He's a major masochist, so it's not a surprise that he's into the thing he's into. He thrives off of the pain and that is a major motivation for him. While he does enjoy the pain, he wants it to be balanced with pleasure as well.

but the big ones on there? cascades (dirt road version) by metric, the man who sold the world (and i chose the nirvana cover because the sound of it fits him more imo), as well as i definitely saw counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums by a perfect circle as like a centerpiece song on this playlist because it, like, not only encapsulates the kinds of assignments he was taking for the rebellion but also the psychological damage it was doing to him and the nervous breakdown he was having as a result. for something not on this playlist, the entire album of the downward spiral by nine inch nails is very cassian coded because it's the collective descent into self-loathing of it all.

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

if cutthroat kitchen were a thing in star wars, its personification would be cassian. like... i tend to agree with diego luna's headcanon that cassian is a good cook, and not only that, that at least at some point, he could actually start to find some satisfaction in it, but you don't interrupt him. you don't come near him. he's focused, he's in the zone, also he has a knife in his hand?? probably better to just leave.

also he would absolutely be all about keeping his workstation/kitchen/whatever very pristinely organized, and heaven help anyone who ever messed with it.

honestly... most of them? like i don't really have a lot of strong shipping opinions and i think there are a lot of different things you could explore, so i'm cool. me personally? i just think there's something very specifically wrong with cassian that doesn't really make him gel into most of these ships with, like, people who are better adjusted than he is ghfjdsk (and one of the reasons i think he and jyn go so well together is because there's something very specifically wrong with both of them and their trauma/damage is very complementary), but like... be free and live your best lives, fellow fans 🫡

Turns out, he’s very protective of his family and will Beat Your Ass for his brother.

I just spent way too long scrolling through your posts and I'm going to do it some more after this but in one old post you said Diego started being the rebellious one after Five time-traveled into the future so like... Any headcanons on Diego understanding Five and his semi-magician "protect siblings" ways a little more (like how Five is in your lessons verse)

the difference here between the two is motivation - the outcome and the action are the same but the motivation behind them are very different. When lessons ‘verse Five acted out and rebelled, it was with the underlying whisper of look at me, look away from the others, protect them by taking the blow where they cannot

Diego on the other hand, rebelled in order to rebel. His chain of though was not protect Klaus, for example, it was ‘Dad is bullying Klaus and this gives me an opportunity to rebel.’ He was rebelling for rebellions sake, not his family’s. But as he grew closer to Klaus, the goal might have changed to rebel-and-protect all rolled into one

Ironically enough for someone who throws knives for a power, Diego is remarkably blunt and honest. Five on the other hand is a knife, sharp and cutting in both words and action. He’s rusty, and out of practice dealing with people, but lessons ‘verse Five has an underlying current of look over here, look over here, and you’ll never notice what’s creeping up behind you

he’s the beautiful assistant and the magician all rolled into one package. He shows people what they want to be shown, because when we see what we expect we so rarely look any closer. People want to be right, and so Five makes them right and they don’t look beyond that.

but Diego?? Diego is blunt. He’s rebellious because he hates his father and wants to be difficult. To be fair, his path is a little easier. It’s more difficult to come up with torturous training for Diego’s power of throwing knives than it is for Five’s (unless you could Diego’s ability to hold his breath in the comics, leaving him in a tank for untold lengths of time would certainly serve as a sufficient punishment)

Diego saw a rift left by Five, and he stepped up to fill it. He might not have understood the underlying reasons behind it, but the result was still the same: a small measure of protection. (Ben still died though. Ben died and there was nothing anyone could do.)

however I could see Five thinking that Diego fully understood, after he found out about Diego stepping up to fill his role as the rebellious member of the family

and Diego might be blunt but he’s still smart in his own way. So when Five makes comments that he seems to expect Diego to understand, about misdirection and protection and the line between baring your teeth and baring your throat, Diego listens. And he puts the pieces together. And he realizes.

Five grins and comments on how towards the end there he could switch Dad’s attention from Klaus to himself with only three words and he bet Diego never did better than that

and Diego figures out that Five’s actions tend to have layers to them. He so very rarely does something for only one reason, and he basically lives by the motto of “kill two birds with one stone.” 

Diego figures out just how often Five threw himself on the grenade, tossed himself on the sword, took the blow because he figured he could weather it but wasn’t certain if the others could

and if you think that doesn’t blow up Diego’s protective instincts (which he does have!! he just didn’t apply them in that specific situation, and only because he never thought of it like that otherwise he would have) then u don’t know Diego. He looks at the shrapnel wound Five hid in a new light - in the light of “Five almost killed himself because he wanted to stop the apocalypse and didn’t care if he survived to see it through as long as we did”

and Five doesn’t like being coddled, doesn’t like being protected, but he understand debts at least. So if Diego justifies him sometimes stepping in front of Five and taking the blow, of protecting his brother, of helping instead of leaving him to his own devices - he can simply tell Five that he’s paying him back and Five will accept that where he accepts few other excuses

Diego doesn’t correct Five’s assumptions about his motivations, but he does remember the next time that Five is being infuriating that he needs to look beyond his brother’s words and actions for the desired results, and then backtrace from there for motivations to try and figure out why Five is doing what he does

he still doesn’t understand his brother, not entirely, but that doesn’t really matter. Because he loves his brother, and he’s trying, and sometimes that’s enough

honestly? i believe that for mateo who cried in literally every. single. episode. about everything, and who was so mad about rio sacrificing diego, who cried for diego while diego was still alive (and don't forget that diego was in NO WAY as close to mateo as rico was) who was so so sensitive about any injustice, so sensitive in general, for that mateo seeing the murder of the person who was so inspiring to him, who he slept with, who he modelled himself around, and not react emotionally to it is impossible, EVEN if all the time they had together was ONLY the scenes we saw, there's no double standard, whether i think they spend a lot of time together or just the things we saw on screen, mateo as we know him should have been affected either way

and about his suddenly found abilities: if it didn't happen on screen and if it wasn't mentioned it. never. happened., that's how it works, that's writing, you can't suddenly show a character sword fighting just because he spent some time with a warrior, you can't show character who never knew how to drive driving like a professional racer even if he spent month around one, that's not how it works, that's not how you tell a story, last time we saw mateo, before that scene in the cat showing off his new outfit, he was still a crying baby, sensitive, chaotic, driven by guilt, one short dialog with rio is not nearly enough to change all that

i am mad about all that because, can you imagine, mateo was my second favourite character and i wanted him to have a soul and a good believable development, even tho it was negative development, but he didn't have that, they just changed him in a second and now he's suddenly rico 2.0, i don't want another rico, i want the mateo i loved, the character who would cry for someone who was barely his friend, let alone someone who invited him into his life, his home, his gang, his family and even into his bed

for mateo to mourn rico the things we saw on screen are more than enough, for him to suddenly fight with a blade - not at all

i've waited for this show for years, i loved the show, and promoted it for ten weeks straight, i was emotionally invested in the story all in all, mateo was one of the reasons i was watching it not routinely but actually enjoying, i still believe that all in all show is good (tho with occasional big screen writing fuck ups, which upsets me so deeply as someone who was a fan of john logan's writing for years), i believe that show is important for people, and i still recommend it to people even tho i won't be watching season two

but let me mourn not one, but two of my favourite characters, and their relationships, because for me they not only killed rico, they stripped mateo of all his traits and personality in the process, they destroyed the character for me in seconds just like that

i'm not gonna lie the theme of such a betrayal is also pretty triggering to me, and again not gonna lie that as a bisexual such a twist with flyvega upsets me too, so it is weirdly personal, but it doesn't cloud my judgement, mateo was friendly with rico that same night, he was still a sensitive boy crying while arguing with his family that same night, his reaction has nothing to do with some headcanons about rico teaching him to use a knife (because it never happened in canon), but rather with his personality, the reaction we saw is not mateo

no one is prohibited from blocking me, so if my posts upset you, you can always do that, but let me be mad about them butchering mateo too, because, i know it seems shocking, i really loved the character and i am mourning him too

also if you really saw my posts then you should have seen i was ready for rico to die almost from the start, it's not about the character dying, not really, it's about how it happened, i was expecting for him to die, but i was waiting for it to affect the characters who gave a damn about him while he was alive, i didn't expect to hate mateo (who i loved just two weeks ago), i didn't expect rico's death to make mateo so unlikable to me i can't even look at him now, i didn't expect it to ruin the most interesting arc of the show for me, it's not really about "secondary character dying", it's about one of the main characters turning into someone unfeeling, ungrateful, soulless in a matter of seconds

can we for a second talk about mateo swinging the knife at the sailors like he's a professional in it? where in hell did that even came from? he never EVER fought with a knife before, the only time he cut someone in his life was when the person was already beaten up and on the ground, and yet it was still awkward, messy, unsure, and now all of a sudden he swings a knife at four men larger than him with such ease and technique and confidence, he holds a knife for the first time and he does that, where's any logic???

i swear to god they want to turn him into rico 2.0 so badly they forget what the character is actually like, they are butchering mateo instead of just giving him negative development, he's not mateo anymore, he's a rico caricature

               ANON ASKED:  So I've been wondering this for a while, but do you imagine that when Diego was a vigilante, did he have any people other than Patch that were his friends? Did he save sex workers from Johns that got violent with them? Also how do you think he learned about trans people (He seemed to immediately got on board with Viktor and im curious how he learned about that)?

Hey nonnie! Thanks for this! So, I’m gonna answer this in chronological order for Diego’s life because I think that’ll make the most sense.

When Diego leaves the academy at 17, he spends the first few years out partying hard (see headcanon). This leads to him spending a lot of time in wild places doing whatever he wants, however he wants to. Some of this is done with Klaus who, in my head canon, is Diego’s favorite sibling (see headcanon). During this time, Diego tried a lot of things (and s3 kinda confirmed my hc around his experimenting with klaus) sometimes with his brother and sometimes alone which leads to him having some very bad experiences with drugs that put him off it for good but he does end up struggling with alcohol for quite a bit. 

In this world, he began befrieding a lot of different people that lived various lifestyles and began to learn the way the world works. It also encouraged him to find a way to keep helping others which is what initially led him to try and take the police academy seriously. However, it wasn’t long before Diego realized that serve and protect came with caveats and he wasn’t into that. He wanted to help people. He wanted to help whoever needed it no matter what. So, he turns back to what he knows - being a vigilante.

There, he was able to help not just who society thinks needs to be protected but people he saw needing protection. Families, sex workers, other people of color, marginalized groups....he wanted to help. Not be an enemy. Not ‘hunt’ them down and ‘keep the freaks off the streets’.

His first experiences with trans people wasn’t one he was necessarily aware of but someone he met through a group of friends. I headcanon that the siblings weren’t exposed to a lot of things BUT they aren’t sheltered or indoctrinated either. So, for Diego, when he found out that this person identified as trans, he kinda took it in stride. He’s not a judgemental person when it comes to how people live their lives. He sometimes will tease the people he cares about but those people know that if anyone actually stepped to them they’d find a blade in their face. He’s someone who genuinely accepts and will protect all. I mean, he knows where he came from, who he is and what that might seem like to others.

tl;dr: Diego had a wide array of friends and is actually pretty fun and easy to befriend when he’s not around his entire family. He’s quite non-judgemental and couldn’t stand finishing police academy because he wanted to actually help people and not be an agent of chaos. He believes in respecting people’s choices to live their lives as long as it’s not harming someone else and if you need someone to look out for you, he’s your boy.

Diego’s relationship with Klaus is....special. Diego often finds himself viewing Klaus more as a baby brother which makes him extra protective of him. He values the relationship with Klaus more than he might ever be able to express. Klaus has had his back more than any of his other siblings (that he can remember) and Diego makes it a point to return that to Klaus. They don’t always see eye to eye and he constantly worries about him but....if there’s anyone he truly trusts? It’s Klaus. Klaus is his best friend and will always be. 

𝟎-𝟒 

The first years of Diego’s life are marked heavily by his lack of speech and his gentle nature that was slowly being redirected to something more aggressive. Before the age of four, Diego spent much of his time with either Klaus or Vanya. While his other siblings probably didn’t mean to ignore him or leave him out, it seemed to happen more often than not with Diego being easy to forget when so quiet. Klaus, however, tended to try and incorporate Diego in activities which set the foundation for the relationship they’d develop as they got older. Diego doesn’t remember much of this time (due to a hc I have around Allison having to rumor them so they’d all forget Vanya’s powers)

𝟓-𝟏𝟑 

The next few years are probably the most ‘normal’ years in Diego’s life. With the addition of Grace to the family, Diego is finally able to work on moving past his stutter and finally showing off his persoanlity. Stubborn, opinionated and defiant. Something that doesn’t go over well with his father or most of his siblings. Save for Klaus. He seems to be most tolerant and amused by Diego and he appreciates that. Klaus seems to understand where Diego is coming from. Around the age of ten is the first time he considers Klaus his best friend. Of course , Diego knows the sentiment isn’t mutual. Diego is no one’s best friend. No matter how much he may want to be...he’s learned quickly and early that no one wants to be his. Still, he trusts Klaus in a way that he doesn’t trust the others. He knows that Klaus is someone he can rely on in a disagreement or training gone askew. Even if they’re on the same page for different reasons....Klaus is there and he can sway the others when needed. It’s....much appreciated. 

𝟏𝟒-𝟏𝟕

The teen years change so much in their lives but also seems to cement relationships. Five disappears first and it’s....a nightmare. No one knows how to handle it, their father doubles down on seemingly everything and there’s more than puberty on the horizon. As they get older, Diego’s relationship with Luther and Allison seems to constantly be on the verge of breaking. He finds himself relying more and more on Klaus and Ben and in some ways...they’ve formed their own half of a team. Klaus and Ben make Diego feel confident. Something their dad tries very hard to squash in their teens. 

For some reason, they seem to trust him with his ideas and plans and he’s thankful. They are his people. His responsibility. And maybe that’s not a role he’s supposed to assume but....the more Klaus spirals, the more he does until Ben is gone too and Klaus is the only one Diego has left. He’s failed Ben. He’s failed the others. He can’t fail Klaus. He also can’t stay at the academy much longer. But he doesn’t want to just leave his brother behind. Not after Klaus has saved his life. Not after seeing the path Klaus was on but...that time had to come. Ilt’s a regret that Diego carries, not asking Klaus to leave with him. Not dragging his brother out of the house right alongside him. But..who’s to say Klaus would have come? What would he want to do with Diego? Why would he want to go? 

Diego also becomes quite depressed during these years (for obvious and not so obvious reasons). He starts to wonder if he’s made up the relationships he has and, after losing Ben, comes to believe that Klaus can’t stand him/blames him for what happened. He doesn’t blame Klaus for thinking that. He feels as if he deserves that blame and begins to slightly pull away from Klaus thinking that’s what the other wants. (That’s also part of why he didn’t ask Klaus to leave with him)

𝟏𝟖-𝟐𝟗 

The next years are....hard. Diego spends the first year rather alone and he misses his brother more than he might ever admit. It takes time for Diego to get on his feet and start to make something out of his life but once he does, he knows he has to keep an eye out for his family. Specifically, Klaus. For Diego, his little brother is in trouble and he’s going to do what he can to look out for him. His home becomes an open door for Klaus (even if he gets annoyed at times). There’s a bit of an obsession with needing to save Klaus in some way. In needing to show his brother that things can be okay. It’s also during this time that his new friends start to point out that his relationships aren’t good. He can’t and he shouldn’t keep giving Klaus a pass. He can’t cave every time he calls. But they don’t understand. they don’t get it. Hell, he’s sure not even Klaus would get it but Diego owes him. Diego feels like he owes Klaus for all the comfort and friendship he gave Diego when the others wouldn’t. For every coloring sheet they finished together and every prank they managed to pull. If Diego can save that kid then....isn’t he obligated to do so? Klaus is the only person he knows might actually care about him and.....it’s selfish but he doesn’t want to lose that. Ever.

Now, there’s so much to figure out and learn. Their relationships have all been brought front and center with the need to reevaluate their family. He still feels incredibly responsible for Klaus but now...now he feels like the worst person to take that on. Why did he ever think he was capable of that job? Why did he ever think that he was the person who should? Klaus deserves better than a brother like him. They all do.

So, @nofive wants to know why diego didn’t look at him and honestly it’s....more to do with Diego’s views on how he judges his worth. With the other siblings, Diego has a slightly better idea of where he stands with them and what his role is in their life. When it comes to Five though...well....he’s not sure he’s actually worth Five’s time. I think Diego believes Five does care about the others but I think if pushed...he’d definitely think that he’s the one Five would leave behind if he HAD to pick one. He kinda feels that way with all his siblings but with Five it is stronger. It also doesn’t help that Five kind of accidentally doubled down on that feeling when he left Diego behind.
