August 11th, 1925

On the morning of August 11th, a sunny Tuesday, Byron and Eleora married in a Reform Jewish ceremony in a London synagogue attended by the Walsh and Balass families along with close friends. 

The afternoon and dinner hosted a large reception for the newlyweds at Walshstone Park, the wedding party traveling by train to meet the incoming guests. Eleora’s dress and veil were designed, handstitched, and embroidered by Giselle, and she wore diamond jewels that belonged to former duchesses of the past while Byron wore the tuxedo his grandfather Edwin wore when he married his grandmother Rose.

As the best man, Montgomery gave a speech describing how he met Eleora and Byron, the artist flapper and his fiancée’s academic prodigy brother, and how Byron forced him to introduce him to Eleora at a Halloween party, dressed as Louis XIV and Dionysus respectively. He quoted Marx toward the end, mostly just to rifle the majority upper-class guests, which Byron found extremely amusing. As the maid of honor, Samira spent her speech telling an embarrassing childhood story of her and Eleora which had the whole party roaring with laughter. 

And for all her naysay of the wedding, Rebecca was suddenly happily chatting to her son’s new in-laws. Perhaps the thought of all the money the Balasses had was very appealing. Byron loved his mother, but he also thought she was a massive hypocrite.

And as the families stood for wedding portraits, all Byron could think about was how much he wanted his father, Alexander, and Edeline to be there.

Since I’m a huge fan of your writing, I’m curious: who are some your favorite writers and what are some of your favorite books or short stories??

Oh man, I've done so much reading over my life that it's hard to narrow down. Like I'm for sure going to leave people out.

For fiction: some of my favorite authors are the Bronte sisters (slight preference for Charlotte - Jane Eyre was one of my first loves and hugely shaped me as a reader and a writer), Daphne du Maurier (favorite of her books - Rebecca), Sarah Waters (can't decide between Fingersmith and The Paying Guests), Angela Carter (The Bloody Chamber), Susanna Clarke (Jonathon Strange and Mr Norell), Toni Morrison (Beloved), Robin Hobb (the Farseer trilogy and Fitz's further adventures, but I've heard good things about the Liveship Trader books!), Terry Pratchett (the Tiffany Aching books are particular favorites), and Anne Rice (well, depending on the book tbh, she's not very consistent lol - the first three Vampire Chronicle books are my favs from her), with special shout-outs to Robin McKinley (Beauty), Avi (The True Confession of Charlotte Doyle), LM Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables), Frank L Baum (I have read every single Oz book - there are a ton of them!) and Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in Time), who were my favs when I was a kid (along with the Babysitter's Club book lol - but they're mostly ghostwritten so I'm not sure who to credit!)

Right now, I'm re-reading (for the millionth time) The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter, which is a collection of fairy tale retellings - but that feels like a really inadequate way to describe it. It's very visceral, primal, and poetic. My favorite story from the collection is "The Bloody Chamber," which is a Bluebeard retelling. Bluebeard is one of my favorite fairy tales, but it understandably doesn't get a lot of adaptation. (I'm very curious what Disney's Bluebeard would look like lmao)

I'm also listening to the audiobook of The Vampire Lestat, which is the reason that Anne Rice is on that list. She really lost me with her later books, but listening to TVL reminded me that actually, she can be very good! She really excels at evocative descriptions and conveying emotion - she's very shameless, in a good way. A woman who always writes with her entire pussy, whatever else you might say about her.

But I actually read more nonfiction than fiction. I'm a big fan of memoirs - not celebrity memoirs (although Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died was probably my favorite book I've read this year), but memoirs that are more about someone grappling with the human experience - like, sometimes the author has been through something horrible and they've done a lot of mediation on what they've been through, or sometimes the author is just a very astute and entertaining observer of their own (and other people's) ridiculousness. Some of my favorites are Mary Karr, Caroline Knapp, David Sedaris, Cheryl Strayed, Jeanette Walls, Tara Westover, and Allie Brosh.

If I had to pick one to recommend - all of David Sedaris's books are extremely funny. He writes humorous personal essays, so I guess his books aren't really memoirs exactly (google says he's a humorist), but he usually writes about himself so I'm lumping him in this category lol. Me Talk Pretty One Day is a good place to start with his stuff - you will cry laughing.

I also love pop science and pop history - Mary Roach is a super approachable science writer with a quirky sense of humor. Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is so funny and candid - she asks every question you've ever had about dead bodies and then some. I also love Bill Bryson - another very accessible and funny writer - I really loved his A Short History of Nearly Everything, which covers exactly what it says. I ADORE Oliver Sacks - he was a neurologist who wrote so movingly about what it means to be human through the experiences of his patients - The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat reads more like a book of short stories, and I weep like a baby every time I read it (I actually started tearing up thinking of a few cases.) (Btw he's also written beautiful memoirs but I like his science writing best so I'm putting him here. Bill Bryson has written memoir too.) Carl Sagan is also approachable and humane - This Demon Haunted World is my favorite of his. Andrew Solomon's The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression is required reading for anyone who's dealt with mental illness, although it's difficult and painful at times (his Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity is also really good, but also difficult and painful - but worth it!)Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses has gorgeous prose and is a great book for artists and writers imo - it gets you thinking deeply about how we interact with the world.

For history, I am obsessed with this book called "The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity by David Graeber and David Wengrow - it will completely upend everything you think you know about the history of homo sapians. Mike Duncan got his start podcasting - his series Revolutions is about major world revolutions and is essentially like listening to an audiobook, so it's not a surprise his books are pretty fun too. Sarah Vowell has some really fun books about quirky historical topics - her Assassination Vacation is great (she goes on a roadtrip to visit locations in America where famous assassinations took place).

And here are a few other miscellaneous non-fiction writers I enjoy - Sebastian Junger (just finished his In My Time of Dying about his near death experience - super thought-provoking - but it was A Perfect Storm that made me love him), Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), Jon Krakauer (Into the Wild), Jon Ronson (The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry)

This was a fun question to think about! I hadn't realized I had such a strong preference for female writers until I actually listed all my favs out, which is an interesting thing to know about myself, so thanks for asking!

Kaylo's Special Birthday: Chapter 2

(At the Balan Theatre)

At the Balan Theatre, Stefan and Thea were speaking to Balan and Lance as well as Leo and Emma, who also happened to be there at the time, also visiting the maestros while feeding the Tims and Negati.

"We need your help, you guys," Thea said. "We want to set up a surprise party for Kaylo. But we can't let her suspect that we're planning something. Any advice?"

"Ooh, we can set up the surprise party here!" Emma suggested. "But we'll have to do it in another room. That was what the maids did back at my mansion when they were planning my fifteenth birthday party."

"That sounds like a good idea," Stefan said. "But is there a room that we can use in the theatre?"

"There is one room that is perfect for this party," Balan said. "Follow me and you all shall see." He and Lance led Stefan, Thea, Leo, and Emma down a hall until they eventually came across a pair of large doors. Balan pushed opened the doors, revealing a gigantic dining room.

"This is perfect, Balan!" Thea exclaimed. "This is the right place to hold Kaylo's party. Knowing my daughter, she would want the decorations to be pink, purple, and white."

"Of course, what kind of party would it be if the guests do not know about this occasion?" Lance pointed out. "I think that we should start off by handing every guest an invitation."

"I'll do the invitations," Leo said. "I can get the invitation cards at the store when I leave."

"Before you do so, let me write down the guest list for you, Leo." Thea pulled out a pen and paper from her pocket. "I'll also write down the place date that the party will take place as well as the time it will start and the time it will end." She started to write down everything.

"Ooh, maybe Mei, Trisha Jane, Rebecca, Marina, Debbie, Lora, and Aria can help us prepare for the party?" Emma asked. "As well as the Inhabitants?"

"Yes, that would be a great idea," Stefan agreed. "Why don't you try calling them up later on?"

"I sure will." Emma smiled.

"We'll also need to start getting refreshments and the cake ready," Balan said. "Sadly, I am not…great in the kitchen, unfortunately."

"I will help Aria work on the cake and refreshments, brother," Lance said. "It will be one step done for Kaylo's father and mother."

Thea handed Leo the list. "Think you and Emma can bring all of your friends here so we can tell them the plan?" She asked him.

"I sure can," Leo said, reading the guest list. On that list were the following names:

Giant 'Vote for Trump' Sign Defendants Win in N.Y. Court

A judge has ruled in favor of the defendants to display a massive 100-foot wide "Vote for Trump" sign in Amsterdam, New York, the New York Post reported Monday.

Anthony Constantino, CEO of Sticker Mule and leader of the political action committee responsible for the sign, fought back against the city's lawsuit, which claimed the 100-foot-wide sign that sits atop his firm's building violated local zoning laws and posed a traffic hazard.

Montgomery County Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Slezak lifted a temporary restraining order on Monday after hearing arguments, clearing the way for the sign's lighting.

"We are all set to light it up!" Constantino told The Post.

The city, represented by attorneys working with Democrat Mayor Michael Cinquanti, argued that the sign could distract drivers and that the company had not obtained the required permits. But Constantino's legal team successfully argued that the sign was far enough from major roads to avoid such risks.

"All I know is tonight the party is on and the lighting will occur and there is no court order prohibiting the lighting and display of the sign," Sal Ferlazzo, Constantino's lawyer, said. "So it's obviously a nice victory for Anthony and his team."

Nonetheless, the city has until Oct. 18 to refile the case. In the meantime, Constantino plans to move forward with a rally featuring guest speakers, including local politicians and athletes, to celebrate the court victory and the sign's debut.

Constantino added that Democrats "want to get rid of free speech and censor America and so the sign now signifies something even bigger than what I thought … In America, I got a First Amendment right."

"It's my building," he continued, "it's a beautiful sign and whether you're a Democrat or Republican, the sign is an uplifting thing for community enthusiasm."

Sam Raimi, ‘Charmed’ Stars Combs and McGowan, Lewis, Lee Added to FAN EXPO Cleveland Lineup

Legendary director Sam Raimi, the “Charmed” duo of Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan, “Harry Potter” standout Matthew Lewis and Jason Lee (“My Name is Earl,” The Incredibles) have been added to the celebrity lineup at FAN EXPO Cleveland, April 12-14 at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.

The three join previously announced The Lord of the Rings “four hobbits” Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, Danny Trejo (Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn) and Charlie Cox (“Daredevil,” “Boardwalk Empire”) as early guests on the roster, three months out from the pop culture extravaganza.

Raimi is one of the most celebrated and innovative directors of the past 40 years, making his first big splash with The Evil Dead in 1981. He is known for that franchise as well as hits like Spider-Man (2002), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) and the 2022 hit Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, among scores of producing, directing, writing and acting credits.

Combs starred in "Charmed," which ran for eight seasons and has adopted a huge, loyal following since, as "Piper Halliwell," one of three witch sisters fighting evil in modern day San Francisco. That followed her breakout role in 88 episodes of the hit series "Picket Fences" and later led to appearances in more than 30 series and movies and a long run as "Ella Montgomery" on "Pretty Little Liars."

Her “Charmed” co-star McGowan played long-lost sister "Paige Matthews" for the final five seasons of the series. The Italian-born actress first caught major attention for her role as "Tatum Riley" in the horror blockbuster Scream (1996) opposite Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette. She has appeared in more than 60 films and shows as an actress and is also an accomplished producer and director.

Lewis portrayed "Neville Longbottom" in numerous iterations of the Harry Potter franchise, including several of the blockbuster feature films, video games and videos. More recently, he has appeared as "Hugh Hutton" on the popular British series "All Creatures Great and Small."

A native of Southern California, Lee is a photographer, producer, director, and actor. Having established a successful career as a professional skateboarder during the sport's pivotal late 80s and early 90s period, Lee would go on to pursue acting, which would lead to working in film, television, and voiceover, and with such directors as Kevin Smith, Lawrence Kasdan, Cameron Crowe and Rebecca Miller.

"Uh, hello?" he said. "Can you... dumb it down a little for the guy who's still three centuries behind? I'm a nerd in my time, but this... this goes over my head."

“Exactly. Dads, moms, you guys know how this universe came to be, right?” Rebecca looks between her parents.

Spock is the one to answer. “An unexpected side effect of the previous Ambassador Spock’s usage of a as-of-yet still undeveloped element known only as ‘red matter’.”

“Not as undeveloped as you think…” Scotty murmurs, and Rebecca points to him.

“Exactly that. Continue?”

“While the red matter did create a black hole as expected, the Romulan mining ship Narada and the former ambassador’s ship were pulled into said black hole and accidentally sent through time, hundreds of years into the past. The Narada would land in 2233 and in a fit of fury, its captain would attack and obliterate the USS Kelvin. As we have come to understand, this would alter the course of history as he and the former ambassador knew it to be. In essence, our universe is an alternate version of events that the two time traveling ships knew. We are not the same as perhaps we should have been.” Spock finishes. “What do you mean, Mr. Scott?”

“He means red matter has been developed in this timeline, and Starfleet gave it to the next ‘Federation’s brightest engineer’– Lily. Since dad’s not able to do engineering experiments and Lily has already proven herself to be brilliant like him in everything to do with engineering. I found out doing research for this theory.” Rebecca sighs. “We’ve been playing with something we understand that already allows for easy time travel and is the cause of the creation of this universe. My theory is founded on that principle– red matter created this universe, and we continue to use it, which has weakened multiversal barriers and allows easier ‘clips’ between universes. When two locations align right, and under very distinct circumstances, people clip between. The most common would be going from here to somewhere else– transporters help with that. But under specific, but as of now unknown precisely, circumstances, such as Sam’s…”

“…he gets dropped on the street in San Francisco,” Bones finishes. “Damned brilliant. Whose bright idea was it to recreate the unknown substance that destroyed a planet? Dammit.”

And when she clicks off, Sammy sighs and reaches out to the McCoys, relieved when someone picks up. “Sam, thank go-- you’re struggling to keep it together. Let me guess, Uncle Leo and Aunt Carol called.”

Finding Peace in Another Part 4

The next few days went relatively well and without any notable incidents, just usual high school crap. Classes were still boring, people still gossiped. It was all the same shit, just a different day. 

Tests were still given and teachers stressed the importance of maintaining your GPA for college or University. It was all the same shit, just a different day. I had only been at school for three days, but I quickly fell into the swing of how things work around here, which was jarringly different from my school back home, though I knew my school was a special case. Jocks are in charge, people like Tyler Down were at the bottom of the proverbial food chain. I tended to drift between the top and middle depending on who I was hanging out with at the time. I was still new and shiny to these people, they didn’t care that I hung out with jocks who were assholes to my other friends or the regular kids like Clay, Tony, and Alex. They probably thought I would decide where I wanted to sit in the chain eventually. I don’t really care. I’ll hang out with who I want when I want. Most of the gossip never made its way to me and if it did, I didn’t really care. Montgomery and I texted fairly regularly during the day. But the same could be said for Zach and I or any of my other friends, so it wasn’t that different. I didn’t think into it too much. Maybe there was a little harmless flirting, but we are teenagers. It’s to be expected. He probably is just enamoured with the new girl. Doesn’t mean anything serious by it. I though to myself.

A couple of days before my dad was due home however, something changed. I was in bed reading when I heard something hit my window. Assuming it was just an acorn or something falling, I ignored it going back to my book. Until it happened again. And then again. Getting up, I went to the window and looked down. Standing under my window, was Montgomery de la Cruz. He looked up with what appeared to be a bruise forming on his face, though I couldn’t be sure given the height I was looking down from and the darkness. I pointed for him to go to the front door and I would be there in a minute. Throwing on a sweater to cover my body, I ran down the stairs to greet him. I gasped when I opened the door. His right eye was bruised and there was a gash above his eyebrow that looked somewhat deep. His lip was split and bleeding, his knuckles cut open and caked in dry blood. Quickly ushering him inside, I brought him upstairs to my bathroom, where I kept an extra first aid kit and some rubbing alcohol. Sitting on the toilet he watched me closely as I gathered all the necessary things to patch him up. Finally speaking, I heard him whisper “I didn’t know where else to go.” 

Eyeing him closely I wet a cloth to try and wipe up some of the blood that had trickled down his face. “It’s okay. Let’s just get you cleaned up?” I said, though it sounded more like a question, as I moved from his face to his knuckles. The cloth wasn’t doing much to remove the dry blood, so I motioned for him to stand at the sink. “I need you to stand and put your hand under the water, the cloth isn’t doing enough.” I explained while I rinsed his hand. I saw him wince and hiss at the water and I apologized. “I have to clean off the blood before I can do anything. Do you have any other injuries?” He shook his head. After the blood was cleaned off his hand, I took some cotton and put a bit of rubbing alcohol on his knuckles. 

“Fuck that stings.” He said, as he pulled his hand away. I took it again. 

“I know. I’m sorry. I need to disinfect it before I can assess the full damage and bandage it. It’s usually better if I don’t say anything, just go ahead and do it.” I said as I put some more alcohol on a cotton pad and gently cleaned his cut up knuckles. Nodding towards his face, I told him “I’ll clean that up more after I get your hand cleaned, bandaged and under some frozen peas.” I let out a small laugh as he tilted his head at me, clearly confused.

“Peas? As in the little green vegetables children hate?” 

“Exactly.”

“Uh... why? Can’t you just use an ice pack or ice cubes?” 

Shaking my head, I laughed again before explaining the method to my supposed madness as I bandaged his hand. “My Mom always used peas on my our injuries. More flexible than an ice pack and smaller than ice cubes so they get in all the nooks and crannies. Better coverage because the bag is more malleable than an ice pack or ice cubes. Plus snacks.” He nodded but seemed skeptical. “I’ll be right back. Stay here. I’m not done with you yet. And speaking of snacks, are you hungry? I can heat up some leftovers from dinner.” I could see he wanted to say yes but didn’t want to impose. “It’s not a problem. I’ll make you a plate and be right back with the peas.” I didn’t wait for a response as I ran downstairs. I got together a plate of the leftover pasta I had made, heating up a dish of sauce and setting a dish of cheese on the side unsure of his preferences for pasta and sauce. While the pasta and sauce heated up, I grabbed the peas and made my way back upstairs. He was right where I left him. “I hope pasta is okay. I heated some sauce up on the side because I wasn’t sure if you liked sauce, but if I didn’t heat it up then you would have liked it and then I would have-“

“You ramble when you’re nervous don’t you?” He asked cutting me off, though he smiled as he said it.

“Uh... I may have been told that once or twice, yeah.” 

“Only once or twice huh?” He chuckled. 

“Oh hush you.” I shushed him, holding back my laughter. Carefully placing the peas on his hand, I set to work getting his face taken care of. “Well there’s not much I can do about the bruising or your lip, but I can bandage that cut up. I need to clean it, and it’s going to sting more than your hand so I’m sorry. You can hold my hand if you want.” I held my hand out to him and smiled softly and I felt him grab it. Dipping a q-tip in some alcohol, I carefully cleaned around the cut to get any remaining blood off the edges. “Okay. This is probably going to hurt, so I’m sorry.” I told him before I carefully cleaned over the cut. He squeezed my hand as he sucked in a breath and swore under his breath. “I’m sorry. I’m almost done, just hang on one more second.” I talked him through the pain as I finished cleaning the wound. I waited a second for the alcohol to fully dry before I found a piece of gauze that was the right size and adhered it with some medical tape. As we finished, the microwave beeped and I stood him up, still holding his hand. Making a quick stop at my room for my book, I walked him back downstairs to have a bite to eat. 

As we sat down, he asked me “aren’t you going to ask about it?”

I looked at him questioningly “ask about what?”

“Why I’m here in the middle of the night? Why my face is bruised and cut up? Or why I needed you to spend your night cleaning me up?” He asked, obviously unsure about his feelings and confused about my lack of questions. 

I looked at him and cocked my head to the side. “Did you want me to ask about it? Because I can. I just don’t see a point in asking about it if you probably wouldn’t tell me anyway. What happened is your business. You can tell me if you want, and I will listen. Or you can not tell me, eat your pasta, and go to sleep. The choice is yours.” I told him, not unkindly. He nodded a little and ate his pasta in silence while I curled up on the chair and read my book, the bag of peas still on his hand. After he was done, I removed the bag and checked the swelling. “It seems to have gone down some. I can take it off now and then if you need it later, you can get the bag again.” 

“Okay.” 

“Did you want to sleep on the couch or with me? The guest room isn’t totally unpacked yet. And by that I mean the bed hasn’t been built and the mattress is old and lumpy and not worth sleeping on. But if you’re uncomfortable then you can totally sleep there. It’s fine.” He looked at me, surprised by my forwardness once again. 

“Uh... are you really offering to share your bed with a guy you barely know?” 

I nodded as if it wasn’t a big deal. “Yes? I mean, the couch is nice. It’s comfortable for a nap, but I wouldn’t want to sleep on it through the night. As long as there’s no funky business going on, I don’t see an issue?” I said, using the term I had always heard Jake use for sex. 

He thought for a second. “I’ll sleep with you, if you don’t mind. And I would like to be gone before Bryce leaves for school. He will ask questions I don’t want to answer otherwise.” He decided. I nodded in understanding.

“Alright. Just so you know, I sleep on the outside of the bed, so if you need to get up in the night, just wake me. I also sleep in the fetal position, so you’ll have lots of room.” I held my hand out for him to take again. He took it gratefully and I took him upstairs to my bed. As he stripped down to his T-shirt and boxers and crawled into bed, I made sure to set an extra alarm for him so he would be gone in time. I crawled into bed beside him and tried not to think about the last time I had a boy in my bed. Oh how I missed Bailey. Rolling onto my back, I heard Montgomery ask me a question. 

“Rebecca? How did you know how to clean and bandage me up so easily?” 

Sighing, I shrugged. “My friends back home tended to need patching up from time to time. I guess I just got used to it. It’s almost second nature now.” 

“Hmmm.” I heard him acknowledge my answer. I thought he had fallen asleep when I heard him speak again. “Thank you for not prying tonight.” 

“You’re welcome. Go to sleep now okay?”

“Mmmkay. G’night Becca.” He muttered, half asleep. 

“Good night Monty.” I said into the darkness before falling asleep. When I woke up in the morning he was gone and his side of the bed was cold. There was a note on the pillow that read ‘thanks. See you at school.’
