Erin, would you marry Ian knowing your dad and brother hate him?
Ask my muse personal questions!
Tumblr media
"If Ian asked me to marry him, I'd still say yes because he makes me so happy and I feel like if I had to wait for their approval, I'd never get married at all. I'd just prefer that they didn't hate the love of my life. I'd like for them to give him a real chance. Because I really want my wedding to be a happy occasion. I want my dad to walk me down the aisle and give me away. As things stand, I don't know how any of that plays out. Would he give me away to a man he hates? And what about the news of the engagement? That's not something I want to have to worry about breaking to anyone let alone my own family."
"There's just a lot to worry about in a situation where my dad and brother still hate Ian. I don't want the happiest time in my life to be clouded in all this drama and dread. I want everyone to be happy for us. But I also don't want to have to put my future and happiness with Ian off because they might hate the choices I make. So I guess that's where I'm at..."

Weekly Reading Update (12/04/23)
Tumblr media
Thoughts and reviews under the cut (also, have you ever seen a weirder combination of books lol)
In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire (10/10)
I absolutely loved this book, but I will be billing Seanan McGuire for my therapy. She does an amazing job of writing these stories that you already know the ending to, and it doesn't make it any more gut-wrenching when the children are rejected or expelled. I see a lot of myself in Lundy, which only made it hit harder, and I loved the world of the Goblin Market. I really enjoyed seeing what would be referred to as a High Logic world with hard and fast rules and seeing how the characters worked within them (or around them). The side characters were, as usual, amazing, and they really helped bring the story together.
Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett (10/10)
I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did! This was a really good, fast-paced adult fantasy; it was a bit refreshing since adult high fantasy tends to be much slower. Despite being more action-oriented, it still had strong characters and the beginnings of a good message. I suspect it'll be elaborated upon more in the later books. The magic system was so detailed and unique, exactly what I want from worldbuilding, and I'm really interested to see if we'll get more of the world outside Tevanne in the rest of the series.
Cinder Ella by S. T. Lynn (5/10)
This is part of a little project I'm doing, and I unfortunately didn't enjoy it very much. I think a fairy tale retelling would do quite well in a shorter format, but this one just falls short. It adds in a bit too much and as a result reads as rushed with not enough time dedicated to any of the scenes or relationships. Also, fairy tales tend to go by the "that's the way it is" rule of worldbuilding, which this book tries to do, but it raises too many questions to get away with not answering any of them. For example, the increased role of the fairy godmother brings up a lot of worldbuilding implications that the book just doesn't have the space to address.
Redfang Royal by Lola Rock (7/10)
Ok, I've never talked about these books before because they are the guiltiest of my guilty pleasures, but I'm trying to get over that. I'm a huge fan of Lola Rock's Pack Darling duology, so I've been looking forward to this book for a while. I finished it in a day, and I definitely enjoyed it. I did find the plot a little convoluted, and I wish it had been split into two parts like Pack Darling. The ending in particular feels a little rushed; I feel like there's a lot of stuff in Sol's backstory that was never explained to her pack. Still, I really liked the romance dynamic, and the love interests were quite different from the other series, which I appreciated.
Forget Me Knot by Marie McKay (CR, 48%)
Another of my guilty pleasures, this one is much darker than Lola Rock's books. All the characters have trauma upon trauma, but I can definitely see how things are going to resolve. Also, McKay's take on the omegaverse (yes, these are omegaverse novels if you haven't figured it out) is pretty unique with some interesting worldbuilding that adds a bit more to the story. I wonder if that worldbuilding has anything to do with why most of the main characters are named after objects (i.e. Arsenal, Riot, Ice). So far, I like Onyx, the main character; she's pretty different from what I've seen in this genre before, and she's a breath of fresh air.
Rising Storm by Erin Hunter (CR, 15%)
The Warriors reread continues, and I've remembered what takes place in this book. Unfortunately, I think that other than Fire and Ice, this is my least favorite of the first series. Still, the nostalgia does a lot of the heavy lifting for these books, especially since cat politics would probably intrigue me on its own today.
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson (3%)
My first Brandon Sanderson novel! I was initially going to start with Mistborn, but this is required reading from my book club. (Literally. There's a group of us that choose a separate book each month that we have to read.) So far, I really like the narration style. It reminds me of Diana Wynne Jones and other classic fantasy authors, which happens to be my favorite kind of writing.

Fic Writing Review 2023
tagged by @chaos-monkeyy - thank you and dang, you're right, I do love excuses for stats and graphs and suchlike! You know me so well.
AO3 writing stats
204 630 words (this number astonishes me, tbh), and 85 fanworks (including 6 collabs!!), for an average of 2407 words per work.
Shortest fic: 100 words; Longest fic: 9208 words (collab); 6290 words (non-collab).
I wrote m/m, f/f, m/f, multi, other, and gen categories (neat!)
I dabbled a little in graphics stuff and made some moodboards, so the fanworks breakdown is: 84 fic entries, 1 graphic entry.
Top 5 works by kudos
Lost Somewhere (Fellow Travelers) -> I am a bit surprised that this was my most kudos'd fic! Surprised in a good way!
On the Job (Stargate Atlantis AU)
The Line is Thin, Now (Stargate Atlantis)
Seasonality (Stargate Atlantis)
Down to Earth (Stargate Atlantis AU)
I made a chart and all (gosh, what does it kind of look like???):
Tumblr media
Fandoms
I primarily wrote in Stargate Atlantis fandom (surprise!), but I branched out a bit too! Other fandoms were (in order most frequently->least frequently and then alphabetically when tied): Stargate SG1; Original Fiction; Peacemaker; Star Trek: Strange New Worlds; Who is Erin Carter?; Coffin Jackson; due South (crossover with SGA/SG1); Echoes; Firefly; Star Trek: Picard; Star Trek: TNG (crossover with SGA).
Most frequent fandoms
Stargate Atlantis (66)
Stargate SG1 (13)
Original work (4) (!!)
Peacemaker, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and Who is Erin Carter? all tie for 4th place, with 2 fics each
Tags and more!
Most-written characters
John Sheppard (50) (wtf, I thought it would be Lorne) (I'm falling down on the Lorne job here) (Lorne would probably look at me sternly) (oh no, terrible)
Evan Lorne (43) (okay, that's not bad, though)
Rodney McKay (26)
Ronon Dex (16)
Teyla Emmagan (15)
Most-written ships
Evan Lorne/John Sheppard (16)
Evan Lorne/Rodney McKay (8)
Rodney McKay/John Sheppard (7) and Cameron Mitchell/John Sheppard (7)
Ronon Dex/Evan Lorne (6)
John Sheppard/Todd the Wraith (5)
Tumblr media
Top Additional Tags
Blow Jobs (21) (shock! le gasp!) (25% of my 2023 fics)
Alternate Universe (15) (yeah, that checks out)
Dubious consent (14) (yeah, that really checks out)
Maybe it's pushing it, but I think I need to include Humor here too, because it turns out I used it 9 times.
Ratings breakdown
Explicit and Teen+ tie at 32 works each. Mature = 14. General Audiences = 7.
A few other things
I wrote 26 gift fics (most for exchanges or organized events), and wrote 5 things for the Stargate Kink Meme. I had set a mini-goal of trying to reach a total of 300 works on AO3 this year. I didn't make it, but I did get to 298 (with a last-minute addition yesterday), which is pretty sweet.
Tag taggy tag-tag: Anyone who wants to do this! And go nuts! Here are some guidelines/rules if you want them!
Feel free to show whatever stats you have. Only want to show Ao3 stats? Rock on. Want to include some quantitative info instead of stats? Please do this. Want to change how yours is presented? Absolutely do that. Would rather eat glass than do this? Please don’t eat glass but don’t feel like you have to do this either.

words for the wips (you can pick any wip to share): fire, yours, kitchen, and/or suit
I don't have fire in any of my WIPs right now, but I checked fiery and got this from my noir SGA fic:
“This is Carter and McKay Investigations, right?” The woman was gorgeous, even with her figure mostly hidden by a trenchcoat. The defiant cant of her chin was in stark contrast to her uncertain tone, and Rodney tried to shake off the distraction of her red, red lips and fiery curls.
Apparently, the only times I've written "yours" is as part of already posted fics. So here's a "your" from Hoping that you're happy now:
Erin is a ragdoll in her arms by the time Peg walks over to BJ and Hawkeye. "BJ? I think it's time your daughter and I said goodnight." Half out of his chair, BJ asks, "Do you need help putting her to bed?" She waves him off, "No, she's out. I think I can handle her by myself tonight. You should stay up talking. Although," Peg turns to Hawkeye as if she's just had a brilliant idea. "Hawkeye, would you be a dear and let BJ stay with you tonight? He'll wake up Erin if he comes in late, and I'm afraid she'd never get to sleep again after."
Ooh, kitchen is the in BJ is the worst!
Daniel puts the phone down with a frown. That wasn't Peggy on the phone. And he knows BJ hasn't responded to anything Hawkeye's written in the years since the war. He can't help the worry that seeps into his voice as he yells from the office, "Hawkeye! Phone for you." The sound of his son practically falling down the stairs follows, and he shakes his head. That boy has an unhealthy relationship with gravity. "I've got it in the kitchen. You can hang up now!" It's like high school all over again. Daniel sighs and goes back to reviewing the appointment book for the day and gets lost in the file of yet another expectant mother who he remembers as a baby in his arms.
This is the only instance of suit I found, from the noir fic again:
Rodney hid his startlement with a disapproving frown. He took quick stock of the man taking cover in the darkened doorway next to Teyla’s. Even with this rain, he wasn’t wearing a hat or jacket, but the shoulders of his suit were only damp, and his shock of messy black hair wasn’t slicked to his forehead as you’d expect. Teyla didn’t allow smoking in her club, which was actually one of the reasons Rodney had started drinking there, even before he’d become friends with the owner. The man must be desperate for a smoke if he was huddling out here.

3, 4 and 16!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
In no particular order, my top 5 romances were:
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe
Convergence of Desire by Felicity Niven
The Duchess by Sophie Jordan
The Notorious Lord Knightly by Lorraine Heath
The Duke Starts a Scandal by Sophie Jordan
In no particular order, my top 5 nonfiction books were:
And There Was Light by Jon Meacham
Romney: A Reckoning by McKay Coppins
Giving Up The Ghost by Hilary Mantel
Women of Will: Following the Feminine in Shakespeare's Plays by Tina Packer
How Beautiful It Is and How Easily It Can Be Broken by Daniel Mendelsohn
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
Erin Langston, Felicity Niven
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
I hate to say this but The Woman In Me by Britney Spears like the reality is that I think Britney did and possibly still does need a conservatorship, even though her father's was clearly abusive. I think she comes across as much less healthy than she probably intended to and maybe I'm projecting, but as someone with not dissimilar health issues, I can tell.

Tumblr media
Across the Spider-verse (2023) Dir. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson
What can i even say about this movie. It one i haven't stopped thinking about for the last few days. Everything in the movie is amazing, from the visual to the story to how it portrays the characters. And the charater design!!!!! Literally, the whole reason i saw the movie!!!! And that one chase scene!!!! The whole part was just an amazing and deffo my favourite part. From beginning to end, i was wrapped up in the story the movie is trying to tell. It is probably one of the best movies I've seen all year. (10/10)
Erin Brockovich (2000) Dir. Steven Soderbergh
I like this. I thought Julie Andrews was really good as Erin. It was good (7/10)
Misha and the wolves (2021)
It grand. I thought the story was really interesting but like noting amazeing. I kinda forgot i watched it lol so (5/10)
Do Revenge (2022) Dir. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
I love this movie. This is probaye the 3rd time i rewated it. I love Just everything about it, especially the fashion, like it just say so much about the character abd everthing(9/10)
The Big Short (2015) Dir. Adam McKay
I thought this was good. I like the editing a lot. I feel like it makes the story more interesting, I guess. With the story being about something as over complex and honesty, bordering banking, the fast-paced editing really sucks you into the story. That, as well as the acting, just makes it really good (8/10)
White chicks (2004) Kennen Ivory Wayans
Funny as shit my god

The Convalescent By Jessica Anthony
This is such a strange book. To both read and think about. It surreal to read, and can confusing to think about (im still not 100% sure about what this book is tryin to say) since so many events in the book reads like folk-lore, which i do really like. This addtions to almost folk-lore like storys telling make the events toward the end of the book (were it really goes off the rails) feel like a natrual progression and one you could maybe even see coming. The to what isn't a terrble complated novel story wise. But it levase enough there to make you want to read on and see where the fuck there going at points. It can be confusing as hell, but i like that, how it not complety clear on what it trying to say. 7/10
Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me By Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell
I got this book ages ago and deicded to reread it and god I love this book. The story is good, and if i were to just read it as a novel i proabyeb think it was grand, but god the art. The art of the book adds so much. I think it evaleds the story to the point of being amazing. I love small used of colour and the way the charater are draw just adds to there charaterisaton alot. (8/10)

He could see it, what Sammy had been talking about. She looked tired, the kind of tired that only came from a broken heart. "I'm going to," Eric replied softly, "--or I'm going to try. To accept it. Sammy and I talked about it, and we're--we're going to give Ian a chance. If you're right and he's changed, then I want you to be happy. And if I've been preventing that, I'm sorry, sweetheart, I'm really sorry."
Tumblr media
The next response wasn't one Erin had been expecting and it completely caught her off guard. This war between them and Ian had seemed to be never-ending that she'd been bracing for the long fight. "You are?" She manages with a slight quiver in her voice as she was overcome with emotion. 'I'm going to try.' How long had she been waiting to hear those words?
"That's all I ever wanted from you, Dad." She says softly. "For you to give him a real and fair chance. He really wants to prove himself to you. I know that if you and Sammy really try with him that you'd see what I've seen all along. That he's a changed man. Our relationship isn't what it was before. We've both grown."
Taking a breath, she tries to reel her emotions back in before they completely got away from her. "Thank you. For saying that," she said once she finds her voice again. "I know forgiveness is something that you and Sammy really struggle with so it means a lot to me that you'll try with Ian."

A coming-of-age tale with a spooky twist!
Maggie McKay hardly knows what to do with herself. After an idyllic childhood of homeschooling with her mother and rough-housing with her older brothers, it's time for Maggie to face the outside world, all on her own. But that means facing high school first. And it also means solving the mystery of the melancholy ghost who has silently followed Maggie throughout her entire life. Maybe it even means making a new friend--one who isn't one of her brothers.
Funny, surprising, and tender, Friends with Boys by Faith Erin Hicks is a pitch perfect YA graphic novel full of spooky supernatural fun. This title has Common Core connections.

CRB/CRS Announces 2024 Walker and McKay Radio Scholars
Tumblr media
The Country Radio Broadcasters (CRB) has announced the 2024 Rusty Walker and Lisa McKay Women in Radio Scholars. This year’s Rusty Walker Scholarship recipients are Gabe Mercer (KMLE/Phoenix & KKWF/Seattle), Erin Bourne (WJEN-FM/Lebanon-Rutland) and Haley Mason (CMG/Athens). The Lisa McKay Women in Radio Scholarship will be awarded to Annie Owens (WPAW/Greensboro) and Emily Harlan (KBAY/San Jose). CRB Scholarship Committee Chairman John Shomby expressed, “This is one of the most satisfying and important parts of our work at CRS. It’s all introducing new broadcasters to CRS, giving them a chance to network with and learn from some of the best in our business.” Each recipient will receive a scholarship package, including registration, hotel accommodations, and airfare for CRS 2024, as well as recognition during the CRS 2024 week. CRS 2024, scheduled from February 28 to March 1, promises a schedule filled with educational panels, virtual networking, and workshops aimed at providing valuable insights and takeaways for attendees. Rules: post the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven’t written ten fics, share as many first-sentences as you have.
I was tagged by @marley--manson
Out of the Blue: The color faded out of his world with every drop of blood on the sand.
Dear Rodney: Rodney generally avoids the mail - he hasn’t received any personal written mail in years now that everyone he knows uses email.
Dear John: Mitch and Dex made fun of him when they realized all his letters were technically Dear John letters, especially when they found out Nancy actually began every letter that way.
Sinew and Satin: "Ugh, this is disgusting."
Autopilot: Due to time differences on either side of the gate, he’s been up for 37 hours straight, and all he wants is to collapse onto his bed face first.
AC/DCs (What about those who swing both ways?): To be fair, the running and violence were pretty significant reasons why Rodney McKay hadn't wanted to join Sheppard's gate team.
The McMurdo Chess Club: As he came in through the garage, Rodney heard Jeannie talking to someone, and it took him a few moments to realize that someone was Sheppard.
Defined: “Aagh! Major, why are you so– so–”
I'm missing you like I used to: Peg pores over the letters at night when BJ has to take a night shift and Erin's sleeping.
Sitting here tonight: Margaret wrote him letters like clockwork once a week, starting almost as soon as he made it back to the States.
Wow, I really like letters. This is not news to me, but 4/10 of these stories are about letters. I’m also glad the one explicit one starts with “Ugh, this is disgusting.” That’s a really appealing way to start porn. I’m not sure what all this says about my writing, but I definitely see some patterns.
Anyone should feel free to consider themselves tagged.
