Niko: The Tower Arcana

Driven by isolation, pessimism and denial, human characters of the Tower Arcana are typically arrogant and introverted, isolated somewhat of their own volition but in part because of treatment from others around them. They are never immediately receptive to the protagonist, requiring some way of proving themselves before talking with them. The harshness of reality gets to them, forcing them to face their feelings. The protagonist's bond with them gives them the courage and understanding to break out of their isolation and establish more relationships with others.

Niko's life has never been easy, being thrown into the House of the Hearth at a rather young age with no knowledge of who his real parents are as well as having to deal with Crucabena for a part of his life and the rest of his teen years out in the street, Niko developed a front that is often rude, pessimistic and cynical. He isolates himself from people for his own protection cause he has never had any positive interaction with adults that were supposed to care and look out for him.

The Tower being struck down shown in the card is usually a warning, a bad omen leading to an impending doom, but in the card it is already been striken and is falling down, whatever that was holding the Tower up has now collapsed, and the old Tower was no more, forcing it to be rebuild new and discarded the old one.

The Tower Arcana focuses on the temporary and vulnerable nature of life under the premise of a "looming disaster," and accepting it as it is. Accepting the inevitability of doom isn't through yielding completely and appreciating the good things it presents, but rather realizing that the things it threatens are "irreplaceable," and the pressure of their inevitable doom is what makes them worth protecting. The Tower paints a complex picture about responsibility through individuality, as while we're unique, we're temporary, and acknowledging both is important to appreciate life.

This is especially fitting for Niko, whom has established a name for himself in The Araignée Noire, a feared phantom thief who has escaped the Garde time and time again with no one actually knows who was behind the mask. As doing so his ego grew and he never realized it, he saw himself as a savior, someone who would be willing to break the law because he believes the world is corrupted and he's the only one going to stand up before it.

This. THIS was the route he was heading towards and the "looming disaster" that the card is trying so hard to call out. If the Tower wasn't strucken down earlier, if they were to never fell down in the first place... Fontaine would be worse off knowing what The Araignée Noire is capable of. And knowing what they know now, it is infinitely better that his arrest happened as early as it did.

A former looming disaster for Fontaine, a drastic change for Niko as an individual...

Now, in the original Tower tarot card meaning, it also mentioned these changes that were fated to happen could often lead to a positive outcomes, and his arrest as The Araignée Noire shows just that, a blessing in disguise. He was forced to face his consequences and has to serve his sentences but because of that fated arrest was he finally, FINALLY gets what he actually needs, instead of what he thinks that he needed to do: a support system he can rely on, people he can actually counts on and be unapologetically himself around.

Shu Nakajima is a good way of seeing Niko in a more different, yet similarly told story: He was a golden child, he excels in everything and all he ever knows was to get good grades, get into a good school and eventually get a good job, he doesn't have friends because he feels they're an obstacle to his studies and that he doesn't need them, because of how smart he is, he has high standard of who he wanted to interact with and would spare no thoughts if theyre not to his standard. But deep inside he's a lonely boy, burden by the pressure his mom puts on him to be perfect that just the thought of failing sent him into panic, it got so bad that he cheated on an exam in fear of failure and got caught.

But because he cheated and was caught in the first place, he was able to confront his mother on how he feels and was able to get closure that his mom loves him no matter what grade he gets.

Shu's story is so eerily similar to what Adachi has went through, the only exception is that Adachi never made any friends, he studied his ass off to be able to get a job in the police force but because of his mistake he was sent to Inaba, and amidst feeling like his life sucks and that all and everything he does was for nothing and to be "stuck in a booney" - as he said it, he ultimately lead him murdering people because it was fun to him....

All of which I can't help but see that'd be how Niko would turn out if his life never turned around for the better.
