Zenos has always been a traumatized little guy and also canonically was very interested in stories and reading, so I like to think he has a very active imagination even as a depressed adult, and recedes into his headspace when he's in those dull, empty moments where nothing feels good. I feel like the reason he was so quick to swap from calling the warrior of light things like "eikon slayer" and "champion of the savages" to "friend" despite really not knowing them outside of the battlefield at that point, was because he imagined a whole other life in his head. The little description of "whiling away the hours and friend and confidante" he brings up couldn't have come out of nowhere after all, he thought about that a lot. I think the reason he ultimately rejects it even if the warrior of light accepts him in that moment is because as much as he dreams of better things, he is the first to squash those fancies in himself. He was conditioned to believe he didn't deserve good, so he truly believed it, even when being offered something good. 🥺 He is nothing if not a sad, whimsical, deeply damaged man.

Zenos getting into any non-violent hobby and hyperfixating on it. I think at first he would be coming from a place of competition since it's all he knows: he was trained to be this way, to seek out victory over all else, so I think it would begin as like, a bit of friendly sport with the warrior of light. The warrior of light, naturally, does not take it so seriously. Maybe they picked up weaving as a way to pass the time between missions in the rising stones, or leatherworking to feel less guilty about slaying wild beasts when attacked if they can repurpose the skins, or culinary arts to recreate dishes for their friends after tasting them all around the world (or on other shards, whatever the case may be).

Whatever it is, it's something simple the warrior of light enjoys doing and they are not at all worried about being the best or most efficient at it, but seeing that familiar spark in Zenos makes them want to play it up a little and encourage him. Spinning thread for Tataru's boutique, mending adventurers' armor, cooking meals for the hungry, etc. More and more the hobby has an impact on other people too, and Zenos gradually catches on that it's not the competition that matters, but the ripple effect it has on the people around him.

Basically, wol teaching him the joys of helping others for the sake of helping others by tricking him into hyperfixating over something productive 🙌

Marika & Messmer are fascists but not the hornsent who chop people to small pieces and put them inside jars to achieve divinity because they believe they're "chosen" people and therefore superior to other races? Have you considered the possibility that sometimes both sides of a war can suck? This is why frenzied flame is the way🙏

Anon, I am going to scold you before I get to the topic because "have you considered [thing]" here should be reserved for a problem when someone is ignorant and in a bad, poor-taste way! Which I was not because obviously I "considered" this! You are referring to a silly post of me liveblogging how I got to Messmer, and so of course I addressed Messmer! I should not add long disclaimer about every other lore-relevant thing when I make a basically liveblog-ish remark to "demonstrate" that I do not let other culprits in the story "get away" either! 😣 For example recently I've been focusing on Fire Knights to express my hatred for religious purism, but later in another post about story of Abyssal Woods I've instead focused my vitriol on Hornsent Inquisitors! There is its own post and time for everything!

Okay back to the LORE with light heart now!! This is true of course that both sides are atrocious; the Hornsent basically pulled a mad cult crusade on the shamans, and very ironically long time after their folks were victims of also a religion-driven crusade! This is basically playing extermination ping-pong for generations and regardless of who "started it", none of the innocent people (children, those who disagree and simply belong to [race], distant descendants that did not DO anything etc) deserved to be exterminated by association.

To get more elaborate, one has to take into consideration just how long the conflict has been going on for, and everything else Marika has done besides the Crusade. The people being killed by Messmer's army are most likely generations apart from the people who hurt Marika's! I've mentioned that earlier where I questioned how Grandam and Hornsent (NPC) seem to not even know why Marika/Messmer went with war at them at ALL. Like, both are/were barbaric in their own way, but there's clearly a side that has suffered enough now. Like, this was such a disgusting conflict that even Marika, who was the one who had it ordered in the first place, felt the need to distance herself from it because it WAS the battle without glory or honor. There were the Hornsent, likely a cult or something, who murdered and mutilated the Shamans back in their time, but Marika was the one who started the war and kept it going even after it was clear that the Hornsent had lost, and ruined the lives of many people that weren't even part of the war in resistance like the Hornsent NPC! (One more nitpick about it is that her/Messmer's war was that of exterminating of all who have no Grace, as opposed to some insane idea on how to force them to be reborn to "join" her type of people hfhhhbhf)

Correct me here if I am wrong, but so far we can't know if ALL Hornsent accepted the practices of Bonny Village and their higher religious institution. The Greater Potentate Cookbooks that we find relating to hefty pots describe the author as having been "haunted by the grotesque practice of his village of birth". This guy didn't sound like he was very proud of what his people were doing, and it's coming from someone who was raised there! There's likely a lot of other Hornsent who found the practice just as disgusting, especially amongst those that didn't do it themselves, but we don't know that because most of them are dead and the ones who remain are understandably upset and distrustful of "our" kind!

🤔 It is also because of this why it's more reasonable to call the two leading figures of a cleansing war fascists than an entire race, because we can't just assume that ALL Hornsent are fascists just because their religious order and justice system is fucked up. We just don't have a key leader figure to redirect such sentiments towards, unlike with the Golden Order! Basically confirmed fascists are Marika, Messmer + Fire Knights + Black Knights + troops, various warriors and perfumers and what not who agreed to participate @ the Hornsent who are doing the potting, the Hornsent who did slaughter Marika's village, and remaining corrupt clerics leaders of the religion!

(On a side note, Frenzied Flame is definitely the answer but y'all shouldn't tell Melina on me hfjjchjgdh)

I have nothing to add here, all of these are rather fair points! I am a little late with adding these screenshots but you've probably seen some more speculation on the Hornsent Inquisitors these couple of days by me and @val-of-the-north in my blog! Here if you missed these: ( x ) ( x ) The gist of it is that seems like Inquisitors are hunting their fellow Hornsent as heretics for serving the "impure" nobles, but regardless of whether it happened before Marika's mentioned "betrayal" or after, it is STILL horrible to harm people for association with those that didn't even do anything wrong :^)

Still applies that calling the whole race fascist doesn't work (heck, the Hornsent who choose to stand with Midra and Nanaya are confirmation of strong exceptions!), but the sentiment is certainly very strongly rooted culturally.

Sigh.. I am pretty sure there are people somewhere in the fandom that would fall into "hornsent deserved it" pit over this, too. Like "hey, even currently Hornsent culture is a rich soil for Shaman Villages 2.0 and 3.0 and 4.0 and so on to happen, so why not preventively exterminate an inherently dangerous culture?" (..if anyone here really thinks along these lines, please know that this is a dangerous line of thinking and you'll get ideologically groomed into excusing genocides before you know if you don't question what you're implying here) What they needed was more communication with other cultures and adopting more tolerant and humane principles. Seeing that various horn-ness species are just like them rather than sitting in the "we divine they filth" bubble if it is THAT bad. Maybe Marika even HAD the power to provide such change and bridge the gap while she was still a trusted figure to them during her "infiltration", and yet instead of putting and end to terrible traditions with careful planning and diplomacy, she chose the path of revenge..

Genuinely a depressing point to think about. And yes, absolutely doesn't do her a honor to choose ruin and hate.

I also completely forgot to back it up that the fellow Hornsent were also facing execution through being stuffed in jars!

Yeah nah, definitely their people in power were so dangerous that should someone protest against the murder of Shamans and alike, they'd meet the same fate.. Having to swallow what your insane authorities do, with your own life in the line, is also something very real. This situation obscures the number of people who are against it from the superficial look.

I myself live in the country where people can't protest against the government unless they want to go to prison or face other dire consequences, so having to sit quietly for the sake of yourself and your own families for the outside world LOOKS like we don't care and ""'"agree""". :)))) Fun stuff. :') Here, anyone who would ask why Hornsent that disagree with their leaders don't express it would technically be in their right to do so, but most people will protect their own life first, especially if sacrificing it won't really avail anything. Again, Elden Ring is incredibly real with these topics. :')

Pierre can't sleep.

It's becoming a habit, which is not boding well for his stomach lining considering how much more coffee he's been drinking because of that fact. Pierre just...can't sleep. There's not much he can really attribute it to, except for maybe the fact that he's a few months out from the big debut of his whole new fashion line--the latest Louis offshoot he'd been fortunate enough to helm. This is years of his life at stake: all that school and groundwork, all the bleeding and pricking and crying he'd done to find himself here, surrounded by fabric swatches laid out haphazardly at the desk kitty-cornered in his bedroom. There are stacks of photos and torn-up magazines out on his kitchen counter. His whole apartment is now a perfect parallel to his workplace: covered in ideas, wall-to-wall.

Hm. Maybe that's why he's becoming an insomniac.

Instead of paying the thought any more attention, though, Pierre slips out of bed and pads over to his desk chair, grabs the nearest sketchbook of his and flips to a blank page. It's not quite dawn, but there's more light than there was a few hours ago--enough to see what he'd left behind.

Charles is out cold. Completely asleep, drool and all. He looks innocent in ways that no photographer would ever be able to capture: forehead smoothed out with sleep, body curled in on itself slightly in the absence of someone next to him. Pierre gazes at him, sketchbook heavy in his hands, and feels the guilt in his stomach like a knife. He'd only invited his lead model over tonight for a review of their plans for the first walk-through with the clothes. (They have to move right, after all: Pierre needs to see his work from all angles in motion before he can be comfortable putting it on stage, even for a dress rehearsal.)

He hadn't planned for two bottles of wine. He certainly hadn't planned for Charles in his lap, warm and pliant and so, so easy as Pierre had given him direction: take this off and open your mouth and hands and knees. The memory of it makes Pierre's throat tight. So good for me, he'd mumbled after, mouth pressing just under Charles' ear, and the yes sir he'd gotten back had thrown him right out of his own mind.

He grips the sketchbook tighter. There's no way this can ever happen again, he knows--once is a mistake and he'll keep it that way.

From the bed, Charles snores lightly. It's a soft sound: sweet, almost. Pierre's chest is so tight he swears he must've forgotten how to breathe.

"Oh, Charlie," he whispers to the quiet of the room, "what have I done?" Nothing good, he's certain. Pencil in hand, Pierre tries to redirect his thoughts to the work laid out on the desk behind him--dresses with angular cuts, wide-arm sleeves, the jagged lines of a belt that's been nagging at the back of his mind since he'd axed the last round of the designs from his main book.

What he ends up with is this: Charles, in charcoal, curled up in his expensive sheets. The most damning evidence of his lapse in judgment, and he can't even bring himself to rip the sketch to shreds because it feels like a waste--a waste of beauty, even if it's a beauty he can't have.

WELL, NOW, THAT WAS a rather interesting sentence. Considering his summoner had their hand in magic, dipping fingers into things he believed must be done so with careful wariness, he wouldn’t be surprised if she had indeed awoken some dangerous being before. Aside from him, of course. ❝Perhaps you should be more mindful of what you wake up, poking around in the darkness.❞ He idly drummed his fingers upon the table in front of him, his tea still steaming as he waited for it to sufficiently cool. ❝But…you do have me curious as to what the meaning of this specific phrasing is. It almost sounds as if you did something that you should not have. Tell me, then, what is it you awoke that should still be sleeping?❞ He didn’t need to know for any particular reason aside from his own curiosity.

Guess it's just..... nnnnot the worst I felt.... still alive, right....?" Right?

He laughs but it's a small patter of sound, very far away like he rest of him. He's kind of tired. But he can't sleep yet, Jonas is right here. And if he does he'll make him worry more. No--- no. He needed to.... get in his head again or--- something. Something.

"I'm okay." He adds after far too long a window. "Just a scratch. Not so bad. Just--- gimme a minute. Gotta--- gotta get my head on right."

There was a much more painful comparison to be made, but she couldn't bring herself to even think it.

🌿 ⇢ give some advice on writer's block and low creativity

I don't know if I'm the best person to ask about writer's block, since it comes and goes for me, but I find that not writing with an audience in mind helps a lot.

I was once told by a professor that when it comes to art, you should never create an artwork with the express purpose of making it to submit to an exhibition. Whatever you think they want, isn't what they really want. Then you'll have made something you don't care about, that is a "failure" in your eyes. Same can apply to fanfic and fanart. The stakes might be lower, it might look like ao3 analytics or likes on twitter or tumblr being low or non-existent, but it still hits that same spot in your heart where you think, "I did my best, I did it for you, and it wasn't good enough".

I know it's easy to say "just make what you're passionate about" because those things might be niche, or uncomfortable, or you might feel self conscious about sharing your passions, but I really find it to be the key to unlocking creativity. I hit a bit of a snag in my writing this week where I slowed down because I started feeling bad about how others might perceive it, and found inspiration again by rereading what I've already written, and was able to write 1000 more words tonight. :3 Just try to focus on what you like in it, and I swear it will make it easier to create!!

my grandmother asked me today if i could use an extra fan and actually i can because one of mine is broken so i was like yeah that would be great! so she gave me this extremely straightforward little model (you plug it in and then use a single knob to switch between off, low, medium, high) and THEN she said, hold on a minute, i'll give you the instructions manual. like girl i know how to turn a knob...this is made even worse by the fact that she had already demonstrated the operation of this fan to me the day before (which also was unnecessary because it's literally one knob) 😭💔
