AU Headcanon: FMA!Shinji’s Transmutation Circle.

Before anyone says it looks quite a bit like the Human Transmutation circle, Shinji’s alchemy in FMA verse deals with plant / organic matter and the elements that make up said matter, so there are going to be some similarities! His alchemy can be extremely potent, and one mistake can be disastrous.

Analysis:

Hexagon: Deals with the elements as a whole; breaking down elements into atoms or molecules; common in organic transmutations or ones that involve chemistry. ( x )

Triangles / horizontal lines: Symbols for earth and air. Both are necessary for plant life. ( x )

Symbols: going clockwise, symbols for carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. ( 1, 2. ) The symbol for hydrogen on the chart that I referenced, which is not a list of widely known / understood symbols, is coincidentally also the symbol for gold. In alchemy, gold is also typically associated with the sun. ( 1, 2. )

I had text in the outer rim of the circle initially, which would have been instructions for a specific transmutation. I ended up omitting it from this version so that the circle would be more versatile. This way, its effects could vary more widely depending on what Shinji guides the circle to do. Also, it just makes it a billion times easier to get tattooed on the back of his hand.

Headcanon: FMA verse and Shinji’s alchemy

     FMA!Shinji was adept at alchemy from a young age, mostly because his mother was an accomplished alchemist specializing in organic matter; plants, as human transmutation is taboo and use of animals went against Yui’s morals. When Shinji developed the motor skills, Yui took to teaching him the most basic alchemical techniques and principles.

     When Yui lost her physical body and became embodied in a Philosopher’s Stone, she left behind research notes written in a code that she knew Shinji would eventually be able to interpret. Anyone else would have looked them over and not given them a second thought ( similarly to how the notes about the Fifth Laboratory were disguised as pages out of a cookbook ), but it was through these that Shinji learned how to perform transmutations with plant matter.

     In combat, Shinji is largely reliant on his natural surroundings to fight. He is advantaged in remote areas like forests and plains, where he can manipulate the plant life around him offensively or defensively ( e.g. changing the shapes, paths, and so forth of trees; making things grow from the soil he stands on; binding opponents with plant material; etc. ). However, he’s also capable of transmuting weapons from wooden structures in the same way that others can transmute them from metals. He can rearrange the chemicals in the wood to make such weapons more durable, and bind together / break down particles in soil to make it more suitable for his alchemy. Shinji’s understanding of the chemical makeup of plants allows for him to perform other transmutations with carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and other elements found in them.

     Of course, not all areas are heavily forested, especially not urban areas. In case of situations like these, Shinji keeps seeds on hand, which become useful if there is any sort of accessible soil. If he must, he might even improvise with cracks in pavement. Worse comes to worst, he may stick to transmuting wooden structures.

     And, as anyone might imagine, snow and deserts are to Shinji as rain is to Mustang.

{{ I’m alive...sort of...I saw the fma community was reviving on my dash, so I thought I’d just give a little status update. I’m still mainly here and here. The former has an fma verse that I would love to flesh out more. Uh? I’ll probably rewatch fmab over spring break in order to get the juices going again, because I love Al and I love all the friends I’ve made in this fandom and I don’t want to abandon that. I’m also on skype and discord, so please feel free to ask for those if we’re mutuals.

I guess the other big thing is, save for some lengthier / plotted things, I’ll probably do a mass thread drop here and start fresh? Like, I’ll keep stuff that’s good for character development or that has a clear direction, but otherwise I’ll probably drop the more uncertain ones, just to keep my load down. I have over 30 threads on Shinji and I would rather that not happen on my other blogs, too, haha.

A couple additional FMA verse headcanons that I forgot last night because I wrote that headcanon at 1AM

Shinji’s State Alchemist title is the Rebirth Alchemist.

Gendo is a high-ranking military official. Part of Shinji’s motive to become a State Alchemist, besides the approval of his father, was to find out how his mother disappeared and if there is a way to bring her back.

Later, he also wants to find out the nature of Kaworu and Rei’s existences. They’re probably Homunculi in this AU.

By virtue of being able to manipulate carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and other elements present in soil, Shinji can cause some devastating explosions.

Theoretically, he could manipulate human flesh and perform transmutations similar to Shou Tucker, but because that would go against Yui’s morals and everything she taught him / left behind in her research notes, he doesn’t.

He could also potentially emulate Greed’s carbon shield, but he would have to actually meet a Greed in a thread for this to occur to him.

Someone please just give me a super fucked up thread where someone is like “you’re not using your alchemy to its full potential look at all this cool shit you could be doing”
