🦇 Happy Friday, my beloved bookish bats! Today I'm sharing some of my pictures (via my bae, director and photographer extraordinary) from my birthday trip to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens' Alice in Wonderland exhibit. To ease into a relaxing weekend (to offset last weekend's adulting, here's a fun challenge! Feel free to answer one of the questions below or... ⤵

❓Which of these stunning pieces are your favorite?

♥ 𝐀 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐞 : 🦇 In case it wasn't obvious, Alice in Wonderland. Also Peter Pan. Both are about forms of escapism despite society's desire for us to grow up. Personally, I think we need to retain as much of our childhood wonder as possible, if not to enjoy life, than for the sake of empathy.

♦ 𝐀 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐲: 🦇 The first fantasy story I ever read was a children's version of Arabian Nights, which is by far my favorite classic. Reading the full version before and during college as a literature student only enhanced that love for fantasy.

♣ 𝐀 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐈 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 : 🦇 If you've been here a while, you've likely heard me recommend The Lunar Chronicles a few times. Other go-to recommendations include Fangirl, The Wrath & the Dawn, Gearbreakers, Evil Eye, The Fiancee Farce, and Strange the Dreamer.

♠ 𝐀 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: 🦇 I wouldn't say "changed," but I thought a lot about Roses in the Mouth of a Lion after reading it. I haven't seen my experience growing up as a queer Muslim reflected in books much, and the compounded experiences of that FMC left me with mixed feelings.

♥ 𝐀𝐧 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫 𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝟏𝟎 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐛𝐲: 🦇 Jill Mansell, which I know so many of you haven't read anything by, but who I always recommend for contemporary rom-com sweetness.

♦ 𝐀 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 🦇 The Wrath & the Dawn, which I'm shocked to hear many people haven't read.

♣ 𝐀 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧: 🦇 Honestly? I really really prefer we didn't ruin amazing stories by adapting them. Don't get me wrong, there are some decent adaptations out there, but the majority just...disappoint. If I'm pressed to choose, I'd say Gideon the Ninth, which is so dizzying as a book that it might clarify SO MUCH to see it on screen.

BIO / SUMMARY

Imani knew from a young age that she wanted to be child-free, but one can argue that reason was due to her being forced to watch her younger siblings. Both of her parents worked long hours, one is a doctor and the other is a lawyer. They both had the money to hire a babysitter, but according to them that would be a waste of money. Why hire someone when they can have their oldest daughter do it. They try to frame it as a great bonding experience for her. However, to Imani, she hated it. She loves her siblings and she loves spending time with them. But she didn’t want to be responsible for them. She wanted her own life, to do her own things. This cause a drift between her and her parents and resentment towards her siblings. 

Her relationship with everyone was rocky, but as she got older and moved out it approved. Her relationship with her siblings was better. With her parents, well it was okay. She realized her resentment should go to them, and not her siblings. She learned to move passed it but she does have her moments of being bitter that her parents never acknowledge their wrong doing or apologized. 

Imani went to school to be a nurse, it was not what her parents wanted. Maybe that's why she went into it at first, but she learned that she actually like what she was studying. Being a nurse was enough for her. She didn’t want to become a doctor and live under her mother’s shadow, nor did she want to become and lawyer and live under her father’s shadow. Though being a nurse won’t exactly allow her to escape any type of comments about her mother. Nor, how people will comment on her becoming a nurse instead of following in her mother’s shoes. But she was able to block that out. It’s easier blocking out comments about what career choice she should’ve made than comments about her abilities/skill being weaker than her mothers. 

The comments lessened once she got married to her best friend, the name changed allowed her to escape the same old comments from new, or other, co-workers who have not yet learned who her mother was. Soon, the comments completely stopped when applied and became a traveling nurse. Her husband decided to quite and pursue writing and she wanted to support his new career path. So she applied to a new positioned that allowed her to get more money and to travel around. It almost felt like her life was perfect. She got to go to new places for extended period of time and make more money. Her husband came along, which allowed him to find muse in the new place they end going to due to her job. They got to explore new areas and make new friends. And when she went to the next destination, they do it all over again. Explore their new surrounding, makes friends, and her husband find more muse. 

After her husband ended up published several novels and created a big following from his traveling blog, things started to slow down. It was not their plan, but they decided to slow things down when she learned she was pregnant. It threw them for a loop. Especially since her husband had a vasectomy. While he didn’t accuse her of cheating, and she was thankful for that, she knew the thought must have come up. But she was quick to say she will get a paternity test because she knew for a fact that this was his baby. After the test came back, they both took time to think about if this was something they wanted or if they wanted to go through with aborting the pregnancy. Yes, Imani always believed she was child-free. But the idea of having a baby with her husband was not as terrifying. She knew who he is and he would be if they were to have kids. She knew he would help her and that she wouldn’t be doing this all alone. So they decided that they were going to keep the baby. 

With that in mind, Imani knew that they will have to go back home - meaning her time as a traveling nurse was over. It was time for them to go home and get ready for this new chapter in their life. She never thought she would be excited for this, and honestly - she was worried. With the age she was, there was a possibility of of complications with the pregnancy. While she loved the experienced they built together, there was a part of that wish they realized they wanted this at a younger age. However, she wanted to stay optimistic. Everything in her life was going so well, of course this had to work out. But, unfortunately for her, it did not work out. On the drive home from work one night she got into a horrible accident - one that her husband wasn’t even sure she was going to make. Fortunately for her, she did. But she lost many things in the process. She got a burn scar on her back, her left leg was amputated, and lost her pregnancy.

Imani always felt like she was a strong person who could get through anything, but this. This was something she never imagined happening. Even over a year of all of this happening, she still struggles to grasp her new reality. Who she is now is completely different from who she was before. She felt like a part of her died that day. She’s a shell of a person that has so much anger built up inside. She has resentment toward the driver that has done this to her. The only thing that she is doing is slowly pushing her husband away. As much as she wants to let him in, she’s afraid that he can’t accept the person she was forced to become. She just has negative thoughts in her head. She’s convinced that he’s only staying to seem like a good husband - but in reality he really wants to leave. She knows its a horrible thought to have. She’s been having a lot of irrational thoughts, ones that make her feel guilty for having. But the main one is, if she can’t accept her own body now, how can he? She wants to get better, she wants to be like the people she sees online that are confident with themselves after having scars or injuries from an accident. But she just finds herself stuck in her own depression, relying on her anger as some form of comfort as she pushes her husband away.

Outfit Headcanons

♕ - beach / swimsuit 

♤ -  Look-At-Me-I’m-Hella-Attractive Outfit

♥ -   A “traditional” outfit based on their heritage (i.e. kimono, sari, other folk costumes)

Bonus because I misread these symbols and didn’t realize until after I made all of this up that the first one was actually…

♛ -formal outfit

Halter-top-like swimsuits are the way to go. Like with her normal way of dressing, she doesn’t bother trying to cover up her old burn scar nor seem especially self-conscious about it. There are also coverups to be considered as well that she also rocks.

Hella attractive outfit? You mean like every day? Being hit on by especially rude or pushy people because of how she looks is annoying, but like hell she’s going to let those people take the enjoyment she gets out of dressing in clothes she likes and looking good. 

As for traditional…eh, there’s not really…anything? sort of? Imani’s African-American so I guess we could take a look at cultural African outfits. But that varies from region to region and people group to people group and there’s no way she would have a way of knowing those specifics.

Formal outfits depend on the event but if we’re talking where she’d have to be dressed to the nines then she would wear dresses like these.

ok but

let me talk about why i love bridget’s “makeover” in trolls so much--it’s not something that really has anything to do with me, as much as it has to do with my little sister imani.

imani, like me, wears glasses, and unlike me, had a really bad overbite as a kid. unfortunately, she had to live through some bullying and people outright calling her ugly. >:(

so to see a character who essentially has a lot of the same appearance that my sister does get a makeover that doesn’t change her face at all--not even the buck teeth means a lot to me! especially after seeing so many pieces of media that treat makeovers as borderline plastic surgeries (*GLARES AT BRATZ). i don’t know if it means that much to imani, but as her sister, it definitely means a lot to me. thank you, trolls. ♥

1. Sulani~ the place where I just wanna be since I love the ocean and combing for shells and with its little Moana references ♥

2. San Myshuno~ ahh the place that started everything for Imani and Jay and where Collin grew up most of his life I can be close to those city lights for free haha and alot of potential

3. Mt. Komorebi~ I live for this world its like goin to Japan without catching the plane there and always admire and learned about their traditions and its so relaxing.

4. Henford-on-Bagley~ the rural lover of me and cottage core and gardener of me loves this place ♥

5. Tartosa~ I am a sucker for anything Mediterranean and you betcha that huge ass waterfall won me over too and also caters for the romantic side of me that I keep under wraps ♥
