The heaviest snowfall this winter in Karuizawa. Grading for my first part-time lecture in a university was completed while watching a Siberian long-tailed rosefinch, Carpodacus sibiricus came to my garden. I proceeded with my lecture on "Evolution" in the style of responding to comment sheets, and the excellent responses I received each time made it a very stimulating time for me personally. I look forward to next year.

Japanese delivers on both, and I especially love moments like these:

Mikage basically says: "I said that I will 'respond', but I didn't say that I will 'answer' ". I found it really interesting and funny because not only 「応える」 and 「答える」 sound the same, they also have similar meanings: "to respond, to answer" and "to answer, to reply".

The catch is that the longer explanation of the first 「応える」 meaning goes like "to show a response, a reaction to something". Which means Mikage says he will react to the questions but not necessarily answer them.

This truly is golden, and makes learning so much more interesting for me ,D

大学で読んでいるAtwoodのHandmaid’s Tale。今年一、いやここ数年で最も心に響く小説かもしれない。女性たちがあらゆる権利を剥奪され、一部の女性は生殖の役割のみを与えられており、生かす権力と殺す権力が入り混じった世界、というディストピア的内容もさることながら、語りの形式、読者ーあなたーへの呼びかけ方が応答の可能性(responsibility)に挑戦しているところが秀逸。イスラム過激派によるとされる議会の襲撃からーおそらくそれはフェイクニュースーあらゆる「危機」の中で知らぬ間にあらゆる法整備が行われていく(ナオミ・クラインの『ショックドクトリン』を思い出す)。。どこかの島国みたい。あと、ディストピア以前にあったとされるユートピア的世界へのピュアな渇望というものを拒絶しているのが、さらに物語を面白くさせてるような気がする。「昔は良かった」と言ってしまう瞬間、昔にあった問題は問題化されない。。。。

授業が終わり、渋谷quattroへSay Sue Meのライブへ。なんだか、元気がもらえたパフォーマンスだった。Sumiは歌の合間にずっとビール飲んでてテンション高かったし、アンコールの曲は一番好きなLet’s Don’t Say Anything。涙出そうになった。

COVID-19の原因物質であるSARS-CoV-2によって、ヒトの体内における抗ウイルスシグナル伝達、免疫応答、細胞代謝が調節されなくなる。ここで我々は、SARS-CoV-2のアクセサリータンパク質ORF3a、ORF9b、ORF9c、ORF10が、A549肺上皮細胞において著しいミトコンドリアおよび代謝のリプログラミングを誘導することを示す。4つのORFすべてがミトコンドリアの断片化とミトコンドリア機能の変化を引き起こしたが、ORF3aとORF9cだけがミトコンドリアのクリステーの著しい構造変化を誘導した。ORF9b、ORF9cおよびORF10は、ほとんど重複したトランスクリプトームを誘導した。対照的に、ORF3aは、ミトコンドリアの重要な機能と形態を持つタンパク質の遺伝子のダウンレギュレーションを含む、別個のトランスクリプトームを誘導した。ゲノムスケールメタボリックモデルでは、ORF3aによって誘導されたアミノ酸代謝の低下や特定の脂質の代謝の亢進など、一般的かつ私的な代謝フラックスのリプログラミングが予測された。これらの知見は、SARS-CoV-2アクセサリー蛋白質によって引き起こされる代謝依存性と脆弱性を明らかにするものであり、介入のための新たな標的を同定するために利用できる可能性がある。
