), idk why. But Ethan deserves to be happy, especially since his last relationship apparently didn’t end well (which, if it’s with who I think it is, really sucks because I liked them together a lot, and it seemed amicable on the surface), and Faith makes him really happy. Damian was smart and cunning, but he is able to portray an innocent persona, they all had the habit of undermining his intellect, so if damian began looking into this, it was for a reason

“Damian? You should be asleep.”

“Something’s wrong! Somethings really wrong!”

“Jon and Lois- Jon- I heard a crash- and- and”

“Habibi.”

“Breathe; tell me what’s wrong.”

“I was on a call with Jon.. I told him about the play since I wanted him to go and stuff. Then I heard a crash. And then the line went dead. I’m scared— what if something happened!”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions, what happened with Lois?”

“She didn’t pick up the phone— she normally does! Or she texts me and says she will call back!”

“Maybe she is asleep.”

“No! You need to believe me!”

“Damian, calm down, I do, we will go to see if they’re okay, you get back to bed.”

“No. I’m coming with.”

• okay fine. He’ll listen, damian went back up to his room for half an hour before calling his friends to do a rescue mission. He had an extra suit in his room, he can do this.

• with his team, it consisted of shazam, abuse, nobody, and green lantern, himself too, of course.

• captain marvel picked him up once he was ready and they met up with the other 3.

Maya: you said he’s in trouble?

Dami: Yes.

Colin: than let’s go save him!

• they went and saved the bestie, nearly got killed too

• tai ended up pulling him aside

T: when are you going to tell him?

D: how am I supposed to when he basically has a girlfriend now?

T: are you just gonna sit there and pine all day??

D: yes, thank you for understanding

• he’s a stubborn little shit and will absolutely not confess, his best friend is happy, who is he to ruin that?

Addressing Batman’s Abuse

Damian: I killed someone

Bruce(and the rest of the batfamily but mostly bruce): It’s ok it’s because of your childhood, you were raised to be an assassin as long as you didn’t murder anyone innocent and do better next time

Dick: I killed someone

Bruce: well i saved them didn’t count bye

Tim: I killed someone

Bruce: Seriously Tim? ok I’m kinda disappointed but i’ll be ok in a little bit(actually idk cause I can’t recall if tim ever killed someone)

Jason: I killed someone

Bruce: HOW DARE YOU BREAK THE NO KILL RULE YOU LITTLE PIECE OF **** WE HAVE MORALS YOU’RE JUST ANOTHER CRIMINAL, A MURDERER, A MONSTER YOU LET THEM WIN IF YOU KILL

Alright enough with the jokes let’s get serious, let’s talk about the abuse. I have a lot to unpack and if you’re like me who doesn’t have the patience to read long things if they don’t matter then i’m sorry . I can read school stuff but fanfiction more than like 30 chapters irritates me which is stupid because I love to read but the human brain is A FUCKING ANNOYING HYPOCRITE. I love the batbros with all my heart and we hate to see bad stuff happen to them. but Bruce...he can get away with hurting the people who he should see as sons and who in turn consider him a father figure. He is essentially taking advantage of their love for his cause. Because the most important thing is batman and the mission which he will hold above his own children, the people in his life who care about him and support him in his insane crusade. Batman is someone who is consumed by this darkness that causes him to sacrifice everything for the mission. It is stated multiple times that his Robins are supposed to be better than him, they’re not needed as assistants in the battlefield but rather emotional support as they bring a little light to Bruce's pain and vengeful darkness. The Robins become better people than Bruce. 

There are obvious examples of Bruce’s abuse such as his second Robin now Red Hood Jason Todd. Now I may be biased as he is my favorite but I love all the robins dearly so FREAKING much. Jason is constantly remembered as Batman’s greatest failure. Why is that? we are led to believe it’s because Bruce didn’t save him but really it’s because Jason didn’t fall in line with Batman’s code which is where we see the flaws in Batman’s philosophy. Why doesn’t Batman just kill the Joker? Jason makes some very valid points saying that all Joker does is cause pain and he keeps breaking out of prison and causing more pain and it’s a vicious cycle, a revolving door that Batman refuses to end. Joker and Batman are almost obsessed with each other. But Batman refuses to kill Joker saying if he does he can’t come back and Joker will win. It’s a war between numbers and moral high ground. But in reality who cares if Joker wins? It’s vague what does it even mean? Joker keeps on killing and if he was gone the world would be safer? It doesn’t matter if he wins as long as people live. Jason Todd is someone who is constantly hurt by the people who are supposed to love him. An example of this is Batman choosing to save Joker rather than his own son in the Under the Red Hood storyline. Jason is clearly heartbroken over the fact that Bruce refuses to kill the person who MURDERED HIM saying “I thought I’d be the last person you ever let him hurt” Jason obviously has lots of trauma PTSD depression and he probably just wants to feel safe pleading with Bruce to just kill Joker that’s it saying “doing it because he took me away from you” which Batman refuses just saying I can’t. 

Now there’s other instances that make my blood boil such as Batman and Robin #20. Damian died in Batman Inc. and obviously since Bruce can’t ever deal with pain in a healthy constructive way, he goes full dark and rage and sadness. He becomes desperate to bring Damian back, being abusive to Tim even when Batman tried to experiment on Frankenstein to bring Damian back and Tim blew the lab up. But Jason...oh god...Bruce wants Jason on a mission in Ethiopia to bring the people who tried to kill Damian justice . (Talia put a bounty on his head) and then Jason agreed, excited at the chance of working with someone he considers a father again. Jason has ceased his killing he has calmed down from when he tried to hurt them all, his mind was damaged by the lazarus pit and he went insane with pain and rage. From my pseudo psychologist perspective I think he thought hurting them would make his pain cease if he tried to hurt the things that caused his pain it would fix him. Anyway Jason is on kinder terms with them but it’s still rough. They’re not all that kind with him sure he’s made mistakes but they all have and he’s really sorry about it. Anyway after taking those bad guys down they talk about family and trust and faith. Then...Bruce does it and reveals the real reason why they came to Ethiopia. Bruce wanted to bring Jason to the place he DIED. WHERE THERE IS A BUTT TON OF TRAUMA. Jason is just so shocked at first he stands there looking numb. He isn't even angry yet. He stands there feeling the pain of that horrible day saying”You lied to me. this wasn't about taking down those mercenaries. You wanted to bring me here..to the worst place in the world...and here I was starting to believe all your crap about trust and faith” He sounds broken which he is he’s been broken by so many people and now Bruce who isn’t supposed to break him just did by taking advantage of him and bringing him to somewhere of horrible trauma. Bruce reveals that he brought Jason here so he could figure out how to bring Damian back to life explaining “Those killers were the mission but this was something else something I couldn’t ignore I thought bringing you here could jog your memory-maybe retrieve a buried buried deep in your subconscious that could help piece together how you came to life so I” and Jason finishes this saying “-could apply it to getting Damian back. Yeah I get it. Did it ever occur to you I might like keeping whatever the hell happened to me buried deep?”Obviously, Jason doesn’t want to relieve his trauma, he doesn’t want to deal with what happened to him a second time. He just wants to move on but Bruce won’t let him. Bruce doesn’t seem to acknowledge Jason’s trauma nor does he seem to care for his well being. “If you cared about me, you wouldn’t want me to dredge up the one thing I've been trying to forget. I don’t want to remember the most horrific day of my life, all right? You may like wallowing in your tragedies but I’m done looking back” which is true all Batman does is sit in the pain of his parents death and he can’t heal like and he spreads pain to others at this rate the dead parents excuse gets a little old. BUT THEN BRUCE HAS THE AUDACITY TO SAY “If you cared about me and what I’ve lost, you’d want to dredge this up! Don’t you see-there’s a chance you can help me erase one of the worst days of my life. You can give me the greatest gift of all and help me figure out how to bring my son back!” Here he uses a lot of pronouns referring to himself, CARED ABOUT ME, I’VE LOST, HELP ME, MY LIFE, GIVE ME, HELP ME, MY SON. Yes Bruce, make it all about you, cause we definitely want you too. You’re a grown ass man and Jason is the more mature person here, honestly all the Robins learn to process grief and heal and grow and they’re just generally better people. Bruce is basically saying I care more about Damian than I care about you and my needs are greater than yours so screw your feelings, your feelings don’t matter. He really only seems to care about himself and he wants to erase his own pain. He doesn’t even seem to consider what Damian would want and what being brought back to life would do to him. Jason knows what it’s like, the pain of it, he’s probably the only person who would understand why someone wouldn’t want to come back. After All of this Bruce doesn’t even apologize and makes some half assed promise for unconditional truth but Jason still accepts this and helps Bruce get Damian’s body back from Darkseid even though he didn’t have to. 

Also there’s battle of the cowl which I desperately try to ignore but what I can tell Bruce *cough* died *cough* at this rate whenever Bruce dies or some crap I’m like ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT??? But sorry back to the topic. Bruce had a message for Jason for everyone else was just like I hope you’re doing well I love y’all live your life for JASON HOWEVER. He was all like you’re a failure not because I didn’t save you but because I don’t like how you turned out. Also you have problems, you’re mentally ill(I know but don’t have to be so awful about it)and there’s a secret I shouldn’t have kept and bye. And he suggests help but WHY DIDN’T HE GET JASON HELP WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER HMMMMM? It’s so obvious Jason’s childhood is full of abuse of course he has bad mental health and all that jazz. Also he puts Jason in Arkham where the Joker is 5 DOORS DOWN. I don’t think I have to say anything but they could literally put him in ANY OTHER PRISON. Why this one idk?

Bruce beat Jason and was probably about to kill Jason in RHATO #25. All beacuse Jason shot penguin and since Red Hood is a criminal blah blah blah Bruce has to do something. Actually he doesn’t as he just assumes Jason killed him which he didn’t also he didn’t seem to consider mind control or clones or whatever and he thought it was a good idea to beat the crap out of his sons. Jason even points this out”You are a character, I’ve never seen you beat Joker that hard and you hate him”...Bruce is beating him harder than the Joker. BRUCE IS BEATING HIS GODDAMN SON, SO HE HATES HIS SON MORE THAN JOKER??? Here we see how Bruce constantly chooses Joker over Jason.

Let's also talk about Dick his first son (I love my circus boi). After Jason died *sob*(i’m gonna cry) Dick is pretty darn sad and Bruce didn’t tell him shit so he’s obv like hey what’s the deal and BRUCE HAS THE AUDACITY TO BE MAD AT DICK. and he tries to kick Dick out of his life and be like leave your key get outta my face and he punched Dick LIKE BOI YOU DIDN’T TELL HIM ABOUT THE FUNERAL OR THE FACE THAT JASON DIED. We already knew it was bad because Bruce and Dick argued like my parents argue which is pretty bad. Lo and behold Bruce doesn’t apologize.

Also Nightwing #30 after Dick was outed as Nightwing and fake died on telelvision. Bruce used like WAAAAAAY excessive force. They were sparring but it got real violent real fast. And Nightwing wasn’t in the right mindset he was traumatized and Bruce totally took advantage of him by asking him to work for Spyral which Dick obv didn’t want to do but Bruce fucking FORCED that crap onto him after something as awful as that and he probably knew Dick would give in eventually that bastard. No, Bruce doesn’t apologize either.

Most recently Batman #71...now see this is Tim’s turn and I love my big brain boi Tim... and when you love a fictional character you know something bad is gonna happen. Bruce’s abuse, it’s kinda worse cause he’s a fucking KID. now Bruce be like let’s meet and shit so most of them are there and some evil villain is doing their thang and Tim is tryin be nice comforting Bruce, telling him that Tim will always be there and that Tim will help AND BRUCE FUCKING PUNCHED HIM. HE WAS JUST TRYIN BE NICE AND HELP YOU FEEL BETTER YOU POS. Now do we see Bruce apologize? NOOOOO. What did you expect? Honestly it’s not that hard it’s a simple sentences even a dumbass like you can manage it

Now I’m not totally familiar with any abuse on Damian but it’s there. Bruce is allergic to emotions, and it’s hard for him to be emotionally supportive and show any affection whatsoever. Showing any semblance of pride to Damian is like me trying to do pushups it’s FUCKING impossible for Bruce to show any compassion toward his son whatsoever (seriously though push ups are a pain in the ass I’m not athletic whatsoever why do you think I waste my time venting on tumblr the only thing I’m good for is being the smart kid in school and even then some people outshine me in that.)...sad but I’m not here to complain about that. Anyway Dick is a BAMF and openly shows Damian hey i’m proud of you and I love you. IT’S NOT THAT HARD BRUCE.

Bruce can’t ever be happy, he doesn’t let himself be happy because he can’t move on from that tragedy that happened to him. And he doesn’t allow anyone around him to be happy either. Shown as when Dick is like hey I can be in love with someone and we can be long term we can be happy together. BRUCE BE LIKE NUH HUH VIGILANTES CAN’T BE HAPPY WE HAVE TO SACRIFICE FOR THE MISSION. Let your son be FUCKING HAPPY. I know I sound like I hate him and maybe I do a bit but I don’t think he’s like completely Joker evil and irredeemable. I just can’t deal with how DC handles abusers like Bruce and having characters enable this behavior. We need to know that Bruce’s behavior is not ok and his children are completely numb to it, it’s normal to them and it’s disgusting. Bruce needs repercussions and he needs to know that he can’t do that to kids who love and trust him.

And despite the injury, Brown ordered Damian to look for evidence in the base, as if she could order him to do anything. He already knows what he'll see –

When he returns in failure, he will almost certainly be killed – but he will return. It's what they all do. They can't leave, even if the alternative is death, because leaving is also death – but meaningless death. Shadow assassins die for Ra's Al Ghul, not for themselves.

Okay so oof. Very long chapter (also now we have surpassed 200k words!) I rewrote parts of this chapter literally 3 times and edited parts of it (not batfam/main character stuff, just how I was handling the League of Shadows assassins, so if you read it before seeing it on tumblr no need to re-read) after posting because i kept being conflicted on stuff. But it’s on its final form now

decisions under cut, as usual (tw mentions of suicide, fictional. just in the under cut though not in the chapter)

anyway explanation

Initially, the League of Shadows assassins were really... suicide happy? IDK how to describe it. The internal logic was that they have been shown to do so gladly in the text  before (Bane of demon they jump off building to save uh... helicopter space? and in BTAS they erase their minds to avoid being captured by Batman. I also know they do have some type of cyanide pill in Son of the Demon plotline they try to use when Qayin is interrogating one).

But anyway having them all do that with no question felt kind of dehumanizing and definitely unnecessarily angsty and just trying to get them out of the way, and while they are obviously very dehumanized by Ra’s Al Ghul, they should still be not dehumanized in the text. So I made it so they were a bit more neutral, viewing themselves as being capable of resisting revealing info to the Gotham police and viewing themselves as professionals in a bad situation.

A pretty big theme among lots of the League members, even Damian, is dehumanization though, as seen by Teen Titans Rebirth (first 6 issues) and The Shadow/ Batman.

I tried to make it clear in the text that Tim wasn’t just trying to be mean to Damian because he’s mean – he didn’t even know that Dick and Alfred lied to Damian. But also that “you’re just jealous about Bruce picking someone instead of you” is definitely canon IIRC it was in Gates of Gotham (him hypothesizing why Damian doesn’t like Cass).

I also hope the buildup to the little doubts Damian had were clear enough that it doesn’t look weird he believed Tim

you can tell here I decided to go with the Alfred doesn’t apologize thing I was asking about earlier, because while Alfred expresses regret I don’t recall him ever apologizing for doing something to another person in canon (just like. being an inconvenience normally or like sorry if he didn’t know someone was a bad guy, not ‘I treated you wrong’). So pretty much like my mom LMAO. We’ll see how it affects his relationship with Damian.

Also max i stole your league of shadows assassins play snake on their phones headcanon :P or at least Damian programmed snake

WRT Damian’s dream scene: They always seemed super trippy in the comics, so I keep that here too (and Talia tells him no one has good dreams because when we saw her dream in Batman Chronicles #8 it was very similar in theme to Damian’s - a lot of demon imagery and angst)
