ganavya - Daughter of a Temple - another of this year's bounty of excellent spiritual jazz albums, with a stellar cast of guests performing a slate of Coltrane covers (John *and* Alice) and originals
Described by the Wall Street Journal as “one of modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” New York-born and Tamil Nadu-raised singer and multi-instrumentalist ganavya shares an ambitious new album, "Daughter of a Temple", via LEITER. The album follows her performance at SAULT’s acclaimed live debut in London in 2023, where, according to The Guardian, her “voice had a delicate emotive heft that could turn stoics into sobbing wrecks.” Her first single for LEITER, "draw something beautiful," was released earlier this year in July. For "Daughter of a Temple", ganavya invited over 30 artists from various disciplines to a ritual gathering in Houston. The results—an innovative and deeply moving blend of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music—were initially recorded by Ryan Renteria and then further edited and mixed by Nils Frahm at LEITER's studio in Berlin in 2024. Daughter of a Temple includes the voices, sounds, efforts, and prayers of: ganavya (voice, double bass, kalimba), esperanza spalding (double bass, voice), Vijay Iyer (piano), Immanuel Wilkins (saxophone, voice), Shabaka Hutchings (wind instruments, voice), Wayne Shorter (voice, beads, bell), Carolina Shorter (voice, beads), Ganesan Doraiswamy (voice), Vidya Doraiswamy (voice), Charles Overton (harp, voice), Peter Sellars (voice), IONE (voice), Rajna Swaminathan (voice, mrudangam, kanjira), Kweku Sumbry (percussion, drums, voice), M.S. Krsna (guitar, voice), Bindhumalini Narayanswamy (voice), Rasika Shekar (flute, voice), Shanta Nurullah (sitar, voice), Viktor Laurent Ewing Givens (voice, dance, ritualist), Chris Sholar (electronics), Darian Donovan Thomas (violin, electronics), Jiordi Rosales (cello, voice), Eden Girma (voice), and brontë velez (voice, dance, prophesy). The gathering-at-large in Houston included the presences, dances, efforts, and prayers of: Alyssa Simmons (event production, voice), Andrew Wilson (textile - making of prayer clothes, voice), Amir George (cinematography), Anya Yermakova (piano, choreography, dance), Cean Geronimo (food, voice), Charlotte Brathwaite (stage direction, voice), Frewuhn (voice), Joy Harjo (voice), Larry Blumenfeld (voice, movement), Lucía Martinez (movement, voice), Michael Ewing (event production, voice), Ricky Weaver (photography, voice), Ryan Renteria (sound engineer), Shelly Travis (event production, voice), Shireen Hamza (movement, voice), Terence Price II (cinematography), and Zahra Baker (voice). All music produced by Ganavya Doraiswamy. Additional production by esperanza spalding, Rajna Swaminathan, Ryan Renteria, Nils Frahm and Felix Grimm. Mixed by Ryan Renteria, additional mixing by esperanza spalding and Nils Frahm. Recorded by Ryan Renteria at Moore’s Opera House, Houston, Texas. Mastered by Zino Mikorey, vinyl cut by Andreas Kauffelt at Schnittstelle. Tracks 1, 2, 6, 8, 9: Licensed courtesy of Jowcol Music / Universal Music Publishing. Tracks 2, 6 by Swamini Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. Tracks 1, 8, 9 by John Coltrane. Cover image by Ricky Weaver, design by Studio Torsten Posselt.

Songwriting
Today's website blog is about how I combined vocal technique and sound engineering technique in 'River'll Carry Me (Edit)' 2024.
I have never been happy with my recording of ‘River Will Carry Me’ (2022). So, yesterday, I edited the vocals and sound engineering and… Voilà! River’ll Carry Me (Edit) on YouTube The problem for me with the 2022 version was that the vocals weren’t expressing what I needed this song to say: ‘the River’ (life) will eventually bring the character in the song (the singer) to find a man that treats…

166: Roberta Flack // First Take

First Take Roberta Flack 1969, Atlantic
I was never fair to Roberta Flack. Up until a few years ago, I dismissed her as a Black Carly Simon, emblem of that blandly textured early ‘70s AM radio singer-songwriter style that has always made me cringe. (Is there some latent sexism in that posture I should be re-examining? Yes, probably, but one thing at a time.) This turns out to have been a clownshoes take, as anyone who has listened to Roberta Flack’s majestic First Take could’ve told me. Flack, it turns out, is a devastating singer and pianist who effortlessly draws together the worlds of hard bop, soul, singer-songwriter folk, and musical theatre. She is certainly a softer touch than Nina Simone or Aretha Franklin, but the power of her voice commands a similar respect from the players around her, who give her all the space she needs to float into the lyrics, which she has a way of singing as though the words have just come to her in a dream. She leads a masterly quartet, with Ron Carter (of Miles Davis’s second Quintet and 2,220 other recordings) in particular really digging in on bass—to the extent this can be considered a soul record, it’s in the dialogue between Flack’s vocal and his deep grooves. All in all, First Take is one of the finest albums of 1969, and I’m an ass for having doubted Flack’s quality—but a world that permits anything as lovely as her “Angelitos Negros” to reside in it is making at least a tacit promise of a great forgiveness to come.

Celebrating female jazz vocalists. Some of them are famous, some obscure, but all these albums are carefuly selected gems. I prefer small combo setting to orchestral arrangements but if classy and tasty, it’s also fine. Now excuse me while I’m spending the evening with the ladies 🤗

I'm aware that I've given the impression that I only listen to western classical music with a focus on grand opera. Actually, I also listen to select jazz, rock, afro-cuban and other ethnic music. Last night, I treated myself to an evening listening to Cleo Laine who I consider to be the greatest all round female singer of my time. I was also very fortunate to attend five live performances which I remember with great pleasure. And, she's still with us at age 97.

inho is the type of guy who would be WAY overprotective. whenever he could, he'd always want to be in the same room with you if not right next to you. he'd get anxious if you were out of his sight, especially because of how dangerous his job can be.
inho is the type of guy that would manipulate you to not leave him. if the two of you had an argument, big or small, he'd talk you back into his arms.

inho is the type of guy to give you both a mix of praise and degradation.
inho is the type of guy to love you cock warming him. every year during the first game, he'd have you cock warm him as he leans back on the couch, watching the players start to get shot down like flies.
inho is the type of guy who'd always be dom in bed. he'd love to look down at you beneath him as you writhe in the pleasure he's giving you.
inho is the type of guy to get turned on when you start to get vocal. he'd get even more horny knowing that he's also making you feel good.
inho is the type of guy to fuck you with his mask on. he'd find it really attractive when he looks down at you through the restrictive view of his mask.
