Questions number 3, 7, & 10 !
(Weird Questions for Writers)
I suck at being concise but I triiiiiied~
3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?
So I like to play "games" when I write because I like to have order or rules to help keep me focused. I have a few different games and I typically start a new game each month. For example, for this month, I have made a list of eight different fics that I want to work on, and I assigned a number (1-8) to each fic. Each night, I randomize three of the numbers to determine which fics I will work on. I have to write at least one paragraph for each fic, but it can be as short as just a few words, there's no upper or lower limit.
This is cursed because I have OCD and I feel like I can't work on a fic unless it's been randomized even if I feel inspired or have an idea I don't want to forget. I have to remind myself that these are rules I literally just made up, they don't mean anything, I can break them if I want and no one will ever know or care.
But on the plus side, I am able to keep numerous fics going at a steady pace.
7. What is your deepest joy about writing?
I find a lot of pleasure in finding ways to link all the details and intricacies in my fics, like little snippets of dialogue that maybe didn't seem that important before or a particular decision a character made in an earlier chapter that opens up a door for an amazing plot point later. Weaving everything together into a fantastically coherent plot is such an amazing feeling, and it's even better when I can share it with others and they are able to actually see all the neat little details that I was able to make work together.
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you?
Yes, actually, Disparaged haunted me for a long time. It was my first angsty fic that I shared publicly, and I felt really vulnerable. I felt that Disparaged was odd, bizarre, weird. It details a teenager’s response to trauma but then it also details a woman’s desire to violate a teenage boy. It shows a boy’s struggle with addiction to painkillers and a mother’s addiction to both her son and an elusive fantasy of a man she can’t have. It is horrifying and inappropriate and has all these sexual undertones.
And I guess I felt like...it showed everything that I was and everything that was wrong with me?
And I just wondered why I couldn’t have written a normal angsty fic with all the normal tropes the fandom likes. Something universally likable, something I wouldn't keep getting comments about how uncomfortable and upsetting it was. Something that didn’t cause someone to leave a comment saying they were unable to finish the fic because it was too distressing and intense. Something that didn’t make someone ask me seriously if I’m doing okay.
But over time as I started posting more angst and especially with the popularity of the sequel Dissembled, I started to feel better about it. And now I embrace my love for dark angst.
But yes, for quite a while, I was haunted by Disparaged.

What's the story behind Briar's tattoos?
She got them in her druid circle! I have a vague idea that they follow "energy lines" in the body and I triiiiiied to make them evocative of mycelium (like, in the most abstract possible way)
(also the ooc answer is that I was messing around on hero forge and found some options that inspired me. I wanted something that looked occult without looking "tribal" or being too complicated to draw)

Like I’ve triiiiiied to be nice to him, even letting him feed off me and everything, but any time I do anything even slightly altruistic he hates it.
And what do you mean “Astarion disapproves” of me calling slavers scum????

Frisk Month, Day 18 (Undyne) and 19 (Alphys)!
One of my favorite headcanons is Frisk joining Undyne every morning for her daily running. It gets really intense most of the times! And then Alphys tries to share her entire manga collection- keyword, tries

You asked for it you butt write Hanekawa
Tumblr media
She couldn’t help but smirk as she side-eyed him. Admiring wasn’t the word she’d use but she certainly felt something withnessing Araragi’s blatant thick headed and oblivious behavior. She knew he was trying... Really she did. She gave a small giggle as she took a more carefree stance with her posture. “Is that your answer? Hmm...” Hanekawa reached down and took hold of her school bag once more. “You’ll do fine. Who knows? Perhaps one day you wont need me...” Her smile dropped just a small amount as her voice seemed to force itself to crack into a whisper. “Maybe it will be me who needs you. But... Like I said. Who knows? Even I don’t know...” She took a few steps forward before giving a weak attempt at making her smile return.
“I only know what I know.”

This isn't from the list of questions, but have you seen any of Oz Perkins's movies? I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in The House, The Blackcoat's Daughter? Do you consider those examples of elevated horror, or do you think his movies are original and atmospheric enough Perkins gets away with it? I go for the latter, but maybe that's because I'm softer on elevated horror, though I am SUPER getting sick of everything being about grief lol.
I've seen I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, but not any of his other work (I have been meaning to see both The Blackcoat's Daughter and Gretel and Hansel though!)
And yeah, I wouldn't consider them elevated horror. I think I'd actually argue that they're more gothic cinema than horror even, and would be more likely to group I Am the Pretty Thing with Crimson Peak, The Others and Saint Maud than I would with the 'elevated horror' movies like Hereditary, The Lighthouse and Us.
I think there's a real distinction between gothic cinema and horror cinema that often gets blurred, and a big part of that is in atmosphere, tone and focus. I mean, gosh, gothic stories don't even have to involve horror at all – think of Jane Eyre, The Phantom of the Opera and My Cousin Rachel.
I'd probably argue that the distinction lies in the relationship between horror, theme and character. Is the horror more metaphorical? Does it exist in service of narrative themes and characters? Or do the characters ultimately exist in service of the horror? Are they the vehicles the horrific uses to get to the audience?
There's a lot of crossover of course, especially in films like The Babadook and Get Out, but I do think that, combined with the atmosphere, is what really separates gothic from horror, and as a result, elevated horror too.
