Tevinter Nights: dramatic summaries
Back in March I decided to read a story from Tevinter Nights out loud to the DA FanFic server every Monday night. I figured with the number of stories, we'd hit August right as we finished - hopefully it'll be a big month for us fans!
I just love this anthology so much - there are many gems and entertaining bits among them, and they're criminally underrated. A lot of the DA side content is hit or miss for a lot of people, but seriously, some of these short stories could be published on their own without any knowledge of Thedas and still entertain!!
Here are the summaries I wrote ahead of each reading. :) All of the TN short stories are independent of each other, so take a look and perhaps you will find one you enjoy. I tried to keep them largely spoiler free :)
Also, check out @larkoneironaut 's Tevinter Nights art project! They're enjoyable in their own way :)

Three Trees to Midnight, by Patrick Weekes
After the Qunari take Ventus, prisoners are put to work chopping wood on the outskirts of Arlathan Forest. Myrion, a human mage, and Strife, a city elf who joined the Dalish, are shackled together at the ankle as a work pair. While their relationship starts antagonistic, they are quickly forced to work together to escape. This thrilling adventure is one of our first looks into the mysteries of Arlathan Forest, and the Antaam’s advance south—despite the rifts forming in the Qun’s ranks. Notably, Strife and his companion Irelin appear in another short story, Ruins of Reality, and Dragon Age: The Missing.
Down Among the Dead Men by Sylvia Feketekuty
We finally see Nevarra in this tale, and what better place to start than in the Grand Necropolis itself? Audric Felhausen, our POV character, is a city guard who is tasked with protecting a Mortalitasi mage during an investigation about some restless undead in the bowels of the Necropolis. We see how spirits and demons wander, and get stuck, in the bodies kept there -- and how possessing a body, even a long-dead one, can have significant effects on the spirit. On both a cultural and metaphysical level, this story gives us a TON of lore. And Audric, our hero, is equally curious and unsettled by what he learns. By the end you'll see why so many people are desperate for him to be a companion in DA4!
The Horror of Hormak by John Epler
Do you love Wardens? Do you miss the dark fantasy elements of Origins? Do you like the aesthetic of Dark Souls, with giant stone doors you push open with all your might to reveal a giant boss? That's the vibe that John Epler (DA4 Creative Director!) brings to this story. Wardens Ramesh and Lesha are tracking down a group of missing Wardens in Nevarra--a group, it turns out, that does not want to be found. For better or worse, Ramesh and Lesha plunge into the darkness and discover a horrifying truth with massive implications for the ancient history of Thedas... and the Evil Gods about to wake in DA4!
Callback by Lukas Kristjanson
Follow Sutherland and his crew of honorable adventurers back to where they began: Skyhold. Now defended and empty but for a handful of Chantry chosen caretakers, the fortress that once housed the Inquisition has gone dark, and Sutherland is tapped to investigate. We see Skyhold and by proxy the Inquisition itself from the perspective of one of the little guys, drawn to it because of ideals and encouraged to become their best selves. In doing so, we also see how the events of this world can shape Spirits in unexpected ways, with consequences for a world where the Veil is thin. Callback is full of callbacks and cameos from a surprising group from DAI, and an entertaining and perilous mini adventure in its own right. This is a love letter to Skyhold, to the Inquisition, and a meaningful counterpart to the memories of Skyhold kept in its frescos.
Luck in the Gardens by Sylvia Feketekuty
Hear a tale of glory and daring straight from a Lord of Fortune themself! A genderfluid, disguise-wearing, acrobat-turned-swashbuckler regales us with an adventure from the streets of Minrathous. Spy on secret meetings between Magisters, learn what the Venatori have been doing since Corypheus' defeat, and tremble in the face of things "past the Veil of our world," neither demon nor spirit. Who are the Lords of Fortune from Rivain? What lurks beneath Tevinter's streets? This may be the story that inspired many people's wishlist for the next Archon and the next Black Divine -- some beloved, familiar faces join our hero to face the terror in the gardens!
Content Warning: Body horror, Eldritch horror, mentions of Tevinter slavery
Hunger by Brianne Battye
Tevinter Nights returns to Warden business in Hunger -- or does it? Evka Ivo, a heroic warden, and her junior recruit Antoine, have to decide what counts as Warden business when there's not a Blight ongoing. As they make their way to Weisshaupt to answer their summons, they decide to make a small detour to help a village in need. Evka and Antoine are our beloved dwarf/elf romantics who feature in a DA Day short story - as well as in the DA4 lead-in comic, The Missing! Whether they may be companions or contacts to our protagonist remains to be seen, but surely they'll make an appearance after such tales of heroism and compassion!
Murder by Death Mages by Caitlin Sullivan Kelly
We return again to Nevarra from a different angle this time! An agent of the Inquisition, the multiplayer necromancer Sidony, is sent back to the home country she resents in pursuit of a killer. We learn not only about Sidony's past, but about the political landscape of Nevarra: do the Mortalitasi run the country as shadowy puppet masters? What do the common people, and the nobility, think of the death mages from the Necropolis? How are Mortalitasi trained? And what does necromancy look and feel like to the characters in Thedas? In this tale of alleyway chases and gossip-filled balls, we get another glimpse into a country we may very well visit in DA4!
The Streets of Minrathous by Brianne Battye
We return to Minrathous to learn what's become of the Venatori since Corypheus's defeat. Join Neve Gallus, special investigator (and important cameo in The Missing comic), as she navigates the alleyways of Tevinter's great city in search of a murderer. Through her eyes, we see how less-privileged mages are viewed, and how the law bends to the whims of the rich and magical in Tevinter. Neve is joined by Tevinter Templars in her investigation, and their final battle is certainly eye-opening for anyone interested in fighting mages... What lies beneath the Streets of Minrathous, if not the Cekorax? Well, you're about to find out.
The Wigmaker Job by Courtney Woods
Lucanis Dellamorte, Master Assassin (and rumored heir to the First Talon) of the Antivan Crows, prowls the secret passages and unsuspecting rooftops of Tevinter with his cousin Illario on a contract. The target? A member of the Venatori with a... peculiar hobby. From shady hotel rooms to a grand gala and fashion show, get a look at the best of the Crows doing what Crows do best. This is one of the best stories in Tevinter Nights by far.
Content Warnings: abuse of slaves, body horror, torture, gore, hair eating, lots of pretty gruesome (if cathartic) assasination, and possession
Genitivi Dies In The End by Lucas Kristjanson
The remnants of the Inquisition approach a new group of adventurers and task them with finding the secrets of Fen'Harel. The Antaam - or at least, part of it - give chase. And Genitivi Dies in the End.
Herold Had the Plan by Ryan Cormier
Our Lords of Fortune are on the run as a mission to steal an ancient amulet goes awry. They have the amulet, they have their daring escape (a Lord of Fortune knows no other kind, of course) -- but Herold had the plan for what to do with the damn thing, and Herold is gone. As Starkhaven guards give chase, only one Lord of Fortune will survive the night. But will he make it to the mysterious Squire who hired them in the first place? Join us for an adventure that will break your heart and keep you on the edge of your seat.
An Old Crow's Old Tricks by Arone Le Bray
Tevinter has sent their finest centuri to defend the shores of the Nocen Sea from potential Qunari invaders. They stake their claim on the area and set up camp, enjoying the esteem of being the proud defenders of Tevinter. But it's not the Qunari this group of soldiers should fear.
CW: blatant racism against dalish, off screen massacre of a Dalish clan, many gruesome cathartic assassinations described in some detail, hand trauma
Eight Little Talons by Courtney Woods
Antiva's crown is weak. Antiva has no army. And the Qun is at its doorstep. Antiva's Crows may be the country's only defense, but they must act fast. Caterina Dellamorte, the fearsome leader of the Crows, calls all Eight Talons to meet in secret and solitude to discuss and prepare for the threat at Antiva's borders. But perhaps they should begin by looking for threats at home. All Crows are assassins. But only one is a murderer.
Half Up Front by John Epler
A former altus who chose to be disowned into poverty to be with her elven lover takes the job of a lifetime: steal a precious, powerful, magical artifact from the Archon's Palace itself. It was never going to be easy, but the former Altus Vadis couldn't have predicted that a Minrathous heist would bring her all the way to a port in Rivain, loyal to the Qun. What at first glance seems like a classic cat burgling caper actually might tell us a lot about the forces at play in Thedas—how perhaps the people on the ground may or may not be following orders.

Poppies: Their Magical Properties, Myth, and Connection to Persephone
Poppies, with their delicate petals and vibrant hues, have fascinated cultures throughout history, not only for their aesthetic beauty but also for their mythical associations and purported magical properties. From ancient mythology to modern folklore, poppies have woven themselves into the fabric of human imagination, often symbolizing both life and death, sleep and awakening.
Mythological Roots:
In Greek mythology, poppies are deeply entwined with the tale of Persephone, the daughter of the harvest goddess Demeter. According to the myth, Persephone was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld, while she was picking flowers in a meadow. As the story goes, Demeter's grief over her daughter's disappearance plunged the world into a barren winter until Persephone was allowed to return for part of the year, bringing spring and renewal with her.
It's said that during her time in the underworld, Persephone ate pomegranate seeds, binding her to Hades. When she returned to the land of the living, poppies bloomed in the fields where her tears fell, marking the spot of her sorrow and resilience. Since then, poppies have been seen as symbols of both the ephemeral beauty of life and the cycle of death and rebirth.
Magical Properties:
Poppies have long been associated with magic and mystery. In various folk traditions, poppies are believed to possess potent magical properties, including the ability to induce sleep, offer protection, and even grant visions.
One of the most well-known magical properties of poppies is their association with sleep and dreams. In folklore, it's believed that carrying a poppy flower or keeping it beneath one's pillow can induce restful sleep and bring about prophetic dreams. This connection to the realm of dreams has led poppies to be associated with the subconscious and the mysteries of the mind.
Moreover, poppies have been used in various magical rituals and spells for protection and love. Some traditions hold that wearing poppies or carrying them as an amulet can ward off evil spirits and negative energies, while others believe that using poppies in love charms can attract romantic energies and strengthen bonds between lovers.
Poppies, with their rich mythological background, magical properties, and timeless symbolism, hold a unique place in human culture. From their association with the goddess Persephone to their role in folklore and modern symbolism, poppies serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of life, death, and the mysteries that lie beyond. Whether admired for their beauty, used in magical rituals, or worn as a symbol of remembrance, poppies continue to captivate and inspire people around the world.

Your father frequently preached about the existence of evil spirits and the devil that led them, using his words to instill fear whenever you dared to challenge him. In truth, your so-called defiance was simply a yearning to escape the confines of home and venture out into the world. He would warn you about the dangers lurking beyond your doorstep—people looking to hurt you, steal you away, or taint your innocence. Yet, the constant confinement at home felt overwhelming, and whenever you had the chance, you would sneak outside, your eyes filled with wonder as you observed the bustling village around you.
One day while your father busily prepared both of you for church, your mind was preoccupied with thoughts of the forest that seemed to beckon you every time you stepped outside. Your gaze drifted to the shadowy trees visible through the window, a burning sense of curiosity bubbling within you.
I wonder if the story of the beast is true..
Suddenly, your father’s sharp voice cut through your thoughts. “Get over here, you scatterbrained child! Can’t you hear me calling you?!” Startled by his harsh tone, you instinctively grasped the hem of your dress, pulling it above your feet as you hurried over to him. “Yes, Father. I’m sorry.”
He muttered under his breath about you being an “insolent child who never listens” before opening the door and ushering you both into the crisp morning air. His scowl immediately transformed into a warm smile as he greeted the townsfolk, who were blissfully unaware of his true, abusive nature. You played along with his facade, forcing polite smiles and nodding to the women and girls, as well as the men whose lingering gazes felt possessive and unwelcome.
Disgusting..
You fought the overwhelming urge to escape their stares till you couldn't. Tugging at your father’s arm, feigning innocence, you asked, “Father, may I please buy something to eat before the service? I’m feeling quite faint.”
For a moment, his charming smile wavered, shadows flickering in his eyes. You braced yourself, fearing he might strike you then and there in front of the townsfolk, but he held back. “You women and your faintness…” he grumbled, placing a few coins into your palm.
“Be quick about it.”
“Yes, Father.”
Your heart raced with glee as you darted away the moment his attention was elsewhere, hurrying towards the stands where fresh produce was being sold that sunny morning like usual. “Good morning, sir! Could I please have some of your lamb?”
An elderly man, a scar running from his right eye across his nose to his left cheek, manned the stall, his hair a stark gray. He regarded you with a stern look, his dark brown eyes assessing, but then his expression softened into a warm smile that brightened your mood. “Sneaking out again, are we?”
You felt a flush of embarrassment at his knowing gaze and simply nodded, extending your palm filled with coins. He accepted your payment and handed you a heavy sack of tender, chopped lamb. “Off you go, before your father catches wind of this.”
Adrenaline coursed through your veins as you crouched low, slipping through a small gap in the towering wooden wall that separated your village from the wilderness beyond. You had traversed this path many times, but never had you dared to delve into the depths of the forest—until now. The cool air rushed past you with every breath as you sprinted into the trees, ensuring no townsfolk could spot your escape.
You continued running till your legs felt weak with excitement and fear, kneeling over with your hands on your knees, sucking in as much as you could. Nothing but silence surrounded you, the silence was strangely calm.
Did I really just make it into the forest?
Looking up at the tall redwood trees, the breath you had sucked back into your lungs was knocked away by the beauty of the old trees. Very gently, you brushed your fingers along the rough bark, the tree felt aged and rough under your fingertips.
×××
A considerable amount of time had passed, the sun still hung high in the sky, and the air had grown warmer. It was clearly afternoon now, you imagined your father was probably beside himself with worry.
I'll deal with the consequences later.
You were well into the forest, far from the village and your troubles, too preoccupied to care about what punishment awaited you back home. The lovely dress your father had insisted you wear was already dirty at the hem, no doubt would be a source of major frustration for him. The thought made you giggle.
The gentle rush of water piqued your curiosity as you continued your stroll, excitement bubbling within you. It seemed silly to feel thrilled over water—after all, water was simply there, often stagnant or rippling in a pot or bucket. But this was something else; it stretched out endlessly before you. Just then, birds began to sing in the trees, some soaring gracefully into the air. The clear blue water shimmered as fish darted back and forth, while a few deer grazed peacefully at a distance. You couldn’t help but think how foolish men could be, hunting such beauty without appreciating it—something that had always baffled you.
Because they’re men; all men are foolish.
The thought of the men back in town soured your mood. You’d much prefer to spend your time here, free from their insincere smiles and forced laughter. One had even had the audacity to propose to you, but your father, driven by greed, wished for you to marry someone wealthy instead. “Stupid men and their covetousness.” You kicked a rock, watching it skip across the surface of the water, sending ripples through the water and disturbing the fish below. “My life would be better if that mythical beast took me instead.”
Just as those words left your lips, you heard twigs snap behind you, sending a scream bubbling up your throat. You clamped your hands over your mouth, turning to see what had made the noise. Your efforts to stifle your next scream were futile.
A beast stood there, its fur as black as night, towering on all fours with soulless eyes that seemed to pierce right through you. You froze. You couldn’t move, despite your heart pounding against your ribcage and your mind urging you to flee. The creature remained still as well, its gaze fixed on you, filling you with a deep unease.
What was it waiting for? For you to run? For you to arm yourself? If I run, it will just catch me. And what would I defend myself with? It looks like it could kill me with a single swipe. Is it hungry?..
Keeping your eyes locked on the beast, you cautiously reached into your pouch. Your movement made the creature tense up and snarl, the sound sending chills of fear down your spine. Still, you proceeded until you felt the sack of meat in your hand. “Are you… hungry?”
Of course, it’s hungry! It eats people!
The beast responded with another snarl, less fierce than the last but still terrifying. You took this as a cue to slowly open the sack and toss a piece of meat toward it. Yet, the creature remained unmoving, its eyes focused solely on you.
I don’t want to die like this!
“Girl! Where are you? Come here now!” Your father's voice rang out from the trees, followed by shouts from other men calling your name. You opened your mouth to reply, but before you could utter a sound, the beast lunged at you, terror forcing a scream from your lips as it grabbed hold of you.
“There! I hear her!” was the last thing you heard as the beast whisked you away, the world blurring around you as the wind whipped against your face.
×××
The air was stifling. You were overheating. Everything around you radiated warmth.
“Hot...” you groaned, shifting away from whatever was generating the uncomfortable heat.
Did Father leave the fire on again?
A low, rumbling growl made you freeze in place. Suddenly, you realized that what you were lying on didn’t feel like your bed; it was both soft and rough at the same time. As you opened your eyes, the first thing you noticed was the dark wooden ceiling above you, unlike the lighter wood in your home. Then came the faint crackling of a fireplace nearby. Next to it sat a large man with long, black hair cascading down his back in pitch black waves.
In a sudden surge of panic, you bolted upright, scrambling backward until you bumped against something solid—a couch. “Who are you? Where am I? Where's Father?”
The man observed you, his red eyes betraying a hint of caution.
Caution? Why is he cautious when I’m the one who’s been taken?
“Can you speak? Answer me,” you pressed, trying to sound brave. “You talk too much,” he replied gruffly, his eyes briefly squeezing shut as if he were in pain.
You fell silent, deciding it was better not to provoke him further. He seemed irritated enough already. Instead, you glanced around the unfamiliar space before looking back at him, noticing the blood staining his abdomen, his hand pressed against the wound.
“You’re hurt.”
“You don’t say.”
His sarcasm sparked a flare of anger within you; never before had you felt such a strong urge to strike a man. An injured one at that.
“You have no manners. I wouldn’t expect anything else from someone who turns into a man-eating beast,” you mumbled the last parts, pulling your knees up to your chest.
He apparently caught your remark, the annoyance etched onto his face providing all the answer you needed. “Why should I be polite to someone living among savages?”
Savages?
“You kidnapped me!”
“I saved you from a group of armed men.”
You sat in stunned silence, bewildered by his claim. Why would he do that? Save you from men in your own village? “Why? I was perfectly fine. You were their target, not me.”
You watched him take a deep breath, his furrowed brow tight with pain. “You said you’d rather be taken than go back, remember?”
Oh.
“I didn’t mean it literally, but… thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
You both sat there, your eyes filled with curiosity while his gaze remained inscrutable, his face taut with pain.
Guilt surged through you; he had risked everything to rescue you from a life you loathed. “Let me tend to your wound. I’m the reason you’re hurt.” He didn’t respond, only closed his eyes once again, fingers resting on his abdomen loosening a little.
Did he just lose consciousness? Oh dear.
“Sir?”
Silence. .
“Oh Lords, please don’t be dead.” In a panic, you jumped up and dashed toward what seemed to be the kitchen, searching for anything to dress the wound. The only thing you found was a knife. If sewing the wound shut wasn’t an option, you’d have to resort to burning it closed—a method you found distasteful and brutal.
Hurrying back to him, your hands trembled as you knelt by his side. As you reached for his hand, he suddenly jolted awake, seizing your wrist with such force that you feared bruises were already forming.
“What are you doing?” he growled, his voice sharp enough to freeze you in your place.
Your eyes widened with fear as his grip tightened further upon seeing the knife in your other hand. “I—I couldn’t find anything to sew up your wound, so I thought I’d burn it shut!” you stammered, your voice quaking with fear. He glared at you with such intensity that nausea twisted in your stomach.
“Do you even know what you’re doing?” he finally asked, his grip on your wrist easing. “Of course I do.”
With that, he released you and shut his eyes again while you set the knife into the fireplace to heat it up. “I need to clean your wound before I close it.” He was silent, you didn’t wait for a response, rushing into the kitchen to gather some cloths and water.
When you returned, his eyes were still squeezed shut, his face appeared pale. “Excuse me.” Gently moving his hand aside, your heart sank at the sight of his wound, his blood flowing black instead of red.
“Wolfsbane,” he murmured suddenly, startling you.
Wolfsbane? Your confusion must have been evident; you could see it mirrored in his eyes.
“It’s from a flower. They grind it and use it in their weapons to inflict more damage than silver alone can.” Each word seemed to cause him pain, your heart ached for him. You didn’t know how to treat wolfsbane, but you were determined to help him regain his strength.
Forcing your trembling hands to steady, you got to work, meticulously cleaning his wound until the black blood was gone and you could see his wound clearly. He remained wide awake throughout, grunting in discomfort whenever you pressed too hard. His unwavering gaze on you made you uneasy, by the time you finished cleaning, he was propped up more.
“This is going to hurt.”
“I know.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“I know.”
Settling your lips into a thin line, you focused on the cleaned wound and the sizzling knife in your hands. You didn’t dare look up at his face, concentrating instead on pressing the heated blade to his injury, the sickening sound of flesh sizzling filling the air.
His groans of agony brought tears to your eyes, but you couldn’t pull away now. You were committed to sealing the wound shut, his cries soon escalated to primal snarls that scared you to the bone. After several agonizing minutes, you were done; his body shook, and the snarls dwindled until he grew silent.
“Are you—" Your question was abruptly interrupted by the wild look in his eyes above you. You should have felt fear then, but instead, a strange calm washed over you. His large hands kept your wrists pinned, the knife that had once rested in your fingers now lying forgotten on the wooden floor, the coldness if the floor felt striking again your cold skin, his imposing form hovered between your legs as he growled into your face.
You had fulfilled your duty to heal him, ready to face death free of guilt. Even when he opened his mouth to reveal long canines, you didn’t flinch. Closing your eyes to silently accept your fate, you waited. And waited. But nothing happened. Instead, you felt a strange hard pressure between your legs, one of your wrists feeling lighter as his hand moved to gently caress your face. Then, abruptly, all the pressure vanished, leaving you staring at the ceiling, panting and clutching your racing heart with one hand while the other pressed against your legs.
What…what just happened?

Bro was feeling a little ..𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒌𝒚 😋
I tried sticking to Regency type talking as best as I could here 😞 ANYWAYS.
I knowwww I was supposed to be doing the arranged marriage Tenya Iida x Reader fic after the last Bakugou fic chapter but this had been sitting in my drafts for a while now 😭 This isn't a slow burn fic though [ sorta ], smut will be happening and quite often.
As much as I love writing slowburns I truly don't think the Iida one will get anywhere due to the smut I write getting more traction than the actual x reader fics, this isn't me saying I'm not going to write it! Chapter 1 has already been written and proofread already, I just haven't posted it due to the lack of interactions I get on non-smut related writing.
For now I'll be pushing this smutty fic out for the Kiri lovers, Arranged Chapter 1 will be posted once I finish writing chapters two, three, and four.

Fallen angel - Wikipedia
Fallen angels are angels who were expelled from Heaven. The literal term "fallen angel" does not appear in any Abrahamic religious texts, but is used to describe angels who sinned. Such angels often tempt humans to sin.
SIN OF THE ANGELS
Lesson: The sin of the angels has been traditionally spoken of as a sin of rebellion. “I will not serve” is the statement attributed to satan and the other fallen angels. “I will not serve God or obey His will.” Recall also the statement that the serpent spoke to Adam and Eve in the Garden when he seduced them to act in disobedience to God by eating the forbidden fruit. The serpent convinced them to eat the forbidden fruit by saying, “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5, RSV-CE). This line also reveals the hidden first sin of the angels. They wanted to be gods. They did not want to serve the one God. They did not want to obey. They rebelled. They wanted to be the masters of their own destiny rather than to humbly submit to the plan of God for their lives.
BELMÔNT'S SIN: STREET IDENTITY MURAL CROWN APOTHEOSIS
In religion, apotheosis was a feature of many religions in the ancient world, and some that are active today. It requires a belief that there is a possibility of newly-created gods, so a polytheistic belief system. The major modern religions of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism do not allow for this. In Hellenistic culture, a mural crown identified tutelary deities such as the goddess Tyche (the embodiment of the fortunes of a city, familiar to Romans as Fortuna), and Hestia (the embodiment of the protection of a city, familiar to Romans as Vesta). The high cylindrical polos of Rhea/Cybele too could be rendered as a mural crown in Hellenistic times, specifically designating the mother goddess as patron of a city. Nightlife entertainment is often more adult-oriented than daytime entertainment. Location theory has become an integral part of economic geography, regional science, and spatial economics.

Go Go Music Influenced, Eurphoric Trance Chord Progression Melody, Progressive House and Drum n' Bass Percussion-808 Call and Response Staccato Polyrhythm or Layered Kick and Punch 808.
In his 1972 study of French lute music, scholar Wallace Rave compiled a list of features he believed to be characteristic of style brisé. Rave's list included the following: the avoidance of textural pattern and regularity in part writing; arpeggiated chord textures with irregular distribution of individual notes of the chord; ambiguous melodic lines; rhythmic displacement of notes within a melodic line; octave changes within melodic line; irregular phrase lengths.
Have the Snare and Kick say, "Hi, How are you?" And the 808 say, "I am good thanks for asking.”
Use progressive House to push the Drums Conversation to either Fast and Punchy for Happy or Slow and Deep for Sad.
In technical terms, "go-go's essential beat is characterized by a five through four syncopated rhythm that is underscored prominently by the bass drum and snare drum, and the hi-hat... [and] is ornamented by the other percussion instruments, especially by the conga drums, rototoms, and hand-held cowbells."[5]
Polyrhythm: In music, a cross-beat or cross-rhythm is a specific form of polyrhythm. The term cross rhythm was introduced in 1934 by the musicologist Arthur Morris Jones (1889–1980). It refers to a situation where the rhythmic conflict found in polyrhythms is the basis of an entire musical piece.[1]
Four-on-the-floor (or four-to-the-floor) is a rhythm used primarily in dance genres such as disco and electronic dance music. It is a steady, uniformly accented beat in 4. 4 time in which the bass drum is hit on every beat (1, 2, 3, 4).[1] This was popularized in the disco music of the 1970s[2] and the term four-on-the-floor was widely used in that era, since the beat was played with the pedal-operated, drum-kit bass drum.[3][4] (Punch 808-Kick)
Polyrhythm 4 on the Floor examples 2:4 or 5:4
Hard trance is often characterized by strong, hard (or even downpitch) kicks, fully resonant basses and an increased amount of reverberation applied to the main beat. Melodies vary from 140 to 180 BPMs and it can feature plain instrumental sound in early compositions, with the latter ones tending to implement side-chaining techniques of progressive on digital synthesizers.

Ghouls & Their Favorite Horror Movies (1980s edition)
In honor of Halloween being just a few days away (!!!) have some thoughts about the ghouls and their favorite horror movies. Narrowed down to the 1980s because that's probably my favorite decade for horror (shoutout to the 70s though).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dew: City of the Living Dead, The Evil Dead, Pieces, Cannibal Holocaust
Resident horror snob and ultimate gorehound. The bloodier, sleazier, and more fucked up the better. Huge fan of the Italian horror directors, especially “Godfather of Gore” and king of onscreen eyeball trauma Lucio Fulci. City of the Living Dead (aka The Gates of Hell) is his favorite, it’s gory, blasphemous, and just obscure enough for him to feel smug when nobody else has heard of it. The biggest horror fan of the group, he’s seen it all and is always on the hunt for something weird and new that he hasn’t seen yet (a difficult task). Introduced pretty much all of the other ghouls to their favorite horror movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aether: Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, Night of the Creeps, Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Lover of all the best 80s horror comedies. Silly and fun without being too intense or mean-spirited. The more over the top the better. Aether movie nights are always the most fun. Loves Return of the Living Dead because of the awesome punk rock soundtrack and 80s punk aesthetic. Secretly loves horror comedies the best because he gets to see Dew laughing the whole time. He and Dew are the most annoying about quoting movies back and forth to each other nonstop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mountain: The Thing, They Live, Aliens, From Beyond
Loves his horror with a side of sci-fi. Major John Carpenter and Stuart Gordon fan (who isn’t). Also a huge fan of sci-fi horror with amazing practical effects and The Thing is the king of them all (he loves the original too, for the plant-man monster of course).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Swiss: Hellraiser, Videodrome, Society, Street Trash
Body horror enthusiast. If it's slimy, horny, and taboo then he’s all about it. Unsurprisingly the biggest Cronenberg fan of the bunch. Huge fan of the Hellraiser series, what with all the leather and the chains and the flesh. Will also sit you down and force you to watch Society if you’ve never seen it (you will thank him later).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Phantom: The Monster Squad, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Near Dark
Of course it’s gotta be The Monster Squad. Phantom loves the classic Universal Monsters and Monster Squad has them all, wrapped up in a super fun 80s horror comedy with great writing and memorable characters. Will undoubtedly yell WOLFMAN’S GOT NARDS at the most inopportune times. Loves vampire movies the most and secretly thinks of his pack a little bit like the group of vampires in Near Dark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aurora: Night of the Comet, Slumber Party Massacre, Phenomena, Sleepaway Camp 2
GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS. Loves seeing pretty women absolutely kick ass onscreen. And any horror movie with a female villain will almost always become a favorite. Loves Night of the Comet because why shouldn’t a couple of valley girl cheerleaders get to enjoy a mall shopping spree while also mowing down hordes of comet zombies with machine guns?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cirrus: Possession, Altered States, The Shining, the Ninth Configuration
Queen of psychological horror. Her picks usually toe the line between horror and other genres. Cirrus movie nights almost always have to come with a “palate cleanser” movie right after (usually a Cumulus or Aether pick). Dew secretly thinks she has the coolest taste of the bunch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cumulus: Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Blood Diner, TerrorVision
80s horror comedies (horny version). Like Aether, Cumulus loves horror comedies. But for her, the sexier and more ridiculous the better. Always thinks a movie would do better with more boobs and full-frontal. Vocal advocate for more male nudity in movies. Linnea Quigley is her horror idol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sunshine: Slumber Party Massacre 2, Black Roses, Trick or Treat, Slaughterhouse Rock
Number one champion of the rock & roll horror subgenre. Horror and rock music were both public enemy number one during the Satanic Panic of the 80s, and Sunny loves movies that lean into it. Slumber Party Massacre 2 is the most fun with the leather-clad rockabilly slasher facing off against members of an all-girl rock group with his massive (unmistakably phallic) electric guitar-drill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rain: Jaws 3, Humanoids from the Deep, The Fog, The Abyss
Absolutely nobody is shocked to discover Rain is a fan of underwater/nautical horror. He doesn’t even care if a movie is “good” as long as it’s wet and full of weird monsters or creatures. Avid defender of Jaws 3 (it has dolphins, hello). His taste is all over the place quality-wise, from b-movie creature features like Humanoids, to the cozy coastal ambiance of the Fog. As the only ghoul who can breathe underwater, he loves to watch others squirm during the breathing fluid scene in the Abyss.

Basic Concept Guide 💫
Hi everyone! Welcome to a (long due) concept guide! I hope you guys are excited– I LOVE creating concept guides!
Tumblr media
Before we begin:
Tomorrow is Mahou Planets 3rd anniversary! Tomorrow, we plan on hosting a fun gamenight to celebrate three years of Mahou Planet! I recommend joining the server if you’d like to participate!
So sorry about the general inactivity! AP exams are coming up and I’ve been cramming for my AP exams I take soon. To those taking AP exams, good luck! I’ll be taking the AP US History and the AP Precalc exams. May the spirits who miraculously gave me a 5 on my AP Government exam be with us :)
Now, to the guide!
Tumblr media
🩷 WHAT IS A CONCEPT?
A concept is a general idea of what kind of magical hero you want to be. This could vary from canon media, such as Precure or Madoka Magica, to a completely original idea– or maybe both to some extent. Concepts build the foundation of what kind of magical hero you want to be. A concept can be as detailed or as vague as you want. Concepts are typically linear: you’re a specific type of magical hero with a specific aesthetic and goal.
There are different types of magical heroes that can get incredibly specific and in-detail. Luckily for you guys, I’m willing to hold back on my worldbuilding skills until some later time.
There is no right or wrong way to create a concept. I’m sort of expecting those who are already interested in creating original characters or create stories to have an easier time with this than those who have zero experience with character creation. I’d like to keep concept creation simple as this is a relatively new account with beginner level guides. So, I’ll do as such in this tutorial.
Tumblr media
🧡 HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH MAKING A CONCEPT?
Again, there is no right or wrong way to make a concept. I can’t exactly tell you what works and what doesn’t, because what works for me may not work for you. Here are a couple of methods I used in creating my magical hero concept, as well as some methods I have seen in the past:
One way I created my concept is by narrowing down exactly what I want as a magical hero. Start by asking yourself questions. These can be as vague or as specific as you’d like. These will begin narrowing down what kind of magical hero you would like to be, what you’ll be fighting, what you’ll look like, etc. A couple of questions to consider are:
Would I like to take on a pre-existing concept, something completely original, or maybe a mix of both?
What will I be fighting for? What important societal or spiritual values will I uphold as a magical hero? Because of this, what do I fight?
If I’m not going to be physically fighting evil, how will I combat the forces stopping said value from existing?
Do I want teammates, or do I want to work by myself?
How do I receive my magical abilities? Am I born with them? Are they granted to me by a familiar? Is there a higher power in my concept that gives me them? Or is there just no explanation?
Speaking of, will I have a familiar/mascot in my concept? Or will I just figure out things on my own?
What aesthetic am I trying to harbor as a magical hero? Does this aesthetic fit in with my civilian self, or is it something out of the ordinary?
What do I want to look like when I transform?
What weapon or weapons will I be using? What kind of powers am I going to possess? Will these be effective in upholding my values?
What role will I play in helping other magical heroes in the future? Will I be a fighter, support, or maybe both? Am I a frontliner or a backliner?
Just by asking these questions, you can already get pretty specific details about your concept. Continue asking these questions about as many prompts as you want (secondary forms, transformation device, etc.) If you need any help or more detailed questions to ask about your magical hero self, you can send a ask or join our Discord and ping Georgia (me) or any other members with the okay with pings role for help!
Another way to create concepts is to create a DO and DO NOT list. We’ve likely done these in school, creating diagrams or comparison charts. This is the same thing, and can be applied to even the smallest details in your concept.
I recommend either making this list in a word processor (Docs, Notion, Microsoft Word) or writing things down physically. Basically, you make a two-row column. Title a section DOs and the other DO NOTs. Then, write down what you want and don’t want as a magical hero. If you’re not sure what you want, then start with what you don’t want and vise versa.
For example, if I’m starting with the DO NOT side of the list, I’d probably write something like “I don’t want my concept to be dark.” That already wipes out a lot of dark magical hero shows, themes found in dark concepts, etc. I could also write something like “I do want my weapon to be a wand.” That already decides your weapon. You can be as detailed or vague as you want for this list.
Eventually, you’ll look at each side of the list and compare. Write down what you’ve learned, for example: I have a fun and lighthearted concept, and my weapon is a wand. Just from this statement alone, I can already envision a lot of concept ideas!
A more common method I’ve seen is by taking inspiration from different media. Let’s say you really like the outfits used in Madoka Magica for the Holy Quintent, and want to use them for your team. Then, you get the idea of having a Precure styled backstory: a kingdom gets overrun by evil rulers and it’s your teams job to restore it. You basically repeat the process with more medias that interest you, and BAM! A concept!
It’s an easier method, and it’s also a nice method if you’d like to incorporate your interests into your concept. If you have any hyperfixations or special interests, I’d recommend adding those into your concept to ensure you stay interested in your concept.
Tumblr media
Some more ideas to create a concept:
Search for some inspiration for your concept on YouTube, Pinterest, tumblr, etc.
Ask your friends what may fit you the most as a magical hero (if they’re unaware of magical heroes, you can ask them more unsuspecting questions like “What powers do you think I would have?”)
Get a reading on what your concept could be! A couple of Mahou Planet members are able to provide free readings, myself included!
Join someone else’s existing concept, could be a friend or an existing magical hero show
The most important takeaway from this is to have fun! Like I said before, there’s no right or wrong way to make a concept. What matters is that it’s something you enjoy, something you’re willing to fight for, and something you love! 💞
Tumblr media
Thanks so much for reading all of this– I probably rambled for longer than I should’ve. I’m gonna go back to binging Heimler’s History. Hope you guys have a good rest of your week!! MP out!

if you’re doing some wbw today i’d love to know about what the worlds of a few of your wips are like. i saw in your intros you mentioned dark gunpowder fantasy & dark gas lamp fantasy & im very intrigued by it
Happy WBW!! Thank you very much for the ask! :) I'll give a brief descriptions of the settings of BCC and ITNOV then!
Bear Castle Cycle
This is my eternal project, which I have copious amounts of worldbuilding for so I will struggle to keep this brief :'D BCC is a gunpowder fantasy, the technology is roughly equivalent to the first Industrial Revolution, so late 18th to early 19th century, and dark fantasy with some horror elements there. The plot is mostly political, but there's also a bit of murder mystery and military fantasy. It's set in Mesian continent, mostly in the Angusian Empire, but less so to Dir'ahin too. Here's map of the whole continent and the zoomed in map for the Angusian Empire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The base concept for Angusian Empire is what if Roman Empire, but it was the Napoleonic wars? There's guns but because they are not very good yet and for a lot of cultural reasons swords are still used a lot too. The general aesthetics are sort of Regency, but with more heavy Roman influence (it fits because Regency was very Roman influenced in the first place with all the Classicism being a big thing then).
There's magic, but it's not super present in everyday life in Angusian Empire, since it's highly restricted for the clergy. Magic is very volatile and can be very dangerous, since it's very much sentient. Spirits are magic and everything has a spirit. The spirits need to be reasoned with to channel them into a spell, but they can be fickle. They have a communicated with magically binding language, and you have to be very careful with the words when speaking with them. Doing magic is basically somewhere in the cross-section of poetry, legalese and trade. Because a spell is always a trade. The spirits require something back from their power. This is to say magic can be very dangerous and doing it wrong might get you or others killed or permanently soulless or possessed. In the official religion of the empire, they worship the sun and the earth, magic that doesn't draw from them is considered evil witchcraft. There's ghosts, demons, monsters and dragons, which are something between a spirit and a material body. Dragons are rare and very powerful and highly revered by the empire. They are considered to be the messengers of the sun and associated with the imperial family.
Angusian Empire is highly militaristic and industrializing at full force. The income differences are increasing especially in the provinces which is leading to political unrest. In Manoa, their biggest competitor, income inequality worsened by attempts to industrialize and keep with Angusian Empire led to a revolution, where the monarchy was overthrown in favour of a republic, and another war with Manoa seems increasingly likely. Dir'ahin is isolated nation, that doesn't follow the majority religion, practices magic much more openly and hasn't been in diplomatic relations with other nations for the past 150 years. It hasn't industrialized at all, but it makes up for that with much more advanced magic practices. In Dir'ahin there's also internal conflict between traditionalists who want to keep themselves isolated and reformists who want to bring industrialization to Dir'ahin and open the country.
The horror elements come from the magic. The dragons are basically powerful eldrich beings, there's body horror transformation/possession magic and the spirits tend to be pretty eldrich-like in general.
In the Name of Violence
In the Name of Violence is a gaslamp fantasy set in a city that's sort of like a Victorian London but in a Italian mafia story. Maeremin is a powerful merchant city state ruled by a merchant oligarchy. It's the center of world trade, a vibrant port city, but there's another Maeremin. Maeremin, that's ruled by the mafia, where you can't operate a factory without the approval and protection of the crime clans, where daemons roam the streets at night eating alive the beggars and drunkards unlucky enough to lack shelter, where the poor go days without seeing the sun. Maeremin is after all a city of illusions, world famous for it's illusionist artisans and booming illusion trade. Hiding the ugly underbelly under the beautiful surface. And above everything is the ever-watching god of sky with his countless eyes illuminating the night instead of stars.
There's three types of magic in ITNOV. Creation magic used by the nymphs, alchemy and divination. The nymphs are guardian spirits of nature and have the ability to create with magic, by molding life itself. Alchemy is a human attempt to imitate that creative process of nature, most closest it gets by illusion magic, which is works very similarly as the creation magic, except it's created with alchemy and can't change reality, only the perception of it. Divination is only achieved by connecting with Tino, the sky god, by eating it's flesh. Tino's many eyes see through time and space and by eating his divine flesh one can open an Eye of Tino in their forehead and see glimpses of the future. There's two types of divination magic, prophesy and prediction. Prophesy is only practiced by priests who can open multiple Eyes of Tino, while prediction is used by holy knights, who use prediction to see through illusions.

39. The Plucker, by Brom
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 143 My summary: Jack is facing the worst thing that a toy can face. He has been abandoned to the Underbed, the place where the lost toys that Thomas no longer loves are thrown. But things are getting even worse. Thomas' father has brought back a new toy from the war. And it wants to destroy everything that Jack knows and loves... My rating: 2/5 My commentary:
A library assistant peruses the shelves. They are down in the stacks, down where the old and forgotten books lie, down alone among the dust and cobwebs. Taking an armful of books, they head to the shelves, aiming to place the books back where they belong. They are just about to leave when...something catches their eye. Oversized, sticking out of its place, the cover dark and pages yellowed. A book about a toy. A strange book. But one they cannot help but take home.
So yeah, this thing's fucking weird. More under the cut!
I came into this book expecting to like it, and certain aspects of it, I did. For one, the illustrations are great. They're dark, creepy, atmospheric, and unsettling, and really add some extra spice to the story that's unfolding. The 'twisted toys' aesthetic has been done, admittedly, but this is a really good example of it. The story itself is strange and largely compelling, refusing to explain itself, and gritty and grimy where it wants to be. There's a real sense of dystopia here, of twisting up the ideas of a toy wanting to protect his owner and taking it to a desperate struggle for life and death, and I really admire that, you know?
Unfortunately, I can't overlook the rest of this weird little book. So there's two things here where the book falls down. One is that the plot is pretty bogstandard, and the characters are broad stereotypes. Jack is a Determined Hero trying to save Angel, who is a Girl. That's all her character is, she's a damsel in distress. Plot points are brought up and then kind of unceremoniously dropped - Jack being abandoned under the bed by Thomas never really comes up again, nor does Jack's social ostracism by the other toys, on account of them all dying. I feel like this story might have done a lot better as an animated short or something like that, a silent one where we can infer more from their surroundings. The secondary problem is that of race. The malevolent doll is a spirit from Africa who wants to possess/kill a child, and doesn't have much of a personality beside that. Some of the female dolls are stereotypes of Indigenous women (one Native American, the other Hawaiian) that are a bit uncomfortable. Sure, they're toys that a kid would have in the 1940s, but still. And there's a servant in the house whose entire role in the story is to sacrifice her life for the kid and is subservient to the white characters. She doesn't get fleshed out much, she just exists to empower Jack and die for Thomas. And it's lazy! Black people are either subservient (though she still has evil magic) or evil and need to be destroyed so some little white boy can live. Stereotypes on stereotypes. I was not impressed.
Next up...hoo boy. Time to flame a book that a lot of people love. Oops.

Dandadan review
I've been ride or die for Science Saru since Night Is Short, Walk On Girl and Ping Pong: The Animation, so I'm very disappointed that I had to find out for myself that the anime flavour of the week, Dandadan, is one of theirs. Do better next time, y'all.
Brief summary: Dandadan is a romantic farce slash action show about a high-schooler otaku who believes in aliens but not ghosts, and a popular girl who believes in ghosts but not aliens. A double-dare winds up proving both of them right: the girl gets abducted by aliens, the guy gets possessed by an evil spirit.
Thematically, Dandadan is about the gulf between any two people's worlds: it's about how terrifying it is to say to someone, "this is what I'm into!" It's about how this gulf is not as impossible to cross as it appears; UFOs and demons can coexist, may even be one and the same.
It's also very preoccupied with sex.
First of all, the gang at Science Saru have indeed cooked, as ever. The style veers into outright cartoonishness a bit more often than usual, but the budget is always applied thoughtfully and the visuals are memorable, appealing, and full of life.
I suspected the show would share some themes with The Tatami Galaxy, a favourite of mine from Science Saru founder Masaaki Yuasa, and I was right in that regard. But the manga source material here is from a different writer, adapted by a different writer still, and the script on this one is much trashier, and much more aimless. If you go into it thinking "this is going to be pure trash!", I think you'll miss a lot of the more interesting stuff it's getting at. But equally if you go in expecting another remarkably nuanced portrayal of isolation and obsession, there's still a lot of wank dragging it down.
The big problem with Dandadan is that it's not fucking finished. It's not actually a complete unit of storytelling. I was misled into thinking it was another one-shot season, which would reach a conclusion; the reality is that it just stops dead on a complete nothingburger of a cliffhanger, failing to resolve pretty much anything. It's already been renewed for a second season, but the manga itself appears to still be ongoing, so who fucking knows what the plan is? So yeah, it's difficult for me to offer much in the way of reliable interpretation.
Nevertheless, here goes.
The weirdest thing about Dandadan is that Episode 1, right off the bat, has an almost-rape scene in it. Aforementioned alien abduction, threat of probing, you get the picture. What's weird about it isn't that it's there. It's that, after going there, the story has pretty much no interest in going back there. Nothing else in the show is remotely as explicit; in fact, for the most part, Dandadan is aesthetically and narratively a cartoon, neither its content nor its themes strictly mature in any sense. It has kind of a juvenile sense of humour, overall, and I suspect that's honestly the explanation; the scene itself is largely played for laughs, as the girl (Momo Ayase) has a strong personality and the aliens are these goofy frog-people in skinsuits.
See, the conceit of Episode 1 is that this happens in parallel with the male protagonist's own supernatural encounter, where he runs into a ghostly grandma who eats his penis (we don't actually see this). The show wants to basically equate "Okarun"'s emasculation with Momo's near-rape; it's sort of as humiliating as it is traumatic, as the show sees it, I think? And this is because overall, the story is about sex, it's about how sexuality is this awkward and messy thing. Swiss Army Man does the same thing with much more tact. The point is that "showing someone what you're into" has much more oomph when it's specifically about sex. It's about vulnerability.
Where the show stumbles, really, is that it's quintessentially a very male show. It purports to have these two deuteragonists, but it's written from a male perspective, and its content is pitched at a male target audience. It's most undeniable, I think, with the pink-haired girl who winds up being the focus of the middle few episodes, where she keeps saying stuff along the lines of "I love being really pretty so I can manipulate boys and make fun of them!!". This is what high school boys think girls are like, not what girls are actually like. And so it's unsurprising that the show is not actually equipped to tackle the topic of sexual violence, once it's brought up.
The spectre of it hangs over the rest of the show. It's at one point suggested that turbo-granny haunting the tunnel is somehow related to all these anonymous dead girls who've been killed (and presumably raped?), but nothing is really made of that. The pink haired girl gets this extended backstory about a dead mother, who was killed by the yakuza (I think?), and again, the best you get is like, "well, that's sad". This is an episode that is treated with about the same weight as the backstory for the alien-mantis-shrimp gig-worker salaryman's blood-transfusion-needing alien son, a bit later in the season. Neither of these bits are individually bbbbbad, I'd say, it's just that the show is unfocused and often doesn't know what it's trying to say. The theme of misogynist violence ends up feeling incidental, practically vestigial; like they'd meant to spend just as much time on male social issues, and just couldn't help themselves, because they can't actually take the idea of violence against men seriously, and besides it's hotter to put the girls in Predicaments. Okarun's emasculation is the main fetch-quest driving the plot, but narratively it's mostly for the sake of making a bunch of ball jokes.
I know I'm ripping into this show, but the truth is that I did mostly like it. I watched most of it in a single day. The animation and action really is fantastic. The dialogue is often fun (I watched the dub, incidentally). Moreover, though, if you try to put aside the cultural context of this stuff and read it all exclusively as a character study about these specific made-up high-schoolers, pretending it's not making broad generalisations about Men and Women, you'll have a much better time. All the silly soap-opera stuff does a great job of capturing the reality of getting twisted up in knots over a crush, so that when the characters finally just talk frankly about their feelings, it's often very cathartic.
Frankly, for someone on my particular media diet, it was refreshing to see a story which was actually willing to touch on the topic of sex at all. God knows I don't see it in mainstream western media. Maybe Dandadan might give some young people the courage to talk to one another...? That's all I can hope for it, really.
Again, this is where the incompleteness of the story is frustrating. In this season, Okarun gets what I can only describe as an anti-arc: he starts out valuing Momo as a good friend, but soon realises he has a crush on her, and by the end of the show he's practically unable to talk to her without going into convulsions. I can only assume that the second season will reverse this, reconstructing that original friendship alongside a proper romance between the pair of them. Orrrr maybe it will just string us out forever on will-they-won't-they bullshit, who's to say.

I fell in Spiderverse-Mania and entirely revamp my #spidersona ! Zoraida Adams discovered she was adopted just before she was bitten by a radioactive spider, which gave her a new set of abilities and led her to her fate as Spider-Woman of Earth-1155. Bitten by a spider from the moroccan region of Sahara, also known as Sicarius, she named herself Zicarius and designed her suit based on Moroccan, specifically Amazigh, influences and colors. She got all basic Spider-Man powers (spidersense, the ability to stick to any surface, super strength, etc.), but she also had her own tricks. Namely, she can produce her own web, which is tampered with by sand she can create objects from. She also possesses a much more sensitive spidersense, increase with Moroccan superstitious culture and beliefs of spirits known as Djinns. For this reason, her suit is decorated with Eyes of Protection and Hamsa Hand, which are supposed to push evil and negative energy away.
On Earth-1155 each person as an Arabesque or Ornament floting behind their heads (it is their dimension aesthetic), but Zoraida got two (one for her civil life and the other for her superhero stuff). She didn't change it. The Ornament transformed itself when she wore her mask for the first time. It naturally preserved her secret identity.
I wish to tell you more about her. However, I don't want to bother any more of you with the entire comic series I'm imagining for her (yes, I'm already that deep in the abyss). I will share a little in future posts... maybe ?

actually i just find "motivated by evil spirits" as an excuse for time lord behaviour to be fundamentally boring in general. romana did not regenerate or become president because of pandora, she did it because she's a freak. the manipulation of her family history and possession of her past self are an added aesthetic bonus but not the primary reason for her behaviour

Terrifier 3 Review: Art the Clown Returns with Gory Holiday Carnage
Tumblr media
The third installment in Damien Leone’s Terrifier franchise, Terrifier 3, arrives with all the gore, shocks, and tension fans of the series have come to expect—but this time with a Christmas twist. Taking place during the festive season, the film offers a grisly juxtaposition of holiday cheer and supernatural horror, with Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) continuing his spree of grotesque and inventive kills. However, this time, he’s not alone; he’s joined by a possessed Victoria Heyes (Samantha Scaffidi), making the stakes even higher for returning protagonist Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp9zbGI-kMc&t=14s Christmas setting: One of the standout aspects of Terrifier 3 is the way it uses Christmas to intensify the horror. Leone cleverly contrasts the warm, cozy aesthetic of the holiday season with cold-blooded violence. The decorations, festive music, and general spirit of joy create a chilling dissonance when paired with Art's gruesome rampages. Early on, viewers are treated to a harrowing opening sequence in which a family is massacred in their home—a moment that sets the tone for the rest of the film. The Christmas setting serves as more than just a backdrop; it becomes an essential part of the movie's unsettling vibe, with the audience constantly reminded of the fragile boundary between innocence and terror. Lauren LaVera is the heart and soul: Lauren LaVera shines once again as Sienna Shaw, offering a grounded and emotional performance that serves as a counterbalance to the film's supernatural chaos. In Terrifier 3, Sienna is recovering from the traumatic events of the previous film and trying to rebuild her life. Her relationship with her younger brother, Jonathan (Elliot Fullam), is particularly compelling as the two siblings struggle to reconnect. Jonathan, now in college and attempting to move forward, mirrors Sienna's emotional struggle, though his distance adds to her feelings of isolation. Leone smartly develops Sienna’s character further in this sequel, as her internal battle becomes just as intense as the physical one she must wage against Art and Victoria. She’s still haunted by the deaths of her friends and the traumatic events of the Miles County Massacre, which are brought back to the forefront when Art the Clown re-emerges in her life. The film delves deeper into her psyche, exploring the scars—both literal and metaphorical—that she carries from the past. Art is nastier than ever: David Howard Thornton’s portrayal of Art the Clown continues to be the centerpiece of the franchise. Thornton expertly balances the character’s silent menace with his exaggerated, almost slapstick-like mannerisms, which make Art both terrifying and strangely mesmerizing to watch. Terrifier 3 raises the stakes by pairing him with Victoria Heyes, whose possession brings an even darker, more supernatural edge to the story. Scaffidi’s Victoria is deeply unnerving, with her connection to Art making her a formidable and unpredictable antagonist. Art’s kills, as in the previous films, are brutal and unrelenting, with Leone pushing the limits of practical effects to craft grotesque set pieces that are both shocking and creative. There’s a particular standout sequence at a local shopping mall that stands out as being particularly crazy. The use of Christmas iconography—like Santa hats, gift boxes, and holiday décor—adds an ironic layer to the carnage, showcasing Leone’s ability to blend horror with absurdity. Victoria's role: Victoria’s presence amplifies the supernatural elements in the story, as her possession of a new body and connection to Art through demonic forces bring a fresh layer to the narrative. This dynamic makes the film feel even more chaotic and unpredictable, as Art is no longer the sole force of evil. The concept of angels and demons, touched upon through Sienna and Jonathan's research into Victoria’s rebirth, adds a mythological twist that enriches the story. Practical effects: One thing Terrifier 3 certainly does not shy away from is its gruesome practical effects. From the opening family massacre to the mall sequence and beyond, the film’s commitment to showcasing extreme violence is unwavering. Fans of the franchise will not be disappointed in the blood-soaked mayhem that ensues, though the intensity may be overwhelming for casual viewers or the faint of heart. Leone once again proves his expertise in creating unsettlingly detailed gore effects that feel disturbingly real. This attention to detail in the practical effects department is what has set this franchise apart from other modern slasher films. In Terrifier 3, the kill scenes are as inventive as ever—whether it’s Art testing his new weapons on unfortunate victims or Victoria’s demonic influence leading to even more grotesque deaths. Art's mythology: What makes Terrifier 3 stand out from its predecessors is the way it expands the mythology surrounding Art the Clown and his connection to the supernatural. The film explores the idea of demonic rebirth, with Victoria as Art’s vessel, as well as the possibility of Sienna being part of a greater cosmic battle between good and evil. The film’s exploration of Sienna’s dream sequences gives the story a mythical and almost heroic quality. This contrasts sharply with the grim, grounded violence that Art brings, creating an interesting balance between the real and the supernatural. Pacing issues: While Terrifier 3 delivers on many fronts, there are moments where the pacing falters, particularly in the middle portion of the film. Some of the scenes at the university, involving Jonathan’s interactions with his friends, feel a bit drawn out, and the tension dips slightly during these moments. Additionally, the film’s reliance on dream sequences—while visually striking—occasionally interrupts the momentum of the narrative. Overall: Terrifier 3 successfully raises the bar for holiday-themed horror, offering a terrifying blend of Christmas cheer and supernatural slasher mayhem. With its inventive kills, expanded mythology, and strong performances—particularly from Lauren LaVera and David Howard Thornton—the film cements itself as a worthy sequel in the Terrifier franchise. While it stumbles occasionally in pacing, the overall experience is a chilling and thrilling journey that fans of the genre will undoubtedly enjoy. This Christmas, Art the Clown is back, and he’s deadlier than ever. Read the full article

Faerie Jewelers
Jewelers from the fae are well known for their excellent workmanship and unmatched attention to detail. Often believed to possess magical powers, these artists create works that are not only visually stunning but also evoke a sense of magic. Usually imbued with natural energies and originating from magical realms, faerie jewelers work with rare and precious materials. Gems such as moonstone, star sapphire, and enchanted emerald, chosen for their unique qualities and ethereal beauty, frequently feature in their creations. Fairy craftspeople have passed down the mysterious art of making faerie jewelry over the centuries. Fairies make each piece under precise starlight or during specific lunar phases to capture the desired magical powers. The fairies have a strong bond with nature, as evidenced by the designs' frequent use of natural features like leaves, vines, and flowers. Faerie jewelry is characterized by minute, detailed embellishments, and each piece has a unique significance or narrative to impart. Faeries, with their dexterous hands and acute vision, can work with minute details that human jewelers would find impossible, creating works of art that seem straight out of a dream.
Tumblr media
People frequently use faerie jewelry for purposes other than decoration; it is not just ornamental. Many items are believed to offer protection, bring good fortune, or enhance the wearer's skills. A ring, for example, could enhance the wearer's creativity or intuition, while a delicate necklace might provide protection from evil spirits. People who believe in the magical qualities of these objects greatly desire them due to the delicate yet powerful enchantments they possess. According to certain traditions, wearing specific faerie jewelry may even enable the wearer to view the fae's invisible world and cross over into the magical world. Faerie jewelry is appealing for reasons other than its magical qualities. They are valued heirlooms and collector's goods because of the exquisite beauty and individuality of each piece. The vivid gemstones, organic designs, and fine filigree work combine to produce a timeless elegance that goes beyond regular jewelry. People view owning a piece of faerie jewelry as a unique opportunity that showcases their appreciation for both the supernatural and artistic talent. It is possible for collectors and aficionados to spend years looking for these unique treasures, frequently traveling long distances to secret faerie gatherings or clandestine markets. Many human artists have been influenced by faerie jewelers, attempting to emulate their enchanted aesthetic. These man-made pieces nevertheless have the whimsical and otherworldly quality that characterizes faerie jewelry, even though they might not have the magical touch of genuine fairy creations. Faerie jewelers continue to captivate and inspire with their complex workmanship, unique jewels, and nature-inspired designs. In an effort to evoke the same sense of wonder and magic in their creations, human jewelers frequently research the ancient fairy tale lore and skills. If they are lucky enough to earn the trust of well-known faerie communities, some even work together, picking up knowledge straight from the source. Literature and other media also demonstrate the faerie jewelers' cultural influence. Numerous fairy tales and fantasy books contain tales of enchanted jewels, which frequently represent love, power, or destiny. These stories instill a massive obsession with faerie jewelry in the public consciousness, feeding off of it. The elaborate and enchanted creations of faerie jewelers serve as a source of inspiration for numerous writers, filmmakers, and artists who create imaginative worlds in which these gems play a major role in the story. Furthermore, rituals and significant life events are often associated with faerie jewelry. In faerie culture, people can present a piece of jewelry as a sign of commitment, a gesture of love, or a milestone for entering maturity. Family heirlooms often inherit these extremely sentimental items over time. Various human societies wear faerie-inspired jewelry at weddings, christenings, and other events, believing it bestows blessings and protection on the participants.
Tumblr media
Of special importance are the materials used to make faerie jewelry. In addition to the well-known gemstones, faerie jewelers use materials such as spider silk, dew drops, and even caught moonbeams. The faeries weave these components into the jewelry in ways that appear inconceivable by human standards, endowing the items with a shimmering inner light and a magical quality. The amazing artistry required to handle such fragile materials demonstrates the faeries' unmatched talent and connection to nature. In summary, faerie jewelers have a special place in both the human and magical realms. Their enigmatic and enchanting designs never cease to enthrall and inspire. Whether due to its elaborate designs, the magical qualities it is believed to possess, or its cultural significance, faerie jewelry continues to represent beauty, wonder, and the timeless appeal of the mystical.
