some explanations for some characters that might not seem like they fit here: All but three characters here were listed as Jews (I am Jewish, I can say that) in the DC Database category page and I've made sure there's a source to that (DCEU Barry calling himself a Jewish Boy, DC Superhero Girls Babs being in a Happy Hanukka post from the show's account, etc). The three characters that weren't are Bruce Wayne (Jewish by association with Kate Kane bc her writers don't know how Judaism works and once made her dad Jewish which would make his sister, Bruce's mom Jewish and make him Jewish), Booster Gold (confirmed to be Jewish by Jeff Katz, a Booster Gold writer, on Twitter) and Cissie King-Jones (I decided she's Jewish, and it's my poll, so shut up), and I have explanations for them all.

Beth Fox’s provocative poems cover a lot of ground: geographically, from Tennessee to Mexico and back to New England, and, in terms of content and usage, enlisting participants that range from snapping turtles to George Washington Carver. She captures our attention with striking details and devices (in “After the Fourth Reading…” a crossed-out line is a significant part of the poem) and asks the question “Can a biscuit cure a nightmare?” With great imagination and insight, the poet gives us striking ways to look at our human condition, and, like her character Buster, catches phrases only to let them go.

–Bob Demaree is a widely published author who has several collections of poems, including After Labor Day (2017.

Beth Fox’s chapbook impresses me by both its wide scope of topics and styles, and its unpretentious yet profound insight. Twisting together poems from gun control to family history, learning race at school and at home in Tennessee to meditations on language or Covid, Fox ranges from straight narrative to oblique enigma, with a subtle imagination and delicate feeling for words evident everywhere. There are so many delights in this manuscript.

–Brian Evans-Jones is a widely published poet and teacher who was Poet Laureate of the Hampshire, England In 2017, he won the Maureen Egen Writers Award. He publishes learning resources at The Poetry Place.

On one level, these good poems, at once forthright and lyrical, give us a closely observed country life—quotidian, domestic, multigenerational. And to her portraits of home and village life, she brings what Walter Brueggemann calls a “neighborly compassion.” But there is also a politics of care woven throughout Beth Fox’s work that will not shy away from the social consequences of kindness and cruelty that shape our personal and communal histories. “It doesn’t help to know that some are okay,” says the speaker in the first section of Reaching for the Nightingale. That some are not haunts every poem in this collection.

I plot on Tumblr and write on Discord but I'm willing to do everything on Discord, if you prefer it that way. I write in third person, past tense and semi-lit/lit (2-4 paragraphs average; sometimes more and hardly ever less). I try my hardest to get daily replies up but sometimes work, life, or writer's block gets in my way, and it more realistically takes me 2-3 days.

I'm mainly interested in canon x canon pairings (MxM preference but willing to do MxF or FxF). I might be talked into canon x OC (only MxM or FxF). I like canon and canon divergent plots. If it makes sense within the universe, I'll usually be okay with doing it. I don't have any triggers and do have a preference for writing smut for these (with a healthy dose of plot) but that's not a requirement.

SMT IV, SMT II, and Disco Elysium

Alright! This one will take a while, but I have many opinions for each of these. I hope nobody minds me doing repeats of certain characters though. My feelings on Daleth are vast abd complex:

SMT IV:

My Dearest Blorbo: Issachar. He toes the line between Blorbo and Glup, but I think his prominence in the prologue of IV secures him a spot as my favorite character from the game. I would kill to get a short prologue type deal where you get to play as him when he's training with Flynn or cavorting with demons.

My Most Gentlest Scrunkly: Has to be Alice. She was with me the entire rest of the gane from when I had her in IV and I wish her all the best. She doesn't have Scrunkly energy of her own, per se, but she is my Scrunkly as per the criteria of the ask.

Scrimblo Bimblo: Probably Issachar again. He doesn't get nearly as much spotlight as I, personally, feel he deserves.

The Glup Shitto I have chosen: Commander Hope. Like I said with Issachar, this can really be interchanged between the two. However, what makes Hope more obscure than Issachar is that you never get a boss fight against him, and thus never get to see his samurai skills in action... Unless you buy the DLC for Apocalypse where they make him green.

The Poorest of Little Meow Meows: How many times can I put Navarre here without it becoming annoying? I love him, he's like another of my meow meows but even more pathetic and unlikeable, I love him. I actually like him even more alive than as a ghost, so yay for base game Navarre! Earning the award for most useless holy knight.

Horse Plinko: Also Navarre.

Eeby Deeby: Abbot Hugo, absolutely, for sure.

SMT II:

Blorbo: Daleth, from my shows. I wish I could play as him.

Scrunkly: Beth. She's the most Scrunkly character in the game, I'm pretty sure. She's just shaped that way.

Scimblo Bimblo: Maybe Madame would fit here? If she's too popular, then I'll throw Daleth out here again.

Glup Shitto: I don't think I have a Glup Shitto for SMT II... Maybe Anoon. I love her, even if she has questionable taste in men. Yes I love Daleth too, but this isn't about me in this one case.

Poor Little Meow Meow: ... Daleth again? I'm sorry everything on this list has been Daleth or Daleth related so far, but I just fucking love that green bastard.

Horse Plinko: Still Daleth. My feelings on this idiot bastard are plentiful.

Eeby Deeby: Puck. Goddamn fairy and his status ailment giving, run around the dungeon, time wasting, no good lousy self. Ten superhells.

Disco Elysium:

Blorbo: This is the toughest question on the list so far. It's either Harry or Kim, but can I rightfully put one above the other? Kim gets it, but only because Harry is just so pathetic that I can't help but think of him as poor, and little, and perhaps a meow meow.

Scrunkly: A certain stick insect. :)

Scrimblo Bimblo: La Revacholiere. I am enraptured every time she speaks, through whispers on the wind and chills up my spine.

Glup Shitto: That one Moralist guy you meet in the young man's room. He's hilarious and tone deaf and I hate him so much but I want to put him on the spot to defend his bs centrism so bad. I wish you could see him more than just the once. Some Sunday Friend.

Poor Little Meow Meow: Here he is!!! Right where he and his skills need to be, one Harry duBois. What a fuckin guy. This old man *is* my poor little meow meow. I will not have his status disputed.

Horse Plinko: Cuno, but only because he would actively fight back. You can't force the Cuno into a Plinko he did not already fully intend to enter. Cuno is in the Plinko of his own design. The Cuno *is* the plinko, pigs all fucking up on the bars, devoured by the flames shit. Real fucking inferno style shit.

Days went by, and Lin had adapted rather well into her new work.

After a week, Polly separated her from Edith (to which the cat-eyed faerie scowled, not liking the idea of not having someone to share her work with) and started giving Lin her own tasks and assignments. The mortal woman felt a bit lucky that she had a bit of practice of doing all the hard work at home because of her Ah Ma's frail and aged body.

Rooms and halls Under the Mountain were rather dark, hardly ever seeing the touch of sunlight which made it harder for her to see all the dust and dirt in every nook and cranny. So she had to pull an extra effort in her work or get a mouthful from Polly and a cane to her arm (which she had earned on her first day of working alone and she did not plan to get again).

Edith had become close to her, while Lin was trying her best to be on friendly terms with the carrot-haired faerie while still keeping her distance. The black-haired woman had also started to remember the names of other faeries who lived on her floor; Penelope with her webbed hands, Vicky with her foxtail, and Beth with her hooves. There was also Ada with her green vine hair, and Lavina used to live on the same floor as them too until The Matthias and Markus Battle happened between them and now she lived two levels below them. There were two more of them, but Lin couldn't remember their names, only their faces.

On her fourth day of work, her uniforms were done. The blonde tailor (Lin really ought to learn her name) brought it to the kitchen during breakfast and shoved it on her face. There were three dresses and some hanfu versions of her uniform, which she was absolutely grateful for.

(When the tailor had finally left them with a swagger in her walk after seeing the satisfied smile on Lin's face, the young woman turned towards her friend.

"What was her name?" she deadpanned.

Edith took a moment to chew and swallow her food before answering.

"Taylor," she answered shortly and returned to stuffing her mouth with food.

"Taylor the Tailor?" Lin gaped.

Edith nodded in reply.)

Edith was kind enough to fill her in with every single gossip that happened Under the Mountain, and while she appreciated Edith's gesture and kindness, Lin wondered what would she do with all the information Edith had shared, or how the ginger fae had gotten that information in the first place.

And every single night, Lin would stand in front of her door with her hand on her doorknob, but her gaze would be trained by the dark tunnel that sits a few steps away from her own door. The black-haired woman was tempted to go through the dark tunnels that had always invited her with its gently breezing wind and pine forest scent.

But the idea of being lost Under the Mountain for hours or even being trapped in one of those holes scared her too much, and no matter how enticing it was, the black-haired woman had always ended up coming inside her room and locking her door instead of traveling down that tunnel.

After her first meeting with Amarantha, she had not seen the Lady again or Gavin or literally anybody else that she could possibly bother and interrogate until she could get her answers.

Until one day, an opportunity presented itself in the form of breakfast duty.

Lin, Edith, and a handful of other servants were chosen to serve breakfast for the soldiers Under the Mountain. Edith was tasked with helping the cook and had to stay near the stove for the entire morning which pissed her off, while Lin had the easier one and prepared the food to be cooked by cutting, peeling, cleaning, and even marinating nearly everything.

Waking up before dawn had irked her so badly, and her hands were already sore at so early in the morning which didn't help her mood. Having men, especially male faeries, stare at her throughout the morning made it even worse.

Even the ever-so-talkative Edith had reduced her talking to occasional complaints and replaced her spicy gossips with scowls and grumbling.

And then Lin saw a familiar brown-haired faerie.

Her dark eyes blinked a couple of times, trying to make sure that it really was him before she embarrassed herself by calling the wrong person. Her head kept moving around, trying to see his face (or his ears) as he stood with his back facing her when grabbing his breakfast from the serving table.

'Gavin' finally turned around and showed his face and his too-familiar horse ears.

Still unsure (how many horse-eared faeries are in Under the Mountain?) but not wanting to miss the chance, Lin shot her hand in the air and quickly waved violently at him. His head turned to look at her directions, and his gaze immediately fell.

Oh that's him alright, she grinned.

Gavin quickly looked away and pretended to look around, trying to find an empty spot. Fortunately, every table and seats were packed, so the brunet had no other choice but to sit at the ladies' table near the kitchen.

"Edith," Lin turned her head to look at the ginger. "Do you think you can give me a few moments alone with him?" the black-haired woman plead and gave Edith her best puppy eyes.

Edith stared menacingly with her cat green eyes. "Only if you tell me about this later," she threatened playfully—even though Lin know she was dead serious—and grabbed their plates before heading to the kitchen to help with the dishes.

Lin giddily waited until Gavin sat at her table with a long resigned sigh. She let him take the first bite of his meal before she opened her mouth to question him.

"Has Amarantha said anything about me again?" she whispered to him while leaning in, not wanting anyone to hear what she had to say.

The brunet scowled while chewing on his food. He swallowed it down in one big gulp before grumbling, "The least you could do is wait for me to swallow my food."

"I waited for you to take a bite," she argued pettily.

The black-haired woman waited patiently for Gavin to answer as he took a few more spoonfuls before answering.

The taller man merely shrugged. "No, not at all."

Her shoulders dropped in disappointment.

If anything, it seemed that she had forgotten about you, he thought quietly to himself, not wanting your shoulders to drop any further.

"Do you think," she paused in uncertainty before raising her head to meet his eyes. "Do you think you can mention me and say that I've been hoping to see her?"

"Or, mention my name and see how she reacts?" Lin quickly added after seeing the deadpanned expression on Gavin's face.

"Or anything!" the younger woman desperately plead when Gavin's stony face accompanied him chomping down his breakfast.

"Please," she begged, letting her dark eyes meet Gavin's light brown ones.

Seeing that Gavin's horse ears had twitched in annoyance, the younger woman let him finish his breakfast and take a big gulp of his drink before he sighed. Gavin pushed away his plates before putting his elbows on the table and folding his hands. Seeing his seriousness, Lin quickly sat up straight and leaned closer, not wanting to miss anything he had to say.

"In this line of work," he hesitantly started, as if trying to find the right words.

"It's better if Amarantha does not recognize you."

Lin's shoulders tensed up as Gavin stared at her eyes with all the seriousness he had mustered. For a second, she thought that he was saying it just to get her off his ass and stop asking about Amarantha, but after seeing the look in his eyes and his tense posture, she knew he was dead serious.

The younger woman understood his concern, of course. The Deceiver was not well known for her kindness, especially towards mortals and humans. But she needed her answers. She didn't know how long she could stand living underground, with barely any window or door that leads to the outside.

"If you ended up on her wrong side, she could do more than just torture you or even kill you. It's better if she forgets about you at all," he continued with his voice lowered until it was barely a whisper.

Lin leaned back to her initial position and scowled at him, her eyes furrowed in annoyance. Gavin was about to lean back and stood up from his seat before she grabbed him by his sleeves.

"I still need my answers!" She hissed loudly at him, her eyes were glaring and begging at him at the same time. The black-haired woman grabbed his shirt and tried to pull him closer to her, making sure that he was staring at her in the eyes.

"I'm not asking you to remind her of my existence at all times," Lin plead, but her eyes were anything but pleading. Her dark eyes were angry and annoyed—like she was talking to someone who has been annoying her despite it being the other way around. "Just say a word of my name! Remind her once in a while," she begged.

Gavin wondered how could she glare at someone so fiercely while begging them for help.

Deep down inside, she was grateful for being so tired and cranky early in the morning or she wouldn't have the courage to do that to someone she barely knew, especially a fae soldier who could probably break her neck like a twig.

Out of nowhere, Madam Beatrice cleared her throat loudly from behind them.

Lin and Gavin jumped up in fear and shock, the first hoping that she did not hear anything they had been conversing about, while the latter was surprised at how the old faerie snuck up on a well-trained soldier so easily.

Realizing that nearly all of the soldiers were getting up to put away their dirty dishes and leave, Lin started to walk away to the kitchen while carrying Gavin's plate, but not before throwing faerie one last withering look with her dark eyes.

Gavin merely sighed before following his fellow soldiers to leave the kitchen, ignoring any questions they were throwing at him.

"Sooooo," Edith trailed with an exciting edge in her tone.

"What was that about?" the ginger grinned while nudging Lin playfully with her elbow.

The two of them were tasked with cleaning the remaining dishes since they came in last to the kitchen. Everybody else had left to do other assignments given by Madam Beatrice while the older faerie was having another discussion with Polly over a cup of tea, leaving the two ladies alone with their dishes.

The younger woman sighed in resignation. She knew she had it coming, but nevertheless, it was still burdening to lie to Edith. She had been nothing but friendly and welcoming and it made Lin feel so much guilt to lie to her.

Well, she didn't want to tell the truth, but that didn't mean she had to lie either.

"He uh," Lin trailed unsurely, her eyes looking into the distance with a hard stare.

Was it a bad memory? Edith frowned after seeing her expression.

"He knows someone," the black-haired woman answered (even though it sounded more like a question to the cat-eyed faerie.) "Who knows about my contract."

"Your contract?" The question slipped through Edith's mouth before she could stop it. She leaned into Lin as if trying to hear more of what she had to say. To be honest, the latter was rather impressed by Edith's ability to wash the dishes while fully concentrating on what she had to say. The black-haired woman had a hard time wiping up with the wet dishes and keeping up with Edith even though she was the one with the easier job.

"I have to work here because my grandmother made a contract to one of the Councils here," the latter explained while double-checking a wiped plate before putting it away. Lin hoped Edith didn't notice the gray truth she had given her.

"And I didn't get a chance to fully read or understand the contract, so I asked Gavin to connect me with one of the Councils."

Lin finished her sentence at the same time she finished wiping her last dish. The black-haired woman turned her back on the sink and crossed her arms while she leaned on the sink, waiting for the cat-eyed faerie to finish cleaning it from any food remains or soap bubbles.

"Well," Edith started when she had finished cleaning the sink. "You could always ask Polly or Beatrice to assign you to the higher-ups," she shrugged casually.

She was partially right, except for the fact that Lin was no faerie and she didn't know what faeries would do to a mortal woman like her, especially if they come from a high status.

It's not that faeries who come from lower status couldn't harm her, but having a high status would help someone get away with any single misdemeanor (or even crime) they could do. It was one of the many things her grandmother had taught her. They have the power, the influence, the fortune, and all the luck on their side, so it'd be best to avoid any hassle with powerful people.

And Lin has seen the proof of it with Winnifred.

Winnifred, a girl of the same age as hers, blonde hair and blue-eyed, and ambitions higher than the sky. She had always boasted of her beauty and looked down on her poor upbringing, always claiming that she was a bastard of a king or a lost princess. Poor old Winnifred who wanted a better life for herself and ended up dead because of her arrogance.

Last Autumn, Winnifred had bragged of her 'allegedly' future husband. How she had slept with the oldest merchant's son, who unfortunately happened to be someone's fiancé. Another unfortunate luck that happened to Winnifred was his fianceé happened to be the beloved daughter of a lord who ruled over their village.

The scandal had spread like wildfire, and Lin had supposed, it had eventually reached the ears of the old rich merchant and the Lord of her land.

Two weeks later, Winnifred went missing.

And a few days later, her body was found hanging on a tree.

Nobody spoke of it, but everybody had known the proud girl had not killed herself, for she had been too excited of the prospects of being married to a rich family and having a baby as her insurance. Everybody had also known that the merchant's family had not been innocent. But in fear of their wrath, they kept quiet about it.

Edith stared quietly as gears turned inside her friend's head.

"Nah," she decided while shaking her head in disagreement. "I'll just bother Gavin about it."

The ginger giggled at her answer.

"Girls!" Polly barked from her seat. "Come on now, you have lots of work to do!"

Lin could only sigh while Edith answered for them.

"Coming!"

Amarantha would rather be dead than caught in this situation.

Her, the Lady Under the Mountain, had stepped her foot into the mortal realm.

She could hear all the outrage and scandal and how no one would ever make her forget about this incident for the rest of her life.

But it wasn't a task she could leave to someone else, not when she had a daemati in her court. The last thing she need was someone knowing about Lin and using the young woman against her.

So she had no other choice but to do this all by herself.

It wasn't hard to locate the house she had lived in.

Amarantha could scent Lin's dormant magic and faerie scent in a village full of mortals easily, but there was another. This one was stronger and more powerful, the scent of an older faerie with more experience.

Not waiting any longer, she traced those scents into a house on the top of the hill, just at the edge of the village.

An old woman sat by the porch.

No, not an old woman.

A faerie.

Under the dim light, the Deceiver could see that she was old, old enough to be called a grandmother with her grey hair and crinkles mapping her face gracefully. Her eyes were dark and shaped like an almond.

A Xian descent.

Amarantha's dark eyes widened in recognization.

No, there was no way...

The old crone merely smiled, as if they had just shared an old joke.

"Are you not going to sit, little red?" She gestured to the seat next to her, a table sat between it with two cups of chamomile tea, like she had known Amarantha was coming.

The redheaded faerie merely stared at her in shock, her mouth wide agape, like she just saw a dead person rise from their grave.

Well it wasn't so far from the truth.

"You're supposed to be dead," Amarantha gasped as she stumbled back clumsily, unlike her usual behavior.

Dead with Clythia. Dead with all of Clythia's army and servants and handmaidens.

Ah Ma merely chuckled. "And my goddaughter is supposed to be here with me, but things don't always go the way we think it would, little red."

"Come on now, we have lots to talk about and your tea is not getting any warmer." Ruo Lan patted the seat next to her, inviting Amarantha to sit once more.

As if hypnotized, the Deceiver staggered a few steps forward before taking a seat next to Ruo Lan.

The old crone took a sip of her warming tea as Amarantha let out a heavy sigh.

"Clythia was pregnant," Ruo Lan started without a warning.

Amarantha made a sound like someone had punched her in the stomach.

"That's why she insisted to be away during her final moments, using the rebellion down the south as an excuse." Old granny Ruo Lan continued calmly while taking the occasional sip of her tea like she was telling an old forgotten children's story and not a story of Clythia that Amarantha had never known.

"She gave her daughter in my care and sent us away to the mortal realm, promising that she would come when it is safe," the old faerie croaked, a heavyweight sitting on her chest. She had remembered the day Lin was born, how Clythia had cried tears of joy for the first time in her life and how she couldn't stop holding her daughter until the day came where she had to go back into her battles.

"She never came," Ruo Lan finished with a pained voice, tears threatening to pool in her eyes.

The Deceiver sat there in silence, trying her best to process everything she had just been told.

It didn't make any sense to her. If Clythia truly cared about her daughter then she could've sent her to Hybern, where she would be much safer there instead of the mortal realm. And why would Clythia feel the need to hide her daughter when they still had the upper hands? Despite the fact that mortals had the Night Court and their most powerful armies on their side, Hybern still had more than a 50-50 chance to win the war. Everything only took turns for worse after Jurian's betrayal and Clythia's death.

The realization hit Amarantha like a splash of cold water. Her head snapped to look at Ruo Lan in the eyes.

"You lie," she growled with death in her eyes.

Ruo Lan stared at the girl she had taken care of since she could barely walk, eyes shining with pity. "I only speak the truth, little red."

Something snapped inside Amarantha. All the mourning she had not done, the sadness she had kept, the rotting, festering wound that had been covered with bandage without proper care, and it all blew up right there and then.

"But that would mean that Clythia knew about Jurian!" Amarantha hysterically screamed as she threw the table across the patio, her voice croaked with sorrow and heartbreak.

"Why would she know it and still walk into the battle!?" The hood in her head slid down, revealing her blood-red hair as she picked up her own chair and hurled her own chair against the wall, smashing it into pieces and splinters of wood.

"Into his trap!?" She snapped her head to glare at Ruo Lan in anger and fury and despair. Warm tears fell down her face, and Ruo Lan merely stared at Amarantha in pity.

A long time ago, she had seen a redheaded little faerie who had thrown her toys in anger because her sister wouldn't play with her.

And now, she watched as that same hot-tempered child threw her furniture around because her sister was dead.

Her heart ached in nostalgia and old age. She had watched her little ladies take their first steps She had followed them into battle and taken care of their injuries She had witnessed as the older one succumbed to her own bloodlust and power hunger. She had seen the little one fall in love and die out of love. And she had taken care of the result of her own love and foolishness.

She had played many roles in her life. A nanny, a handmaiden, a godmother, and a grandmother.

Ruo Lan was tired, and deep down inside, she knew that her time was coming close.

Her only fear was that she couldn't spend her last moments with her beloved granddaughter.

"Despite being the younger one, there is one thing that Clythia had understood faster and better than you, my dear Amarantha." Ruo Lan groggily stood up with her cane, trying to see eye-to-eye with the Lady Under the Mountain.

"Where your power hunger and bloodlust had been growing, Clythia had learned loved. It was a foolish love that had cost her own life, but she had learned how to love nonetheless." The old crone continued, "And with that love, came fear. Her fear of losing her loved ones. Her fear of you—"

Amarantha cut her off, "She would never fear me," she spat. "I am her sister, her protector, and we had always been there for each other," the redhead fumed in anger.

Ruo Lan stared at her sharply. She didn't say anything, but the older fae stared at Amarantha like they both knew that it wasn't true.

And Amarantha knew that.

She noticed how her sister seemed distant during the last months of her life. How Clythia seemed to be stuck in her own world, leaving Amarantha and their battles alone, only waiting for her command instead of actively helping her sister scheme and plan their strategy like they used to. She remembered Clythia's longing gaze to the distance as if she would rather be somewhere else other than the battlefield. But most of all, Amarantha remembered her sister's fear of herself.

Clythia would keep her distance to her sister, and tense up every time she was around. She could vividly remember how Clythia clenched her fist every time Amarantha mentioned something about her plans towards humanity and the pitiful mortals.

She had thought it was because of her sister's human lover.

But now, she knew better.

Clythia had feared for her daughter's life, but more of all she had feared Amarantha's wrath and bloodlust.

Ruo Lan understood her more than anybody else.

After all, she had been there to witness the Deceiver's descent into her thirst for power.

Amarantha was quiet, and her old nanny walked inside her house without any words before coming back out with envelopes of letters.

"Here," Ruo Lan threw the batch of envelopes to Amarantha's chest, which the latter had caught in ease (and silently cursed for reacting so easily to her old nanny).

"Do me a favor and give this to my bǎo bèi," the old grandma mumbled as her hand put a cigar between her lips. Her hands fumbled to strike a match and lit up her cigar before shaking the burning match and throwing it away carelessly. She took a deep breath and exhaled a puff of smoke.

Amarantha turned her chin up as she tucked the letters under her crossed arms. "And what makes you think that I won't burn these letters into ashes?" She questioned with an air of arrogance.

Ruo Lan merely inhaled another deep breath before slowly exhaling it, blowing it right at Amarantha's face.

The old lady shrugged despite Amarantha's attempt of intimidation. "You wouldn't do that to the woman who used to change your diapers, would you?" she answered slyly with a twinkle to her eyes and a grin on her lips.

The dark night concealed many things from her weary eyes, but Ruo Lan knew that Amarantha's eyes had darkened in annoyance, her face turned into a sour scowl. She also knew that her nails had turned into claws, ready to slit the old woman's throat and leave her out to bleed.

But Ruo Lan also knew that Amarantha would not do any of that.

Because if the heartless faerie had a weakness for anything, it would be for her family.

So the old granny Ruo Lan watched as the Lady Under the Mountain slowly backed away into the darkness with her eyes deadly as ever before fleeing into the night.

The old woman merely let out a resigned sigh before taking another drag from her cigar.

6. "I think they're drowning!"

Everything was a blur from the moment Henry felt your panic and fear, and heard a voice yell "I think they're drowning!". He didn't think or hesitate and, next thing he knew, he was out in the water and dragging you back towards the beach.

A sick sense of dread washed over him as he laid you on the sand. Your lips were beginning to turn colors and you were deadly still, your chest not showing any signs of breath. He knew he should've let Beth revive you—she was the team doctor after all—but he couldn't stop. He wouldn't do anything less than everything he could to save you.

Henry compressed your chest, counting in his head as he went along, and he breathed into your mouth, but you still showed no sign of life. He went through the cycle again, and nothing.

When Beth pulled at his shoulder, Henry realized that his eyes were stinging with tears. You were slipping and he needed to try something else. You couldn't die. Not like this, not so soon.

Henry had an idea and, as a last ditch effort, he hovered his hand over your chest and focused on feeling with his mind, searching for....got it. He moved his hand up and once it reached your face, water was forced out of your mouth and onto the sand below. You choked and gasped, and your eyes flew open, instantly meeting Henry's.

Without a single thought about it, you sat up and threw your arms around Henry, sobbing as you realized what had just happened. And at the memory of how terrified you had been when you got caught up by the current and couldn't get back to the surface.

"Hey, shh." Henry embraced you and rubbed your sand covered back. "You're...you're okay..."

All your friends stood around you, but that didn't cross your mind. What you knew was that you had nearly died without doing or saying so many things, so the words you'd kept hidden for so long slipped out as you held onto him. "I love you, Henry," you whispered.

He pulled back to look down at you and your tear stained cheeks. "I love you, too," he said, softly enough that only you could catch it.

You hugged him close again until Beth came to your other side, her goggles strapped on and glowing green. "I need to make sure there's no water left in your lungs."

Nodding, you leaned into him again as the shaking and sobbing continued to subside. Because you were safe, and Henry had made sure of that.
