Husk's Hot Take: Oh, look. It’s that time of year again—when everyone decides this is the year they’ll magically fix their lives, as if a new calendar is some kind of personality reset button. Newsflash—it’s not. It’s just January with more guilt and less booze left in your fridge.

I don’t get the whole “New Year, New Me” thing. What’s wrong with the old you? Aside from the crippling anxiety and questionable decisions, but hey—those build character. You think swapping donuts for kale and waking up at 5 AM to meditate is gonna make you a better person? No. It’s just gonna make you hungry and tired. Congratulations on setting yourself up for failure.

And don’t even get me started on gym memberships. Every January, gyms get flooded with people who wear matching workout sets and think sweat is just “glitter leaving the body.” Give it two weeks before those treadmills are collecting dust again. You’re not committed—you’re just guilty about all the pie you ate in December. Own it.

Honestly? Resolutions are just socially acceptable self-loathing. You don’t need a new year to change—you need therapy, a nap, and maybe a stronger drink. But sure, go ahead—promise yourself you’ll be different this time. Just don’t come crying to me when you’re crying into a pizza by February.

Happy New Year. I’ll be at the bar if anyone needs me—and no, I’m not sharing my whiskey.

Prophecy and Mediumship in Hoodoo

Hoodoo, born in the Americas through the experiences of Black Americans, holds diverse meanings for different practitioners—some see it as a spiritual system, others as a way of life, and some, like myself, view it as a religion. Within the depths of hoodoo, there exists a myriad of practices, all stemming from the spiritual beliefs inherited from our ancestors, albeit tempered by the harsh realities of slavery.

A distinct spiritual trait that resonates strongly within the Black community is our innate ability to heal and see, particularly in the context of prophecy. Prophecy, often associated with characters in Christian philosophy acting out divine will, extends beyond religious boundaries. Prophets, far from being relics of ancient religions, exist in the present day. Whether you explore Black religions, spiritual systems, or those influenced by Black spirituality such as Islam and Christianity, you'll find an abundance of seers—individuals capable of sharing insights gained through spirit, dreams, or visions.

Traditional hoodoo, predating modern divination tools like cartomancy, dice, dominoes, and tarot, relied heavily on dreams and visions. Our elders would nap in prayer and awaken with revelations—a form of Black American divination. Every cultural spiritual system has its unique form of divination, and for us, it encompasses dreams, prayers, visions, and even casual conversations.

Have you ever been engaged in conversation and pieced together information seemingly from nowhere? Or encountered an elderly Black woman who warned you about potential troubles? This, too, is prophecy—an integral part of our cultural heritage.

Mediumship plays a pivotal role in hoodoo, with practitioners thriving on ancestral veneration to uplift and work with the spirits of the dead. As one progresses from a novice to a hoodoo conjurer, channels open to allow contact with spirits. Practices such as graveyard walks, visits to crossroads or forests are acts of mediumship, as conjurers commune with the spirits residing there.

In hoodoo, many of our spirits were once living, and they yearn to collaborate with us. Engaging in rituals at these sacred sites not only uplifts our spirits but also allows them to guide and support us. Authentic hoodoo practice opens channels and leads to a form of self-initiation. As you delve deeper into your journey, gifts you never knew you possessed may surface, often traced back to a specific ancestor in your family.

Genealogy, an essential aspect of our mediumship, unfolds through ancestral veneration. As you honor your ancestors, they guide you to where you need to be. Mediumship in hoodoo is not a hurried process; it's a journey of self-discovery and healing. Eventually, you may find yourself interceding for others, but first, there's a personal healing and transformation that awaits each practitioner.

prophecy and mediumship serves as a profound tool for both personal healing and acting as intermediaries for others. Those seasoned in the craft, having traversed the intricacies of life, acquire the ability to peer beyond the veil. In my understanding and based on research, it's evident that spiritual gifts are inherently woven into the fabric of most, if not all, Black Americans. Many, unknowingly, harness these gifts in their daily lives. However, for those consciously developing and nurturing these aspects, spiritual and tangible rewards unfold.

As a prophetic medium, my daily routine involves moments of meditation, reading, and yes, even napping—I have the privilege of being a stay-at-home wife, after all. During the rhythm of my household chores, I engage in the act of conjuring spirits, invoking protection, healing, and love, while simultaneously binding spirits that may pose a threat. This deliberate practice is an embodiment of mediumship.

Hoodoo, in essence, is an intricate tapestry of mediumship and prophecy. It transcends the conventional notions of a spiritual system, demanding more than the mere arrangement of altars and the creation of honey jars. Hoodoo necessitates an inward journey—an exploration of self that goes beyond the surface. At its core, there is no hoodoo without acknowledging and venerating the ancestors. In the practice of hoodoo, progression is contingent upon a profound acknowledgment of one's lineage.

For Black Americans, this work is not just a choice; it's a necessity. Generations of healing beckon us, stemming from the profound scars of slavery and other malicious acts directed towards our community. The true essence of hoodoo lies in the depth of this self-awareness and the unwavering commitment to healing the wounds passed down through generations. As we engage in this work, we embark on a transformative journey that not only heals the individual but also contributes to the collective healing of our people.

growth reflections — i found that releasing my resistance to deep intimacy has been healing. i had some traumatic relationship experiences that made me shield myself from being too vulnerable, out of fear that i’d suffer again. i think a bit of fear is normal bc there’s always a risk with intimacy, but now i’ve learned not to let it control me :) i am proud of myself

Sleep No More Spell Jar Trinkets

With the closure of Sleep No More imminent, fans the world over are gathering in NYC to celebrate and mourn the show's impressive run. I myself will be attending the final two shows on January 4 and 5, as well as all three nights of Apparitions, the series of closing parties held in the McKittrick. And like many other fans on the SNM fan Discord, I will be making trinkets to exchange with other fans at these final events.

My trinkets take the form of tiny spell jars, a common tool in modern witchcraft in which various meaningful components are added to a jar with magical intentions and sealed with wax as a talisman of sorts. You can keep the jar in your home or in another significant place as a tool to attract beneficial energies or ward away negative ones. For a show as steeped in witchcraft as Sleep No More, I thought this would be an appropriate way to show my love while practicing my craft.

I have created four varieties of spell jar to bring to these final events and share with other fans. Please see below the break for a breakdown of what you will find in each jar and the meaning behind each inclusion.

The Lobby - Manifestation

I chose to pair a manifestation spell jar with the theme of the lobby as a sort of homage to the Porter, ever trapped in place there. With the ending of the show, I like to imagine that he has finally manifested his freedom from that place, and with this jar, you too can manifest your desires.

This spell jar contains:

salt, for grounding and protection

tea leaves, to represent the courage to escape your fate

dandelion, to represent wishes coming true

clear quartz, for strengthening and channeling your desires

citrine, for manifestation

sunstone, for freedom and personal power

a key, to unlock all doors, and to represent the hotel lobby

a paper boat, with the intention "I manifest my desires" written on it, to represent the Porter

It is sealed with orange wax.

King James - Protection

...why the honest men...

It seemed natural to name a spell jar focused on protection and good health for the King James Sanitorium. As sinister as it is, it represents a place of refuge and of safety from the rest of the McKittrick. May this jar bring you the protection of this place above it all.

salt, for grounding and protection

pine needles, also for protection

mistletoe, for health and protection

chamomile, for meditation and protection

black tourmaline, you guessed it, for protection

unakite, for healing and patience

a nail, for protection and to represent the Nurse

pieces of chalk, to draw protective magic near, and to represent the Matron

Gallow Green - Power

...we know what really happened...

The beating heart of the McKittrick and the place most replete with witchcraft, I chose Gallow Green as the association for a spell jar focused on magnifying one's personal power. There is a little bit of all the denizens of the High Street in this jar, and their different varieties of power and magic are captured so that you too might feel them.

This spell jar contains:

salt, to represent the energy of earth

ash, to represent the energy of fire

a feather, to represent the energy of air

a seashell, to represent the energy of water

mugwort, for psychic power

a fennel seed, for protection, and to represent Agnes

labradorite, for both magical power and protection

moonstone, for intuition and the energy of the goddess, and to represent Hecate

red thread, knotted three times, for binding negative energies, and to represent Fulton

Hey, this isn’t a bother at all. This is a tricky situation, and ultimately we feel only you and your system will be able to determine exactly what’s going on with y’all.

It’s possible to be a kinplural system - to have a system that formed due to kintypes splitting off and becoming their own headmates. So, to us, it makes sense that the inverse of this could happen - a system who fused and in the process remnants of the previous headmates remained as kintypes. If this is the case for you, all these kintypes likely are directly connected to your system, but that may not necessarily be the case.

You may find it useful to use an app like SimplyPlural to help manage and keep track of your kintypes. While it’s true the app is made by and for systems, it probably could have a bunch of practical uses for those who have lots of kintypes or other identities to keep track of. Also just starting a list of your kintypes, only adding to it when you notice new ones/are able to, and just slowly building it up over time could potentially also help with this.

Honestly we might recommend allowing yourself to just… exist. You don’t have to be 100% on top of or in tune with all of your kintypes at all times. It’s okay to just be yourself and connect with things in the moment, without the stress of feeling like you have to have full control over everything you feel/identify with. Maybe try some meditation or self awareness exercises to help yourself relax. Of course, you’re welcome to do as you wish - this is just a suggestion.
