桃源郷へ行こう [ Let's Head to Paradise ]
I'm not used to making such thin lineart in my drawings. Of all the pieces I've done, this is the one where I managed to create the thinnest lines. I actually feel like I enjoyed the lineart more than the finished piece because, in the final version, the delicate lines tend to fade away.
I made this drawing a while ago but didn't post it, so I decided to share it now. I'm also including the doodle and the lineart, as it might be interesting to see the process.

momo’s declaration here at the end of the arc adds an extra layer of meaning to his name. he says that he will make wano kuni into a 桃源郷/tougenkyou, a japanese term for ‘earthly paradise’ or 'utopian place.' the term originates from the peach blossom spring, a 5th century chinese fable about the discovery of a utopian land isolated from the rest of the world.
literally, it translates as something like ‘a place where peaches grow.’ (tou and momo both being readings of the kanji for 'peach', 桃.)

Memo for Episode 5 (Ep.29) “Moon Fairy”
猫猫「行ってきます」
Maomao “Itte-kimasu.”
Maomao “I’m off.”
紅娘「行ってらっしゃい」
Hon’nyan “Itte-rasshai.”
Hongniang “Good luck.”
「行ってきます」「行ってらっしゃい」 are always said among family or colleagues in the office when someone goes out. When someone comes back, we always say 「ただいま(Tadaima)」「おかえり(Okaeri)」.
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
子翠「だ~れだ?」
Shisui “Daaareda?”
Shisui “Guess who?”
In Japan, kids often play a game where they sneak up on a friend from behind, blindfold them with their hands, and ask “Guess who?” Do you play that kind of game in your country? Just like Xiaolan, Shisui is very cheerful and cute!
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
猫猫「つまみ食い?」
Maomao “Tsumami-gui?”
Maomao “Stealing food?”
つまみ食い(つまみぐい/Tsumami-gui) = つまみ(Tsumami): picking up + 食い(ぐい/Gui): eating
Sometimes that means stealing food, but usually it means only eating a small amount, like a bite. It can also be used when you are cooking, you taste something and it is delicious, so you can’t help but “eat a small bite: つまみ食い.”
子翠「違うけど。…これこれ!」
Shisui “Chigau-kedo. …Kore-kore!”
Shisui “No, actually. It’s this!”
I really like the way Shisui said 「違うけど(Chigau-kedo)」: “No, actually,” and the timing. It was fun!
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
子翠「猫猫も夜、見においでよ!月明かりにフワフワ輝いて、桃源郷(とうげんきょう)にでも迷い込んだ気分になるんだから!」
Shisui “Maomaomo yoru, mini oideyo! Tsuki-akari-ni fuwa-fuwa kagayaite, togenkyo-ni-demo mayoi-konda kibun’ni narun-dakara!”
Shisui “You should come see them at night, Maomao! They flit around and sparkle in the moonlight… It makes you feel like you’ve wandered into paradise!”
桃源郷(とうげんきょう/Togen-kyo): Utopia, paradise on earth, Shangri-la. (This is the word from China.)
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
姶良(アイラ)「ごきげんよう。せっかくの宴ですのに、こんなに離(はな)れてしまうなんて。もう少し近くで、お話をしたいでス。今日、皇弟(おうてい)様はご欠席トカ。ぜひお会いしたかったでス」
Aira “Gokigen-yo. Sekkakuno utage desu-noni, konna’ni hanarete-shimau-nante. Mo sukoshi chikakude, ohanashi’o shitai-desu. Kyo, otei-samawa go-kesseki-toka. Zehi oai-shitakatta-desu.”
Ayla “Greetings. I do not want to be so far apart at such a wonderful party. I would like to be closer to speak to you. I hear your brother is not attending today. I would have loved to meet him.”
In the Japanese subtitles, some of Ayla’s lines are written in Katakana endings, a common expression used in Japan to mean that the lines are spoken by foreigners whose pronunciation is unnatural but can be understood.
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
愛凛(アイリーン)「姶良(アイラ)、そろそろ戻りなさい。せっかくの舞台よ。ちゃんと楽しむべきでしょう」
Airin “Aira, soro-soro modori-nasai. Sekkakuno butai-yo. Chanto tanoshimu beki-desho.
Aylin “Ayla. That’s enough. They put on a great show for us. We must enjoy it properly.”
On the other hand, the ending of this line is not mixed with Kanakana. This means that we can infer that this line is spoken in their native language. In Japanese manga, lines are usually written vertically, but there is a technique of writing lines spoken by foreigners in a foreign language horizontally. By writing only some lines horizontally, the reader knows that they are spoken in a foreign language and also can understand the content of the lines. If you are reading a translated manga, you probably won’t notice it since everything is written horizontally, but if you are reading original Japanese manga, you may notice it, although the technique is not always used.
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
姶良「(トルコ語)」
Aira “(Toruko-go)”
Ayla “What’s going on?! Where did she go?! In fact, who was that?!”
The English subtitles had Ayla’s lines written out, but the Japanese subtitles only said “トルコ語” which means “Turkish.” But it helped me realize that the envoys were from Turky.
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
猫猫(具合の悪い侍女は、こうやって隔離(かくり)しておくのか…)「うおっ」
Maomao (Guaino warui jijowa, ko-yatte kakuri shite-oku-noka…) “Uo.”
Maomao (So, this is how they quarantine the ladies-in-waiting who aren’t feeling well.)
隔離する(かくりする/Kakuri-suru): quarantine, isolate
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
壬氏「目をつぶっている、ということだ」
Jinshi “Me’o tsubutte-iru, to-iu-koto da.”
Jinshi “We’re looking the other way for you.”
目をつぶる・つむる(めをつぶる・つむる/Me’o tsuburu, tsumuru): turn a blind eye to, look the other way, overlook, blink = 見て見ぬふりをする(みてみぬふりをする/Mite minu-furi’o suru): look and pretend not to look
目をつぶる・つむる also means simply closing one’s eyes.
―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
The highlight of this episode is the beauty of Jinshi as “moon fairy,” but I also thought Maomao was very cute in the dress. The scene Concubine Gyokuyou called Hongniang’s name and calmed her down for being irritated by Ayla’s rude behavior showed Concubine Gyokuyou’s greatness and composure.
