loved the lil walk with rui. i love that dude i wish we could have seen him before he was cursed. the bittersweet "i used to do that all the time" when he was talking about researching his curse 😭 can we cure him too please

this was funny as hell no way does haku have dad energy, he has jealous energy

these two lines honestly just feed into my theory that it's a very understated staff vs ghouls atmosphere (not so understated i guess) and that haku is working for them. traitor 😔

RUI IS ONTO HIM. haku always just knows when to appear, huh? and this isn't the first time, we run into haku everywhere. why is he always out walking? what is he looking for? rui might know, he's in the shadows after all.

i am genuinely curious about the wisteria taking people though. why would they mention that? what does that have to do with anything? is it only certain people?

would love to know why subaru interrupted zenji like that, even mc noticed that was out of character for him. i get the feeling there's more to this place and subaru's past then he let on, but it could also have just been a throwaway red herring line to get us to be more suspicious of the subaru stuff that was going to be revealed later. but honestly my main concern is that zenji and jiro have not only never been to a museum, but they've never been to an amusement park 😭 let them have fun!!! let me take them out!!

haku being insistent on the folk tale channel is interesting, though i'm not sure if it was just to show character traits or if it's actually for the plot. sometimes dialogue is just dialogue, ya know? weird that haku had him record a folk tale so insistently and then never tell us which tale. sus 🤨

this chapter also seems to spend a lot more time on the interaction between the ghouls, which im not mad about. it's always fun to see how the writers balance the mission and also character development. love a good monster of the week show.

honestly the more this whole subaru thing goes on i really don't think he's suspicious so much as he's just so terrified of losing control that it's become an obsession.

my whole take on the subaru thing centers around anxiety and poor coping mechanisms. i'm hesitant to say it's ocd because of how mental illness is usually portrayed in horror media, but it definitely feels like the anxious spirals that kind of cycle on obsession. especially once it comes out about the scandal he was supposedly involved in. if you already have anxiety about how you're perceived and something like that happens on such a major scale that you have to step away from the public eye, (and especially after doing something like losing control) it's not a huge leap to think it'd almost become a trigger response. especially the cabbage on the burger part on the table--you see reactions like that all the time. i won't go into a full psychoanalysis, as i'm not a psychology expert, but that's how it reads to me. so far. he's still on my list lmao

Not me immediately thinking about Fig and Riz's relationship and assuming that Fig is the friend who would have to ask "hey are you mad at me?" When she feels like she's done something wrong

In my head I'm thinking after the events of season 2 Fig starts to pull back a little bit from Riz because she feels like she's an asshole for having three cool dads and sisters and then a step brother and more family on the way...but Riz just has his mom. he then groaned hearing leehan complain about being on bathroom duty for the 84th time that day, just then the bell rang shooting sungho to his feet. he ran to the bathroom and closed the door so you couldn't see, or hear leehan complain while cleaning the bathroom. riwoo opened the door for you only to be shoved away

"MY BABY" he cooed out to you before wrapping his arms around you making you laugh as you returned the hug "hi sungie" you mumbled against the hug. in the corner of your eye you saw riwoo rolling his eyes at sungho and leehan peeping out from the corner, you wave and say your hello's and they said there's and quickly welcomed you to their dorm. sungho brought you over to the couch to rest as riwoo put away your bags and leehan got you a glass of water (after he washed his hands...)

that was the second thing he noticed about you, how talkative you were, to which he was not complaining. the second he heard your voice he wanted to replay it each second he could. he listened to each word you said with detail and understanding as if he was the one traveling.

hating the taste in your mouth you furrow your brows "wow, you have...different taste"

"can i tell you something?" he said swallowing his drink

"i dont know where this place is...nor have i ever drunk from here

you both tried to follow the google maps leading to the beauty store but with the bad data, you two realized after 30 minutes that the map was leading you guys in circles. deciding to get back onto the subway to seoul, the city where he was familiar with so he can actually take you to a beauty store.

the subway was empty besides sungho and you sitting by each other in a random seat chatting away. sungho knew he was probably oversharing with a person that he met just today but it was something about you that drew him into to place that he had never felt familiar with

comfort, and sure maybe he used to preach about love at first sight being dumb and a stupid concept but, he understood it now. and the proof was sitting right in front of him

as you two got to the beauty store you started to get the products you needed since your day started but hours later. sungho memorized each product you had gotten in case you ever told him you needed or lost the product. you fought him off at the checkout managing to pay this time, but he swore to himself that hopefully if you guys keep in touch, you'll never have to pay for anything again unless he's there.

the day started to get dim and sungho agreed (begged) to drop you off. the sunset watched you and sungho as you both were walking. time seemed to move too quickly, that or either you and him were very fast walkers. he dropped you off at the front of your hotel, before you got too far he grabbed your wrist causing you to turn around "do you think i can call you tonight?"

"thats such a corny way to ask for someone's number" you joke looking at him before handing your phone to him. when you finally exchange numbers that's when he watches you leave and stay until he sees you go into the elevator, sungho continued to walk to the dorms with a big smile on his face as he replayed his day, your voice, your jokes, your face, just you. something about you amused him, whether it was your personality, jokes, or anything about you seemed to have him wrapped around your finger

as soon as he gets back to the dorms his face is painted with a big frown, his cheeks hurt too much from smiling and laughing today that he thought he couldn't anymore.

oat is so insightful, bc girl is out there flirting and makes a cocktail that is called SILVER LINING. i didn't expect anything less of kawi tbh, even after nene's "advice", but as weeks passes, all i think is how much this man is bottling up and it won't take that long for him to spill. kawi is a ticking bomb and he won't get that therapy soon enough me thinks.

i want to say something thats been bugging me for a while but there was this whole argument about katara and zuko being FUNDAMENTAL in each other's character arc and that baffled me because its simply not true? you can say they play an important role but to say they are fundamental is over exaggerating it. as fundamental at least to me inherently implies they are the foundation for each others arcs. like it got me sooo confused because i in no way see how zuko plays such a role for katara and same with zuko. because did we just forget that uncle iroh is the one thats actually fundamental to zuko? i feel like i never see him get talked about by these "zuko fans" unless its from a book with like one or two short sentences thats very clearly uncle iroh being a stereotypical dad and being like "oh a nice girl maybe good for zuko?" as if he wasn't pushing zuko to bring home a girl and getting him to go on a date with that girl in ba sing se idk to me it reads off as a parent thats just yappin lol

regardless of that though, im still baffled by that. katara isnt fundamental to zuko's character arc, uncle iroh is. zuko isnt fundamental to katara's character arc, her mother is (and i'd argue aang but i feel like that would just cause a shipping mess by even breathing his name lmao) anyways sorry but that still gets me to this day because how utterly confusing i found it. no one was even saying that they didn't play an important (role along with the other characters in the gaang) in each others arcs, it was saying they simply are not fundamental and that, for some reason, made them so mad lol

I'm sorry, anon, but I am saying they were not important to each other's character arcs, and this is taking into account my bias as someone who really likes their friendship. If a character is not around for someone's arc, or on their mind during it, they're not relevant to said arc.

Katara canonically saw him as nothing but the generic face for evil Fire Nation people until their talk in Ba Sing Se - only to then immediately regret her moment of empathy towards him and never mention him again. And as I've already said, that moment meant so little to Zuko that he couldn't even understand why Katara was mad.

They don't start interacting for real until Zuko the second of half of the final season, and they're not friends until the show is TWO EPISODES AWAY from the finale.

In The Southern Raiders, Zuko is basically the guy driving the taxi so Katara goes on her revenge quest. This doesn't hold a candle to the three seasons she spent being supported by the Gaang (or two in Toph's case), always thinking about her family, mainly her mom.

In the Last Agni Kai, Katara is just there to take action when it's time to shout MEDIC! This doesn't hold a candle to Ozai and Azula's shadow constantly hanging over him, Iroh's advice, the memory of his mother, his relationship with Mai, and the simple "Maybe we could have been friends" from Aang that was canonically haunting Zuko for months because it got to him that much.

Now, do I think it's possible, and very likely, that they will be very important in each other's lives from that point onwards? Of course! They ARE friends now, and if someone is in your life they're gonna play some kind of role when you're going through stuff. It's only natural.

But in the actual canon events? No, they were not important to each other's arc. They didn't have the opportunity to be - and that is part of why I wish the show had 4 seasons instead of 3, or that the comics had not sucked. It would've been so nice to see Aang not be the only member of the Gaang that plays a major role in Zuko's arc, and vice versa (especially with Toph, not only because I love their friendship but because she was denied a life-changing field trip).

Skandar and the unicorn thief chapter one discussion

Warning: Probably spoilers

Okay so, first of all I love this first chapter for many reasons. It introduces so many ideas and does a decent job of introducing Skandar and his family situation.

First of all, his dad having depression and not having a job and this causing them to be fairly poor. And also leading to Skandar's problems with Owen and his lack of friends. Now, I want to make this clear before I continue, I am not, in any way, trying to villainise the dad. It seems clear to me that he is supposed to have depression, whether it's diagnosed or not. But he's also the only parent Skandar and Kenna have, and, while they do have grandparents, the grandparents can't be there to take care of the dad, and so it falls to the children. And this leads to the children sometimes caring for their dad over their own self care.

On top of that we have Kenna, Skandar's sister. So I can't talk much about this, because it's not my experience, but this feel like what smart kid or golden child burnout is. There were a lot of expectations that Kenna would succeed and go on to have a unicorn of their own, and so, when she failed the exam, she not only missed out one her dream, but she also failed to meet those expectations and its probably the combination of these making her feel even worse. Especially if the dad was really driving home the idea that this, having a unicorn rider in the family, would fix all their problems, particularly with money. I don't know if the dad meant to put this much pressure on her but the pressure exists anyway. Honestly when it comes to Kenna, two songs immediately come to mind, Surface Pressure from Encanto and Top of my school by Katherine Lynn Rose.

And then you have Skandar, trying to navigate both of these situations, trying so hard not to say the wrong thing, and not always succeeding because he's still a kid who sometimes speaks without thinking, and a fairly awkward one, at that. Side note: him talking about the comments people make and how he only thinks of responses too late when the moment's already passed, yeah, most relatable shit I've ever read. Same, bestie. Also i really like Skandar and Kenna. They're both kids in a difficult situation, trying their best. Skandar, especially. Like, he does not deserve this bullying. I know Owen's a kid too, but honestly, fuck Owen. This is an anti bullying page. Especially cyber bullying. Only cowards bully people and that goes double for cyber bullying. Also, I do feel sorry for Kenna, being told her whole life this was her destiny and then having it ripped away from her. And honestly, there's a good chance that was because they worried she'd be a spirit weilder.

But also, the book specifically telling us Kenna favoured fire unicorns, but Skandar could never pick a favourite? I see you, book, hinting that there might be more to it.

Ties nicely in to the end of the chapter where the Weaver steals New Age Frost and the mainlanders don't know who the Weaver is and they say the mainland can't see this. Just does a great job telling us there's also more to the Island, things they're purposely hiding from the Mainland. I just love it. It feels like nothings wasted. Even the bit about the mum, Rosemary goes to show why they want this so much, why Skandar wants this so much.

Also this isn't about the chapter but the Island is my Hogwarts. You know Harry Potter fans joke about missing their Hogwarts letter and being disappointed? Well im disappointed I missed my unicorn exam. Am I scared of heights? Yes. Will I overcome this if it means I get a unicorn of my own? Yes, even if these unicorns are vaguely terrifying.

Also, can we just agree that when it comes to magic, going by elements is better? Whether it's the four elements, water, fire, earth air, or some extra ones added, like I believe I've seen light and dark and stuff, it's just a cool system, especially if your affinity doesn't stop you using other elements, just makes it harder. Like, just yes. If magic is natural in your world, like its a part of nature, then it should be based on a natural things. By the way when I say light and dark in this case, I don't mean good and bad, I mean liter light and dark.

As for my personality it really depends on the atmosphere and how long I’ve known someone but naturally when we just meet I’m extremely awkward, I don’t go out of my way to greet or talk to people, I usually hide or talk to anyone else in the room, plus I might find an excuse to leave early because of how low my social battery is. When I’m a little closer I’ll start being physically affectionate, of course if the friend allows it, not too much though, but it’ll still be noticeable. Speaking about physical affection that’s one of my main love languages, I am the type of friend to hug or kiss my friends on the forehead, if they’re comfortable of course! Additionally I tend to stim too much, I have a hard time controlling my vocal chords so I might appear like I’m yelling, and sometimes, if I’m in an extremely good mood, I’ll feel like I’m high off of happiness. I know I’m not high but it’s the best way to put it,y cheeks turn red I get all giddy and giggly, I run around the room, I like touching stuff with textures rub my face on it and spin around, it’s just pure hyperactivity. I already mentioned this but since I have a small social battery I might need a lot of space? Like me time. Otherwise things get too overwhelming and I shut down, I might cry even. Me time can vary depending on how long I’ve spent outside the house, like if I spent a few days with someone 3-4. I probably wouldn’t make any plans for another week and a few days. The last thing I feel like I should mention is im a little sensitive, I might not exactly cry but I’ll get hurt by a lot of things.

When the two of you meet, admittedly, it's a little awkward. Clark was used to being quiet, unassuming Clark Kent, and as you mentioned, you don't go out of your way to engage with new people. And Clark wouldn't want to pressure you, he can see how uncomfortable you are, and he understands that some people just didn't like strangers, simply because they were strangers.

But then the two of you keep meeting, and gradually, you start growing more comfortable around him. Part of this is due to Bruce, who he had gotten used to stealing away when the other hero got too uncomfortable in a situation, and had unintentionally taught him how to spot when someone's social battery was getting low, even if they were forcing themselves not to show it in any obvious ways. So he would guide you away with a comforting hand on your shoulder, and make quiet excuses for you, saying how he needed you to help him with this or that thing, how he was very sorry but it just couldn't wait. If you needed to be alone, in order to recharge your social battery before the next bit of interaction, he would run interference, making sure you had time to recuperate. Half the time he just sicced Jon on them, because his son would also be very fond of you and look up to you as an older sibling, even if he realizes he's your sibling before Clark realizes he's your Dad.

As for sensory issues and being a picky eater or being picky in regards to clothes, Clark has so much experience in this you have no idea. Even if his own children didn't struggle with textures, which they do with both Conner and Jon being ADHD which they inherited from him, he struggled a lot with textures as a kid himself. Granted, part of it was due to super senses overwhelming him before he had gotten his invulnerability, but still. Sensory overload is hell, and he is aware of it. He goes out of his way to try and memorize what textures you enjoy, and which ones you don't like.

I think the first time he realizes how fond he is of you, and that you are absolutely his kid, is the first time you openly show excitement and enthusiasm in front of him. I could see Conner teaching you guitar, or maybe the two of you playing together with you playing the piano while Conner plays the guitar and this man is just- big feelings. Big feelings he has no idea what to do with because those are his kids and he loves them so much he thinks he might die from how strong it is.

He absolutely gets you blankets with texture you like too, and various stim toys. He may accidentally steal one, though, be warned.

I honestly see him as being the sort of person to try and learn more about where you were raised. Does this mean he will be trying to learn Arabic? Yes. Is he very good at it at first? No. Does he have a best friend who's son is more than willing to insult him if it meant he got better at speaking Arabic? Yes, even if Damian could afford to be a little less mean about it.

Another good thing is that Clark is pretty much the ideal for if you feel you cry or get upset easy. He's able to actually communicate his emotions, unlike some (*cough* Batman *cough*) and he knows how to make himself seem less intimidating.

All in all, cool dad. Even as a platonic yandere, he would be pretty chill, although there's more kidnapping involved

"Wow, you sleep here?!" Belladonna went to Jim's Birthday party at Goth Mansion. The moment she knocked on the immense door she feared the woman whi kicked her out the other night would answer again, but a very happy Jim came to answer instead. He was a little perplexed that little Belladonna came alone since he had invited her family. "They are busy. Work, you know..." she adds. Jim apologize for the absence of her own parents. His mother is busy entertaining a friend, while his father is away for work. So that's what dad says when he comes to see me and nana, thinks Belladonna, He lies to his other family to see us... In Jim (and his brother's) gigantic room Belladonna feels very poor and even a bit angry. This could have been her life, yet she lives in a house where she doesn't even have her own room. But Jim doesn't know anything about it, he just wants to correct his mother's behavious and maybe make some friends. Belladonna can't really be mad at Jim for their mother's sins. "Yeah, I suppose it's a big bedroom..." says Jim. Belladonna gives Jim his present. It is his birthday after all, she had to bring him a gift. Of course she didn't really have any money to buy stuff, and she didn't tell her granny any of this (she just lied and told her she was going to play at the park in Oasis Spring). So the only thing she could offer was a very cool frog. Jim doesn't seem to mind, he cheerfully accept the gift and Belladonna feels she can maybe trust this older half-brother with a bit of truth.

"Jim, I have to tell you something. It's a long story, tho.'.." "It's okay, apparently all my so-called friends decided to go see my brother duel in the Magic Realm instead of coming to my party..." says Jim, sadly. "Magic Realm?? Is your brother a spellcaster?!" asks Belladonna without restrains. "Yes, as I am." "No way! Me too!" shouts Belladonna. Then she slaps her forehead "But of course you are, because our mother is a spellcaster too!". Belladonna stops. She said too much, perhaps. She didn't mean to blurt it out like that, she wanted the news to build in a climax, but Jim is already looking at her with wide-open eyes. "Our mother?" whispers Jim. Belladonna starts telling everything she knows, trying to put a start and an end to her tale. But it's not easy. She does tell im that Stormy doesn't know her to be her daughter, and that can only mean she never gave birth to her. Still, Belladonna understood she is her biological mother, since she is very sure Alexander is her father. She tries to tell Jim about her grandmother Bella, but the boy doesn't seem to know her at all and claims to have never even heard of her name before. "But she was the original owner of this mansion!" exclaims Belladonna, incredully "How come dad has never talked about his own mother to you or your brother?" "Mother isn't exactly the most reasonable when we ask about the previous owners of the house, especially lately..." says Jim reluctantly, then he adds "And now I know why. Belladonna, you are the rightful owner of our dad's fortune!" Belladonna didn't expect Jim to take the news in such a serene way. "I guess, but I don't really care about the money... I'm more interested in the spellcaster side of the family!" "I can't believe my mother could be so wicked!" snaps Jim suddenly. "But you are safe if she is still convinced you are Cassandra's daughter. You see, our dad, Alexander, he was like... well, a dad to me and my brother. And yes, we know we are not his biological sons, but he never really made us fell anything less than his own sons!" says Jim, and Belladonna can be how moved he is by their father's generosity. Then Jim sits at the desk, he seems absorbed in some tought. Then turns to Belladonna: "Since your powers will be showing soon, would you like to see the Magic Realm?"

also yes, im so glad you asked!!! finally sum1 to infodump to lmao (also stuff abt the rest of the main cast just for funzies. i put it under a cut bcus it got long lol):

raph + his family live in an abandoned train yard on the very outskirts of the city

raph's family consists of his sister, mike, his two brothers, leon and don, and his dad, yoshi

from oldest to youngest: splinter (late 40s), casey (19), april (18), raph (17), leon + mike (15), and don (14)

mike and leon are twins! and spotted turtles. it's hard to tell them apart if you don't know what to look for, or if they're playing a prank on someone

leon has chronic pain in his knee from his mutation

don is mute, he uses tts and sign language to talk. he's also the only one of his siblings with four fingers on each hand

mike owns a drum kit but nobody knows where she got it from. leon asked once, but she just told him not to worry about it (he is, in fact, very worried about it)

don's dream is to "engineer the world's awesome-est automobile ever"

mike is the prankster of all pranksters and nobody is safe from her wrath, not even leon (especially leon tbh)

raph plays violin. splinter taught him

leon can be a real hard-ass when it comes to sticking to the rules, but that's only if mike isn't around

don and mike are both STEM kids with a love for cooking/baking. if you can't find them in their rooms, you'll probably find them in their make-shift lab-slash-kitchen. just...try not to breathe in through your nose too much if you're in there. the smells tend to mix badly

yoshi's eyesight was already really bad when he was a human, but it got worse after he was mutated

don wears glasses, raph has braces, leon has a tooth gap, and mike has two missing front teeth

yoshi taught judo classes while he was in college

the turtles met april when they were out roof-hopping and mike tripped and fell down into an alleyway...and right on top of april. the only saving grace was that april was getting mugged at the time and mike ended up scaring away the mugger

april is thai/african american

yoshi worked as a wildlife veterinarian before he was mutated

april works part-time at her dad's restaurant as a delivery driver and part-time at a local liquor store

mike sometimes visits april at her dad's restaraunt, which april hates because she's afraid someone will notice her and which mike loves because she gets to hang out around tons of people

april and casey actually knew each other when they were kids, but only casey remembers

casey never takes off his mask, even when he's sleeping; at least from what the turtles have seen. mike once joked that it was part of his actual face but none of them can be sure...

the turtles go dumpster diving whenever they visit the city. they also scrounge around in the nearby junkyard whenever it gets a new influx of trash

casey is cuban/native canadian

raph is terrified of insects. don, on the other hand, loves them

casey's duffel bag is filled with tons of essential items along with all of his other stuff. nobody is sure how he fits it all in there, but he somehow manages with room to spare

casey works full-time as a janitor at one of the colleges in the city and does art commissions on the side

the turtles, yoshi, casey and april have game night on friday and movie night on saturday

casey and raph met a year before the main story starts

yes, casey and raph have destroyed, defaced, and defecated on private property and they will do it again

Re: the tags of that post you just reblogged from me - AU where Steve and Eddie swap roles for just the final fight (Eddie’s with the girls, Steve’s with Dustin) but with an added subplot where we meet Steve’s parents early in the season & maybe they’re trying to get him to grow up/move out/think about his future, or something else, but they’d have to feature somehow so we still get that ending scene except it’s Robin telling his parents he didn’t make it (im picturing a very tragic recontextualising around the phrase “you need to do something with your life” leading to Steve drawing the bats away from Dustin)

That’s just my quick thoughts though, I’d love to know how you’d do it!

I think there are for sure many versions of this plotline that could work BUT here goes nothing

I definitely agree that we'd need to introduce Steve's parents early on (in my ideal world we'd have met them sooner than s4 for this plotline but alas I'm not in charge I'm simply posthumously script doctoring) and I think one version of the conversation there could come from a place of wanting what's best for him, but centering itself around ambition and choice in a way that sticks with Steve.

"You had so much ambition when you were still in school, Steve-- all of your sports, how sociable you were-- what happened to that? Where did you lose that along the way?"

And Steve flounders a little bit, because he's gotten to the point after season 3 where he can see himself better from the outside, is just that touch more self aware and good at reading not just other people's feelings but his own.

So it takes him a beat to put it into words, but he's able to, is the thing--

"Maybe I don't need to go down the-- the usual path to end up where I want to end up."

"Is this where you want to end up?" his mother asks, "working at a video store for the rest of your life?"

"It's not about that," Steve shrugs, pouring two travel mugs of coffee all the while, one for him and one for Robin.

Because he knows it's not about that, he spent all of last summer learning it's not about that and the months since discovering that there's a certain amount of peace in knowing that things aren't perfect but that matters less when you have your people around.

"What's it about then? Steve, I just-- I don't want you to get stuck here, when I know you could do so much more with your life if you just chose to."

"I'm not doing nothing with my life, Mom!" he laughs, exasperated but certain for once in his goddamn life. "I'm-- I'm actually doing really well right now, I've got good friends and I've got the kind of job where I'm kept busy while I figure out what's next for me and I'm just... happy, I guess? Like, can't my ambition just be to keep doing stuff that makes me happy? Can't I choose that?"

And he has to go to work, has to walk out and promise her that they'll talk about it more later, talk about it with his dad too, but Steve knows what he cares about and this isn't going to shake his resolve.

What he cares about is this group of people who have changed his life even more than the monsters did, who brought enough good into it to at the very least match the bad, and in some cases (like the girl already monologuing as she climbs into the front seat of his car and accepts her coffee with a mocking kiss to his cheek) somehow usurp the bad.

Steve doesn't have to be what this town expects of him, what most likely to end up rich superlative voters expect of him, what his parents expect of him, because his life isn't about being any particular something, it's in the doing.

It's in the swinging of a baseball bat, the swinging of his fists to keep the people he loves safe.

It's in the morning drives to get Robin to school on time and the late night ones to make sure Dustin meets curfew.

It's in the friendship he's managed to find with Nancy in the past year, the knowledge that this version of them is the best one by far.

It's in the days driving the kids to the trailer park to visit Max even if she ultimately ends up refusing to come out with them, because at least they're doing it, at least they're trying with her.

It's in this, too, when they drive out to Reefer Rick's place and some of the claims of happiness start slipping through Steve's fingers again with the proof that it isn't over, the fight.

But they've beat it before and they can beat it again. It's in the doing, and Steve has gotten knocked down many a time but the thing he always does is he always gets up on the other side.

He knows this. He trusts in this. He's built a fucking worldview around this because that's where his ambition went, Mom.

That's what happened to "Steve Harrington, actually a cool dude."

Steve's humble enough to thank Eddie for saving his ass, but he's done this enough times to still be able to reassure the guy who calls him badass that, "It always looks hopeless right before we win. Don't freak out too bad if it looks like the end of the world, huh?"

Eddie looks at him like he has two heads, says he's jealous of Steve's optimism.

Even Robin tells him that she thinks they might not win this time but all Steve knows is that they always have before. All Steve knows is that his instincts usually work out, let him protect the rest of them long enough to make the big and vital moves necessary to beat this thing.

All Steve knows is that he just, he's changed a lot but-- He's just the same kid who was cocky enough to run back into the Byers' house to fight a monster, stubborn enough to let the Russian's beat the hell out of him before he'd let them do the same to Robin and he--

"I don't know, I still have hope. Maybe this is the first time we actually win. Forever."

There's this sense of finality to it, hanging in the air, and she doesn't look convinced there in the same way she doesn't look convinced when he and Dustin are saying goodbye to the other three at Eddie's trailer, but Steve kisses her once on the forehead and says, "what are you waiting around for? Go kick some ass, your schmuck will be here when you're done."

His instincts have always protected them in the past.

It's his instincts that have him formulating a plan the second he realizes the bats are going to get inside the trailer, going to make a break for the gate and attack whole swaths of people unprepared for such a thing.

Dustin will be mad about being abandoned on the other side, but Steve's pissed him off before and he's always gotten over it.

It's in the doing, his ambition.

It's in the doing, the key to a well-spent life.

It's in the doing, the being of Steve Harrington, overconfident nature and all.

He always gets back up, every knock to the head and blow to the ego, Steve always gets back up, so he holds his ground and fights. Leads the bats away and keeps them there.

His mother wasn't wrong that he's changed, but she wasn't right when she claimed the thing he'd lost was his ambition. He'd found it, this force of nature in his chest that makes him willing to face down hell if it means the people he loves are safe.

He always gets back up, a tail around his throat.

He always gets back up, teeth in his flesh.

Steve Harrington is a pro at getting knocked down.

"I'll get up in a second, just-- just a second--"

"Steve there's-- there's so much blood-- Steve, you need to-- you have to get up now--"

"It's okay, it's okay, we won, just-- just another minute. Wanna see that-- Rob and the others made it back. Then we--can go--"

Dustin is crying. Dustin is holding him.

And Steve is bleeding out, he thinks somewhere indistinct and hazy at the back of his mind. He'll get up and fix that in a minute.

"You die, I die! Hey, hey motherfucker! Don't close your eyes-- you die, I die, you hear me?!"

It's in the doing, really, that Steve does as he's told just long enough to see the other three come stumbling out of the tree line towards them.

It's in the doing, in the choice of it, that he dies knowing they won.

(His mother wails when Robin approaches her at the shelter two days later with sunken eyes and unwashed hair. His father sinks into the closest chair and takes the offered keys to a maroon BMW with trembling hands.)

(It's in the doing that this time, in order to really win, they have to cling a little bit to his hope.)
