The other day I was making coffee and was about to walk out the door to work and I saw my son staring intently at a book titled "Weird But True" and then looking up at me, and I walked into his room and asked him to tell me about it

(Which, to be clear, sounds so unbelievably smug and privileged, and it is, but most of what I say around here is about stuff that seems in some sense smug and privileged)

He said "oh it's just about bizarre stuff that happens, like that time this guy ate a bunch of strawberries and they turned into strawberry ice cream inside of him, and when he went to the doctor they x-rayed him and he was pink inside. They're about to study it, which is why he ate them, so they can figure out how this stuff works"

My first reaction was "huh, that would make a great meditation on the frustration of pragmatic vs. scientific investigation, the difference between introspecting (pragmatic) and confirming (scientific)"

My second reaction, within .3 seconds, was "hey wait, can I make a tumblr post about this?"

Uhhhhhhhh Sburb AU!! This was more of an excuse to classpect and make sprites, so don’t ask me questions about plot details because I put like zero thought into it. Tsumugi probably had something to do with setting up the session, and she’s hiding her real title and the fact it’s not her first session. Baby Kiibo is a robot baby because I thought that was the funniest option.

Classpect thoughts under the cut if you really want:

Immediate caveat: I mention speculative stuff here like unconfirmed active/passive class pairs and inversion theory. If you don’t like those things or otherwise disagree with the titles I gave people that’s fine but just know I’m not super interested in debating about it and won’t reply.

So, to start out with I wanted to make the 8 of them a session, so I needed no overlaps in class or aspect and one Time + one Space. I also wanted to have Kaito and Kokichi as opposing aspects. In general, I think of a Title as kind of the end of your assigned character arc, so depending on your level of maturity/introspection at the start, it can seem either really obvious or really unintuitive. I tried to base them off of the hypothetical chapter 6/survivor versions of characters, since those (plus maybe the chapter 5 deaths) of the ones that get a full arc in DR canon.

Immediately Tsumugi seemed like a deadringer for Space, not so much because of the literal physics-related stuff but because of its associations with creation/narratives and setting things up for other people to act. I made her Sylph of Space here, but that's a facade. She's actually a Muse of Space who participated in past session(s) and wants to watch how things play out.

Based on the Extended Zodiac description, Kaito or Kaede has to be time, but Kokichi CANNOT be Space by any stretch of the imagination. I made her Heir of Time with the interpretation of Heir as someone who invites change/influences of/through their aspect. Time is also associated with music and death, which is both fitting and a little mean. (I can also see Kaede as Breath outside of having to have someone be Time.)

So moving onto Kaito and Kokichi, I was considering Hope vs Rage (belief vs doubt, possibility vs restrictions), but 1) Rage is defined partially by hatred of lies despite otherwise sounding Kokichi-ish (that alone could be interesting, with the possibility of a negative/reverse title or else giving him Hope and Kaito Rage for the unexpected swerve........) 2) I really wanted to give Hope to Kiibo. So instead I went with Heart and Mind (emotion vs logic, intuition vs planning, identity/motivation vs action/decisiveness).

Kokichi is Thief of Mind for taking away other people's decisions for his own purposes but also for generally "stealing" things (e.g., the Mastermind Role, narrative importance in general, along with literal items) through his own cleverness. Vs Kaito, a Knight of Heart, who uses his constructed identity as a weapon to face challenges. I'm also a fan of inversion theory, so I think at low points they'd both trend towards Page of Heart (grows powerful late in the narrative based on his own ego/identity) and Rogue of Mind (taking choices/agency/logic away from people for their own good), respectively.

I always wanted Kiibo to be Hope since 1) Ult. Hope Robot 2) big on possibilities/faith but can be a little self-centered. I went with Bard at least partially to make a "guess we know whether he has a dick or not now!" joke, but I also think "inviting destruction through Hope, inviting destruction of (false) hope" is pretty spot on for chapter 6 Kiibo. Like, as the camera/audience surrogate, he's been forced into passively leading the others to despair, not to mention how the audience takes him over to destroy the hope of ending the show. But Kiibo ends up reversing this and helping destroy the audience's faith in Danganronpa, destroying the whole academy in accordance with the vote. (Sidenote: I wonder if Kiibo gets taken over by Horrorterrors and goes grimdark? Or if he's just really, really susceptible to orders from his Exile)

Shuichi, Page of Void, was another one that immediately came to mind. Like, "starts off weak but becomes really strong/important by the end" is Shuichi's thing! Also, counterpart to Kaito's Knight. And Void is all about secrets, mystery, etc. From the Extended Zodiac: "Where others might be compelled to go out and seek answers, the Void-bound lean more toward casting doubt on what is already considered understood. They don't take much on faith and would rather live in a state of confusion- than believe something that might be untrue or bow to intellectual authority... At their best, Void-bound are wise, intuitive, and vibrant. At their worst, they can be dismissive, indecisive and apathetic." 

I had considering Light, for seeking out knowledge/truth, but Shuichi's character arc ends on "fuck you, I refuse to play. You all get nothing more from us" and learning to live with ambiguity, so I think he's way more Void. But, again, inversion would be Thief of Light, so selfishly taking away knowledge/importance from others.

Speaking of Light, I made Miu Mage of Light. Mage is like, active Seer, seeking out knowledge for yourself (vs advising others) and Light is luck, knowledge, and also importance/plot relevance. As an inventor, Miu keeps innovating and figuring things out, plus she's very motivated by her own importance to the world. She wants to be seen more than anything else and loves being smarter than those around her. Also: "At their best, the Light-bound are resourceful and driven. At their worst they can be fussy, pedantic, and insensitive." Inversion is Heir of Void, so "inviting change via hiding things" or "changing what's kept secret", which suits Miu when plotting murder.

Finally, Maki is Prince of Blood. Blood is trust, bonds, relationships, stubbornness, duty, obligation (vs freedom, change, choices) so "someone who breaks bonds/destroys relationships" but also "someone who destroys using/motivated by duty/relationships". Like, Maki is inherently a fracture point in the group because of her talent and then directly breaks the group apart and sabotages her relationships with the others in chapter 5, but also she's deeply motivated by her bonds to others in all of her destructive actions (protectiveness for orphanage/friend, love for Kaito). This sound super negative, but I think this is also the Maki who commits to destroying the institution of Danganronpa in chapter 6. Sometimes you have to be decisive and cut bad relationships out of your life.

Inversion would be Sylph of Breath, so "healing via change" or "encouraging growth towards freedom", which you can argue is sort of the way Kaito wants her to go? But she just doesn't. Idk, for better or worse, I think Maki is very aware of who she is and how people related to her, so even at her worst she's true to herself, vs, say, Kaito or Kokichi, who act "ooc".

In chapter 52, when Yashiro calls out Doumeki's name. He says "Chi.... Dou...me...ki". I am freaking out because was he gonna call out doumeki by his first name "Chikara" ???

In the japanese raws, is it clear which first syllable he said first ? Thank you !

I would love to think that because just moments ago he was thinking about Doumeki and the host club mama and how she called him "Chikara" in front of everyone. I'm sure that if Yashiro had gone ahead and said "Chikara" in this moment, with that face, then the chapter would be over, the series would be over, and we would be over, because Doumeki wouldn't allow us to see what was going to happen next because the man he loves just outright called out his name.

To be realistic it was probably just a little moan because Doumeki was being a little excessive with his fingers and Yashiro (as we now know from the new chapter (SPOILER) would love for Doumeki to be a lot more G__TLE right about now.

Quite possibly, Yashiro could also have been about to say "chigau" because Doumeki had asked him if he really wanted him to stop to which Yashiro would have not necessarily said "No" but that he just wanted to do it differently. But in the absence of some Yashiro introspection (not exactly a good time for it, but heck he's done it before) we went with the simple "chi" because it works as a moan and Doumeki's name and who are we to force ourselves on Yashiro? That's Doumeki's job!

But to be accurate, Yashiro does say "Chi" in hiragana, because Chikara is one kanji so it would have to be broken up using hiragana. The Japanese raw has Yashiro actually saying "....Dou me ki" in hiragana as well, so yeah.... it could be possible that Yashiro was about to get intimate and destroy us all. Boy did we dodge a bullet!!

Rei perception of Ni-ki: She sees him as someone that is very mysterious and dark. I think thats her first impression of him. I think it is his features that makes her think that way.With the hanged man card , to her he seems very in his own world and quiet. Almost introspecting. With the 7 of cups she also think he is someone that is distant or have contemplative gaze. He appears slightly unfocused or detached, as if he is lost in thought.

Ni-ki's perception Of Rei: He thinks she is someone that is dainty and careful. In terms of her mannerisms probably. Very elegant like. With the knight of cups he probably sees her as someone attractive and charming. With the hierophant reversed card something about her feels very overly traditional. Maybe its because she is japanese and he is japanese so he kinda know how rigid and by the book japanese people may seem.

Overall king of wands:they both think of each other as charismatic, and posesses creative energy. Maybe bcs they are both artist to yeah thats how they view each other. They both think of each other as confident. I dont think there is any romantic feelings here. More of an artist that view another artist.

Mitsuki lay on his side in bed, idly swiping through his phone. The only light left on in the room was the small square being projected onto his weary face. Mitsuki should be sleeping at this hour but he couldn’t bring himself to settle, allowing the soft music pouring from the speaker to create a more melancholic atmosphere than the day deserved.

Mitsuki was glad to be getting so much MC work lately. Really, he was.  

It was just difficult to set aside the fact that their fans thought he talked too much, knowing that Mitsuki had only made it onto i7 as part of a package deal. 

But Mitsuki knew better to dwell on that, so he swiped.

Mitsuki lingered on this slide long enough for the music in the background to loop, then he laughed quietly.  

How odd was it to go seeking a distraction and stumble across a mirror, instead?

Mitsuki held the moderation Yamato had given him close to his heart, but this- this desperation to keep a white-knuckled grip on the things he held dear- was something written into the very marrow of Mitsuki’s bones. 

It was what kept him signing up for auditions- always reaching, even if it meant his hand might be slapped mercilessly away, again and again. It’s what kept him up at night when he ached from the brutal sting of rejection. It’s what had spurred Iori to glue them together in the first place, if only to spare Mitsuki the pain. 

Gratitude and insecurity were glued in equal measure to that memory, but now that they were here Mitsuki knew he would never let go of i7 without engraving his desperate desire for their success beneath his fingernails, first. 

The thought of ever being dragged away from the group was an uneasy one, though, so Mitsuki swiped again.  

Achilles did not slur my name, as people often did, running it together as if in a hurry to be rid of it. Instead, he rang each syllable:

Again, Mitsuki paused. An image of Nagi’s shining face poked its way into his thoughts, unbidden, whining for Mitsuki to watch Magical Cocona with him. 

Mit-su-ki, Nagi always said. Drawing the syllables out so the shape of Mitsuki’s name lingered on his lips. 

Thoughtful, Mitsuki raised a finger to his own lips and pressed down. 

Mitsuki was used to people wanting to be rid of him. Used to people batting away his outstretched hand in search of something more. Something better. 

No one had ever lingered on Mitsuki, before. 

The thought brought warmth to Mitsuki’s face and he slammed his phone down on the bed, throwing his room into a sudden, searing darkness.

Mitsuki’s heart pounded against his chest- a wild, fluttering thing- and he felt stripped bare, his racing thoughts thrown into sharp relief without the soft haze of the phone screen to blur them.

It was so warm, all of a sudden.  

Had someone messed with the thermostat? 

Surely that’s all it was, and not…

Mitsuki carefully grasped his phone, tilting the screen back towards himself. 

he rang each syllable, it said. Pa-tro-clus. 

A nervous smile tugged at Mitsuki’s burning cheeks, a gentle weightlessness skittering through his stomach. 

Mit-su-ki, Nagi always said. 

Mit-su-ki. 

Surely Nagi knew the emphasis didn’t belong in the middle of his name, and yet…

And yet, he rang each syllable. 

Mitsuki pressed his face into his pillow, carefully cradling the belltower resonance that had been struck each time his name was spoken with such care, building and building and building until the brass echo brought blood rushing to the surface of Mitsuki’s smile.

Mit-su-ki, Nagi always said- sparkling and golden and princelike. 

“Nagi Rokuya,” Mitsuki whispered into his pillow. “Na-gi.”

The music on Mitsuki’s phone looped gently again. 

Mitsuki carefully rang each syllable.

“Ro-ku-ya.”

Delighted laughter bubbled past his lips, swallowed by the walls keeping watch over Mitsuki's feelings. 

Maybe…maybe that’s what Iori had meant the other day. When Mitsuki was sitting on the couch with Nagi, watching the man far more than the anime, and he’d placed a hand on Mitsuki’s shoulder, leaning down to whisper, It’s okay, onii-san. 

Maybe it would be, Mitsuki thought. 

Maybe Nagi Rokuya was another one of those things Mitsuki wouldn’t let go of without a fight.

A death rite in Haitian Vodou

Here is a rare look at the publicly viewable portion of desounay/desounen, which is the first rite after a houngan, manbo, or other vodouizan passes. Unfortunately, this was a rite done on behalf of the death of a very well known and well respected houngan in Jacmel, Haiti who died unexpectedly this morning. This is difficult to watch, with lots of crying and expressions of grief.

The video begins with the procession, which has likely started at the home of the houngan (Woodson Antoine, ki di Gwètòde Plenipontansyè), where he passed, and is leading into the temple where Houngan Sonson was initiated. The procession ends as the rest of the desounay is completed behind closed doors. After, folks who have arrived gather to hear Houngan Woodson's papa kanzo speak, and then the videographer shares the news that Houngan Woodson has passed and shares what details were available; that he has been in ceremony just hours earlier with many of the people present, had not been well and had many health issues, had been encouraged to go to the hospital, and then went home, where he passed due to breathing difficulties. By the time an ambulance was found, he had already gone. The videographer compares desounay to the Catholic rite of extreme unction, which is aimed at allowing someone sick to pass to eternity with the blessings of their God and forgiven of their sins. Desounay is a little different than that, as it is only completed after death.

The desounay is completed as soon as possible after death is realized; this is the first ceremony that begins to separate our various soul pieces to go where they must so that we, our lwa, and our descendants can have peace after we pass. It is preferable that this ceremony is done before the body is taken from the home to the morgue or funeral home. In this case, you can see how quickly it was put together; it is happening very early in the morning, pre-9AM, and folks have clearly come directly from ceremony or their homes in a rush, you can see that they have put their white clothes on over other clothes or black and purple clothes from the Gede ceremonies they were attending. This has happened so quickly that there has not been time to prepare the temple or really even the community; Houngan Woodson was extremely well known in Jacmel and in Haiti at large due to his position as gwètò and not everyone was able to come in the moment to share in the grief. His bowoum and traditional internment will undoubtedly be huge.

This is a huge loss. While Haitian Vodou professes no central authority figure(s), a gwètò is a sort of regional coordinator that takes on the responsibility of watching over the community/communities in his or her region. A gwètò might mediate disputes, help a new temple start up, and represent the region throughout the country. Houngan Woodson took his position seriously and attended just about every ceremony in the area, even if he could only go for awhile. I personally benefitted from his intercession when there were local issues my husband needed help with, and I knew Houngan Woodson to be a kind, thoughtful, and caring individual who was always pleased to see me and hear how I was.

This has been a very introspective Gede season for me; Gede has had me sitting and reflecting on things that I will write about soon. What I have thought about today in thinking about this particular death is that access to healthcare is a liberation issue. While only Bondye knows our time and we ask to only be taken at our right time, had Haiti had more equitable access to both emergency medical care in that someone could have called for help and Houngan Woodson could have gone to a hospital that was staffed and had medical equipment, and regular healthcare that could have provided ongoing support for his medical issues as we know in many other parts of the world, perhaps his death could have been avoided. If liberation was fully realized in Haiti, deaths from things we take for granted as minor annoyances, like asthma, strep throat, high blood sugar, and similar, would be a thing of the past.

[ … where should slavko begin? if the devil were half as handsome as you? the confession that she was trying to keep him here for the night? the kiss (along with some particularly delightful sounding serbian–he loves the way anica’s mouth forms all its words, but hearing his own tongue does strike something in slavko’s chest)? oh, sure, it was on the cheek, but with the way slavko’s mouth falls open a bit, you’d be mistaken for thinking it was on the mouth. and she flits away before he has a moment to act, the way a moth taps a lantern in the darkness. it seems that her eyes even sparkle the way a moth’s wings do when illuminated beneath the glow, with that same golden sheen and all, and slavko can only blink dumbly after her. even his hands do nothing but hang there in the air, empty, after anica takes the wood from him. he’s not broken, but you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise! ]

I… yes. It. It will. Deliver a message. Yes. [ a hard swallow. he purses his lips, breathes in deep with a puff of his chest, and puts his hands on his hips. there’s a sharp nod as slavko’s faculties come back to him. ] Three, four… no matter! You’ll have them. Anything you want. [ and he won’t get them to her if he just keeps standing there! so, he moves for the next log, albeit slowly, almost mechanically. his brain is really trying to catch up with all of that. he sets the log on the stump and readies himself to strike. ]

[ he’s thinking of the way her rich, dark hair wrapped neatly around her fingers in gentle curls and then fell to her shoulders, fluid like water. and he’s thinking about how those nimble fingers might dance over the tense of his shoulders later–did she mean that? is he allowed to let his mind dwell on that for a moment? can his thoughts take refuge there while his axe falls on the wood? they do: his thoughts dash to the spaces between anica’s fingers, and he wishes he weren’t holding the axe. it falls on the log which bursts into two uneven halves. this job isn’t as pretty as the first. ]

[ he grabs for another log, setting it up. his thoughts run onwards, onwards, right into a wall. the temptation to have you here, if only for the night. no, even his thoughts aren’t brave enough to venture down the hallway and open up all the possible doors to that statement. but does he need to? the hand of slavko’s thoughts hovers above the first knob, the simplest one, and turns it. he thinks of the logs at his feet being licked by ravenous tongues of fire, and he thinks of himself sat before that fire, basking in its warmth, anica at his side. can he move her to his lap? is he allowed to do that in his thoughts? the axe rises and falls and one log becomes two. again, the two logs are not created equal. ]

Last one, ah? [ he gropes for the final log, but this time, his thoughts stay put. they don’t dash off to anica’s side, but they run laps around his cheek, where she’d kissed him. oh, if he had turned his head just right at that moment, he could have caught her! not for long, but long enough that some of the runaway thoughts in his head would have had a home in reality. if only, if only, if only! he sets up the log and the axe falls with barely a passing grade. slavko notices, frowns, and wipes his forehead with the back of his hand. if he didn’t know better, he’d swear that anica had bewitched him. he props the axe up against the stump and turns to face her with a sigh. ]

Well. I’d say this lot has received my message, wouldn’t you? Come, let’s gather these devils up. You’ve promised me a coffee and I would like it hot enough to remind my extremities that they’ve something to live for. [ you. they have you to live for. he can’t say it. why can’t he say it? slavko works on gathering the wood. ] A. A moment longer and I think my fingers would have frozen to that axe…

[ /anica’s words fail her, ever so briefly, and she can only nod along to slavko for a minute. holding the logs to her chest, she watches him intently once again; the tension in his brow, those beads of sweat, and then watches the axe fall. again. she reads the silence as concentration, the uneven split as an effort to be done with this quickly; something she appreciated! she had enough of the cold! she would much rather be inside, and for him to join her. again, she eagerly nods. ]

Hm! Yes, yes, that will do just fine- very good! They received it loud and clear, and we will put them to good use! Right away! I will get to work on that coffee... would an Italian pour-over be alright? One day I would love... hah, I would love to offer espresso, but ah, [ /perish the thought! think of what that would do to your heart - hurried and excited enough as is! while he would surely stop her from crashing to the floorboards, let’s not test that theory tonight. the lack of proper equipment, for now, is a blessing. ] yes, one day. But for now, 

[ /scrambling in collecting her fair share of split logs under one arm, she fumbles about in her jacket pocket for the backdoor key. she swiftly jumps up that tiny flight of stairs to the door and unlocks it, leading with a foot angled to stop a certain feline from escaping. iulia, however, doesn’t move from her perch on the windowsill - where she had watched the entire fiasco unfold - and only slowly blinks to break the odd-eyed stare at her owner. the tip of her white, wispy tail waved back and forth in thought. she doesn’t so much as flinch when anica shouts over her shoulder, turns on the kitchen light. that soft, warm glow pierced through the arrival of fog outside. ] If you could take them through to the living room, there should be kindling and coal in the buckets already! My lighter is on the mantle, yes? [ /she couldn’t make the venture over her threshold more enticing if she tried. with a final flash of her smile, she kicked off her shoes and walked her own haul through the tiny library, into the living room, turning on a walkway of pendant lights as she did. she was right: everything was in its place, waiting. the fireplace only needed a few split logs, in fact, so she shimmies a couple from under her arm, and stacks the rest in a re-purposed delivery box to the side.

for a moment, she needs to brace herself against the cold tile of the fireplace, and take a deep breath. a hand holds her head, and rubs tentatively at her temples. another breath. get it together, come on. why is this difficult? why now? the answer is obvious, and anica can try to play ignorant, but that pit in her stomach had opened up again. she swallows. it was stage fright, but a thousand, a million times worse... you can mess up your lines even on opening night, and walk it off like nothing went wrong. but everything could go wrong here and could be left beyond repair. are you sure about this? more than anything? 

anica slowly rose to stand, crossed herself twice over, and walks back to the kitchen for- wait. wait. where is it? ] Iuli, what did you do- [ /the tap of claws against glass tells her where lost could be found: a tiny amber bottle being batted about by iulia. it smelt grassy, clung to the bottle when swirled about. anica had already drunk half of it, and had been told by her consulting witch to save the other half for... no. anica whispered: ] I have to do this the right way... right, darling? Hah. What an awful idea. What would he think, hm? Maybe it will be enough for me alone to drink this love potion... you would think, yes? Besides, it is hardly a taste I would want to subject-- [ /iulia, of course, says nothing, lazily chasing after the bottle with a swatting paw, barely moving from her seat. ] Ah! Nu! You give me enough fishy kissies! We will get rid of this, then! What did we say about witchcraft in this house, hm? [ /nothing! there’s no rule in this house against witchcraft (when anica is the one doing it), but there it went; down the kitchen sink. her heart sinks with it - whatever magic or courage otherwise sourced in that bottle was gone, and her thoughts are free to run amok. they get loud, only muffled briefly by the boiling kettle. focus. 

she finds two suitable mugs, a filter for the coffee pot and her current jar of grounds; a fine, rich dark roast. a deep breath, and she drops the empty bottle in the bin, and hears iulia grumble. anica needs to shout again over the noise of the kettle: ] Remind me how you take your coffee, Slava?

Teens:

Link- expected king, got poet. Being the only one of the teens who’s experienced romantic love in a profound and personal way, and the only one who’s felt paternal love in that same degree, he didn’t like the quiz much at all. It made him sad, remembering his lost loves. He misses his Kris, he misses his kids. It’s not fair to him, to have to go through such loss and gain nothing from it. It’s not fair to them, either, to hold such life and beauty that can all be boiled down to a corrupted binary code. He has no home left to go to. Without any sort of closure, he’s left desperately trying to recreate the life he had made, while knowing how horribly impossible it will be.

Scary- soldier. Almost expected king; she teetered between the answers she *really* felt and the answers she thought were ‘coolest’ on more than one question; however, she ended up staying true to herself until the end of the quiz at least. Of course, she angled the phone to make sure none of the others could see her answers. She doesn’t usually like this type of introspection; thinking about herself truthfully for too long hurts too much. She’s created a version of herself made to fight, resist, create disorder. What happens when she knows she’s tired of this? What does she do when she needs to put down the sword, purge herself of the poison, but there’s no one left to catch her?

Normal- king. He wasn’t really sure what he’d expect; he’s too viscerally aware of every part of his being (disappointing, weird, sad, anxious, annoying) so he doesn’t like taking quizzes like this. Much preferring the anonymity and normalcy he can gain from pretending to be something else, he’ll try and try and try to fit himself into molds of what other people need, and he’ll fall short every time. He feels this failure so incredibly deeply in his bones; a pain he was only dully aware of until only a few months ago.

Taylor-soldier. It was a close tie though, almost a king. He keeps hearing the phrase ‘main character syndrome’ thrown around. He reads his result; they don’t sound correct. He reads Normal’s result, Link’s result; none of them fit him. He’s worried for his friends, his side kicks. He knows his place in this world, he knows what he wants to achieve and he knows he can get it- and not just because of his famous mom and Hell connections, but because he’s confident in his abilities. He knows what he’s capable of, and he knows how to bounce back from things he might not succeed at the first time. What he doesn’t know, however, is how to help his friends find the same duty and pace within themselves. How to help them come to terms with losses and wins and fears much greater than anything he’s ever had to know.

Ough good question… but I don't think I have any fun answers for any of my current fics. I wish I were clever enough to insert easter eggs into my writing, but my brain partitions fandom content into specific little boxes that don’t have much interaction between each other

I DO have one Liufang fic that will probably remain unpublished where Sun Jing and Qiu Tong from Tamen de Gushi (她们的故事) have cameos as Bai Zhan and Qian Cao disciples! 

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

This is going to sound very funny, but. I have gotten better about sharing my writing lol. Not at autorial things that actually matter, like pacing, or analysis, or rising falling action whatever! I have gotten better at sharing my writing :) 

I write a LOT and I share very little. Mostly because I write solely for an audience of one (1) (me). Most of what I’ve written has never been read by anyone besides me, and probably won’t ever have any kind of audience except for me. And I’m totally okay with that!

The more I feel like I need to make my own food, the more I tend to write (by god ES21 i am looking at you with wet and pathetic eyes…) and I only publish if I feel like i have something good to contribute. I suffer from an overbearing need for perfection (self-perceived) so if it doesn’t pass my own vibe check/exactingly high standards, I won’t publish it. This means that there are tons of shorter minifics, character interactions, drabbles, AUs etc that simply languish in my docs bc I guess my internal metric for ‘contributes to fandom’ is longfic. I got a little better at sharing my writing with Moshang, mostly because I liked what I had written so much and at the time, it didn’t feel like anyone had done exactly what I wanted to see. Haha perhaps it was only my ego that got bigger, and not my writing skills? :')

ANYWAYS. I would like to try and use my brain more when engaging with things and creating instead of just devouring something and then smashing whatever is in my brains directly onto a doc and being like OOOO WOW!!!! COOL FIC!! I LOVE IT!! MWAH (all themes, motifs, and analysis fly directly over my head and escape like a flock of birds) but also my brainspace is so small and crammed so full of whatever the OTP of the era is that it’s quite difficult for me :’)

I write almost exclusively on my phone lmao. Lying in bed in the dark, on my phone, on gdocs! 

I edit exclusively on the computer, so any writing that needs to be added at this stage is on the laptop. This is the most grueling part of writing for me and makes me gnash my teeth so much. Editing is so hard and so time consuming and spurs the perfectionist in me like someone kicking a horse into gallop lmao.  

If i didn't write on my phone, i wouldn’t get any writing done, I think. This is also part of why chapter updates take so long. Always bottlenecked at the editing point!
