But what's happening with TNU, you ask? I admit I have much less time for fic now but still very much enjoy TNU and hope to see it to completion. It's something that sporadically crosses my mind, and when I reread what I've written, I fall in love with the story all over again. So I pick at it during my commute and lunch breaks. We'll get there slowly!

I've been writing fanfic for over a decade (oof my back ached typing that) and knowing every word I've written has been read and enjoyed by at least one person has made me the writer I am today. There was nothing quite like the slipperiness of blood. A slickness that smeared and clung to everything and anything, as if it already knew there was no way to return to the veins from which it had gushed. Its new purpose was to stain and horrify. If it could, with its sheer, crimson volume, petrify those that had evicted it from its rightful body, then its existence had purpose. A river, it would become. 

“Your Highness! Are you hurt?” Ronny. A familiar face. An anchor.

“I… y-yes. I mean, no. The… the blood’s not mine.” Kristoff made to get up and slipped. Instead of hitting the marble floor, though, his knee crunched into unmoving flesh. It was a small blessing he hadn’t speared himself on one of the dozen crossbow bolts protruding from the man’s torso like a pincushion. 

Herman dragged him upwards and back, none too gently. “We’ll guard the prince! Make sure these bastards are really dead.”

“Wait—” Bile overtook words. Kristoff dropped to all fours and retched. 

Scattered words swirled around him as his guards waded through the bodies. “—that big talk about their military. These idiots fought like lumps of wood!”

“Any news from the general? Did we manage to intercept their fleet?”

“Still can’t see a thing out there; the fjord’s completely covered in mist after the wall fell. How did they break Princess Elsa’s magic—”

“Forget that! The queen and princess are missing—we need a search party—”

“With what men? We’re already stretched thin as ice—”

Ice. If he’d kept his head down and continued hacking at the frozen tundra and going home to his family of trolls, he wouldn’t be here, crouched in a lake of dark red. Staring at a canopy of death spattered across the hallway like the reaper itself had danced with a conductor’s wand. How easily could he have been one of those bodies splayed out across the same floor Anna always slid down in her socks, laughing and crashing into his arms? Where was Anna? What if she was lying in a ditch somewhere, just like—

“Oi! Got a live one here!”

“You telling me this runt was the commander of this freak show? What, did you use your own soldiers as meat shields? You cowardly little—”

Kristoff looked up to see his men crowded around a huddled figure. If these southerners hadn’t brought swords and bloodlust to Arendelle… if they hadn’t spilled mortality in these sunny halls… 

Don’t be pathetic, Bjorgman. 

“Let me talk to him,” Kristoff rasped. 

“Sir, this scum tried to kill you—”

“Trust me, I’ve noticed.” 

The soldiers quietened. A few stepped away from their quarry, blinking like they had snapped out of a trance. Kristoff knew them all by name, but when they had come to his rescue in a flurry of unforgiving steel, he momentarily couldn’t recognise them. But he recognised himself in their sudden cruelty. They weren’t baying for blood— they were afraid for themselves, their families, their homes. They needed a leader, and Mattias was out the fjord. 

Come on, Lord Regent, he could hear Anna teasing. You’re in charge when I’m gone, remember?

But you’re not gone, Kristoff thought. You’re safe with Elsa somewhere, and you’ll come back to me. 

He rose to his feet. He’d kept his balance on cliffsides and frozen lakes; he could stomach standing on solid ground, nauseatingly slippery as it was. He stopped before the only survivor of the Isles’ ambush party.

“Let’s hear what the crown prince of the Southern Isles has to say. That’s you, right? Jesper Westergaard?”

Spindly shoulders jerked. Bitter memories of another sneering, auburn-haired prince made Kristoff’s fists and jaw tighten. 

“Your father sent you into our tunnels to secure the castle, didn’t he? Bet he didn’t expect us to be waiting for you. He’s probably sitting on the fjord in his big ship, waiting for you to open the gates for him.”

The prince’s sword tinkered on the floor. Herman pushed Kristoff behind him, but Jesper made no move to attack. He only kept his head bowed and rocked slightly on his heels, clenching and unclenching his hand on his sword. Staring down at him, Kristoff realised their adversary was more boy than man.

What would Anna do?

Giving Herman the standby signal, Kristoff knelt down in front of Jesper. “Calm down. Work with us, and no one else needs to get hurt.”

Jesper’s glazed stare remained unerringly fixed on his shoes. Kristoff saw pale lips moving, though. He cautiously leaned in.

“Hurry up hurry up hurry up…”

Kristoff waved a hand in front of the prince’s face. “Hey. Can you hear me?”

“… up hurry up hurry—” The frenetic whispering halted abruptly as Jesper’s head snapped up. Dilated pupils locked on Kristoff’s, swimming in fear and adrenaline and… triumph?

A shiver slithered up Kristoff’s spine. 

Freshly spilled blood could melt snow. Yet it only struck him now, as his soldiers let out shocked cries and whipped out their swords for the second time, that the blood he had been kneeling in was icy enough to chill him to the bone.

Jesper finally met Kristoff’s eyes. He wiped his nose on his sleeve, a wicked smile spreading on his face. “Be a good sport and remember to scream, yeah?”

Chapter 3 Destiny’s Calling

“Lord Sworsin," Elsa began softly, "we apologise for disturbing you at such a late hour, but what we have to show you is of utmost importance." They could see the weariness in his eyes as he glanced at the journal, as if he had been expecting this moment for a long time.

“No need to apologise, Your Majesty.” Lord Sworsin nodded, motioning for them to continue. With trembling hands, Anna opened the journal and placed it before him. As he skimmed through the pages, his face filled with a mixture of sadness and understanding.

He began to speak, his voice heavy with the weight of the past. "This is your mother's journal," he stated, his voice filled with a hint of nostalgia. "A treasure trove of memories and secrets."

Lord Sworsin's voice grew softer, "Your father, as a young boy, ventured into the Northuldrian forest with his own father, King Runeard, to discuss strengthening ties between the Northuldra and Arendelle." he began, his words painting vivid images in their minds. "The Northuldrian people had a deep connection with the elemental spirits of the forest. It was a place of harmony and peace, or so we thought.”

The girls listened intently, their eyes wide with wonder as Lord Sworsin continued. "Tragedy struck, the Northuldra attacked without warning." he continued, his voice tinged with sadness. "A fire, caused by the fire spirit, ravaged the forest. The other spirits, in their frenzy, unleashed chaos. Your grandfather was killed by one of the Northuldra. It sparked a war between the Arendellian and Northuldrian forces."

Silence settled in the room as the weight of this revelation sank in. Anna found her voice, her words filled with a mix of disbelief and sorrow. "Our mother," she began, her voice trembling, "she was Northuldrian, wasn’t she?"

Lord Sworsin sighed heavily, his gaze falling to the floor. "Yes," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "Your mother was Northuldrian."

He continued, "You see, when your father returned from the forest, I found him unconscious in one of our wagons. And there, beside him, was a young girl wearing Arendelle's crest. She had your father's head in her lap, providing him comfort as best she could. She was clearly traumatised."

Sworsin paused for a moment, his gaze lost in the memories. "I knew what she was, but I couldn't find it in my heart to turn her away. Instead, I had her work in the palace, keeping her close to protect her. Little did I know that she would bring so much light and happiness into your father's life."

Anna listened intently, her mind trying to process the weight of this revelation. "And so, she became the queen of Arendelle.” she stated, her voice filled with a mix of awe and confusion.

Sworsin nodded, a hint of a smile appearing on his face. "Yes, Your Highness. Over time, your father fell deeply in love with her, she brought him joy and happiness, especially after the tragic loss of his own father, which haunted him greatly."

The girls were silent, their minds racing with a whirlwind of emotions. Elsa, her voice steady and composed, asked the question that hung in the air. "Who knew?" she inquired, her voice tinged with a mix of curiosity and trepidation.

Lord Sworsin met Elsa's gaze, his eyes filled with sadness and understanding. "Your mother's Northuldrian heritage was a secret known only to a few, myself included." he explained. "She had chosen to keep it hidden, fearing the prejudice and conflict it could bring."

“And father?” She asked quietly.

“To my knowledge, no, I’m afraid he did not.”

Elsa's expression turned to one of disgust, her voice laced with disappointment. "So, our mother was of enemy blood, and our father was oblivious to it all." Anna, feeling at a loss for how to comfort her sister, reached out and gently took Elsa's hand.

“But why? Why would she keep this a secret?" Anna asked, her voice filled with a mix of confusion and longing for answers.

Lord Sworsin sighed, his voice filled with empathy. "Your mother loved your father deeply, and she wanted to protect him and both of you from the pain of the past," he explained. "She believed that by keeping her heritage hidden, she could shield you all from the conflict that had torn her homeland apart."

Anna’s eyes glistened with unshed tears as she absorbed this new information. "But now that we know, what do we do?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Lord Sworsin placed a comforting hand on Anna shoulder. "You must decide what this means for you. Both of you.” he said gently.

"Thank you, Lord Sworsin, for sharing this with us," Elsa said emptily. “Goodnight.”

As Lord Sworsin bid them farewell, the weight of his revelation hung heavy in the air. Elsa couldn't bear the silence any longer and her voice trembled as she broke it. "Anna, are you okay?" she asked with genuine concern etched on her face.

Anna hesitated for a moment, her mind racing with a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. "I... I don't know, Elsa," she finally replied, her words tumbling out in a rush. "I just, I’m so sick of secrets! I mean, how could Mother keep something like this from us? I get she wanted to protect herself and us but it's... it's like she stabbed us in the back, you know?"

Elsa's brows furrowed, her eyes filled with a mix of sadness and anger. "You’re right." she said, her voice tinged with bitterness. "To think that our own mother hid such a significant part of her past from us, from Father... It's hard to wrap my head around it. I, I don't know if I can ever come to terms with it."

Before Anna could respond, a sudden blast of wind blew through the now wide-open window, extinguishing the candles in the room, plunging it into darkness. The howling wind outside grew louder, carrying with it an eerie sense of foreboding.

Startled, the sisters dashed to the window, as they peered out into the night, their eyes widened in disbelief. Arendelle, once a beacon of light and warmth, was now engulfed in darkness. The water and fire had vanished, leaving an eerie emptiness in their wake. The wind tore through the streets, ripping roofs off buildings and uprooting trees. The very ground seemed to tremble beneath their feet.

"What's happening?" Anna shouted, her voice barely audible over the howling wind.

Elsa's gaze was fixed on the darkened sky, her mind racing with thoughts and questions. "I don't know! But we have to do something," Elsa shouted over the roaring wind. "We need to evacuate everyone from Arendelle and get them to safety!"

Anna nodded, her voice filled with urgency. "We’ll get everyone to the cliffs!”

They hurried through the castle halls, their steps echoing in the silence. As they reached the castle grounds, a powerful gust of wind threatened to knock them off their feet.

Spotting Kristoff desperately clinging to Olaf, they hurriedly made their way to his side. The wind howled, threatening to carry Olaf away, but Kristoff held on tightly, refusing to let go.

"Anna! What's going on?" Kristoff called out, his voice carrying over the howling wind.

“I don’t know but need to evacuate everyone to the cliffs for safety. Will you and Sven help us?"

Kristoff nodded, his eyes filled with determination. "Of course!“

With Olaf safely cradled in Kristoff's arms, they sprang into action, forming a united front to guide the frightened citizens through the treacherous streets.

"Head to the cliffs!" Elsa called out, her voice carrying through the tumultuous air. "We'll find safety there!"

The wind continued to howl, its voracious gusts threatening to tear the very fabric of Arendelle apart. Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Sven braced themselves against the powerful force, their determination unwavering.

"Stay close, everyone!" Anna shouted, her voice barely audible above the raging winds.

As they navigated the crumbling streets, the ground trembled beneath their feet, adding urgency to their mission. The once vibrant town now lay in ruins, its buildings battered and broken.

Elsa's icy powers proved invaluable as she as she conjured shimmering barriers to shield the citizens from the cascading debris. Her radiant ice illuminated the darkness, infusing the scene with a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. Meanwhile, Kristoff and Sven toiled tirelessly, helping people navigate the treacherous terrain, and ensuring that no one was left behind.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, they reached the cliffs. The citizens huddled together, finding solace in each other's presence. Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven stood at the forefront, their faces reflecting a mix of exhaustion and relief. As they gazed out at Arendelle, they noticed something unexpected. The relentless wind had finally died down, leaving the town in a state of eerie stillness and ruin.

"We did it," Olaf whispered, his voice filled with awe. "I didn’t think we would!” He chuckled.

As the group stood on the cliffs, relieved that everyone had been safely evacuated, a burst of brilliant light shot into the sky, illuminating the darkened clouds. Suspended in the air were icy diamonds of vibrant red, green, yellow, and purple, shimmering with an otherworldly beauty.

The people of Arendelle stared up in a mix of shock, awe, and for some, horror and disgust. The unexpected sight left them speechless, their eyes wide with disbelief. Elsa, however, looked up with worry and confusion etched on her face. She then glanced down at her hands, questioning if she had caused this phenomenon.

Anna approached Elsa cautiously. "Did you do this, Elsa?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.

Elsa shook her head, her eyes filled with a mixture of surprise and concern. "No, Anna," she replied, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "I don't know what's happening. This...this isn't me."

Kristoff, who had been watching Elsa closely, stepped forward, his expression filled with genuine concern. "Elsa, are you alright?" he asked, his voice laced with worry.

Elsa nodded, her gaze still fixed on the suspended ice crystals. "I'm fi-"

Just as Elsa was about to finish her sentence, a sudden, searing pain shot through her head, causing her to wince and clutch her temples. The intensity of the headache was overwhelming, almost as if her mind was being pierced by icy shards. At the same time, the once suspended ice crystals in the sky began to fall. Yet, amidst the mesmerizing sight of the falling ice crystals, the crowd remained oblivious to Elsa's hidden struggle. The distraction of the spectacle shielded her pain from Anna's watchful eyes.

The people of Arendelle stood in awe and horror as the ice crystals plummeted from above, crashing onto the already devastated remnants of their once beautiful kingdom. The deafening sound of impact echoed through the air, mingling with gasps and cries of those watching. The once-grand structures were now covered in a layer of shattered ice, adding to the desolation that surrounded them.

As the last of the suspended ice crystals shattered and fell, a strange sensation washed over Elsa, relieving the pain in her head and leaving behind a faint buzzing feeling. Amidst the chaos, a figure emerged from the crowd, his face a mix of anger and accusation. It was Councilman Falsen.

"Enough!" Councilmen Falsen bellowed, his voice dripping with disdain. "How many more unnatural phenomena will befall our kingdom because of you? Arendelle is in ruins, and you stand here, pretending innocence!"

Elsa's heart pounded in her chest, her mind racing as she mustered the courage to defend herself. She parted her lips to speak, but her voice betrayed her, faltering as she struggled to find the right words.

Anna, sensing Elsa's struggle, stepped forward, her voice filled with determination. "Hold on just a minute, Falsen," she retorted. "Elsa had nothing to do with this. She's been trying to protect Arendelle, not harm it."

Councilmen Falsen scoffed, his eyes narrowing with skepticism. "Oh, and how convenient that you defend her, Princess Anna," he sneered. "It seems you've been blinded by your sister's powers and can't see the truth."

Councilmen Falsen's eyes narrowed with disdain as Kristoff stepped forward, his voice filled with conviction. "You should watch your words. Elsa is our queen, and she deserves respect."

Councilmen Falsen let out a mocking laugh, his voice dripping with condescension. "And who do we have here? The peasant trying to speak like a noble," he sneered. "Your opinion holds no weight here, boy.”

Kristoff's jaw clenched, his determination unwavering. "My status doesn't define the truth. I've seen firsthand the sacrifices Elsa has made for Arendelle. She deserves respect.”

Falsen scoffed at Kristoff's words, "Boy, your peasant view is irrelevant. But let me ask you this: Why does the Queen of Arendelle need a mere peasant and the Princess herself to defend her? Surely the Queen can speak for herself?”

Anna's gaze shifted from Falsen to her sister, noticing the quickened pace of Elsa's breath and the sudden drop in temperature around her. She could sense Elsa's panic rising, and without hesitation, she jumped in once again to defend her.

"Enough, Falsen!" Anna's voice rang out, filled with determination. "Your prejudice blinds you from seeing the truth. Elsa is our queen, and she has proven time and again that she is worthy of our trust. We stand by her, no matter what."

Councilmen Falsen crossed his arms, his expression still filled with doubt. "I find it hard to believe that this is all just a coincidence." he muttered.

Anna, her voice filled with determination, took a step forward. "Well, we won't find any answers by pointing fingers and placing blame," she declared. "Arendelle needs its leaders to work together, not tear each other apart.”

Kristoff nodded in agreement.

Councilmen Falsen paused for a moment, his gaze shifting between Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff. Finally, he let out a sigh, his anger subsiding slightly. "Very well," he conceded. "But mark my words, if we discover that you had any part in this, Queen Elsa, there will be consequences."

Elsa weakly nodded.

As Falsen walked away, Anna couldn't help but mutter under her breath, "The nerve of that guy! Who does he think he is?"

Kristoff chimed in, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, he’s got some serious attitude."

Turning their attention back to Elsa, Anna gently placed a hand on her sister's shoulder. "Hey, Elsa, are you okay?”

Elsa's eyes filled with desperation as she shook her head, her voice trembling. "What are we supposed to do?" Panic gripped her, and she began to voice her fears aloud. "I don't know how to fix this. Arendelle will never trust me again."

Anna's heart ached for her sister as she squeezed Elsa's shoulder. "Elsa," she said softly, her voice filled with empathy, "I understand how overwhelming this feels right now. But remember, we've faced challenges before, and we've always found a way through. We'll find a way this time too."

Elsa's panic began to subside slightly as she listened to her sister’s words. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "I trust you, both of you." she whispered, her gaze shifting between Anna and Kristoff.

Kristoff, sensing Elsa's unease, placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry, Elsa. We'll figure this out together.” he said, his voice filled with determination.

Just as Kristoff finished speaking, the ground beneath them began to rumble once more. The sound of rocks shifting filled the air, catching Kristoff's attention. He swiftly spun around, only to come face to face with none other than Bulda. Without missing a beat, Bulda enveloped Kristoff in a flurry of affectionate kisses, her joy overflowing. "Oh, Kristoff, my dear, I've missed you!" she exclaimed, smothering his cheeks with her loving gestures.

In the midst of the whirlwind, Grand Pabbie, the wise and ancient troll, rolled onto the scene. His voice carried a sense of urgency as he turned to Elsa and Anna. "Elsa, Anna, I need to speak to you both." he declared, his words laced with a weighty importance.

Elsa's eyes widened in surprise and concern. She exchanged a quick glance with Anna before stepping forward to meet Grand Pabbie. "What is it, Grand Pabbie? What do you need to tell us?" she asked, her voice filled with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

Grand Pabbie, his voice carrying the weight of ancient wisdom, began to speak. "The spirits of the Enchanted Forest have been awoken.” he revealed, his words resonating through the air.

Anna, always eager for answers, couldn't help but ask, "Why now? And what does it have to do with Arendelle?"

“Let me see what I can see.” Grand Pabbie, his eyes glowing with ancient magic, used his powers to show them visions of what he could see. "The past is not what it seems," he explained, his voice echoing with wisdom. "A wrong must be righted, for Arendelle's safety. Without uncovering the truth, I see no future for Arendelle."

Elsa turned to Kristoff, her voice filled with determination. "Kristoff, do you think we could use your wagon to travel to the Enchanted Forest?" she asked, her eyes searching for his approval.

Kristoff scratched his head, contemplating the request. "Well, I've never taken my wagon that far…” he said, looking at Sven. "Sven, you think you can handle it?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. Sven nodded happily, his antlers bobbing in agreement. "Thanks, buddy.” Kristoff chuckled, patting Sven's back.

Anna looked surprisingly at Elsa and asked, "Wait, you’re including me in this adventure?"

Elsa nodded, a small smile forming on her lips. "Of course, like you said, we're in this together.” she reassured her sister. Anna's face lit up with excitement and relief.

"Another life-threatening adventure? Count me in!" Olaf exclaimed, his carrot nose wiggling with excitement.

Elsa turned to Grand Pabbie once again, her voice filled with hope. "Grand Pabbie, I know it's a lot to ask, but could you please allow the people of Arendelle to seek refuge in your valley? Arendelle has become uninhabitable." she requested.

Grand Pabbie's kind eyes met hers, and he nodded with a reassuring smile. "Of course, Elsa. I will ensure their safety and well-being until your return.” he assured her.

As Elsa strode away with Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven, preparing for the journey that lay ahead, Anna moved to join them. But just as she was about to catch up, Grand Pabbie's voice rang out, calling her name with a sense of urgency.

"Anna," he spoke, his voice laced with worry and a touch of sorrow. "I fear for Elsa. I see before her a path fraught with danger and darkness. A journey that will test her strength and resilience, and a fate that may be cruel and unforgiving."

Anna's heart sank, her eyes reflecting the weight of the words spoken by the wise elder. She looked down, her mind swirling with thoughts of the perils that awaited her beloved sister. But then, a flicker of determination ignited within her.

"No," she whispered, her voice filled with determination and unwavering love, meeting Grand Pabbie’s gaze once again, "I won't let anything happen to her." she declared, her voice filled with resolve.

second... i have been thinking about this question a lot over the last day or so, but i'm afraid my answer might be pretty disappointing 🥲 i don't have any specific points or benchmarks that i try to hit in terms of the portrayal of the characters—they are just jack and elsa. 🥲🥲🥲

although!! now that i think about it!! i suppose it is fair to say that across my stories i consistently incorporate (adapted, direct, referential, evocative) plot structures from the frozen/rotg movies, and jack and elsa often behave similarly in each contextual situation—despite the overt differences in settings/universes—depending on their current stage of character growth.

i'm grateful that you and i are just lucky that we both like my interpretations of them! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

already on here but elsa from frozen is soooooo aroace to me, not just because she doesn't get a love interest but because of her entire storyline and especially the juxtaposition to anna in terms of their opposing views on romance. and at the end of the day, elsa's "true love" is her FAMILIAL love for her sister, even though anna was searching for romance the whole time when it came to finding her "true love"
