This isn’t a request more of a question, do you have any recommended AAC apps? There’s so many and it’s overwhelming
We've only tried 3, those being TD Snap, CoughDrop, and LetMeTalk.
We really don't recommend LetMeTalk. It's good in that it's free, but that's about all there is going for it. It doesn't get active support and there's no way to contact the developers so you can easily get locked out, and I don't believe there are many voice options either
CoughDrop is fine. Not our favourite, and recently there have been some concerns since if I remember right, they were acquired by a Christian company that proselytizes (tries to convert others to their faith), and they are able to view user's boards without permission. They're also laggy. That said, they have a long free trial, and if you want to get started with AAC but aren't sure if you want to spend the money yet for a more robust system, CoughDrop can help you trial that. It can also be edited on desktop, not just on your device, which we do like
TD Snap is our favourite and what we currently use. It's similar enough to CoughDrop that it's easy to switch to after the former's trial (like we did), but it works so much better. It's easy to edit, it has a lot of voice options (though mind you, some are paid), and it uses the PCS Symbols, which we find are mostly comprehensive and more diverse than other symbol sets. It's cheaper than a lot of other robust AAC systems are but it does cost, and it also only works on iPad (and Windows, but that's for far more expensive), so you can't use it on a phone
Here's a Google Document (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ofeQKoN6p3uI7FhWSZCGULA2rJCJgS1RAR6zxeON4Vk/edit#heading=h.xplqkmtex4xd) that has information on different AAC systems, as well as a lot more resources related to other AAC things. We used it for our own AAC decisions like purchasing an iPad and choosing an app, and we got permission to share it

Okay, I am writing my introduction post again Because I made my old one with LetMeTalk and I do not like that AAC a lot.
I am Aiden and I need to practice my AAC so I made this blog. AAC is also one of my special interests. I only use my aac board here. I am mostly verbal but I often prefer AAC. And most day I find mouth words a bit difficult or shaky at some point
I use TD Snap most. Please feel free to ask questions!

Amy has been working on aac set up. Especially since school starts tomorrow and struggled to speak during open house.
But trying to customize the app made me realize two things.
1.) it’s not as easy to customize as I thought. I always saw that it takes years to customize device for individual and thought Since Amy was able to customize LetMeTalk quick and love organizing in certain cases (like this one) it would be done soon. I’ve gotten a long way but it’s most definitely harder then thought. I still managed to finish in 2 days, still adding things in but set up is set, only words being added now.
2.). AAC apps don’t really design the app with poc in mind. Pictures that talking about yourself only have one skin color which is wayy to pale for me (I’m black; African American). Words like: I, Me, Myself only show a white person so if I want the picture to show a person with my skin color I’ll have to either make one myself or find someone who made one already.
Of course I don’t really mind it but it’s still weird and upsetting to see. I’m black, African and Native American. My skin color is no where near white, so seeing that is somewhat upsetting. Don’t fully care cause picture are for me and I care less about skin color and more about talking but still.
So please. When talking about aac, especially high tech aac, remember that poc use it aswell

Am overview of all the free AAC apps I’ve tried/heard of. None of them are as good as the paid ones, but I feel like a lot of decent ones are being ignored.
These are all for iOS, and generally listed from best to worst, though I think any of them could be made to work.
SymboTalk is the best one I’ve found. It requires a Lot of customization to be good, but it has features I haven’t seen in many/any other free apps. Color Coded symbols, up to 72 buttons per board, linking boards together rather than only to the main one, & many languages. This is the one I’m currently customizing, only downside is you need to pay for iCloud storage, so no linking between devices without payment.
Twinkl Symbols is another good one, though it’s confusing to start. It has a lot of downloadable symbols, built in templates like Visual Schedules, and up to 40 symbols per board. It requires less customization, but I wasn’t able to get it nearly as robust, as it lacks a lot of features you see in paid apps.
Leeloo is meant for autistic kids, but i think adults could use it too. It has cutesy pictures, a lot of voices, and mostly phrases rather than words. It barely allows for any customization without the paid version, however this can be mostly solved by the Text-to-Speech option. Overall it would work for Verbal Shutdowns/Speech Loss Episodes and similar things, but wouldn’t be good for long term use.
Vocable is a text based AAC app. You can preprogram as many phrases as you want, and there’s a keyboard, but there is no sentence bar. The main reason I mention it is because I has built in eye tracking for any device that’s compatible (which is most), which no other free app I’ve seen has.
Text To Speech! Is exactly what it sounds like, you can type things in with a keyboard, and save/categorize phrases. It’s like a worse but free version of Proloquo4Text. I never tried it because i like symbol-based, but thought I should give a typing-based option too.
I would also like to give an honorable mention to LetMeTalk, it functions well, probably like a worse version of SymboTalk, but it hasn’t updated in 4 years and the audio has stopped playing for most people, so its no longer useable.
These are the most notable ones I’ve tried, all others were non-functional, behind a secret paywall, or way to slow to justify reviewing.
If anybody wants more in-depth reviews for any of these, or another one not mentioned, send me as ask, but this post is already way too long 😅.

Listen to me!
Tumblr media
My mother, as it turns out, has dementia. I suspected but it was only recently diagnosed. Mom has been in hospitals & now in a care facility because she contracted COVID in early December. We’re limited to telephone talks because there’s a pandemic going on which is trickier than I thought. Conversations last 30-60+ minutes mostly because of what I call the Conversational Loops. Each loop has from one to four topics; we start with one, move through the topics and then begin again as if we’ve not already talked about it. It’s the dementia, so I try to be patient but there are times, like today, when it was more challenging than usual. When the call ended, I took a minute then walked downstairs for a break. During my telling of the call, my SO -who apparently had listened to my side of the call from downstairs- did what they often do. That is, not to acknowledge the words I’d just said about the sadness & despair of dementia, but to begin criticizing my mother in a loud, “jokey” voice. “What, she thinks you’re a doctor asking how long COVID will last?! She thinks you’re in charge of transferring patients back to their retirement homes?!” I simply said “STOP. That is not helpful.” And came back upstairs. I don’t understand how someone could find words like those to be helpful. Saying or hearing them. Right? I wanted nothing more than to be heard, perhaps an understanding nod, or a hug. Not to be rolled over by a loud oral fart. (The word version of an anal rocket fart - endless & loud.) Communicating with humans can be so troubling, can’t it? Maybe I should have prefaced my words with “I seek a listener now.” Or I could make flip-signs with a variety of messages, like “Be a Listener!” and “Advice, please!” and “I’m about to say a funny thing,” and so on.

Yes, I do. I admire myself for finishing. Onward to editing! I won't be celebrating much then. 😬 But at least my feelings are loud and clear! #JaneAusten #PrideAndPredjudice #NoZombies #DraftOne #BackToTheBeginning #Love #LetMeTalk #Admire #DontRepress #Voices #Loud #Celebrate #ToEditing #LikeForLikes #Relieved #Happy #Endings #Exile #FarAway #Homeland #Klenard #CastingShadows #TheCircleIsBroken #ThroughTheMeadow #LBGTQ #Different #Author #BookSeries https://www.instagram.com/p/CfRla08O_ja/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Non verbal little tip
For some people a portion if their regression or age dreaming involves them going totally nonverbal. And for some people it can be very very hard to communicate when in that space. As not everyone is able to learn or remember sign
Personally I think its best if you have a tablet but you could probably get a similar app on a phone. Search "free AAC" and you'll find some things
I have an amazon fire tablet and the AAC I have is called "letmetalk" and has been extremely helpful for me and my caregiver when I shutdown and cannot speak. This happens both in big headspace and small headspace so we have a separate folder for when im regressed (pictured) this app is free and lets me customize it with icons I create.
So I took that and used photos of items i like and things i need as sometimes i regress so far i kinda cant read haha. I may take time to draw out cuter icons for the app but am not 100% sure yet

do you have a link/can you share what AAc board u use to type? hard to type for me and bad when im fully no verbal. i have a speech one but not for typing. ty!
I use LetMeTalk! I customized the entire board (basing it on the twinkl symbols app), but it took ages! It's a pretty good board tbh, and the only real issues are the fact that it has a really stilted talking voice and the fact that to write stuff with it I have to set it as a drafted email and then copy the text from that.
It's definitely the best board I've tried so far though, and I would recommend it.
Edit: I forgot to add! It does have a limit to the amount of words you can put in a sentence at any one time, but you can just copy it out every so often.
