so. totally unrelated fandom post.
i've only seen the first episode of the wizards of waverly place sequel (wizards beyond waverly place) but i have thoughts. the basic premise of the show is that justin russo has settled down with a non-wizarding wife (giada), has two kids, and has become an ordinary middle school teacher after being fired from wiztech. his life is upturned when his sister, alex, drops round with a delinquent young girl named billy who needs help learning magic—and, oh yeah, she's supposedly part of some big prophecy to save the world.
so far, all i've seen is criticism of the characters and the show in general, but i think a lot of it is unfair. i'll concede that replicating the character dynamics from the original show (with giada as theresa, justin as jerry, billy as alex, roman as justin, milo as max, etc) was a bad move, but justin's character in particular has received a lot of flack that i, personally, find unreasonable.
people say that justin wouldn't dare give up being a wizard; that the trajectory of his life makes no sense given his love of magic. but life doesn't always work out the way we imagine, even with meticulous planning and preparedness. we can't forget that justin's own father was very much the same; that jerry was a very skilled wizard who loved magic and could never imagine giving it up. given that, i think it makes sense for justin's character to settle down with a non-magical wife and become a school principal. he held on to magic the longest of the three siblings because he defined himself by his skill with it, but he learned, as he aged, that magic wasn't everything.
besides, seeing justin lose his magical lifestyle as his ages only to reclaim it again at the start of this series is a great, if obvious, analogy for what happens to most of us as we age. even those who hold on tightest to their younger years can find themselves losing the the magic felt in childhood; we have to reach out and take it back for ourselves. children are sometimes the best ones at showing us what we have lost, hence: justin teaches magical children and in doing so rediscovers his own magic.
(side note: being a middle school principal suits him for obvious reasons: his love of learning, love of rules, love of wonder. the whole "being fired from wiztech because of an incident with a unicorn" also makes sense to me because, as much as alex learned from him, he learned from alex, too.)
i have nothing to say about alex's character because selena gomez came back and fucking crushed it. the biggest problem is the delivery of the prophecy: she just drops it like "hey billy's the only one who can save the world" and then leaves. now, do i think this is bad writing? yes. but i also think it would make sense if this was utter bullshit; if alex only said this to justin to ensure he really, truly enveloped himself back into the magical world because she knows just how much he misses it. (it's just a prank, bro!)
what would i have changed? i'd probably have made it so that alex had a kid like justin, and justin had a kid like alex. i would not give justin two boys as i don't think that does anything for his character. i would include both jerry and harper, as their actors have a goddamn podcast about the show and deserve to be included. (not to mention how jerry's character, in mirroring justin's, could be very informative for the whole plot.) also, justin's wife? she's fine, but please at least address what happened to juliet. was it the whole "i'm a vampire and i don't grow old but you do" thing? because that only adds to the reasoning behind justin giving up his magical lifestyle.
(also, and this is a tiny thing, but people are wondering how justin the principal and his investigative reporter wife can afford their house? and, HELLO, we get told that max is now a billionaire—thanks to his sandwich enterprise, i think. he would've totally bought them a house after giada convinced justin to accept it.)
#idk if i've articulated myself well here#anyway.#the biggest difference is that justin's wife never knew about magic#idk what i think about that yet#justin russo#wizards beyond waverly place#wizards of waverly place#(i can't believe i wrote this many words on wowp. geez)

I honestly think Doctor Who should be cancelled at this point.
Because if you’re not going to bother fixing any of the actual problems with the show and you’re just going to keep going back to the same faces and ideas over and over again instead of branching out and finding new talent with a new creative direction and artistic vision, then why are we even fucking bothering at this point? The viewership is tanking, any goodwill has been completely eroded, and nobody gives a shit anymore.
There’s just something so sad and pathetic watching RTD at San Diego Comic Con glomming onto Star Trek like a fucking parasite in a desperate attempt to prove to himself and the audience that his Doctor Who ‘relaunch’ wasn’t the total train wreck it actually was. And I notice that’s something of a recurring theme throughout SDCC this year. Kevin Feige and the Russos announcing RDJ as Doctor Doom. James Gunn promoting his new DC Universe in the manner of a bored executive at a shareholder’s meeting. Alex Kurtzman being… Alex Kurtzman. It’s the endpoint of corporatised nerd culture. Middle aged businessmen who are completely out of touch with modern audiences, desperately trying to stay relevant in a cultural zeitgeist that’s rapidly passing them by. They want to make good movies and TV shows, but they can’t because they’re fundamentally untalented people who care more about making money than about making art. It’s not about entertainment, but rather about “engagement.” RTD himself said the quiet part out loud in an interview on Doctor Who Unleashed. It’s no longer about telling stories, but about “generating content.”

I like the idea of Max being the kid's main magic teacher as a call back to Jerry Russo being magicless but also the most knowledgeable. Like obviously Alex and Justin are amazing magicians and Justin is literally a school headmaster. But Alex has chaotic teaching methods and Justin sticks to the school curriculum when teaches. Max on the other hand is more loose but also more street smart. Think right in the middle of Justin and Alex teaching style. He teaches the kids practical magic, workarounds for magic problems, and most importantly to Max. What to do when you can't rely on magic to solve everything.
In fact this would be a good way to lead people away from Max sabotaging the games. He advocates so much for teaching magicless solutions, why would he sabotage the games for everyone to keep their magic. Because to Max it isn't about him or the fact he lost his magic. He quite literally doesn't care, I don't think he would want his magic back. What matters is the people he cares about losing their magic.
Yeah like!
Justin is probably too busy for one on one lessons. Like ofc he spends time with his kids, but not enough to take over their Wizard Education.
I could see Alex being busy too. Or maybe just a bit more nervous about it due to her overall persona/history. Like when it comes to kids she's still kinda very 'oh god I'm a disaster how can I be responsible for a child???' and while it calmed a bit considering she does have a kid of her own and went through All That™ when the kid was first born, it does pop up from time to time so teaching the kids how to be Wizards is A Big Thing that gets the worry going.
And then yeah Max is. Might be mortal now but he did still learn all the things to be a full Wizard even he didn't win. He's a touch out of practice ofc but still good and less worried about his ability to teach.
And yeah he'd. It's not about him losing his own Magic. He honestly doesn't care either way. It's about the principal of the thing. The unfairness of the system. The way families can get torn apart and some people /do/ mourn the loss of their Magic.

This is not exactly a prompt, but, more of an idea... do you guys know @artzychic27 's @so-were-heroes 's AU where all musical characters are around the same age, go to the same class and get a miraculous?
Imagine something like that... but with Original Disney Channel series protagonists! Like, Teddy from Good Luck Charlie, Liv and Maddie, K.C. Cooper, Harley Diaz (Stuck in the Middle), Cyd and Shelby (Best friends whenever), Paige and Frankie (Bizaardvark), Maya and Riley (Girl Meets World, although, maybe this one isn't a good idea).
And the ones from the older generation (Miley Stuart, Alex Russo and Zack and Cody) could be teachers.
If there isn't enough cast, maybe, thrown even some Nicklodeons shows there too: Drake and Josh, Icarly, Victorious, Every Witch Way, the Thudermans, Haunted Hatwhays, 100 things to do, and so on... (although, maybe this one deserve it's own AU).
I don't know, I just think it would be neat.

Finished watching ep. 1 WOPW reboot and it's...ok.
It gave is an insight on what the Russo family is up to in the past 10+ years. Justin getting fired from Wiztech and being a middle school vice principal Alex still being the family wizard and Max being a billionaire (although knowing Max, I bet that happened by accident).
It was good to see Justin and Alex interacting again and that while Alex is the family wizard and now part of the tribunal, she still looks up to Justin as someone who can solve anything.
It was also really nice to see the lair again, so many things happened in that lair, so many good memories.
I do really hope that Max comes back one day, it'll be really nice to see the Russo siblings together again.

Please share your top 5 favourite female fictional characters.
Interesting question!
Despite the impression I may have given with this blog, I'm more of a story person than a character one. To me what matters is the story in its entirety but I'll give it a try.
(they aren't in any particular order)
Alex Russo
I always say Selena Gomez raised me with this character. Alex was such a fascinating female character. At the time, but still to this day honestly, it was such a rare thing to have a female character that was genuinely funny. It's like women aren't allowed to be the fun character for some reason. And she was so flawed but always learned from her mistakes. She was lazy, beautiful, flirty, good, and a bit vindictive. She was what usually only male characters are allowed to be: human.
Katniss Everdeen
I have to confess, for some reason, I've never read The Hunger Games books (but I plan to remedy that). But in middle school, I was completely obsessed with the movies. The angsty teen that I was loved Katniss to death, her stoicism, her strength. An absolute icon. Made me develop an obsession with braids. What I've always loved the most about her character is that she is truly a hero of the people. (something JKR was never quite able to do with Harry)
Ginny Weasley
Her majesty. Queen of my heart and soul. It's funny when I think about before I read the books, I couldn't stand Ginny in the movies, I was so confused by her. And look at me now. She is an icon. She is so unbelievably strong but in such a human way. Ridiculously stubborn and reckless. Profoundly compassionate but determined to put boundaries with people. The sweetest and yet the harshest. She is hilarious and wise. An immensely progressive feminist character when you think about when she was written and that she is the love interest of the main character (and frankly I'm not sure how that happened). A character that has still a lot to say to this day. And also breaks that idiotic pattern of the hero ending up with the helper. Ginny is truly a character who deserves her own saga. But probably what I like most about her, as weird as it may sound, is that she is written with such coherence (that considering who wrote her it's not that obvious). Everything falls into place. Every action, everything she says makes sense, every change is justified, and she has proper arcs of narration. Small details from early books get unveiled as main aspects of her. She is like a well-built mystery novel.
Amy March
I do love strong women who are a bit messy. Amy goes from being a stubborn egocentric (but in such an endearing way if you ask me) young girl to a strong compassionate mindful woman. She is ready to put her family before herself, she is wise, and she is conscious of who she is and the society she lives in. There's this silent strength to her but also an ability to truly enjoy life to its fullest I believe that it's really remarkable. And she grows up to be quite self-aware which is something I always love in a character.
Miranda Priestly
And now a villain. The Devil Wears Prada is one if not my favourite movie. I really really love a villain who enjoys being a villain. Who owns up to being a villain. And when they do it while being a fashion icon it's even better. She is truly competent at what she does, she is harsh and witty and while she has a high opinion of herself it's not only justified but it doesn't obscure her judgment in recognising and appreciating greatness in others. I do love it when villains and heroes come to respect one another.

So, I've been coming across a lot of clips of Wizards of Waverly Place on tik tok. I'm sure all the 2000s kids remember that show. Selena Gomez was the ish back then (and she still is). Usually, I would go back and re-watch some episodes just to get that good nostalgic feel. But I REFUSE to watch the later seasons! They just end up getting on my nerves! Plus, my moods are always ruined when Justin Russo shows his face.
Okay, it's mainly the fact that Alex is always getting blamed for almost every single conflict that occurs. I'm not gonna say it's never her fault, cuz she does have her moments, but sometimes when she uses magic, it's mostly with good intentions, just played out wrong. And she usually owns up to her mistakes and makes sure to fix the problem. But it's like, EVERYBODY is ALWAYS calling her out and most of the time, it's not even fully her fault! It gets worse to the point where her own freakin parents start to love her best friend more than their own daughter and they always compare her to Justin, saying that he's a much better kid and he would never cause trouble!! Do they not realize how bad they make her feel when they do that, and they are supposed to be the parents? They're supposed to be more mature and wise for their kids, but all they really do is pick favorites and compare one kid to the other. They rarely even stick up for her or praise her when she really deserved it.
The only traits Alex has that are bad about her are that she's selfish and mean. Like I said, she has her moments, but she has good intentions. She's the main one to fix any problems that occur to the Russos' and was the main one to save the world several times- WHERE'S HER THANK YOU?? She doesn't get one, just more trash talk and finger-pointing from Justin and her parents.
And y'all know Justin always gotta the first to rub it in her face and play the blame game.
Justin wasn't even that bad in the early seasons. I actually tolerated him a little bit (though he still annoyed me). But in the later seasons, he just becomes more selfish, vindictive, antagonistic, and just plain cruel. He didn't even wanna show his full support for his sister when she won wizard of the year. In fact, he was more jealous, berating and disrespecting Alex, complaining that he should've won. But like sir- you don't even deserve that title. Like wha- You put your own family in danger, TWICE!! Not once, but TWICE!! And who was the one to save even you from that danger? ALEX!!
Justin had a crush on a dark angel. Loved her so much, he joined the side of the Angels of Darkness and let them take over. Not only did he put the world in danger, he also put his own family in danger! And all because he was such a simp for this one girl!! And guess who had to save his a**!
There was another situation the Russos' got involved in, and the show makes it seem like it was Alex's fault when Justin was the one that caused the problem. Like that time when Justin revealed to the FBI that wizards exist and that he, along with his family was one of the few. He got NO repercussions for it as far as I've heard. But when Alex is the one to confess to the media that they're wizards, and only to fix the situation that was happening, she is the one to get blamed when originally, Justin was the first to spill the tea.
I could name plenty of more reasons why Justin didn't deserve the wizard of the year award, but those are just my main ones.
I don't think he felt genuinely bad about the way he spoke about her at all. The only time he did feel bad is when it came time for his video about Alex to be shown to everyone during that ceremony. He probably didn't even wanna admit he was wrong for it. He is such a horrible brother!!! He really needed a good talking-to after all that. Theresa and Jerry, that's where you should've come in!
And then we have the finale where they're in the middle of the Wizard Competition. Harper and Zeke get themselves in danger and are captured by a griffin, and who was the main one that suggested they go and save them? Alex! She literally had to beg Justin to help save them, but Justin, being the selfish prick that he is was more concerned about staying in the competition and winning. It is beyond ridiculous that Alex had to beg Justin to save his best friend! Didn't even care that his best friend might die!! By the time they came back, their free time had run out and they got disqualified, losing their magic powers. Leave it to Justin to play the blame game and point fingers at Alex like he always does. He didn't even care that it was a matter of his friends' safety, he cared more about being a wizard and winning a stupid competition. And there was also a scene in that same episode while they were working, Alex was giving someone their order and Justin threw something at her, causing her to drop the order on the customer! Like dude- are you serious?? Are you that pressed???
Theresa, Jerry... do you still think Justin is the better kid? Even after Alex risked her life/her happiness, putting her selfish wants aside to help and save others?
And then there's Max, bro!! For some reason, he starts to gang up on Alex too. Pointing fingers at her as well for doing the right thing. Omg, this girl just can't get enough. And usually, people felt more bad for Max as well, believing he doesn't get enough appreciation and recognition as a wizard in the family, but he really annoyed me in this episode!! He was mainly just following Justin, being horrible to Alex too. Even if he didn't get to keep his powers, I didn't feel bad for him one bit! It's not like he was gonna win the competition or keep his powers anyway and he probably knew that!!
What made me more pissed is that Theresa and Jerry didn't even stick up for Alex. They see that Justin and Max are ganging up on her, belittling her and just letting it happen. Then saying stuff like, "You guys seriously need to get it together and stop all this fighting!"
You guys??! Alex is the victim here! She did not deserve any of this disrespect! She was casually working and Justin threw something at her because of his resentment, y'know, like a mature adult. And Max came at her just because! Why aren't y'all criticizing Justin or Max for their behavior? They were the main ones acting up!
It doesn't even help that Alex had to be the one to apologize at the end of the episode....
Y'all, Alex was the only one to apologize!!
"Guys, I'm sorry for getting you to help me save our friends from a bloodthirsty monster instead of staying and competing in the competition. Because having our magic and being a family wizard is much more important than Harper and Zeke's safety."
She didn't say those exact words, but she might as well have. I don’t understand how Alex could put up with all that disrespect. If I was her, I probably would’ve left the family and probably never come back. I might just make a fanfiction about that.
I feel like I can point out plenty of reasons why the show just faltered a little to me, but Imma just leave it at that for now. All in all, Justin's a horrible brother and a horrible character. Max, I agree he deserves better too, but he mainly just got on my nerves that one episode. Teresa and Jerry are terriblev parents and didn't raise their kids right. Alex especially deserved better and Harper is the realist, point blank.

{ closed event starter for @drvcxrys ; alex russo & justin russo }
justin leaned into the table so he could focus. he was in the middle of making the best gingerbread house he’s accomplished in a while and wanted to make sure it was built to perfection. “almost there...” he said out loud to no one in particular. “just one final touch.” he held the gumdrop up over the house trying to think of a place to put it.

What is the Most Popular Disney Channel Show?
You may be wondering what the most popular show from Disney Channel is? Well, in this post, we are going to find out what that show actually is. When researching this question, I found out that Wizards of Waverly Place is the most popular show that ever aired on Disney Channel.
Wizards of Waverly Place is the only show to win an Emmy award for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program in 2010. According to Buzzfeed, they won the award for the writing, the world-building, the magical qualities, and the ensemble cast lifted the Disney Channel to new heights. Selena Gomez is the big star in Wizards of Waverly Place. Her character in the show is Alex Russo. Wizards of Waverly Place is an American fantasy teen sitcom created by Todd J. Greenwald. The show first aired in October 2007. Alex Russo is the middle child of a Latino family. The Russo siblings come from a long line of wizards, and they have to master the newly learned powers to battle in the Family Wizard Competition. The winner of the Family Wizard Competition gets to keep their powers forever. Their father, Jerry gave up his powers of the family wizards to marry their mortal mother, Theresa. The family has a business called Waverly Sub Station located in the busy Manhattan area of New York. The three young wizards, Alex, Justin, and Max, get into all kinds of crazy situations as they face growing up with having the secret of them all being wizards while facing school, friends, family and even magic. The show ended January 6, 2012 for four seasons with one hundred and six episodes.

S2 ep31 SEASON FINAL
Jerry's younger brother, Kelbo visits before the lesson begins. Kelbo informs Jerry that he, Jerry, and unfortunately Megan have to retake the Wizards Test due to a technicality. If all of them do not take the test, the Russo Family will lose their powers forever including the kids. Alex, Justin, and Max try to convince their aunt Megan Russo, who stopped speaking to her brothers after Jerry gave his powers to Kelbo and not her, to retake the test. They succeed but Alex lies that her brothers were going to apologize to her, so she leaves.
The kids and adults are also compared to each other. Alex to Megan, Kelbo to Max, and Justin to Jerry, and Harper to Theresa. With Megan refusing to forgive her brothers and to retake the test, there seems to be no hope left. Realizing that this Wizard competition is starting to tear her, Justin, and Max apart just like Jerry, Kelbo and Megan, Alex gets the family to stick together and much to their relief the official lets them keep their powers since he has never seen a wizarding family so united. In the end, Justin tells Alex that she is nothing like Megan because she apologized and that's something Megan never learned how to do.
During the credits, Kelbo is calling Megan, just like in Alex in the Middle, but lets Alex do it. She says, "Um, excuse me, is your refrigerator working?" Megan answers by saying "Alex, I know it's you. I can see Kelbo's wand number on my caller ID," stating this as her last appearance.
Ah the season finale
The episode in which we learn that if their father and his siblings don’t retake the test, the kids also lose their powers
That the competetion has torn multiple familys apart
That the magic comes from some tubes in the wall
That the kids have an aunt they never knew about
Ok so Alex absolutely calling out how corrupt all that sounds and also making a joke of “I’d like to seem them try to take my powers”
I think Megan should at the very least consider taking the test when she finds out that if she doesn’t her niblings will also suffer because of it, I also feel like this could be around the time when at least Alex starts not liking the magic council and the competetion
Also the whole getting power from tubes in the wall should be changed at least, and I remember that officially the episode ended with them legally being powerless but still having their powers or something, and I think it would be fun to have this season end with the kids going on the run, and also hint at the wizard council building a power nullifier or something to steak Alex’s power and even hint at them sabotaging the competition to have Alex lose
Like there’s a movie between season 2 and 3, I think it would be interesting to have the season 2 final build up to it
YEAH HONETLY LIEK
I think I want their Aunt to see that things are more complicated and it's not her brothers' fault for the way the Magic Competition was. She wouldn't have been happy with either brother winning, so she was already bitter when Jerry gave his powers to Kelbo. And while she has understandable jealousy about that, there is some level where she understands why. iirc, Jerry's justification was that he felt that while Megan could become happy and successful without Magic, Kelbo was going to struggle a lot more. And maybe he should have talked more with them but again, there was no 'good' answer here.
So Megan, despite still having some jealousy and bitterness, does stick around longer to try and work things out.
I think it'd be fucking neat to see them re-take the test. So Jerry and Megan temporarily get their powers back. And honestly it gets to be cool because even though they're a bit rusty, Jerry and Megan absolutely keep up with Kelbo. It ends up coming down to straight up luck, which has Jerry win again. But as per rules, he's fine giving up the win to one of the other siblings.
Megan is hesitant at this. Because she could start the argument again. But.... she does realize that yeah she was kind of. Okay. Without Magic. Like yeah she's still upset about having to lose it again. But compared to Kelbo who would be doubly lost without it....
However.
Well.
Given that Alex resisted once, her and her brothers thinking the competition is bullshit, and the older trio also agreeing, there might be some accidental spellcasting going on. Six very powerful Magic Users combined, even accidentally? It's gonna fuck some shit up.
The Council Member that tries to take Jerry and Megan's powers is having trouble. Very obviously having trouble. He makes an excuse of 'technical difficulties' and says he will come back later to take their Magic. Megan is kinda pissed at this prolonging taking her powers away, but decides to enjoy it while it lasts.
We get a final scene the Council quite confused about what is happening, why they can't transfer the Magic back. They try it with another pair of Wizard Siblings who just did their test, and it works fine. So what happened with the Russos?
