How do mutants in the Facility live?
Patreon Loredump. August 2023
One of the most frequent types of questions I get are about life in the Facility. So it seems like a good topic to start my loredumping series with!Â
Apologies in advance for all the photo examples, I hope they work fine for getting the vibes across.
Overview
The facility dome is visible in the distance.
The facility in general â or, as itâs officially known, the Zh. I. Alferov National Institute of Anomalous Research â is a large structure located on the border of the Zone. Its most notable feature is the massive dome surrounded by an outside wall.
The wall. In real life, the famous building of ĐĐĐŠĐĐĐą.
The latter is a building in itself, containing offices, lecture halls, resting and dining quarters for researchers, as well as minor labs. All entrances are supervised, though not totally closed off to the public. Excursions, official meetings, TV reports â all of those happen within the wall.
But you will not find any mutants here. As you may have already guessed, all the major laboratories, anomalous artefacts, and, of course, mutants are housed in the dome. The entrances to the dome are monitored and equipped with anomaly scanners, allowing only authorised personnel and mutants to travel between its sectors.
Mutants cannot traverse the facility unsupervised.
What is the mutant classification system?
Depending on their anomalous characteristics, cooperability and method of containment, mutants are sorted into types and numbered groups. Individual mutant numbers usually look like XT000-000.
Letâs use Dmitry as an example.
Dimaâs serial number is DT001-319.
The type constitutes the first part of the mutantâs number. Dimaâs mutation is Directional Type, hence the letters DT at the start (for the record, KT stands for Kernel Type).
Next we have the 00X number. Mutants are assigned a 001, 002, 003 or 004 class depending on the potency and containability of their mutation â kinda like SCPs, yeah. Dima has a very powerful mutation he has good control over, plus he is sound of mind, making him suitable for 001 containment.
The last three digits are the overall number of the mutant within their type. So if Dimaâs are 319, the facility has had 318 directional-type mutants on record prior to his arrival. This does not mean they were as powerful or had the same level of control over their telekinesis, just that they possessed a similar mutation to some extent.
How do different mutant classes live?
001
001 quarters example. Not too different from a hospital or sanatorium
Subjects ranked as 001 are extremely powerful, have good control over their powers and are, most importantly, docile. Since their mutations are very potent and difficult to forcefully contain, the go-to approach is making them not want to leave.
001s spend most (if not all) of their conscious lives surrounded by doctors. The latter foster a particular mindset in their subjects, where the world outside is presented as a place that is unanimously hostile to mutants. This is done by means of propaganda, reminders about their familyâs supposed mistreatment and, in case a mutant has some favourable recollections of their childhood, gaslighting. Additionally, subjects are never left alone with each other.
001s get very luxurious treatment by facility's standards, with much bigger, more comfortable rooms than other mutant types. They're even allowed to have gaming consoles, TVs with VHS and video players, and their own bookshelves. Each mutant has their own separate room, which is kept under constant camera surveillance with the toilet being the only blind spot.
Special folders are issued to 001s before experiments with lower-ranked mutants.
Experiments held on 001s are relatively humane so as not to discourage them from staying at the facility. They do undergo daily checkups mostly designed to monitor their mental state. 001s are also active participants in experimentation on lower-ranked mutants, who they are taught and encouraged to treat as lesser beings.
001s are a high-risk investment, so their numbers are far smaller than those of 002 and 003-class mutants. Additionally, because of the potential danger they present, the institute is quick to dispose of 001 subjects by either termination or reclassification to 004. Though, if a 001 manages to stay cooperative long-term, they can become a very valuable asset for the facility.
002 and 003
002 and 003 quarters example. Though, theyâre typically not as well-kept
002 and 003 mutant classes can be grouped together, since their treatment is largely the same. Both of these typesâ mutations are easy to forcibly contain. The difference is their danger levels. 003s require close monitoring to not be harmful to others, while 002s are borderline harmless. Both types are characterised by general cooperability.
002s live in wards for 2 to 4 people, while 003s are more commonly placed in single-person wards to prevent accidents. A standard room includes a bed, a desk and a small bathroom (multiple beds and two desks in bigger wards).
KT got to take a dinosaur plushie to her room for good behaviour.
Mutants are allowed to borrow books from the library, as well as get drawing and writing materials. If they behave well, they can get a toy or even be lent a handheld console for a few days.Â
002s and 003s have breakfasts, lunches and dinners together, and can spend some time in the playroom with other mutants (thatâs also where they can play computer games and watch TV) â all under very strict surveillance, of course.
In some ways, their treatment is much less cruel than that of the elite 001 subjects.
KT before the DT experiment.
Though, not when it comes to experiments. 002s and 003s are very common, and are thus treated as disposable material in a scientific sense. The people holding experiments on them are a lot less concerned with minimising the subjectâs pain or discomfort. Consequently, itâs not uncommon for mutants of these classes to sustain serious injuries or die as a result of experimentation.
That said, 002s have the highest likelihood of getting released from the facility, given they meet the conditions for it (more on that below).
004
004 quarters example. Basically a prison bunker
004 is a special category reserved for powerful mutants that refuse or physically cannot cooperate. This number can also be issued as a temporary or permanent punishment to misbehaving mutants. The 004 quarters are located underground and have the highest level of security, acting as a sort of bunker for the most dangerous subjects the facility has.
004 rooms are even more barebones than those of 002 and 003s. They have no access to entertainment (unless it is somehow required to contain their mutation) and cannot leave their room under any circumstances. They are more weapons than test subjects.
Do mutants receive education?
All mutants from class 003 and above receive basic education, learning to read, write and count. They additionally get curated history and sociology lessons. Some mutants, namely 001s, attend mandatory classes in certain disciplines to better apply their mutation. For example, Dmitry studied anatomy to know the precise positioning of internal organs.
Mutants are also free to study whatever sciences interest them in their free time by asking for educational materials at the library. Needless to say, most kids arenât too interested in that, and are very uneducated compared to their outside peers.
Is there censorship in the facility?
All the media mutants are exposed to at the facility is strictly controlled.
6 y.o. Dima and his politically correct PSP.
The only movies, cartoons, comics, books and games allowed are those that either don't feature the Zone or mutants at all, those that show the discrimination mutants face outside, or those that are very obvious anti-mutant propaganda.
In essence, there are no positive depictions of human-to-mutant interaction, aside from ones between mutants and noble scientists. And, of course, nothing that goes against the general government ideology.
Can mutants be released from the facility?
It is generally assumed that mutants that go into the dome do not come out.
While they are largely dehumanised, the facility is still publicly presented as a sort of scientific sanatorium and hospice for those that cannot safely exist in society. Releasing mutants that know the truth behind the instituteâs experiments into the wild is simply of no benefit to the government. So the majority are terminated once their scientific potential is exhausted or if they become too expensive to contain. As a result, few mutants live to adulthood.
Though, there are exceptions to the rule. Occasionally, mutants deemed non-hazardous can be released back into society. This is applicable to mutants that have not experienced significant mistreatment from the facility, lack the ability to talk about their experiences and optimally have been brainwashed by an appropriate 001 subject.
Have other mutants before DT and KT ever escaped?
The funny thing is, escapes arenât a particularly rare occurrence.
Dmitry and Katyaâs escape in KTâs Official Guide to Coolness.
Despite getting a lot of funding, the facility itself is very disorganised. Most of the money is blatantly pocketed by the higher-ups, so a lot of its structures and equipment are subpar â this includes its outdated safety systems. To top it all off, the security staff isnât especially well-paid, so their diligence is highly questionable.
With all that piling up, there are around 3 cases of low-level escapes every year. Because of tight budgets and plenty of work to do as is, these escapes are generally brushed under the rug. The institute still keeps tabs on the escapees in case they happen to show up on the radar, but it rarely organises active searches or alerts the public for that matter.
DT and KTâs escape stood out because it was anything but low-level, and pretty bombastic at that. But even that didnât warrant a public announcement for fear of panic and reputational damage. So if youâre an 003 mutant looking for an opportunity to sneak out⊠Hell, man, just go for it.
Wrap-up
Thatâs about all I can say about mutantsâ life in the research centre, scratch some small factoids here and there. I tried to answer the most common questions regarding the topic, so I hope your curiosity was satisfied!

âYou know heâs going to say no right?â Remus said, watching you as you pulled the pie from the oven and placed it on counter top. James looked up from where he was lounging on the sofa, laughing as you scowled.
âYou donât know that,â you countered, moving to grab the potatoes that were near spilling over.
âI know Padfoot,â Remus said, placing his book down.Â
âWe all know Padfoot Moony,â James said rolling his eyes before he clambered out of his seat and came towards you, his hand dancing along your waist as he watched you cook.
âExactly,â you said, âand I know that he can be persuaded.â
âWhat by a good meal,â Remus said with a raised eyebrow, coming towards you too, resting his elbows on the counter as he eyed the pair of you.Â
âBy a good meal and dessert,â you mused. James chuckled, âshe might have a point there.â
âAll Iâm saying is donât get your hopes up,â Remus said softly watching as your face fell in a frown, not relieved by James touch as he kissed your temple.Â
âMoonys right sweetheart,â James said softly. You looked at him, worried that the hopes youâd pinned on this mightâve been in vain.
âItâll be fine,â you said unsure who you were trying to convince, âIâll make a good case for it you know me.â
The boys shared a look as you busied yourself obliviously thinking over the game plan as you finished dinner. You were just finishing up dolloping mash potatoes onto each of their plates when the fire in the living room glowed green, Sirius stepping out not a moment later.Â
âHey,â he said, shrugging his leather jacket off and coming towards you, placing a kiss on your temple as he said, âsomething smells good.â
âI made your favourite,â you said, gesturing to the steak and ale pie on the counter top, âpop it on the table will you. Dinner will only be a minute.â
âHow about that for service eh Pads?â James ribbed, taking his seat at the table as did Remus with Sirius joining a moment later, placing the pie in the centre.Â
âCanât complain,â he mused as you placed their plates down, dropping into a seat yourself as Remus started to dish out the pie youâd made.Â
It was quite the squeeze, your tiny kitchen feeling even tinier with the four of you around the table, but you loved it like this. It hadnât been the plan of course; James and Sirius had moved in once leaving school and as your relationship developed you and Remus had sort of never left but you wouldnât trade it. Even if it meant you had to run your wants and needs by everyone you loved, something you were building up to ask about but as Sirius looked at you your nerve went and instead you said âso how was work?â
âFine,â Sirius said, âgot a good case today.â
âYeah?â you asked.
âYeah apparently thereâs been quite a few dragon eggs smuggled into the country. Donât know where from yet of course but should be interesting.â
âThat is interesting,â you said, trying to figure out how to steer the conversation back around.
âWhat about you?â Sirius asked, taking a bit of pie.Â
âOh you know not much,â you shrugged, âgot the flat tidy.â
âJust you?â Sirius said looking at James who hadnât been paying attention until then but glared at the inference.Â
âItâs my day off,â James protested.Â
âYour day to be a lazy git,â Sirius teased and though you knew he was joking there was an edge to it that you frowned at especially when James pretended to shrug it off. It was funny to you how your roles within this little thing could be defined so quickly. How even though Sirius had no more a claim over you than the others he was still so certain to make sure you werenât being taken advantage of, the one you turned to when you needed help. How James was your relief, the one who kept your spirits up, who made you laugh even if he couldnât make a bed or pick up a pair of socks to save his life. And Remus was the one you shared your worries with. The one who made you feel heard and seen in a house full of boys. Â
âRem helped when he got back,â you said reassuringly.Â
âSee,â James said,â besides I thought you wanted practice looking after something Iâm just giving you opportunity.â
âWhy would she want that?â Sirius asked confused.Â
âNo reason,â you said far too quickly to ever be casual. Youâd been gearing up to ask but seeing the conversation teetering on a row youâd decided to postpone until James opened his big mouth. Siriusâ eyes narrowed.
âWhat is it?â he asked.
âNothing,â you lied, âI mean I donât know what heâs on about.â
âSweetheart,â Sirius said, his voice low and daring. You looked to James and Remus to find them interested in their meals, no help to you even as Sirius said, âalright whatâs going on?â
âWell,â you said nervously, âI wanted to ask you something.â
âWhy whatâs wrong?â Sirius asked worriedly.
âNothing bad,â you said placing your hand on his reassuringly.
âJesus mate lighten up,â James teased. Sirius rolled his eyes but elected to ignore him, his gaze falling on you as he said, âwhat is it love?â
âItâs just well Iâve been thinking,â you said.
âWhat about?â Sirius asked.
âWell about us,â you said bashfully, âabout this little thing weâve got going on.â
âRight,â Sirius said dubiously.
âAnd I was just thinking that it might be nice if we expanded a little,â you said meekly.
âExpanded?â he asked, thoughts whizzing visibly behind his eyes.Â
âYeah,â you said.Â
âLike someone else?â Sirius asked glancing at James and Remus before back at you.Â
âNo, no of course not. I donât want anyone else but you lot you know that,â you said, squeezing his hand. That appeared to trigger something as he said, âyouâre pregnant?â
âWhat?â you and James baulked, with Remus inhaling a piece of broccoli at the same time which made him cough and splutter as you protested, âno of course not!â
âWell what else could it be?â Sirius protested, glancing at Remus to make sure he was okay before his eyes went back to you.
âNot that Jesus,â James huffed, thumping a still watery eyed Remus on the back to help dislodge the issue.Â
âWell excuse me for jumping to conclusions when youâre obviously all in on whatever this is,â Sirius said irritably, gesturing between the three of you.
âThatâs cos we wonât say no,â James countered.
âI never said yes,â Remus said, his voice still weak as he glugged down a drink of water.
âYes to?â Sirius asked.
âI want a kitten,â you said quickly realising there was no point beating around the bush anymore given the anarchy that had already been caused.Â
âWhat?â Sirius asked as if he hadnât heard you.
âA kitten,â you reiterated, âI was thinking about it and donât you think a little-â
âNo,â Sirius said flatly.
âBut-â you protested but he waved you off stating, âyou know I hate cats.â
âYou donât know that,â you said.
âYes I do,â he said firmly.
âHow do you know?â you pressed, âI mean you might do.â
âI donât,â Sirius said, his tone challenging you not to talk back to him. As if this was the end of the discussion, but you werenât done.
âYou donât know that you just think you do because-â
âHeâs a dog?â James finished.
âBecause youâve never been around them!â you corrected, âbut I think itâll be really good-â
âWhat to have it scratching everything up and shitting in a box in the corner?â Sirius scoffed.
âWe can let it go outside,â you offered.
âIn the middle of a city yeah right,â he said shaking his head.Â
âOh Pads please,â you begged.
âI said no,â Sirius said firmly.
âOh go on mate,â James sighed. Sirius glowered at him, as he started, âjust because youâre bendable to whatever she wants-â
âBecause I want her to be happy,â James challenged.
âBecause you like pissing me off and being her favourite,â Sirius said making James scowl.Â
âPads please,â you pleaded.Â
âI said no,â he said pulling his hand out from under yours as he started to eat again. Irritated you looked away from him, looking to Remus whoâs remained quiet even though he had been watching.
âPlease Rem?â you asked.
âI donât know love,â he said.
âCome on majority rules. James said yes-â
âJames would say yes to anything that would get your top off,â Sirius muttered.
âAnd you wouldnât?â James scoffed; Siriusâ digs seemingly having gone too far to be just light hearted teasing. A sentiment that was confirmed as Remus, the nominated peacemaker, said, âlads stop it.â
Unfortunately he hadnât said anything about you and so you looked to Sirius and challenged him, âokay what about a baby then?â
âWhat?â Sirius gawped.
âSee kitten isnât as mad as that,â you challenged.
âSheâs got a point,â James said, making you smile smugly that you still had him on side.
âShe doesnât have any point sheâs being ridiculous!â Sirius snapped.
âIâm being ridiculous? Youâre the one who wonât even hear me out I mean did you even wonder why I want one?â you challenged. As the boys looked at you silently you continued, âI want a kitten because I want something for me. Something thatâs just mine that I donât have to share with anyone. Now Iâm not saying I hate what we have going I love you all you know that. I just like our little home; I think we make it really lovely and you take such good care of me I just want something to love besides you three.â
All three of them remained silent, staring at you. When none of them spoke the weight of your words started hitting you, your vulnerability and longing now feeling more like a weakness rather than strength, as if you were in the middle of the ocean surrounded by three sharks.Â
âFine,â you huffed as your embarrassment caught the better of you, slamming your fork down and standing up.
âOh come on donât get in a strop,â Sirius scoffed, throwing his own utensils down.
âBabe come on,â James said tugging at your sleeve though you yanked it from his grip.
âPads is right letâs not fall out over something silly,â Remus said, and though his was the nicest tone of the three of them it was that which made you see red.
âOh so Iâm being silly now?â you snapped, âwhen you wonât even contemplate doing something a little out of your comfort zone.âÂ
âYou know I donât like them,â Sirius reasoned weakly.
âYeah youâve made that clear I just thought Iâd mean enough to try something you donât like,â you said curtly, throwing him a glare as you added, âI mean havenât we all gone out of our comfort zone.â
âThatâs not the same,â Sirius scoffed.
âIsnât it?â you challenged.
âYou know it isnât,â he replied darkly.Â
âFeels like itâs one rule for the boys one for me,â you said firmly.Â
âBabe you itâs not like that you know itâs not,â James said softly. Sirius however didnât seem to be caving, his jaw clenched at the accusation.Â
âLook,â he started.
âYou know what forget it,â you snapped, pulling away from the table and slamming your chair under it no doubt knocking a couple of knees as you did not that anyone complained. In fact the other boys looked worried, Remus especially as he said, âarenât you going to eat your dinner?â
âIâm not hungry,â you lied, storming off to your bedroom, the door slamming behind you.
As James and Remus looked towards Sirius they found him on his feet too, grabbing his coat from where heâd hung it and shrugging it on.Â
âMate come on,â Remus grumbled. Sirius ignored him, heading to the fireplace.
âWhere are you going?â James asked, turning so that he could see him.
âOut,â Sirius said and before they could protest he disappeared through green flame.Â
â”â”â”
âI still donât think theyâre good together,â James said, his voice rumbling against your belly where his head was resting, your fingers running through his messy locks soothingly.
âI donât mind them,â you said, trying not to giggle and tease him about the fact heâd maintained he had no interest in watching the soap you were currently watching.
âHmm,â he muttered neither in agreement nor rebuttal.Â
Before you could say anything though the door clicked open, making him lift his head from your stomach, and Sirius appeared in the doorway. Though James had been on your side, telling you how he agreed Sirius was being unreasonable he straightened up, no doubt aiming to be peacemaker as he said, âhey mate.â
âHey,â Sirius said hesitantly, frowning as you refused to look in his direction. Nevertheless he cleared his throat and continued, âcan I borrow you for a minute?â
âUh yeah sure,â James said scrambling off you though as Sirius threw him a look James said, âoh you donât mean me.â
You glanced their way for a fraction of a second before turning your attention back to the screen, thankful neither of them saw it. Sirius sighed and leant on the door frame, âare you still not talking to me?â
âAre you still being selfish?â you replied, your eyes still ahead, arms folded across your chest.
âGuys,â James sighed.
âNo actually,â Sirius said cutting him off and earning a scoff from you. With a sigh he walked forward towards the bed, sitting down on the edge of it as he said, âwould you just come into the living room? Please?â
You watched him for a moment, his grey eyes pleading with you in a way that made your heart thump. It was enough to make you let your guard down as you sighed and said, âfine.âÂ
He climbed up before you heading to the door with you and James following him out into the living room. You were still miffed at him but more annoyed at yourself for being so malleable when it came to any of them playing on your heart strings.Â
âNow I understand if you donât like it but there wasnât much I could do at this time of night,â Sirius said, turning to face you. Your gaze skimmed the living room, clocking Remus who was sitting on the couch but nothing that gave you any clues as to what he was talking about. As he watched you his face grew nervous.
âWell?â he asked, still you werenât sure but before you could ask him what the hell he was on about you heard a little mewling chirp. Your eyes immediately flew in the direction of the noise where you found a tiny kitten trotting around on Remusâ lap, tiny claws clinging from his jumper as it threw itself about.
âOh my god!â you squealed, racing forward to scoop the tiny little thing off of Remusâ lap. It wriggled about in your arms as you fawned over it.
âHi sweetheart, oh my god, hi, hi,â you cooed, cuddling it to you, âoh my god arenât you cute!â
âItâs a good job he is otherwise heâd be long gone given how many times heâs scratched me on the way over here,â Sirius grumbled, making you look up from your fit of fawning.
âAw sweetie do you not like the big doggy,â you teased, earning a mew from the tiny black kitten in your arms.Â
âAnd yet heâs been awful fond of the big bad wolf,â Sirius joked earning a chuckle from you all. You smiled and decanted the kitten into Remusâ arms so that you could go to him, your arms wrapping around his neck as he held you to him, a smirk playing on his lips.  That was also the beauty of your relationship, whenever you did argue or disagree about something it never lasted long.
âHi,â he said, moving a strand of hair from your face.
âHi,â you replied.
âDid I do alright?â he asked hesitantly.
âSirius this is amazing,â you whispered, âthank you so much.â
âYeah well itâs good to get out your comfort zone I suppose,â he shrugged.Â
âYou might be right,â you said, leaning in to kiss him tenderly, âare you sure we just want one?â
âDonât push it,â he mumbled into your lips.Â

Summer of Bad Batch 2024 | Week 2 | Prompt: Comfort Zone
Rated: G | Words: 2109
Summary:
âDid you know,â Crosshair says, conversationally, âthat Hunter sleeps with his eyes open?â
A prank does not go as planned.
âDid you know,â Crosshair says, conversationally, âthat Hunter sleeps with his eyes open?â
Echo huffs, âThatâs impossible.â
âItâs part of his enhancement,â Crosshair says.
The sniper is lounging against the wall with the port Echo is scomped into, idly gnawing on a toothpick with his helmet tucked under his arm, rifle hanging uselessly in his other hand. Echo casts him a vexed glance. âShouldnât you be covering my six?
âI am.â
âWith your helmet on? And your weapon ready?âÂ
âItâs an abandoned outpost,â Crosshair scoffs. âThereâs nothing here.âÂ
âWell, then, can you at least stop distracting me? Iâm trying to concentrate.âÂ
Crosshair snorts. âIâm giving you vital information about our squadâs dynamics.âÂ
âSure you are,â Echo grumbles.Â
âIf you donât believe me, ask Tech. Heâll tell you.âÂ
âOr maybe Iâll ask Wrecker.âÂ
âSure.âÂ
Echo twists to look up at Crosshair. âYouâre being serious? Hunter sleeps with his eyes open?âÂ
âItâs unsettling, but itâs true,â Crosshair says, shrugging. âBut whatever you do, donât tell Hunter you know. Heâs very self conscious about it.âÂ
Echo narrows his eyes, watching for any twitch of a tell in Crosshairâs features. Crosshair stares back, unflinching, which means nothing. Of the Batch, he seems to be the most apt at lying. Turning back to his task, Echo says, âIâll believe it when I see it.âÂ
âFine by me,â Crosshair says with a shrug.Â
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
âEcho told me something interesting,â Crosshair says, trailing after Hunter as they leave their meeting with command.Â
Hunter isnât paying attention, reading over their new mission parameters before Tech gets ahold of them. âYeah?â he asks, absently.Â
âHe said he sleeps with his eyes open.âÂ
âUh, huh.âÂ
âThatâs it? Did you even hear what I said?âÂ
The ire in Crosshairâs tone makes Hunter look back at him. âWhat?â
Crosshair sighs. âI said, Echo told me something interesting.â
Hunter quirks an eyebrow. âOkay?â
âHe said that he sleeps with his eyes open.âÂ
Hunter laughs. âWhat does that mean?âÂ
âIt means he literally sleeps with his eyes open. Something to do with his cybernetics.âÂ
âHeâs pulling your leg, Cross.âÂ
âIâve seen it.âÂ
Now Hunter stops, turning to look at Crosshair dubiously. âYouâve seen Echo sleep with his eyes open.âÂ
âSeveral times.â Â
Hunter considers this a moment, then regards Crosshair with a disconcerted expression. âYou know, itâs kinda creepy that you watch Echo while he sleeps.âÂ
âI donât watch him sleep,â Crosshair sputters.Â
âThatâs kind of what you just said.âÂ
Crosshair rolls his eyes and walks away, missing Hunterâs grin of triumph. It isnât hard to annoy the sniperâŠbut embarrassing him was a special kind of achievement.Â
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
Echo almost asks Tech about Hunter, then he almost asks Wrecker. The issue is that if he caves to the surmounting curiosity, and it turns out this is some sort of prankâŠeveryone will know he fell for it and heâll look like a gullible dolt. Then again, Crosshair had seemed genuine. It would be a weird thing to lie about. What would he gain from it? (Besides the obvious prize of making Echo appear idiotic.) In the end, Echo decides that heâll just have to verify the intel for himself, do some recon. How hard can it be to catch Hunter asleep and justâŠinvestigate.
Apparently, absolutely kriffing impossible.Â
For whatever reason (further piquing Echoâs interest), Hunter always sleeps with his back to the room. To investigate would mean to lean precariously over the hyper sensitive clone. Like thatâs gonna happen with Echoâs prosthetics and cybernetics whirring and screaming his location at all times.Â
A standard week later, Echo still doesnât know if Hunter sleeps with his eyes open, but he is almost positive the man has eyes in the back of his head.Â
A rare stint on Kamino finds Echo sitting at the table, facing Hunterâs bunk, waiting and hoping that the clone tucked inside turns over in his sleep and finally puts this rumor to restâŠso to speak.Â
Abruptly, Hunter rolls over and pins Echo with a bleary glare. âWhat are you doing?â he growls, voice rough with sleep.Â
Echo stammers, holding up a dark data pad as frail evidence. âReading?â An internal smack to the forehead as he wonders why he posed his answer as a question. Â
âYouâve been watching me sleep. Why?âÂ
âIâm not,â Echo protests.Â
âYou are,â Hunter insists.Â
Echo squirms under the scrutiny, face aflame with embarrassment. âJust something Crosshair saidâŠI was trying to figure out if it was true.âÂ
Hunter rolls his eyes. âDid he tell you I sleep with my eyes open?âÂ
Echo gapes. This can go one of two very different ways. Either Hunter admits that itâs true, or he tells Echo that heâs an idiot for believing a syllable out of the sniperâs mouth. Echo is not mentally prepared for either scenario.Â
âWell, itâs not true,â Hunter deadpans. âAlthough, Cross told me that you told him that you sleep with your eyes open because of something to do with your cybernetics.â
Echo frowns. âDid you believe him?â
Hunter grins, flopping over onto his back and covering his eyes with the crook of one arm. âNo, because Iâm not an idiot.âÂ
âHe said it had to do with your enhancement,â Echo defends himself, but that just makes Hunter laugh. Â
âAnd you just believed him?â Hunter asks, still chuckling.Â
Echo doesnât want to dignify the obviously rhetorical question with a response, so he awakens his data pad with an irritable tap, and begins to sort through meaningless tabs hoping that Hunter will just drop it, and that he wonât tell Crosshair about any of it.Â
âAh, donât feel bad, Echo,â Hunter says, still hiding half his face under his arm. âCross messing with you means he likes you. Youâre officially part of the squad. Getting harrassed by Crosshair is practically a right of passage.â
âDoes it ever stop?â Echo mutters.Â
Of course Hunter hears him. âNo, but you get used to it.âÂ
Echo swears under his breath. âGoody.âÂ
A few minutes pass and Echo thinks that Hunter has fallen back asleep; however, the sergeant lifts his arm. âI have an idea to get him backâŠif youâre interested.â
Oh, Echo is very interested.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
âYou were right about Echo,â Hunter says, walking alongside Crosshair.Â
Crosshair is pushing a cart of supplies from the armory. This is usually a task completed by Wrecker and Crosshair; however, Hunter had volunteered to go when Wrecker was occupied helping Tech with inventory countsâŠa task Hunter usually did with Tech.Â
âWhat are you talking about?â Crosshair asks.Â
Hunter glances around and lowers his voice. âAbout him sleeping with his eyes open.âÂ
Crosshair carefully keeps his expression from twitching into a look of surprise. âOf course I was right. Why would I lie about something like that?âÂ
âTo make me a kriffing creeper like you,â Hunter says, bumping his shoulder into Crosshair.Â
Crosshair rolls his eyes, remembering how this conversation went a few weeks ago. âI donât watch him sleep!âÂ
âFine, you donâtâŠbut you were right! I couldnât believe it. I asked Tech about it, and he said it is one of the side effects of his internal cybernetics. Sometimes Echo forgets to close his eyes if he falls asleep too fast.âÂ
That actually kind of made sense. Crosshair smirks. âYouâre telling me this like I didnât already know.âÂ
âIâm just saying, Iâm sorry for doubting you,â Hunter says humbly. âItâs actually a good thing you told me. When I talked to Tech, he said that it is important that we close Echoâs eyes for him if he falls asleep with them open. They dry out and are painful once he wakes up.âÂ
Crosshair hums. He isnât sure what he thinks of that. Maybe Echo should learn to fall asleep slower if drying his eyes out is that huge of a problem.Â
Hunter claps Crosshairâs shoulder soundly. âThank you for looking out for our squadmate. I know itâs been an adjustment incorporating Echo into the squad, but when we all put in the effort, it will be an even more seamless transition.âÂ
âSure,â Crosshair mutters, feeling uncomfortable under the glowing praise. Hunter isnât usually so flowery, and Echoâs adapting to the dynamics of Clone Force 99 hasnât been that difficult. A few missteps here and there, but overall, the reg seemed able to keep up.Â
Crosshair shrugs off the awkwardness of the situation and hopes he is never the one who sees that Echo has fallen asleep with his eyes open.
<<>><<>><<>><<>><<>><<>>
He isnât so lucky.Â
A standard week later, a mission forces them to travel twelve hours in hyperspace. Once the mission parameters have been established, the Batch disperse to do their own tasks. Echo announces that he is exhausted and is going to take a nap. He tells his new brothers that he does not want to be disturbed unless it is a matter of life or death. Then, he stretches out on the lower bunk, turns his back to the room, and is softly snoring a few minutes later.Â
Crosshair is doing what he usually does on a long space journey: taking apart his entire rifle and putting it back together after polishing each individual piece. He is nearly done putting the rifle back together when Echo rolls over with a loud sigh. Crosshair glances up and freezes mid attaching one rifle piece to another.Â
Echo is staring at him, unblinking. Well. Not at him, more like, through him. Itâs terrifying.Â
Crosshair glances at the cockpit where Tech, Hunter and Wrecker are. If he could get one of them to come back here, maybe theyâd see Echoâs predicament and handle it themselves, Crosshair could claim not to have noticed.Â
Another option is to wake Echo up. Crosshair isnât scared of Echo, not even intimidated; however, putting an ARC on the warpath for disturbing his sleep seems like an unwise decision if Crosshair doesnât want to face retaliation.Â
The third option, the option Crosshair is loath to even consider, is to get up and close Echoâs eyes himself. Knowing there is no one around to hear him, Crosshair breathes out a whine, dropping his head back against the wall and sagging his shoulders. He really, really does not want to do this.Â
Echo continues to stare.Â
Unseeing. Unblinking.Â
Just staring, staring right through Crosshair.Â
With another hissed sound of disdain, Crosshair puts aside his rifle pieces and stands up. How does one even close someoneâs eyes? You just prise their eyelids down? Wonât that wake them up? These questions plague Crosshairâs mind as he creeps forward, trying not to make eye contact with the sleeping ARC. Itâs just so weirdâŠ
He stands in front of the bunk, sighs again, and kneels down, crouched on his heels. He reaches up slowly, hating every painful second of this.Â
A hand catches his wrist and a voice says, low and cryptic, âGotcha.âÂ
Crosshair does not scream. He will die on that hill. But the way his heart leaps into his throat and lodges there makes him fall backwards, landing hard on his tailbone.Â
Echo is laughing hysterically, dropping Crosshairâs wrist as he sits up. A combination of the laughter and whatever thing made the unholy, panicked squawk draw the attention of the three persons in the cockpit.Â
Hunter is grinning wide enough that Crosshair knows for an absolute fact that the idiot was in on the whole thing.Â
âWhat were you doing, Cross?â Echo asks between gasps of laughter.Â
Crosshair pushes himself to his feet and stands stiffly, arms crossed, wishing he had a toothpick to break between his teeth. âYou know exactly what I was doing. It was a set up.âÂ
âWhat happened?â Wrecker asks, looking wounded at being left out of whatever Echo and Hunter found hilarious.Â
âEcho fell asleep with his eyes open,â Hunter says, chuckling.Â
Tech adjusts his goggles. âThat is a condition known as nocturnal lagophthalmos. I was not aware Echo had it. Fascinating.âÂ
âHe doesnât have it,â Crosshair grouses. âHunter lied to me.âÂ
Hunter looks shocked. âYouâre the one who told me Echo had that.âÂ
âAnd youâre the one who told me that Hunter did,â Echo puts in, wiping tears from his eyes.Â
Wrecker frowns. âWait? So Hunter sleeps with his eyes open too?âÂ
âNeither of them do,â Crosshair growls.Â
âCrosshair tried to trick Echo and I, so we got him back,â Hunter says, looking far too proud of himself.Â
âSo it was you that screamed like a prepubescent cadet?â Tech asks Crosshair with a grin.Â
âI did not scream,â Crosshair says firmly.Â
âWell, it wasnât me,â Echo says.Â
Wrecker is laughing now. âWait, wait, tell me the whole story.â
Echo happily starts from the beginning.Â

âHow can you stand it like this?â Crosshair asked. âThis place is a mess.â
âNobody made you sit here,â Tech pointed out reasonably, hunched over his data pad. âYou are certainly welcome to leave and return to your own rigidly organized bunk, if you prefer.â
Crosshair just shifted behind him, squishing his cheek more heavily into Techâs shoulder and letting out an exaggerated yawn. âNah. Iâm good.â
âI suspected that was the case,â Tech chuckled. His brotherâs weight against him was a familiar comfort, despite how irritating Crosshair could be sometimes. âWell, you are welcome any time.â
