In verses where Anya is raised in the facility with her powers, her space is limited to a singular small room unless escorted somewhere else for experimentation or combat training. The whole room is covered in sheet metal to protect the structure from Anya’s abilities, and the furniture is mostly metal as well, bolted to the floor so that cannot become weapons. The only furnishings are a twin sized bed outfitted with one worn blanket and a pillow, all the cloth components bearing the scars of the power surges her nightmares cause; a small table with two benches; and a toilet. The room itself is barely big enough to comfortably fit all of this. There are no windows and no way to open the door from the inside so when she escapes, she has to take advantage of transfers. She has contact with numerous scientists and her official handler but no other children unless she’s tasked with killing them.

In her powerless verses where she grows up in her father’s basement, she has more space but the furnishings are more scant - a mattress on the floor, a blanket, and a pillow, all various levels of blood stained, like her clothes and the walls and the concrete floor. Some of it is her blood, some of it is not. She does have access to a full bathroom but anything that can be used against Aris has been removed including the door. There’s one small window, enough to let in some light but incapable of opening and too small for Anya to climb through it. She can’t even reach it. In this verse, her only long-term contact is her father but sometimes, he keeps her opponents for a few days before he tasks Anya with killing them. Sometimes, if they scare Anya enough, they don’t make it that long. He seems particularly pleased by this.

The SxF video game announced a couple weeks ago will be releasing on Switch in Japan on December 21st of this year, with other consoles and regions getting it in 2024. The Switch isn't region locked, so I'm planning to get the JP early release...mostly for these sweet pre-order bonuses!

Playing the game in Japanese will definitely be good practice for me 😁 Since it's mostly about slice-of-life stuff with Anya, I can't imagine it being that difficult to figure out!

A glimpse into Andrei’s (Armand’s) early childhood

We start with some bits from canon and then some head canons. The later are based on historical records of life during that era (sources below the cut), which tbh are scarce and may be a little stretched, so bear with me.

Canon (Chapter 10, TVA):

Andrei had at least four siblings – one older married sister (unnamed), another sister around his age (Anya), one younger brother (unnamed) and another brother which we know nothing about. He also had an uncle his age (Borys) who lived with them.

Andrei, his parents, his uncle and his siblings all lived in a wooden house in Podil (the oldest part of Kiev), just yards away from the Dnieper river. The house had rats and was very VERY cold. Based on historical facts – the house must have been a typical Russian “Izba” (more info in the head canon part).

His father was a hunter, the strongest man in town and well respected. He taught him how to hunt and ride a horse, Andrei was his favorite son. He often sang to him, he and Borys would sing together on occasion. He sang songs about the glory of old Kievan Rus, which Andrei did not favor.

He painted eggs with his mother – red dye and wax. The eggs were believed to heal the sick and ward off evil spirits. When they were done painting eggs, Andrei would place them in the orchards for good luck with the coming harvest, also on the door of his sister’s new home when she married to wish her good luck.

Head Canon:

Andrei’s birthday is on the 30th of November, which is the Name day for all people named Andrei. Tradition at the type suggested that it was a good omen to name the child with the name that corresponds to the day of birth. More on that in this post. BONUS: Andrei means warrior, as does Armand btw (coincidence? I THINK NOT! 🤨)

His mom’s name is Ekaterina, just cuz ❤ plus, it looks like @hekateinhell and I were both calling her that in our heads, so it must be fate.

Andrei and his family lived in what is typically known as a Russian “izba”. It was a wooden structure with only one room which the owners separated into several parts. The stove corner which was separated with a curtain was an obligatory part of the izba. There were also separate zones for men and women.  All corners in the house were built according to the four cardinal points, and the most important among them was the Eastern (red) corner, where the family had the iconostasis. The iconostasis is where they put up Andrei’s ikons, of which he painted many.

The masonry Russian stove is the main element of the interior of Andrei’s home. It had wooden benches that were used for sleeping which were stretched from the stove to the opposite wall. To lie on it, feeling warm and cozy was the ultimate dream, but as per custom – it was usually reserved for the head of the family. But Andrei would always use the opportunity to take a quick nap there during the winter, while his father was out hunting.

Andrei’s favorite and probably only sweet treat was baked milk (apart from fruit, which was typically boiled). It’s slightly aged cow milk that his mother left in the cooling stove overnight, which made it caramelize and thicken slightly and it was always a lovely surprise for Andrei to wake up to. Plus, it’s packed with calcium and gave him strength for the hunting trips with his father.

The stove was also believed to have healing capabilities. So when Andrei got a cold after a long hunting trip with Ivan, Ekaterina smothered him in blankets on the stove bed and gave him inhalations from chamomile tea steam. And when he got a fever, she would send Ivan to get ‘grave soil’ to sew into a cloth bag and hang around Andrei’s neck. It was believed at the time that soil taken from a grave could have healing qualities.

In medieval Russia it was believed that a sword and an earring make a man. Russian warriors have been piercing their ears since ancient times, it was a protective, magical action. Ivan wasn’t a wealthy man, but he had a pair of copper earrings which he wore proudly. When he took Andrei (his favorite son, to whim he gave the name ‘warrior’) on his first hunting trip he gave him one of the earrings. Andrei lost his earring while running from the Tatars, and it was the only thing Ivan found of his son after. Ivan wore both earrings until the day he died.

Literacy was extremely rare after the end of the Mongol occupation and schools in Russia wouldn’t exist for another 200 years. The only place one could learn to read and write was in the monasteries, which is exactly where Andrei learned both. He was the only literate in his family (the church disapproved of hunting so Ivan was not welcomed there). He read scripture to his  mother and his little sister Anya before falling asleep.

Bath time was not something Andrei would particularly look forward too. Ivan took him and his little brother to the Podil ‘banya’ (translate: bath house). He hated how sickeningly hot it was inside and how the air was thick with soot from the heating stove. While there, they had to anoint themselves with tallow, then they would take young reeds and lash their bodies (think Finnish sauna, except harsher). Ivan helped both boys with the lashing, it was believed that this was crucial to their good health. Andre did enjoy the dousing with cold water that followed after though.

Andrei scribbled notes and practiced writing on dried birch bark, paper was extremely difficult to find.

Andrei remembers his grandmother living with them when he was very little, he called her ‘babushka’. She was a hunched over woman with no teeth and an abundance or hardship written on her face, she didn’t live past her 45th year which was a longer life than most got at the time. He remembers her sitting on the porch of the izba, regaling him with stories of magical samodivas dressed in white and singing in the woods. He also remembers her threats that Baba Yaga (a witch) will snatch and eat him if he misbehaved. When she died, he wondered if perhaps she has sacrificed herself to Baba Yaga instead of Andrei, who had broken his father's bow when he was clearly told not to play with that.

Ivan took Andrei on his first hunting trip pretty early on, he knew his boy was strong. Andrei had just turned 8 when Ivan took it upon himself to teach him the craft in the winter’s season (January-February). The wolf is the most widespread large indigenous game animal in Russia of the times and that was their catch more often than not (wolf killers lol except they knew what they’re doing). They locate a pack and encircle them with a 3-5 km long tether. The cloth retains human scent so the wolves tend to stay in the encircled area. Ivan had Andrei help him with the tether and then demonstrates as he plucks them off one by one (remind you of someone?! In a certain scene in Venice with some shady nobles?).

Ivan was legendary with the bow and arrow (this part is canon, Armand compares him to Ulysses). And naturally he taught his boy how to use it as well and he was very vocal in his pride when Andrei shot his first hare.

On top of having almost no real life experiences, Anya’s academic learning is extremely limited. She can read but only at approximately a second or third grade level. She can do basic mathematics but even something as relatively easy as long division is hard for her. Her knowledge of science is limited to human anatomy and physiology and even then it’s only what is necessary to make her an especially effective weapon (what and where to target to either kill or incapacitate). She has no knowledge of geography, social studies, literature, history, or any other subject normal children learn to make them informed citizens and free thinkers. Anya was, after all, never meant to be either.

Anya has a lot of scars, more as she gets older, but the worst ones are on her back. Most of the ones on the rest of her body are thin and flat, the result of injuries taken while she was training, but the ones on her back were deliberately made to hurt and to be remembered. The lacerations here were thicker, longer, and deeper and thus, the scars match, healing over slightly raised. Some of them can even be felt through thin clothing.

When given a space where she actually feels safe and can just be a kid, Anya’s actually quite silly, even as a teen, and if your muse is lucky enough to hear her laugh - really laugh - they’re definitely doing something right.

Following Anya's near escape at five years old, Aris Calwyn came to the grim conclusion that her mother had instilled far too much humanity in his weapon while caring for her those first few years. She showed too much empathy, the beginnings of a moral compass that contradicted his goals, and a desire for connection that had her thinking of the other children as potential friends instead of means to an end the way they were meant to be. A desire to leave the facility because of these traits was especially dangerous considering that if he did his job well enough, the only thing that would make her compliance a 100% surety was a desire to be compliant.

So, he begins to create something inhuman out of her - a dog whose only desire and sense of worth is related to following orders, a sheep who blindly follows the shepherd, a monster who cares for nothing and possesses no desire other than to kill on command. To do this, he begins to convince her that she is something other to the people outside, that there is something inherently wrong with her that makes her less human but more powerful all the same, that isolating her is a way of maintaining her safety and that of others until she is ready for the missions that would lead her out beyond these walls. He convinces her that she was not made for contact and connection because she will destroy anyone or anything she loves, just like the mother she murdered and the items that turned to ash in her hands.

Anya internalizes this, as any child would, over the next ( 9 or 16 ) years but it isn't enough to kill the craving and as her "short-comings" were tolerated less and less and "punishments" became more frequent and painful, as the desire to please her father enough to earn something like love became a more impossible feat than ever before, the want to flee only grows. When the opportunity presents itself, she takes it.

This is a massive part of why Anya finds it hard to connect to others, or rather feel secure in the connections she actually makes more readily than most might think. She actually believes there's something wrong with her, that she is inherently dangerous and destined to destroy anything she loves, so the more she loves someone, the more terrified she becomes of losing them whether she does so because she harms them in some way or because they find out what she is and abandon her before it can happen.

The way she reacts to these fears depends a lot on age, verse, and the influence of the people she's connecting with but generally speaking, fourteen-year-old Anya is usually more prone to panic attacks but less likely to leave. Sometimes, certain things trigger them - mistakes or perceived rejections - but sometimes, it's nothing more than a passing thought that spirals out of control. She clings to the connection like a lifeline while simultaneously hating herself for being "too selfish" to let go. She tends to use a fawning or people-pleasing approach to basically "convince" people that they love her and tries her best to "pretend" to be more girl than monster, hoping if they don't see the truth and she manages to control the bad thing inside her that she can keep her loved ones longer, maybe even forever.

Twenty-one-year-old Anya has grown into more of a stance involving feigned apathy. She tells herself she doesn't need anyone, that she's actually better off alone, and tends to avoid loss by avoiding connection in the first place. She's a lot harder to form any sort of bond with and way more likely to leave someone if she feels rejection may be approaching. She still struggles with a lot of anxiety but is more adept at suppressing her emotions, unfortunately also making herself more prone to letting things build up until she explodes.

Five-year-old Anya still craves love and fear rejection, still fawns as a response to her trauma, and is still prone to lots of anxiety but she has far less of these beliefs instilled in her and is the easiest to connect with and the easiest to help heal from the abuse she endured.

Anya is pretty strong for her age and stature, but she doesn’t look it. Not at first glance. Not only is she just short but she’s also leaning more on the scrawny/lanky side, especially at 14. This isn’t because she’s underfed (at least not compared to normal kids her age) or over worked, but because in order to maintain her powers, her metabolism is always on overtime. In verses where she doesn’t have powers, she just has a fast metabolism.

This also means that she eats frequently and a lot to maintain even a baseline level of energy and Anya tends to be pretty energetic when left to her own devices. Keeping her body busy keeps her mind quiet, after all.

This is especially difficult for her in verses where she’s on the streets because she has to steal food more often to keep up with her necessary energy reserves, not just to function but to also defend herself. If your muse meets her on the streets, they’ll probably meet her hungry and food might be temptation enough to make her (reluctantly) trust them.
