as an example of "a dash of the bad smell can enhance a good smell", I have a couple of bottles of a perfume that has corpse flower as a note.

I haven't smelt corpse flowers, but I have smelt common stinkhorn which smells like rotting flesh, and if you're familiar with that smell you can definitely pick it out in the perfume, especially as it dries down and some of the top notes start to fade.

it sounds like it should smell gross and off-putting, but in small amounts the corpse flower scent adds a hint of warmth and depth and sweetness to the perfume. I've had several compliments on how nice it smells from people who have no idea it's got corpse flower scent in it.

the other notes in the perfume are mostly white florals which are interesting because they contain indole, which is a compound that smells like mothballs in high concentrations, and is a key component of the smell of feces and coal tar.

in smaller amounts, indole tends to add warmth and depth to floral notes like jasmine snd orange blossom. you'll also often see indole scents described as "sexy", "seductive", "dirty", or "animalic".

scent is very weird and the concentrations of a chemical can wildly change your perception of how pleasant or disgusting it smells. it's fascinating seeing how the same scent can be perceived so differently depending on what it's mixed with and in what amounts

okay so plants do actually have sperm, but the pollen isn't the sperm.

the pollen grains are actually tiny plants that germinate when they land on the female part of a flower. when they germinate, they grow a "pollen tube" that's used to deliver the sperm. the female part of the plant also has a cluster of cells that are actually the plant's offspring, and that's what produces the female gamete.

essentially, making pollen is like if you asexually produced a child whose only purpose was to act as a sort of proxy penis, and then sent it out to sexually produce babies on your behalf.

and as such, when you blow on those dandelion seeds, you're actually helping to launch its grandchildren into the air

Blowing a dandelion is basically you helping a weed ejaculate.
