That voice... So familiar, yet unknown at the same time. As though he heard it in another time, another place, months or years away from where was now. 

“That’s right, great job! Keep breathing for me. Try to wiggle your toes.” 

He couldn’t open his eyes, couldn’t open his mouth. But he could wiggle his toes. 

“Thank you. Now... Do you know where you are?” 

Somewhere. Somewhere he couldn’t reach his friends, somehow he could only breathe and listen and want. 

“More or less, yeah. You and I... We’re the same. We share a power. We did the same thing.” 

Did the same thing...? 

He recalled floating... Feeling a surge of power, using his love for his friends to seal a great power away. He had become one with that power. 

“Yes, that’s right. We both did that. And now we’re both here. But this place only needs one of us. I think it’s going to use half of each of us.” 

Half of each? What, would he wake up half-dead in a hospital surrounded by his friends? 

“Maybe. We won’t know until it happens, but isn’t that the same with everything? We won’t know until it happens.” 

Yes, he supposed the voice was right. Neither of them would know until it happened. 

“We have names, you know. I’m surprised you don’t remember mine.” 

Remember? He didn’t remember much of anything. He remembered hearing his friends’ voices, SEES and otherwise, and he remembered a rush of warmth. 

He remembered falling asleep on the rooftop, surrounded by everyone. 

He couldn’t recall their names, but he rememberes their faces. There were two in particular that stood out to him in his memory. 

“So you do remember. That’s good. It’s good that you remember there was someone else.” 

Someone else? Who would that have been...? 

Kotone. 

“Yep! Hi, Makoto. Took you long enough,” Kotone’s voice said cheerfully. 

Makoto. That was his name. His name was Makoto Arisato, and he had a twin sister named Kotone Arisato. They had sacrificed themselves at The Fall to save their friends. 

And they were dead. 

“No, we aren’t dead. Just... Not quite alive. An in-between of sorts. We should wake up any minute now.” 

... 

Makoto took a breath. A real, genuine breath. His body felt heavy, like he had just gotten out of a pool after floating in it for hours. Something inside him felt... Loose, like a too-big sweater. 

It wasn’t uncomfortable, by any means. It almost felt better than the constant tightness in his chest that he had felt for almost the entirety of his time at SEES. 

He opened his eyes slowly. He was in a hospital room, and there were people beside him, all around him. There was someone in a bed next to him, too. A girl with auburn hair. 

Kotone. 

“...Makoto...?” 

Kotone sat up. The boy beside her did as well. All around them, the people at their bedsides were frozen. A few were crying. 

The boy beside her blinked, then fixed his gaze on her. Makoto. Her brother. 

“Are we... Are we alive? Are we okay?” He asked.

She nodded. “We’re okay, Makoto. We’re okay.” 

She looked around her. She recognised everyone, every face crying and staring. Yukari. Junpei. Aigis. Koromaru. Ken. 

No Shinjiro. 

“Hey, everyone. Miss us...?” She tried. Junpei and Aigis were on her in a second, hugging her (and in Aigis’s case, pressing a kiss to her cheek). 

“We missed you all,” Makoto said from underneath Ken and Yukari’s bodies. 

“You two are terrible! Worrying us like that, falling into comas until goddamned October-” Yukari sobbed. 

“October...? How far into October-?” Kotone asked. Ken went still in Makoto’s arms.

“The fourth, as of today,” Yukari responded. Her voice shook, and Koromaru nuzzled her leg. 

Suddenly, Akihiko came barreling into the room, eyes wide. 

“Guys! Come quick, Shinji’s woken-” 

His gaze landed on the twins, and he froze. 

“...Holy shit. It’s October the fucking fourth, and everyone is awake,” he whispered, eyes shining. 

“Senpai- Did you say Shinjiro-senpai is awake too?” Junpei asked incredulously. Akihiko nodded slowly, never once taking his eyes off of the twins. Makoto shot him a grin, and Kotone waved. 

What an odd day.

On October 4th of 2009, a man fell into a deep slumber after being shot twice in the left shoulder in the alley behind Port Island Station. On March 5th of 2010, two siblings, a boy and a girl, fell into twin comas on the roof of Iwatodai High School surrounded by their friends. 

All three were predicted to never wake up again. Yet here they were, in separate rooms but awake at the same time. 

The event had doctors in the Tatsumi Memorial Hospital scratching their heads for weeks, desperately trying to find any sort of explaination for the strange and sudden bought of wakefulness of their patients. 

They moved Shinjiro Aragaki to the same ward as the Arisato twins, and assigned the same doctor to all of them. After all, the three of them were under similar circumstances as each other, and were likely to need similar treatments. 

Kotone was starting to grow restless in her bed, constantly shifting and squirming and asking for different things to keep her occupied. It reminded Shinji of Aki, with his constant bouncing around and desire to do and act and go. 

Makoto seemed content to read and listen to music and sleep. Even though the guy had been asleep for months, he didn’t seem satisfied with the amount of sleep he was getting. 

Or maybe there was just nothing else to do. Shinji could understand that. 

On October 10th, the three of them were discharged. The Arisato twins moved back into Iwatodai’s dorms, and Shinji moved in with Aki while he retook his third year. 

Somehow, the world had gone from ending, and three good friends being on the cusp of death, to everything thriving again. 

Somehow, everything had shifted back to a way similar to how it used to be. 

Shinji still cooked for everyone. The Arisatos still did everything together, now accompanied by Aigis. 

A year ago, Shinji had been dying in the same place he had killed someone. He had said his death was supposed to happen. 

It was how things were supposed to be. 

But now, surrounded by warmth and love in light of a new, Nyx-less life... 

Shinjiro couldn’t have been more wrong.

today's scam: Aha water (again)

Was walking down pink street when I got stopped by a barker who promised that all my problems could be solved..., long story short, anyone remember Aha water from the 80s? Well, they rebranded as AHA water (subtle, I know) and they''re back at it. I stalked the people who make it and they literally collected puddle water from the champion district to put in the concoction. I didn't really feel well after drinking it, but the overall experience was good because they totally tapped into that nostalgia. Overall a really solid scam. Stay safe out there kamurocho.

In a week or so it'll be the 3 year anniversary that FINAL was released outside of Japan. I still remember the watch party I went to and how we all wowed at parts online. How we were--as a collective-- weirded out by the CGI Rei sequence. Which will always be one of the film's highlights for me. How striking the divine geometries were.

The Kaworu and Gendo parallels despite them being on opposite ends of the communicative spectrum.

How the former uses music as a means of communication and the latter uses music as a replacement for people. How Kaworu's distance from people didn't stop him from trying to communicate and how Gendo's relationship with people was used to justify his distance. How Shinji's 'You're like my father' is subverted in intention this time around. The OG series variation is uttered when Shinji finds out Kaworu is an angel, is forced to realize his desire to destroy angels comes from false, honeyed words and recoils from this revelation by likening Kaworu to his father. The latter comes from when Shinji finally understands the both of them, how music makes them happy for different reasons.

I still remember giving my thoughts on the movie to others. How my inbox was not too long after inundated. I didn't feel like an authority figure, but rather someone putting their thoughts down on a moving metatextual film. I guess it resonated with a lot of people.

I still remember how FINAL recontextualized certain things. How it addressed personal grievances of mine in why Rebuild Eva seemed 'tame' compared to Eva. How the horrors feel more implicit and seemingly less unsettling. The horror of Rebuild Eva's predecessor isn't just the contempt of man, but how this manifests and how often this type of injustice goes unanswered. How life tells you that all your enemies, your adversaries will eventually suffer comeuppances. But this is hardly the case. It just keeps happening. You will often loudly weep to a world that willingly cuts off its ears.

The Rebuilds, however are a more environment horror. When it comes to the environment's deterioration, we're frogs in a boiling pot. We don't realize how a place of stagnation causes us the very same. When the horrors have a face, we identify them quickly.

I still remember the bevvy of cycle theories floating all throughout years prior to FINAL's release. How Kaworu's reveal of a cyclical narrative and being stuck confirmed this. Eva has always been a story of repetition. A story of detrimental cycles. The power and understated importance of breaking them. How paradoxical free will is, that one may use it to give or take others' free will. How Eva staunchly tells the viewer of the latter.

Almost 3 years ago is when Eva FINAL tied all these concepts so nicely together. 3 years ago I still believe in and practice empathy in any way I can. I hope that you are doing the same too. I hope that someone else's kindness betters your world.

And I hope that others' kindness may one day better mine.

Sex and sexuality is a prevalent theme in NGE, and especially in EoE. What are your thoughts about this?

I've been sitting on this one (and therefore the other asks in my inbox because I like to do them in order) for a few days to see if I could come up with a nice, coherent answer, but, as always, I can't so I must ramble instead.

One of the things I appreciate about the way sex/ sexuality is addressed in NGE/EoE is how messily and amorally it is portrayed, because I feel like that's very realistic. Clearly, it is important to apply morality to sex in practice (like, getting consent, respecting the sexual boundaries of your relationship(s), etc), but internally it's all a sloppy grey area, and sometimes people are going to do questionable things in moments of weakness (ex. try to hook up with an ex's bff who you don't even get along with because you're drunk and still upset about the breakup). And we see that a lot in Evangelion, as well as the characters' conflicting feelings about it.

For instance, Misato. Do I actually think she was attracted to Shinji? No. I think she cared about him very much as a guardian, but when she didn't know how to comfort him/ encourage him, she turned to offering sex. I read someone saying that she sees sex as a source of comfort due to sleeping with Kaji as a way to get over her father's death, which could be true, but I'm not sure that seems quite right to me. I believe she uses it as a tool in some ways. As an escape in others. And as a way to manufacture emotional connectedness in other instances. Sometimes all at once. And we see that she feels conflicted about it as well, because she's not sure if she loves Kaji or is using him. Then, Queen Daddy issues saw her ward in a bad spot and, with everything going to shit around them, she tries to use sex as a tool to motivate Shinji and also show him that she cares about him (even though it was so incredibly inappropriate 😭). Anyway, for Misato, sex is the cure to the hedgehog's dilemma, I suppose!

And then there's Shinji. The only time he seems able to make any kind of advance towards Asuka is when she is asleep, which I do not think is a sign that he is a predator but more an indicator of how deeply pervasive his inability to open himself up to other people is. It is *symbolic*. It's not okay what he did, but I think we are supposed to see it as a symptom of his own self loathing, and that he wants to reach out and touch people but is too afraid to make the move when they are able to perceive him doing it. Shinji masturbating to Asuka's exposed body at the hospital was obviously wrong, but it also seems like the summary of his relationship with her and the version of himself that exists through her. I'm trying to think how to describe it. i've written and deleted so many things. I don't know. Ugh. When she cannot see him, he can finally reveal how desperate he is for her to be with him. She is the one he seeks out when everything goes to shit, although if she were awake, I don't think he could have been so honest about how much he needed her. But she's in a coma so he is free to beg her to wake up, then, when her robe falls open... you know. It's like he's carrying out his half of a relationship in a bubble, without every offering her the chance to join him. And he hates himself for it, just like he hates himself for what he did in her hospital room. He knows masturbating to her unconscious body was wrong. He knows she is more than just jackoff fuel. He know she deserves to actually be held and loved. But he is immobilized by his fear of rejection and how others see him (and also so unbelievably horny because he's a teenage boy). The kiss between him and Asuka is really unfortunate because if either of them had just given the other any kind of indication that it was special to them in any way, I think things would have gone a lot differently. Shinji believes Asuka was just doing it because she was bored and mad about Kaji being out with Misato (right? Am I remembering the circumstances right?), and then, because Shinji just stood there, Asuka believes that Shinji only let her kiss him because she grabbed his nose and forced him, and not because of any affection for her. They were both too afraid to be honest. Maybe if Asuka had been more patient, Shinji would have closed the space and kissed her. Maybe if Shinji had held her, she wouldn't have run away after, screaming about it being a mistake. Maybe it wouldn't have gotten to the point where the hospital scene played out the way it did.

Which brings me to Asuka, who is the last one I will talk about because I think these three are the ones with the more convoluted attitudes towards sex and also this is already getting long. I think Asuka was really profoundly affected by her father finding and hooking up with another woman while her mother was ill (her mother's doctor, no less). I think it gave her the belief that a woman who is able to provide sex is a woman who will receive loyalty and love. She throws herself at Kaji, an adult who she feels safe with and wants the approval of, because, to her, that is the way to secure his affection. When we first meet her, she shows off how big her boobs got. Could that not be her way of announcing that she is lovable? But Kar, you might say, she freaks out about boys looking at her panties and things. To which I say: Yeah. She's 14. She's putting on a show, just like in everything else she does, trying to prove to everyone that she is worthwhile. Look how artlessly she comes on to both Shinji and Kaji. She wants to be seen as sexy and desirable because to her that's a means to an end, which is making sure people have a reason to want her around and notice her. What she really wants to be cherished. If Shinji had been able to show her that he reciprocated her interest/attraction, then I think there would have been a natural progression in their physical relationship. In closing, Asuka exists in a perpetual state of conflict because she demands love in whatever way she thinks the can obtain it, but she does not actually know what the love she needs looks like. I think if someone simply hugged her and stroked her hair and told her how brave she's been, she would sob for a day and a night.

Whew. And, of course, my thoughts might change after I finish my rewatch and eventually get my hands on the rebuild movies and rewatch in the future, but that's where I am on the subject right now. And I didn't even address Shinji and Kaworu. But, I think that whole thing is pretty straightforward. Kaworu pretty much ignores all of Shinji's reservations and showers him in praise and affection and Shinji goes all heart eyes because it's the first time he's felt wanted and he's bi.

Ken sits at the table, wolfing down his breakfast of pancakes and bacon. “Tatsumi Port,” he says again with more clarity. “Me n’ Goro both. School trip thing.”

Aki and Shinji exchange a look, and Goro sighs. “I feel like I missed out on so much... But at least Ken can be like a tour guide. You’d better tell me everything, Ken.”

“Oh! If you tour Gekkoukan, say hi to Fushimi-chan for me,” Aki says before taking a sip of his coffee.

Ken chugs the last of his chocolate milk, and rolls his eyes with a grin on his face. “Dad, I doubt we’ll be touring the high school.”

Goro coughs into his hand, a sly expression on his face. “Technically, we aren’t supposed to be going at all. Rise-san pulled some strings to allow us there. It’s only for second-years.”

Shinji sighs, feeling a smile tug at his lips. “Aki, how do we keep getting involved with powerful people?”

Aki shrugs, finishing his coffee and gathering the dishes in his arms. “Beats me, Shinji. I’m not complaining though.”

Ken grins. “Oh! By the way, Mitsuru called the other day. Said she sent something to us in the mail. It should be here soon.”

Aki nods, and Shinji gets up. His bones pop and crack, and he winces as his scar twinges again. With the changing weather, it seems to be getting worse again. Oh, well. Just another thing to keep an eye on, really.

It always seems to get worse around midnight- the Dark Hour, and the time that channel the Investigation Team was talking about comes on. Not that Shinji ever checks it. Really, he thinks. There’s no point to it.

Time passes, and Ken is sitting at home alone. The others have gone out to do some shopping. Ken insisted that he was old enough to housesit, and it was Goro who convinced Dad and Papa to let him.

Ken pauses the TV when he hears a knock on the door. Is it that package Mitsuru sent?

He gets up, pauses at the door. A familiar voice sounds from the other side. “Delivery for the Sanadas!”

“Oh, hi, Namatame-san!” Ken grins as he opens the door. But what he’s met with isn’t Namatame-san. It’s a sack, trapping him in darkness as he tries to fight.

His Evoker. It’s still in his pocket, kept there just in case. He had stored it there out of habit, since the Dark Hour always lingers in the back of his mind. He tries to move his arms. Nothing. Shit.

He’s being hauled again, the sack is being lifted from his face and he’s falling, falling, falling.

The next and last thing he sees is fog, and a building that looks all too much like Tartarus.

omg maybelle u mentioned you’ve read beast… do u have any thoughts/headcanons about the relationship between oda and aku in beast… whether in the context of sickness or not i am so desperate for beast oda crumbs you have no IDEAAAAA AHHHH ive imagined that beast aku’s chronic condition is quieter but more consistent than canon aku’s (which seems to be pretty severe, but only when it flares up? idk. maybe this is a dichotomy i made up in my head) and so i like to think oda is similarly quietly but consistently checking on aku all the time, making sure he’s not exerting himself too much, just kinda sitting with him and physically observing him and watching out for him… AHHH THATS HIS SON !!!

I Really love the idea of Oda silently observing Akutagawa from a distance and only intervening when he needs to...he wants to give him space to learn how to navigate his life on his own with the help of the people he's surrounded by...Oda tries to gently remind him when he's skipped meals accidently or when he's exerting himself too much physically (since we know certain Rashomon forms do heavily impact BSD Akutagawa physically, I think Beast Akutagawa has a much healthier constitution than his counterpart but he's not quite at a normal level...Oda does make a comment in Beast about Akutagawa's lack of phsyical strength), but Akutagawa has such a hard time asking for help when he's injured or sick because he's never had the option to really rest and be taken care of before...Kunikida is hard on him about it but Oda has to remind him that it's a mindset Akutagawa has created out of the way he used to live and to be kinder to him....Akutagawa has such a deep respect for Oda in Beast that he doesn't have for anyone else and I think he holds his opinion very highly and tries not to disappoint him, and he's always stuck between "Should I tell him I'm sick/injured or should I push forward so that they'll think I'm stronger than I used to be"🥺

And I'm SO TORN about Beast Akutagawa's lung situation because part of me is like he doesn't have it but he does still occasionally cough and cover his mouth in Beast but very very rarely...so I like to imagine it's more of a chronic condition because of his sickly constitution added with growing up in extreme poverty, than something terminal like BSD Akutagawa's (or maybe it is terminal and just not as progressed....who knows) but anyways this is something Oda has picked up on and is very concerned about and regularly asking Yosano to help him keep an eye out on his condition

I also really love the concept of Oda repeatedly asking Akutagawa to watch his children when he's out of town lol and I have this little idea in my head that he has a bad fever one time while he's watching them but he refuses to back down and tries anyway...Oda comes back and finds Akutagawa super out of it, curled up and shivering in one of the bunk beds and the older kids are like help what can we do for him😭😭😭😭 Akutagawa coming in and out of it, totally delirious and mistaking some of the kids for friends he lost in the slums (fun fact many of Odas kids share very similar names to Akutagawa's dead friends...Sakura/Sayaka, Katsume/Katsumi, Yuu/Yuji, Shinji/Shinya)...working himself up to the point of tears and not being able to breathe and Oda comforting him and staying with him until he's more himself im gonna lose it
