November (and October) Reading Wrap up!✨️
As I only read one book in October, I am combining it into this post!
Finale by Stephanie Garber - 4⭐️, read in one sitting! A wild ride all the way through just like the other Caraval books!
The dragon's promise by Elizabeth Lim - 3⭐️, struggled a bit with the pacing, but do enjoy the characters in this series!
Dracula by Bram Stoker (via dracula daily) - 4⭐️, thank you to dracula daily for actually getting me to read Dracula all the way through! Rightfully so a classic, and it's influence is still seen in media today!
Iris Kelly doesn't date by Ashley Herring Blake - 4.5⭐️, another solid charming romance by Ashley Herring Blake! All the books just hit right for me!
A court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas - 2⭐️, a decent pay off to reading the series, love a lot of the magic concepts but struggle to enjoy the writting style and romance dynamics (probably not going to continue this series unless a book about Lucien and Elain gets manifested)
Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross - 4.5⭐️, love the world building, the characters and the magic/divine aspects!
Dragon age: the missing - 3⭐️, I love dragon age a lot, just wish a little more happened in this comic!
Percy Jackson and the lightning thief by Rick Riordan - 3⭐️, read for the first time as an adult and I understand why everyone loved it! Wish I had read it growing up.
Honey & Spice by Bolu Babalola - 4⭐️, funny, cute and filled with drama!

ESMA's branding journey: a strategic and impactful approach
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) recently underwent a branding overhaul, entrusting the mission to revitalise its image to the innovative agency, #Pageinextremis. This was no small feat, as ESMA is a highly respected institution that plays a crucial role in ensuring the stability and integrity of the EU's financial markets. But #Pageinextremis was up for the challenge.
Working closely with the ESMA Communication team, they developed a visual identity that fully encapsulates the institution's strategy for 2023-2028, focusing on sustainability, technology, and data innovation. The new logo and visual identity is a bold and modern design that represents the dynamic nature of the financial markets, reflecting the institution's professionalism and authority.
With the new visual identity, ESMA aims to better connect with its stakeholders. This unique design is a testament to that commitment. It is a significant step forward in modernising the financial industry and better connecting with stakeholders. The institution's mission is to ensure the stability and integrity of the EU's financial markets, and this new design reflects that mission.
Overall, the new visual identity is a powerful and impactful representation of ESMA's mission and values, sure to captivate its audience. The hard work and dedication of the team behind this project —Solveig Kleiveland, Sarah Vandenbergh-Edwards, Emilie Brakha, Greta Di Pierri, Iris Hude, Dan Nacu-Manole and David Cliffe— have paid off, resulting in a visual identity that truly represents the institution.
At #pageinextremis, we understand the power of a strong brand. With 28 years of branding experience under our belt, we have developed a unique methodology for a successful branding process that will take your brand to new heights.
Our process begins with the Clarify phase, where we align the organisational effort with the brand strategy. By starting from the overarching strategy and distilling it to the level of the brand strategy, we ensure that everyone is on the same page. We also change perspective and put ourselves in the shoes of the audience, partners, analysts, competitors, and potential future employees. This allows us to see things from different angles and develop a brand strategy that resonates with everyone.
In the Define phase, we clearly define the audience segments, key messages targeted to each of them, brand architecture, brand positioning, and value proposition. This ensures that your brand speaks the correct language to the right people.
The Personalisation phase is where we create a visual identity that reflects the brand's essence and personality and differentiates it from the competition. We want your brand to stand out and be easily recognisable. We achieve that by creating a visual identity that is unique and memorable.
Once the visual identity is established, we move on to the Implement phase, where we roll out the new brand across all communication channels, including websites, social media, marketing materials, and signage. This ensures that your brand is consistent and cohesive across all touchpoints.
Finally, we come to the Measure phase, where we monitor the effectiveness of the new brand and make adjustments as needed. We continuously evaluate the brand's impact on the organisation's reputation and bottom line to ensure we achieve our goals.
It's important to remember that a simple cosmetic and aesthetic approach is to be avoided as it would hardly have any impact, even in the short term. At #pageinextremis, we don't believe in shortcuts.

TR25 | Reimagined Covers: Chronicles
Back in February, Crystal Dynamics debuted a special project that aimed to reimagine the box art of the mainline entries in the series. Each one features a different artist and their unique take on the game they were assigned with and is set to be released monthly throughout 2021.
For Tomb Raider V: Chronicles (2000), the team unveiled this intricate art nouveau composition designed by the talented Meagan Lara, an illustrator well known for her use of this particular vintage style. Meagan has done work for various high profile companies from the likes of Marvel, Dark Horse Comics, Valve, Quantum Mechanix, Syfy, Loot Crate, and more, including exclusive designs for pop culture franchises such as Buffy, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Monty Python, among many others.
Below you can find her words on the making of this piece and a download link with it in various sizes so you can customize all of your devices.
“When asked to reimagine the cover for Tomb Raider: Chronicles, I jumped at the chance to illustrate it in the art nouveau style. I felt that the juxtaposition art nouveau provides was perfect for Lara Croft: soft, often feminine subjects against harsher, solid lines; realistic forms against flat shapes and patterns; fine art combined with commercial design.
The opera scene in Chronicles was particularly memorable and lent itself well to the style by showcasing her femininity and resolve, so that is what I chose as the main focus. Inspired in particular by Alphonse Mucha's illustrated commercial advertisements of Sarah Bernhardt, I picked several integral scenes and locations from the game to include as vignettes around the drawing of Lara.
As I like to do in my work, I used many easter eggs and visual references from the game to turn into patterns and design elements to tie the piece together. The God Stones' symbols, Iris, Bestiary, Spear of Destiny and the Philosopher's stone are a few of the more prominent ones that I hope fans of Lara's recognize and enjoy.”
The team has released a neat fan kit with the artwork packed with wallpapers, social assets and even a printable file for those who wish to revamp their classic cases. If you do so, please share them with us on social media by tagging @thecrofttomb and @tombraider in your posts along with #TR25!

PoI S5 rewatch 2021, disc 1
I am rewatching PoI S5 with @mimeparadox! BSOD: A strong episode that is hurt by hindsight, in the baggage it carries in from S4's finale, and the way S4's finale and the rest of S5 don't necessarily hold up. That is, a lot of excellent hooks that are very compelling at the time of watch are never properly followed up on, and so become hollow. In particular, BSOD does an excellent job demonstrating the strengths of Reese as a character...which is all entirely divorced from being Detective Riley. In fact, his worst moments in the episode involve him being a dick to Fusco for no good reason, which seems like an outdated characterization of their dynamic (and is basically in service of keeping Fusco further in the dark for no good reason). So, of course, the show will continue to beat the Riley dead horse and keep him away from the AI plot, instead of letting Reese play to his strengths and demonstrate his love languages as he does in this episode. The other detail that foreshadowed the half-assed plotting to come is how Samaritan tries have anyone believe that sniper rifle bullets could come from a handgun. SNAFU: This episode is very good and is not really hurt by hindsight! Because it's almost like a bottle episode, dealing entirely with team relationships. No Samaritan in the A-plot at all. This demonstrates how Samaritan-as-Big-Bad/The-Machine-as-unimpeachably-benevolent hurt the show's writing, compared to if they had dug in deeper on the complexities of if the team disagreed with The Machine's decisions. The other big standout is that we have a moment of a maverick white male cop busting into an innocent teenage black boy's house, chasing him down with gun drawn into his room. NOT A GOOD LOOK. And Reese is also still a dick to Fusco. Is this a writer turnover thing? Like, their relationship really should have turned a corner in S3. And also, we're supposed to believe that Reese was some sort of elite CIA spy when he's this shit at asset cultivation? Truth Be Told: Worst ep of the season? Very possibly so! Clearly the show is trying to replicate the "spies are fucked up" episodes of S1, such as Foe. But there are way too many ideas, and all of them are half-baked. And it's so damning that the Reese storyline has bupkiss to do with the Harold-Root storyline. In S1, what made those episodes work was that there was always a non-spy foil character to highlight how warped the spy mindset is, and to offer an alternative path. I suppose Iris is meant to be that foil in this ep, but given how badly that whole storyline has been from start, of course it flops at the finish. To not be incessant bitching, good parts! The bathroom fight. The steering wheel. Root braining a guy with a present. Bear's slurping noises. Root installing malware on a laptop because YOLO. Keith David's voice. 6741: Hot take time! Parts are greater than the whole, which is tainted by the fact that I no longer have much emotional investment in the team fighting Samaritan, because now I know that they're not going to ever be good at it. I experienced something similar with SPOP, where the Princess Alliance was so infuriatingly incompetent that I couldn't really give a fuck about the plotting anymore, and just enjoyed the fun filler shenanigans when they happened. So with 6741, the scenes of Sarah getting to go one-on-one acting with each of the other cast members were enjoyable, but I don't learn anything new from this ep the way I always do with my favorite eps of PoI. Hence, this episode actually has quite low rewatch value for me. Shotseeker: I like the case of the week parts. Backed by interesting technical research, and the script does try to touch on themes of "trying to play greater good games with cold systems will trade off against empathy for the individual," which is the thesis of the show. The team is shown to be losing because they, ironically, keep treating the people around them as disposable vs. their bigger fights. They do better when they (Fusco and Root, in this ep) act on their emotional investments. Like BSOD, this episode is tainted by the season arc stuff fizzling out. The crime storyline for the season is so, so bad. Despair narratives are very hard to pull off, and doubly hard to pull off for non-protagonists, and PoI is not going to make it happen. In addition, the attempt to make Samaritan inscrutable is a STRETCH, so it's still just a generic murder-happy Big Bad.

TR25 | Capas Reimaginadas: Chronicles

@peggystormborn I think Iris Barry is the exception for a variety of reasons (imo partially race, partially the committment of the writers to the couple). But Oliver and Felicity did A LOT OF triangles before they committed and some of the writing for them was terrible on the romance front. People like to just remember the endgame, but they forget how terrible the road there was (Laurel, Sarah, Oliver marrying another woman, Oliver having a child with another woman, an entire crossover dedicated to a fantasy wedding between Laurel and Oliver, evil!Oliver being married to Kara). Granted in a lot of ways it was because Felicity wasn’t the original OTP and I think it took Marc Guggenheim a long time to finally accept it (I think he’s one of those writers who deep at heart doesn’t really like romance at all, and just eventually only grudingly accepted it, but I think the earlier seasons feel like there was a lot of latent animosity from the writers towards the storyline).
(and one can debate how Barry/Mirror Iris is something like a triangle, even if it is a triangle made up by writers who desperately want to maintain the “pure” status of an OTP, I mean, as long as you don’t think too hard about the implications of Mirror!Iris [I also think that the fact that Iris and Felicity predominantly don’t have superpowers makes it slightly easier for them to work as a functioning couple])
People thinking that the writers have handled Kara’s Kryptonian relations poorly doesn’t change that if the topic does not interest the writers they are not going to write it (and if they write something really tonedeaf about it, that is usually a sign that they don’t really care about a topic). It’s a very common trait of fanbases to take certain topics more seriously. Criticisms of co-dependency and calls for therapy are very, very common examples of this in a multitude of fandoms.
You have this all over the Supernatural ending, with people saying “Dean was acting suicidal for years, it sends a horrible message that the show ends up with him dying” and “John Winchester was a horrible father, it’s a horrible message that the show ends up with him being in heaven as part of Dean’s personal heaven and the show never doing a story where Dean recognizes that John screwed him up and fully breaks ties with him” and “the brothers were co-dependant, the show getting rid of all the characters who are not them and making the ending exclusively about them is a horrible message”.
I think it’s pretty clear that these things weren’t written because the writers intended to send that message, they just clearly see the characters very differently and many things the fans obsess over they see as just not that great a deal. Fans often latch onto characters and stories because they see part of themselves in them and project their own experiences and their emotions about those experiences into those characters (look no further than Lena’s fans and what they think is most important about her character). Fans also love their characters and want their angst to be explored, while most shows just want to keep the plot going. That’s why you will have amost every fandom clamoring how the show should do a therapy plot for their favorite character. To them that makes sense, they love their favorite character, so them sitting on a couch and talking about their feelings of course is going to sound fascinating. Doesn’t mean that the writers tick that way at all.
Supernatural can show pretty clearly how there can be a fundamental miscommunication between the fans and the creators. Where maybe writers might think that Dean’s dogged loyalty is his most fascinating trait, while fans might think his angsty woobie appeal is his most fascinating trait and his loyalty is boring or just a jumping off point or even actively harmful. Social media and fandom, I think it just has a habit of attracting people who have problems in their real lives and they are likely to project their own problems into these characters, but that does not mean that the writers are anywhere the same headspace (particularly in regards to how abusive or co-dependant a relationship is, I think just like with John Winchester, writers are way more likely to have a more positive view towards relationship and stories like that, because to them, those relationships are something good in their world because they are drivers of drama, providers of dramatic scenes).
And I think history has shown, no matter how annoying it is to the fans, new showrunners just will not be beholden to the themes and messages of previous showrunners. They will pay tribute to whatever part of previous seasons they like, but they are likely going to come in with their own spin, their biases and their own takes of the characters.
(for what it’s worth, I theorize season 4 started out with the plan for a sister season, to explore (via Red Kara and Elseworld and Amnesia) what is Alex without Kara, what is Kara without Alex and they just sort of lost the main plot somewhere in the middle between introducing Nia, introducing Lex and poorly thought out political metaphor)
Right now, what little we know of season 6 makes one hopeful that it could have a significant Alex and thusly sister focused plot, with Alex playing around with being a vigilante and there being rumors of another young sisters episode.
What is interesting about this is that either of Alex most likely developments, Alex becoming a hero in her own right OR Alex finally getting her baby and family provide interesting jumping off points for Kara to reflect on her own life. This does not mean that the writers will actually take this opportunity seriously, but it is at least possible.
Alex has been a physical fighter working with Kara since forever, but her getting her own costume could be a signal that she is getting her own hero identity. Alex being her own heroic person rather than just the no-name who supports Kara ideally should be an interesting change up in their dynamics. Either with Kara cheerleading and supporting Alex they way Alex has always supported her or with Kara realizing that maybe she has to step back a little and let Alex be her own hero and trust her that she can handle things on her own (potentially culminating with Kara leaving the protection of the city and Earth in the hands of Alex).
I could picture Kara having a relationship with William and eventually rejecting him symbolically but I just really wouldn’t expect it to be about Argo. But I could picture a plot where seeing Alex thrive as a hero makes Kara think she has the freedom to kick back and focus on her romantic relationship or focus on being just Kara Danvers for a while (and in the end realizing that that is not enough for her, I just would expect this NOT to be about Kara Zor-El but about Supergirl, Kara realizing that she needs to be Supergirl to be happy even if being Supergirl has made her life more complicated in many ways).
On the other hand, if Alex were to finally get her child wish fulfilled it could a be a good story to explore what the equivalent is for Kara (while with Alex, she has always been protective of Kara, so her having somebody else to raise and be protective over would also provide good emotional dramatic potential).
But it could just as equally be that they parallel Alex being happy with a baby and a girlfriend as their little family with Kara just getting William as the nice unproblematic understanding boyfriend, forming their own family unit albeit without a child. Or it could be Kara just getting gratification of being a supportive and loving aunt. You never know. Supernatural shows that just because the fans are convinced that the show will go one way (Family is about more than blood ties! The show will end with showing how Sam and Dean have evolved beyond “the two of us against the world!” and their family unit now includes Eileen, Castiel and Jack) doesn’t mean that the writers see it the same way.
It’s very interesting in how this reaction mirrors the reaction to the How I Met Your Mother Finale where the writers thought it made sense to circle back to the start and most of the general audience disliked it because they felt the characters had developed beyond the original premise. But it still shows how this particular pattern of thinking is one that writers are very likely to fall into.
Finales often have a way of exposing whether one’s (or even the audience in general) perception of the characters and their relationships and perceived moral takeaways align with the one’s of the writers. I don’t even think that that is something that can just be “fixed” by telling writers “don’t be the Game of Thrones finale, don’t be the HIMYM finale”. If powerful writers just have a certain perception of characters, that’s just how they see them and they can’t just break out of.
I guess one can argue that maybe it’s a sign of poor writing (even if it might be good business sense) if a show supports such a variety of readings till the very end (are we watching a story about co-dependant siblings which should end with them lovingly and supportively letting each other go? or are we watching a show about siblings through thick and thin, more powerful than anything?), but I think in some cases it just arises naturally because of the way fans can project themselves into characters in ways that was not intended by the writers and that can’t fully be controlled by them (and since those projections are heavily influenced by people’s very varied personal experiences you also can’t just please everyone).

Do wish they had done more w/ Scott and Iris or think they had the intention of doing more than just ending it off screen (before it really ever started)
I personally didn’t need more with Scott simply because the boss/employee dynamic was uncomfortable. But it would have been cool to see them actually go on the date and maybe get into a real disagreement about the Flash, wherein Iris could learn that their viewpoints are simply never going to align and that she’s getting heated about the situation precisely because of her feelings for Barry.
That anon HAS to be trolling. As if “ppl from the future falling in love with ppl from the present” has never been explored in fiction lol. Is Sarah Connor from Terminator a pedophile bc she fell in love with Kyle Reese and conceived John? I…
Today I learned that not everyone is okay with time travel romances, lol.
Do these people enjoy Outlander, and Jaime/Clare? Cuz by their logic he’s a couple hundred years older.
Not to mention half the ships on Legends, but it’s fine. People don’t have to enjoy the same ships or tropes. I just draw the line at calling things what they’re not.

Hi Jade! Since u were in the Smallville fandom I would to like know ur thoughts abt this. Do u think Lois reveiced the same amount of hate than Iris receive? bc I was in the SV fandom and ppl really hated Lois during SV days (I'm still bitter) and the same thing happens with Iris. The thing I hate most is that it seems both of them were not popular in SM and it's so frustrating because why this is only happen w my faves? Anyway why do u think some folks hated/hate those female leads so much? 😭
This is a great question!
In many ways...yes. They do get similar hate. Obviously, Iris gets the added layer of racism, which Lois didn’t have. That extra layer can’t be understated or underestimated. But, yes, that aside...I think they get a lot of similar hate. Why is that?
In part, it’s because they’re the endgame couple of the show. In any show that has cultivated more than one ship, there’s going to be hate against the ship - and typically the woman in the ship - that “wins.” Only one ship can be endgame (at least as long as heroes remain monogamous), and that means the rest just don’t come to pass. But there is more to the hate Iris and Lois get, I think. And why is that?
Honestly...it’s because they’re so awesome. That’s only semi-facetious.
Look. Here’s the thing about both Clois and Westallen. They’re not like other love stories.
Think about other love stories. For example, Supergirl. Now, whether you ship Kara with James or with Mon-El or with Lena or with Brainiac or with literally almost anybody else...well, the probability that those ships will be endgame may differ, but the possibility that any one of could be endgame exists. If not on this show then the one after that or the one after that.
Supergirl just doesn’t have an iconic love story that is integral to the mythos. She may have a love story people like more than others, but you could tell her story with other love interests and her basic story as a person and as a hero doesn’t fundamentally change. It’s like Batman. Some people really love his story with Catwoman. But can you tell his story without ever mentioning Catwoman? Sure, if you want.
This is also why I roll my eyes when people say “Green Arrow changed plans by pursuing Olicity instead of Lauriver so Flash can, too!” Green Arrow is different from Flash (and from Superman). Black Canary has been a part of his mythos for a long time, but it’s also been very different in how it’s been a part of his mythos. At times, they end up together. At times, they end up divorced. You could have a story where they’re just coworkers on the League or a story where they’ve never met at all. And would that story miss out on some moments or dynamics that BC/GA fans enjoy? Absolutely. But if you removed BC from GA’s story, would that fundamentally change who GA is as a character (or vice versa) or his story? Nope.
So in a show like Arrow, could Felicity be his endgame ship? Or Huntress? Or Shado? Or Sarah? Sure. Could his endgame be him alone, and still preserve his story, who he is, and the greater mythos? Sure.
That’s just not true of Lois Lane or Iris West. They aren’t just a part of they mythos, removable/replaceable without fundamentally changing the story or the heroes’ characters. They’re an integral part of those stories. Remove Lois Lane’s connection to Superman and what it is that draws him to her and her to him, and that changes his character. She has a part in his story that other characters - like WW - simply couldn’t fill.
And with Iris...well, you remove her, and you’ve not just taken a big part of Barry’s story away. You’re also removing the Tornado Twins and Wally West. That’s a pretty significant change and a big loss to the mythos.
So, outside of everything else - the horrific racism Iris West faces on Flash, the hate both characters would get simply for being endgame - you have the fact that their entry into the story is inevitable, and the minute that either of them enter the story, the writing is on the wall for how it’s going to end. Clark and Lana were the ship of the show for Smallville, but everybody knew, from the moment Lois met Clark in that field, how the story was going to end. Maybe it would happen in four seasons or maybe it would happen four episodes from the end of the series, but it would happen.
Hell, everybody knew that was his endgame even before she came. Even if she never showed up. The showrunners never hid the fact that their intention was to end the series at the beginning of the mythos we all know - Daily Planet, Lois Lane, and all.
Before they come in, there’s a chance that another ship might not be ultimate endgame, but they could be endgame for the series, at least. Perhaps those ships would happen, but that would be in an unshown future that other shippers could ignore, if they choose. But for the purposes of the show, that last shot could be Lana and Clark kissing on a hilltop - or crying on a hilltop - and maybe there’s a hint that he’s going to end up with Lois in the future, but that hint can be easily ignored.
But the second Lois joined the show, the showrunners decided they were never going to have him with Chloe. It certainly wouldn’t be endgame. Those fans’ hopes that Clark would eventually move on from Lana and end up with Chloe? Not going to happen. He would move on from Lana. But even when he did, Chloe wouldn’t be his forever, his endgame, because as they said, “It was only a matter of time until...Lois.”
Before Barry fell in love with Iris, before he met her, there could be a show where Barry had his own version of a Clana ship - a ship that the audience knows is fated to end one day but could actually last the duration of the show. Until enter Iris in the last season or the last episode or even just enter a line that he’s going to meet Iris, it’ll just be after the final credits roll.
But from the moment Barry meets Iris, there’s a clock ticking. The moment he realizes he’s in love with her, that clock is at five minutes to midnight. Because from the moment he falls in love with her - and the second she falls in love with him in return - that love story is written. You can’t then have Barry break up with Iris to date someone else, just like the second the love story between Clark and Lois becomes official, you can’t have him deciding to go give Chloe a shot. This is his endgame ship. It’s so important to his mythos that it’s always going to be. And the second those ships become canon in the story, that’s it for any other potential ship that any other shippers wanted.
So Lois and Iris get a massive amount of hate because they’re always going to be endgame. Other series - even series based off pre-existing canon - could and might play around with ships, and it may not be probable that any one of those ships could be endgame, but it’s possible. From the moment Iris and Lois enter their respective stories, however, the writing is on the wall for other shippers. They might get a few episodes or a few seasons of their ship, but endgame is right there in front of them, and it's going to be Westallen/Clois.
Also? Even if the shows ever pursued another ship before the introduction of Lois and Iris? Even if that ship lasted the duration of the show? No other character would ever be able to replace who Lois and Iris are in the mythos. No other character would ever take their place. They could do another ship, but that ship would never be as important to these stories as Clois/Westallen.
Really, we’re quite fortunate in our ships. Our faves may get way more hate than they deserve, but to love women who are so absolutely fundamental to their stories? Absolutely worth it.
