What is the 23 nights temple? [Part 1]

Thank you for your continued support of the ‘A Message from 23 Nights Temple’ blog. We have received quite a few questions from our readers about the ‘23 Nights Temple’, so we would like to answer them here in two parts.

23 nights is one of the folk rituals on the night of a specific moon phase, such as the 13th, 15th, 17th or 19th night, to wait for the moon to rise, make offerings, eat and drink together. Hundreds of years ago, halls where these events used to be held were scattered all over Japan, but unfortunately most of them have now been demolished and replaced by parking lots and modern ossuaries, especially in urban areas. The moon-waiting rituals of the Mid-Autumn Moon, 15 Nights (Full Moon), are still practised today. Although most modern Japanese are agnostics, some ritual events incorporating Buddhism and Shintoism remain.

The moon phase on the 23rd night is the ‘waning moon’, the half moon after the full moon, when the left half of the moon appears to be shining. The moon on the 23rd night is characterized by appearing late, around midnight, and in some mountainous areas surrounded by mountains, it can appear as late as 1 a.m.

In moon-waiting, the object of worship was determined by the time of the lunar phase at which the event was held. The object of worship on the 23rd night was Mahāsthāmaprāpta (bodhisattva mahāsattva), who was also said to be the incarnation of the moon. The light of wisdom possessed by Mahāsthāmaprāpta was thought to illuminate everything, freeing people from suffering and giving them strength.

In Shinto, Tsukuyomi-no-mikoto (Ref) is another name for Mahāsthāmaprāpta. He is also known as the god of agriculture and fishery, due to his characteristic control over the moon calendar.

The widespread ritual of waiting for the moon on the night of the 23rd lunar phase can be attributed to the worship of Mahastamaprapta, the savior of all things.

In “ A Message from 23 Nights Temple,” one of those shrines is featured. However, 2 years ago, the shrine, built over 1,000 years ago, was removed and converted into a commercial ossuary (August 2022), and the monk who left many of his messages died at the same time, but we continue to present the Zen words he left behind.

日頃から『二十三夜堂からのメッセージ』ブログをご愛読いただきありがとうございます。読者のみなさんから『二十三夜堂』についてご質問が多々ありましたので、ここでお答えしようと思います。

二十三夜とは、十三夜、十五夜、十七夜、十九夜などの一つで、特定の月齢の夜に、人々が集まって月の出を待ち、供物を捧げ、飲食を共にする民俗儀式のこと。数百年前までは、こうした行事が行われるお堂が日本各地に点在していたが、残念ながら現在ではそのほとんどが取り壊され、特に都市部では駐車場や近代的な納骨堂に取って代わられている。中秋の名月、十五夜（満月）の月待ちの儀式は、今日でも行われている。現代の日本人の多くは無宗教だが、仏教や神道を取り入れた儀式行事も残っている。

二十三夜の月齢は、左側半分が輝いて見える「下弦の月」、満月の後の半月のこと。二十三夜の月は深夜0時ごろに現れるのが特徴で、山に囲まれた地域では深夜1時ごろに現れることもある。

月待ちでは、行事を行う月年齢の時期によって崇拝の対象が決まっていた。二十三夜で礼拝したのは、月の化身ともいわれた「勢至菩薩 (せいしぼさつ、梵: ﾏﾊｰｽﾀｰﾏﾌﾟﾗｰﾌﾟﾀ) 」である。勢至菩薩が持つ智慧の光は全てを照らし、人々を苦しみから解放して力を与えると考えられていた。その名は文字通り「大いなる力の到来」を意味する。

神道における「月読命（つくよみのみこと: 参照）」は、勢至菩薩の別名。暦を支配するという特徴から、農耕や漁業の神としても知られている。

二十三夜の月待ちが人々の間に広まった理由は、万物を救済する勢至菩薩を崇拝の対象にしていたからだといわれている。

『二十三夜堂からのメッセージ』では、それらの一つを取り上げています。しかし、2年前、1000年以上前に建てられた祠は取り払われ、商業的納骨堂へと改装され(2022年8月)、またメッセージの数々を残した僧侶も同時期に亡くなっていますが、彼の残した禅語を継続してご紹介しています。

そして個人的には、宗教というよりは、自然を崇拝し、花鳥風月を愛で、宇宙を感じて生きていた先史時代の人々の哲学を、一人でも多くの人に思い出してもらいたいという思いで投稿して���ます。

Masashi Kishimoto: Thank you very much. Actually, I just finished drawing the final chapter about an hour ago. Then I took a short nap and now that I'm here for this interview I'm starting to realize that it's finally over.

まさに興奮冷めやらぬですね。 先生にとっ どんな1年間でしたか?

-The excitment is still palpable. How was the past year for you, sensei?

岸本: こういう質問には���れまで「長いようで短かった」って答えていたんですが、今の率直 な気持ちは「本当に長かった」です(笑)。 この感 覚は連載が終わったからでしょうね。 毎週締め 切りに追われている状態の時は一週間があっと いう間なんですけど、今振り返ってみるとやっ ばり15年というのは長かったですね。

岸本: 最後はナルトとサスケが戦って終わりにしようというのは、連載当初から初代編集担当 さんと話し合って決めていました。 担当が変わ るときにも「あのラストだけは変えちゃダメだ よ」と言われたのですが、同時に「君の作品だか ら、どう変わっても自由だよ」とも言われて、い ったいどっちなのかなと(笑)。ただ僕の中でも このラストは変えたくなかったので、結局そこ はブレずに貫きましたが、それ��れがどういう 状態で最終決戦を迎えるのかはずっと手探り状 態で、現在のような流れがはっきりと固まった のは3年ほど前でした。 ラストバトルで僕がこ だわったのは、ナルトとサスケがただの敵では なく、互いを友達だと意識しながら戦うという ことです。と言うのも、最後にサスケを救う可能 性があるんだったらそこしかないと思ったんで す。 サスケは色々あって拗ねまくってしまった 面倒くさいヤツなんですよ。自分で描いていて もイライラするくらい(笑)。そんなサスケを受 け止められるのは、めちゃくちゃ器が大きいナ ルトくらいしかいないんです。あれだけサスケ のことが大好きなサクラでも、サスケを刺そう とした際に一度は諦めの気持ちが芽生えていま すけど、ナルトにはまったく諦めがないですか ら。親友を失って終わるのはやっぱり辛いです から、僕自身そんなナルトの可能性に賭けて、 何とかサスケを救って欲しいと思いました。

岸本: 実際に僕自身が本当に双子なので、小さ い頃からナルトが感じていたような感覚を持っ て育ってきたんです。 この話は格好悪いのであ んまり話したくはないんですけど、小学生の頃 は2人とも体が小さくて、休み時間になるとよ 弟がキン肉マンに登場するパロスペシャルと いう技をかけられていたんです。別にいじめら れていたわけではないのですが、体が小さいと 何かと技をかけられる時期じゃないですか。 そ んな弟を見ていると、まるで自分が技をかけら れているように痛かったんです。 まあ実際に僕 は僕で、弟の隣でキン肉ドライバーをかけられ ていたっていうのもあるんですが(笑)。 でも変 な話ですが、 そういう時に「俺たちって兄弟な 「んだな」ということを強く感じたんですよ。 弟 との繋がりを意識した瞬間というか。それが高 校生や大学生になると、友達が失恋したり何か 上手くいかないことがあると、小学生時代に弟 に対して抱いた感覚と同じ感覚になるようにも なったんです。そこで「俺はコイツと本当に仲 がいいんだな」って改めて思ったりしました。 だから僕にとっては兄弟愛と友情は同じなんで す。そういう意味では、双子に生まれてきてよ かったと思います。 ナルトとサスケの友情の原型は、まさに僕と弟だったわけですから。

Kishimoto: I actually am a twin myself, so I grew up with the same feelings that Naruto experienced. This story is kind of embarrasing so I don't really want to talk about it but when we were in elementary school, we were both small, and during recess, my younger brother would often get hit with a technique called the Paro Special, which appears in Kinnikuman. It's not like we were being bullied or anything, but when you're small, you tend to get picked on with moves like that, right? It was painful to watch my younger brother as if I was being attacked myself. And I actually was, right next to him, getting hit with a Kinniku Driver (laughs). But, oddly enough, it was at those moments that I really felt we were brothers. It was the moment when I became aware of the connection with my younger brother.

When I became a high school and university student, I started to feel the same way towards my friends when they experienced heartbreak or something didn't go well, just like I did towards my younger brother when I was in elementary school. In those moments, I would think, "Wow, I really get along well with this guy". So, for me, brotherly love and friendship are the same. In that sense, I'm glad I was born as a twin.

岸本 あれだけのことをやってしまったので、 さすがに里で普通に暮らすのは難しいですよ ね。だからひとつは贖罪の旅という意味です。 さらに僕の中にある裏設定としては、世界に残 っている謎を解明するという目的です。原作の ラスボスだった大筒木カグヤがいったい何者 で、どこから来たのかを解明しないと再び世界 が厄災に見舞われてしまうので、それを阻止す るための旅でもあるんです。ただそれを長々と 説明してしまうと、「これ、まだまだ続くの?」 って思われてしまうので、そこはさらっと流し ました。そこは続く予定はありませんから。

岸本: かなり前からヒナタで決めていました。 サクラにしようかと迷った時期もあ���たのです が、ここへ来てサクラがナルトに心変わりした ら、さすがにサクラはひどい女過ぎでしょう (笑)。それに、実際サクラはなんだかんだでサ スケに対して一途なんだと思います。

Kishimoto: I decided on Hinata a long time ago. There was a time when I was torn between Sakura and Hinata, but if Sakura were to change her mind about Naruto now, it would make her seem like a really terrible woman (laughs). Besides, I think Sakura is actually quite devoted to Sasuke, no matter what.

夏までナルトを描きます ―“友情”を描き切った漫画本編に対し、12月 に公開される映画「THE LAST』では、一 転して“恋愛”がテーマとなっていますね。

I'll be drawing Naruto until summer.

-While the main manga is all about friendship, the movie "The Last," which will be released in December, has a completely different theme: love.

岸本: 恋愛をテーマにしたいというアイデアは アニメ制作サイドから出たものでした。 僕とし てはいいアイデアが浮かばなければ映画は作ら ないほうがいいんじゃないかと思っていたので すが、この話を聞いた瞬間に「これはイケるか も」と感じました。 漫画ではバトルばかりでほ とんど恋愛描写はできなかったので、その補完 的な意味合いも込めて、映画で恋愛面でのナルトの成長を描写できると思い、一気にイメージが膨らみました。

Kishimoto: The idea to make romance the theme came from the anime production side. I thought that if I couldn't come up with a good idea, I shouldn't make a film, but the moment I heard about this, I thought "This could work." The manga is all about battles and not much about romance, so I thought the movie would be a great complement to the manga, and I could portray Naruto's growth in terms of romance, which is what I had in mind when I started the movie.

岸本先生としては、映画にどのように携わ られたのでしょうか。

-Kishimoto-sensei, how were you involved in the film?

岸本 最初に話をいただいたときにはシナリオ の第一稿が出来ていたんですよ。僕はそれを元 に修正依頼をしてブラッシュアップしていった 感じです。脚本家さんを始め、スタッフのかた が、ナルトの恋愛”というテーマにすごく前向き で、僕もその熱意に共感していつの間にか細か 何度も修正をお願いしてしまいました。

Kishimoto: When I was first approached about the project, the first draft of the script had already been completed. I used that as the basis when requesting revisions and gradually polishing it up. The screenwriter and the staff were very positive about the theme of "Naruto's love life" and I shared their enthusiasm and before I knew it I asked them to revise the script several times.

原作でも本格的な恋愛描写はほとんど登場 しませんし、 特にナルトの恋愛というのは想像 し難いですよね。

-There are hardly any serious depictions of romance in the original work, and it's especially hard to imagine a romantic relationship for Naruto.

岸本: 僕自身、恋愛描写は恥ずかしくなっちゃ って描けないんです。だから原作でも本気の描 写は避けてきましたし、最終話では「ドラゴン ボール」ばりに一気に時間を飛ばす形を取りま した。 恋愛話はアニメだからこそ実現出来たこ とだと思いますし、結果的に漫画のラストに繋 がる良いエピソードになったと思います。

Kishimoto: Personally, I find depictions of love embarrassing and I can't draw them. That's why I avoided serious depictions in the original work, and in the final chapter I took the approach of jumping through time in a "Dragon Ball" style. I think the love story was only possible in the anime, and it turned out to be a good episode that leads up to the end of the manga.

そして最後にどうしても気になるのは、岸本先生の今後の予定についてです。

-And lastly, what I'm really curious about is Kishimoto-sensei's future plans.

岸本: 来年春に「NARUTO-ナルト-」新編を 短期集中連載します。それ以外にも、夏くらいま では『NARUTO-ナルト-」関連の仕事がまだ 残っていますから、本格的に次作の準備に取りか かるのはそれからですね。 実はネタ帳には色々 なアイデアが溜まっているので、期待してくだ さい。 でも僕も40歳になったので、週刊連載は 辛いですね。よく秋本(治) 先生を見習えって言 われますけど、 秋本先生は本当にすごいんです。 できれば週刊は勘弁してください(笑)。まずは、 もろもろ落ち着いたら新婚旅行と子供と遊ぶ時 間を作りたいですね。結婚して10年以上経ちま すが、 『NARUTO-ナルト-」のおかげでとに かくノンストップでした。 そろそろナルトたち と一緒に自分の家族も大切にしなきゃね(笑)。

Kishimoto: I'll be serializing a new chapter of "NARUTO" in a short intensive series next spring. Other than that, I still have work related to "NARUTO" until around summer, so I won't be able to start preparing for the next installment until then. Actually, I have a lot of ideas in my notebook, so please look forward to them. But now that I'm 40 years old, weekly serialization is tough. People often tell me to follow Akimoto (Osamu) sensei's example, but Akimoto sensei is really amazing. If possible, please spare me from weekly serialization (laughs). First of all, once everything has settled down, I want to have time for a honeymoon and to play with my children. I've been married for over 10 years, but thanks to "NARUTO", it's been nonstop. It's about time I cherish my family along with Naruto (laughs).

最近読み始めた本がある。アンソロジー本で『私の身体を生きる』各著者の性や身体に関することがエッセイとして書かれている。私の知らない部分を見入っては圧巻というか関心というか。20代後半になって性に関することで悩んだり通院することになったり三大欲求であると共に切るに切り離せないものだと思っているので、これを機に振り返ってみようと思う。

私の初体験は知らない男だった。知らないというのは素性をそこまで知らずインターネットで知り合った男だった。私は16、向こうは32。家の縛りや慣習に辟易として早く捨ててしまいたいと思っていた。初めて行ったラブホテルは部屋になぜか自転車が置いてあったので今でも印象に残っている。わからないなりに咥えたり喘いでみたりしたけど挿入時は痛みがあった。出血はしなかったことに安心した。その後、大学進学のための上京で欲が爆発した。行為が好きだった、裏にはいつと贖罪があった。好きにさせてしまった、と思えば身体を差し出して許しを乞うてみたり、可哀想だから、と頭ひとつ出て相手を見下している部分もあった。���んな私を知った母親から「私は純潔で父に捧げた」と言われた時は取り戻せない後悔より、だから?と見下していた。

コロナ禍に学生に戻った時なんてTinder無双をした。チンソムなんてしょうもない事もしていた。

欲だから浮き沈みもあって、修論書いていた時は1年間性行為と無縁だった。っていいように書いてみたものの、無双の中で出会った男に無理矢理犯されて痛みと共に下物の色がおかしくなってその時初めて婦人科に行った。M字開脚に放心になりながらも、異形成と知りコルポスコピーも受けた。癌になるかならないかのグレーゾーン判定を受けた時は人生呆気ないかも、と思った。結局なんやかんやで生き延びているし、最近の定期検診も大丈夫だったので適度に生き抜いていきたい。

再社会人になってからも少し遊んでいたが、ピルを飲み始めたら体調が悪くなった。常に気持ちが悪く、欲もどうでもよくなった。丁度その頃付き合い始めた恋人と燃えあがるような想いと行為だったのに、ピルと具合の悪さが続いて花火のように消化してしまった。ちょっとした興味本位もあったのに、なんだかなぁ。

夜になると欲を消化しないと眠れない日々が続いた。冒頭のようにしていたら、上手く達せられなくて、脚ピンの良くない体位でどうにか、を繰り返した。パブロフの犬。

夫婦間のレスの投稿をXかnoteかはてなで読んだ。行為が嬉しさだと気付いたような文を読んだ時は、幸せの先の嬉しさか、嬉しさゆえの幸せか鶏卵になった。

飲み会や日常で聞く下ネタに嫌悪を抱いている。どうでもええわ。が核心。勝手に私の知らないところで勝手にどうにかしてください。奥ゆかしさこそみたいなものもある気がする。(知らんがな)

29にして常日頃将来を見つめ直し思い悩んでいる。性もそう。このままじゃと思って伝えたけど、家族になり過ぎる前に妊娠出産を得ないと安寧に縋ってしまうかもしれないと自分自身で思う。この脅迫概念に近しいものは、時期やイベントが過ぎれば呆気なかったなと思うかもしれない。わからないが故に時間と共に杞憂して焦っている。女故の性に囚われてしまっている。

消費期限と揶揄されることがあり、焦るにせよみないにせよ人生80年、100年ある中でなんたる微々たるものよ。

私の性は自分のものでいたいけど、世間的にといい家族といいレールに敷かれる上でぞんざいに扱われている気がする。

10年以上前にスーパーで買った食用多肉の「グラパラリーフ」🍀 葉っぱが5〜6枚ほどだったかな？ 数枚試食したのち、残りを土に置いておいたらやがて子株が育ち、去年からは可愛いお花も咲くようになりました。 グラパラリーフとは、同一種の多肉植物「朧月（おぼろづき）」を数年かけ、野菜として品種改良したもので、学名のグラプトペタルム・パラグアイエンセは共通らしく、これを略して “グラパラ” リーフなのだそう。 結構豊富な栄養素が含まれているようで、特にカルシウムやマグネシウムが多く、二日酔いや疲労防止にも効くらしいのですが…、食べるのはそれほど食指が動かず、もっぱら観賞用として育てております😆

映画で流れる一曲。アレンジさせて頂きました。

サヘル監督からは「和」を取り入れたアレンジにしたいとのこと。お琴2台、エレキギター、キーボード、そして歌とヴァイオリンというユニークな編成で聖歌を表現。トークショーでサヘル監督がクリスマスへの思いについて語られました。施設でもクリスマスをお祝い。でも、親がサンタになるクリスマスは体験できない。他者との差を感じられる、クリスマス。

私はオーストラリアで育ったので、サーフィンするサンタさんと真夏のクリスマスのイメージがあるかもしれません。実際は、私にとって最も孤独な時期でした。お店は空いてない、ツリーも飾れない、プレゼントもない、友達と会えない。クリスチャン、カソリックにとって大事なクリスマスとかけ離れたところにいました。憧れなのか、昔から教会音楽が大好きで、サヘル監督と同様、クリスマスソングが好き。

そんな、クリスマスへの憧れと孤独さをアレンジで表現してみました。子供達が奏でられる、温もり溢れる音。どこかで切ない、冷たい音色。映画ではお芝居だけではなく、楽器も演奏されたキャスト。すごい！としか言えない。Bravi!

6日は、いつもライブに来られるサポーターさんの姿も見られました。そんな皆さんにとっても、初めて聞く歌と演奏をお届け。「花束」に因んだ、お花をテーマにした選曲。喜納昌吉さんの名曲「花」と洋楽「The Rose」を一つにしたカリンバと歌のアレンジ。

「すべての人の心に花を」。平和の祭典にインスパイアされた、人生を語る一曲。そして、サヘル・ローズ監督に因んだ薔薇の歌。愛とは、色々な形と感じ方がある。でも、私にとっては愛は薔薇であり、あなたはその唯一の種である。心の冬はやってくる。でも、凍った土の下には、種が眠っている。いずれ、春は来る。

カリンバはアフリカにルーツがある楽器です。サヘル監督が演奏後、感想をシェアして下さいました。子守唄のような、子供の頃を思い出す懐かしい音色。カリンバのキラキラした音が、赤ん坊がゆりかごから見上げる、ピカピカな飾りのように見えて、そんな赤ちゃんでありたかった、憧れだという。思わずウルッとしてしまいました…

一人では何もできない、と仰るサヘル監督。大分一人で色々やられていますが！そんな彼女でも、人の支えについて語られる。「人」という漢字も、支え合ってますよね。最後は、そんな誰かの支えによって自分を超えることができる、感謝の歌を、マイクなしのヴァイオリンと歌で、素の音でお届けしたいと思いました。

暖かい眼差しと、色々な感情の子供達の花束に囲まれて、素直に表現ができました。

泣いたり、笑ったりした、そんな一夜でした。

赤花[Akabana] : Red flower

満作[Mansaku] : Witch-hazel, the genus Hamamelis

It is one variety of 丸葉満作(var. discolor f. obtusata) with red flowers. 丸葉[Maruba] means round leaves. During the flowering period, the name 赤花- is easy to recognize because there are no leaves, while the name 丸葉- is easy to recognize after the flowers have fallen and the leaves have emerged.

The long, narrow, thin petals look like short, red ribbons.

祖母の葬式の時であつた。放鳥をすると云ふので靑い竹で編んだ籠に、赤い紐を付けたのを二ツ拵へて、双方へ一羽ヅヽの山雀を入れた。さうして僕はそれを持つて行列した。其日は非常な吹雪󠄃で籠を持つて居る僕の手は殆んど凍つく樣である。籠の中の山雀は時々悲しげに囀つて居る。やがて葬式の塲所󠄃へ来たので棺の前へ籠を置いた。暫くして僧侶の引導が濟んだから僕は大勢を押し分けて出て、何氣なしに二ツの籠の戶を一度に開けたら二羽の山雀は鳴き／＼彼方の杉木立の方へ飛んで行かうとする途󠄃中、何處からか一羽の鴉があらはれて山雀の一羽を啣んで去つた。風は益々吹き荒れ雪󠄃を燒捲つてヒヨーヒヨーと鳴つて居る。人足共は柩をかついで火葬塲へ行つた。死人(を燒)くうち一羽の山雀が焚火の邊に來て悲しげに鳴いて居てあつたと、葬式が濟んでから人足共は僕に話した。（丶人 ）

[Sobo no sōshiki no toki deatta. Hōchō wo suru to iu node aoi take de anda kago ni, akai himo wo tsuketa no wo futatsu koshiraete, sōhō e ichiwa zutsu no yamagara wo ireta. Sōshite boku wa sore wo motte gyōretsu shita. Sono hi wa hijō na fubuki de kago wo motte iru boku no te wa hotondo itetsuku yō dearu. Kago no naka no yamagara wa tokidoki kanashige ni saezutte iru. Yagate sōshiki no basho e kita node hitsugi no mae e kago wo oita. Shirabaku shite sōryo no indō ga sunda kara boku wa oozei wo oshiwakete dete, nanigenashi ni futatsu no kago no to wo ichido ni aketara niwa noyamagara wa naki naki kanata no sugikodachi no hō e tonde ikou to suru tochū, doko kara ka ichiwa no karasu ga arawarete yamagara no ichiwa wo fukunde satta. Kaze wa masumasu fukiare yuki wo yakimakutte "hyō hyō" to natte iru. Ninsoku-domo wa hitsugi wo katsuide kasōba e itta. Shinin wo yaku uchi ichiwa no yamagara ga takibi no hotori ni kite kanashige ni naite ite atta to, sōshiki ga sunde kara ninsoku-domo wa boku ni hanashita. (Chujin)]

This was at my grandmother's funeral. They were going to release the birds, so we made two cages woven with bamboo strips with red strings attached, and put a yamagara(Varied tit, Sittiparus varius) in each of them. I took them and joined the procession. It was a terrible snowstorm that day, and my hands are(were) almost frozen holding the cages. The yamagaras in the cages sometimes is(was) chirping sadly. Eventually we arrived at the funeral site, I placed the cages in front of the coffin. After a while, the monk had finished preaching a sermon and I pushed my way through the crowd, and unintentionally opened the doors of the two cages at once, and then, the two yamagaras were flying off toward a distant cedar grove, singing. But at that time, a crow appeared from somewhere and took one of the yamagaras in its mouth and left. The wind blew harder and harder, burning the snow and is(was) making whistling noise "Hyō hyō". The carriers went to the crematorium to carry the coffin. While they were burning the dead, a yamagara came near the fire and chirped sadly, the carriers told me after the funeral.
