when u and modern!mizu first got together, u guys figured u would take it slow

it was mizu’s first relationship out of a toxic one

and u didn’t mind the slow pace

going on dates, hanging out, relaxing together

it was a blast

until one day u guys were out downtown, having a lil cafe date

and one of eiji’s clients recognized mizu as u hopped on the back of her motorcycle, zooming off to get lunch

modern!mizu ends up getting an unexpected phone call from her adopted dad

they keep in touch every few days

but she had just called him yesterday

Mizu was lying on her bed, scrolling through her phone. Her homework lies on her desk, ready to be done.

She groans in frustration and gently throws the phone down.

Ok, enough scrolling. Let’s get shit done-

Her phone starts to vibrate. Mizu flips the phone to spot the contact name “Swordfather”. The contact name is paired with a 0.5 selfie of him winning against Mizu. It continued to vibrate on Mizu's bed.

That’s odd. I just called him yesterday.

“Hey dad, whats up?”, Mizu answer.

“Who’s in the back of your bike?”, he yells into the phone.

“How- who- what are you talking-“

“Mr. Shindo come to me earlier today.” He starts, stern and loud, “He say he saw you with girl behind you on bike.”

Mr. Shindo was a regular at Eiji’s Repair Shop ever since Mizu was young. A man with temper and sass, he only trusted Eiji with his services. But with sass came a lot of gossip. Mizu wouldn’t believe the amount of drama happening the neighborhood if it wasn’t for Mr.Shindo’s loud mouth.

“Ok dad, I know it’s a girl but-“

“And he say he saw you hold hands! And drive off?!”, Eiji yelled with concern.

Mizu never really heard him this loud. There was the occasional disagreement and arguments about the Sunday game or who’s cooking for dinner. It was just banter at the most.

When Mizu told him about Mikio and why she left him & all his problems, he stayed calm and silent. Not many words were said when she admitted everything he did during the relationship. But it was comforting to know that her adopted dad was there, quietly listening to her sobs at the dining table.

“I know it’s not a guy but-“

“Guy, girl I do no care. Who is she?”

Mizu was stunned. Yeah, her dad’s English wasn’t the best but his words hit deep. The only time he pulled out the “I don’t care” in her lifetime was a foul customer.

A man by the name of Chiaki was on his knees close to closing hours, begging on his knees for Eiji to fix his motorcycle in hopes to make it faster. After constant days of his begging and pleading during open & closing, Eiji took it into his shop. After countless days of watching her dad attempt to fix the customer’s bike, Chiaki started criticizing and called him an “decrepit old man unable to fix shit”. Mizu wanted to rock his shit but her dad stopped her before she could.

“I may be old, but I do no care. Leave with your piece of shit you call a bike.”, Eiji said as Chiaki sped off, flipping the bird as he sent off.

"Mizu? You there?, Eiji asks. Mizu snaps back to reality.

"Yeah?"

"You tired of guys now, ha?"

Mizu scoffed, laughing at the unexpected response. She hears a hearty chuckle through the phone.

"Yeah yeah.", Mizu sighs in relief, "She's my girlfriend. Her name is Y/N.", Mizu answered, a blush blooming on her face.

"Ah good. Next time you come home, bring her. I'll make my barbeque special.", Eiji says lightheartedly.

Mizu's eyes lit up. It had been a while since she visited home. And to be greeted with the smell of her dad's honey BBQ baby back ribs and juicy prime rib? Yeah, she was sold.

"I will. I'll let you know when I'll visit."

"And Mizu?"

"Yes, Dad?"

"She take good care of you?", he asks in a concerned tone.

MIzu smiles, knowing the slow burn of confusion, hatred, and rage he witnessed over the many years. He was present during her silent middle school self, her angsty & stubborn teenage years, and her confused & rage-filled self during her previous relationship.

She looks at the wall where a photobooth strip of you two hung. It was during one of your exploring the city dates when you two found a vintage photo booth. A little dusty but it did the job of capturing you two together.

"Yes. Yes, she does, dad."

later that week, u get a text msg from mizu asking if u are free for the weekend

thinking it was another weekend date, u clear out ur schedule

and then she texts u its ab coming home w her for the weekend and see her dad

this was kinda out of nowhere

it has been a few months now...

that friday u get on her motorcycle and ride to her hometown

its only an hr out but seeing the change from a college town to a smaller town felt like another world

You feel the motorcycle slow down as you head towards the exit. The wind calms down as you pass by the welcome sign to Kohama. As you go down the exit, you look out. Down below is a winding path to the seaside town. The town hangs next to a cliff. From your point of view, you could spot the deep blue ocean shimmers as Mizu takes you down the road.

She goes at a slower pace, taking in the familiar sights she left behind: the tall pine trees, a long coastline as far as the eye can see, and boulders scattering the beaches every once in a while. She rolls up to a stop sign and lifts her visor up.

"Smells like home."

You mimic her motions, lifting yours as well. The faint scent of sea salt mixed with the cool breeze from the ocean.

With both of you refreshed, Mizu continued along the path towards the middle of town.

and he does see u but the only thing he knows ab u is that ur dating his daughter

“Dad?”, Mizu calls through the house. You follow her footsteps down the hallway. She then opens the backdoor at the end, the midday shining into the hallway.

The sun blinds you for a second. You see a growing backyard with bushes aligning the fence. Tucked in the corner lied a storage shed surrounded by bikes and a few spare tires. Next to the shed is a grill in use, smoke coming out of the vent.

“I’m here Mizu.” An elderly voice called, his back facing you.

He turns around, a faint pout on his face. His eyes squinting from the harsh midday sun.

“You bring girlfriend?”

Mizu grins at her dad’s comment. She looks back at you and softly grabs your hand, pulling you next to her.

“This is Y/N.”

You smiled, waving at Mizu’s father. You know he’s not a bad guy, just a badass through Mizu’s stories of back home. However, you’re still anxious underneath your pleasing demeanor.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.”

You look up to meet his gaze. Old, tired eyes stare back. Stern but not mean or cruel. Amiable. You could only wonder how much wisdom he has behind those eyes.

“Nice to meet you. I am Eiji.”

He waves back, awkwardly smiling as he tends to the grill. The interaction had a striking similarity to when you first met Mizu: cordial, dry, and a little awkward.

Like father, like daughter, you suppose.

hes a proud man and feels safe knowing mizu is ok

when mizu pops into the bathroom, he checks in on the cooking

You put on the red and blue mitts and carefully place the mac and cheese into the oven. You feel the fiery heat of the oven against your forearms.

“How is cooking going?”

You close the oven and look behind to find Eiji. You nod in response.

“It’s going good! We’re almost done.”, you say as you move to the side. He gets a view of your work with Mizu: a plate of stir fried garlic string beans with crispy fried onions, a stack of baked potatoes along with bowls of toppings portioned by Mizu, Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuits, and the max and cheese that’s currently baking.

“Thank you for inviting me over and letting me stay.”, you say politely as you put the mittens away.

He nods back, a small smile forming around his lips.

The conversation falls short. A silence fills the air.

For a little too long.

It’s almost uncomfortable to breath, let alone talk, in the kitchen.

“Ribs are almost done. Please help set tables with me.”

You follow his request and help him with the plates and utensils.

“You know,”, You look up from the dinner table, giving Eiji your attention. “I did not know Mizu would bring girlfriend back.”

He chuckled as he looked back at you. You hear the emphasis on “girl” and laughed along. After hearing about Mizu’s previous relationship during the beginning of your relationship, you started to understand her ways.

And now, you understood why Eiji was awkward earlier in the day. When Mizu first met you, it was anxiousness meeting you. For Eiji, it was out of concern from Mizu’s past.

“Yeah, I’m probably not what you expected.”, you tease.

A hearty laugh comes out of Eiji. You feel the heaviness in the room lifts.

“But I’ll be here for her. I plan to, don’t worry.”, you reassure him. As serious as you sound, it was all true.

He hums in agreement. He puts down the final fork and walks over to the stir-fried green beans. His fingers reach for a string bean and tastes your cooking.

“Mm. You are honest.”, he pauses as he takes another bite. “You also make mean green beans.”

You snort, the compliment catching you off guard.

“Mean green beans?”, you question. You take a bean from the plate.

He nods.

Transitioning into a bit of a spicier mood after all the fluff lately, you guys are welcome 😌😌

Ichiban Kasuga

Ichiban really respects people as hardworking as you are! Thing is, you are not just hardworking—most times, you come home looking exhausted, and even though he always asks if you are feeling okay and you say yes, he knows that you’re not, deep down. He always says you can tell him whatever is bothering you, but considering how much of a busy-bee you are, you probably won’t do it anyway. So, he starts devising a little plan to help you relax.

An absolute ray of sunshine. He welcomes you home with his biggest smile and a bear hug, then tells you to sit down on the couch. You try to tell him you have some more work to finish, but he won’t listen: you are sitting down, he is bringing you some sweets and hot tea he’s just prepared. Only one thing: working tonight is strictly forbidden, doctor’s (Ichi’s) orders!

Once you are done with the tea and pastries (though yeah, Ichi did steal one or two; don’t blame him, they just looked too good!), he’s going to convince you, one way or another, to tell him about everything that’s been on your mind lately. Ichi has mastered the art of puppy dog eyes, and refusing those is hard. You can try, sure, but you both know you are eventually going to fold. Let it be known that Ichiban Kasuga usually doesn’t use the puppy look to get his way, but in this case... he’ll make an exception.

It doesn’t matter how long your story is, he will listen. Listen attentively. He can’t do anything to change that one deadline that’s been stressing you out, or that one co-worker’s behavior that’s been pissing you off more than usual lately, but he is one hell of a good listener and always willing to lend you an ear.

What he can do though, is help take the stress away. Tea and sweets and talking sure help, but you need to unwind some other ways sometimes too, don’t you? Don’t worry, Ichi gets that. Again, an absolute ray of sunshine, always willing to help—and if sex is the way then... Well, he’ll do it no questions asked.

Oh, you’re getting one hell of a feast for dinner the day after you tell him in thorough detail what has been running through your mind lately. All of your favorite dishes? He makes them. Your favorite inciense smell? He bought it to burn just for the occasion. You want him to feed you strawberries with whipped cream afterwards? He’ll chuckle, then comply.

You need a good fuck to de-stress? He is your man. What, you thought he only dropped the ‘work’s fucking you over harder than me’ line to get a smile out of you? Of course not! What kind of man would he be if he didn’t deliver? So yeah, ask for sex whenever you need to let out some stress. You can try to take control all you want, but Zhao is gonna call the shots on this one. The best way to relax is to exhaust yourself, turn your brain to mush until you can’t overthink anymore. He won’t shove your head in the pillow though, unless you explicitly ask for it. He’s been there himself, actually. Even when he was with Marie, when she left her job he started working extra hard, extra long shifts to get enough money to support them both plus their child who was on the way. He won’t give you any cliché bullshit of ‘don’t worry, it’s okay, everything will be alright’. It’s a very ‘Tomizawa’ pep talk. Yeah, burnout fucking sucks, doesn’t it? He has experienced it too, though he’s pretty sure your situations are very different in nature. We all have our own circumstances and different ways to help us unwind. So, whatever it is that helps you, tell him. So long as it’s something he can feasibly do, he will do everything in his power to help.

If sex is the way you want to unwind? Then oh boy, is he not complaining at all! He gets to help you out and he gets sex to boot? Listen, it’s not that he is happy you’re stressed and need his help, but he has this goofy grin on his face when you ask him to wait for you in the bedroom.

He is already a switch leaning to the subby side, but something about the way you just use him to get off and let out stress? Now that turns him on. She knows the face of stress. She knows because she is there on the regular, Queen of the Geomijul and all. And because she knows, she has a few tricks up her sleeve that help her relax when she feels like she might burst at the seams. Stress-cooking is her go-to though.

Will make you try out stress-cooking at least once to see if it works for you, too. As it turns out, it doesn’t work like she had expected. You just make stupid mistakes you normally wouldn’t make because your head is somewhere else (probably worrying), and the more mistakes you make, the more irritated you get and the worse the gyoza come out. Seonhee quickly learns that she shouldn’t allow you in the kitchen when you are like this. At least not unsupervised.

She has many mechanisms to cope with stress though, not just cooking, so she will jump to another one just as quick. And when cooking doesn’t work for her, what she does is take a walk down at Hamakita Park for fresh air, drop by Eomeoni’s Vow for some comfort food, then come back home for a warm bath, maybe do her nails if they look chipped. That’s what she will try on you next, and what would you know? It worked.

Korean food may not bring back memories for you like it does for her, but it is so freaking tasty. Seems like all you needed to turn your brain off for a while was a spicy dish of kimchi and rice or dakgalbi—but don’t pass out on her just now! You still have a nailcare session to get to when you arrive home, and Seonhee just bought brand new nail polish colors for you.

Honestly, she is probably the one who suggests sex to try and unwind. Seonhee is not one to mince words, she will just get straight to the point: well, you are stressed. Sex is supposed to help with that. So... wanna go to the bedroom?

One thing about Yamai that only you know? He’s a cuddler. With how cold he is and how warm you are? It’s a no-brainer. He is a bit stiff the first few times, but he’s gotten a lot better. So you bet he is there for support when you need him, especially when you are feeling burnt out. Words may not be his forte, but he shows he cares through actions.

Let’s be honest again: his first suggestion was probably ‘so let’s fuck the stress away.’ He says it so matter-of-factly you would think he is being sarcastic, but he is not. i'll preface this by saying that i know absolutely nothing about this man ; however, from what i've read about him, he seems genuinely fun and easy to be around, so i can summarize dates with him as : carefree

so i'm thinking arcade dates, afternoon walks, amusement parks !! and if you're available, an evening out at the pier or the fair, or food trips at the local food hub !! neon signs and laughing under the stars, all that jazz !

i don't think he'd generally plan dates, if that makes sense ? like, if he sees a place he'd like to go to or an activity he'd want to do with you, he'd let you know on a whim !! this doesn't mean that he doesn't put effort into dates (please i can see him paying for everything that you want ..), but i just personally think that he prefers dates wherein both of you can laugh freely and be yourselves .

I have a new Ash Lives headcanon:

After Lao gets him, he is discovered and gets medical care. Of course, he's immediately in police custody and though he tries to exchange testimony for witness protection, there are some pretty powerful men who want him to rot in prison for the rest of his life.

He's exhausted what appears to be his last avenue to freedom and his trial date is set, when he's ushered out of jail in the middle of the night. He's taken to an unknown location to meet with a very bland man in an equally bland suit. The guy is obviously CIA.

It turns out that the CIA is looking to recruit him, as he meets all the intelligence thresholds, already has a background dealing with high-level crime, and possesses a very particular set of skills necessary to the job.

Ash is interested, but he refuses to be an assassin. "No killing unless it's absolutely necessary," he counters.

The CIA accepts and all records of Ash Lynx's existence are removed from the record. (Side note: he becomes part of the Mandela-Effect phenomenon because people claim to remember when a gang leader named Ash Lynx was mowing down other gangs in New York, but no one can find evidence of this.)

He's announced dead in prison, and he's not allowed to contact anyone from his past. Still, he haunts Eiji's life, until one night Eiji is threatened (a mugging, a break in, whatever) and Ash steps in, unable to allow anyone to harm Eiji.

Ash tells him everything, and they agree to vanish together. Ash gets a long-term, deep cover assignment and Eiji becomes a missing person and no one (even the CIA) hears from them again.

Like many things in life, basketball is a money sport. While inherent talent and skill is incredibly important, without the resources and opportunities to succeed, you can only get so far.

Throughout Slam Dunk, the importance of money and how it has a massive role in the world of basketball is not explicitly stated, but through the depictions of different teams in the series, it is prevalent.

We are first introduced to Shohoku High, a public school in Kanagawa. Shohoku is not a “poor” or “ghetto” school, but it is by no means a prestigious school either. Shohoku is initially depicted to be an ordinary school, but we are also shown how it has delinquency and school fights — especially among its protagonist and his “gang”

Shohoku’s normalcy is extended into its clubs, in particular, its basketball club. This club isn’t necessarily “run down” or “at risk of not existing anymore”, but aside from its coach (Coach Anzai, a man who used to coach the Japanese national team) and Akagi, their star center, Shohoku’s basketball team doesn’t have much going for it. Due to being a public school, Shohoku doesn’t have the money incentive to recruit star players (like some other schools I will mention soon), and most stars (besides Rukawa LOLLL) won’t go to an ordinary school “on a whim”

Moreover, the financial disparities become even more personal through the experiences of the characters themselves.

Sakuragi is hinted at to be poor, and the notion that basketball is “pay to play” is first explored through him in volume three, where Hikoichi (a player from Ryonan who “scouts” their competition) points out that it is strange Sakuragi doesn’t have basketball shoes, but he is quick to tell himself that it is likely because Sakuragi can’t afford them. Many basketball shoes, especially the Jordans that Sakuragi obtains throughout the series, are well over the $150-200 USD price range. While it is possible to play without basketball shoes, not having shoes that are designed for basketball automatically puts a player at a slight disadvantage.

This brings into question how resources—or the lack thereof—can subtly but significantly influence the trajectory of a player’s journey and a team’s potential for success. Sakuragi was lucky to have gotten practically free basketball shoes due to the generosity of a store owner, but those costs were his own out-of-pocket expenses. Unfortunately, a public school without special stipends for their programs cannot provide financial assistance to provide some of the resources to nurture potentially talented players.

While schools like Shohoku do not have funds to incentivize players or potential talent to come their way, they also do not have the funds to incentivize star coaches to coach at these schools. While Shohoku was able to have gotten Anzai (who wanted to retire by coaching highschool basketball), many public schools do not have that same luck.

In fact, the reason that two of the starting players, Mitsui and Miyagi, even decided to attend Shohoku was due to its coach, Coach Anzai. I think this goes to show that if a school invests in incentives like star coaches or a star basketball program, then these talented players will want to attend.

In terms of schools who provide ALL the incentives, and has thus led to star teams, I want to focus on Kainan, Shoyo, and (especially) Ryonan.

All are labelled as prestigious, private schools with amazing basketball programs, with Kainan having a stellar track record at nationals. But why is that? How did they get so.. good?

If I had to best answer this, money.

Ryonan is known to have scouted its star players, with Coach Taoka even scouting Sendoh and Fukuda from a junior high in Tokyo. For reference, Kanagawa is about two hours away from Tokyo, so Coach Taoka has to provide incentives for these boys to move to a different prefecture rather than staying in a city that likely has many powerhouse schools. In his case, these incentives would likely be full rides to Ryonan, as well as extra stipends to cover these student’s additional costs (such as food, money to move away, etc). Since Ryonan has the funding to do this, Coach Taoka is able to travel around to different areas, find these hidden talents, and bring them over to Ryonan. Public schools like Shohoku, who do not have allocated funds for sports programs, do not have this opportunity… and thus, are at an automatic disadvantage.

It is not explicitly stated how prestigious of a school Shoyo is, but having a program-related disadvantage affecting their players is prevalent. They do not have an official coach (for an unmentioned reason), and their star player Fujima has to coach his teammates as a result. Unfortunately, this additional responsibility prevented him from focusing on his own skills. I do believe Shoyo IS a school that has funding, but this highlights how a program being neglected directly impacts the strength of a team.

Another team I wanted to point out is Toyotama, a team that faced some of the most immense pressure in the entire series.

While Minami and Kishimoto, the team’s leaders, are characterized as “brute assholes”, it is shown that their irrational behavior stems from their pressure to perform well in order to potentially bring back their former coach, Coach Kitano.

Although Toyotama is 8th in the country, for the investors in their school’s basketball program, this isn’t enough. And thus… Coach Kitano was fired in the hopes of getting a coach who could lead the team to a better performance.

For these prestigious schools, their end goal is making a return on their investments. After all, what is the point of pouring all that money and resources for a team that doesn't even land them in the news?

While this is sad, it is very realistic. And as a result... even though Toyotama has a prestigious program, they felt even more pressure to *make a return." and this pressure poured into the team and their behavior.

However, the school that truly encapsulates the opportunities that money and resources provide for their players is Sannoh Technical High School.

Sannoh is practically a world class basketball team, with "anyone in Japan who gives a damn about basketball knows them", a team that had won nationals for years on end.

But how can one team be so good, let alone having a lasting legacy of greatness?

While their players are undoubtedly talented, Sannoh has invested aplenty into nurturing their players' talents.

Like Coach Taoka of Ryonan, Sannoh’s Coach Damoto scouts the best and brightest for their team. Eji Sawakita, although residing in a different prefecture, was discovered and scouted by Sannoh. While it isn't explicitly said how many players they scouted, or what incentives they provided Sawakita (aside from opportunities and their prestige), it can be inferred that Sannoh likely looks for the best and brighest to be apart of their teams.

In addition to the money and resources spent scouting, Sannoh provides their team with immense opportunities that most schools do not.

It is stated that Sawakita had been sent on a trip abroad to play basketball in America, and that he even learned new techniques during his trip. To say the least, a trip like that is... expensive. To send students to a country across the world just to play basketball is a hefty price to pay, and yet Sannoh was willing to pay it.

To prepare for Shohoku's match, Coach Damoto arranged a practice match with Sannoh alum who have a similar playstyle to Shohoku. While it is possible that these alum were willing to volunteer their time doing this, Damoto going out of his way to bring them all together and schedule that practice match is something that likely cost a significant amount to make happen. And it is certainly an opportunity that many schools would not provide.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to compete with money, and this sentiment is universal for any sector.

But what makes Shohoku’s victory over all these powerhouse schools, especially Sannoh, so shocking is the fact it is an “ordinary, no name school.” Theoretically, Shohoku would never beat a team like Sannoh, especially given the fact that Shohoku didn’t even have half the money, resources, and opportunities that Sannoh does.

Yet… Shohoku did it. And I think this part of why Slam Dunk is such a beautiful story: an ordinary team was, even for a moment, able to be extraordinary.

He wakes up one day and he knows it’s gonna suck because he can’t find his lucky purple shirt. Yes, it’s his lucky shirt, why else do you think he has a matching bathing suit? Anyway, fact of the matter is, he can’t find it, and you are not home so he can’t ask you if you’ve seen it. So, he has to go to work wearing something else.

Sure enough, work fucking sucks, as expected. People are assholes sometimes while talking to the cabbie, what else is new? Anyway, maybe things will get better when he gets home. It smells like loco moco from the door, so that, at least, is good.

“Welcome home, honey! Sorry, I grabbed your shirt to go shopping today. You don’t mind, do you?”

Actually? Scratch everything about work sucking—okay, fine, it still sucked, but you look so cute wearing his lucky purple shirt that he might just let you wear it more often. Not entirely give it to you, but if you ask to borrow it one day to go out, he’ll lend it to you just fine.

Yutaka Yamai

Yamai is perpetually cold. Even in Hawaii, being covered from head to toe, he has to keep the jacket over his shoulders just in case it gets worse. Except he’s been looking for it all morning and he can’t find it, and now he’s shivering and it makes him angry. Maybe he roughs his boys up a little more than usual.

He drops by your place when he has a bad day, to unwind—whether that is by fucking your brains out or just spending time together having a few drinks. Thank God you gave him a key for these situations, because he knocked and you didn’t answer, and you know he would’ve busted the door down no problem. He understands just where his jacket went when he walks into your room.

“Hiii... Sorry, was feeling a bit under the weather and wanted to be warm, and you left it here the other day, so... Were you cold today?”

He’s still cold as shit, don’t get him wrong, but he would let you wear it for as long as you need. It makes him feel oddly warm, seeing you all wrapped up in his jacket, a bit pale on the face (you must be getting sick; all the shivering kinda reminds him of himself. Funny how that works, huh?). Until you get better, he decides, he’ll just wear another jacket and let you keep this one.

Eiji Mitamura

After he’s served his time and he’s back home, he kinda can’t look at himself in the eye. The clothes he used to wear have that air around them, too. It’s pretty much the only thing he has to wear, so he still uses it, but it kind of... disgusts him. He considers getting rid of it all and he tells you about as much.

His black and blue Hawaiian shirt is the one he hates the most. The same shirt he sees you wearing one morning, when he gets out of bed and sees you in the kitchen making breakfast. If asked whether he likes or dislikes seeing you in it... he can’t tell, really. He likes how it fits you, but at the same time, it has to be that fucking shirt.

“Ei-chan, you’re staring. See something you like?”

Well, he can’t say he likes it, but he also doesn’t hate it. Maybe he’ll throw away that one and buy a similar one for you to wear. This one already has the bad memories attached to it—but then again, you can make new ones together; new, nicer ones.
