Violet in P5X

Sumire Yoshizawa (currently labeled as Kasumi Yoshizawa in-game) is primarily present as a Phantom Idol, or cognitive teammate. She has not yet made any appearance in the main story.

Violet joins for P5R collab's first Laboratory Chapter, having been pulled into the Metaverse unexpectedly with Joker and Mona. This takes place shortly after first awakening her Persona on October 3rd (implied to be somewhere between then and Okumura's change of heart on October 11th).

At first, due to Mona misleading her to mess with Cattle, she attempts to attack Wonder and Cattle when she encounters them in the Metaverse, believing Cattle to be a shadow. However, Joker steps in and explains, and she apologizes profusely. Though she makes it clear she's not a member of the Phantom Thieves and doesn't intend to join them after this, she happily works with the rest of the group, trying to find a way out of this Metaverse pocket.

Later, she admits she's actually glad for the break from reality, as her regular life has been very stressful with all the pressure from Shujin to do well in competitions, and all the judgement from her peers who believe she gets special treatment.

Still, she works with everyone towards getting out (except when her newness to the Metaverse occasionally confuses her), and they manage to take down all the shadows that Mona and Cattle are led to. However, she turns her back on the final shadow and doesn't notice it charging at her, leading Goro Akechi to jump in and save her.

Sumire (still as Kasumi) can also be found in Leblanc in the real world, which Wonder is for some reason capable of crossing worlds to visit. She won’t appear until Wonder has begun the Laboratory Chapter, but has evidently already heard about him from the others. She refers to him as her senpai despite directly stating she's not a phantom thief, and is very friendly. Like the others, she talks about day-to-day topics in her life, as well as occasionally the members of the Phantom Thieves.

Violet’s Persona Cendrillon is categorized as a Bless type, and resists Bless while being weak to Curse.

Cendrillon is a Resist Persona, meaning she’s good at targeting single enemies, and her trait makes it so that her Highlight can critical, and doesn’t consume Highlight energy to use. On any teammate's turn, if Violet has at least two levels of Dance Steps (Courageous and/or Dexterous), the player can activate her Masquerade state, and use her Highlight once. Masquerade lasts until Violet's second turn after activating it, and has a three-round cooldown. In the Masquerade state, each level of Dance Steps increases Violet's attack stat by 10%, and critical rate by 3%. When Masquerade ends, all levels of Dance Steps are cleared.

Her first bless attack skill hits one enemy, and grants one level of Courageous Steps (which can stack up to three times); if this skill is triggered by Violet's Dance Partner, it does less damage, but still grants a level of Courageous Steps. Her support skill lets the player select a teammate to be her Dance Partner for one round, granting a buff to both Violet and the chosen teammate's attack stats for three rounds, and Violet also gains one level of Dexterous Steps (does not stack); when her Dance Partner uses any Persona skill, Violet follows up with her first bless attack skill, on either the main enemy they targeted, or a random enemy if they didn't target any enemies. Her second bless attack skill hits one enemy, doing additional damage and having a higher critical effect if used in the Masquerade state. Her passive skills make it so that each level of Dance Steps also buffs her bless damage dealt, and, after a teammate uses their Highlight, Violet's attack stat is buffed for two rounds.

As in P5R, her melee weapons are rapiers, while her ranged weapon is an antique rifle. Her Highlight is shown from 0:20 - 0:45 in this video, and it deals bless damage to one enemy; every level of Courageous Steps buffs the damage by 10%, and a level of Dextrous Steps buffs its critical hit rate and effect.

Her recommended card sets are 1) 3 of Wands (Virtue) + Page of Swords (Wisdom), 2) 4 of Coins (Power) + Page of Coins (Growth).

The game recommends teaming her up with 1) Chord, 2) Joker, 3) Bui.

The metaverse isn't real, and all of them grew up with qualms about how some people get away with everything. And, eventually, they all get the push they need to stop being a bystander and become Phantom Thieves

They all live in the same building, and have a secret lair under it. They pose as normal people with jobs and lives and then at night they're plastering evidence of assaulters all over Shibuya, or leaking videos of insider trading or what's on someone's hardrive

Sometimes they do normal crime like stealing from the rich to fund their bigger operations. Just for fun

Okay let's go down the list

Akira works as a bartender in a fancy hotel bar, and goes home to his "wife", Haru, each night. That's how it appears, at least. As a fresh graduate from secondary school, he ended up coming together with some friends to expose a shitty pervert for who he was, and thus began their lives as the Phantom Thieves. Joker is the ringleader, and known publicly to always be listening from the shadows

Then there's Ryuji, a middle school phys Ed teacher, married to Makoto. It's perceived to be a functioning marriage. He was a founding Thief, and is their Rough'em'up guy. Between Skull and Queen, they get their answers when they want them

Ann is next, wed to Yusuke, working as a model. Mysteriously, the guest room at their place seems to always be occupied by former top athlete Shiho. Ann's love for her best friend was one of the main flames behind the beginning of the Thieves, and Panther is key at tricking their enemies into drinking a spiked drink or spilling secrets for a moment with the attractive blonde

Okay now, Yusuke, he came later. Yeah married to Ann blah blah. He's an artist, paints in a studio all day. His former mentor drove him to the brink, but luckily the Thieves found him there, and gave him the power to drag himself back to his feet. Fox is very feared, as his harsh words and quick moves remind his enemies of an old samurai

Makoto was once looking like she would be another young officer on the streets, doomed to being beat down by the system. Now, she owns a gym a block from where she lives with her husband Ryuji, and moonlights as the fast driving, hard hitting Thief Queen. The only thing that burns brighter than her rage at the failing society around her is her homosexuality.

Software engineer Futaba lives alone, and she likes it that way, supposedly. She's gotten her act together, again, supposedly, and is no longer hacking. Yeah right. After taking down the false shepherd Medjed, Oracle does the computer work for the Thieves, keeping them in the know during missions

The final standard member of the Thieves, Haru, didn't exist until recently. Well, under the name Haru. She used to live as the sole son of the CEO of Okumura Foods, and has found a life that suits her much better. As Haru, she runs a bakery just outside the entrance of her apartment building, and lives with her husband, Akira. As Noir, she's more than willing to show that actions have consequences, though she's often aware enough to keep her act to just frightening rather than deadly

Then it's the half members, Goro and Sumire. They're legally married. One is a top tier detective, the other teaches youth gymnastics. Crow and Violet appear maybe once every other month at most, filling the roles the teams those nights need

Roserade represents violet in a sense and how she’s a knight figure as a phantom thief

Musharna - there to represent her trauma and maruki’s brain washing (I’ll explain this in more detail once I get the dex entries)

Slyveon - Probably Kasumi’s pokèmon and it stuck with her because it saw how much her sisters death effected her (I’d say sumire would have an umbreon if not)

Togepi - Represents her stages of growth, would evolve each time she makes a big step forward into her new life

Frillish - Again represents Kasumi’s death and everything she went through with maruki (god we love ghost types and phantom thieves)

One of the things about Sumire that Atlus should've done was change her phantom thief outfit when she had her true Awakening. Like. Yes, Sumire's whole character arc and confidant ranks 6-10 are about her trying to find/regain her identity as Sumire Yoshizawa when she's been (unintentionally) masquerading as Kasumi for like 1-2 years, and that's fine (except for the fact that it's horribly integrated into the story up until the third semester, and even in the third semester she takes a backseat to Maruki's character development). But her Violet fit only makes sense while she thinks she's Kasumi because she's pretending to be someone else and will continue to pretend to be other people instead of embracing herself for who she is. When she awakened for realsies in Maruki's palace, she should've gotten a completely new and unique fit to show that she's coming into herself and accepting her identity as her own. Akechi got a sick costume change when he decided to show the thieves who he really was. Why can't Sumire get the same treatment??

Her Persona is Cinderella. Her story is about disguising herself as another person to gain acceptance.

Her persona is Cendrillon, the French name for Cinderella and the name of an opera based on the story, and it mirrors her arc in the game. When you boil her down to the essentials, she essentially made a wish that was granted by her....... fairy godtherapist to go from pauper (bland and talentless depressed Sumire) to princess (her dead sister Kasumi, bubbly, personable star gymnast). As far as she sees it, even, it's this transformation that helps her 'get the prince' (read: befriend the protagonist). Why should she win, though? Umm because she's my baby my angel my sweetie my cherub specialist character in fiction and most important girl in the universe. Out of love in your heart for me, tumblr user [REDACTED], vote for her.

GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH ok ok ok everyone here's my autism. Major spoilers as you get closer to the end btw! - She has three personas, in order they go: Cendrion, Vanadis, Ella. The first and last are taken from Cinderella, with Cendrion being the german name for Cinderella, and of course Ella just being a shortened form of Cinderella. - She does gymnastics, although a lot of her phantom thief design is heavily based off of ballet as well! In particular the black swan mimicking the white swan, and while of course that's not cinderella, it does remind me of how Cinderella was treated in the beginnings of the story - Cinderella and her both have major sibling trauma! It's a huge point about her character. Major spoilers, but she pretends to be her older sister Kasumi for most of the game; the sad truth is that she's in fact the younger sister Sumire. She's pretending to be her older sister because she can't deal with the trauma of that day she ran out into traffic and her sister got hit instead of her. (It does not help that her therapist uses eldritch god powers to gaslight her into thinking she is her sister.) - They're both pretty and also I love sumi so much she's everything to me. unironically the character of all time NOT FOR PROPAGANDA but for mod: image because it can be awkward to find one: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/UyOsg26GnZU/maxresdefault.jpg also!!!! if you're interested in not potentially spoiling people you should call her Kasumi Yoshizawa. If you aren't worried about that though and want to be accurate, Sumire Yoshizawa is better. Or just call her Violet because that's her codename!

Initially introduced as Kasumi, she is a dorky and sweet first-year student who looks up to the protagonist as a mentor and eventually joins the Phantom Thieves in figuring out the fake reality they're trapped in. However, it's revealed that she's actually Kasumi's sister Sumire, who was always stuck in her more talented sister's shadow and yearned to be Kasumi. Unfortunately, she got her wish when her sister died saving her and her therapist brainwashed her into believing herself to be Kasumi. With help from the protagonist, Sumire realizes she was holding herself back and breaks free from her false identity, embracing her true self and rebelling against the hollow utopia. Her initial Persona--an embodiment of her true self--is Cendrillon, and her third tier ultimate Persona is Ella.

Sumire dosen't just pretends to be her dead sister, she was brainwashed into believing to be her by the final act's main villain/her fairy godfather figure, because that was her (misguided by trauma) wish as she believed that her sister was better than her. The final acts has a lot of 'making wishes come true' theme that connects her to Cinderella even more, also she does have a bit of 'save by the prince' thing going on with the game's protagonist

her own movie screwed her over so bad so i need her to win at least one thing in her life ☹️ avoiding spoilers but once upon a crime cinderella is so kind and hardworking (and a hopeless romantic aww) and like damn let a girl fight back !!!!

Phantom Thief outfit breakdown: pt 4

This is a continuation of my previous post and series regarding my opinions on the phantom thieves' metaverse costumes, prompted by a poll by @waywardsalt. I will like all of these together as they're finished.

Akechi - Ann - Makoto - Futaba - Yusuke - Akechi 2

Next on the docket is Sumire, as her outfit is another I have very strong opinions on.

My main gripe with Sumire's outfit is that, by and large, its NOT her costume, as thus her idea of justice personified, its JOKER'S. The real-world reasoning for this is because she's the mascot and marketing character for Persona 5 Royal specifically and thus must match the promotional material, which is the thematic black and red, but it does drive me up the wall that this character, whose entire arc is learning to be and embrace herself and not cling to idealized versions of the people she loves as things to mimic and mold herself into, has a costume based entirely on another character's costume. This outfit tells me nothing about her except that she admires Joker and is probably romanceble.

Firstly, I would make efforts to incorporate an additional motif to her overall design inspiration. Her design is largely lacking them as it follows Joker's theme but lets go of many of his gentleman thief and Arsene Lupin inspirations in its desire to be more feminine. My preference is either for more fairytale/Cinderella motifs, to match her persona, or to add an element of the black swan from swan lake, as it would be a nice bit of foreshadowing to the way she's pretending to be Kasumi for confidence and validation, like how Odile impersonates Odette to charm the prince.

I would change up the leotard a bit. As it is, it's very basic, which I think is a disservice since we see her prettier leotards for competitions. I would add the skirt and some of the filigree decorations of her competition leotard, which only appears very briefly as Sumire mostly wears Kasumi's pink one instead of her own blue, and which provides some delicacy and a nod to her status as a gymnast to the outfit, as well as tying her to Cendrillon stylistically.

If you wanted to lean into the black swan motif, you could instead have the leotard incorporate feather embroidery or an edge that looks like primary feathers (the stiff ones, not loose like down).

I would also make the stockings a lighter color and make the ribbons on her shoes more obvious and climb higher on her legs. They are an interesting detail that gets lost against the similar color of the tights, which is really a shame, as they tie in nicely to her position as a rhythmic gymnastic specifically, which we can tell she is because her of her dance-like routines and the involvement of the ribbon over elements such as the bar or trampoline. Again, it would also play nicely into a ballet and specifically a swan lake theme. I also don't love the heels but I don't have anything specific in mind to replace them, so they can stay for now.

If you want a really big change, I would go with a color palette overhaul. If you incorporate more blues or pinks over the red, or the violet that's her literally code name, I think it would freshen her up and make her stand out a little more. Maybe you could even lighten her base color to a grey or a very dark purple if you really want to drift from game colors. I'd say go all the way and make the black elements white, but that wouldn't contrast well enough against Maruki's palace enough to stand out and would make her monochromatic in a way equally bad to the monochromatic she is now.

Overall, most of my problems with this outfit stem from the fact that it has so little of her personality (or even Kasumi's) and so much of Joker's for branding reasons, and think that the incorporation of another theme or a change in color palette would really do it some justice. If they had acknowledged that her outfit was modeled after Joker's and tweaked it during her second (true) awakening, I would have been happy with that, but they didn't. I rank her 9th place out of 10 outfits and a score of 2/10 overall.

Art Poll

I'm still planning to do replies, but I've got the hankering to draw something again, specifically the costumes of some of Aaron's other teammates, since I've only done Makoto and Futaba so far.

So, here's the poll. More details will be below

Let's break down what my plan is, and what each option means;

The Plan

Since it's been a little bit since I've done one of these, I'm planning to start by editing a piece of official art to sort of conceptualize the design so I have something to work off of. This'll be much harder for option 4, but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

Then once I've got that done, I'll try to an actual bit of art work for 'em, which will obviously take a lot longer, and probably won't be done until after I get back from my sister's wedding, but I wanna get the process started while I'm in the mood for it.

#1: Ryuji - Electro

This one I don't think needs much explanation. Just gonna be a mix of Skull and Electro, taking some elements from Static from DC and his Third Persona William (probably more so in the actual art as that'll be tough to edit in). Definitely gonna try to fit the classic Electro mask in, and maybe make some other tweaks like turning the spine on his back into a sorta... power meter/magnetic weapon holster for his melee weapon, which I wanna turn into a mix between a spiked bat and a tesla coil but we'll see.

#2: Ann - Black Cat/Firestar

This one has been on the backburner for a while, and something I've been dying to make. Basically, similar to Sumi (and a lot of the cast actually), Ann will have two costumes. The first being a more traditional Black Cat look from before she awoke to her Persona (albeit less revealing, since she chooses to wear this unlike her Phantom Thief attire), while the second, and the one I'd be designing here, mixes that with her Panther outfit as well as elements of the mutant hero Firestar. Picturing a black and vibrant pink look, with the fur accents that are a staple of Black Cat being made to look more like flames. It'll be a bit of a challenge, but it's one I'm excited to do!

#3: Sumi - First Outfit - Spider-Woman

The first thing you might be wondering is "Why does Sumi get two outfits?" The answer to that is, I've been seeing a lot of fan stuff where she gets a new, more original design after coming to terms with her identity, as a way to set herself apart (and also make Violet actually violet) which I really like.

Sumire's powers are closer to Silk, except she is entirely reliant on webbing, and can't even stick to walls without coating her hands in the stuff. Despite that, her first costume, much like her look in game is very clearly inspired by Aaron's. She wants to be more like him, and tries to emulate how he does things, even if her powers don't work the same, and her costume reflects that.

It's a more of a mix of Violet's outfit and Aaron's Phantom Spider look, but with elements of various Spider-Women designs (namely Jessica Drew and 1610's second Black Widow) to make it stand out a bit more

#4: Sumi - Second Outfit - Silk

This one is going to be the hardest to conceptualize, but I definitely want to try because I think this could look really cool.

The basic idea is to do Silk, but with more of a focus on white and vibrant purples, while incorporating elements of her first costume and leaning more into the gymnast side of her with maybe like her sash, adding in slippers like Ghost Spider, stuff like that. She's not Aaron, she's not her sister, she is herself, and this outfit will do its best to stand apart from them, hence the main color being white.

I honestly don't have a solid design in my head for this unlike the other three, but it's one I think would be fun to make regardless.

Sumire is fine, I don't really have an impression of her other than "wow they really forced her as best girl huh and the ending is lackluster if you actually date her." But KASUMI.

Nice park clean up and cute moments with the shujin trio? No, it's Kasumi time.

It's a shame because I want to like Kasumire I really do, but she spends too much of the game as Kasumi and leaves so small of an impression as Sumire.

Also tbh her writing in third sem sucks. Putting her hair up with the Kasumi ribbon allowing her to transform into violet? Dumb. Her outfit is Fem Jokers? Dumb, they should have got rid of that when she was no longer FeMC.

I like the leotard but outside of that it just... big sigh, she didn't her own color and just also red, Joker does it better and longer than her and it makes her time as a thief feel bland.

Her moveset too... bless and curse fighters aren't great but Sophia and Ken Amada prove it can be done but something about Sumi's moveset feels weak.

And (I have this problem with almost all the girls dw) romancing Sumire feels gross.

Joker doesn't know her well, he knew Kasumi, and Sumire's last five social link ranks just don't feel like they are enough to get to know her, she doesn't feel all that different from Kasumi either which ISNT a good thing as it makes me feel like she's relapsing by the end of the game which is BAD.

Also like, she's so entranced by Joker and has that whole "I owe him so much he's my wonderful senpai!!!!!1!1" thing that also makes romancing her feel yucky to me.

And her sailor moon transformation is dumb. You're telling me nerdy Futaba, practically serena herself Ann, and elegant princess Haru had normal fire transformations ans Kasumi gets a sailor moon transformation?

There's so much with her that feels mishandled, and again I have such a hard time trying to like Sumire because Kasumi angers me.

I would like to reiterate, if you like her, as either Kasumi or Sumire PLEASE do not let me take that away from you, it's completely valid and I would even like to discuss it with you as I want to like her.

Anyways she's still not the worst phantom thief.

GG to Yoshizawa and Akechi fans, y'all ate in third semester, but as neither of those things, I prefer the vanilla ending.

Sumire: The uniform from Shujin Academy? Kasumi's mentioned that before I think. Um, I t-think it's pretty nice, do you think I look ok?

Phantom Thief Outfits
