Some people have been saying this, but I don't think it's been said enough and I'm just going to add my voice to the mix.

Nimona's nomination is being framed as an example of "Look at what Disney missed out on!" and I get it. It's a nice, tasty schadenfreude situation and we all like to see The Mouse get taken down a peg.

But I think we need to be very clear; Disney did not miss out on anything because they were never going to take that sort of risk.

Disney was never going to release anything close to the Nimona we got. It would have been sanded down until anything obviously queer or controversial was as faint and unnoticeable as possible by the casual viewer. And then they would still be too scared of any potential backlash. So they would have given the film a limited release at theatres, with no advertising, or social media or support.

Like what happened with Strange World.

You remember Strange World, right?

No?

That's because no one does.

And I believe that was deliberate, because that way Disney can go "Weeellll... obviously we would LOVEto take more risks and have more inclusive stories but that's clearly not what the public wants!"

Look at the original concepts for Wish. The evil royal couple? The peter-panesque star boy that would have made the gen zers go feral the same way millenials went feral for Jack Frost? These could have been the best things about the movie, and even they were scrapped, and replaced with something more homogenised. And those ideas are nowhere near the level of the concepts and discussions Nimona brought to the table.

Disney can barely have explicit gay people. Nimona has a gay south Asian man in a relationship with an east Asian man. As a protagonist! But more than that, you think Disney could ever come up with a relationship as complicated and difficult as Boldheart and Goldenloin's? They would never have the guts to show one love interest cutting off the other's arm in a straight relationship. Let alone a gay one! And then for them to be on opposite sides of the conflict, shifting between feelings of betrayal, and questioning each other motives? That's some adult dark shit for a kids film.

Asha as a character was forced into the quirky girl role that Disney has already flogged to death with Anna and Rapunzel. You ever think they would allow a Disney princess to be as dark and violent and nuanced as Nimona? You ever picture the titial character of a Disney film AS the third act conflict, rampaging through a city in a self destructive rage? Nimona is anti authoritarian, vengeful, bloodthirsty, a pretty explicit trans allegory, and even, by the climax, openly suicidal. You KNOW that terrified Disney.

I had a thing about the Director here too but I was shocked by how long that got so I'll have to save her for a different post.

My point is the things that make Nimona art, that make Nimona a great story, that make the film important and Oscar worthy, are all things that Disney has become too chicken shit to produce. If Disney had released a film called Nimona it wouldn't have been Nimona. I fully believe that if the film hadn't had been 90% finished it wouldn't have been shelved. It would have been lobotomised and vivisected. Everything special and vital about the movie and its message would have been removed, and no one would have known what could have been. Once again we would have gotten scraps and been thankful for them.

It makes me think about films like Wish (and others we don't know the name of, and never will) and think of what they could have been if studio's like Disney were braver and let their artists make art, instead of content.

tl;dr Disney didn't miss out on Nimona because they are incapable of making Nimona. If they had produced it the real Nimona wouldn't exist. We didn't miss out on Nimona. And that's purely by luck.

Personal thoughts on Team Black, Rhaenyra, and Misogyny.

This is going to be a messy one as regard structure but also topic. Stay with me, people.

I've been seeing a lot of accusations of misogyny against anti-team black, anti-rhaenyras, and anti-hotd posters for criticisms uttered, and I can't help but be a little dumbfounded. Like are we really doing this? Pointing out that Rhaenyra was reckless for having 3 bastards is not misogyny. I'm sorry, as much as you guys might love your make-believe character, I'm just not humoring it. Not if you're going to make the conversation about feminism and sexual liberation.

Okay, let me just say. Rhaenyra having Jace I can understand. An experiment that was stupid but also respectable in a way, because Laenor was definitely traumatized and not fit for keeping up their agreement, so I can support that mistake wholeheartedly for the empathy behind it. But Luke and Joffrey? After finding out that her genes get overriden by Harwin's?

Plain stupid. I'm sorry, that's just playing with fire, especially since she should know how precarious her position would be after the precedent of the Great Council that robbed Rhaenys of her birthright on the basis of her gender.

And like, I'd be fine with it if the show didn't portray it as this girlboss, don't-give-a-fuck win, because all it does is highlight how ignorant the showrunners are about the world in which their show is set! I liked selfish and decadent Rhaenyra in the books, she didn't need to be treated as a hero for it.

And the fact that the rest of the world and everyone in it is portrayed as being at fault for not going along with what's basically that society's equivalent of a political clown show is absurd. Pointing this out doesn't mean I'm condoning it either, I'm criticizing the show's lack of self-awareness. It's so obvious the showrunners are disconnected from the their world.

GRRM writes all his characters as believable people grown up in a medieval society, but critiques it through his own modern moral lense in a way that's seemless, yet in this show they use characters as mouthpieces to spout modern feminist and egalitarian ideals from characters who are ruling class. Who the fuck are they kidding? If you want to make a feminist show, don't use bourgeoisie feminism!!! Idgaf about some Princess' sexual liberation while she's allowed to hold feasts that rips the food from the tables of peasants! There's nothing inspiring about that!

Rhaenyra, one of the single most bourgeois figure in the show, is supposed to be praised for her "sexual liberation" when it literally threatens the stability of the entire realm, and directly caused a war in which countless sexual atrocities were committed and will still be committed? Forgive me if I can't find it in me to be inspired.

If you want the show to be feminist, display the themes through the people at the bottom, the normal workers, the whores, the thieves, the daytalers and smiths and carpenters and undertakers and farmers, etc etc. Don't ask people to cheer for a reckless white woman from a colonizer background with a biological WMD at her disposal for breaking the social contract of a ruling class SHE'S A PART OF and risking destabilizing her entire country, it's fucking insulting! And don't get me started on the gender essentialism of the whole "women good, men bad" horseradish horseshit.

I'd love to discuss and analyze these concepts if we're talking about Rhaenyra's character arc, her as a person, and the themes of patriarchy that one can glean through her. But if we're talking actual, meaningful, proletariat feminism that means something to the medieval society they live in?

You wanna praise this brave monarch for sexually liberating herself, go ahead and praise the female Romans in Spartacus while you're at it. Praise their sexual liberation when they avail themselves of sex slaves taken from Thrace and Gaul and wherever else the Roman Empire had reach and rape them for fun. Understand I'm not comparing Rhaenyra's actions with having her kids with Harwin to rape, I'm pointing out power dynamics. And at least that show had the decency to show that the patrician romans were cruel and vile alongside their humanity, unlike HotD which seems to insist its ruling family of dragonriding depraved incestuous monarchs are actually virtuous while literally having Meleys burst through the floorboards and massacre a crowd.

P.S.: for any Anti-Rhaenyras, please don't start shit about her unless you wanna discuss how the writers fucked up her beloved character. I actually liked her in the books and she should've gotten a bigger part than Daemon, so don't slander her all willy nilly. It's unconstructive and I feel no desire to engage.

This is going to be a little bit of a differently-formatted timeline.

These items in bold red are critical rota stories that sort of blew things open, if you will. These ones will have excerpts.

Let's jump in! One quick disclaimer first: This isn't an exhaustive list. this is only what I've been able to dig up today.

10/28/2018: The real Charles revealed: William’s wild mood swings, Harry’s pre-wedding meltdown and how the Prince of Wales finally earned his boys’ respect, as revealed by his biographer ROBERT JOBSON

The weeks leading up to the wedding had been far more tense for both Harry and Meghan than most people realised. In fact, they’d both felt so stressed that they’d booked a series of appointments with Ross Barr, known as ‘the acupuncturist to the stars’. Whether these treatments had much impact on Harry is debatable. In the build-up to the wedding, says an inside source, he was ‘petulant and short-tempered’ with members of staff. 11/10/2018: CDAN Blind. This came out a couple of weeks after tumblr (the old TCD blog) got a massive dose of Aussie tea. Scroll down to August 2019 for those stories.

Apparently the diva behavior on a recent trip was nothing compared to the verbally abusive thrashing the employee took on that trip when things were not perfect. The employee threatened to sue because of how bad the abuse was which would have become public. The employee instead was given a check and an apology by the in-laws of the former actress turned abuser.

11/15/2018: Duke and Duchess of Cambridge join youngsters on The One Show sofa to speak about new anti-bullying app (with Kate in another recycled dress by Emilia Wickstead). This event was the day after Charles’s 70th birthday bash at BP, to which Meghan wore the blood earrings again and the gossip leaked that the Sussexes left early.

11/17/2018: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle change plans to move into Kensington Palace apartment as resident Royal ‘doesn’t want to leave’ by The Sun. This was the first time that rumors of a rift between the Cambridges and the Sussexes over behavior/attitude were published by the printed press.

Kensington Palace isn’t short of luxury accommodation, with Prince William and Kate Middleton living in a lavish 20-room apartment in the grounds. And it is also the residence of The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. The Queen’s cousin, The Duke of Gloucester, 74, and his wife Birgitte, 72, live next door to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in their grand 21-room apartment. Prince Harry is said to have been eyeing up the property as the perfect place to raise a family. But a source claims Danish-born Brigitte is refusing to move. The Mail quoted a friend of Duchess of Gloucester saying: “Birgitte doesn’t want to leave. “And why should she? She and her husband are still full-time working members of The Firm and they were given their apartment by Her Majesty.”

Many blogs read the bolded section above as Harry and Meghan were pushing the Gloucesters hard to move out of KP #1. Not necessarily bullying them, but...not being nice about it either.

11/28/2018: Meghan Markle ‘left Kate Middleton in tears’ over her strict demands for Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid’s dress by Jack Royston, The Sun.

This is one of the earliest "admissions" that Meghan sends the staff emails out of business hours.

Rumours of a rift between the duchesses swirled after royal sources revealed emotional Kate, 36, ended up weeping. An insider claimed the incident followed a “stressful” dress fitting — just weeks before Meghan, 37, married Prince Harry. Royal aides did not deny the incident had taken place, amid claims that the duchesses are “very ­different people”. Princess Charlotte, three, had been trying on her outfit just weeks before Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry. Meghan, 37, is understood to have insisted on “the very best” for her big day — but the fitting did not go according to her demands. Royal sources said the pressure of the “stressful” fitting became too much for her now sister-in-law, and that Duchess of Cambridge Kate was left shaken and in tears. An insider told the Daily Telegraph: “Kate had only just given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, and was feeling quite ­emotional.” The reported incident sparked rumours of a rift between Kate and the Duchess of Sussex. The duchesses are understood to have put the incident behind them.

12/11/2018: How royal staff are calling Meghan Duchess Difficult as 2nd aide exits by The Daily Express. This is the first recording of "Duchess Difficult" in the printed press and the first hints that Harry may have confronted William about Meghan's red carpet welcome into the BRF.

The Duchess let slip recently that she's not sleeping well and has resorted to 4.30am yoga sessions to help her relax. However, her early starts, also said to involve firing off emails, aren't to everyone's taste and Meghan will soon have to find an aide more in tune with her lifestyle.

Kate was reported to have become upset by the manner in which Meghan speaks to staff and although this has been denied by Kensington Palace it has not stopped the chatter that all is not harmonious.

4/12/2019: The Meghan Markle ‘Duchess Difficult’ Rumors Just Won’t Stop - and This One is Bizarre by Glamour Magazine. I'm including this one because it cites a few Sun articles that are no longer accessible.

According to The Sun, staff members at Frogmore Cottage, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new home, have been "banned" from using the parking lot closest to the residence and instead must use the one a mile away. The sources who spoke to The Sun seem to confirm a change in parking permits is happening, but here's the kicker: It was reportedly the superintendent of the castle's decision, not Markle's. And yet all the tabloids reporting this story are making it seem as though Markle woke up and randomly decreed, "You know what would be fun? Forcing all the staff members to walk a mile to work each day." The headline in one article starts with "Not in Meg Back Yard," which is apparently the acronym insiders are using to describe this change. That makes it sound like Markle is the one behind the choice.

But I have personally witnessed more than one member of staff driven to tears by the treatment they were subjected to by the duke and duchess before the couple acrimoniously quit as working royals. One person sobbed down the phone to me after a particularly harrowing day. They clearly felt emotionally broken and could no longer cope with the pressure they were being subjected to. Others have indicated to me they were being asked to behave in a manner they did not feel professionally comfortable with, particularly in their dealings with the media. Several aides have also told me that Meghan in particular was very good at 'drawing' staff into her confidence, flattering them as if they were the only person in the world she could trust and asking them to help her with various duties.

She had worked for the Queen for more than 20 years and was personally persuaded by the monarch to stay on and help the couple navigate their first few years of royal life. He indicated that she was experiencing extreme stress and said: 'I questioned if the Household policy on bullying and harassment applies to principals [the term used to refer to a member of the royal family].' One source tells me wryly, with an eye to Meghan's much-hyped championing of female empowerment: 'Note that everyone concerned was a woman.' Another adds: 'Sam always made clear that it was like working for a couple of teenagers. They were impossible and pushed her to the limit. She was miserable.'

The newspaper reports how Meghan cut short a visit to a market in Fiji because she was concerned about the presence of a UN organisation promoting women, with which she had worked before and made clear she no longer wished to have anything to do with. At the time officials had suggested that it was because it was humid and the crowd was oppressive in the market. I was there at the time and witnessed Meghan turn and 'hiss' at a member of her entourage, clearly incandescent with rage about something, and demand to leave. I later saw that same – female – highly distressed member of staff sitting in an official car, with tears running down her face. Our eyes met and she lowered hers, humiliation etched on her features. At the time I was unable to document anything as I couldn't conclusively link the two incidents together, despite my suspicions. I have subsequently found out from other sources that my instincts were right.

the wanderer of sumeru is all but lovely. he is “hat guy”, the mysterious vahumana scholar who showed up out of nowhere just days ago, already gathering an infamous identity for being scornful and anti-social. he is lesser lord kusanali’s assistant, a thinly veiled title to mask the fact that he is a prisoner under her watch. many do not know him because he refuses to work in the spotlight, much like the acting grand sage, and those who do don’t always have the best impression of him.

and even lesser truly know of where he had come from: his mother who is raiden ei, his origins in tatarasuna, his affiliation with the fatui, his obsession with the electro gnosis, and what he once was to sumeru: a false god, a monster, the near-cause of the land of wisdom’s destruction.

but the lack of something will always be attracted to an abundance of something. you are nothing but lovely; the loveliest, if anyone had to say. you are dazzling and you are beautiful, turning heads towards you when you walk the street. you are kind and generous towards the stray kittens on treasure street, and cheerful and easygoing with the store owners when you visit them. people sing praises of you everywhere wanderer goes, and to say he hadn’t had his own experience with you was incorrect.

he remembers himself fighting wave after wave of fatui soldiers, and himself slowly getting more exhausted by the minute, when you came in like a saviour angel from above, plunging on the last of enemies with your bow. he recalls your hits being barely a fraction of how hard he can slice through an enemy, yet when you assisted in defeating those annoying fatui back then, you turned around and asked if he was okay with the brightest smile imaginable.

(to the traveler or nahida, he would’ve given a sarcastic reply. to any ordinary civilian, he would’ve ignored them and been on his way. that day, he recalls being utterly speechless, while the rising sun glows behind your head, giving you a halo, illuminating your smile further. you are the most radiant sight he has ever seen.)

he seeks you out secretly like a stray cat following the only kind soul who fed it milk. sometimes, he watches over you in the air, making sure you’re safe. other times he just observes your interactions with others, ever so relieved to see that you are loved by sumeru just as much as you have shown its people love. more often than not he catches himself drifting off to a dream filled with you, being flustered and ashamed of such pathetic behaviour. but sometimes he also gets too lost in his thoughts, melancholy overtaking his face when he thinks of the shining star that you are.

wanderer’s hands are decorated with filth and blood. they show, sometimes, after an exhausting fight with the fatui. in his peripheral vision, hallucinations of that kid, that blacksmith, and the doctor come and go. in the dead of night, when sumeru sleeps soundly and all that is to be heard are the rustling of leaves in the wind, wanderer looks at his shaking hands and closes them in a fist, wiping them harshly, trying to rub off the sins stained on them. he is a terrible person to others. he is a terrible person to himself.

he is not a lovely person. you are the embodiment of ‘lovely’ itself. he couldn’t possibly deserve to be with you, lest his filth and sinful hands taint your pure being. it would simply be unconscionable for someone like him; damaged past, wreck and ruin, an empty soulless shell, to be close to your brightness. no one, not even himself, would forgive him if he were to ruin who you are: sumeru’s loveliest, the one who loves sumeru, and the one whom sumeru loves.

it is yet another night of watching you enter your house safely, staring at your front door for a few moments more before heading back to his residence (nevermind that he was the one to clear all the enemies in your path ahead, while you weren’t seeing). if nahida ever pointed out the lingering fond look in his eyes, or if the traveler teased him about having a possible crush on someone, there would be no need to blush madly and scamper away like a schoolgirl, for he knows that there is zero chance of “us” with him and you.

there are many fairy tales that are popular in morepesok village, most of which ajax have heard in his childhood many times. his distant memories include his mother, still youthful and full of smiles, reading him one of such fairy tales to lull him to sleep. he remembers her warm caress, the pulling of a quilt over his tiny body, and the soft flicker of the candle beside his mother, waiting to be blown out for the night. he also remembers you, his childhood best friend, his sleepover buddy, his other half, tucked into bed right next to him. if he searched hard enough, he might find some candid pictures of you and him, cuddled next to each other in the bed, in his childhood home.

“so then, the prince and the princess ended up happily ever after again?” 8 year-old ajax yawned, a sleepy smile on his face.

“they did, again,” his mother’s warm chuckle resonates throughout the room, through his ears, into his heart. he stores her laugh like a cassette tape in his memory, wanting to play it over and over again in the future.

“i can’t imagine a fairy tale where the prince and princess don’t end up together,” you murmured beside ajax, as his mother tucked the two of you in.

“that should be us, then,” ajax turned to face you and grinned, “so we’ll never be apart. let’s pinky promise that you’ll always be the princess and i’ll always be the prince!”

“why do i have to be your princess?” you complained, only to be shushed by ajax’s mother before she blew the candle out, signalling the end of pillow talk and the start of dreamland.

(all three of you knew it was impossible for you and ajax to be completely silent after lights out. the giggles that progressively get louder and harder after his mother leaves the room are testament to that.

this time, however, ajax is deadly silent, and you reach out to cup his face to ask what’s wrong.)

“sorry,” ajax holds the hand you cupped his cheek with. “you don’t have to be the princess, it’s okay. but i want to be your prince. i want to rescue you from the bad guys and defeat bad guys in your name. i’ll even do a pinky promise to prove it.”

even though you don’t give him a verbal answer, you hold his hand as he sleeps. it brings enough reassurance to 8 year-old ajax.

such peaceful times are unreachable now, ever since he fell.

ajax has not seen you for ten years. you have seen tartaglia for none.

when he returns, his familiar fluff of ginger hair in front of your doorstep, you have to do a double take. gone is the scrawny boy you knew, that got sick after every ice fishing trip, and cried over the smallest of scratches; in front of you now stands a fearsome harbinger, the tsaritsa’s vanguard, a killing machine with no life in his eyes.

(that is not ajax, any longer. that is tartaglia. that is a fatui harbinger. where is your ajax?)

you cannot bring yourself to smile when he presents you with a bouquet of pink roses, despite how beautifully preserved and fragrant they are. your heart doesn’t soften even when he greets your parents politely, plays with your siblings, cooks your family dinner, and helps with the dishes. that is not ajax whom you’ve let into your home, in contrast to what the rest of your family believes. that is a stranger who has intruded your safe space.

it hurts childe more than it hurts you to be on the receiving end of haunted eyes and hostile stares. he knows that he is vastly different from the childhood best friend he was to you ten years ago, and no matter what he does now, you will always see him as tartaglia, childe, the vanguard. you love ajax, but ajax is who he once was. ajax had been forced to throw himself away to survive. it wasn’t his fault that ajax is dead, but he cannot blame you for defiantly wanting your ajax back.

to say that the great magician lyney is fully authentic in his shows would be a bit of a stretch, for he is an actor on the stage before he is a magician, however hard or long he may rehearse the day before the show. every smile had been sculpted and practised for hours until it was deemed perfect enough to be seen by his audience. needless to say, ‘the great magician lyney’ is merely a farce, an identity of its own. he wishes not to confuse that lyney with ‘fatui lyney’ and just ‘lyney’.

you were just supposed to be another face in the audience, an unsuspecting fellow he was meant to charm, attract, and never remember the face of. but you show up to a show once, then twice, then thrice, and soon you become a familiar face that lyney notices in the audience every now and then.

(that’s what lyney says, at least. lynette knows that he secretly seeks out your face behind the curtains, and the moment he finds you, his smile widens a tad bit, and his voice is a little cheerier as he steps out on stage.

but it is not easy to always be just ‘lyney’ with you, for he is called to be the great magician by day, and fatui by night. rarely is there time given to him to be his true self in front of you, to let the curtains fall and the farce fade. you can’t remember the last time he was allowed to let his shoulders slump, his face be bare of makeup, and his head rest under your chin as you kissed his tears.

and it seems you won’t be seeing those ever again.

lyney feels his blood run cold the moment father mentions your name in a mission, so casually, almost as if she had let your name slip out of her lips innocently and accidentally, if he hadn’t known any better. but lyney has been her loyal servant, her ‘favourite child’ for years, and he knows that the mere mention of your name is but a warning to him.

“i seem to be craving coffee recently. no one brews it quite as well as [name] does, i fear,” is what the knave says.

that person seems to be distracting you. i will eliminate them soon, is what she means.

lyney cannot afford to let anymore people close to him get hurt. his parents, who passed when he was very young… lynette, whose life had been endangered too many times to count… cesar, who taught him everything and treated him with love even in just ten days…

you shouldn’t need to fall into the same trend as well. your life is peaceful, precious, and untainted unlike his. so, it should remain untouched. and lyney decides that this is when he does what he has to do.

on the day that you return home and see lumidouce bells on your doorstep instead of lyney, you feel your heart plummet to your stomach. your gut turns and folds nastily, and stars increasingly flood your vision while a silent plea rings in your head, but there is nothing logical that refutes the contents of the letter that lyney had left you. that is all you have left of him.

the rest is to be expected. feeling betrayed and abandoned, you lose all feelings for lyney, not wanting to be associated with him again. his gifted trinkets left in your house are all thrown out. you can’t look at a magic show advertisement for more than two seconds. it takes only a little while to get over this heartbreak, but once you are fully free of all emotional attachment to lyney, you never think about him and his rainbow roses ever again.

lyney’s plan goes exceptionally well. of course it does; it was as meticulously planned as all his performances are. he returns to the house later that night to report back to father, submitting his response to her threats weeks ago: [name] is nothing to me now. hence, you cannot hurt them.

(however successful his plan was, he cannot bring himself to smile in response to the knave’s satisfied one.)

later, on the same night, when he slips out of the house, he finds himself wandering towards the place where he usually picks his rainbow roses from. a gentle pluck, a flick of his hand; a lumidouce bell takes its place instead. he smiles at his own trick bitterly, before pressing his lips to the blue flower and intertwining another rainbow rose with it. 

a moment of hesitation comes, followed by a few minutes of uneasy pacing, until lyney makes the decision to squeeze the petals with his gloved hand. the crumpled pink and blue petals fall to the ground. lyney only gazes as they do so.

(he wishes he could do the same to his own heart, but that is barely a fraction of how he made you feel. he will look for more ways to punish himself, then.)

The supreme court justice Samuel Alito and a German aristocrat and “networker of the far right” from whom Alito accepted expensive concert tickets, are both linked to an ultra-conservative Catholic US group whose board members include the dark money impresario Leonard Leo and the founder of a hardline anti-abortion Christian group, documentation reviewed by the Guardian shows.

In 2018, Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, told the New York Times about attending a dinner hosted in Rome by James Harvey, an American cardinal and hardliner, and sponsored by the Napa Institute, a group founded by Timothy R Busch, a conservative Catholic businessman and political activist.

Leo, 59, is an activist and fundraiser who worked on the confirmations of all six rightwing justices who now dominate the supreme court, Alito among them. Now controlling billions of dollars in funding for rightwing groups, Leo is a director of the Napa Institute Legal Foundation, also known as Napa Legal Institute, and the Napa Institute Support Foundation.

Also among Napa Legal Institute directors is Alan Sears, founder of the Alliance Defending Freedom. The ADF was the principal driver of Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case in which the supreme court ended the federal right to abortion, with Alito writing the ruling handed down in June 2022.

In 2017, the Napa Institute hosted a two-day symposium at the Trump hotel in Washington, during which Alito attended a dinner.

Writing for the Washington Post, John Gehring, an author and reporter, said the symposium “mixed traditional Catholic religious practices with moments that felt uncomfortably nationalistic”, including a “reading in the rosary booklet from [the Confederate general] Robert E Lee that [seemed] … stunningly insensitive at best … at a time when the ‘alt-right’ and white nationalism are basking in the glow of renewed attention and proximity to power”.

Alito is not the only supreme court justice with links to the Napa Institute. In September 2021, as part of a series sponsored by the group, Justice Clarence Thomas spoke at the University of Notre Dame.

“The court was thought to be the least dangerous branch and we may have become the most dangerous,” Thomas said, attacking judges he deemed to be “venturing into areas we should not have entered into” – meaning politics.

Thomas and Alito, however, have been the subject of numerous reports about undeclared gifts from rightwing donors, fueling an ethics crisis now stoked by news of Alito’s acceptance of concert tickets valued at $900 from von Thurn und Taxis.

Von Thurn und Taxis, 64, is a former punk turned billionaire, also known as Princess TNT, with close links to the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. News of her gift to Alito was accompanied by reporting of further links between the two, including a picture of Alito and another rightwing justice, Brett Kavanaugh, posing at the supreme court in 2019 with the German socialite; Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, a German hardliner; and Brian Brown, a prominent US anti-LGBTQ+ campaigner.

Von Thurn und Taxis told German media that Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann, attended a concert at her castle in Bavaria last year as “private friends”. In emails to the Guardian, the aristocrat clarified: “We never speak about politics nor religion at the table, because we believe it limits the possibility to make friends.”

The socialite, who rejects the label “networker of the far right”, also said it would “never occur” to her to speak about “touchy subjects” like abortion with someone she knew socially, and claimed not to know that “the Dobbs decision” referred to the supreme court abortion rights ruling written by Alito.

In a speech at the National Conservatism Conference in Brussels last April, von Thurn und Taxis said European leaders were “financ[ing] the killing of our offspring” in an apparent reference to the availability of reproductive rights in Europe. She added: “Does this make any sense? Is there some kind of racism? Are we not supposed to reproduce?”

Alito and his wife have also been outspoken about abortion and other hot-button cultural issues. In June, the progressive activist Lauren Windsor released recordings in which Justice Alito agreed that the US should “return … to a place of godliness” and said, “I don’t know that we can negotiate with the left”. Regarding her supposed persecution from those on the left, his wife said: “Look at me, look at me. I’m German. I’m from Germany. My heritage is German. You come after me, I’m gonna give it back to you.”

Caroline Ciccone, president of Accountable.US, which campaigns for court reform and which highlighted links between the German socialite, the Napa Institute and Alito, said: “When a supreme court justice like Samuel Alito pals around with influential rightwing figures like Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and Leonard Leo, it raises concerns about fairness and impartiality.

“These relationships aren’t just about gifts. They reflect a deeper effort to manipulate our legal system in ways that could impact the rights of everyday people.”

Ciccone added, “What’s disturbing is that this happens behind closed doors – at parties at the Bavarian castle – away from public scrutiny. We’re talking about relationships that can affect everything, from reproductive rights to environmental protections” – both the subject of recent supreme court rulings widely seen as victories for the political right.

“The American people deserve a judiciary that serves justice impartially,” Ciccone said, “not one that can be bought.”

I get she has social anxiety but the way she goes about stalking Adrien is kind of the worst like she even has creep shots of him hanging in her room? That’s weird. I think Adrien’s going through enough without having to deal with the main character being his stalker lol. I know they’re (spoilers) at this point but in the beginning it was so sus

In the newest season, Marinette hides the fact that Hawkmoth was Adrien’s dad. This leads to the bastard getting a statue and honored as a hero after his death. Adrien now never gets to know the fact that his abusive and neglectful father was the one trying to kill him and is instead proud of him.

Her crush on Adrien is like a black hole for her character. Things she’s done because of it:

1) stolen property

2) ruined dates

3) humiliated other characters

4) has a chart of Adrien’s daily schedule for the next year in her room (this is stalking)

5) broke into his room and sniffed his pillow (also a crime)

6) sniffed, took the hair from, and tried to kiss what she thought was a wax statue of Adrien

7) convinced her parents to let her go to China. Why? Not because she wants to connect with her mother’s heritage, not even because she’s a budding fashion designer and Shanghai is considered a fashion hotspot. It’s because Adrien was there.

I started the show, watched one episode, and never tried again. I simply do not vibe with her.

Your basic Mary Sue. Styled as the incredibly cool best-assassin in the land at only 18, she nevertheless is constantly snuck up upon, distracted by pretty boys, and possesses not an ounce of wit. In a competition between murderers and thieves to win a place as the King's Champion, she sees a bag of chocolates on her bed that she didn't put there and immediately starts eating it and gushing about how much she adores chocolate - nevermind that they just had a trial involving poison, which several of her competitors are adept at. She's always right, and other characters exist just to tell her how awesome and beautiful and wonderful she is. And then she turns out to be a super special magical fey princess!

I generally don't believe that a Mary Sue is a bad thing, but the only thing I remember about this book was how she had been in prison for years but was super young but was also still the most super-specialest assassin. And she kept reading when she should have been training or sleeping. Like, girl, this is not final exams where you can stay up all night and then roll into class in your pajamas and still squeak out a C. It's supposed to be life and death. Her character traits didn't make her relatable, they made her a moron

I love them. What's not to love. It's everything you love about harringrove and more. Sadly I haven't come across too many longform fem!harringrove fics, though I may no be looking in the right places.

Steve already has such a female coded story arch. I've talked about this before, but he is (quite accidentally on the Duffers part) a subversion of the Queen Bee story trope. Haughty rich bitch, gets humbled, dethroned and either "gets just deserts" or "gets redeemed "learns from their mistakes". Which is why he was PRIMED to slide right into the "Princess & The Bad Boy" trope with Billy. Our bodies were ready. Joe was ready. But alas, the Duffers - they were not ready. But yeah, fem!Steve is super easy to imagine right down to the "everyone thinks I'm just a slutty bimbo, but there's so much more to me" angst fest, set to the backdrop of negligent hopeless parents who think presents are a substitute for actual parenting.

Fem!billy is my favorite to imagine. Not only because she'd be a knockout (seriously, my dream woman) but because of all the ways it would (and wouldn't) change the plot, the character, and our perception of the character. I've talked about this before too, but I earnestly believe that a "Billie Hargrove" would have survived on the show. She'd be allowed to be a victim (which she is), she'd be allowed to be messy, and fans would be allowed to celebrate her. She'd treated to the slytherin effect. Which is to say that she wouldn't be universally loved, but she would be embraced by a large subset of the culture and championed by the narrative as a face for the "othered community". A bad ass with a heart of gold just waiting for the power of friendship and healing cock to thaw her anti-social ice queen persona. Every edge lord and lady could safely find their representation in her, and Netflix would happily invent new ways to take their money for the privilege, season after season.

If she and Steve were both girls, they'd end up reluctant frenemies, and then best friends by the season finale with a heaping dose of queerbait in between. Because gal pals! lol and if Steve was still a boy Billie would 1000% be trapped in a love triangle (a la Archie, Veronica & Betty) with Steve and Nancy. The good girl would probably win, but I can also the Duffers patting themselves on the back and thinking they really did something by trading in their bland boring endgame couple for the obviously more exciting one.

I didn't even watch "WISH" yet because in my country it will only be available at january, but people are saying it's a bad cliche so I probably won't watch at the cinema.

The thing is, even though I am a hopeless romantic, not everything has to have romance. There are princess who are perfectly fine without a prince, like Mirabel, Elsa, Merida, Moana and Raya(I do kinda like the idea of Raya with a girl, just not Namaari). But we were so robbed of seeing Asha and the star boy(he is literally a staR so I don't doubt Disney would call him StaN or something like that, so his name is Stan from now on, I am gonna call him like that, is easier than star boy). Asha and Stan had the potential to be the next Tianaveen and Rapunzel&Eugene (I don't know their ship name). The concept arts are the cutest thing I have ever seen. Also "At All Costs" (bop) would have been a love song between the two!!! Them singing it man. The pain I will feel when I don't see them passionately sing it, very "I see the light" coded, in the actual movie. Somehow, now is not feminist for a strong female character to have a male partner by her side. Like...This doesn't make sense! You can be a strong female character and have a man at the same time! Have y'all forgotten Mulan and Shang? Anna and Kristoff? Ariel and Eric? Jasmine and Aladdin? (There are more examples and I could go on all day, but you got what I meant already) I hate Disney for throwing good ideas at the trash and playing safe just for money(like Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk said "it's a metaphor for capitalism"). And as the guy looked blonde with blue/green eyes in the arts I have seen, and Asha is a black latina, they lost the opportunity of having a biracial couple ACTUALLY DONE RIGHT (Pocahontas and John Smith don't count, he is a collonizer with the most common name in the world, she deserves so much better). Like, if the thing is show how inclusive you are by having a black latina female protagonist for little girls to see and feel represented in a good way, you could have increased that feeling by making someone fall in love for her. Little girls would feel like they are beautiful and desired/desireable in a positive way and that they worthy of being loved and love and be with whoever they want to be with, even someone who has a different skin color.

I am also mad because we could have seen Disney's first evil villain COUPLE with King Magnifico and his wife, the queen(still don't know her name, sorry). Can't you guys imagine the HITS, THE FIRST PLACE OF BILLBOARD HOT 100 WORTHY songs, they would proportionate us? Even if only one song, it would be enough for me. But someone thought having a female villain would be anti-feminist and they discarded an original and authentic idea, which is what Disney built its empire on the first place. Come on Disney minorities don't want to be portrayed as those unrealistic superior beings, they want to be portrayed as real human beings with emotions, struggles, qualities and flaws. Having an iconic female villain like you guys always had(like Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, Ursula, Mother Gothel, Lady Tremaine, etc) and set her up with an iconic male villain(like Gaston, Doctor Facilier, Shan Yu, Jafar, Hans, etc) it would have been top notch, god tier. King Magnifico and the queen could have been like the Gomez and Morticia of evil. You could address so many topics by it. Like the kingdom being ruled by evil would have been a great social critic of some politicians out there, for example. And we could have had an iconic final boss battle between Asha and Stan VS Magnifico and the queen.

The princess angrily dried her own hair as she looked into the mirror.

As soon as she arrived completely wet in the room, the first thing she did was take a shower and she rubbed her loofah so hard on her body that she didn't know how she hadn't taken off three layers of skin.

And it's all because of Jeno, that idiot.

In her head, she cursed and beat the boy in every possible way.

She tried to get the scene out of her mind as the hot water splashed on her head but it was no use. It was true that Jeno had the power to make her heart beat faster but it was hateful!

As soon as she turned off the dryer, she took a deep breath, staring at her reflection in the mirror. She could no longer give up, falling for Jeno's tricks.

That wasn't why she had come to his kingdom, to indulge in his stupid jokes and show him how much he affected her.

No, she was the future queen. She needed to control herself!

And she would, even if she later had to find a bag of sand to punch until she exhausted her strength.

She needed to draw confidence from where she knew it would come so she turned her gaze to the dresser where she'd kept her clothes.

There was no faster way to gain confidence than that.

She wasn't going to dress casually like before, she was going to dress like a real princess. That's why she chose a dress a little below the knee, in a cream tone with transparent tulle sleeves with a V-neck, the dress marked her waist very well and, simple as it was, it was also elegant.

It was exactly what she needed, she wasn't going to ask her stylist or anyone else on her team for help for two reasons: she liked to get ready by herself once in a while, it was nice to do something for herself without having lots of people around her at all over, and because she had brought the team to set it up for official events only.

Dinner with the Lee family wasn't something that required glamor, although she wanted to clean up her "anti-social" image, she could do it herself.

She just brushed her hair and did a simple makeup, just to disguise her tired face and wore black high heel sandals, she took a few deep breaths before leaving the room.

As she walked through the corridors of the castle she felt her stomach turn with anxiety but she had a confidence that she didn't know where it had come from but was enjoying it, she didn't want to show nervousness to anyone and when arrived in the dining room, she had to hold back her laughter when saw the Lee family looking completely shocked, waiting for dinner to be served.

They certainly hadn't expected her to come.

“Y/N, what a great surprise!” Taeyong spoke, smiling slightly and getting up from his chair to greet her, being followed by the other family members.

Y/N smiled politely and greeted them too, going to the nearest chair and thanked mentally for Haechan being on the side and the Queen on the other, but the happiness quickly passed when she realized that Jeno and Mark sat on the other side right in front of her. But she just lifted her chin, trying not to show how that had affected her.

“I apologize for not joining you for dinner the last few times, I wasn’t feeling well.” she spoke in a friendly tone, looking at Taeyong who indicated for her to sit down.

He did the same and everyone else followed.

“We are happy to be able to enjoy your company now.” the queen replied, placing a hand on her shoulder quickly and the princess smiled gratefully.

“Apparently not just enjoy.” Haechan spoke quietly, averting his head so that only the princess could hear and it worked, as she looked at him confused at the same time. She received an amused smile from the boy and she wanted to roll her eyes playfully but stopped herself.

“Then we can have dinner!” Taeyong announced and without delay, the employees started to serve the food.

The princess felt more comfortable talking to the King and Queen during dinner, all the tension she felt disappeared, giving way only to the anxiety that took over her body every time she felt Jeno or Mark's eyes on her. She didn't reciprocate either because she still didn't know how to look into Mark's kind, almost guilty eyes. As for Jeno, well, she couldn't look at him and not remember what happened at the pool.

Not because her body was bubbling with rage at the childish trick she'd fallen for, but because the image of the wet prince roamed her mind without warrant. She couldn't look at Jeno and not direct her own eyes up to the boy's shoulder and down his chest, even though he was completely dry and in a black dress shirt, all she remembered was the bloody see-through white shirt clinging to his stiff body. The princess didn't notice that she had been staring at his shirt for too long, hoping that it would somehow get wet, and when she saw Jeno smirk and raise an eyebrow at her, she realized that she had been caught red-handed staring at him like he was the dessert.

She took a deep breath and looked away, staring at the queen who was happily talking to her and tried to pay attention to the matter.

Well, at least she tried. Because Jeno couldn't get out of her head and every time she remembered him wet, she took another sip of wine.

She would have gotten drunk if she kept drinking all night and she thanked when Taeyong got up, the others following him as well as Y/N, who took the opportunity to talk with Haechan a little longer in the living room while the King and Queen wished good night to the two.

Jeno and Mark were somewhere in the castle that Y/N wasn't interested in knowing.

“I hate it when they do that.” Haechan rolled his eyes and stretched out on the armchair he was sitting on, next to Y/N.

"What?" she asked, curious.

“They announce to everyone that they are going to try to make an heir in the least subtle way possible.” Haechan stuck out his tongue in mock disgust and Y/N laughed.

“They just retired to their own room.”

Haechan looked at her in disbelief.

“Yeah, and what do you think they're going to do? Play chess?" he asked matter-of-factly and it was her turn to roll her eyes.

"You are thinking too much about what you shouldn't."

"Don't forget that soon it's you." he recalled, smirking at her.

Y/N felt her jaw drop and got up from the chair, throwing a pillow in Haechan's face who started to laugh out loud.

She sure as hell didn't want to think about that right now.

"I won't even bother answering you." she said, angrily heading towards the door. “Good night, Haechan.”

“Dream of my brother.” he chuckled again and as she walked past him she smacked him on the back of the head. "Hey, this is an attack on royalty."

“Go complain to your Navy commander then.” she winked wryly and left the room, hearing Haechan complain.

The princess felt better, the infernal cramps had already passed and, incredible as it seemed, talking with Haechan and even dinner had done her good. That's why she felt partially sad that the night was over so quickly, she didn't think being there was so good, she could almost feel at home really.

She went to her room and got ready for bed, took off her makeup, put on a pastel blue nightgown and turned off the lights, then flopped down on the big bed and took a deep breath as she pulled the sheets over herself.

The princess looked at the ceiling while her mind wandered between Mark and Jeno's faces during dinner, she couldn't say that the situation between her and Mark was a little awkward and as much as she didn't want to seem like she was avoiding the boy, she knew that that's exactly what it showed.

And Jeno… she was tired of remembering the scene of him wet right in front of her, tired of her body warming up on its own just imagining the parallel between reality and the dream that one day she had with him. The deep kiss in the middle of the wild sea. Since then, she seemed to see him differently, she didn't know what it was.

Suppressed desire… maybe?

Y/N widened her eyes when she realized what had gone through her head and snorted, turning to her side and closing her eyes tightly in an attempt to fall asleep as quickly as possible before her mind started playing more tricks.

But that's exactly what happened to her, even unconsciously.

The princess woke up suddenly feeling her body hot as if it were on fire, that nightgown she wore seemed to burn her skin and the room remained the way it was when she went to sleep but her breathing was heavy and she stirred in bed, feeling something between her legs that prevented her from turning over and trying to sleep.

However, when she looked ahead, she came face to face with Jeno and all the breath she had was lost in the same instant that her eyes met his. Jeno looked like a cat, staring at the princess without blinking and in a way she had never seen before.

It was pure lust.

She wanted to ask what he was doing there but when she opened her mouth, the only sound that came out was a loud moan at the sight of what he was wearing. Black pants and an open red blazer, leaving his abs completely exposed.

The room was dark but she could see his perfect skin and it was then that she felt something caress her where she burned the most and she only now found out where it was, she saw Jeno smile mischievously and his eyes shifted from hers to face where he touched her.

The princess followed his eyes and bit her lip as she saw Jeno's long fingers stray inside her nightgown, touching her over her thin panties.

She didn't understand why he was going so slowly, it looked like he wanted to tease her, the room seemed to get hotter and hotter and she didn't understand what was going on but she just knew that she wanted more. Way more.

“Dressed like that, you look like an angel.”

Y/N almost came just listening to Jeno's low, husky voice, so she brought a finger to her mouth and bit down, trying to stifle the moans that continued to escape.

"But we both know you're too naughty to be so angelic." he chuckled and she just stared at him, watching him lift her nightgown to her waist.

She was exposed and she never thought she would like it so much because she knew what would come next, Jeno needed to end that discomfort that came from inside her warm body.

"Let's see if you taste divine." he spoke before parting the princess's legs and bringing his face to the middle, exactly where she needed it most.

Y/N closed her eyes and brought her hands to his hair, felt his breath so close and knew she would feel more… until everything started to get distorted and dark.

She woke up suddenly and completely surprised, she didn't seem to know where she was and made sure she was in the room. Alone.

She looked around and forward in search of Jeno, who wasn't there, it was then that the princess realized where her hand was.

About to touch what Jeno would start eating in her dreams.

Y/N still felt hot and worse, her panties were completely wet, it was embarrassing because the dream had not even been explicit for her to be in that situation. But as in the dream, the nuisance was there.

She took a deep breath and without thinking twice, let her fingers touch her intimacy feeling her whole face burn with shame but she needed that.

That was her dirty secret, she would never share it with someone that she was touching herself while she was thinking about Jeno in that red blazer.

She increased the speed of her fingers as she imagined him licking her until the last drop of her sweetness, the way it should have been if she hadn't woken up, she had to clench her teeth to keep the moan from escaping.

In her mind, Jeno did more than that, he took her to himself completely and when imagining the boy's member inside her, it was enough for her fingers to finish the job. She came, not like she wanted.

The princess looked up at the ceiling again, trying to catch her breath as she thought about how screwed up she was.

That was the first time she had masturbated thinking about Jeno, and by the looks of it, it wouldn't be the last.

But no one would ever know.

7. Fluttershy - Blasphemy I know, but when you keep to yourself in a small cottage by the woods your not exactly the most famous person in the world.

6. Applejack - The apple family ALONE boosts her above fluttershy, seriously they're everywhere.

5. Rarity - I know she's a famous fashion designer but like, how many of you know who Vivian Westwood is? Exactly. Fashion people will know but others won't really care.

4. Rainbow Dash - Famous athlete, legit the fastest pegasus, her popularity will be akin someone like Lionel Messi or Usain Bolt.

3. Twilight Sparkle - Princess of Equestria. Genuine royalty, the reason she's not first is because she's still quite anti social, she's kind, welcoming, and polite, but she'll probably prefer being left alone more then anything else.

2. Spike - Sleeper Pick I swear I'm not bullshitting, Spike will probably have the votes of The Crystal empire, The Dragons and The Changelings that's a whole empire and TWO FUCKING SPECIES.

Mermaid Magic Thoughts

. Visually the show is very pretty. I like a lot of the character designs. Mertropia looks beautiful.

. The transformations are some of the best I've see in a while. I'd give them an 8/10. There are some things I wish where differend, but overall I like them a lot. Their movements are snappy and fluid. (Making a bunch of unnessesary weird looking movements is such a pet peeve of mine when it comes to magical girl tansformations.) The outfits look good. I like that they change into a more practical hairstyle. The song is almost really good. This is just my personal opinion, but I am just not a fan of the more spoken parts (idk how to describe it, is rap the right word for it?). But mostly it's a good gearing-up-to-kick-ass-song. Which is always good during a magical girl tranformation.

. I always like me a good warrior princess. I like that the girls wield these big tridents as weapons. And especially Merlinda gets to actually engage in combat and they're not just shooting sprakling beams out of their hands. It contrasts the whole girlyness of the show nicely. Same with the skeleton pirate villan Barabrossa.

. The characters are....okay. I didn't find any of them particular compelling or interesting. They're not unlikeable, they just don't seem very fleshed out beyond some basic traits and tropes. The girls seem to have a strong friendship and support eachother and I like that Merlinda actually strugelded and doubted herself a lot and needed to be reminded that she's not alone in this.

. Weirdly the characters I found most interesting are Chris and Fred's dad XD. Chris seems really sweet, but seems to be strugling with social pressure. Which already creates an interesting and relatable internal conflict. And if they're going to develop his and Celia's relationship more that could lead to an interesting conflict between the two of them. Since she doesn't seem to be super popular. And Fred's dad just impressed me, 'cause he chose to tell Fred he was working for Barabrossa. Nobody made him do it. It's not like he got caught or anything. He made that decision himself. idk that was just unexpected and immediately made me like him more. I thought he was going to be a one dimensional greedy antagonist.

. Tracy is annoying and boring. If you give me a mean girl antagonist at least make her competend and seem like an actual threat. Tracy is just a brat. It's not even fun to hate her and she doesn't even pose a real challenge to the main characters.

. Why do they have put social media into every kids show now?!?! At least make it seem natural. Just a normal part of daily life instead of a character trait.

. The dialog seems very unnatural at times. I wish they would talk more like normal people.

. That Merlinda/Alex/Tyler love triangle was a waste of screentime. I don't mind a love triangle, but that was just boring.

. This is not a critique of the show's writing, just a personal opinion, but Dave Silver is a terible caretaker. Sir, you need to step up as a father. Your TEENAGE daughter is your accountant and you missed several e-mails from your bank and almost lost your house. You have childred that you need to provide for! Your child should not be worrying about your bills! I know he's a single father and he lost his wife, but come on man! Get your shit toghether!

. I love the magic of friendship trope as much as the next guy, but I was a bit disapointed that that was the source of Merlinda's new power. Everyone seemed surprised by it, I thought there would be a mystery to solve for why she suddenly has this power she didn't know about. Maybe they're going to explore that in season two, but it just seemed anti-climatic here. What did you think of the show?
