Fan Fic Friday!

I'm finally getting in the headspace to be able to read and enjoy fic and oh boy have I been enjoying it! Sharing a few that I've enjoyed reading this past week. For simplicity's sake I'm focusing just on completed works.

People Are Just People (Like You) by @trans-top-stede and @nonplayer-character (plus art!!) Holy shit. Holy shit. This story is stunning. This 24K fic (that also includes some wonderful art) shows Ed struggling to re-enter the world after the COVID lockdowns, all while drawing solace listening to a radio show for aliens. (Hmmm, wonder who could be hosting that?) There is pure, raw emotion baked into each and every word. The loneliness, the feeling of knowing it SHOULD be so easy to just do what you once did so easily but now it's HARD, the desperation, the hope, all while Ed just keeps trying. By the end I was weeping and just feeling in awe of all the little ways humans are simply there for each other, time and time again. I found this work deeply relatable, and I'm sure many others on here will as well. It's an absolute masterpiece and I can't stop thinking about it.

Red Skies at Night by @soupbtch Oh, this is a FUN one, even if I was literally screaming at my laptop for chapter upon chapter because OH MY GOD I KNOW I SAID I LOVE A SLOW BURN BUT WHY MUST THEY BURN SO SLOWLY WHY CAN'T THEY JUST KISS?!?!?! Anyway. Stede's a perfectly bitchy cruise critic, Ed's performing on said cruise ship, sparks fly. This 64K fic is the perfect blend of humor and tension and heartache and of course, a lot of romance. And some great sex. Danny did such a great job using beats from both S1 and S2 to tell a really beautiful story that had me grinning ear to ear nearly the entire time. (Again, nearly, because I also did a lot of screaming.) Absolutely fantastic.

True to Life by @ipomoea-batatas This summary ("Ed and Stede accidentally open an inn for ghosts") had me sold immediately. It's fluffy domestic fic. And a ghost. But not like a ghost that's going to be terrifying and murder you in your sleep, so don't worry if that's not your jam. Just a ghost with a backstory. This fic 28K is SO much fun, filled with impeccable banter that feels like Taika and Rhys just got set loose and were allowed to do whatever they wanted. A bit of a mystery, a bit of cozy domesticity, a lot of fun. Highly recommend.

Flotsam and Jetsam by @/anathxmadevice Looking for a quick read? This one's a little over 5K and is so absurdly lovely. Don't be fooled by the short word count; there are some Big Feels in this fic. Stede's a beachcomber, and Ed runs a pub, and naturally Ed is immediately charmed by Stede's excitement at finding some funky shells. I don't want to give away the ending, but suffice to say it basically left me the human embodiment of this emoji: 🥹. Just a beautiful little bite-sized fic. And there's also a podfic!

Pete & Prejudice by @shieldmaidenofmithrilhall Okay, here's something a little different! All of the above are Ed x Stede, but here's an absolutely charming 14K story about Lucius and Pete! (Although there are some truly adorable Ed x Stede moments in it as well.) Pete and Lucius are dating and everything is amazing, except once a year Pete disappears for "a thing," and now Lucius is determined to find out what it is. I can't say much more without spoiling it, but I will say I started smiling in the very first paragraph and by the time I was done my grin had basically reached my eyebrows. Absolutely perfect characterization, so sweet, so romantic, and some moments that literally made me laugh out loud. Be prepared to fall even more deeply in love with Pete.

If leaked and possibly fake scripts are to be believed, Eddie and the transphobe have “intimacy issues” because she was a nun? Or something like that. Then they see Buck and Tommy on a date so Eddie does ask her to move in (after dating for how many months? Three? Idk he needed a live in babysitter) but they have the whole issues thing and it ends with him saying he needs to talk to her. Shrug emoji?

I keep hearing about these leaked scripts, but haven’t seen them and nobody will tell me where they’re coming from so I have no idea what I think about them, but they got the kiss right and they claim Eddie uses the b-word, which I think most of us guessed would happen anyway.

So idk. Either someone is leaking stuff or is a really good guesser.

But let’s talk about them as if they’re real.

100% called the moving in. It’s so obvious.

Yeah, I mean, I 100% think that because Buck just was made canonically bi, that the show is gonna double-down on Eddie being straight. I’ve thought that since the start of the bi rumors. If they want to keep people from shipping Buddie, they’ll have Eddie call Buck brother (“You can tell me anything, Buck, we’re brothers // “I support you, Buck. You’re my brother” something like that) and to physically separate them they’ll have Eddie more intimate with Marisol. Which we know happens based on a picture the actress took in her trailer. So it doesn’t surprise me AT ALL that he’s ask her to move in. The timeline is all wonky. I did the math and if it’s two weeks from the cruise, and the cruise was a week long, and the cruise started on the last day of season 6, then Eddie and Marisol have only been together for the length of time since his recovery to now. I thought they’d be living together when the season started, so this just goes with what I thought would happen.

A NUN?! Lmao. She can’t just be religious, no, she has to be a nun. She can’t just have intimacy issues because sex is scary and intimate, nope nun. This is what happens when the character is literally a blank slate.

I hope that ending talk happens before she moves in, because if not I honestly don’t think we’ll ever get rid of her. If she moves in and Eddie decides “nope” it’s gonna feel like a Taylor Kelly part 2 type of thing where the girl moves in and the guy realizes he made a mistake. I don’t think the show will do that twice. Once she’s in, the show will keep her in, especially if they want to push Eddie being as straight as possible. Not to say she won’t leave in season 8, but she’s be around for the rest of season 7 for sure, without a doubt

Like if they want to have Buddie go canon and have Eddie covering feelings by inviting her to live with him, I’m here for it… But I just don’t think that’s what the show is gonna do at this point. If that happens it’ll be in season 8. I hope I’m wrong and they break up

⛔ Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped?

ohoho, so many. ive posted excerpts from a few on ao3, such as the gwourtney tdwt rewrite that i scrapped & the trent comes back to tdwt instead of duncan au that i only wrote one chapter for. the rest are locked away in my files and seldom looked at.

there's a fic for a new season back on the island that takes place a year or so after tdrr with all new challenges that i gave up on after like two and a half chapters (nemma was the main couple for that one to give you a sense of how long ago i wrote it lol).

there's a tdas fic from alejandro noah courtney and gwen's povs (guess what the main ships are...) that i planned out extensively and then started writing for that i haven't worked on in years, probably because the actual writing of it didn't seem nearly as good as the planning did.

there's a really old gwent & nemma fic that i think was an au of the black friday musical? idk what i was thinking. it was bad. it was nonsensical and it was bad.

and then there was this whole high school au that mostly focused on the theatre department and was absolutely based on my high school that was a hyperspecific flavor of weird (us students described it as a combination of a summer camp and a cult so uh... i guess that isn't too far off from tdi).

there was also a post tdrr season i planned out that took place on a cruise ship and contestants competed in trios? i read the one and only chapter i wrote for that and apparently alejandro had a younger sister named marcela who is honestly kind of an icon lol i should bring her back for a different fic or something.

and pretty much assume that for every season of total drama, i had at least one rewrite planned that i eventually abandoned. honestly it's sort of a long term goal of mine to write my own version of every season of td. i've got tdwt with slippery slopes, tdrr with amicus curiae, and eventually tdi with the courtney time travel au. we'll see how long that takes lmao it's already been over a year and i'm like 40% done at the most.

❌ What's a trope you will never write?

probably any kind of soulmate au. i just don't like the idea of a romance that's so predestined that there isn't any real development between the characters. i like to read and write feelings growing organically, and when the characters instantly lock eyes and have this automatic deep connection it just feels very artificial to me. that's not to say that all soulmate aus are like that, and there's actually one or two (non td) that i enjoy and regularly reread.

but i think to write a soulmate au i would need a very strong plot revolving around soulmarks and whatnot and i would rather just have the plot without the soulmates. i feel like the concept of soulmates implies that there's only one person a character can have a meaningful relationship with and once they find that person the relationship will be perfect.

i like reading/writing about the struggles that come with making the choice to be with someone you love without any certainty that they'll be your perfect person forever. the fact that you don't have that certainty but choose to stay and foster a relationship and have that hope for a bright future together makes it a lot more meaningful to me. i also feel like soulmate aus tend to prioritize romance much higher than friendship and those are two kinds of relationships that i like to place on equal ground in my writing.

im not trying to say that all soulmate aus are bad, or that ppl shouldn't enjoy them. they can absolutely be some people's jam and if it makes you happy then go for it! there are definitely tropes i like that other people don't for valid reasons and that's all okay.

What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

Hmm probably angsty sibling relationships would be the top thing!! They make me go a bit feral ok. I like writing long emotional conversations where nobody is saying quite what they want to because they're too repressed and then. and then. you get to the cathartic climax. and will they say the thing?? Will they admit it??? Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, but that's probably one of my favourite "template scenes" to write: the conflict between what people are feeling and what they're willing to confess to feeling.

This is closely related to another thing I enjoy writing where you just Put The People In A Room. I'm aware this sounds shippy but I actually prefer it with, like, a toxic family dynamic. They are In A Room. Now they must talk. It will not end well. For this reason I'm always obsessed with those films where like the large extended family gathers on a cruise ship or at a funeral or for the holidays and there are all these DYNAMICS and PROBLEMS and HISTORIES that must be addressed. This got tangential. Also I probably write more of these in my head than I actually publish. Several of my original short stories also follow this template, though, so it's definitely a Thing of mine.

Imagery: I think I write a lot of light imagery! I don't notice it most of the time, but in silmfic where I always have to be aware of Treelight vs darkness vs sun and moon, I've realised that I do tend to pay attention to the way a scene is lit quite often.

Choices Insiders May 2023

Hello everyone, here we go once again with this months Insiders

I haven't seen much about this, so I can't really say anything.

Roommates with Benefits. Yeah, I am finding this one to be a bit of a wtf. But I am curious to see how it plays out.

As of Friday, we'll be 2/3 of the way through Kiss of Death. There is definitely a Romeo & Juliet element to it with the romance between the MC & Vic. I'm interested to see how this will play out with the final third.

I really do like the design of this cover. Also Looking forward to the fact that there is a heavy chance there will be a cat in this one. With the description we currently have, I am wondering if this will have a similar approach with the leads as they have with Getaway Girls by having it be multiple point of view.

One thing I do like with the cover is the different colour crystals on their necklaces and wonder if it means they might have different coloured magic like how the different Strange's do in Multiverse of Madness.

I'm useless with emojis. So I won't have a try.

I like these, Kindred is the book I am looking forward to most with new new titles and really interested to see what the story will be like.

It's been confirmed that we have five gender of choice books this year and Crimes is one of those. The others that we know of are Blades 2, Alpha, and Dirty Little Secrets.

It does feel like we don't have as many opportunities to get diamonds outside of playing chapters than we used to.

The Billionaire's Baby - I really can't get an idea of this book. Is MC the child of a billionaire?? Or is it a new pregnancy book?? I really don't know. Let me know what you think.

Dirty Little Secrets - I think this is going to be a mystery book, but I don't know if it will be a Single Love Interest or multiple Love Interest book.

Alpha - We know that this is one of the gender of choice MC books. It is safe to assume this will be Werewolf book, but again, I don't know what to expect with plot and number of Love Interests.

Ship of Dreams - I'm still not sure if this is going to be a cruise story or a historical story, or a historical cruise.

Unbridled: An Untameable Story - Given how they ended Untameable, I think this is the story that will focus on Mandy and Austin. Whether it is THE Untamable BK2 or if it is it's own thing and Untameable 2 is another thing, I don't know.

First Comes Love is this month's wide release, I know which version of Blake I will be picking.

Crimes of Passion 2

So it sounds as though BK2 will be opening at the airport where BK1 ended and given the extra scene, I think it is going to focus on the mystery of what happened to Trystan's ex-fiancée, which could mean taking the story to Drakovia. Certainly a story to kick off the summer.

Blades of Light and Shadow 2

We have a release month! It's hard to believe it's actually here after about two years since the first book. I am really interested to see what the story will be like and who the new Love Interests are.

shanti: this girl is a yapper the same way rottweilers are. she came into this world screaming and by god she'll go out of it that way even if the screaming lands her the best seat in the guillotine house. give her a random wikipedia article title and she'll unleash a rant on the subject with so much passion you'll ignore how 110% of her facts are either 4chan urban legends or bullshit technobabble from the likes of star trek. she'll start every conversation with the word 'also' as though she's been carrying the tête-à-tête (pronounced by her as tit-a-tit, obviously) on through snores alone.

niles: i say this knowing i crafted him to be my ideal male main character — nilesy is god’s most autistic soldier and only acknowledges social cues when they're printed in 12-point courier. he talks more when he's nervous and unfortunately for everyone within the vicinity he is always nervous. about half his words total are apologies for events that were/are/will be absolutely out of his control. this only gets worse when he gets to hollywood because no american high school offers an elective in britishisms. he spends hours every day explaining the etymology of sayings like 'takes the biscuit' with apa citations and only shuts down if he realises he didn't list the citations in alphabetical order.

paisley: the most active listener on the planet. would make symphonies out of sympathetic nods and appropriately flabbergasted gasps regardless of whether she was acting as the audience to teenage gossip or the sealing of the magna carta. has a lot to say herself but won't intentionally steamroll over others to get to her point. speaks just as much with body language. if she's not tapping her feet you should check if she still feels sensation in said feet. if she's not fidgeting with her earrings you should check if she's lost them for the fiftieth time today. it's a very intuitive system.

victoria: a trained yapper. knows every synonym to 'stunning' in existence solely to describe herself. usually expresses herself in emojis, though, and if in truly dire circumstances, emoticons, like the cavepeople of the 1980s. tends to switch topics a lot in quick succession due to instatiktoktube attention span. parrots trends faster than instatiktoktube can produce them. most likely to send a 1,000 word text to the group chat because her pasta arrived slightly south of boiling. least likely to confront anyone in real life about it because she'd prefer a repeat of her cruise ship crashing into an island with an active volcano on it than a playback of her one month stint as a fast food cashier.

addison: also a trained yapper but she's been in the business long enough to be her social battery drains like an iphone set to the brightness of the sun. she opens her mouth for interviews and meals and that's it. and sometimes not even the latter. her mother has told her roughly two things regarding the subject of yapping: if she starts yapping, she will start complaining; if she starts complaining, she will start being unattractive to men. her mother was only right about the first part.

hanna: treats talking like a 9-5 and has been bargaining with everyone around her to fire her from the position of cardboard chatterbox for eternity. shanti's known her since first grade and last heard her say a non-scripted sentence over ten words in second grade. she knows little more than fingerspelling in sign language but in true theatre kid fashion her hands have done more talking than the president ever will. which president? all of them. in the history of the universe.

Måneskin - Honey! (Are U Coming?), although Fifteen's theme from Doctor Who has grasped me over the last few days. More music-specific stuff here!

2. Album of the year?

Strictly speaking the only full album I heard was Måneskin - Rush, and that had… some issues even though I love most of it, haha.

Can we count the BG3 soundtrack as a new artist?

4. Movie of the year?

I rewatched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory last night and that was... it, so that, I guess!

5. TV show of the year?

I still haven't recovered from Good Omens season 2.

6. Episode of TV or webisode that defined the year for you?

Episode 2.06 of Good Omens, Doctor Who - all four specials.

7. Favourite actor of the year?

Honestly it's gotta be David Tennant. Like, between Good Omens and Doctor Who? Yeah. Neil Newbon comes in a very close second, though!

8. Game of the year?

It's a. It's actually a tie which is goddamn unheard of in a Zelda release year, but Baldur's Gate 3 genuinely nearly kicked Tears of the Kingdom aside??

9. Best month for you this year?

Oh man tricky. Do I say October because I went on my first actual proper holiday in eight and a half years? November for the Maneskin concert? Or do they lose points because I had COVID in late Oct/early Nov? Let's skip both and go with June (Vivid down in Sydney and the single greatest sorbet I've ever tried, a super fun VtM tabletop session, and got Operation YEETerus more or less confirmed)!

10. Something that made you cry this year?

Cried pretty much the whole way through the end of Tears of the Kingdom, does that count?

11. Something you want to do again next year?

Ooh I'd love to go back down to Sydney for Vivid!

Super chill. Ordered pizza and ate ice cream, and a few days earlier when my brother came up, we went to one of our favourite Lebanese restaurants.

A haul from Sydney in January. Hell Followed With Us and Legends and Lattes were bought new, as were most of the CDs. The other three books and the Sigur Ros CD were second-hand.

Okay so on the cruise (late October, I'm gonna say it counts) each floor on the stairwell nearest our cabin had these like, sailing/ships/cruising-type collages, right? Golden Age of Sail, 50s cruising, all that stuff. Which is fine! Great! Except one of them was this!

For the love of god, why would you think an image of the Titanic sinking would be appropriate for a cruise ship?!

18. A memorable meal this year?

The hazelnut sorbet of the gods. Listen. Sydneysiders, listen, if Rivareno Gelato is doing the hazelnut that week you have to try it.

19. What're you excited about for next year?

Australian Literature Festival at Sea! Not until December, but it should be fun as hell!

20. What's something you learned this year?

I did a course on how to make an author site! I should. Do that.

21. What's something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?

We started fixing up the old, kinda leaking upstairs bathroom! Gonna be moving back upstairs once it's done!

22. Favourite place you visited this year?

Eden in southern NSW, and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Hobart <3 Both on the cruise. Eden was absolutely gorgeous and Bonorong had critters.

23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?

You're gonna get COVID on the cruise. Yes, even wearing your mask and sanitising every five seconds. Bring decongestants because you'll also pick up sinusitis at the same time.

25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one

Probably the two main ones are my first two BG3 characters? A custom Tav, Ta'varin 'Tae' Arkenval, and my beloved Durge baby, Tavias. This makes me think of Yu! My five-years post game Hat Kid

Hailing from a universe where the normal game is one giant Death Wish Gauntlet and the Death Wishes are twice as unforgiving, she's still a generally cheerful and energetic kid. Ended up getting her nickname from Mustache Girl cause she mistook "Hey You" as her being given a name.

She's an alien species known as a Time Hoarder, created by another species to be direct guardians of Time Pieces; raised by their partner space ships to do their work. She's in her early teens as of now and is still in the process of collecting and protecting any Time Pieces found, including her own.

Currently lives with her universes' Conductor and his wife, when not on her ship. Affectionately calls them her grandpa and grandma, once she and the Conductor actual reconciled during the Arctic Cruise. Doesn't get along with DJ Grooves whatsoever. You don't just get over someone trying to kill you and yelling that they hate you when you defend yourself after all. Unlike Conductor, he hasn't apologized and is actively avoiding Yu. Snatcher has her in a permanent soul contract due to Death Wish and is. Not kind about it. The two have a weird rivalry going on. Her Bow Kid- Affectionately names Chai- is around too and made a name for herself as an actress after losing her ship entirely. Yu is still her best friend and the two of them are actively helping Mustache Girl- whom I've names Iris- with broadening her worldview and working through the trauma the Mafia of Cooks caused her.

I adore her very much and I'm still writing her on discord on-and-off as her muse comes and goes!

Love how not but two months ago this bitch was complaining about their abusive parent being abusive to them and how they want to distance themselves. But ooooo no can't possible take their car to the beach, we all have to ride together, with the abusers, in the same car, for 4 hours. 🙃🙃🙃

Like they ALL talk about this person being abusive and how we have to walk on egg shells, that they will 100% try to enforce their will on us this whole trip but 👉👈 we just can't possibly do anything to give us a way out. That's just too expensive. THEN MAYBE DONT DO THIS STUPID FUCKING TRIP.

The whole lead up to this was the same bitch who has been hurt before by their family whine and complain that their family is trying to get them to do a cruise because they all just wanna gamble on a cruise ship. But yes we love their input and having them around because they're family 🙃🙃.

I truly do not understand why they can't just say NO. It kills me having to be around people who KNOW FOR A FACT that the people they will spend their important life event with are going to abuse them. I'm not trying to make this about me, it's just so fucking annoying to see an abuse pattern so plainly and to tell everyone over and over again that it's not going to magically change because they're having an important life event. ITS ALL BS TO KEEP ABUSING YOU. Abusers will feign love to keep you around and keep hurting you. It's textbook and obvious.

📚 A song or album you could write a term paper on hm, this is hard. the first one to come to mind that i could write a considerable amount on from both a lyrical perspective and a personal interpretation + experience would probably be "the night we met." but it would be grueling, i'm not going to lie and say i could easily pop it out lol

📅 A song that calls up a very specific time and place for you "stand by you" by rachel platten is one. i remember the first time i heard it (other than on commercials) was on the pool deck of the train cruise at night. i was late to her show, but ended up catching the end, thus that song. it was moving (and cliche, i admit) to hear "just a small boat in the ocean, sending big waves into motion" on a literal ship in the middle of the atlantic.

👶 The first song you remember enjoying probably something that's classic late 90s to early 2000s like "all star" or "who let the dogs out." those stand out as songs i remember little me absolutely bopping to.

2022: Year in Review

One hour before 2023. The blinking cursor taunts me: you’re missing the midnight fireworks for this. The last minutes of 2022 trickle by, and I bang away at my keyboard, gasping for words.

I push myself to keep going. These year-in-review posts have become an annual tradition of sorts. (Here’s 2019, 2020, and 2021) I see it as my best chance to reflect upon this particular trip around the sun, if only for the benefit of my future self.

2022, what a rollercoaster. A packed highlight reel. Eventful on so many levels. Mighty hard to put into words.

Last year, I spoke about living in the moment more — to surrender to the white spaces of life and be more present.

This year, surrender I did. Probably a bit too much. Spontaneous travels and impulse shopping. Live events and concerts. Overpriced meals at fancy restaurants.

In programming, there is this concept called the greedy algorithm. It is an approach for solving problems that selects the best local option available at the moment, without regard for the results down the line. Imagine someone who could only see three feet in front and blinders everywhere else. How would that person move towards a destination? Greedy algorithms are costly to run because they only look at the immediate next move — not optimal for outcomes that require a longer series of steps. In millennial lingo, YOLO.

I have to admit — that was largely how I operated in 2022.

Booking a plane ticket out of the blue, taking a backpack and landing in a different country the next day. No itinerary, no hotel bookings, just going with the flow of whatever we fancy at the moment. Feel like eating street food? Go. Shopping? Go. Walk around and explore? By all means. I have to thank Hyejoo for putting up with me.

2022 was the year when we finally saw the light at the end of the Covid tunnel, when the world finally reopened. Call it revenge travel or revenge spending. I see it as taking back the reins of life and calling the shots once more.

Touching grass, sand, gravel, and ice. Seeing the northern lights on a windy winter night. Riding a boat across a lake surrounded by ancient glaciers. Driving thousands of kilometers to hunt for the most picture-perfect waterfalls. Walking for hours on Mars-like terrain to visit an old plane wreck. Playing basketball inside a cruise ship. Chasing high after high.

Seamless though virtual interactions have become, nothing could replace real, live encounters and experiences. And so I went out of my way to catch live events this year. There is something deeply human and entrancing about being one with the crowd, connecting with a tribe to celebrate those epic moments — that electrifying Messi goal, that Ferrari overtake, our favorite band belting out the anthems of our youth. The pandemic took all these away from us, and we are here to take them back.

This year was all about shunning the virtual and embracing the real.

One of the best real things in life is the joy of reconnecting in person. Sharing a meal with an old friend you may not have seen for years, then trading stories and bantering like you just saw each other yesterday. Exchanging hugs with family after years of cycling through GIFs and emojis over Viber. Catching up on a pent-up torrent of stories and emotions. No way we could take these for granted after the last three years. I count myself lucky that my 2022 had these in spades.

Talking about live performances, I taught my first ever face-to-face classes this year. I didn’t know it before, but to stand in front of a group of learners and talk for an entire day — it’s such a visceral sensation. You cannot not be present. You have to completely give in to the moment.

It always feels terrifying, even electrifying. Exerting mind, body, and spirit to do justice to the subject matter you cover. Answering students’ questions hoping their eyes light up when that aha moment hits them.

Teaching is such a privilege, a joy, and a responsibility I am still coming to terms with. I still cannot grasp that I am now a teacher. It marks such a massive turning of the tide, breaking open a new life chapter for me. Amid my spontaneous escapades this year, rigid teaching schedules feels incongruous. Like fitting into an oversized shirt. Like my identity has yet to catch up with my profession.

I don’t know if it ever would. Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn’t. I still prefer to see myself as a learner who just so happens to have a platform. It is exciting and daunting to realize that any content I consume can now be potential material I could use for teaching. I sometimes press pause on a podcast, type out a note, and mark it as teaching material.

I aim to have a lot more of that for 2023 — to bring my focus back to learning. My challenge is to break out of my cocoon, put myself out there, and learn in public.

2022 upended many of the assumptions I held dearly. A lot of what I held true turned out to be smoke and mirrors. In terms of finances, it was a write-off year. Since graduating from university in 2010, we have enjoyed massive economic growth all the way — an era of near-zero interest rates, ascendant internet giants, and democratizing technology. In this corner of the world, in the industry I used to inhabit, we were all spoiled kids who acted like the party would never end.

Well, the party kind of ended this year. The beginning of a war and the return of autocracy. Rising interest rates, declining growth stocks, and changing regimes. The pandemic tailwind got exposed as a flash-in-the-pan fantasy, while inflation proved to be a sticky scourge.

The world in 2022 went through its own turning of the tide. It felt like the end of an era.

It sure wasn’t a great year to be a tech optimist, but new opportunities beckon and my optimism remains steadfast. The metaverse is buzzing and the digital train continues to march on. And AI, man. My first encounter with ChatGPT was bone-chilling, like talking to an alien oracle. After making it craft a college-level essay in a matter of seconds, I almost had a mini existential crisis. What does it mean to be human? What does the future hold for us?

We live in strange yet exciting times.

Surrendering to the moment may be fun, but there are only so many highs to chase. As the tides turn I know I must learn to shift the course, which leads to the challenge for myself this coming year: to focus back on the long-term, the exponential, and the far-reaching. To causes greater than myself. To never stop learning.

hi everyone! this is a small note to say i will be on vacation from now till august 23. since i’m going on a cruise and won’t have access to wifi most of the time, i won’t be able to respond to threads or ims during this point but i will be back after that! if you need me urgently for something, your best bet is to reach me on twitter on the 12th or 13th, aka before any important activities start. otherwise, see you in like 10 days! 

IC, sungwoon has returned to his hometown to visit his grandfather. since the location is pretty rural, he has very limited access to wifi and won’t be checking his phone at all until he returns to seoul on august 26. timeline wise, he left the day after episode 7 of the mgas was filmed and hasn’t been in contact with any of his friends since then. he didn’t inform anyone of his vacation, so you can assume that he’s gone dark. any attempt to contact him will be met with silence! he’s reevaluating some stuff while he’s home and i’ll post a full update for him once i’m back. 

anyways, thank you guys for all the support you’ve given sungwoon during the mgas!! even if he’s been a mess during most of it, we appreciate it a lot!
