If there's one thing I love more than seal script that's hard to read, it's gotta be seal script that's easy to read. Maybe! Actually, I'm not sure which I like more. Both are so good. Let's do both.
These are from two different restaurants, but the vocab is best learned as a set! First, the suffix -中 [ちゅう], which in this context means underway, in progress, or ___ happening now.
業中 [えいぎょうちゅう] means open for business.
営業 [えいぎょう] means business or operations.
営 means to perform, build, or conduct (business). For readings, the kun-yomi verb 営む [いとな.む] means to operate a business, and the on-yomi is エイ.
業 means business, vocation, performance, or arts. It's often used as a suffix to mean "the __ industry." It's read わざ, ギョウ, or ゴウ.
準備中 [じゅんびちゅう] means preparing for business/closed.
(The literal meaning is that they're preparing, but you'll also see these signs on businesses that are closed for the day.)
準備 [じゅんび] means prepare, get ready, or arrange.
準 means conform, corresponding, to be proportionate to, or to imitate. It's also a prefix meaning semi-___ (read ジュン). It's read じゅん.じる, じゅん.ずる, なぞら.える, のり, ひと.しい, みずもり, or ジュン.
備 means equip, provision, or preparation. It's read そな.える, そな.わる, つぶさ.に, or ビ.
The left radical 亻 looks like katakana イ, but it's actually derived from 人 person. And, as of yesterday, I can recognize the seal script form of this radical! I hadn't realized I was actually retaining any seal script info :D
Anyway, the radical 亻 is named 人偏 [にんべん], with 偏 meaning left radical. It’s similar to 彳, called 行人偏 [ぎょうにんべん] or the going-person radical. The extra stroke conveys a sense of movement.
Since it's “SPYLD” today, a post relating to language is most fitting! 😺
Have a post of part of an interview with (the late 😿) Mr Gregory Charles Rivers in which he talked a little bit about his relationship with the English language, after having learned Cantonese and staying in Hong Kong long-term for decades.
Date of interview is unknown but if I were to hazard a guess I'd say it's circa 2010s? Mr Rivers looks to be in his 40s to 50s here.
YIPPEE I'M FREE FROM HAIR HELL!! Luckily the clothes will be super easy to render quickly but dang I'm like 91 layers deep and still have to do the background and lighting lol
