Cruella de Vil by Marc Davis

Continuing my redesigns for Descendants, this is my take on Carlos de Vil! Here’s where I can see why the modern setting approach works better for a character like Carlos, whose mother isn’t close to the other villains’ time periods. Let’s just pretend that in this take, the school and world take place in a “out of time” sort of setting where it’s primarily a fantasy oriented place with the possibility of characters coming in from modern time periods. That, or the other characters are just suuuuper old fashioned. 🙃 For Carlos, I liked the idea of his wardrobe being old money hand downs passed over to him by Cruella - high fashion materials that are now tearing and falling apart. I kept him slightly shorter than the girls (even though it’s not super apparent without a height comparison) just because I liked that idea of him being the runt of the litter in his friend group.

Dark Genderbend Cruella De Ville x Soft-Hearted! Reader

In a dimly lit, luxurious office, Cruell paced back and forth, his soft bi-colored hair cascading over his shoulders.

His dark brown eyes, usually filled with mockery and disdain, now burned with pure anger from the fact that he is waiting for his new late secretary.

The door to the study creaked open, and you, a young, curious individual, stepped in.

The air filled with tension, as the fashion disgner's eyes locked on the you, like a predator sizing up its prey, ready to attack.

"You're late," Cruella growled, her voice a sultry, smoky whisper.

You flushed, nervously adjusting your clothing.

"I'm sorry, it was the traffic and I-"

"The Traffic? Really? you chose to use an elementary school excuse for your deliberate negligence, how pathetic."

His insult caused your eyes to glisten with tears, as his words were the straw that broke the camel's back for you today.

And under any stress, you break into tears, yet you try your hardest to hold it in fear of getting fired.

You have been told that in career fields nobody considers your feelings, and that you need to handle pressure if you wish to survive.

And Cruell seems like the perfect example to step on you without any care.

You gulped, feeling the weight of his disapproval, as you quickly plead with him.

"Please, Mr. De Vil, give me a chance to make it up to you, I'll work twice as hard to ensure everything is perfect for your next collection."

"You are danse in every way possible to think that I will allow a naive stupid girl like you near my work"

At his words, you break down completely.

"I'm sorry, I know I'm not the best... I will leave right now"

The fashion designer stays silent for a minute before smirking.

"I will give you a chance, but not to become my secretary, no, I want you for a much greater cause"

You wipe your tears before looking up at him with hope in your eyes and asking.

"What do you want me to do?"

"I want you to become my wife"

Your eyes widens in shock at his proposal.

"What if I don't want to become your wife, Mr. De Vil?" you ask with curiosity, not trying to tease him.

Cruell narrows his eyes at you, chuckling in disbelief.

"I will destroy your life and reputation to the point where nobody accepts you in work nor social life"

That's how you end up as the wife of the villainous fashion designer.

It will forever be hilarious to me that Disney wanted so fucking bad to make a Wicked movie — but couldn't get the rights from Universal — that they literally spent billions upon billions of dollars making SEVEN different films (and a whole season of television; not even including their sequels and spinoffs) more than one of which they even got Idina and Kristen to be in based on the stripped-down premise of "what if the Stock Female Antagonist™ was secretly the Misunderstood Angsty Girlboss Heroine™ all along?" (because Disney execs don't actually care about Wicked, they just saw Green, said "hey! if we can't get the real thing, why not use Our Own (and/or Public Domain) characters?" and simply followed the Marketing Department Road all the way to the bank).

Less funny is the fact they were so successful at it — regardless of the merits (or lack thereof) of any of those projects — that it ended up getting the production of the actual Wicked movie delayed by more than a decade (because it would ironically have looked like a copycat and probably faded into the background if it had come out back when Disney was pumping out knockoffs every fucking year).

There are some seriously untapped alternative interpretations for Cruella de Vil.

In the book she has a husband who’s simply known as Mr. de Vil (later given the first name Harry). She supposedly only married him because he’s a furrier and he’s little more than an extension to his wife. She even forced him to take her last name. He’s described as a small, worried looking man which isn’t much but compared to how other characters are described it probably means he’s shorter than most women and looks tiny next to his unusually tall wife, is slim but not thin and otherwise looks average. Other characters express worry for him because he’s married to Cruella but Cruella’s cat assures them he is just as evil as her. According to the cat Cruella is strong and bad and her husband is weak and bad. Basically, either he never gets to have sex with his wife or she pegs him. There’s no in between.

But even stranger, Cruella is heavily implied to be either an actual real demon from hell or the descendant of one. She’s always cold which is why she loves furs and she force her husband to keep their house boiling hot despite his suffering. She also loves hot spicy food, even spicy ice cream, again to her husband’s dismay. When they eat out he only eats the blandest food he can get.

And Mr. de Vil most likely knows about his wife’s true nature. When a puppy runs off while hidden under Cruella’s coat she screams that it must be bewitched while Mr. de Vil immediately jumps to the conclusion that it must be one of her dead/devilish ancestors who has come to take it away.

Make of that what you want. Considering Mr. de Vil is as evil as Cruella he could have summoned her and she just decided to stay and make him her anchor to this world.
