It’s a little past eleven by the time Kim finally rises from her chair across from you, and through a jagged yawn bids you goodnight. You wave her off as she lumbers down the stairs and out of your sight, and it’s only when you hear the security gate fall shut behind her that you finally let yourself relax.

With a groan of relief, you push aside your keyboard and the tedious stack of files and let yourself slump forward on crossed arms. The creaky, unyielding plastic backing of your desk chair has done your already sore back no favour, and a low grumble arises in your throat as you gingerly stretch out as best you can within the confines of your space.

The tension headache that the harsh fluorescence of your computer monitor has started to give you is blossoming at the base of your skull, taking root in your aching shoulders and spreading all the way up your neck. It’s a prick of a headache, the kind that only a quiet night’s rest will fix, and though you know any other efforts are futile you still reach back and massage the site numbly with your fingertips. It lessens the pressure slightly, and the prospect of sticking it out just a little longer to finish out your work starts to feel less daunting - before a pair of warm hands land gently on your shoulders from behind.

You jolt with the fright, an exclamation starting in your throat before the hands acquiesce and lessen their hold on you. Coaxing slowly up your shoulders as you shoot upright, they stop just at the base of your neck and start to rub soothing circles into the nape of your neck where your hand had just been. That, and the familiar scents of gun oil and coffee are what ultimately relaxes you, and is what emboldens you enough to slap at one of the offending arms.

“Jesus, Al.” You scold, fear seceding and making way for relief as you look back to be met with a warm, fond smile from Alvin as he looks down to you. “Don’t do that!”

“Sorry, honey.” He apologises through a soft smile, not sounding in the least bit sorry. His hands stay gently massaging your neck, doing an awful lot better of a job than you’d been doing and it makes you relax back into his presence. “You feelin’ okay?”

“Better, now.” You tell him, though he doesn’t look convinced. A noise of disagreement rumbles through his chest, and he’s standing so close to you that you can nearly feel it - and you quickly take the opportunity to change the subject. “I wasn’t expecting to see you again, I thought you’d left for the night.”

“What, without you?” He arches an eyebrow, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth as he squeezes your shoulders reassuringly. “Like hell.”

A warm kind of bashfulness flushes through you, and it forces a blush onto your cheeks. Alvin must be feeling merciful as he decides no to poke fun at your state, and instead leans down to wrap his arms around you and pull you into a warm, protective hug.
