on cql divergences.

i realise i never posted about how much of the drama i take into my canon and what things i don’t acknowledge so here’s a lil post about it, hopefully it will make plotting a bit easier.

generally i’m very pleased with the adaptation (budget and censorship considered) and the order of certain scenes being altered doesn’t that much of a difference specially for characters unrelated to the wangxian storyline so for anyone who is cql based only i’m alright complying to the order of the plot as is in the show.

lwj as chief cultivator :

i believe this decision for the adaptation was meant to show how the whole jgy saga left the cultivation world in shambles and there was so much that needed to be rebuilt from scratch. this means someone had to step up to set things in order, even if that someone wasn’t exactly qualified.

i also understand that the show writers didn’t have the extra chapters the novel has to show the level of devastation left behind amongst sects and i would even agree under given these specific circumstances that lwj may accept this position out of obligation because he truly wants to help and do the right thing.

but he’s never been interested in the politics of cultivation sects, he does not care for the bureaucracy of it all. so for cql verses : while he may have taken up the role of his excellency for a short period of time, he would eventually (sooner rather than later) give it up to devote himself to night hunting with his cultivation partner. 

this shouldn’t be much of a problem when it comes to plotting though! it opens the spot to be taken by any other surviving character or even an oc. 

if anyone would be interested in that concept i’d love a plot with someone taking that role off lwj’s hands! 

what i am 100% keeping from cql into my novel canon :

tldr: the lan yi / baoshan sanren storyline. the iron yin subplot is okay, it served its purpose on the show but it’s unlikely it will be brought up in writing just because it’s not that relevant. 

but the lesbian ancestors, the cold pond cave and the magic gay rabbits are staying !!! i really like what these characters add to the story, i love how ly and bssr mirror wangxian’s dynamic and hardships and the trope of queer descendants breaking bad cycles.

and this doesn’t hate to necessarily contradict the novel canon bit of wwx gifting the two rabbits to lwj, in fact those rabbits wwx found could’ve come from the cold pond cave so that’s what i’m going with. everything works out beautifully, bless the fuck up.

bonus rabbit headcanon ! 

the existence of certain rabbits wearing tiny lan headbands imply that some members of the lan bloodline are capable of shape-shifting into rabbits themselves (though probably it’s just lan yi and lwj, but if any other lan muse wants to be bunny too we can def plot this👁️)

therefore bunji is canon. 

also lwj will shift into bunny when he’s anxious or upset, but only in the presence of someone he feels safe with (so, only wwx and lxc) or to hide amongst the other rabbits when whatever situation is stressing him out can’t be immediately addressed / resolved immediately and he doesn’t want to stay at home pacing.

anyone can tell bunji apart from the other rabbits by the glowing tiny lan headband.

in general lwj is pretty at peace with being quiet and not very social. he’s come to accept people will make assumptions about him and think he’s arrogant or intimidating or whatever else when in reality he’s just unintentionally grey rocking them.

and he’s okay with it because those who know him well enough can read him. 

but he does regret not having been able to communicate better what his intentions were back when he wanted to bring wwx to cloud recesses. he might’ve been rejected anyways, but he would’ve rather wwx rejected him because of his feelings or because he hated cloud recesses and not because he thought lwj was trying to imprison him.

he thought he was so transparent and his feelings so obvious, and maybe it’s just wwx that was oblivious but. yeah he regrets not having been more explicit about his intentions so at least wwx knew he had an option and what the option entailed.

idk if i should even tag this as a headcanon bc it’s pretty obvious to me (and anyone with a lick of reading comprehension) that lwj would not get along with jc post canon. ever. not as is, at least. 

jc would have to come to cloud recesses on his knees and begging for forgiveness. not from him but from wwx. and we all know jc is way too proud to accept he was a dickhead and wrong because honestly?? he feels justified, he has a lot of reasons to feel wronged and defensive. he feels he’s justified in hurting wwx, and wwx accepts it because he feels guilty so of course lwj is angry for his husband. 

that’s kind of the point of having nuanced interpersonal conflicts in the story. just a thought.

thinking about how lwj prolly doesn’t even know how old is he exactly because so many of the years after wwx’s death were kind of a blur.

lwj’s love language is writing songs. which is cute enough. but really, they’re full fleshed love letters encoded in guqin language.

lwj is truly not a petty king. he’s so beyond patient is not even funny. he’s so far removed from ~worldly matters~ he honestly does not care when someone tries to piss him off. hence people often mistaking his indifference for arrogance...

but on rare occasions when he does feel petty, he’s the kind to make passive aggressive (very minimal) comments like “have a day” instead of have a good morning. and we love that for him.

on lwj’s golden eyes :

not me back on my asoiaf bs thinking about how valyrian’s features, namely hair and eyes, were mutated by the magic involved in bonding with dragons. 

because if any form of “magic”, or qi exchange between a mortal with the supernatural (like the lan bloodline specialising in spirit communication) can do that then that would explain some cultivators developing unnatural eye colours over generations.

i’m guessing this would eventually be passed down like a genetic trait, but could also be ever so slightly altered be strengthening one’s golden core. 

the higher one’s cultivation level is, the stronger or more  unnatural one’s eye colour becomes. 

for instance, lwj’s eyes being more so bright gold than dark brown and lxc’s eyes closer to brown but still a honey colour. it would make sense since lxc’s responsibilities don’t revolve directly around cultivating and his cultivation wouldn’t be as high as lwj’s given night hunting is lwj’s primary job. 

that’s not to say he’s not a strong cultivator ofc, he’s really up there with the elite for sure. just that in comparison, someone dedicated to politics wouldn’t have as much practice as someone who dedicates his life to it like lwj. 

so their eye colour/s would be a combination of : strong cultivator genes passed down by their father  + a little genetic variation because siblings, not identical twins + a slight difference due to the strength of their cores.

all of lwj’s rabbits are male.

no one knows how they keep reproducing but they do.

back when they belonged to lan yi they were all female and were capable of reproducing regardless as well.

with fandoms based on fantasy i default to the asoiaf lore. xianxia/danmei being a fictionalised take on ancient china fits the way different regions in the asoiaf verse are loosely based on real life places, but not being actually historical. and according to grrm the area of yi ti is actually based on ancient china so there’s that lmao. 

this is so i know how to conceptualise the world outside of lwj’s country, so this should make things easier to plot with other fantasy based characters.

with historical based fandoms i’ll try to tone down the fantasy/magical aspect of the lore to accommodate a more realistic setting so it’s easier to handle c:
