I adore Her Tale of Shim Cheong's refusal to show you its characters' secrets. We find out so much about them, they're so well-developed, and yet they're just well-realized enough for it to be obvious that we're missing pieces. We don't know Madam Jang's given name, or if she chose a new name for herself some day. The same goes for Ditchdeok, and the Step-daughter. We never see if Cheong and Madam kissed under the fireflies, and in a few other moments, too. What would, in other series, be a cop-out ending, where we just see them get together and skip over the relationship life itself, is part of a bigger point here. This story's being shared with us, but it isn't ours.

The women live for themselves.

I think that's how I'd describe the happy ending of this series.

Consider: 白銀ギムナジウム / Silver Gymnasium by Hiruno Tsukiko — A collection of stories within the same orphanage about… girls’ love. Sounds simple but it is much more profound than what the premise first offered.

Other poetic/soulful/“deep” yuri I read last year under the cut:

- 君と綴るうたかた / The Summer You Were There by Yuama — Incredibly beautiful and lowkey heartbreaking til the end. About a girl who finds it hard to socialize and a cheerful girl who wishes for her to be happy. With a twist later. It’s still serializing and I hope all goes well for the characters (it just finished, holy shit) 🥹 The vibes are mellow/soft/melancholic. Gymnopedie No. 1. This one is quite a heavy read.

- シメジシミュレーション / Shimeji Simulation by Tsukumizu — The same creator as Girls’ Last Tour. Surrealism, philosophy, and absurd silly questions about reality stuffed in a blender with romantic tension between two girl besties to top it off (it goes somewhere, I promise). This manga was one of the highlights of my first semester. It’s beautiful.

- きみが死ぬまで恋をしたい / My Wish Is To Fall In Love Until You Die by Aono Nachi — Deals with themes of war, magic, and grief. This one brought me to tears several times. It feels very melancholic. The pacing is gentle, which makes the painful parts of the story more painful.

- 君を紡ぐ / Stitch You Together by Kurihara Sakura — A bittersweet one. A girl who can sew, and her friend who got turned into a zombie. Do I need to elaborate?

- 그녀의 심청 / Her Shim-Cheong by Seri (세리), Biwan (비완) — This one is a manhwa but worth a read. It is based of a Korean folktale; the manhwa focuses on the story of a beggar girl and a young bride sold off to a chancellor and how the two of them try to escape their fate. This one is quite a heavy read.

- ライカの星 / Planet Laika by Mayuri Yoshida — DOG YURI… AND ITS INCREDIBLY MEANINGFUL TOO… AND BEAUTIFUL. One of my best reads??? It’s about Laika, the dog sent to space, getting a planet of her own and destroying the earth with her dog gf but things don’t go that smoothly and she met gods you know what just read it.

FEBRUARY UPDATE. THERE'S MORE:

- かけおちガール / Run Away With Me, Girl by Battan — I'm so glad that I lived in an era to experience this. It's about two girls who used to be highschool sweethearts, reunited as adults, except one of them is pregnant. As the title suggests, they plan on running away. This may be one of my favorites, especially since it gave me hope for my future and beautiful poetic panels full of longing to appreciate today. I kid you not, the art is GORGEOUS. It felt dreamlike, ecstatic, yet somehow so so forlorn. So real.

- リリィシステム / Lily System by Yoshitomi Akihito — A short but beautiful read. It tells the story of two girls encountering a virtual reality machine. They navigate both their feelings for each other, and the increasingly blurred lines between virtual reality and reality itself. The art is gorgeous. Especially the environments. Yuri in presence fr.

And many more that I NEED TO READ!!! (Feel free to recommend me more yuri!!! I have around 200-300 yuri in my reading list and 80+ completed and 40+ on hold rn so I may have already read it / put it in my reading list 😭)

A lot of these are INCREDIBLY romantic. Full of yearning, dreaming, and aching longing. The GL genre is full of these, even for the lighter stories. What you have to do is look. And YES Otherside Picnic is an incredible sci-fi yuri go read it (the light novel too).

WAHAHAHA if you guys have ever read Tale of Shim Chong (aka Her Shim Cheong), the official english has some extras from the author where one of his ideas was to have cheong end up in the dragon god’s palace, meet her deceased mother and learn heavenly martial arts, come back down and fight monsters instead of you know, meeting the minister’s wife and the two finally escaping and getting married

GL manhwa recs

This summer I’ve been reading a lot of gay comics. Some American, some Japanese, but mostly Korean! I will try to list as many content warnings as possible and try to avoid giving too much away. I hope you enjoy the manhwas as much as I did! :)

Also… please, please, please PAY the original artists as much as you can, whether you read the official or unofficial translations. If you find that it’s difficult to navigate a certain site (even with google translate turned on), you might be able to find fan-made how-to-pay guides for non-Korean speaking people. It’s really important that we give money to people in our community and support queer art, even if that means saving a little extra or paying at a later time.

Moonlight Garden //  월야화원 by Kang Unnie and MissPM

Content warnings: NSFW (a lot of sex and a lot of naked ladies), child abuse (a couple flashbacks about branding) and past child slavery, violence, blood, death 

NSFW: About 10% of the story has graphic sex scenes, but the sex scenes were all connected to the plot. It’s also kind of expected since it’s set in a brothel lmao 

Plot: There were a lot of moving parts (love triangle, politics, backstories), but you’ll get the hang of it. The extra focus needed was well worth it bc the ending was super satisfying 

World building: Learning about the flower maidens was so interesting!!! Probably my favorite part of the manhwa. I felt like all of my questions were answered while reading

No men: There were some gossiping male guards and fathers in flashbacks, but for the most part, the men are absent and nameless

Art: GORGEOUS!!! They had coloring assistants and it SHOWED. There was a sweetness to the art style

Rating: 10 out of 10 peach blossoms and blue roses

Blooming Sequence // 블루밍 시퀀스 by Lee Eul

Content warnings: mildly NSFW (nothing above PG-13), worrying about being outted, family pressure and obligations, verbal abuse from parents 

Dialogue: The thing that stood out to me the most was the fluid and natural dialogue. The pacing in general was great! 

Film club: The plot circles around the film club and it’s an important part of the story. I liked that it wasn’t a side thing and that it helped keep the plot moving forward

Sunbae/hoobae: Korean equivalent to senpai/kouhai. Seowoo sunbae was my favorite! Sometimes she’d be illustrated with a tiny tooth and it was v cute

More lesbians: There were a surprising amount of queer ladies? There are def men in the story and ofc not every single woman was gay, but there were a lot more than I expected. Nice that it wasn’t just the main couple! 

Rating: 9 out of 10 War Kong Wai films

It Would be Great if You Didn’t Exist AKA Wish You Were Gone //  네가 없었으면 좋겠어 by Carbonara 

Content warnings: mildly NSFW (nothing past PG-13), people stalk the main couple, child abuse (flashbacks), violence (there’s an incident), worrying about being outted

Angsty?: The beginning is the best part. I wouldn’t say it goes downhill after that but..... it just get kinda angsty? I was surprised how much of their past traumas became a big part of the story. There were still a lot of cute moments sprinkled in until the end tho! 

Art: The art is super cute! And I loved that one of the main’s bffs was shown to be GNC since childhood 

Rating: 8 out of 10 fat cats named pumpkin

Everyday Lily // 백합은 일상 by Gom Mali

Content warnings: Jua has a history of being a predatory lesbian

4-koma: Some serious things happen in the second half of the story, but for the most part, things are really light and silly

Older lesbians: Jua is still in college, but she does have older lesbian friends, which was nice to see! The oldest one was maybe 30? 

Rating: 7 out of 10 kisses in front of the Eiffel Tower

Her Tale of Shim Chong //  그녀의 심청 by Biwan, Seri 

Content warnings: gender violence, sexual harassment, threats of sexual assault, wife battery, stabbing, illness & death, extreme poverty 

Plot: Girl can’t catch a break!!! I was exhausted from all the bad things that happened. It felt like a constant barrage of misfortune. I stopped reading bc I just had a pit in my stomach the whole time I read 

Potential reasons to read: Even tho I wasn’t a huge fan of the story, I still give it a higher rating bc the art is SO beautiful. I also really liked the unnie/fortune teller, as a friend to Shim Chong and as an individual character

Ratings: 7 out of 10 cursed foxes

HONORABLE MENTION: Fluttering Feelings //  설레는 기분 by ssamba 

Content warnings: domestic violence near the beginning

STORY DISCONTINUED: After battling cancer for years, the author passed away in Feb 2018. There are no official plans for the story’s continuation

Personally significant: I still get choked up whenever I think about FF and the author. This story was so important to me in undergrad! I haven’t re-read it since the author’s death, so I’m sorry if I forgot any major content warnings :(

Slow burn: Two friends slowly realizing their feelings for each other. Very tender and realistic   

Rating: 10 out of 10 soft touches and longing looks

Her tale of Shim Chong/ 그녀의 심청/ 她的沈清 is such a great comic! The amazing adaption and rewrite of classic literature, the beautiful art design, the feminist metaphor and the beautiful love story of these two female protagonists...it surely is one of my favourite comics that I can’t help but repeat reading again and again. I love it soooo much that I draw this fanart.

푸른 바다의 전설

병원에 오래 머무르면서 채널 돌리는 재미의 룰 같은 걸 익히게 됐다. 요는 돌려가며 볼 만할까 싶은 채널을 외워 기억하는 거다. 별 거 없는 룰이다. 하지만 이 룰 없이 계속 돌리기만 하면 하루 종일 돌리다 볼 게 없어 TV를 끄게 되는 일에 이른다. 하릴 없어 시간 때우기가 업인 사람에겐 막장이나 다름 없는 결말이다.

그렇게 채널을 돌리다 <푸른 바다의 전설>을 봤다. 설정은 인어와 인간의 사랑이라는 말도 안되는 이야기인데 드라마는 말도 안되는 것들을 쌓아가며 말이 되는 이야기를 만든다. 상대가 없으면 나도 없고 내가 없으면 상대도 없는 인연, 그러니까 상대가 죽으면 나도 죽고 내가 죽으면 상대도 죽는 인연, 모 아니면 도인 인연의 제로섬. 이 말도 안되는 상황 속에서 드라마는 어디에도 없는 사랑, 아니 어디에도 없기 때문에 성립 가능한 사랑을 그려낸다. 순수한 사랑 판타지다.

엉뚱한 설정의 드라마지만 남과 여의 관계를 그려내는 건 진부한 드라마에서 멀리 떨어지지 않았다. 어쨌든 부자인 남자와 아무것도 없는 여자가 사랑에 빠진다는 이야기는 결국 신데렐라 로맨스이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 <푸른 바다의 전설>이 새로운 건 왕자의 직업이 재벌 사장님이 아니라 사기꾼이란 거다. 똑같이 돈 많은 부자지만 더 나쁜 부자 사기꾼을 등쳐먹는 설정이 재미난 쾌감을 준다. 더불어 요시마타 료의 음악 또한 좋은 선택이었던 것 같다.

드라마가 더 큰 재미를 붙이는 건 만화 같은 캐릭터들의 생생함이다. 우선 주연 배우인 허준재 역의 이민호. 참 재미없게 생겼다 생각했는데 이번 드라마에선 능글맞고 귀여운 사기꾼 캐릭터를 잘 차려 입었다. 함께 사기 치는 조남두 역의 이희준, 태오 역의 신원호 역시 한 팀을 꾸리기에 안성맞춤인 개성 가득한 옷을 잘 맞춰 입었다. 이희준 역시 이렇게 재미있는 남자였나 싶을 정도로 보는 사람을 웃��다

그리고 무엇보다 여자 주인공인 심청 역의 전지현. 상큼 발랄하고 코믹한 연기야 그녀의 장기겠지만 인어이기에 따라오는 비-인간적 설정들은 이제는 사라져버린, 그러니까 찾기 어려운 순수의 원형을 그려낸다. 그것이 잘 드러나는 건 심청이 인간 세계에 와 사귄 친구들의 면면이다. 초등학생 어린이, 거지, 그리고 아줌마. 나이, 직업, 연고가 없기에 어느 누구와도 사귈 수 있는 사람, 아니 인어의 삶은 허울 없어 편안하고 겁이 없어 흥미진진하다. 절대 사랑의 빛과 어둠을 동시에 보여준, 절대 순수의 로맨틱 코미디.
