Ghouls & Their Favorite Horror Movies (1980s edition)

In honor of Halloween being just a few days away (!!!) have some thoughts about the ghouls and their favorite horror movies. Narrowed down to the 1980s because that's probably my favorite decade for horror (shoutout to the 70s though).

Dew: City of the Living Dead, The Evil Dead, Pieces, Cannibal Holocaust

Resident horror snob and ultimate gorehound. The bloodier, sleazier, and more fucked up the better. Huge fan of the Italian horror directors, especially “Godfather of Gore” and king of onscreen eyeball trauma Lucio Fulci. City of the Living Dead (aka The Gates of Hell) is his favorite, it’s gory, blasphemous, and just obscure enough for him to feel smug when nobody else has heard of it. The biggest horror fan of the group, he’s seen it all and is always on the hunt for something weird and new that he hasn’t seen yet (a difficult task). Introduced pretty much all of the other ghouls to their favorite horror movies.

Aether: Return of the Living Dead, Re-Animator, Night of the Creeps, Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Lover of all the best 80s horror comedies. Silly and fun without being too intense or mean-spirited. The more over the top the better. Aether movie nights are always the most fun. Loves Return of the Living Dead because of the awesome punk rock soundtrack and 80s punk aesthetic. Secretly loves horror comedies the best because he gets to see Dew laughing the whole time. He and Dew are the most annoying about quoting movies back and forth to each other nonstop.

Mountain: The Thing, They Live, Aliens, From Beyond

Loves his horror with a side of sci-fi. Major John Carpenter and Stuart Gordon fan (who isn’t). Also a huge fan of sci-fi horror with amazing practical effects and The Thing is the king of them all (he loves the original too, for the plant-man monster of course). 

Swiss: Hellraiser, Videodrome, Society, Street Trash

Body horror enthusiast. If it's slimy, horny, and taboo then he’s all about it. Unsurprisingly the biggest Cronenberg fan of the bunch. Huge fan of the Hellraiser series, what with all the leather and the chains and the flesh. Will also sit you down and force you to watch Society if you’ve never seen it (you will thank him later).

Phantom: The Monster Squad, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, Near Dark

Of course it’s gotta be The Monster Squad. Phantom loves the classic Universal Monsters and Monster Squad has them all, wrapped up in a super fun 80s horror comedy with great writing and memorable characters. Will undoubtedly yell WOLFMAN’S GOT NARDS at the most inopportune times. Loves vampire movies the most and secretly thinks of his pack a little bit like the group of vampires in Near Dark.

Aurora: Night of the Comet, Slumber Party Massacre, Phenomena, Sleepaway Camp 2

GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS. Loves seeing pretty women absolutely kick ass onscreen. And any horror movie with a female villain will almost always become a favorite. Loves Night of the Comet because why shouldn’t a couple of valley girl cheerleaders get to enjoy a mall shopping spree while also mowing down hordes of comet zombies with machine guns?

Cirrus: Possession, Altered States, The Shining, the Ninth Configuration

Queen of psychological horror. Her picks usually toe the line between horror and other genres. Cirrus movie nights almost always have to come with a “palate cleanser” movie right after (usually a Cumulus or Aether pick). Dew secretly thinks she has the coolest taste of the bunch.

Cumulus: Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, Blood Diner, TerrorVision

80s horror comedies (horny version). Like Aether, Cumulus loves horror comedies. But for her, the sexier and more ridiculous the better. Always thinks a movie would do better with more boobs and full-frontal. Vocal advocate for more male nudity in movies. Linnea Quigley is her horror idol.

Sunshine: Slumber Party Massacre 2, Black Roses, Trick or Treat, Slaughterhouse Rock

Number one champion of the rock & roll horror subgenre. Horror and rock music were both public enemy number one during the Satanic Panic of the 80s, and Sunny loves movies that lean into it. Slumber Party Massacre 2 is the most fun with the leather-clad rockabilly slasher facing off against members of an all-girl rock group with his massive (unmistakably phallic) electric guitar-drill.

Rain: Jaws 3, Humanoids from the Deep, The Fog, The Abyss

Absolutely nobody is shocked to discover Rain is a fan of underwater/nautical horror. He doesn’t even care if a movie is “good” as long as it’s wet and full of weird monsters or creatures. Avid defender of Jaws 3 (it has dolphins, hello). His taste is all over the place quality-wise, from b-movie creature features like Humanoids, to the cozy coastal ambiance of the Fog. As the only ghoul who can breathe underwater, he loves to watch others squirm during the breathing fluid scene in the Abyss.

Favorite headcanon for every ghoul! Go!

Let's see... This got long, so below the cut they go.

-Aether has a battle jacket with patches and pins from different cities the band has played in, and a couple handmade ones from the other ghouls.

It has been left behind and lost multiple times, but always winds up back home with him when tour is over.

Now that Aether isn't touring anymore, it hangs in his closet, and he only really takes it out when he's feeling nostalgic.

-Dew is a morning person.

He likes getting up before everyone else so he has time to himself, really helps him prepare for the day.

He only really sleeps in when he's sick or the weather is bad.

-Swiss grew up on the surface, so he's the most "humanlike" out of the ghouls, which may also be because his dad is human, but who can say.

I don't know why I decided this a while back, but he's from Florida.

-Rain has the most extensive wardrobe out of all of the ghouls, and tends to gift people clothes, shoes, and accessories.

Anything he hasn't worn for a while either gets given to someone else to wear or donated to charity shops, but if it was a gift he'll hold onto it until it's too worn out to wear anymore.

-Mountain has been married before, but he doesn't like talking about it, so suffice to say the relationship did not end well... (actually wrote a fic about that).

-Cumulus is just as bad as Dew when it comes to talking about her feelings, but she masks them with polite smiles and jokes, so nobody really notices until it becomes too obvious to ignore.

-Cirrus has a lot of weird t-shirts she wears around, like the "Husband of a Hot, SEXY, Smart Gemini Woman who likes METAL and Wine" kind.

She wears them with cargo shorts and crocs sometimes and it makes Rain wanna die a little.

-Sunshine can and will eat the flowers she is given.

Unless they're store bought, in which case she checks with Mountain to see if there's any, like, chemicals and shit mixed in with their water or on the petals... THEN she eats them.

-Aurora likes making things with beads, and has made, like, a dozen of those beaded lizards.

-Aeon/Phantom is in his slime making phase, and keeps using up all the craft glue to make new mixes, because he likes the squish.

There's not a lot of information about the sewers in Baldur's Gate I've noticed.

So I'm going to give my thoughts. Most of this will be headcanon because again - there isn't much about the sewers that I can find.

Based on BG3 - NOTE: Sewers are in Act 3 so there are going to be spoilers. I am also writing this from memory:

Kobolds maintain the sewers, if I'm recalling right they are in a guild and I think in the game were on strike.

There is a sluice gate that is controlled by heat and water pressure (and is the most annoying puzzle in the entire game).

There are slimes, oozes, and mephits living down there.

The Guild has a headquarters in the sewers.

It is suggested that there is access to the Szarr palace from the sewers, even though the player cannot use this entrance.

There is also access to the temple under the Szarr palace from the sewer.

Access to the Undercity+Bhaal's temple is here as well.

There is a portion of the sewer that seems to have lots of plants and may have some sun access.

Somewhere there is access to the Underdark - but is never actually shown in game.

While there are a couple of outhouses in Act 2, toilets are not shown anywhere else that I saw - I am assuming the developers simply didn't go through the process of building them in-game and not that there aren't toilets.

Pipes, pumps, and plumbing exist in-universe. In fact you can talk to people who are trying to get water from one of the fountains and it isn't working.

Other things I've found that aren't in the game - not putting in links because Tumblr hates when I do that:

There is access to what is called the Undercellar in the sewers. It is a network of chambers and cellars housing a sleazy tavern and feasthall spanning under the Upper City and the Wide with multiple access points - one of which is in The Blushing Mermaid, and another in the Duchal Palace.

You can find gray oozes, green slimes, mustard jellies, ochre jellies ghasts, ghouls, phase spiders, a tribe of kobolds led by one called Ratchild, a sentient olive slime named Schlumpsh with devoted sewerfolk followers, sewerfolk I guess, rats, and on occasion gelatinous cubes.

At one point there apparently was an ogre mage who domesticated carrion crawlers to get rid of the bodies of his robbery victims - so I guess carrion crawlers are a possibility too.

There is kind of a purification system in place - it is located in the Seatower district and is a tower complex called Sewer Keep that treats and purify the waste that left the city's sewer system before emptying it out into the River Chionthar.

Headcanons:

Not directly related to the sewers but Jaheira makes an offhand comment in the epilogue about rebuilding even though "the next dragon attack" could take out part of the city - or something along those lines - but it makes me think the city rebuilds parts of the city maybe not regularly, but often enough that people joke about it. So I feel a good portion of the city would have more "modern" (for them) amenities.

Chamber pots were used during times when sewers did not exist as the solution for what to do with waste. Rural areas, small towns, and the Outer City districts lacking a sewer system would still use these - but not major cities like Baldur's Gate.

Meaning I feel most people, especially those in newer or more recently rebuilt parts of the city, will have some kind of actual toilet that empties into the sewer - though they probably have to flush by pouring water down it.

I do think most of the Outer City will not have sewer access except for Blackgate and maybe Rivington. Blackgate because it is used by merchants coming in from Waterdeep and is right up against the Upper City, Rivington because it also is what visitors see first when they enter the city.

Wyrm's Crossing absolutely does not have a sewer and a good chunk of people dump their chamber pots into the Chionthar river below - the city discourages this.

I imagine there's a small population of gelatinous cubes in the main city's sewer, but is kept in check thanks to everything else that is in the sewers.

The city more than likely hires adventurers from time to time to 'clean out' the sewers of monsters. I feel most cities with large sewer systems would do this.

There are other hidden buildings and temples under Baldur's Gate, but because sanitation workers/architects have a will to live most days, if they come across something like that, they leave it be. This is also why they hire kobolds for much of the maintenance and cleaning.

The Guild has a significant amount of control over the sewer - both over those that live in the sewer as well as in the political/architectural control over it.

The sewer sees a significant amount of traffic due to the Guild, secret societies, hidden temples, adventurers, and people who need/want to meet secretly that - unless some kind of peace keeper catches you - no one is going to bat an eye when they see someone entering or exiting the sewer.

The sewer is a bit of a labyrinth, but those that live down there have made up a code system that they can scratch/paint on walls to help navigate.

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on

-Copia is not Papa Nihil's son!!!!!! He might believe he is but he is not!!!! Imperator is his mother but Nihil is NOT THE DAD. I mean when Copia was FIRST INTRODUCED Imperator pointed out that Nihil has no more sons and it was time for new blood to lead the church!!!!!! 😤😡

12. Crack headcanon

-Papa Emeritus 1 collects haunted dolls and repairs them. He uses a Ouija board to get them to pick things like eye colour and hair colour (he's watched a lot of rerooting tutorials!), and many of them are ao happy with his handiwork that they choose to stay in the doll instead of haunting the church. 1 is also a huge Jimmy Buffet fan.

13. Dumbest thing they’ve ever done

-Papa III once picked a mushroom off of a mold ghoul* and ate it, assuming he would trip. And trip he did. He tripped so hard and so bad that for six days after he could not get up from the floor, afraid that if he let go of the carpet of his room he would float away in to space.

27. Their guilty pleasure

-No such thing within the walls of the church!

*(Mold ghouls are the occasional Earth ghoul that comes through the summoning circle and does not show the infernally imbued ability to commune and coax sunlight-based plants like Earth ghouls tend to do. Instead, they have a knack for cultivating various molds, slimes, and fungi on their forms. They cloister in the catacombs and manage the cheese cave. Special says "the moldy guys are a bit weird, y'know, as far as ghouls go. They're a good bunch though! They glow in the dark!! I wish all us ghouls could do that!!")

I'm honored to have been thought of for this 🥰🥰🥰 Honestly, I lost interest in fanspaces after college and even before then I've never really been an active tumblr/social media in general user. Personality

Horrley's personality reflects that of the park itself. Fun-loving, bubbly, energetic, and oh so theatrical. She has a very showman-like demeanor, and is overall pretty hammy. She has a rather tomboyish and sassy side too, often using slang terms like "bub".

However she does a aggressive and beastly side to her, especially when pinched or otherwise irritated, and can occasionally get physical. She also does have a habit of holding grudges against others, such as journalists. There are also times when she is gets overdramatic over little things.

Trivia/Additional Information

Horrley's name is based on the name "Harley" combined with the word "Horror" Her last name, "Emcee" comes from the term MC, which means "Master of Ceremonies".

Her favorite food is based off the ice cream seen on the cover of the Goosebumps 2000 book: "Return to HorrorLand", with the gooseberry toppings also referencing the respective series, as well as resembling the green slime often associated with said series. It's name is a pun on the ice cream flavor "Cherries Jubilee"

Horrley's relationship with Gooliope isn't just because of similar aesthetics and themes. Freak du Chic occasionally does shows at HorrorLand!

Her hairstyle was based off of Pinkie Pie's from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, specifically how the curls were drawn.

Her birthday is October 25th, which is the day the first part of the "One Day at HorrorLand" two-parter episode of the Goosebumps TV series was aired on Fox Kids. This makes her a Scorpio.

Horrley's headcanon voice is Katie Crown who voiced Izzy from the Total Drama series. A series, which just like the Goosebumps TV series, was produced in Canada.

CCG notes: While his shield-type kagune pieces are strong, the other two pieces that he has are extra soft and easily breakable. Note that his shield-type kagune form much more slowly than his attack-type kagune, so attack him while all his kagune pieces are still soft and in formation stage. Watch for his typical three pronged attack: ‘takedown’ with the top two kagune pieces and ‘pincer’. The name badgerbear comes from this signature fighting style. However, be aware that he has a wide variety of fighting techniques that he may have not revealed. His kill count is somewhere between fifteen and fifty. Signature marks on his victims are similar to that of other ghouls, although he appears to favor luring his targets to dark alleyways and killing them in quick, successive strikes with his kagune.

Slime- What kinds of monsters are off-the-table for you, or what monsters squick you out?

Zombies,ghouls, and undead things with flesh bits coming off. THE SMELL for one. 2 what if their skin just comes off inside you like bleh.

Succubus- What are some of your favorite sexual monster scenarios or headcanons? Big bara orc getting dommed by me. And Big soft orc domming me. Also like.. THIRSTY sex. Like you can’t wait to make it home kind of sex. You meet up for dinner in a fancy restaurant and end up fucking in their fancy ass bathroom kind of sex.

Werewolf- What’s one monster from a book/movie/etc that you find attractive? Durotan from warcraft was hot. But to be honest? Splice’s monster was pretty neat too.(I was thinking back and I hadn’t thought about monster’s love life until this movie.) Not my ‘type’ persay but like..it’s a dark movie with a ton of scenes in it I wouldn’t recommend to tumblr but it basically tells the life, and death, of a monster.

Dragon- How did you first find out that you were into monsters? 

Idk man. I think it was the tentacle porn but tbh i’ve always found the monster characters more beautiful. Not at first but when you get to know them? Their personalities? Way better than a lot of humans I know that’s for sure.

Siren- What are some of your favorite ‘fluffy’ monster scenarios or headcanons? 

I’m not big into cuddling unless it’s aftercare/ before bed cuddling. So my favorite fluff is when a monster gives gifts because they were thinking of you or it reminded them of you. THAT makes my insides jelly.

Slime- What kinds of monsters are off-the-table for you, or what monsters squick you out? 

I’ve never been into hairy monsters? Maybe because I don’t like being to hot. I’d prefer to be cold. monsters who can transform into humans are a no-go to me too. It’s like being two-faced? I don’t like it, can’t deal with it, and wouldn’t go after them. As for squicks? Zombies, ghouls, ect. I just imagine holding their hand and it pops off or the flesh slides off, the smell, the whole flesh sliding off while banging. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE

Werewolf- What’s one monster from a book/movie/etc that you find attractive? 

Durotan, draka, the thing, tmnt turtles....I know I said I don’t like furies but The new rendition of the beast from beauty and the beast, hank from x men, night crawler from x men, killer croc, Turians, krogan, angara, drell, all from mass effect. OH! THIS SAID ONE. Whoops. Oh well.
