Ohhhhh one comment, not based on the movie per se (like spoiler wise) (but also kinda so just beware). Just a line from it. When D*naldson said he doesn't want to be playing t*nnis when he's 40 and scoffs at the idea of it?? Um not it giving such an f you to the players that still want to. My Skeleton Crew finale SPOILER thoughts!

...I am so fascinated by Jod. I was kinda right that he doesn't get a full blown redemption, but I was also proven wrong about my reaction to him from last week: he's not a completely evil bastard.

I will say, that I still think he's not a good person, but I won't call him 'evil.' He doubled down on his choices and his philosophy right up to the end, and he still kept using gaslighting language on the kids: blaming them for things getting this bad, claiming if they just obeyed him then things would be fine, etc. That's all abusive language.

But yes, now that we know his backstory, his actions all make sense as a trauma response. He was deeply messed up by watching that Jedi die in front of him, and it made him cynical.

It's very interesting though, that in his rant he still acknowledged that there is good in the universe, and it makes me think he sees himself as a monster. If he is at least aware of what is good and bad, and he still chooses to be bad... that makes him someone who, by default, probably hates himself and doesn't think he deserves to join the side of good.

It's psychologically so fascinating, and I see parallels with Darth Vader and Kylo Ren too. They too on some level knew that they were doing evil things, but had no hope for themselves. So much to unpack. I love characters like this!

So, while I think he still counts as a 'bad guy' in this, the way it ends does leave open the door for, someday, after a lot of work, he could redeem himself. But right now, he's still too much of a scoundrel. Also important to note how self destructive he is: his choices are very impulsive and poorly thought out, and he honestly could have just stayed with the kids until the very end and been able to get away with a giant reward, and be a lot better off.

But he chose to betray them for no good reason other than his own pride, and not wanting to be indebted to these kids that he finds annoying. He caused his own downfall by giving them a villain to overcome their own differences to defeat.

God this is such good writing!

It is interesting that they don't let us see what happened to him, they left that very open-ended. I know his final expression is being hotly debated, and I personally saw it as him accepting his defeat with dignity, but also.... there might be a tiny bit of him that's proud of the kids for defeating him and proving him wrong, that there are good guys who sometimes win. But it's very up for interpretation.

I also love how Wim's dad got to be a hero too! He's such a giant nerd lol. 'Son, you're looking at a Level 7 Analyst,' or whatever, and he says it like its the most badass thing in the world.

In general, this finale lets the adults learn to trust their children and defy the strict rules of that society, which is a good message.

And I LOVE that bit where Fern tells her mom about how, no matter where they went, even in the really bad places, they still met people that were kind and helped them. It's mirroring what Jod was saying, about pinpricks of light. The difference is that Jod lost faith in those pinpricks, while Fern found it (faith).

Yeah, I would have preferred we got a brief epilogue, to just show how the planet adjusts to now being part of the galaxy again, but it's honestly a minor nitpick. And part of me is ok with it not answering every single question, it allows our imagination to blossom. And also gives the writers wiggle room for Season 2...

Oh! Also: I love that, even after everything, Wim wanted Jod to come with them. He didn't want to abandon him. That feels so much like Luke. And I love that Jod just gives him this small smile, like he's saying, 'nah, kid, you earned this, get going.'

I loved this show so so so so much, it's just classic Star Wars fun, but it still felt fresh and different. Bravo!

Taking another piece of land from the Lannister army wasn’t easy. Espeacially when Robb found himself on his back with a sword coming down towards his chest, ready to impale him.

When suddenly out of the blue a sword stuck out of the soldiers chest. As he fell Robb stood up and noticed his savior was a woman on horseback. He gave her a nodd of appreciation and she returned it. After the exchange the two continued to keep fighting.

Once the battle was over and the North had taken more territory Robb looked around searching for the woman that had saved his life.

Upon spotting her he noticed that she was actually heading his way on her horse. Once she was infront of him Robb nodded in thanks from earlier. “Thanks. I owe you my life.”

The woman smiled down at him. “Just win the War young wolve.”

“Who are you?” He asked stunned by the woman infront of him. She saved his life and she was stunning in her beauty. Why was this gorgeous woman on the battle field.

“Y/n. Y/n Targaryen.” Y/n spoke as she got off her horse. That’s when Robb noticed the small baby dragon on her shoulder.

“Targaryen?” Robb questioned shocked at hearing the name that was thought to have been extincted till as of late. The hair and dragon were shocking factors as well.

“Yes.” She nodded in confirmation, as she got off her horse gracefully. She was sure her name in Westeros was mind blowing.

“Explains the hair.” He joked with a friendly smile.

“And your a Stark. Explains the Direwolf.” Y/n teased back smiling at his nice break of the ice and lighten the mood. The way she smiled towards Greywind told Robb she truly wasn’t afraid of the Direwolf. But then again she had a dragon, why would she be afraid.

“I’ve heard of your sister. And you.” Robb said as the both of them walked throng the once battle field.

“Most have.” She commented looking around at all the remains. Most seemed to be lannister army whihc was good for the North she thought.

“Why’d you save me?” Robb asked her stopping the both of them from walking. He knew she wasn’t there when the fight had started. She must of shown up in the middle of it and decided to help out. It seemed to him that she had brought some men of her own with her. So was her intent to come and help? Why was she here? Last he heard her and her sister were across the sea.

“I’d like to help you win. Become King of the North.” Y/n told him flat out her reasons. Y/n had heard of what was going on in Westeros where her and her sister were. She wanted to help.

“In exchange for?” Robb knew that couldn’t be it. There had to be a motive, something her and her sister would get in exchange.

“Smart of you to assume there’s a catch young King.” She smiled proudly at his quick mind. “My sister wants to take her rightful spot on the Iron Throne. I hear you don’t want it. So. My propersituation is you stay King of the North, but under my sister Daenerys.”

Robb listened ti her propersituation and it wasn’t a bad one he’d admit. But what else besides the North would he get out of this?

“An what do I get out of this besides the North?” he questioned curious to know it there’s more.

“We help you wim. We have the numbers.” y/n told him clasping her hand together infront of her. She could tell he was skeptical and she would be to.

“How do I know you and your sister won’t turn on me and mine?” Robb narrowed his eye’s watching her carefully to see if her body language would give anything away. But she seemed completely open and honest.

“We don’t break our promises to people but if you wish to have a more solid agreement. What do you propose?” She offered this opening to bring trust between them. If he came up with a reasonable thing to add for this to work then Y/n could hopefully make it work.

Even thought it was Robbs idea to add something for a better, stronger Alliance, but he didn’t have anything off the top of his head. “How about you stay with us for awhile and we can discuss it?”

Y/n smiled giving him a nod of thanks and respect. He’d rather think of a good agreement then something on the spot. “I’d be honored.”

Robb nodded back with a matching smile. “The honors all mine.”

This way they could come up with something together that they both agree upon and he could get to know her.

I have things to say about the finale.

Now that I've seen it, now that the emotions are settled down.

Spoilers for 1x08, so under the cut in case somebody's not seen it yet.

So I'm actually pretty happy with the finale. Really happy because it ended with the victorious people being who it always should have been, the kids. Fern, KB, Wim, Neel, working together and their parents too in their way, to save the day.

I absolutely loved the hug at the end, when they all went to find KB and just that exchange of "Did we win?" "Yes!"

We did NOT get a huge expansive backstory for Jod, but neither were we promised that. All Jude hinted at was a bit about his childhood and how or why he's Force-sensitive. Well, Mr. Law, that last part wasn't quite...we just know that Jod is actually able to use the Force, but the how or why hmm. Unless by that he meant that his Jedi master had taught him how to use it, I suppose.

Anyway.

I actually loved the information they chose to give us. The picture of a (presumedly) orphaned Jod (I wonder what happened to his parents...did they abandon him, were they killed?) living in a metaphorical (or maybe he was literal here) hole depending on the next meal and living a damn rough life. Then a Jedi finds him, teaches him a little about the Force, and she MUST have said that thing to him that he says to Wim, the Qui-Gon idea. (Of course that's a Jedi principle, not solely Qui-Gon's words, but where would Jod have picked that up if not from her?) And this is the tragic part, she took him under her wing and taught him their ways, but then he was forced to watch when they killed her.

That scarred him and definitely damaged him in a real deep way. I am not excusing his behavior departing from 1x05 and his descent there. That's not okay and I'm still mad at him for all that, but the past they've given him tracks with that, I suppose, and it makes sense that Jod would develop such a dark outlook on life from his experiences. Seeing the galaxy as a dark rotten place with only a few pinpricks of light etc...

And, here, look it comes. I, who have argued for Jod's redemption until blue in the face, am content with the way they ended it because I admit, if they had made him do another heel turn or come to some sort of decision as I thought he might have, I don't think it would have been done so well. It wouldn't have been convincing or felt very real to me. That sort of thing needs time. But what I absolutely adore almost above everything else is--and I don't know if it was purely just the writing or Jude's own decisions with acting, his expressions, etc--the nuances of his actions in that last episode.

I saw a post somewhere saying that Jod had "messed up" by not killing the kids because if it were Anakin, he'd have had At Attin under his boot in ten seconds or something like that. That just caught my eye, and it's worthy to note that Jod didn't harm them. He could have, but he didn't. Yeah, he was trying to pass himself off as the emissary and all that stuff, whatever. But when it was just Fern and her mom with him? He could have killed them.

This interview sheds a whole lot of light on stuff like this, and I'll have you know, the showrunners--the creators of this blessedly amazing series--the creators, people, were saying "those small gestures, his tiny bit of hesitation when he fires", referring to the moment he shot at Fern. The interview perceived that he had intentionally missed Fern, and that's when the creators comment on it. Seriously, he's him. He could have hit her squarely, but I really don't think he intended to. If anything, I believe he did mean to miss or shoot just shy of her.

Also, again, the creators saying he's in "a morally gray" area, "tortured by his behaviour". Whether that means conflicted because he has 'greed treasure I will be rich forever and happy' on one hand and 'i care even a little bit about these kids and don't actually want to hurt them' on the other and those are two forces warring in his soul, I don't know. But there is conflict there, and in any villain I've known in TV shows, movies, books...if there is conflict of evil and good in them, they aren't 100%, completely and irredeemably gone.

Just all of this complexity put into Jod and pulled off by Jude Law was completely and utterly amazing, and that is something I really enjoyed about the finale.

I'm saying it's not the end of road for Jod, and that's what's fantastic about fanfiction.

Watching Skeleton Crew really does hammer home the "Starwars would be so good if it was good" factor, doesn't it?

I mean, it's a winning idea: Take the best parts of Goonies style kid-venture flics, go over the top with kickass space pirate aestehtics, sprinkle in a dash of mystery for the lorefiends.

Despite all that though, Skelecrew fucks it all up by refusing at any point to be a story with themes, resolving into paint by numbers content™ that goes through the motions without engaging a single emotion.

But that's the problem with every bit of starwars media since TFA left us on the island isn't it? All the pieces are there, and if they had just landed SLIGHTLY different they'd be absolutely perfect instead of the forgettable 6.5/10 fun-despite-it's-flaws disappointments we keep finding ourselves with.

Fundamentally though, I think the problems with Skelecrew comes down to 3 factors:

The kids are consigned to being "the kids" rather than allowed to be characters. Good children's media understands that however inexperienced and simplified it might be, young people have interiority and deal with emotions just as complex as adults do. Instead what we get are paper cutouts: Wim wants to be a Jedi and goes on an adventure (which is somehow presented as neive and annoying despite this being STARWARS), Neel is timid, Fern strains against authority, and KB is...there? They're never allowed to progress past these simple descriptors because other than generic " Oh gosh will we ever make it home?" angst , they're never given any storybeats to react to. Their constant desire to go home likewise completely undercuts the kid adventure story this is supposed to be. Adventures are supposed to be FUN and SCARY, that's why every kids movie features a death defying slide sequence.

Jod's villain plan/heel turn makes no god damn sense. Think about it: The kids want to get home, Jod wants to get to their home and be rich. Helping the kids to get home and then slipping away to fill his pockets with old republic credits would be an absolute win/win. The show is so obsessed with having a DRAMATIC BETRAYAL that it tells you there's going to be a DRAMATIC BETRAYAL multiple times an episode, at the expense of having any time to set up any bond between these characters that would make there be drama or betrayal in the first place.

Time: These eight episode seasons are really killing us, aren't they? Too bloated to being a riproaring movie, too short to give us miniseries style character development. We're moving from A to B at a relentless pace that still somehow has filler episodes.

But as his voice dimmed through the stadium, making way for Till to take over and tilt the tables,

The stage stilled with silence.

Ivan quickly turned to Till to see what was wrong-why wasn’t he trying!?

Yet he saw it-Till’s dull eyes moving to the floor as he slowly let go of the microphone. Till looked so tired-so done, so hopeless. The eyebags under his eyes had only gotten worse, now staining his perfect face. It was horrifying. All the fight drained from him along with Mizi’s disappearance.

Their song was almost done-and Ivan was winning.

Till would die.

No. That was unacceptable. Ivan ran towards the desolate boy, hoping that violence would impact his own score enough to let Till win.

Till could live without him. He’d never would live without Till. 96% 97% 98% 99%

Ivan was too late. As the words IVAN WIN flashed on the screen behind him, he felt his blood run cold.

Ivan didn’t stop running, tackling Till into a hug. He wished he could use his own body as a shield. He wished he could protect the boy in his arms from everything-the aliens, the sound of the gun being loaded behind them, himself,

He felt Till bury his head into Ivan’s shoulder, the other’s tears soaking his shirt. “Till…!” He whispered. Or maybe he cried. Ivan’s own tears mixing in with Till’s was deafening.

Oh, if only this was how eternity would span. Embracing Till in his arms, his own body a shield or a cloth for Till’s wims.

“Out of the way.” He heard before a hand attempted to rip him away from the love of his life.

He didn’t let go. He’d never. Both of then tumbled aside, Ivan stubbornly, desperately clinging on to the limp form in his arms. “Why…?” The almost lifeless whisper coming from the mouth of the most lively person Ivan knew felt wrong. If the great Anakt was ever so merciful all Ivan wished was for Till to live as he did. Careless, roudy, beautiful.

”What do you mean w-“ Ivan attempted to reply, but was cut off by a sharp pain in his back. The alien was back, now with a taser to Ivan’s neck and a gun to Till’s. Ivan couldn’t move his body anymore. Jolts of electric pain shot through him. He couldn’t even scream. Maybe it was supposed to hurt even more. Ivan would even welcome that a thousand times rather than the sight of Till’s blood splattering his face.

How cruel the world was.

He couldn’t even move his mouth to mourn.

Tears welled in his eyes as Ivan struggled to move his hand to Till’s bleeding neck. He couldn’t save him.

A weak yet bright smile graces Till’s dying face. It was almost assuring. As if Till was whispering he would be content wherever Mizi was.

…

Of course. As it always was. He was where Mizi was.

Ivan couldn’t help the bitter, pained smile that cracked across his face.

“My god, my universe.”

Standing Next to You MV Teaser

Wow, well this teaser is so cinematic it has me imagining a whole storyline based on the Wim Wenders' film Wings of Desire.

In the film angels watch over the residents of Berlin, invisible to humans but listening to their worries and providing solace. One of the angels decides to give up his immortality in order to experience life as a human. He meets and falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist and is amazed by the life he gets to leads thanks to that encounter.

At the start of the MV JK is dressed in a somber suit, placed by a many paned window that suggests an early 20th century skyscraper. He is a lonely angel looking down across the bustling but cold city.

So who is the girl in the video? Did you notice how she didn't change her expression once in this clip, almost like she didn't see him? A lonely soul, a beautiful ballet dancer trying to make it in the big city.

So perhaps the invisible angel decides to shed his wings, become mortal and try and win a human love? The dark colours give way to reds, oranges and yellow to passion.

He finds her alone in a tunnel walking towards the golden light. He appears and follows her. He is exposed, in human flesh and he wants to spend his mortal life, 'Standing next to you'. No longer an angel he can be seen, held and loved.

Of course a story like that has very little to do with the funky disco sound we heard in the preview or the choreography JK and his crew are doing in the rest of the video.

Still, I think I'll stick with my version until we see what he really has in store for us on Friday.

It's Oscars night and I realized that I'm... actually weirdly invested this year, as I've seen most of the nominated films and (for the most part) really enjoyed them.

So... here's my winner wishlist!! (for the categories I care about)

Best Picture - Anatomy of a Fall. Literally this movie blew me away so much in ways I could have never predicted. It was so fucking good. French people I'll give this one to you. Honestly I'll be happy with pretty much every winner, except if it's Barbie or Oppenheimer. I liked those two movies, but they're just not my top picks out of this spread. If Poor Things wins I'll be mad as hell but like, I get it. I'm just a hater.

Best Lead Actor - Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers. I suspect Cillian Murphy will win this one for Oppenheimer, and I wouldn't be too mad about it.

Best Supporting Actor - Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things. The great acting was probably my favourite thing about that movie, and he in particular is a stand-out.

Best Lead Actress - Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall. Her slay this season was CRAZY like she did not come to play, with being triple nominated (for this, and then two of her movies being in the run for best picture). I have sadly not seen Killers of the Flower Moon yet but I'd also be very happy if Lily Gladstone won this one!!!

Best Supporting Actress - Da'Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers. She was just such a delight in that movie.

Directing - Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest. I can hardly describe the many amazing and powerful directing choices that were made for this movie. I highly recommend watching it, but please read a synopsis for the film first and beware. It is not an easy watch.

Animated Feature Film - The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki. Obvious pick for me. I'd be happy if it's Spiderverse too. And - although I find it extremely unlikely - I'd cry tears of joy if Nimona actually won. I was at that movie's world premiere and it made me experience so many emotions. So I'd be overjoyed if they won, too.

Animated Short Film - Our Uniform by Yegane Moghaddam. Such a powerful film. Very much recommend watching if you happen to have an animation film festival near you.

International Feature Film - Perfect Days directed by Wim Wenders. It's actually a crime that this movie is not nominated for Best Picture because it would have been my top pick there too. This movie is an absolute DELIGHT and I recommend everyone watch it. It's simply wonderful.
