okay i keep going on my Marichat bullshit about my miraculous rewrite (which i remember now I still haven't posted because yeaaahhhh i'm editing that bitch, i said i wouldn't but this is my rep on the line, not yours)

but i think I might make it so that, whilst Marichat will ALWAYS prevail, it's THE superior ship, Adrien and Mari do start with Ladrien. Just in a... crushing on an idolised version of someone before I become unmeasurable enamoured with their painfully flawed self

like they enjoy the the model and the superhero and all is well and good, innocent crushes. But they get the truly meaningful connection when Adrien's allowed to kick back and be an ass as Chat, and Mari gets to make mistakes as herself without risking, y'know, lives. They're both stupid idiot weirdos together and they start liking that more than the perfection they previously desired.

Adrien didn't fall in love with Marinette's superhero self on accident. Marinette didn't fall in love with Adrien's civilian self on accident.

Reversing the love square without seriously developing their characters from where they started (or, often, outright changing their characters) is to fundamentally change what the love square is.

Adrien fell in love with Ladybug because he saw her at her most stressed out, where she felt like all eyes were on her and she'd never be able to fix her mistake, and then you know what she did? She picked herself back up and fixed her mistake.

Adrien went to school after that and fixed his mistake, too, by making things right with Marinette.

Marinette fell in love with Adrien because she saw his persistent kindness even after she'd decided she didn't like him. She saw the way he refused to reflect back the worst of her and decided to do the same. She made things right, too, by not judging him based on their first impressions (not to mention how that likely impacted her relationships with Chloé and Kagami).

They fell in love with the person they needed the most. The one they needed to be more like. If you change who they initially fell in love with, you change a fundamental part of why they fell in love, and you fundamentally change the love square.

But some of y'all aren't ready for that talk.

‘ladrien cant work because they put each other on the pedestial’ okay then, what if you create situations where they both are being ‘themselves’, create narratives where they have to confront this fact, or talk about it in adrien’s room or a rooftop while chewing on a croissant or four? (as ladrien not as other sides). they could still rediscover each other, fall in love again, be the bffs they are and be silly and stupid and angsty anything the writer/artist/etc wants them to be.

 fanworks is all about creating scenarios and conflicts and working with it, not necessarily adhering to canon. ‘they put each other on a pedestial’ is nothing but a person putting a boundary, an excuse, to not wanting to explore them further and, frankly, i find it to be v feeble. like damn that statement right there is a baseline to build something on, not the conclusion

i absolutely do not hate marichat. i’m a love square girly this i was fucking screaming this whole episode. we should all be fucking celebrating rn

if you’re seeing any negativity from me it has nothing to do with the episode. i fucking loved this episode. but it’s super unfortunate that every time we get some great marichat content the worst of the stans come out in droves. they’re the stans who go into the ladrien tag to shit on ladrien. they’re the ones spouting off nonsense about authenticity and true selves and act like they’re morally superior even though the show has shown us time and again that true selves is bullshit. i’m baffled by the stans who are now saying they’ve been the underdog and hated side for years but they showed us like- hello?????? marichat is the most popular side of the love square it pulls the biggest numbers.

marichat is fucking choice content. ladynoir is fucking choice content. adrinette is fucking choice content. ladrien is fucking choice content.

i’m just someone who has been here for a v long time and has watched some rabid stans constantly shit on a side i really enjoy and who are coming into that tag today to do the same. you can’t escape it on any platform so i’ve been v confused by this narrative popping up over the last week. my block list is ever growing just so i can keep enjoying love square content without all the stupid takes clogging my feed.

No, we are NOT back to square one

I know most fans are frustrated with the love square being reversed cus it seems everything is back to square one, but it really isn't. Marichat has always been the step closer to resolving the convoluted love square!

The problem with the original status quo (aka Ladrien) was that they were only in love with idealized versions of each other. Marinette was infatuated with the charming, kind and handsome classmate who seemingly has no flaw, and Adrien was in love with a hero whom he put on a pedestal. NOW, these idealized images are broken. Adrien realizes Ladybug doesn't trust him enough as an equal and he needs to come into his own, Marinette realizes she doesn't actually know Adrien that well and has just been making a fool out of herself. Here comes what makes Marichat so damn good.

Even before the love square switched, their relationship was already superior. Outside of the suit, Marinette can be herself and joke around especially with her partner. Adrien has always felt more free as Chat, plus he doesn't feel pressured around Marinette. Their interactions as Marichat are pure gold — joking around, play fighting, hanging out, literally best friends in a way they can't be as other ships in the love square. They truly get each other as Marichat, and now that they have feelings for each other, we KNOW it's not the "new ladrien".

Marinette doesn't have an idealized image of Chat Noir in her head. She knows his flaws, his bad puns, his carefree nature, his endless flirting — all the reasons she didn't like him cus he's "not like Adrien", but now that she does have feelings for Chat, that means she's slowly learning what real love is — loving a whole person, flaws and all. She has now loved all sides of Adrien Agreste.

Adrien simply didn't like Marinette before because she was too shy around him, the one who always runs away. The Marinette around Chat? Sassy, bossy, chaotic mess and that endears him to no end. "Ladybug" is never a klutz and has to have everything under control, but "Marinette" is anything but. He now loves the part of her she has always been ashamed of, thus has loved all of Marinette Dupain-Cheng too.

LadyNoir may never be the same, but this change in dynamic can be good! Chat can focus less on what Ladybug thinks of him and Ladybug will learn to be less of a boss and more of a partner. Besides, it would be nice to see Ladybug's shy flirting just go over an oblivious Chat's head.

What does annoy me though is how Mari still thinks Chat is in love with her (like girl IT'S YOU AS THE KLUTZY TEENAGER) so I'm hoping in future eps we get Chat flirting w/ Marinette and yall I shit you not I WILL die when he does.

Take it from someone who has been here for 7 years and stopped watching mid season 3. My faith is renewed!

as a marichat stan i am v attached to the idea of them falling for each other twice and realizing later that it was the same love all along. that just feels like a very complete, full-circle approach to the love square that is very meaningful and narratively satisfying to me. but i think one of my biggest takeaways from ephemeral is that i just love every version of a reveal that ends in them being happy together—whether it's a half reveal first and then a full reveal, whether it's accidental or on purpose, whether there's a period of prpr or an immediate kiss, whether it comes before or after reverse crush has been developed, whether either of them are "ready" or not. because in the end, no matter the circumstance, marinette and adrien will always love each other and be happy post reveal, and they have their whole lives to get to know each other even better and grow together

(that being said, i am still very partial to the exact reveal scenario we got in ephemeral lol ladrien half reveal + marinette freakout™️ and mandatory processing time for 5–10 business days + adrien being surprised for a total 1.4 seconds before succumbing to Ultimate Simpery.....truly that's a superior form of reveal and i feel so blessed to have seen it in canon skjlfdasjk)
