#'are chinese people racist?'

I really am preaching to the choir because this is fucking tumblr and westerners, esp americans, love to project their situation to the rest of the world, but no, even though there is racism in China (I mean duh, it's a big fucking country, not all people are nice), it is neither systemic, nor is it the same sort of thing as in Western countries. For example the whole "colorism" thing that people here keep harping on about. Yes, tanned people (notice! NOT "dark skinned", but TANNED, as in you are lighter skinned but became tanned due to exposure to sunlight) were seen as lower class, because way back then only farmers and hard laborers worked under the sun, but this is more of a thing within Han Chinese people themselves. In other words, this supposed "racism" actually doesn't have much to do with racism at all, it's a CLASSIST thing. Now I'm not saying classism is good, but I'm just pointing this out so people can stop calling Han Chinese culture "racist" when they know jack shit about it.
And anyway, you looking tan in China doesn't mean people won't hire you for jobs or people will be prejudiced against you or whatever. That is NOT A THING. My grandpa is literally brown skinned (there are brown skinned Han Chinese people btw, also some Han Chinese have very wavy almost curly hair too, like my cousin, and many have the "double lid", like my uncle, some even have pointy noses, like my grandma's family), and guess what? He had a respectable job, he made a good living, retired with a house, elderly mother, wife, kids, grandkids, was well liked, and had a lot of friends. My mother also has very tanned skin and she was a well-respected teacher. Again your skin color really isn't a huge deal in China because Chinese people have a wide range of skin colors and physical features already. We are NOT all "light skinned with dark eyes and dark straight hair". NO. And we are fine with having a range of physical features.
Alright now that the misconception has been addressed, let's talk about the kind of racism that does exist. From my experience, most of the racism towards black people are IMPORTED. Yes, imported, from the West. The kind of racist things some people say are literally the same as what you might hear in the american south. Now, although they say the same things, the root is still different. White americans are racist towards black people because of skin color and race, and because it's systemic, it has kept many black people poor. Now in China, some people say the same things NOT because they "don't see black people as people", it's because they see that black people are generally poor in the West and they thought it's because "these people don't work hard enough", when in reality it's the system in Western society working against black people. Again, it's more of a CLASSIST thing, and actually has less to do with either colorism or racism, but more with ignorance of the situation in countries far far away from China. Many Chinese people don't really understand how racism towards black people are systemic in countries like the us because there has never been anything similar in China ever. Obviously there are exceptions who are actual racists (and it's not a coincidence that these exceptions are usually people who had lived in Western countries and who sought white validation while they lived in the West by trying to act and think like white people), but let me repeat again, in China in most cases it's a CLASSIST thing.

White dungeon meshi fans sound like this to me:
Tumblr media
It's extremely fascinating and frightening to me how hateful some of you people are towards shuro, a man who is clearly depicted as japanese, (a man who could look like me or literally any member of my family in real life) for being a normal, complex, and flawed human being.
Why do you single him out for getting frustrated with and mad at laios when chilchuck and marcille do the same literally all the time? What's the difference between them and shuro?
Why do you feel the unnecessary need to protect these white women from a japanese man?
Do you expect that this japanese man is inherently going to have some kind of ugly negative quality that has not been once hinted at canonically? Do you know what that's called? Because i do and it's fucking racism.
You people get scared the moment a character that is a person of color isnt a quiet little model minority or a sweet mammy archetype. You grasp at your pearls the moment they are revealed to have complex personalities and histories; when they feel negative, big emotions that are literally part of the human experience. Or god forbid, when they show romantic interest in a pure, helpless, little white woman.
And when a person of color stops behaving good and docile the way you want, when they decide that theyre not going to put up with a situation that makes them uncomfortable or miserable or RIGHTEOUSLY FURIOUS, they become the bad guy. As seen countless times in the medias demonizing depiction of the Black Lives Matter protests and even of black people who get punished for just living their lives. It happens so often i shouldnt have to reiterate it to you but it somehow keeps flying over your head.
And when that dirty, conniving, perverted, slant eyed, buck toothed, stumpy little japanese man understandably snaps at the white person you guys are projecting onto and all you see is this:
Tumblr media
So dont be surprised when i say that id rather kill myself than entrust the safety of my oldest aunts and uncles or my youngest cousins with any of you who act like this. Im terrified of what could have happened if people like you worked at the facility that my great grandmother lived out her final years in. Would you have seen her as a wild animal that needed to be subdued too when she had one of her many dementia-induced violent episode?
I will not apologize for saying that i find it deeply disconcerting to see so many of you happily posting hateful vitriol or even about committing acts of violence against a man that looks like me, solely because he was experiencing his humanity

The thing is. Bad/gross food is rarely a DISH - when food is bad it's because it's been badly made, whether because of skills or available ingredients. but a dish p much only exists recognisably and has a name because someone likes at least one version of it.
which is to say. there isn't really a way of naming a dish, school of dishes or specific food culture and going EW ISN'T THIS DISH UNILATERALLY CONCEPTUALLY DISGUSTING without denigrating quite a lot of people.
like you don't have to like it in any form. but it's eaten and shared because it's good to a not insubstantial number of people when cooked right.
(and I don't really understand how you approach that with total incuriosity when it's a dish you haven't tried like. ARE rocky mountain oysters good? Maybe! I would very much eat some to find out!!!!)
this is actually something the British food poll did in a way the American ones I've seen haven't really - they described how the food they're imagining is, specifically, badly prepared (grey meat and veggies; unseasoned shepherd's pie). which is wildly tipping the scales by calling it British Food but. like. that is an on point definition of why that food is gross.
(this also applies to American chocolate, which like. Broad category but I think most of us understand this refers to low-cocoa high-sugar chocolate, probably with bucolic acid. so we are being invited to imagine Badly Made Chocolate not. the concept of chocolate)
personally I just think it's very rarely a good or funny idea to shittalk how gross any given food culture is. partly because food is important and culturally evocative for most people, partly because it's very...alienating? to be like WHO COULD EAT SUCH A THING? just because you wouldn't, and largely because to be frank it says more about you than about the food that you have so little imagination or curiosity that you can't imagine why a food might be enjoyable to folks who aren't you.
yes this includes jello salad, I would like to try it. ONCE. if it wasn't appealing to someone it wouldn't be so widespread.

as a chinese person yall need to stop blaming the ccp for everything (read: hoyo is capable of making colorist design decisions and not everything is a result of censorship pls)
#the govt is v racist while also doing like a lot of rlly questionable economic exploits but also: as a company hoyo can suck#please read what china actually censors and what historical nihilism covers#also: sumeru proves that a) they can make brown people b) the '''race'' dynamics were literally crucial to the plot#it was *intentional* that the rainforest region designs were pale and the desert designs were (a rather laughable) tanned because it added#to the colorism plot they tried weaving into the academic and knowledge inequality plot#so i think it's also gonna be intentional that the natlan designs are pale like they're not fucking fools#open at will: hater behavior#also: you fail to consider that mandatory (for cn server) skins for old 1.x characters got released bc they decided they were too revealing#however neither kaeya nor xinyan's skintones got changed; sumeru released as normal#literally based on what's been changed: the only thing hoyo seems to be out of line with right now is excessive cleavage on some fem chars#i dont think the skin tone censorship is the real issue. maybe the company is just. a product of the colorism and biases#in china/asia as a whole#it's not 'oh ccp censored them' maybe their skin tones are just colorist#this is technically a ''''subtweet'''' as they say but it's also: bro ccp is not the end all be all bogeyman#also idc if you are from the cultures that genshin tries repping in game but gets skin tone godawfully wrong idc you have the right to ask#for more from them and call them out for colorism! it's a societal thing yeah but they can also do so much better#edit: another thing about this is like: yall are literally infantalizing chinese ppl like do u think cn people can't be racist of tehir own#free will?? the government is the only thing forcing them to be racist?? get a grip. not everything is because of the ccp oh my fucking god

I don’t know who needs to hear this but indirect racism is still racism.
Just because you aren’t yelling slurs at someone doesn’t mean you aren’t committing microaggressions or doing overt generalised racist things.

Remember guys, assuming someone is racist based on their ethnicity is WRONG but if they're Chinese they've never seen a black/brown person and if they have they wouldn't want to spend any money on the franchise they're apart of and if they do. They're woke

So OP on that "why do people need subtitles anyway" post is an ableist racist antisemitic bigot! I'm deleting my reblog and blocking them.
Anyway I love watching things with subtitles for so many reasons and I love everyone else who loves watching things with subtitles for any and all reasons.
Subtitles my beloveds.

hii quick question -- i was scrolling your art tag and saw you moved to a huion at some point? and in your faq you said it broke :( would you recc huion tablets? ive been using a 12-year old wacom pen tablet, but have been wanting to get a screen tablet
so here’s my experience right. i had a wacom intuos pro s, used it for seven years. then i got a huion 1060 something something, i forget but it’s not a screen tablet, used it for a year and quite sparingly. now both times i stopped using them it was because the tablet Died. not the cable cos i tested them with different cables but the tablet itself. now one thing you should know about me is i famously don’t take care of my things especially if they have dangly bits, like dick and balls and cables. i had a bad tendency to shove my tablet in my bag beside my laptop, and to also drop things not intentionally but rather frequently.
under this great and immense pressure, my intuos pro lasted me fully seven years. sure it cost me a fuck shit ton compared to the huion but given that my huion lasted me less than a year, if you do the math i actually get more value per year from the wacom than the huion
now the huion tablet itself was fine. i was just so terrifically and wholly astounded by its quick and efficient demise that i cannot see myself investing in its brand ever again. then and again, if you’re getting a screen tablet that won’t see much travel and/or you are a gentle and careful person, this might not be an issue. i also have never used a screen tablet before, and understand that the price differences are much more drastic for those. but my experience was this: wacom lasted forever, huion kicked the bucket like a dead dog. my friend gave me her wacom intuos S when my huion broke as i was mid project and floundering (thank you R, i love you, marry me). it’s tiny as hell and old software, yeah, but it works like a charm. it’s reliable. it doesn’t glitch out on me the way that the huion admittedly often did, although my guess would be if you buy a more expensive product it may be tighter and have better support available. that being said, i will be sticking to my babygirl intuos s until it dies, probably in 60 years. hope this helps and good luck with tablet shopping bud

My biggest pet peeve in language learning circles is and always has been when people call Mandarin "Chinese" even though there is not one Chinese language but rather many different Chinese languages (plural! china is linguistically quite diverse), and "Mandarin" 官話 is actually considered its own language family with even more dialects under it and not just one language. I think accuracy matters when talking about what languages you're studying
anyways, here's a tweet on this topic that has been stuck in my mind from the moment i first saw it

Literally no context for this but I’ve said before that I don’t like people making fun of Yoko Ono’s name but never said straight out why and it’s because it seems kinda racist. Thats all

Hey, just for the record vandalizing Synagogues/Jewish schools/Jewish community centers or boycotting Jewish businesses just because they’re Jewish not only doesn’t help Palestinians and isn’t activism, but rather looks an awful lot like nazi Germany. In other words, it’s just antisemitic.
Stop harassing Jewish people and go do something to actually help Palestinians. Donate (I’ve talked about ANERA, World Central Kitchen, and the Palestine Red Crescent Society before). Protest at government offices and pressure policy makers. Boycott war profiteers and defense contractors (Lockheed Martin and Boeing, for examples) or companies that have otherwise provided support to the Israeli government and/or military (see, for example, why Google and Amazon are on the BDS pressure targets list). Raise awareness and emphasize Palestinian humanity – and for the love of all things holy stop portraying Palestinian and Jewish safety as diametrically opposed.
