Carmen had not planned on staying long, but that was BEFORE the amontillado warmed her fingertips and the velvet air of the ballroom whispered to her like an old friend with the promise of ‘excellent’ gossip. The chandeliers above trembled slightly, as if scandal were a scent that clung to the crystal making it sway gently with its weight. Truth be told, she didn’t recall the host’s name, only perhaps that it was something vaguely Slavic (and vaguely irrelevant). What she did remember was being handed an invitation on a balcony in Madrid.

She wore red, of course. But not the red of pursuit or danger—not tonight. Tonight, she wore the red of indulgence. The red of wine spilled on confessionals and the soft bite of pomegranate seeds against a GUILTY tongue. It was a red that was not here to steal—not tonight. Through the crowd, she remained decipherable, moving like a rumor: too SWIFT to touch, too SHARP to forget.

And then—she saw her @owestwind . Not in the spotlight, not quite seeking it. No, the woman stood just outside the radius of attention but appeared with the quiet certainty of someone who knew how to make herself unforgettable. There was no artifice in her stillness, no glitter to bait the eye—just that rare, quiet gravity that people mistake for elegance when it is really evidence of SURVIVAL. It made carmen p a u s e. Carmen approached, not like a prowler but like a reader drawn to a footnote the author didn’t intend anyone to find. She stepped into the warmth of the candlelight beside her, the gold catching the rim of her glass as if blessing it.

“You look...” Carmen said, voice low, smooth as smoke over velvet, “...like a woman who’s been BLESSED by every sin that tried to ruin her. And now you wear your survival like…satin.” A pause followed—not empty but brimming with recognition as Carmen took a measured sip of her drink. “I’ve seen women who wear diamonds heavier than their shame, and others who call themselves art while standing in front of men too blind to see it. But you…” Her gaze narrowed, not unkindly. “You’ve got the look of something real in a room full of polish. And I was just in the mood to hear a true story tonight.”
